At their November Club event the ladies of the Ackworth 74 Club enjoyed a pleasant evening of friendship, fun and flowers!
A Most Enjoyable and The speaker and demonstrator Michelle Grainger of Michelle’s Flowers 76 Baghill Successful Evening! Lane Pontefract, supported by her sister Karen, gave a very informative, interesting and most enjoyable talk. Michelle spoke of her life in flowers, explaining how her business has developed and too of her own philosophy for life and commitment to the community. Michelle and her family are enthusiastic, regular, fund raisers for the Prince of Wales Hospice and have, over the years, raised several thousand pounds for this worthwhile local charity. All this, whilst arranging flowers and explaining how each arrangement could be enhanced and made special. Michelle made four separate arrangements, all with a Christmas theme which demonstrated her skill and technique. One was an arrangement built around a reindeer silhouette, another a table decoration, sited in a cracker and two different door garlands. Each of these finished arrangements were sold off, with proceeds going to the Hospice. The evening raised £220 in total and Michelle also sold some other floral arrangements. The Club wish to thank Michelle for her talk and express their support and admiration for all her hard work and efforts on behalf of the community and local charities! If you would like to know more about the 74 Club and perhaps become a member, call Sue on 615608

St Cuthbert’s & All Saints Dear Friends, Over the next few weeks many of us will be making preparations for Christmas day, me included! However, when I was shopping a few days ago I was casually looking through various shop windows. They were full of glowing lights, decorations and the latest deals enticing people to buy. To my surprise in one window I saw the traditional crib scene, the baby Jesus in a manger surrounded by Mary, Joseph, the shepherds and the animals. I stood for a moment and gazed at it. I reflected on how many of those passing by had probably not looked twice at this crib scene, because it appeared to have no meaning for them. I would like to tell you about what the crib scene means for this parish. During December this parish will give a home to the seemingly insignificant figures of Mary and Joseph. These small knitted figures will travel from home to home across our parish, staying overnight with different people and families before moving on in their journey to the next home, until they return to Church on Christmas eve. They travel with a diary (and knitted donkey of course) and each home they visit is encouraged to write about their stay will them. This symbolic journey of the knitted figures through Advent will generate some of the most profound insights into that first Christmas. This parish will capture the hardship of Mary and Joseph’s journey and by receiving the figures we accept that first Gospel message into our homes, making room in our hearts for God’s message and promise of love given to us in the infant Jesus. So as we await the arrival of our knitted Mary and Joseph, let us be reminded of why they were there in Bethlehem and the circumstances in which Mary’s child was born. Jesus was born into a world which at that time was full of fear, violence and war much like it is today. What then does the crib mean for our world? It seems to me that what humankind is looking for is peace, peace from a troubled world. The baby born at Bethlehem that Holy night is a seed of hope for that peace, in which one day all races and cultures will be one loving community, where love and peace will reign. You see, whoever we are, each one of us is loved in the eyes of God. In Christ we are accepted and loved. Although in present times we have not yet fully learnt to accept and love one another. At Christmas… especially at Christmas… we welcome Mary, Joseph and Jesus into this Parish, His home, His church and we ask that his peace and love dwells amongst us. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a blessed and peaceful Christmas. With God’s Blessing Revd. Charlene
