elcome to the August issue of The Ackworth Arrow. The Ackworth Gala proved to be a huge success, I am sure the weather helped but you can’t take away the hard work, professionalism and commitment shown from all the volunteers and organisers. These events are what make our villages special, it’s great to get involved an feel like you are contributing to something which brings great joy and lasting memories. It is what community spirit is all about. Well done everyone involved and I hope everyone who attended had a fantastic day. As we go to print, y6 Sat results have been released, I hope your children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews have all done well. I hope the hard work these youngsters, and the staff in school put in, get the results they deserve. Wow, what a summer those y11’s are now enjoying with GCSE’s firmly behind them! Fingers crossed for 23rd August and good luck everyone. The deadline for the September issue of the Ackworth Arrow is 15th August. The September issue will be delivered by 31st August. COMMUNITY NEWS Thinking of getting a dog? … Think about getting a Greyhound! Retired racing greyhounds are still young when their racing lives come to an end – and ready to adapt to a new life as great pets. These amazing athletes are people-loving, calm, gentle and patient; and often become much-valued therapy dogs. Contrary to popular belief, they don't need vast amounts of exercise and don’t need a lot of space. All they need is love and security, a comfy bed, some good food and a couple of walks each day. Greyhound Trust West Yorkshire has been finding homes for greyhounds for almost 2 decades and we want to find more! We usually have 12 to 14 greyhounds waiting for homes and as soon as a lucky one moves out there is another waiting to take its place. We welcome all enquiries and work hard at 'matchmaking' - finding the right greyhound to suit your individual circumstances – whether you are single or a family, younger or older, there can be a greyhound for you! Could YOU provide a greyhound with a loving, forever home?

Ackworth’s Glorious Gala Day!

Ackworth Gala started in 1977 initially to celebrate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee but then it became an annual event and there has been a Gala Day, the last Saturday in June on the Carr Bridge Playing Fields ever since. The Gala, comprising of a Parade, arena events, fundraising stalls and activities for the children, is always popular and well attended. However, Ackworth Gala Day 2018 will probably go down in local history as one of the best Gala Days ever! Superb organisation by the Parish Council, aided and abetted by the wonderful weather and the fact that there were so many organisations represented ensured there was much for the public to enjoy. The procession, led by Knottingley Silver Band, Gala Queen Macey Firth from Mill Dam School, and Attendants Heidi Taha,

Bell Lane School and Isobel Gordon, Ackworth Howard School. Then followed the Parade, participants in Sporting Greats themed Fancy Dress, from local schools, churches and other local groups, too numerous to mention. The Gala was opened by Parish Councillor Chairman Sarah Balfour followed by the judging of the Fancy Dress. The winners were:Under 5s Jackson Kelleher as Frankie Dettori (pictured with runner up Pixie Pell as Paula Radcliffe). Age 6-8 Jacob Ellis and local cricket hero Graham Stevenson (pictured with runners up Oscar Harris as Dennis Taylor and Lailah Bailey-Gough as boxer Laila Ali) Over 9s Caitlin Siddons as Fuleco the Armadillo - the official mascot of the Brazil World Cup 2014 (runner up Edie Perry as Lester Piggott).

7

Many businesses and organisations took the opportunity to have stalls around the arena, Ackworth Road Runners Junior Section, Brackenhill Allotments, the Lifeboat institution, Ackworth Community Library were among many other groups with stalls raising money for their individual charities or interests. John Atha did a great job on the “mic” holding the whole afternoon together and giving a brilliant commentary enabling everyone to be well informed about the afternoon’s events. Entertainment in the arena was provided by local dance group CG Dance Academy and the Shadowquest Dog Display Team and more from Knottingley Silver Band. There were more stalls then ever this year and much more to interest everyone, adults and children alike. The Parish Council had, once again, generously provided free Bouncy Castles and a Climbing Wall and many children and young people took advantage, trying out their skills or just enjoying the fun! All in all, a very successful Gala Day and much money raised for good causes!

Dear Friends You’ve heard the phrase ‘Life’s a games, Football is serious’ well this phrase is well versed in my house. If you think that England haven’t got a prayer in the World Cup this year, then I would invite you to think again. As I’m writing this we as a Nation are eagerly awaiting the semi-final match. By the time you read this the World Cup, the tennis at Wimbledon and the tour de France will be finished. I have no way of predicating the future so I don’t The Ackworth Summer Gala know the outcome. But what I can say, is that in my house I have two football mad men, and the World Cup has been a source of great excitement and anxiety. I know that for many across this parish July in particular will have been either a month of great joy or immense disappointment. When the football competition hots up, all restraint goes out the window. I’m sure there have been many more prayers sent forth from pubs and front rooms as the tension built, than from anywhere else in the parish, in affect this parish has become a hotbed for prayer activity. But this is exactly what prayer should be, an honest word from the heart, prayer is about an honest exchange with God, placing our tensions and intensities at God’s door. God doesn’t have delicate ears, and we don’t need to shield God from what he already knows. God can deal with our emotions and honesty. There are many different ways to pray, as many ways as there are people reading this. Praying and having a faith plays an important role in many sport people’s lives not to mention those who play and enjoy the beautiful game. So as emotions run high, as we continue to watch the many sporting events still to come, The Open Golf Carnoustie, Women’s world cup hockey, Cricket at Edgbaston, European sports championships, Glasgow and Berlin and the Ryder cup, Paris remember our commitment to a team, through thick and thin, through the brilliance and disappointment. Also remember that this image is not so different from our Christian life, a life lived with dedication, passion and at times frustration. But be assured that England (in all our sporting achievements) have a prayer because we are praying, however and whatever that prayer might look like… God can handle it. To the beautiful game. Whatever that game is…..
