Welcome to the April issue of The Ackworth Arrow

With the latest news on the Coronavirus changing daily, I would like to advise everyone to check any events, meetings and church services you would normally attend to see if they are still going ahead. Also, to follow the advice of Public Health England and the NHS. There is a centre page pull-out in this month’s Arrow which advises readers of a community support initiative to help anyone who may be self isolating or in need of support. The website address for Public Health England and the NHS is there too. Please check these sources for information to make sure you follow the correct advice. There is a lot of incorrect information about. This issue can also be viewed online via our website, address below. The deadline for the May issue is Wednesday 15th April The May issue will be distributed the weekend beginning 24th April all being well. Keep safe, well informed and check on your neighbours if you can.

Your Community News Ackworth Artwork— Check this event is on in advance. 2020 sees the 5th Made in Ackworth Artwalk get underway on May 16th. We’ve even more makers in our midst this year and, as you know by now, we aren’t full of the usual art and crafts you might see at other events. You can expect handmade, good quality work as standard but also quirky, diverse and unusual materials being used. There are 4 workshops/open studios to explore around our beautiful village and demonstrations at our local florists together with 9 makers in the community centre. Our fabulous tombola has every penny raised going towards 4 year old Oliver Stephenson suffering from Neuroblastoma so if you can give more than the price of a ticket please do! Don’t forget to ask about classes, vouchers and commissions so you can have a go, treat someone or have something made to exactly fit your individual space and needs. Meet the makers, support small businesses and pick up diverse, unique, practical, handmade pieces of art and craft to keep yourselves, give as prezzies... or ...just make you smile. Keep an eye out for flyers in local outlets and at Wakefield One and like our face book page @madeinackworth.

The UK has well-established plans to deal with outbreaks of infectious disease and everyone can play an important role in making these plans work, slowing down the spread of coronavirus. We try to slow the spread of coronavirus for a number of important reasons: Firstly, we are still learning about COVID19. At the moment we believe that the majority of people who get the disease will experience a mild illness, but because this is a new virus we Public Health England, approved advice as of 16th March 2020. are not complacent, and our scientists will continue to learn from evidence emerging both here and internationally. Secondly, though we believe most people will have a mild illness, some older people or people with pre-existing health conditions will experience severe illness and we need to protect them. Finally, trying to slow an outbreak so everyone isn’t sick at once is an important way to manage pressure on health services and prevent widespread staff sickness absence in our public services and businesses. There some simple and effective actions everyone can take to protect themselves and their wider community:  Wash your hands before and after eating, using the toilet, preparing food and every time you return home for at least 20 seconds with warm water and soap.  Catch sneezes and coughs in a tissue, always carry tissues, bin them as soon as possible and wash your hands. Use your arm if you have no tissue.  If you suffer from a new persistent cough or high temperature, you and those you live with must self isolate for 14 days at home. Try to remain separate from others at home, eat separately and be the last person to use the bathroom, cleaning fully afterwards. You may exercise outside but keep away from other people.  Encourage social distancing, work from home where possible, avoid public transport, pubs, clubs, restaurants, theatre etc.  Have a plan of support for those around you in case anyone you know needs to self isolate, look after your neighbours and older members of your family with shopping etc.  If you start to experience symptoms and believe you could have coronavirus, do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital as you could pass the infection to others. Visit NHS UK's coronavirus (COVID-19) pageadvice.  Contact NHS 111your symptoms are getting worse.  The UK coronavirus (COVID-19) pagekeep you in touch with how the Government is responding.  The NHS coronavirus (COVID-19)includes a wide range of health-related information.  Follow Public Health England The Department of Health and Social CareTwitter for regular updates.

Coronavirus Covid – 19

Support in our Village Provided by our Community As we are all aware, the coronavirus is spreading among us and the government is issuing guidance to slow the infection rate and alleviate the pressure on the NHS. The most up to date advice can be found on the following websites

www.gov.uk/government/organisations/public-health-england www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19 In Ackworth, through Michelle’s work in the Ackworth Arrow, and through our churches, we have collated a list of volunteers within our community who are willing to provide help with shopping and errands for the elderly, or those needing to isolate, if they have no other support. Many more people are wanting to volunteer so, in partnership with Ackworth Parish Council and Ackworth School, we have set up a coordinating team to match up volunteers with people needing help. You will be able to find details of this on local Facebook groups. These volunteers are not replacing the work of the NHS, or Social Care, they are simply residents willing to carry out neighbourly duties and helping where they can. The most important thing is to keep yourself safe and consider the safety of others. The volunteers WILL NOT need to enter your property and will only knock on your door if the have requested help. You will know in advance the name of the person who will assist you.

If you feel you need this assistance please phone: Ackworth School Reception Tel: 01977 233600 between 8:30am and 4:30pm The person answering will take some basic details from you, and pass those details on to a coordinator, who will then contact one of the volunteers to make contact with you. This is not an emergency service, but requests will be dealt with in a timely manner, and will be reviewed regularly.

WANT TO OFFER YOUR SUPPORT? If anyone would like to join the list of volunteers please contact Rev Paul Fox via email:

revpaul.fox@gmail.com

We need your name, address, whether you drive, email address and confirmation you are happy to share your contact details for the purpose of this community initiative.

Thank you Please keep up to date with current advice so that you can keep yourself and others safe.

A Greater Challenge A couple of weeks ago I hosted an evening to celebrate Italian Food as part of my challenges for the year, and to raise money for Cancer Research UK. On the night 20 of our neighbours were able to join us and share lots of food, including, porcini arancini, Focaccia bread, pizza, pasta, gnocchi, chicken saltimbocca, salmon with caponata, fennel salad, tiramisu, pannacotta, shortbread biscuits, and of course a variety of beverages, including limoncello and prosecco. It was a fantastic get together of our neighbours, which in the end raised £205! A fantastic amount. So, a massive thank you to everyone who donated. However, everyone commented on something else, because there developed a fantastic opportunity for us to spend time together, and chat with each for several hours. This is something we don’t often do and several conversations took place about doing this kind of thing more often. Of course we are now in a completely different place socially, across the country, and across the world. And we are unlikely to be able to gather like this again for some time due to the coronavirus crisis, and the advice and measures being put in place by the government. So here is a challenge that I would rather not have to face.

But the thing I am hanging on to, is that sense of community. I have long since held the belief that community is something we are designed to be part of. I don’t believe we were created to live by ourselves, but alongside others. Our neighbours. And it seems that now, more than ever, our community is going to be a very important part of our lives over the coming months. I know that Michelle Sidebottom, editing this and other publications has been working hard across different communities, to facilitate community support for those who might request it. And there are others within our community who are stepping up to a similar task. I know that there are many people within our community who are willing to provide neighbourly support for those around them, and I am certain that our community will be all the stronger for it. All of the churches in Ackworth are preparing themselves to face this, and our church leaders are in regular contact with each other. Also a small group have formulated a plan whereby anyone who has a need can contact someone for help. Please see the article about Coronavirus for details on p9. This is a situation none of us would want to be in. But it is where we are, and we will all have to face it, but doing it together, and supporting one another, will make it a little easier to bear. Keep up to date. And keep safe. Rev Paul

1St Ackworth Cubs

Just keeping everyone up to date with what the Cubs have been up to. It has been a busy three months since Christmas. The Cub section welcomed 4 new Beavers into the Cubs, all settled in well and were recently invested. Safety is always at the forefront of every parents mind and the section has been working towards their ‘Personal safety’ badge. Cubs learned about the dangers involved in playing on or near railway lines, building sites and near rivers and quarries. They learned the Water Safety code and how it applied to them. They found out what to do if a stranger approached and started talking to them, and how to stay safe online. They had to memorise their telephone number and address, and also how they could contact Childline. Even some of the games they played fitted in with the theme, such as Lifeline throwing to save someone from a pond or frozen ice. As part of their Skills Award the Cubs made apple crumbles, which were taken home to be enjoyed by their families. (No cases of food poisoning were reported!!!) The Christian festival of Lent fast approached and the Cubs enjoyed making and tossing their own pancakes and playing Shrove Tuesday games. They learned all about Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent. The group held a display of some of the groups activities at Ackworth Co op. The Co op has chosen the group as one of its Community charities this year. If you are a member please change your preference vote to us as we are needing new camping equipment. All sections are busy preparing for the first outdoor camp of the year celebrating St.George’s Day. The camp is to be held at Hesley Wood campsite near Sheffield. The Cub section is in desperate need of another leader. Could you find time on Tuesdays to help us out? Cubs meet every Tuesday in term time. If so get in touch with the Cub Scout Leader on 01977 611225.
