COMMUNITY NEWS The 40th Anniversary Gala was a Fantastic Success!
Glorious weather and tremendous support from the village community helped make this year’s Gala one of the best ever! The first Ackworth Gala was held in 1977 to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee. This turned into an annual event and there has been a Gala each June at Carr Bridge Playing Field ever since. The Gala, comprising of a parade, arena events, fundraising stalls and activities for the children is always popular and well attended. This year's event took place on Saturday June 24th. The Parade led by the Melton Mowbray Toy Soldiers Marching Band left the Tarmac Depot at noon, arriving at Carr Bridge at approx 12.30 pm. In the procession were representatives from the three Ackworth Primary Schools and many other village groups and organisations who entered into the sprit of the day wearing a huge display of brilliant Disney themed fancy dress costumes. The Gala Queen Megan Mackay (Howard School) and her attendants Rachel Lubelski (Bell Lane) and Lauren Askew (Mill Dam) arrived in an open topped Mini. Cllr. Sarah Balfour officially opened the Gala when she crowned this year's Gala Queen. During the afternoon Pedal Power vs Parkour put on a fantastic arena display which combined the incredible skill, balance and power of a trials rider and the finesse of a gymnast / parkour athlete. Their performance thrilled the crowds. Also in the arena were displays from and local dance group CG Dance Academy. The Bouncy Castles and Climbing Wall, provided free by the Council, were very popular with the children. Many thousands of pounds were raised for good causes from over 30 fundraising stalls. The stalls were provided free of charge to local community groups and charities. There was a great atmosphere and everyone attending the Gala this year seemed to have had a wonderful time!
