WELCOME 2020 has been a year of transition.

Stepping into the role as Chair, following the direction of founder Abby Phillips after 8 years of service, I knew I had big shoes to fill. We started the year, growing into our new role as the largest fundraiser of our parent organization, Arrow Creative. We embrace our role, we bring in sponsors, businesses and community partners, knowing that we can make a difference in the creative community of Memphis. We started by growing our committee of volunteers to prepare for what would be a year of A New Vision for Fashion. We then looked to our sponsors and supporters to help us create a top level event that incorporated all of our local fashion entrepreneurs; the designers, the stylists, the models, the photographers and more! This year has far exceeded any expectations I may have had by being able to see just how much we can impact our city in working towards a more robust creative economy.

This year we present collections of five designers along with our Emerging Memphis Designer Project (EMDP) designers. We’re proud to celebrate international designers alongside our local designers. By introducing our designers to outside markets, we hope to truly help cultivate a collaborative spirit in Memphis. Our designers are Headliner- Recreo San Miguel from San Miguel, Mexico, Aconav by Loren Aragon, in partnership with the Brooks Museum, from Phoenix, AZ, Lafayette 148, presented by Joseph, from New York, and our own Memphis designers; Neesha Valore and Najee Strickland Designs.

Our EMDP numbered over 30 this year.

Learn more about the project and check out their feature on page 25. Don’t miss our Freeze models during intermission as we welcome boutiques to showcase their stores with the help of our professional MFW stylists.

I couldn’t be more proud of our 2020 designers, models and backstage crew who have worked so hard to perfect the show. A special thanks to the Memphis Fashion Week committee who has volunteered many-many hours to make this week happen and the incredible sponsors who continue to believe in and support our mission.

This year's THE LOOK

Contestants were required to submit a cohesive portfolio of five curated photos for a fashion editorial look. Each year, the winner receives a $300 stipend for photography plus a $300 gift certificate from LensRentals, an editorial spread, a full page advertisement in the Memphis Fashion Week program, and credit on all photos used for the event throughout the year.

-BY BROOKE BALLARD Seamless, but bold, a delicate pair to describe this year’s cover shoot. The Location was on my radar: Mollie Fontaine Lounge, a charming eclectic, Victorian house that has been transformed into a hot spot for Memphis nightlife. Drawn to its avant-garde atmosphere, I was curious to see what daylight would show of the space. As I imagined, the detailed interiors and rich tones of the furniture came alive—shoot location decided. With the expertise of Memphis’ very own portrait photographer, Josh Owens, our vivid colors and elements were captured in an aweing perspective. Stylists Faith Pool and Kayla Young teamed up to create astonishing ensembles, collaborating several brands we know and love, talk about a dynamic duo. Looks highlighted pieces from

retailers such as Janie Rose Boutique, Kittie Kyle, Joseph’s and Indigo. Faith Pool led the vision behind Pavo Salon’s hair and makeup. We chose sleek hair, and a bold eye, and with that, Pavo Salon executed an effortlessly perfect look. With this shoot, there were no rules, and as a creative team, we intended to break barriers. Textures and tones mixed terrifically, making a vivid pallet of our models, Elsy and Fanny Rodriguez. We played around with different elements, wallpapers, and light sources, slowly transitioning from one room of the lounge to the next. Starting with dressier looks and transitioning into street wear, each shot spoke volumes in a unique way, and that’s just what we wanted to achieve.

ACONAV is a Native American owned and operated couture fashion brand based in Phoenix, AZ. The brand celebrates the strength and empowerment of women through positive expressions in designs that tie the culture to modern style. The brand’s purpose is to properly and respectfully represent a part of NAtive America in fashion. ACONAV is a representation of a people, the story, and its culture. The goal of ACONAV is to be a recognizable and reliable entity in the fashion industry, while working to establish meaningful relationships with groups and individuals in fashion and the greater community.

Neesh a val ore designs NeeshaValore Designs was created in August 2010 under the brand name Neesha Inc. With many different trials and tributations, NeeshaValore Designs became the “It Brand” that it is today. NeeshaValore Designs has been featured in Memphis Fashion Week and Memphis Black Fashion Week 901 along with other shows in the Memphis and Maryland areas.

Dyne’esha’s designs first walked the MFW runway as an emerging designer in 2019, we’re so proud to have her this year as a featured designer

najee strickland designs Inspired by rich textures and tones from Latin America, each garment is individually tailored to perfection. Fabrics are globally sourced, but a majority of the garments are locally constructed near their San Miguel de Allende birthplace.

Recreo works with a highly skilled team in which each member of the team plays an intricate part in the process. From designers to silversmiths, the creators focus on producing luxury and uniqueness that clients will cherish for years.

Najee Strickland is a couture clothing designer out of Memphis, TN. He created Najee Strickland Designs in 2015. His metaphorical and conceptual designs focus on sending political/social messages in an artistic form. In other words, art imitating life. Najee’s designs first walked the MFW runway as an emerging designer in 2013, we’re so excited to showcase his designs this year as a featured designer.

presented by Josephs Lafayette 148 New York is a New York-based women’s fashion brand named after the address in SoHo where they were founded. Created in 1996, they are knows for sophisticated, clean-lined designs that fuse lucurious fabrics, outstanding craftsmanship, and a modern sensibility inspired by the dynamism of New York City. With new corporate headquarters in the Brooklyn Navy Yard and their very own workshop and production facility, they’re a rarity in the fashion world: a truly vertically integrated brand.

While most fashion shows and on lookers tend to focus their gaze to the more seasoned designers, the Emerging Memphis Designer Project, also known as EMDP, spotlights local upcoming designers across the Midsouth.

Jessika Williams, social media intern for EMDP, states the budding fashion community in Memphis makes her pleased to be overseeing the newest trend setters. “Being able to recognize and celebrate these impressive upcoming Memphis designers and creatives is absolutely my favorite part of Memphis Fashion Week!” Williams said.

This year there are 33 applicants, who have endured a rigorous seven-month process that starts at the drawing stage. EMDP liaison, Ramona Sonin, an associate professor and the Program Coordinator at the Fashion Design and Merchandising department at the University of Memphis, consults with each applicant on what changes need to be made in order to get them prepared for garment construction. At the end of the process, designers are judged by local fashion experts to pick which garments will walk the runway on April 4. new paragraph Joshua Nichols, personal assistant to Sonin and MFW backstage crew, stated that the designers for the EMDP showcase are bringing a component to the show that is something to look out for. “These are designers who aren’t established yet,” Nichols said. “The feature designers have some real competition. Call me biased, but The EMDP designers are 10 times better, because they are trying to get their feet wet.” Among those is Grace Siler a Memphis based designer, who manages to catch the attention of all those she meets. Siler makes her own textiles and constructs looks that blur the line between masculine and feminine.

“You could switch the clothes she (Siler) makes between men and women, and it would still make perfect sense,” Nichols said “it’s really impeccable.”

Although some of these names may not ring a bell, the emerging designer’s showcase is one to keep an eye out for. The showcase, which takes place at the Hu Hotel in downtown Memphis during Memphis Fashion Week will offer the aspiring creators the chance to network and be celebrated. Most of the designers will showcase full lines while others will show single garments.

I consider the EMDP such a special part of MFW and I consider myself lucky to be overseeing the EMDP designers! There is a growing fashion community here in Memphis and I am proud to be a part of it by working with the emerging designers and MFW as well as through fashion education. The EMDP gives aspiring Memphis designers the opportunity network with other designers in the community as well as receiving feedback of their designs in frequent critiques through the 6 month process. The participants and their designs are also given exposure by having the platform to showcase their creativity to the memphis fashion community through an EMDP Showcase event of all participating designers this year being held at the Hu Hotel as well as the excitement of runway night during MFW. Being able to recognize and celebrate these impressive upcoming Memphis designers and creatives is absolutely my favorite part!

For the past nine years, Memphis Fashion Week has brought beautiful design to Memphis audiences via runway and freeze shows highlighting past talents such as Carol Peretz, Nicole Miller, and Rachel Roy. Local retailers have been a part of this movement by bringing the freshest looks to women in the region and providing the styles that keep them relevant in today’s cultural world.
