I hope you all enjoyed the Easter break and the lovely sunshine we were blessed with in April!

May brings us the promise of warmer weather as we glide towards summer but it’s a busy month for our young people with assessments throughout each school year and the start of GCSE’s for year 11. The very best of luck to all of you who are currently studying for your GCSE’s, I hope you get plenty of exercise outdoors to help you relax and take a break.

The Ackworth 1st Scouting Group offers a range of outdoor activities which can help young people to deal with the pressures they face daily. We have some information in this month’s Arrow if you would like to find out more.

COMMUNITY NEWS Art In Ackworth Every Tuesday and Wednesday mornings one of the Parish Rooms on Bell Lane becomes an Art Studio. Gail Simms, art teacher and herself a very talented artist in her own right, runs two classes for local residents entitled “Painting for Pleasure”. Gail, who studied at Bath Academy of Art before going on to teach Art in various Secondary Schools in the area, then moved on to work in Further Education. Unfortunately, just now these very popular classes are full as, limited by space, Gail can only accept 16 students each session but she does have a waiting list, if people are interested.

The classes cost just £4 per session but students are asked to commit to at least 5 sessions, paying in advance.

There are no exams and the classes are not accredited, they are as, described, entirely for pleasure. However, the classes are quite structured with students studying drawing, water colour, acrylics and pastels with work on collage also included. Ideas for the work may come from photographs, still life or can be abstract. In Summer the group may go out and about in Ackworth, looking for inspiration. The students come from a wide area, include people from Ackworth but also, for example, from Wakefield and Featherstone.

Gail has a very loyal group of students indeed someone has attended her classes for over 30 years. Her students describe Gail as a very inventive, innovative and inspirational teacher and they all obviously enjoy attending the “Painting for Pleasure” classes. During the morning there is a break for coffee and biscuits, sometimes cake, time for students to socialise and inspect, discuss, appraise and admire each other’s work.

Most of the students simply enjoy and take pleasure from their work as the title of the classes suggests, then take pride in hanging the finished product on walls in their own homes, or giving some, as presents, to friends and relatives. However, some of the work produced has been sold by these very committed, talented art students and indeed some work from the classes was exhibited at the Parish Rooms in Ackworth on their recent Open Day.

1st Ackworth Scout Group Weekend of Fun for the Cubs

A fun filled action packed weekend was recently enjoyed by the Cubs of the 1st Ackworth group when they visited Bradley Woods Scout Activity Centre near Huddersfield. The weekend was blessed with glorious weather which enabled them to really put the OUT in Scouting.

Scouting in all sections is full of adventurous and challenging outdoor activities.

Baden Powell the founder of the Scout movement believed in fresh air, fun and challenges spent in the great outdoors, and the Cubs certainly got plenty of that over the weekend. The weekend saw a mix of traditional Scouting activities alongside more up to date ones.

The first evening saw them in dark woods playing a wide game trying to find elusive glowing lights - spooky when you might only be just 8years old and away from home for the first time.

Saturday was a day of many challenges from dawn till dusk (or should I say 5.30a.m until midnight - although that wasn't necessarily how the leaders had planned it!!) The Cubs were much more eager than their leaders to make an early start! The first activity of the day after a hearty cooked breakfast, was spent making fires outdoors and cooking a good old Scout favourite 'dampers and twists' on them. Have you ever tried to light a fire with twigs using only a flint? Ackworth Cubs have just like Bear Grylls our Chief Scout does on T.V. and they were successful at it as well. Fires and cooking over and it was off for a spell of climbing. Ackworth Cubs are always up for the challenge and no one chickened out of the 30 metre climb.

Time for a spot of lunch, and a sit down for the leaders whilst youthful voices could once again be heard echoing through the woods. Still full of energy and it was time for a hike in the local area - making sure the Cubs knew how to use a map and compass properly, a skill many adults aren't able to use nowadays. A slightly less demanding task followed when the Cubs made 'key ring characters' to take home as souvenirs of the weekend.

Energy replenished once more and it was off on the next challenge, that of the 'ropes course'. They had to negotiate a course balancing on ropes, tyres and beams without touching the ground, most managed it but not all.

Refuelling was now the order of the day, and after a good dinner, more wide games followed. The day ended with a traditional Scout campfire and singing, still a Scouting favourite that has stood the test of time.

Next day Sunday and a new set of challenges after the traditional Scouts Own, the Scouting name for a reflective service. Shooting was a new activity for many of the Cubs, though some found the guns a bit heavy and difficult to load, and a lot of targets remained in pristine condition! But all agreed it was one of their favourite activities, one which their age group probably had no chance of doing unless they joined the Cubs.

If you have ever seen the Cresta Run at the Winter Olympics then you can imagine the fun the Cubs had on the site's Cresta Run which runs not on snow but down a long sloping course on a set of rails, some of the Cubs described it as like a mini roller coaster. They all voted it great fun, but a bit scary.

Soon it was time to pack up and head for home, many tired and weary Cubs but looking forwards to the next big adventure.

COMMUNITY NEWS Ackworth 74 Club April Meeting.

At the Aptil Meeting of the 74 Club the speaker was Janet Smart, a very ordinary lady who demonstrated that by her actions, has been able to make an extraordinary difference to the lives of children in an Orphanage in Lesotho.

Following the death of her husband and a holiday in South Africa in 2004, Janet became aware of the plight of many mentally and physically disabled children in an orphanage in Lesotho, one of the world’s poorest countries.

So for the past thirteen years, after visiting the orphanage in Thuso, Janet has devoted a great deal of time and effort to raising money for the orphanage and in order to ensure the money was spent on the children, their needs and improving their lives, Janet went out regularly to Lesotho with the money to oversee how it was used.

Janet has so far raised well over £20,000 for this very worthy cause.

Her work brought her to the attention of Prince Harry, Patron of the Orphanage and indeed Janet has attended a Conference at Windsor Castle and met Prince Harry, who, with help from some of his fellow officers, built a dormitory for the children which Janet, by her fund raising, was then able to furnish with bunk beds and mattresses.

Members of the 74 Club gave all the proceeds from their fund raising this month, a cheque for £120, to Janet to support her work in the future.

St Cuthbert’s & All Saints Mind the Gap! If you have travelled on the London Underground, you will have heard those words many times. Before you get on a train, whilst you are one the train, and when you get off the train. Part of the inevitable safety notices which we have to endure. But it is an essential warning, and we can probably take something of this warning into our daily lives, even when we are not on the Tube!

Artists may sometimes tell you, that when drawing or painting an object, it is the space around the object which you are drawing.

They may tell you to concentrate on the spaces between things, rather than the things themselves. This is quite a revelation, and sometimes quite difficult to do. Few of us looking at a beautiful object, would look around it, we are likely to be looking straight at it!

But in our lives, it can be so often true, that we spend so much time looking at things, that we neglect the space around them. Whilst sitting in St Cuthbert’s church one evening, a few weeks ago, I was looking at the arch which marks the entrance to the chancel area of church. Looking at the stone which forms the arch, and the stone columns which form the support for the arch, and also the lights which illuminate those features. But as I stared, I noticed something else. The space under the arch. The shape created by the arch. But most importantly, the space beyond the arch. I was suddenly aware that I could not see beyond the arch, because the lights were too bright. The space was darkness. However, if I shielded my eyes from the lights before me, I could see the features of the chancel, in the space under the arch. What I realized, is that the things, the objects, and the lights which were so close to me, were masking the things in the distance. How true is this in our lives?

That we spend so much time looking at the things under our noses, that we fail to see the things on the horizon, that we fail to see where we are going.

Perhaps we need to mind the gap more often. It might be the most important gap in our lives!
