Editors Letter... Back to school, back to work what else can I say about September! I don't know about you but I had a fantastic August watching the Olympics on TV. Didn't Team GB do well? For all of you who had tickets for events I bet you had a fabulous time. I tired my hardest to get tickets but failed miserably and I was so annoyed at all the empty seats at the events. The main event in September is the charity evening at Forest Pines Hotel, Brigg. Money raised will be for Alexander Strong a local boy! All details are on The front cover. Please support this event. Please keep sending in your articles especially if you have any events for charity. Once again I would like to thank all my advertisers and all the people who delivery the Arrow. You are all doing a great job come rain or shine! If anyone is interested in delivering the Arrow please email me your details.

The deadline for September issue is Wednesday 15th August.

“Pets As Therapy” was the subject of the August meeting of Epworth Ladies Society. Wanda Sooby a volunteer for the charity gave a demonstration along with 2 of her “PAT” trained dogs to show how they assist in giving comfort and assistance to people in varying situations. Wanda gave an informative talk about the charity and how the “PAT” animals visit hospitals and care homes. She also told us about a new incentive where they are hoping to visit schools and help children who may have a fear of animals or are struggling to learn to read. Research has shown that a child may read to a dog quite happily but not be able to conquer their fear to read to other people. Their website is http://www.petsastherapy.org/

The next meeting is on 6th September and will be a social evening with the chance to chat and discuss ideas for next years calendar. The Epworth Ladies Society meet at The Old School Inn Epworth on the First Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. Contact Rosemary Taylor on 01427 873368

News, News, News, News, News, News, News ... Members of the Epworth Men’s Society along with their wives or girlfriends – they were advised not to bring both – had a conducted tour of Gainsborough’s Old Hall on Sunday (July 29). They were shown around the Old Hall by a knowledgeable guide dressed in 15th centaury period costume. He explained that although many people thought the hall was Tudor it was in fact medieval, having been built for Lord and Lady Thomas Burgh between 1460 and 1480. An explanation of the customs and practices of the era was given to the party along with a detailed account of the food and drink that would have been consumed at the time. The guide explained that people did not drink water, because it would make them ill. Instead various strengths of beer were consumed. “Although they did not know why, the beer brewing process – involving the boiling of the water used – would kill off all germs to be found. For the same reason, much of the meat consumed at the time would also have been boiled,” explained the guide. They were also informed about a ghost that is alleged to haunt an upper corridor. It seems that a daughter of a subsequent owner fell in love with a soldier but was forbidden to marry him because he was of a much lower class. She took to her room and died there. The so called ‘gray lady’ would be seen walking along a corridor and going through a solid wall into a room. It was only when refurbishment was taking place that a doorway was found where the ‘gray lady’ would enter the room. Following the tour the party returned to the coach they had hired and went to the Cross Keys at Stow for Sunday lunch before returning to the Isle The next event on the Men’s Society programme will be in October, when the first event in its 55th annual programme will commence with the organisation’s annual dinner, which is to be held at Belton Playing Field Hall. Anyone wanting further information on the Men’s Society is asked to call Ken Bickerstaff on (01427) 872288.

A popular North Lincolnshire tourist attraction – built in 1709 – has catapulted itself into the 21st century with a re-launch of its website that now includes a DVD on its history. It is Epworth’s Old Rectory, famous throughout the world as the childhood home of two men – John and Charles Wesley - who founded a movement that went on to become the worldwide Methodist Church. “We’ve plans to restore the house to the way it would have looked when inhabited by the Wesleys,” said Rev Claire Potter, curator at the Old Rectory, which is a Grade 1 listed building. “We’re using the website and DVD to promote the Old Rectory, its history and the development project we have in hand for its restoration,” she added. This involves restoring the Old Rectory to its form in about 1716, when the Wesleys lived there. It will be achieved through period rooms, with authentic floors, wall finishes, fireplaces and furnishings to transport visitors back some 300 years. The ambitious project, involving much research, will involve rooms being furnished as they might then have been and, in addition, there will be more interactive displays, including real fires burning in the revealed inglenook fireplaces. The main features of the refurbishment involve the installation of a lift and the removal of all 20th century furnishings and modern walls to restore the early 18th century features The website and DVD can be found at epwortholdrectory.org.uk

News, News, News... Ladies who Lunch - Barry Johnston, a very humorous and personable man, was the last speaker of the session at the Scunthorpe & District Ladies’ Luncheon Club. It was quite a momentous occasion for some because they could remember when his father, Brian Johnston, ( Jonners) was the speaker at the club in 1969. After a delicious lunch served by the staff of the Wortley House Hotel, the members listened with pleasure and amusement to his talk as he told of his father’s career and exploits. They were also quick to buy his books afterwards. The next session of the luncheon club will begin in September with another programme of excellent speakers lined up. Every second Wednesday in the month, the members gather, some arriving in time for coffee beforehand, to meet friends, chat and enjoy a delicious lunch and then relax whilst being entertained by the day’s speaker. Amongst the speakers for the coming session are Rosa and Bill Tidy, (cartoonist), Judy Theobold, Journalist, John Pilkington, adventurer and photographer extraordinaire and Libby Morris, entertainer. Lunch is served at 12.30pm. Anyone wishing to join should contact Mrs. Jayne Watson on 01724 720071.

The Epworth Mowbray Players No.4 by Anthony Catherall

Gertrude Lees the producer and all the players were very excited by the huge response and audience size after Pride and Prejudice. Already some of the cast were showing the latent talent they had for acting. Miss Marjorie Trimingham had been encouraged by Ella Dempster to get involved. For Marjorie an Infant School Teacher, performing on a stage was going to be quite different from standing up in front of a class of pupils. But Ella had urged her to join her and she quickly established herself by playing Lady Lucas in Pride of Prejudice. Sixty years later she was to tell me, that this period was the happiest time of her long life. Ella Dempster meanwhile loved playing comedy roles and had a natural gift for the art. Indeed she was to be in more performances than anyone else, twelve in total. Both of them were cast in “Quiet Weekend” a three act play by Esther McCracken, Marjorie as Marcia Brent (the Royd’s married daughter) and Ella as Bella Hitchins ( maid for the Royds for years). December 5th, 6th 7th and 8th 1951 were the dates for this their fourth production. More and more helpers came forward including: ‘Effects by Stage Properties Ltd., London’, and ‘Mr C.W. Fields Epworth for the loan of timber’. One shouldn’t forget the backstage contributions at this time including, Morris Butler Associate producer, Alfred W. Newton Stage Manager, E. Donald Sykes- Godfrey Archer- and Harry Dempster, Assistant Stage Managers, Alan Matthews Chief Electrician, Derek Camp Stage Carpenter, Miss Audrey Till prompter, G. Haddon Archer Treasurer and Business Manager, Harry T. Shipley Hon. Secretary.

Now & Then - Then & Now No 41 - by Anthony Catherall This month and every month see Epworth or Belton in bygone days and compare to today's images !

The Stocks Hill area of Belton, circa 1914- 1920. The above being a postcard from Doncaster photographer Edgar Leonard Scrivens (1883-1950) who was active between 1909-1930. Scrivens (E.L.S.) was a prolific Doncaster photographer and usually worked within a 40-mile radius of the town. Scrivens first office was in Cooper Street Doncaster then moving to larger Queens Road premises. Amazingly when he died in 1950 all his stock of wonderful negatives were thrown out from Queens Road, but fortunately his vast collection of postcards survived. Close to and just to right of colour picture below is the Grade 1 listed, Anglican Church of All Saints. Belton has many other listed buildings perhaps 27 in total (including the Church farmhouse, barn and stable/granary ranges closeby) that can be seen today on a walk around the area. Below left is an old 1914 photograph of Belton Fair taken from approximately the same location, this time though the camera directed towards the main road now the A161, courtesy of Local Historian Mig Miller of Belton.

Grant Awarded to Epworth War Memorial Field Pavilion Fundraisers for the pavilion have been successful in securing funding to modernise the facilities for the future. Fundraisers from the War Memorial Field Committee have successfully acquired funding to modernise the hall providing new windows, doors, floors, central heating system, ceiling, kitchen and toilet facilities. Epworth Town Council donated £3,000 towards the project to allow us to be able to access funding pots. Work is due to commence in August and will provide a complete refurbishment of the hall. The funding is being made available through the Northern Lincolnshire RDPE LEADER Programme (Rural Development Programme for England) which is jointly funded by Defra and the European Union with match funding from WREN. The hall is used on a daily basis for various clubs and groups including zumba, art groups, the Rural Day Centre and various dance groups and has always maintained its principles of low rental costs in order to allow as many people to benefit from the facilities as possible. The hall was ready for modernisation and many users had commented on the possibility of providing up to date facilities. Following a consultation with hall users some committee members put forward a grant application to Leader and Wren and successfully secured £38,078 and £29,818, respectively. Speaking for the Committee, Carys McMahon and Gillian Bacon said "Having this funding will allow us to fully modernise the hall, making it more energy efficient and a pleasure to use." We applied to the LEADER Programme after reading an article in the North Lincs Council magazine and found information through the North Lincs website.

I would like to thank everyone who attended and gave so generously at the Coffee Morning in aid of the Alzheimer's Society on the 11th August at the Haxey Memorial Hall. I am so pleased that the coffee morning together with donations raised an amazing ÂŁ2064.00, half of which will go to research and the other half to help present day sufferers and carers. I am very grateful to all the local businesses who have supported me by giving so generously, I am sure this helped towards the success of the coffee morning. A big thank you to all my friends who helped with the planning and worked so hard on the day, raising this amount has made it so worth while. Regards Gill Snow

TRENTSIDE FEDERATION SCHOOL NEWS What a busy end of term we had at both St Martin’s and West Butterwick Primary Schools. In addition to the usual end of term events such as Sports Afternoon and the residential educational visit to PGL Centre at Caythorpe Court near Grantham, we had an interesing visitor-experience at St Martin’s – Mr Terry Oliver – a local gentleman who had found an intriguing message in a bottle whilst conducting his river conservation work around Amcotts. This message in a bottle turned out to be from St Martin’s pupils in Class 3 from 2006! The children had been working on the topic ‘Shipwrecked’ and had received permission to send off this bottled message in the River Trent, all that time ago. For 6 years it had been in the River Trent – luckily, finally discovered by Mr Oliver who then carefully opened the bottle, Alfie Temperton trophy winner at unfurled the card inside to read the message. Mr Oliver St Martin's Sports promptly contacted the school and was invited in to share his ‘treasure of the Trent’! We were lucky enough to also be able to invite Miss Czaplinski back to school – she was the Class 3 teacher back in 2006. We were all delighted to see the bottle and its contents, as well as learning about River Conservation and water safety from Mr Oliver. So, all in all, it was a very worthwhile visit. At our end of term Leavers’ Services, both schools were very pleased to have Ben Parkinson involved in presenting various trophies. The children and staff are definitely inspired by all of Ben’s achievements and his motto ‘always a little further’. St Martin’s trophies presented were Music ; Ruby Naylor-Adamson, Maths ; Sam Hattersley, Literacy ; Lois Matthews, Service to the School ; Ellie Watts, Ben Parkinson award ; Tiffany Frost. Achievement awards were presented to ; Ryan Trewick, Ruby Smith, Kate Foreman, Harry Watts, Abbie Garner, Lauren Lindley and Jimmy Smith. West Butterwick trophies presented were – Stephen Dawson Achievement Trophy ; Charlie Hobson, Sportsmanship ; Ryan Richardson, Pupils’ Pupil ; Amy Harris-Kendrick and Ryan Richardson, Service to the School ; Holly Willerton, St Mary’s Award ; Jacob Pearson. As a special treat this year, Mr McLeod led the five West Butterwick Leavers up to see the bell of St Mary’s and also gave a brief history of the bell and clock. The children were on the look -out for vampire bats in the belfry, but I am pleased to say none were spotted! We also said a fond farewell to three teachers – Mr Green, Miss Foreman and Miss Dance who we presented with various gifts and good wishes for their new and exciting career developments. Hopefully, everyone will now have a relaxing Summer break, refreshed for the new academic year in September! Mrs Josephine Buckle, Headteacher, St Martin’s and West Butterwick Church of England Primary Schools – the Trentside Federation Mr Terry Oliver with Miss Ramona Czaplinski and three pupils

Holiday Work My youngest son has been home on ‘vacation’ from University for several weeks. He has a number of text books on his desk from the University library recommended for holiday reading in preparation for his second year. Being the caring father I am, I asked him how his study was going. So far, he has read the first page of the first book. When I enquired further, he reminded me that there was the European Football Cup followed by Wimbledon, with Cricket Test Match highlights to watch in between. Now he’s into the Olympics after a few days real holiday with his brothers and Granny. He’s very quick to point out that I have enjoyed his company in front of the TV more than usual! Isn’t it easy to get distracted? I am sure that when my son has read all his books before going back to University, he will say his days of armchair sport was time well spent. (To be fair, he goes on marathon bicycle rides regularly). Whatever is on the box, whether it happens every four years or more often, I need to make sure I don’t get too distracted by gold medals on earth but rather concentrate on He who gives out gold medals in heaven. In the Olympic Games that we have witnessed, identity has become a key issue. This was not the intention of the founders of the modern Olympics, but now a days the medal table has become a regular feature of the reports. This year whether Great Britain would hold its fourth place, or gain a third, or to demonstrate the struggle between China and the U.S.A. This identity of course reflects the nationality of the athletes themselves. For most this is obvious and not contentious, but for some others it is controversial. A number of the G.B. athletes were born in another country, most particularly Mo Farah, who was born in Somali. He was asked whether he had ever wanted to run for Somali, for which he would have been eligible, and he replied “This is my country now.” Those who are critical of this cross country transfer of nationality refer derisively to “plastic Britains.” This implies that their nationality is not authentic. However in the reply of Mo Farah, and in the support and enthusiasm for him there can be no doubt of his identity today. As Christian people we rejoice in the identity we have both in our nationality, but also in that identity which comes from our faith and call in Jesus Christ which crosses all countries and nationhood.

It has been a very busy summer down on the farm, Kids at Coneygarth Holiday Club is very popular due to the facilities we have and the quality and range of activities we offer. We have three acres of secure woodland where many of these activities take place, we also have lots of themed days eg Cowboy and Indians, Pirates, Harry Potter, Dr Who etc. All meals and snacks are provided; we specialise in giving the children home cooked food. The Holiday club is available to all children of primary school age. If required transport can be provided from the Finningley area. The Olympics has been a great source of entertainment this summer, in the large grassy play area an arena was created with a marked out Olympic track, where children could emulate Jess Ennis, Mo Farrow, etc. All the children have taken part and enjoyed receiving a gold medal for their participation. Both nurseries have spaces for 0-5 year olds, please remember the preschool children are entitled to 15 hours free flexible funding which can be used on its own or in conjunction with paid hours. Like schools we cover the Early Years Foundation stage curriculum delivering personal, social and emotional development, communication and language, literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts & design. Please feel free to visit either nursery to view the facilities and see what we have to offer.

Did you know.....Dog Awareness Week is 16th - 23rd September 2012 Following on from the Balanced Intelligent Dog Training campaign last year, the Guild of Dog Trainers is going to be running a Dog Awareness Week on the 16th - 23rd September. Expanding upon the principles of the campaign, each day will cover a new topic for educating the dog owning general public via articles issued nationally and locally. Running in conjunction with the Canine and Feline Behaviour Association's Child and Dog Safety week, between the two organisations, we plan to have a lot of interest in the press; we have a spread in Dogs Monthly September issue as well as a follow on spread two months later showing the impact the week has had, including photos of the events. Monday – the emphasis is on... G - Good dog owners are responsible dog owners What makes a responsible owner? Walking, feeding, companionship, consideration to other dog owners (for example not praising dogs whilst owners are screaming at them to come back) and the community (poo picking, not letting dogs chase cyclists, joggers etc) Tuesday – the emphasis is on... U - Understand your dog: do your dog a favour and learn about what makes him tick Canine communication, the signals that we share and miss, body language, why dogs bite and how to avoid it by learning what your dog is trying to say – for example, the recent anchor woman bite. Wednesday – the emphasis is on... I - Intelligent balanced dog training: say no as well as yes, make training fun, have time together and time apart and most importantly enjoy your dog Different types of training available from trials and tracking to agility and flyball and simply having fun and ensuring that your dog is trained in order to enjoy life to the full. Thursday – the emphasis is on... L - Leadership: every relationship has someone that leads, the same is true for our relationship with our dog; that doesn’t mean being a bully or employing harsh handling, just applying a bit of common sense leadership skills within your relationship will keep your dog safe and happy. How little things can make a big difference in the relationship with your dog; what we call good manners around the home others are calling ‘life rewards’ a rose by any other name is still a rose... time to take some of the confusion around various terminologies that are bandied around and to add a bit of common sense. Friday – the emphasis is on... D - Do spend time to train your dog the basics: loose lead walking, sit, down, come and stay, and if you want to please your vet... stand. In the times of ‘no time’, not everyone can make a regular training class, however, we still need to teach the basics to our dogs... the GoDT will shortly make available on our website how to train these exercises in an exciting PDF to include a socialisation checklist.

Pictured in the photograph are members of a brand new singing group called the Isle Community Singers. They were formed just over 10 weeks ago and have received partnership support from St Norbert’s Catholic School, Crowle and North Lincolnshire Council. They are a community group and want to stress that they do not audition beforehand or single out any singers during the rehearsals, they just want to have fun and come together to make music enjoyable for everyone! They are looking to expand their membership, so if you can sing, if you want to sing or even if you feel like you can't sing then they are the singers for you! They rehearse every Wednesday evening (not including school holidays) at St Norbert's Primary School from 7.30-9.30pm and are directed by Hannah Doherty, a Music Graduate from York. They will be performing at various local venues in the forthcoming months. If you or anyone you know is interested in joining the Isle Community Singers then please don't hesitate to contact ; Gill Vickers on gill.vickers@northlincs.gov.uk 01724 297077or Pam Tonge, St Norbert's Catholic Primary School, Fieldside, Crowle, DN17 4HL Tel- 01724 710249.

The Apple of your Isle Do you have apples and pears in your garden that you don’t know what to do with? Are you fed up with making yet more apple pies or apple chutney? Well, a group of fruit growers in the Isle of Axholme has come up with a novel solution. Instead of all that fruit going to waste, they will give you a chance to turn your fruit into fruit juice – as well as offering a few tasty recipes. Called the Apple of Your Isle, the group will be launching their project at this year’s Festival of the Plough on Sunday 16th September. They will be showing you how easy it is to juice fruit using a scratter – a large mincer – and a fruit press. You will then be able to taste the product of the juice extraction process. Thereafter they will be running two Pressing Days in Crowle and Epworth on Saturdays 20 and 27 October. You will be able to take your fruit along at a pre-booked time and be shown how to press it into juice. You can then carry out the whole process yourself. And then the best part of all - you will be able to take away the juice and drink it at home. And all for a nominal fee. The exact locations for the Pressing Days have yet to be decided, but will be at places that give good access. Peter Barnard is one of the group leading the project and said “This project is concerned with conserving and perpetuating the heritage of fruit growing – especially apples and pears - and production in the Isle of Axholme. We encourage anyone with spare fruit to come to the Festival or bring it to one of the Pressing Days and see how easy it is to make a drink that is so superior to anything you can buy.” Please look out in the local papers for more details – including the locations and times or contact Peter Barnard on 01427 873937.

Driving on motorways in bad weather continued. Dear readers, Ice and Snow. Avoid driving in extremely wintry conditions, is any journey really worth the risk? Only in extreme cases are motorways affected by settling snow. Usually snowploughs and gritter lorries keep them clear. However, slip roads and hard shoulders don’t always get the same treatment, so take extra care. Also be aware that bridges are particularly susceptible to re-freezing and black ice. In sub-zero conditions drive at a safe speed, allow extra braking distance and make extra smooth steering and braking actions to avoid unsettling your vehicle. If you have to travel in extreme conditions, ensure you have plenty of fuel, take a shovel, spare warm clothes and other essential supplies like water to drink. In extreme winter conditions, drive as if you are walking on eggs! Stay in a high gear and don’t make any sudden inputs as these may cause a slide. The left-hand lane carries most traffic, so is likely to be the most clear of snow and ice. Stay there as much as possible. Do not put your wheels on, or try to drive through the lines of slush and ice that collect between lanes. Strong Winds. Cross winds and turbulence can severely unsettle your car and even change your direction of travel. Prepare for strong, unsettling winds when you drive on to a flyover or viaduct where protective embankments disappear. Driving past HGVs at speed has a similar effect. Be aware of the effects of strong winds on motorcycles and other vehicles like high-sided lorries, vans and caravans. Give them a wide birth, plan your overtake away from the high risk conditions and consider leaving the middle lane as a “buffer zone”. Take extra care when driving flat-sided vehicles like vans, people carriers and 4x4s. Grip the steering wheel firmly and be ready to counter the unsettling ‘deflection’ when you pass an HGV. When changing lanes in poor weather look extra carefully in your mirrors for vehicles travelling without lights on. As soon as conditions clear remember to turn off your fog lights. It’s an offence to leave them on in good visibility or at night when your headlights would be adequate. Avoid over-use of fog lights and driving lights. Their high-intensity beams may blind other road uses in clear conditions. Only use rear fog lights in extreme conditions as they can be dazzling and annoying. They might also mask the fact that your brake lights have come on. Be aware that fog lights may cancel when full-beam is used.
