Welcome to the April issue of The Ackworth Arrow.
Congratulations to everyone who took part in the Ackworth Beer Fest, held at Ackworth Community Centre in March. You helped to raise £4,024.00 in aid of the Rory James Embling Foundation at Cardiac Risk in the Young. A date has been set for screening locals on 26th May at Rory’s return, 1 Fothergll Ave in Ackworth. More details will be provided in the May issue of the Arrow. Well done everyone. The clocks spring forward on Sunday 25th March. I am sure you will agree, the lighter, warmer evenings are something to really look forward to! I wish everyone a very Happy Easter, let’s hope for some sunshine. The deadline for the May issue will be Wednesday 18th April. The May Arrow will be delivered by the last weekend in April.

COMMUNITY NEWS KNIT IN FOR THE TOUR DE YORKSHIRE Community spirited residents of Ackworth are gearing up for a visit from the Tour de Yorkshire on the 4th of May, ensuring that the riders, teams, organisers and media receive a warm welcome. Local craft group, Needles and Pins, are inviting anyone who can knit, crochet and sew to make bunting to decorate the village for the day of the race. Free workshops will be held at the Bell Lane Community Centre from 10 am until 4pm on the 7th, 21st and 28th April. Beginners of all ages are welcome and tuition will be given by experienced crafters. If you have a different craft or would just like to get involved, come along and see how you can help. The project has been supported by Ackworth Parish Council and King Cole Yarns, Skipton who have donated Knitting needles, how to knit sheets and yarn. These will specifically be used to get young people knitting. Free knitting and crochet patterns are available with blue and yellow yarn on offer for a donation of £1 a ball. All profits from the sale of yarn will go to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance which is the official Tour de Yorkshire Charity. If you cannot attend one of the workshops then free patterns, yarn and sewing kits are available from Ackworth Parish Council offices in the Community Centre on Bell Lane Ackworth, Monday to Friday (office hours) or you can use your own pattern and materials. For further details regarding the project and how to get involved contact the Parish Council office on 01977 611583 or for more information see the Ackworth Needles and Pins Facebook page.
New Seats for Ackworth’s Dando Way! New seats which will bring much pleasure to dog walkers and other villagers strolling along the Dando Way this coming year. Somewhere to rest, stop for a chat, or just a place to spend some “time out” contemplating the view. District Councillors, with support from the Parish Council have been, over the last year or so, making improvements to Dando Way and this work is currently on going. Foliage has been cut back, the path re-surfaced from the bridge near the Angel up to the Country Park. Also funding was secured for the 2 new street lights now on Dando Way, one next to Hardaker Lane. However, one of the latest improvements to the Dando Way is the 3 new wooden benches, one to replace the existing Memorial Bench near the Angel, which had collapsed. The Parish Council have kindly arranged for a new plaque to go on this bench. A 2nd new bench is further up and the 3rd new bench on Dando Way is further along towards the Woodhall Drive area, it is located at the bottom of the hill on the way towards the Bell Lane Car Park. The street lights have been funded by District Councillors’ capital grant money and the 3 benches have been funded by District Councillors’ Neighbourhood Improvement Schemes. This work and similar projects have been undertaken by the District Councillors and Ackworth Parish Council has supported these improvements. Both District and Parish Councils are currently working on further improvements in the area.

COMMUNITY NEWS New Priest-in-Charge for Ackworth! On Tuesday February 13th the Bishop of Wakefield was in Ackworth for the licensing of Rev’d Charlene Smith as new Priest in Charge of the Parish of St Cuthbert’s and All Saints’. I believe that, in the best possible way, Rev’d Charlene will prove to be very different from what most Ackworth residents might have been expecting. Rev’d Charlene is a petite, attractive, thirty something lady, charming and vivacious, full of enthusiasm and commitment for her relatively unique “calling” Her route to the Priesthood has been varied, interesting and different to that travelled by many of her colleagues. Rev’d Charlene was born and brought up in Castleford in a, not particularly religious, home. After completing her education Charlene went to work for the world famous clothing manufacturer Burberry’s in their fashion buying department. Later, she moved to a firm in Leeds specialising in scientifically designed and engineered sportswear for international athletes and uniforms for the English Cricket team and specialist air crew, in particular, Officers of the Queen’s Flight. Charlene met and married husband Christopher in 1995. Chris came from a Christian home and religion began to feature more in her daily life. Whilst pregnant with her first child, Charlene sort baptism for herself and her, soon to be born son, Owen. It was whilst Owen, a tiny baby, was seriously ill that Charlene found prayer a wonderful help and support. Then, much later after her son’s safe and full recovery, Charlene felt the call to become a priest and after some years of thought and discernment, she decided to apply to the College of the Resurrection in Mirfield to train as a priest. This was a full time course and in 2011 involved Charlene and her family moving on to the College Campus in Mirfield. In 2014 Charlene was ordained as a Priest and moved to Meltham to take up the post of Curate. Rev’d Charlene spent three very happy years ministering to the people of Meltham and was sad to leave but ready for new challenges. Rev’d Charlene then applied for the post as Priest in Charge of Ackworth, a living made available by the retirement of Rev’d Paul Hartley who had served the village loyally and well for almost 20n years She was successful in her application, now she and her family are living in the Rectory and her ministry, here in Ackworth has begun. Rev’d Charlene is keen to be involved, not just in the Church itself but in the wider community beyond the Church walls. Already busy making contacts, Rev’d Charlene has met Parish Councillors in her efforts to extend the work of the church to support in particular the vulnerable, the elderly and young people in our Community. She looks forward to being closely involved with the already planned programme, developing and reordering of All Saints’ Church to enable the building to be a more flexible space for community use. Rev’d Charlene is very conscientious, keen to listen, to identify needs and begin to meet the challenges of her new role. She will soon become a familiar figure in the village and will, I am sure, bring her own special qualities to enable her to do her best to meet the needs of, not only her Parishioners but everyone in the Community of Ackworth who, I am sure, are indeed fortunate to have secured her services for the foreseeable future. The Ackworth 74 Club Annual General Meeting
The 74 Club held it’s 44th Annual General Meeting on 13th March. Members attending 42 out of a total membership of 52. Apologies were received from a further 7 Members and the Club was pleased to welcome 1 new Member. Last years minutes were read and approved. The Club had had another very successful year. The President’s Report, read by Committee Member Anne Morgan, gave a detailed account of the Club’s activities throughout the previous year. This had included a very successful, if somewhat wet but enjoyable visit to Newby Hall. The Treasurer, Hilary Hinchcliffe reported that although costs had increased the Club was still in a sound financial position. Membership fees are to be held for a further year at just £10 for the year, with Members joining mid year paying £5. The Club started the previous year with 57 Members on role but this has since dropped to 52. An interesting Programme of Events has been planned for the forthcoming year which will include a visit to Ripley Castle and Gardens and Speakers on a wide variety of subjects.
