Welcome to the February issue of The Ackworth Arrow.
Did you manage to leave behind the excesses of Christmas and find motivation in January for new plans and ideas? I managed to book a week away and have started Pilates so I had a few moments of inspiration. I hope you were lucky enough to avoid the dreaded bugs which the majority of us have had to endure. If not, I hope you and your family are on the road to recovery. It seems that everyone you speak to has someone close who has suffered. I’ll be first in line for the flu jab next year! Just wanted to say a big thank you to all of the Arrow delivery staff who month after month, deliver your arrow on time, no matter what the weather. The deadline for the March issue will be Wednesday 7th February which is a bit earlier than normal due to the half term holiday. The March Arrow will be delivered by the last weekend in February.
Best Wishes Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 01302 534256 / 07795 387937 email: michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk
COMMUNITY NEWS The 74 Club Dine out at Kings Croft! Every January the Ladies of the Ackworth 74 Club enjoy a special night, dining out together at a local venue of choice. This year the Club chose to have their New Year Celebratory Meal at the Kings Croft Restaurant Pontefract. The evening began with a Welcome drink of Prosecco before the 43 ladies, Members’ of the Club, went on to enjoy a delicious 4 course choice menu, beautifully presented and served. The meal then concluded with coffee and mints. This year the Liquorice Singers were “on hand” to entertain and Members were treated to a varied programme, joining in with some of the songs. There was also a Raffle and Quiz to complete the entertainment for the evening. All in all the Members agreed it had been a very enjoyable and successful event and a great start to the Club’s Programme for the year 2018. Members please note the next Meeting of the 74 Club will be on Tuesday February 13th 7.30 pm at the Methodist Church Schoolroom when there will be a talk and demonstration given by Andrew and Jan Lloyd on Belgian Chocolate Making.

COMMUNITY NEWS Make 2018 The Year You Volunteer! Can you help? The Ackworth and Pontefract Group of Contact The Elderly are seeking to recruit new volunteer Drivers and Hosts. Contact the Elderly is a charity which aims to combat loneliness and isolation feltby older people living alone. The Charity organises Sunday afternoon tea parties, once a month for older guests, aged over 75 and living alone, especially those who need the opportunity to get out and about and socialise. Volunteer Drivers pick up older guests from their home and escort them safely to the home of a Volunteer Host. The Host provides an afternoon tea and lots of friendly conversation. Could you be a Volunteer Driver just one Sunday a month, 6/7 times a year, for about 3 hours? Do you have a warm and welcoming home and like entertaining? Could you host a tea party 3 pm – 5 pm, just once a year for 6/7 older residents? For more information, or to attend a tea party and meet the guests and find out more before making a commitment, then contact Sue Smith-Wilkins on 01977 615608 or visit contact-theelderly.org.uk or call Yorkshire Officer Kath Lloyd on 01535 280002 or email Kath Lloyd on kath.lloyd@contact-the-elderly.org.uk

At the end of last year the library said a fond farewell to its Library manager, Helen Shaw who has been with us since we opened. We wish her well in her re rement. Since her appointment the library has gone from strength to strength. We welcome Leah Bruce May as our new library manager, who is already bringing some fresh ideas to the library. Our Christmas celebra ons were once more well a ended. Sixty children visited Santa on our 'Santa Day', and our door stats show we had 345 visitors through the door. Thanks to everyone who supported our raffle and other fundraising ac vi es over the Christmas period. Please con nue to support us. Sadly one of our volunteers, Chrissy Gusco died, and our thanks go to her family for giving us a generous dona on in her name.

The library con nues to thrive and we will be celebra ng our 5th Birthday in March. Look out for how we will be celebra ng, and come along and support us. We are also looking for dona ons of gi bags and unwanted Christmas presents to aid us in our fundraising ac vi es. Would you like to be part of the management team at the library? The Trustees are looking to expand the group, this is a voluntary posi on. Have you any skills that would be useful to us e.g.HR experience, accoun ng, secretarial, administra ve etc. You can obtain further details from the library manager by calling in at the library or by e-mailing leah.ackworthcommunitylibrary@outlook.com. New volunteers are always welcome. We especially need extra volunteers on Tuesday and Thursday a ernoons and Saturday mornings. If you can't commit to a regular weekly me, perhaps you could help us out with some of our events.
