Welcome to the June issue of the Ackworth Arrow.

This month’s Arrow has details of Summer Fayres and shows that will keep you well topped up with strawberries, cream and cake!

To make sure you can enjoy all the treats in store, may I introduce you to my latest obsession (nothing to do with food for a change), the very marvellous Fitbit! I have the very basic Flex model which monitors your daily steps, your calorie intake and output and quality of your sleep. What else do you need in your life—oh and a little bit of competition with your equally insane fitbit friends (a very special group). A fabulous and fun way to keep fit.

COMMUNITY NEWS Yorkshire Country Women’s Association At the May meeting of Ackworth Yorkshire Country Women’s Association members were treated to a most enjoyable evening. The guest speaker and demonstrator was successful local business woman and skilled florist, Debbie Harrod. Debbie, the owner and co-manager of Ackworth Flowers on Wakefield Rd. Ackworth spoke with passion about her love and dedication to flower arranging. Debbie, who admitted to not holding any professional qualification in flower arranging, clearly demonstrated her skill and expertise in the art.

Debbie encouraged her audience to be courageous in their own efforts and showed how easy it can be to achieve a really different and inspired arrangement.

Debbie, who now owns a second florist’s shop in South Elmsall, one that for 76 years was previously known as Farmery’s, favours the more original, less regimented approach to flower arranging. At the end of her demonstration Debbie kindly donated her arrangements to the Association to raffle for their

funds and then everyone enjoyed a delicious buffet, all donated by members. At the June Meeting members will hear a talk by representatives of Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Ackworth Ladies 74 Club

At the May Meeting of the 74 Club the Members enjoyed a presentation of music and poetry by Singer –Song Writer Gifford Rolfe and Poet Roy Kibbler. The evening’s entertainment, entitled ”Half a Laugh and Half a Cry” was based around the themes of love, relationships, and family life a nd had elements of humour, nostalgia and pathos.

Instead Members are asked to meet at The Kings Arms Heath Common on Tuesday June 21st at 7 pm for the Annual Summer Walk.

Ackworth Road Runners April 2016 Omitted from last month was Janet Davis’s fine performance in the Thirsk 10 miles race, on 20th March, where she finished second in the Yorkshire Veterans Championships, L60 category Another busy month 84 members ran in the Wakefield Hospice 10k on 3rd April, a record, with some running the distance for the first time and 32 setting personal best times, first home for the club was Simon Newton in 34’49”, second Mark Mills in a personal best time of 35’55, first lady (in overall 4th place) was Becci Winter with a personal best time of 38’33”. Three days later 78 members travelled, on a cool showery evening, along the M62 to join with our friends from Goole Viking Striders for the Annual Spring Handicap race, fastest again was Simon, fastest lady this time was Emma Evans. Handicap winner was Martin Wincer with Nicola Henshaw first lady. Marin now leads the Handicap Series from Darren Horobin & Joe Worthington in joint second place, Gemma Lind leads the ladies series just one point ahead of Ruth Walker with Donna Bailey third.

We welcome back founder member Ken Tait who has re-joined, following his successful run in the Ackworth Half Marathon, he celebrated his return with good time in the Nostel Park Run on 9th April, and also showing fine form on the same day in the Pontefract Park Run was another Founder Member Paul Zywicki.

AR Club Marathon Medal Winners To make it a monthly treble for original members, local radio & TV commentator Harvey Wiles returned to arrange a quiz for 40 members and friends on 26th April, it was a great success, the wisest heads being the team with the highest combined ages!

On 20th April twenty members ran the Manchester Marathon, some for the first time over the distance, and fourteen in the associated team relay, first home in the marathon was Darren Horobin in 3 hours 16’ (it was later reported that the course had been short by 385 yards for the last five years!)

Continuing our representation abroad Liz Fairhurst & Bradley Bannister ran in the Paris Marathon on 3rd April, Martyn Stearn in the Boston Marathon 17th April & Steve Dennis in in the Madrid Marathon on 24th April.

Twelve members ran in the London Marathon on 24th April, five setting personal best times, first home was Simon Newton in the highly respectable time of 2 hours 46’24” second was club men’s captain Tim Ashby in 3 hours 13’37”, first lady was Donna Bailey 3 hours 39’50” closely followed by Liane Warren 3 hour 42’ 08” two other ladies were sub four hours.

38 members have run marathons already this year; six have run two & one three, out intrepid centurion Roy Young has run five!

Choirs and Cakes for Christian Aid! On Sunday April 24th Ackworth Church Choirs came together for a very special fund raising event for the Charity “Christian Aid”. The venue was All Saints’ Church but the Choirs and Music Groups came from The Methodist Church, Ackworth Community Church and St Cuthbert’s. Each Choir provided a selection of Christian music in their own particular style, which ensured there was something for everyone.

The audience were given the opportunity to join in the singing and this they did, with great enthusiasm and enjoyment. The afternoon concluded with everyone partaking in tea and cakes. There was a wonderful selection of cakes on offer, many homemade and all having been donated by respective church members. There was then an opportunity for everyone present to chat, socialise and of course donate to Christian Aid. The afternoon was a great success with All Saints Church filled to capacity and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. So much so, that many were agreed it should become a regular event.

St Cuthbert’s & All Saints Marmite!

There are many things in the world that divide people into two camps. Marmite is one of them.

You either love it, or you hate it! Indeed, marmite has become a symbol of things which either you love, or you hate, with no middle ground.

This year we will see many celebrations, including the Queens 90th birthday. But one which may divide us to some extent, is the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death. The plays of Shakespeare have the marmite factor. Are you a fan, or not? Many of us, if not all of us will have come across Shakespeare during high school days, and likely for ‘O’ Levels, or GCSE exams (depending on your age). I would suggest that this is not the best time, or the best environment to introduce anyone to Shakespeare. I am pretty sure that Shakespeare did not sit down to write plays which were then to be studied at great length, so that tests and exams could be set about them.

Shakespeare was a playwright, and a poet. What he wrote was meant to be enjoyed, and performed, not studied. That does not make study of Shakespeare wrong, it is just not what he intended four hundred years ago. Whichever side of the marmite effect you stand with regard to Shakespeare, I believe there is much more to unite us, than divide us.

He wrote of human emotions, of love, of melancholy, or power seeking, of anger, of the feeling of revenge, of loyalty, of deceit. He wrote about English history (albeit with an element of propaganda). All of these things are common to humanity, and so, in this respect Shakespeare’s words should be a uniting factor, not a dividing one.

There are many things in the world of religion, politics, the environment, social culture, many things which will divide us, mostly in terms of opinion. But in all of these things, there is a common humanity which unites us all. I prefer to look beyond the things which divide, and onto the things which unite. Because when we do that, we are likely to find that there are many more things which we agree on, and less on which we disagree.
