Welcome to the January

issue of The Ackworth Arrow.

I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and managed to spend some quality time with those they love. Congratulations to everyone who has been a part of organising Christmas in Ackworth throughout November and December. Whether you have organised an event, helped out on the day or donated raffle prizes, every bit of help is appreciated at what is the busiest time of the year for us all. Thank you to both Roy and Dominic who deliver the Arrow every month in all weather, I really appreciate it. Special thanks to all the advertisers as well as the people who supply the Arrow every month with information on what is going on in the villages Schools, Churches, Community Halls and general events. Thank you to Sue Smith Wilkins who helps support and promote community events each month by making sure I have all the information I need for the Arrow. The deadline for the February issue is Wednesday 16th January. The February issue will be distributed the last weekend in January.

I would like to wish you all a Very Happy and Prosperous New Year Michelle Sidebottom

Community News Christmas Candlelight Celebration. As in previous years the 74 Club Candlelight Celebration proved a firm favourite with local residents! The Celebration of Carols Readings and Poems presented by Club Members, supported by Members of the St Cuthbert’s Music Group, was attended by over 80 people, Club Members, friends and residents. Afterwards, in the true spirit of Christmas, everyone who attended was entertained to a free Faith Supper in the Methodist Church Hall. There was a retiring collection which raised £180 and this year, being 100 years since the end of the First World War, was donated to the Brutish Legion. Mr John Gardner, ex Chairman of the local branch of the Legion was in attendance to receive the cheque from 74 Club President Anne Morgan. Mr Gardner thanked everyone and stated that the money would go to the Poppy Fund. The Club would like to thank everyone who supported this event and helped to make it so successful. Please note There will be no meeting of the 74 Club in January at the Methodist Church Hall, as Members will be dining out together for their Club New Year Meal which will be at the Kings Croft Hotel in Pontefract. The next Club Meeting will be on February 12th 2019. Anyone interested in joining the 74 Club should contact Sue on 615608.

Community News Volunteers help rescued animals Volunteers are crucial to the operation of the RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch, helping in the shops, caring for animals rescued from cruelty, driving RSPCA vehicles, tending to the grounds or fundraising. Catherine is a regular volunteer who has helped at the Animal Centre on the Great North Road, near Bawtry, for six years. It was her love of animals that encouraged her to volunteer for the RSPCA. “I always love to hear about our animals finding happiness in their new forever homes,” says Catherine. “As a volunteer, the training and support at the Centre is so good. I am now confident in a variety of grooming ad cleaning routines.” Although Catherine primarily works with the rabbits, she has a great love of dogs and owns two of her own – Carly and Roxy. Catherine has experience of working with the Centre’s cats, dogs and rabbits. Being flexible certainly helps when you work with animals! If you would like to know more about the rewarding role of RSPCA volunteer and the varied opportunities at your local branch, call in at the Animal Centre (open six days 11am-4pm, closed Wednesdays), telephone 01302 719790 or email info@rspcadrb.org.uk.

St Cuthbert’s & All Saints Dear friends, I’m always delighted when the phone rings and on the other end is someone from the parish asking about a baptism (christening). Jesus was himself baptised and he told his followers to baptise others as a sign of God’s love. I always try my best to make baptism a wonderful and memorable occasion that marks the beginning of a long and happy relationship with the church family. But have you ever wondered why Jesus was baptised? The baptism of Jesus took place on the banks of the River Jordan by his cousin John. The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus in the form of a dove, a universal symbol of peace and love. From this glory comes a voice, the voice of God the Father, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased”, a voice to which the Gospel writers Matthew, Mark and Luke all bear witness. The baptism of Jesus perfectly represents the Trinity, the voice of the Father, Jesus the son in the water and the Holy Spirit descending like a dove. The story of Jesus' baptism is a wonderful time to remember our own baptism. We may not be able to remember the actual moment, especially if we were small babies. However, we can remember the meaning of our baptism. Each year the church here in Ackworth has the privilege of baptising many new Christians, reminding me that the church still has a place in the hearts of many families as they pick up the phone to get in contact. It also reminds me of the wonderful ministry I have in this parish and that at times of great joy and celebration I’m invited into your lives. Not many churches have the claim to fame of two fonts, but at St Cuthbert’s we can make that claim. Under the tower there is a restored Norman font mounted on part of a pillar from the old church. This font was believed to be buried for safety during the Civil War and was returned to the church in the 1920s to become the "old" font. The “new” font dates back to 1663, so I can’t even begin to imagine how many baptisms have taken place in these two fonts alone, not to mention the baptisms at All Saints church. Every year the church celebrates the Baptism of Christ (13th January) and we pray for all who have been baptised into the church in the previous year, and all those who have ever been baptised in the parish of Ackworth. Children, adults, the famous characters of our village, the privileged and the poor, all stood at the same font. Status falls away in the presence of God and at that moment we become brothers and sisters through our shared baptism. Everybody is remembered and cherished. Revd Charlene
