Editor’s letter...

Welcome to the December

issue of the Ackworth Arrow.

Apparently, we will soon be saying goodbye to the warmest year on record. Let’s hope we don’t pay for it over the winter months with Arctic conditions! We all like a bit of seasonal weather (but just a bit).

This month’s issue has lots of information on all the local Christmas fayres, activities and events as well as service times over the Christmas period for St Cuthbert's & All Saints.

I hope everyone enjoys the fun and excitement of this festive month but please, if you can, spare a thought for our elderly neighbours who may not have any visitors this Christmas.

The deadline for the January issue will be earlier than normal due to the festive period and will be Monday 12th December. The Arrow will be delivered the last full weekend in December.

Hepworth Band and local school choirs fundraising for Parkinson’s UK this Christmas.

One of Yorkshire’s top brass bands, the Hepworth Band, join forces with choirs from Ackworth School and Wakefield Foundation Grammar School to present “Countdown to Christmas” at 6.30pm on the 4th December at the Meeting House, Ackworth School, WF7 7LT to raise funds for Parkinson’s UK. This musical extravaganza of seasonal music, carols and festive favourites is guaranteed to get you into the Christmas spirit and offers something for everyone to enjoy.

Chrissie Fielden, Regional Fundraiser for Parkinson’s UK in the Yorkshire and Humber region says “this is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the musical talent of the Hepworth Brass Band and the school choirs and to get everyone into the festive mood whilst raising money for Parkinson’s UK.” If you want to be part of this festive musical extravaganza tickets are available from Ackworth School office on 01977 611401, Hepworth Brass Band by emailing Secretary@hepworthband.com, on line at https:// www.parkinsons.org.uk/content/countdown-christmas-concert, by emailing fundraising@parkinsons.org.uk or calling 020 7963 9330. Parish Council Santa Day 10th December 2016 10:00am to 3pm Parish Council Community Centre

Invitation Only Event SANTA WILL BE VISITING THE COMMUNITY CENTRE ON BELL LANE FROM 10AM TIL 3PM. THIS IS A FREE EVENT FOR CHILDREN AGED UP TO 11 WHO LIVE IN THE VILLAGE. TICKETS ARE DISTRIBUTED VIA BELL LANE SCHOOL, HOWARD SCHOOL AND MILL DAM SCHOOL. IF YOUR CHILD IS PRESCHOOL OR ATTENDS A PRIMARY SCHOOL OUTSIDE OF THE VILLAGE PLEASE CONTACT THE PARISH COUNCIL FOR A TICKET.

Good to see Simon Newton, recovering from knee surgery, and founder member Charlie Lines performing so well in local Park Runs. On the first day of the month we had a 1,2,3, in the Nostel Park Run with Mark Mills, Ian Richardson & Mick Wigglesworth filling the first three places, Mark & Ian were also well placed on 15th & 23rd, on the same day Rebecca Winter finished second lady in the Conniston 15k, in 72’28” We had eleven entries in the Yorkshire Marathon on the 9th, first home was Steven Dennis in 3 hours 19’51” he, and four others set personal best times.

On the 9th a coach load (48) made our annual visit to the Tissington Trail half marathon picking up the first male and female team prizes, along with 32 personal bests, Ian Richardson was first home for the club in 79’24” Rebecca Winter was fifth lady overall in 82’27” both personal bests, founder member Paul Zywicky set a decade personal best.

On 15/16th our Ultra Man Simon Bennett ran the Autumn 100 mile race along the Thames Path & Ridgeway in 22 hours 40’55”, 12’ faster than his previous best.

Congratulations to another of our longer distance runners Roy Young who completed his 116th marathon, in the Snowdon event, overtaking club legend Ken Bingley for the most marathons completed.

On the last day of the month another coach load (50) ran the Yorkshire Coast 10k at Scarborough, with 8 personal bests, first home was Ricard Ritucci in 39’34”, on the same day Ian Richardson ran the Worksop Half Marathon in 83’53” Flying the Yorkshire flag abroad this month have been Shaun Bell & Dawn Branley in the Lisbon Half Marathon, Mel & Tim Owen making their annual visit to Australia running in the Mudgeeraba Park Run, Rebecca Winter in the ABRaS Mina 10k in Dubai, & Martin Stearn & Terry Sinar in the Benejuzar 10k in Spain.

COMMUNITY NEWS Ackworth Needles and Pins Craft Day Saturday 3rd December 10:00 to 16:00 Parish Council Community Centre

Contact The Elderly Rev’d Dr. Paul Fox and his wife Jackie host a Contact The Elderly Tea party, welcoming six older local residents into their own home to enjoy a delicious Afternoon Tea. The guests at the party, with an average age of 91 were all collected from their homes by their individual drivers and meet up at the home of a different Party Host each month. This month it was the turn of Paul and Jackie Fox who found time in their own busy calendar to support this worthwhile Charity.

Contact The Elderly Tea Parties take place on Sunday afternoon from 3 pm to 5 pm.. Hosts are asked to provide a simple afternoon tea for 6/7 older residents, just once a year. Other Ackworth Residents also act as drivers and drive on Sunday afternoons as and when they are available.

If you would like to get involved, as a driver or to host a Tea or if you would like to attend a Tea Call Sue on 615608 for further details.

Ackworth Calendars 2017 This year produced in conjunction with The Ackworth Heritage Group containing 12 by-gone pictures of Ackworth.

The cost will be £5 for A4 size (as last year) or £6 for a double A4 size (for larger photographs). Pre-book you calendar with Bill Branston now, or buy from the usual outlets from late November.

Ackworth Needles and Pins is a relaxed local group ran by crafters for crafters.

We are hosting a crafting day and would like to invite you to come along for the whole day and make something special or just drop by for an hour or two to finish a project.

As always we will be doing lots of chatting, drinking tea and eating cake. Please join us and make the day a success.

The 74 Club Get all Wrapped up for Christmas!

Thoughts of the coming Christmas Season were certainly in the minds of ladies at the Ackworth 74 Club Meeting in November, when they gathered to hear Jo Thompson speak and demonstrate clever Christmas parcel packaging ideas.

Jo had solutions for wrapping bottles, jars and awkward shaped biscuit tins, making the whole process look amazingly easy!

Then it was the turn of Club Members to try their hand at making a Christmas Gift Bag. They spent a merry and very productive evening and everyone who took part was surprised and pleased to see how they could now create and devise their own individual Christmas packages to suit the size and shape of even the most challenging gift.

St Cuthbert’s & All Saints So here it is Merry Christmas.

Again!

As I get older, I have noticed that time seems to fly past me. During the last twelve months I retired from my usual work, and it seems that time is flying even faster. I have little idea what has happened over the last nine months. I seem to get up, and before I know what day it is, it is time for bed! It seems such a short time ago that I was celebrating Christmas and New Year, and here we are again, rolling rapidly to another season of celebration.

But if we think that time is flying for us, read what the Bible says about time in God’s view; “a thousand years are like one day” 2 Peter 3:8. That must make time pass like light speed! But then that would be to misunderstand eternity, and God’s place in it, because the same verse also says “one day is like a thousand years”, which sounds like many a university lecture!

The view of eternity that most people have, is that it is just never ending time. The reality is probably closer to the absence of time. In other words, God does not exist in time at all, he exists outside of time.

A complex thought! But what this means in reality, is that God can celebrate the birth of Jesus continually, not just at Christmas. So what about us?

What this means, is that if God can celebrate continually, then so can we. Christmas is a time when we can come together in celebration, whether that means attending Carol Services in church before Christmas, attending Midnight Communion on Christmas Eve, celebrating with family or friends on Christmas day, or just plain eating too much! It means a lot of celebration crammed into a few days, with the inevitably prolonged commercial preparations lasting several months.

But what we can do as Christians, is to celebrate the birth of Jesus every day. We can celebrate in different ways, the fact that God sent His Son, from eternity, and so outside of time, into the world, and so into time.

However you are celebrating this Christmas time, I hope and pray that all goes well, and to plan. But I also hope and pray, that when those few days are over, you will still be celebrating the fact that God sent His Son into the world. And I hope and pray those celebrations will last until next Christmas.
