Challenge Rev Paul Fox... At the beginning of a new year, many of us will be putting our hope in the future, some hoping that this new year will be better than the last. For some this will be a challenge. 2019 was not the best of years for me. But within it, there came hope for the future, and the challenges that that future will set. I was inspired by the fundraising efforts of one person, raising money for the Prince of Wales Hospice. I was inspired by the years of campaigning of one woman seeking social justice. I am inspired by many individuals who work for the benefit of others, and in particular those who battle difficult circumstance, or constant obstruction, but they carry on. Because of this, I have been inspired to step out faithfully, and hopefully, into 2020, and to do something different, something that would help to make a difference. This year, I will be celebrating my sixtieth birthday! So I have decided that I would concentrate on raising money for a charity. Inspired by the 50/50 challenge of Michelle from Michelle’s Flowers, I took advice from family and friends, and I have decided to try and achieve up to sixty challenges/fundraising events, or challenges containing the number 60. My family very kindly suggested lots of challenges, such as running 60K in a month, walking 60 miles, swimming 60 lengths of a swimming pool. Those are the easiest. The Yorkshire three peaks being amongst the most difficult. Sixty theme park rides, zipwire, abseiling, and skydiving will provide a personal challenge. I am afraid of heights! Eating sixty pickled eggs in one sitting and sixty sit-ups in 60 seconds are amongst my least favourite/ impossible pile! I have chosen to support Cancer Research UK. In the UK there are around 363,000 new diagnoses of cancer, that is a new diagnosis every 2 minutes. Each year there are around 164,000 deaths due to cancer. Which means that over 50% of people survive cancer, largely due to improvements in treatment, which come about because of research. I grew up in a home with my Mum, Dad and older brother. All of them have died as a result of cancer, my brother died only last year aged 67. I am hoping that by supporting the work of Cancer Research UK further improvements in treatment will increase the number of people who survive cancer in the future. I am hoping that many people will join me in supporting this work by sponsoring some or all of my challenges. Details of these challenges and my progress will appear regularly, and also via a blog at: pauls60thchallenges.wordpress.com. You can donate to me in person or on-line at https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/pauls-giving-page-2078 Here’s to the future! Paul Fox

Celebrating the success of Ackworth tennis club at the L.T.A.Yorkshire Tennis Awards Ackworth residents Don Saul and Alice Robson’s achievements at Ackworth tennis club were celebrated at the Holiday Inn, Garforth at the LTA Yorkshire Tennis Awards ceremony on the 9thDecember. Club Chairman, Don Saul was awarded ‘Volunteer of the Year’; and Head Coach, Alice Robson, was named ‘Coach of the Year for 2019’ at the recent L.T.A. Yorkshire Tennis Awards. The awards recognise the winners’ outstanding contributions to grassroots tennis in Yorkshire, and both Alice and Don fought off stiff competition to win the recognition they undoubtedly deserve for their parts in transforming Ackworth Tennis Club from a club on the verge of extinction at the start of 2018 to the flourishing, inclusive club it has become. “I doubt that there is any other Club in the country that has experienced the membership growth that Ackworth Tennis Club has achieved - from 17 to 136 in 18 months; a 700% increase” explains Richard Garrett C.E.O. of The Tim Henman Foundation who wrote the award nomination for Don. “This is down to the quality of the leadership and the coaching. Don Saul and Alice Robson need particular praise. They have embraced change and external partnerships with Ackworth School, Yorkshire Tennis, The Tim Henman Foundation and BECSLink.” Don’s leadership was recognised by the award panel as being instrumental in helping to convert the club into an inclusive, diverse and dynamic organisation. Giving freely of his time and energy, Don has worked tirelessly with a myriad of partners to develop the club and its links within the local community.

Having taken over leadership of the Club at the start of 2018, he was involved in the appointment of Alice as Head coach, in conjunction with Ackworth School Head Anton Maree, Yorkshire Tennis, the Tim Henman Foundation and BECSLlink. This has proved pivotal in the Club’s turnaround, boosting membership and allowing for the provision of a comprehensive coaching programme.
Wakefield Road, Ackworth, Pontefract WF7 7AZ
A true champion of ‘Tennis Opened Up’, Don has worked with the LTA Disability Officer to ensure that courts are wheelchair accessible; and forging community links with College Lane Surgery in Ackworth, he is currently working to develop an innovative social prescription pilot scheme, to help patients with health challenges move from medication to exercise.

Her community work has introduced tennis activity to over 2,000 school children at 17 local Primary schools, and she has supported the development of 2 further coaches at the Club. Working closely with the club committee she has organised 5 Open Days attended by over 300 people and has been instrumental in developing competitive play at the club with the introduction of Ladder Leagues, Internal Competitions and Team Challenge events with other clubs in the Wakefield area.

Everyone at Ackworth Girls Football would like to wish you all a very happy New Year!! Our first Christmas has been a fantastic one, kicking off with a fantastic party for all the club. We also held a fundraising event on December 23rd and you may have met some of our girls at the Co Op in Ackworth, packing bags. The turnout was amazing and we really were overwhelmed at the support we received from the village. Games and training are back in full force and its wonderful to see everyone back on the pitch. Our focus now is on looking forward to this year and building our teams, making the club bigger and stronger than ever. Be it fitness, friendship, skills or just a new hobby, if you or anyone you know would be interested in becoming part of this fantastic club, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
