The Ackworth 74 Club Annual General Meeting On Tuesday March 12th at 7.30 pm in the Methodist Church Schoolroom Ackworth, the 74 Club held it’s 45th Annual General Meeting. Of the 52 Members on roll 43 Members were present, which must be something of a record for an AGM! Apologies were received from 9 Members and we welcomed 5 new Members with only one resignation. Minutes of the Meeting held on March 14th last year were read and approved. The Club had had another very successful year. In her report, Anne Morgan, President outlined the many varied activities the Members had enjoyed throughout the past year, highlighting some of the particularly interesting and successful events. Fund raising for the YAA and Hearing Dogs for the Deaf and enjoying a day out in Harrogate followed by a visit to Ripley Castle. Club Treasurer, Hilary Hinchcliffe had resigned last October to be replaced by her deputy Elaine Attwood, who gave the Treasurer’s Report declaring the Club to be in a sound financial position. An interesting Programme of Events has been planned for the forthcoming year which will include talks by speakers on a wide variety of subjects and a visit to Lincoln, where Members will be free to explore. Election of Officers. There being only one nomination for the posts of President, Secretary and Treasurer, Anne Morgan, Sue Smith-Wilkins and Elaine Attwood were duly proposed, seconded and appointed to the posts of President, Secretary and Treasurer respectively. There also being only one nomination for each of the 5 Committee posts the following 4 existing Committee Members were duly reappointed, Jayne Cooper, Lynn Lloyd, Brenda Lee and Maggi Paylor. Sue Sidwell was also appointed to the last post on the Committee having agreed to be co-opted last year after Hilary’s resignation. After the Meeting the Members enjoyed a Faith Supper, food having been donated by the Members themselves. There was also a Bring and Buy Sale which raised £33 for Club funds. If you would like to know more about the Ackworth 74 Club, call Sue on 615608 for more information.

Your Community News Anyone for Croquet ? When English Heritage took over Brodsworth Hall, more than twenty years ago, the Croquet Association asked whether they could set up a Croquet Club. Sheila Lines, recently retired Physical Education lecturer at Lady Mabel College at Wentworth Woodhouse and Carolyn Walker, also a PE lecturer, took on the task although they knew nothing about croquet. They visited many croquet clubs and decided Golf Croquet was an easier game for beginners, who could progress to Association Croquet if they wished. The gardens were overgrown, so the lawns had to be gradually restored to a suitable length, hoops and mallets were acquired, a rule book was written and a meeting at St Mary’s Church Hall was advertised for prospective players. A few people turned up and slowly the club grew. Since then Brodsworth Hall has been conserved and the gardens have been restored to their Victorian glory, now winning many awards. The club enjoys playing in the beautiful surroundings most days when the Hall is open. Original club rules state that whites must be worn and this tradition is continued to enhance the atmosphere. Visitors enjoy the unique experience of watching the games, most people’s knowledge of croquet is from Alice in Wonderland, and so we are always willing to explain how we play. It is a game of skill and tactics, not just hitting balls through hoops. The aim is to get your ball through the hoop before your opponents, while preventing them by blocking or hitting away their balls.

1st Ackworth Cubs and Scouts
1st Ackworth Cubs and Scouts recently enjoyed a week end away at Woolley Scout Campsite. They were blessed with some fine weather. Friday evening after settling in they were sent on a mission in the dark woods to try to locate mysterious glowing objects. Later that evening the Cubs began the task of producing a carved soapstone egg. The evening rounded off with board games, hot dogs, buns and hot chocolate. Saturday morning saw a very early start! After a hearty breakfast which included a Cub favourite, pancakes, the Cubs set off to build shelters, whilst the Scouts tried their hand at firelighting. Being free to go off and play safely in the woods was a big attraction to both Cubs and Scouts - a freedom not often enjoyed at home. After lunch there was a packed afternoon of activities, air rifle shooting, axe throwing and bouldering on a cliff face. The axe throwing, being new to most of the Cubs and Scouts, proved to be the most popular of the afternoon’s activities. On a quieter note after all these ‘strenuous’ activities, one of our Cub parents who is a Paramedic, instructed them on the requirements of the Emergency Aid Stage 2 Badge. This covers the importance of knowing when and how to get help, how to assess and reassure someone at the scene of an emergency, and know how to help someone who is unconscious, bleeding, suffering burns or is having an asthma attack. The Cubs were tested on the Sunday and all passed. Before dinner the Cubs worked on their soapstone eggs again, whilst the Scouts collected wood for the evening campfire. After dinner the Cubs played a Wide Game that had been organised by the Scouts. This was followed by a traditional campfire in which the Cubs and Scouts participated. After supper, an earlier night was enjoyed by all after such a full day on little sleep!! Sunday morning and a 3 course cooked breakfast was followed by a Scout’s Own. The Cubs went tree climbing and played hide and seek in the woods whilst the Scouts went on a hike to the Sculpture park and took part in a treasure hunt style game. The Cubs went on a shorter walk to Woolley village and enjoyed some time in the play area there. After lunch the Cubs learned how to use a compass to walk a triangulation course. This can prove to be a difficult activity. Have you ever tried it? After the Scouts returned it was time to tidy up and depart for home, tired but happy after another successful ‘Scouting Adventure’. Our Cub section is expanding fast, but we are very short of leaders. Do you think you may be able to help out on Tuesday evenings? No previous experience is necessary as we give, ‘on the job training’. CRB checks are routinely required. For more information contact 01977 611225.
