Editors Letter... Back to school, back to work what else can I say about September! I don't

know about you but I had a fantastic August watching the Olympics on TV. Didn't Team GB do well? For all of you who had tickets for events I bet you had a fabulous time. I tired my hardest to get tickets but failed miserably and I was so annoyed at all the empty seats at the events. The main event in September is the charity evening at Forest Pines Hotel, Brigg. Money raised will be for Alexander Strong a local boy! All details are on page 36. Please support this event. I would like to say congratulations to Keith, owner of Shepherds Farm at Graizelound. I have been there a couple of times with my kids; it is a fabulous child friendly place. Keith is now taking bookings for birthday parties if you are interested give him a ring. Details and photos are on page 20. Please keep sending in your articles especially if you have any events for charity. Once again I would like to thank all my advertisers and all the people who delivery the Arrow. You are all doing a great job come rain or shine! If anyone is interested in delivering the Arrow please email me your details. The deadline for September issue is Wednesday 15th August.

I am very grateful to all the local businesses who have supported me by giving so generously, I am sure this helped towards the success of the coffee morning. A big thank you to all my friends who helped with the planning and worked so hard on the day, raising this amount has made it so worth while. Regards Gill Snow

The Apple of your Isle Do you have apples and pears in your garden that you don’t know what to do with? Are you fed up with making yet more apple pies or apple chutney? Well, a group of fruit growers in the Isle of Axholme has come up with a novel solution. Instead of all that fruit going to waste, they will give you a chance to turn your fruit into fruit juice – as well as offering a few tasty recipes. Called the Apple of Your Isle, the group will be launching their project at this year’s Festival of the Plough on Sunday 16th September. They will be showing you how easy it is to juice fruit using a scratter – a large mincer – and a fruit press. You will then be able to taste the product of the juice extraction process. Thereafter they will be running two Pressing Days in Crowle and Epworth on Saturdays 20 and 27 October. You will be able to take your fruit along at a pre-booked time and be shown how to press it into juice. You can then carry out the whole process yourself. And then the best part of all - you will be able to take away the juice and drink it at home. And all for a nominal fee. The exact locations for the Pressing Days have yet to be decided, but will be at places that give good access. Peter Barnard is one of the group leading the project and said “This project is concerned with conserving and perpetuating the heritage of fruit growing – especially apples and pears - and production in the Isle of Axholme. We encourage anyone with spare fruit to come to the Festival or bring it to one of the Pressing Days and see how easy it is to make a drink that is so superior to anything you can buy.” Please look out in the local papers for more details – including the locations and times - or contact Peter Barnard on 01427 873937.

Did you know.....Dog Awareness Week is 16th - 23rd September 2012 Following on from the Balanced Intelligent Dog Training campaign last year, the Guild of Dog Trainers is going to be running a Dog Awareness Week on the 16th - 23rd September. Expanding upon the principles of the campaign, each day will cover a new topic for educating the dog owning general public via articles issued nationally and locally. Running in conjunction with the Canine and Feline Behaviour Association's Child and Dog Safety week, between the two organisations, we plan to have a lot of interest in the press; we have a spread in Dogs Monthly September issue as well as a follow on spread two months later showing the impact the week has had, including photos of the events. Monday – the emphasis is on... G - Good dog owners are responsible dog owners What makes a responsible owner? Walking, feeding, companionship, consideration to other dog owners (for example not praising dogs whilst owners are screaming at them to come back) and the community (poo picking, not letting dogs chase cyclists, joggers etc) Tuesday – the emphasis is on... U - Understand your dog: do your dog a favour and learn about what makes him tick Canine communication, the signals that we share and miss, body language, why dogs bite and how to avoid it by learning what your dog is trying to say – for example, the recent anchor woman bite. Wednesday – the emphasis is on... I - Intelligent balanced dog training: say no as well as yes, make training fun, have time together and time apart and most importantly enjoy your dog Different types of training available from trials and tracking to agility and flyball and simply having fun and ensuring that your dog is trained in order to enjoy life to the full. Thursday – the emphasis is on... L - Leadership: every relationship has someone that leads, the same is true for our relationship with our dog; that doesn’t mean being a bully or employing harsh handling, just applying a bit of common sense leadership skills within your relationship will keep your dog safe and happy. How little things can make a big difference in the relationship with your dog; what we call good manners around the home others are calling ‘life rewards’ a rose by any other name is still a rose... time to take some of the confusion around various terminologies that are bandied around and to add a bit of common sense. Friday – the emphasis is on... D - Do spend time to train your dog the basics: loose lead walking, sit, down, come and stay, and if you want to please your vet... stand. In the times of ‘no time’, not everyone can make a regular training class, however, we still need to teach the basics to our dogs... the GoDT will shortly make available on our website how to train these exercises in an exciting PDF to include a socialisation checklist.

Haxey & Westwoodside Heritage Society Literary Award 2012 At the Haxey & Westwoodside Primary Schools Year 6 Annual Thanksgiving Service at St Nicholas Church Haxey, President Mrs Norma Neill and Mrs Jackie Starr Chairman, of the Heritage society, presented the tenth annual award of the society’s Literary Prize to the winning pupils of the two schools. The award encourages an interest in local heritage by the younger generation and is made to the Year 6 pupils who, as judged by the Society’s committee, submit the best narrative story. Haxey pupil, Hannah Young, wrote of a day in a pupil’s imaginary life today, 60 years years ago and 60 years ahead. Westwoodside pupil Maisie Simpson wrote of a child’s experience in acquiring an exciting new game, available in a local store. Mrs Neill thanked the Year 6 teachers for their continuing support of the award.

Haxey & Westwoodside Heritage Society Members Meeting June 2012 Opening the meeting of the Haxey & Westwoodside Heritage Society, Chairman Jackie Starr recalled the Society’s street party, which had been enjoyed by all members. Jackie then mentioned the forthcoming AGM as an opportunity for members to join the committee, as their experience and talents would be appreciated by the current committee. The previous evening literary award presentations were highlighted along with the fundraising activity at the recent Misterton Gala. Speaker for the evening with the Camera Club slide presentation “Villages of the Isle” was Mr George Fiddler. Welcoming Mr Fiddler the Chairman explained that the talk should have been a dual event with Mr John Roberts, but due to John’s sudden illness, Mr Fiddler would hold the fort alone. Opening what proved to be a lively presentation George explained that three things had influenced life in the Isle – Religion, Farming and the Drainage. He described the topography of the Isle, how it was bound by the rivers and canals and how the villages were distributed North and South and that tonight he would deal with the southern part of the Isle. Mr Fiddler discussed the various communities, Epworth, Haxey, Westwoodside, Low Burnham, West Butterwick and finally the Stockwith basin. Many of the historic buildings and customs were shown and discussed, with the use of many specially prepared composite colour slides. Giving the vote of thanks, Mrs Pam Johnson made special reference to the pronunciation of the local place names. The meeting then closed with refreshments served. Following the August holiday, the next meeting of the society would be at 7.30 pm on Thursday September 13 th with the welcome return of Mrs Sylvia Atkinson and her presentation 18 Please mention of ‘Reunited’. “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements .

The Epworth Mowbray Players No.4 by Anthony Catherall

Gertrude Lees the producer and all the players were very excited by the huge response and audience size after Pride and Prejudice. Already some of the cast were showing the latent talent they had for acting. Miss Marjorie Trimingham had been encouraged by Ella Dempster to get involved. For Marjorie an Infant School Teacher, performing on a stage was going to be quite different from standing up in front of a class of pupils. But Ella had urged her to join her and she quickly established herself by playing Lady Lucas in Pride of Prejudice. Sixty years later she was to tell me, that this period was the happiest time of her long life. Ella Dempster meanwhile loved playing comedy roles and had a natural gift for the art. Indeed she was to be in more performances than anyone else, twelve in total. Both of them were cast in “Quiet Weekend” a three act play by Esther McCracken, Marjorie as Marcia Brent (the Royd’s married daughter) and Ella as Bella Hitchins ( maid for the Royds for years). Queens Diamond Jubilee Mugs There are a limited amount of mugs left which were provided by the Parish Council to all school and nursery children as a memento from the Queens Diamond Jubilee. If you would like to purchase a mug for £5 please contact Cllr Pauline Booth on 01427 754450. Neighbourhood Plans The Localism Act, which received Royal Assent on November 15 2011, introduced new rights and powers to allow local communities to shape new development by coming together to prepare neighbourhood plans. Neighbourhood planning can be taken forward by two types of body - town and parish councils or 'neighbourhood forums'. Neighbourhood forums are community groups that are designated to take forward neighbourhood planning in areas without parishes. It is the role of the local planning authority to agree who should be the neighbourhood forum for the neighbourhood area. The criteria for establishing neighbourhood forums are being kept as simple as possible to encourage new and existing residents’ organisations, voluntary and community groups to put themselves forward. Neighbourhood forums and parish councils can use new neighbourhood planning powers to establish general planning policies for the development and use of land in a neighbourhood. These are described legally as 'neighbourhood development plans.' In an important change to the planning system communities can use neighbourhood planning to permit the development they want to see - in full or in outline – without the need for planning applications. These are called 'neighbourhood development orders.' Local councils will continue to produce development plans that will set the strategic context within which neighbourhood development plans will sit. Neighbourhood development plans or orders do not take effect unless there is a majority of support in a referendum of the neighbourhood. They also have to meet a number of conditions before they can be put to a community referendum and legally come into force. These conditions are to ensure plans are legally compliant and take account of wider policy considerations (e.g. national policy). Conditions are: 1. 2. 3.

they must have regard to national planning policy they must be in general conformity with strategic policies in the development plan for the local area (i.e. such as in a core strategy) they must be compatible with EU obligations and human rights requirements.

An independent qualified person then checks that a neighbourhood development plan or order appropriately meets the conditions before it can be voted on in a local referendum. This is to make sure that referendums only take place when proposals are workable and of a decent quality. Proposed neighbourhood development plans or orders need to gain the approval of a majority of voters of the neighbourhood to come into force. If proposals pass the referendum, the local planning authority will be under a legal duty to bring them into force. Haxey Parish Council at their last meeting was addressed by an Officer of North Lincolnshire Council on Neighbourhood Plans and it was resolved to investigate the potential for a Neighbourhood Plan for the Parish. The information above is an extract from the North Lincolnshire Council Planning Portal. It has been a very busy summer down on the farm, Kids at Coneygarth Holiday Club is very popular due to the facilities we have and the quality and range of activities we offer. We have three acres of secure woodland where many of these activities take place, we also have lots of themed days eg Cowboy and Indians, Pirates, Harry Potter, Dr Who etc. All meals and snacks are provided; we specialise in giving the children home cooked food. The Holiday club is available to all children of primary school age. If required transport can be provided from the Finningley area. The Olympics has been a great source of entertainment this summer, in the large grassy play area an arena was created with a marked out Olympic track, where children could emulate Jess Ennis, Mo Farrow, etc. All the children have taken part and enjoyed receiving a gold medal for their participation. Both nurseries have spaces for 0-5 year olds, please remember the preschool children are entitled to 15 hours free flexible funding which can be used on its own or in conjunction with paid hours. Like schools we cover the Early Years Foundation stage curriculum delivering personal, social and emotional development, communication and language, literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts & design. Please feel free to visit either nursery to view the facilities and see what we have to offer.

TRENTSIDE FEDERATION SCHOOL NEWS What a busy end of term we had at both St Martin’s and West Butterwick Primary Schools. In addition to the usual end of term events such as Sports Afternoon and the residential educational visit to PGL Centre at Caythorpe Court near Grantham, we had an interesing visitor-experience at St Martin’s – Mr Terry Oliver – a local gentleman who had found an intriguing message in a bottle whilst conducting his river conservation work around Amcotts. This message in a bottle turned out to be from St Martin’s pupils in Class 3 from 2006! The children had been working on the topic ‘Shipwrecked’ and had received permission to send off this bottled message in the River Trent, all that time ago. For 6 years it had been in the River Trent – luckily, finally discovered by Mr Oliver who then carefully opened the bottle, Alfie Temperton trophy winner at unfurled the card inside to read the message. Mr Oliver St Martin's Sports promptly contacted the school and was invited in to share his ‘treasure of the Trent’! We were lucky enough to also be able to invite Miss Czaplinski back to school – she was the Class 3 teacher back in 2006. We were all delighted to see the bottle and its contents, as well as learning about River Conservation and water safety from Mr Oliver. So, all in all, it was a very worthwhile visit. At our end of term Leavers’ Services, both schools were very pleased to have Ben Parkinson involved in presenting various trophies. The children and staff are definitely inspired by all of Ben’s achievements and his motto ‘always a little further’. St Martin’s trophies presented were Music ; Ruby Naylor-Adamson, Maths ; Sam Hattersley, Literacy ; Lois Matthews, Service to the School ; Ellie Watts, Ben Parkinson award ; Tiffany Frost. Achievement awards were presented to ; Ryan Trewick, Ruby Smith, Kate Foreman, Harry Watts, Abbie Garner, Lauren Lindley and Jimmy Smith. West Butterwick trophies presented were – Stephen Dawson Achievement Trophy ; Charlie Hobson, Sportsmanship ; Ryan Richardson, Pupils’ Pupil ; Amy Harris-Kendrick and Ryan Richardson, Service to the School ; Holly Willerton, St Mary’s Award ; Jacob Pearson. As a special treat this year, Mr McLeod led the five West Butterwick Leavers up to see the bell of St Mary’s and also gave a brief history of the bell and clock. The children were on the look-out for vampire bats in the belfry, but I am pleased to say none were spotted! We also said a fond farewell to three teachers – Mr Green, Miss Foreman and Miss Dance who we presented with various gifts and good wishes for their new and exciting career developments. Hopefully, everyone will now have a relaxing Summer break, refreshed for the new academic year in September! Mrs Josephine Buckle, Headteacher, St Martin’s and West Butterwick Church of England Primary Schools – the Trentside Federation Mr Terry Oliver with Miss Ramona Czaplinski and three pupils

Doncaster Advanced Motorist Driving on motorways in bad weather continued. Dear readers, Ice and Snow. Avoid driving in extremely wintry conditions, is any journey really worth the risk? Only in extreme cases are motorways affected by settling snow. Usually snowploughs and gritter lorries keep them clear. However, slip roads and hard shoulders don’t always get the same treatment, so take extra care. Also be aware that bridges are particularly susceptible to re-freezing and black ice. In sub-zero conditions drive at a safe speed, allow extra braking distance and make extra smooth steering and braking actions to avoid unsettling your vehicle. If you have to travel in extreme conditions, ensure you have plenty of fuel, take a shovel, spare warm clothes and other essential supplies like water to drink. In extreme winter conditions, drive as if you are walking on eggs! Stay in a high gear and don’t make any sudden inputs as these may cause a slide. The left-hand lane carries most traffic, so is likely to be the most clear of snow and ice. Stay there as much as possible. Do not put your wheels on, or try to drive through the lines of slush and ice that collect between lanes. Strong Winds. Cross winds and turbulence can severely unsettle your car and even change your direction of travel. Prepare for strong, unsettling winds when you drive on to a flyover or viaduct where protective embankments disappear. Driving past HGVs at speed has a similar effect. Be aware of the effects of strong winds on motorcycles and other vehicles like high-sided lorries, vans and caravans. Give them a wide birth, plan your overtake away from the high risk conditions and consider leaving the middle lane as a “buffer zone”. Take extra care when driving flat-sided vehicles like vans, people carriers and 4x4s. Grip the steering wheel firmly and be ready to counter the unsettling ‘deflection’ when you pass an HGV. When changing lanes in poor weather look extra carefully in your mirrors for vehicles travelling without lights on. As soon as conditions clear remember to turn off your fog lights. It’s an offence to leave them on in good visibility or at night when your headlights would be adequate. Avoid over-use of fog lights and driving lights. Their high-intensity beams may blind other road uses in clear conditions. Only use rear fog lights in extreme conditions as they can be dazzling and annoying. They might also mask the fact that your brake lights have come on. Be aware that fog lights may cancel when full-beam is used. If you would like to take a Free Public Assessment Drive please contact me below. This offer is available to all our Arrow readers
