Your Community News

As you can see, we have made a change to our Club Logo, in honour of our Armed Forces both past and present. Having members of staff and the Ladies Team who have served our country, it’s obviously something very close to our hearts. The girls observed 2 min silence before each match and wore their poppies with pride. After returning from our half term break, it’s all go at Ackworth Girls. We have now moved to Crofton Academy for winter training on their impressive astro pitches. Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen some fantastic results within the club, with our Open Age Ladies Team getting through to the second round of the cup. That weekend, we we’re undefeated across the entire club which with a lot of new players, its something that we are immensely proud of!! This month we have been proud to welcome three new sponsors on board, kitting the club out in some very smart match day jackets. We would like to say a huge thankyou to: The Boot and Shoe, Ackworth – Open Age Ladies Team 5 Towns Helping Hands – Under 15s Vogans Accountancy, Ackworth – Under 13s, 12s and 10s. Its amazing to see so many local businesses getting behind Ackworth Girls and helping us make sure all our teams are supplied with everything they need to keep warm and dry during training and matches. We have also been running a JustGiving page on our Facebook page to raise funds for training wear and skins and the response has been overwhelming. It just shows the support we have behind us within the community and beyond. As always, we are welcoming new players so if you or anyone you know would like to come and have a go, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. 1st Ackworth Scout Group As usual this half term has seen all sections of the group busy with various activities. The Beaver section had a thrilling time ‘Sleeping with sharks’ when they visited The Deep. On the Friday evening they had a 2 hour tour led by a member of staff who told them things and took them to places the public are not able to discover for themselves. They then took part in various craft activities, designing their own T shirts and making key rings and badges. After supper they bedded down for the night next to the tanks. All the lights go off at 11pm so only a faint flow comes from the tanks. After a good breakfast the tired Beavers made their way home. It was a thrilling experience for our youngest section. The group held its own Bonfire and Fireworks party on the 5th. Although it had been a wet few days prior to the event Scouts are renowned for their firelighting expertise!! This proved no exception as even with wet wood, one match and the fire was a roaring success. Whilst the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts went off to play night games in the woods, the parents enjoyed their burgers, hot dogs and drinks. Then everyone came together for the Bonfire and a spectacular display of fireworks. The children then enjoyed their Bonfire food. Fortunately the evening turned out to be dry with a clear moon and everyone agreed it had been a successful evening. All sections took part in the Remembrance Day Service and presentation of flags at St. Cuthbert’s Church. Th Cubs had made figures of service personnel prior to the event. Each person whose name is listed on the War Memorial near the roundabout in Ackworth has been honoured by the Cubs. Each figure was mounted on a wooden base and each individuals name is added underneath. The figures are mainly of soldiers, but also included in Ackworth’s records and remembered by the Cubs were sailors, airmen, a Wren and Air raid wardens. The figures have been displayed around the church. As Christmas draws ever nearer the group already has plans in place. The Beavers are undertaking a night time trail in Pontefract identifying various historical points, which will help them towards their Explorer badge. A few days before Christmas they are having a Christmas sleepover. The Cubs have elected to go Ten Pin bowling followed by a meal. Our congratulations go to Tom Peacock Ackworth’s Cub Leader and Leader in charge, who has recently been awarded ‘The Mayor says thanks Award’ for his services to Scouting in the Pontefract and Castleford District. We welcome after Christmas any new members who wish to join the Scouting adventure. All sections meet Tuesdays. Beavers 6-8 years. 676906 Cubs 8-11 years. 611225 Scouts 11- 14 years. 730188
