Your Community News Linda Launches More Flowers for Ackworth Appeal. Local resident, Linda Phillips, who spends time walking in North Yorkshire and Cumbria, seeing the beautiful displays of flowers sported by many villages that she visited, was prompted to ask “Why hasn’t Ackworth got more flowers?” On returning home form one of her days out Linda became determined to help her own village become a more colourful place to live. However, the task was not going to be easy. With limited funding since the “cuts” apart from hanging baskets, Councils have been reluctant to set aside further funds for beds and flowers. Linda quickly realised that if Ackworth was to have more flower beds she was going to have to do the job herself! She badgered the Council for permission to plant her first flower bed, which was to be at the top of Station Rd. County Councillor and Ackworth Resident Alan Garbutt who was sympathetic to the cause added his support too. Then, with permission granted, Linda assisted by her husband Chris, some funding from the Ackworth Ladies 74 Club to help with buying plants and offers of help from Club Members, in particular Sue Sidwell, who helped with planting and Jayne Cooper who supplied the top soil, the work began. Watched by passers-by who expressed interest, praise and pleasure in the project, Linda and helpers were delighted and pleased to finally see the first flower bed in place. Not much yet but the winter pansies will slowly but surely be a very welcome and colourful start to making Ackworth a more flower friendly place. Linda is hoping that other villages groups, Clubs, Societies and individuals will be motivated and inspired to fund additional beds throughout the village and ensure that next Spring Ackworth is a brighter place to live! So, here’s hoping! Well Done Linda!

Your Community News Ackworth 74 Club Christmas Candlelight Celebration This year, as always, the 74 Club Candlelight Celebration was given the “thumbs Up” by local residents. Despite the weather and the road works, it was again very well attended by Club Members, friends and supporters from the Community. The Christmas Celebration, a blend of Carols, Poems and Readings, began with a Blessing by Methodist Minister Rev’d Naomi Kaiga, was this year, superbly supported and accompanied by the Ackworth Community Choir, who performed their own delightful additions to the evening. Over 60 people attended, a retiring collection was taken and this was augmented by the Choir returning their own donation from the Club to boost the final total to £210 to be donated to the Prince of Wales Hospice in Pontefract. Afterwards, in the true spirit of Christmas, everyone who attended was entertained to a free Faith Supper in the Methodist Church Hall. The 74 Club would like to thank everyone who supported this event and helped to make it so successful.

Please note There will be no meeting of the 74 Club at the Methodist Church in January as Club Members will be dining out together at the Kings Croft Hotel and Restaurant. The next 74 Club meeting will be on Tuesday February 11th at 7.30 pm when the Speaker will be Jane Mckeown on The Life of an Army Wife. New Members and visitors always welcome.
