W

elcome to the June issue of The Ackworth Arrow. The weather has been on our side for sometime now. It feels like summer has arrived a little earlier, after what feels like a very long winter, we were due a break. Fingers crossed it continues. A fantastic effort was made by the village to support and cheer on the TDY as it raced through on Friday 4th May. It’s such an exciting event and the support they get must give the riders an enormous boost. Well done to everyone involved. Another community event arrives in June, 30th June to be exact. The annual Ackworth Gala is set to be a great family day out with the fancy dress theme being ‘Sporting greats’ I hope everyone is able to attend and enjoy this local tradition. Last but not least, well done to all Y6 children who completed their SAT’s in May and good luck to all Y11’s taking there GCSE’s. We have had a double whammy in our house with one doing SATs and the other doing GCSE’s. We have all survived so far :) Good luck to everyone else studying hard at the moment, I hope all your hard work and effort pays off and you become who you want to be.

Best Wishes Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 01302 534256 / 07795 387937 email: michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk www.arrowpublications.co.uk

COMMUNITY NEWS Thinking of Getting A Dog? … Think About Getting A Greyhound! Retired racing greyhounds are still young when their racing lives come to an end – and ready to adapt to a new life as great pets. These amazing athletes are people-loving, calm, gentle and patient; and often become much-valued therapy dogs. Contrary to popular belief, they don't need vast amounts of exercise and don’t need a lot of space. All they need is love and security, a comfy bed, some good food and a couple of walks each day. Greyhound Trust West Yorkshire has been finding homes for greyhounds for almost 2 decades and we want to find more! We usually have 12 to 14 greyhounds waiting for homes and as soon as a lucky one moves out there is another waiting to take its place. We welcome all enquiries and work hard at 'matchmaking' - finding the right greyhound to suit your individual circumstances – whether you are single or a family, younger or older, there can be a greyhound for you! Could YOU provide a greyhound with a loving, forever home?

Ackworth 74 Club Summer Outing Tuesday July 10th 2018 Open to Non Members Enjoy a varied and interesting day out! Coach departs Ackworth Coop 9 am. Morning in Harrogate for coffee and shopping. Then on to Ripley Castle and Gardens for an included tour of the Castle. Returning to Ackworth at 5 pm

Meet the Winning Team ! This year Ackworth’s Countrywomen were successful in the Annual Craft Competition! On April 21st in Wetherby, a team from the Ackworth Branch of the Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association entered the Branch Challenge Craft Competition with the Theme of Children’s Books. The display had to include both Craft and Cookery items to illustrate a scene from the book and the book must also feature in the display. The whole display must fit on a defined space on a table top. The Team were Sue Sidwell, Pam Grimes and Diane Morris though Sue Smith-Wilkins and Jenny Thomas also added their own small contribution. The chosen book was Alice in Wonderland and the scene from the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. The team cleverly included at least 7 Crafts, weaving, sewing, knitting,, pastry and cake making and flower arranging. Alice Doll knitted, Picnic Blanket woven, White Rabbit sewn, Pastries, cake and quiche for the picnic and a flower arrangement, all meant a very winning combination! It has been 17 years since Ackworth last won the Craft Competition so it was a cause for celebration all round, not diminished by he fact that they were , in the end, judged joint first with Shadwell Branch. Two other members were also successful, Margaret Cowley got a second in the Art Class and in the Craft Class Diane Morris was highly commended.

COMMUNITY NEWS Wow! What a Welcome! As soon as Acworth heard the news that Stage 2 of the race would be coming through the village, preparations started. Weeks before a public meeting organised by the Parish Council brought together community groups, churches, businesses, schools and residents. This was to be a community event and from then on everyone pulled together and there was a fantastic build up to the very day it’s self. During the previous weeks Adam Fletcher and his team of volunteers from the Ackworth Big Spring Clean were out busy colleting litter to ensure the village looked its very best. Helen Penty from Ackworth Needles and Pins Craft Group, obtained sponsorship from local business people enabling her to purchase wool and sewing materials. She then ran workshops, so that her group and many volunteers from the community and beyond could begin knitting, crocheting and sewing the many yards of blue and yellow bunting which was festooned around the village. Bikes, donated by residents and Shanks, were painted yellow and placed along the route. Wooden bikes, made by resident Phil Hollinworth, sponsored by the Ackworth village schools and bought by other residents were also on display. On the day, Friday May 4th despite it being a weekday and many “would be” supporters at work or in school, there were still considerable crowds lining the route awaiting the arrival of the cyclists. First through the village came the women around 10.30 am followed, later in the day, by the men’s race.

The village was buzzing with excitement throughout the whole day. On Carr Bridge playing field a big screen showed race coverage all day. Refreshments were served from a pavilion staffed by the ladies from Ackworth Needles and Pins Craft Group, milk, tea and coffee having been donated by the Coop and Spar and homemade cakes donated by Ackworth residents. All this, together with other fundraising stalls, face painting and Ice cream vans, musical entertainment outside Ackworth School, live singers outside the Brown Cow, all added to the truly great atmosphere and made it such a wonderful day! The village looked fantastic, a real testament to Ackworth’s community spirit! Well done to everyone, all the volunteers involved, who worked so hard beforehand plus everyone who turned up to watch the race and give their support on the day! The Yorkshire Air Ambulance has confirmed the village of Ackworth raised an amazing £1454.85!

I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send and who will go for us?’ Then I said, ‘Here am I! Send me.’ Isiah 6:8 Churches play a unique role in the particular place in which they are set. The church in Ackworth has a unique vocation and calling to the community we serve. Working with the community is the first priority for a church intent on renewal. This demands a great deal of hard, intentional work. When we commit ourselves to work intentionally towards a vision of what God seeks in our community, the impact on our shared common life is transformational. I’m a great believer in meeting people where they are; to be a church beyond the stone walls of our buildings and move outside the regular pattern of Sunday worship. We seek to bring church to the community, to be a visible presence to local residents, working with community partnerships to embrace and develop that which is good in our parish. We feel that this will work towards creating the kind of church that has a voice and place in the twenty first century, raising the visible profile of your church here in Ackworth, whilst meeting the needs and challenges in the community and building up the Body of Christ. This is your church, a church that has Faith, Hope and Love in abundance.

SPRING INTO SUMMER CLEAN REFRESH REVIVE

This is an exciting time; I’m excited for the many things to look forward to in the coming months: enquiry courses, a parish pilgrimage, Confirmations, all signs of the Kingdom. I want to leave you excited for the future of your church, so I finish by offering to you my energy and enthusiasm to improve, progress and to continue to make successful this parish. As your new parish priest I offer you my prayers and blessings daily. Revd. Charlene
