We are not architects who do healthcare. We are healthcare architects

What does this mean?

It means we chose this profession so we can do more than just design buildings. We chose it to design solutions that can change people’s lives significantly. Because when a transplant patient receives a new heart, or a mental health patient reaches a breakthrough, or a physician develops a medical procedure that improves the lives of thousands, it happens inside a space designed by a healthcare architect. This is why we arrive every morning with our sleeves rolled up and ready to work.

DESIGN & ARCHITECTURE

Our firm develops and implements concepts that emerge as transformative built solutions. Array remains focused on the healing that will take place within our clients’ facilities and the lives affected by the building’s shape, performance, and functional adjacencies. As a healthcare-exclusive practice, our focus is singular, and our commitment to a collaborative approach facilitates operational excellence and drives innovation.

PLANNING

Array goes to great lengths to substantiate our solutions with hard data. Our pragmatic process, intensified by our unique planning toolkit, enables more-informed decisions to maximize flexibility, efficiency, and return on investment.

INTERIOR DESIGN

Beyond creating beautiful spaces influenced by hospitality, we have a responsibility to bring the latest evidence, benchmark data, lean thinking, and examples of successful projects into the design process. By doing so, we help our clients realize their full potential to drive a change in culture, improve patient outcomes, increase patient satisfaction, and foster an environment of collaboration.

Discovering Your Healthcare Solutions Together.

We help clients deliver more efficient and effective care, stake a more competitive position in the market, and plan to ensure facilities embody their operational vision.

STRATEGIC PLANNING

Reach consensus around strategy to supercharge your plan for the future. We work with health systems to develop strategies that drive sustainable business models across the continuum of care.

MASTER PLANNING

We have learned that while master planning engagements can transform an organization, the outputs of the traditional process are inherently broken. Master planning teams either omit the necessary perspectives, or these roles are siloed or filled by external consultants, creating delays and limiting rapid re-assessments. As Lean planners, we improve the value of master planning by redesigning the process. Array not only facilitates discussions between key stakeholders representing different perspectives, but our team brings its own functional expertise. The team’s broad experience builds credibility with stakeholders across the organization and advances data-driven discussions of needs and priorities.

PRE-DESIGN PLANNING & OPTIMIZATION

Lean is an operational strategy that can be used to achieve specific goals defined by your organization. Our experience extends from strategic decision making, where we help you define organizational goals, to tactical workflow analysis, where we assist in developing countermeasures appropriate to your specific situation. We use this as a foundation to develop a more robust program alongside your leaders setting your project up for success as design begins.

CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL OF THE KING’S DAUGHTERS

Children’s Pavilion

Norfolk, VA

CHKD’s Children’s Pavilion is a new 14-story, 367,000 SF tower built to address a pressing need for pediatric mental health services in the Norfolk community. Opened in July 2022, the colorful, light-filled facility is infused with leading-practice patient, family, and staffcentric design features.

Children’s Pavilion integrates comprehensive inpatient, intensive outpatient, and partial hospitalization mental health services with primary and specialty physician practices, lab and imaging services, and an innovative conference and training center. A core principle—that mental healthcare is healthcare, and that access to mental health services

should be convenient and visible to all in need—shaped both the program and physical manifestation of this guiding principle.

The tower includes 60 pediatric inpatient behavioral health beds as well as shell space to accommodate another 24 beds. In addition to the expected multipurpose dining, activity, and classroom spaces, the inpatient zones include a large art studio, music therapy, and an attached indoor gymnasium and exercise therapy room. It is capped off with a rooftop recreation space comprised of basketball court, soccer zone, and horticultural zone, with interspersed casual play zones.

INSPIRA HEALTH

Greenfield Hospital

Mullica Hill, NJ

Array was selected as part of an integrated team to provide planning and design services for the replacement of Inspira Health’s Woodbury hospital. After selection, Inspira asked Array to lead a rapid assessment phase integrating their strategic plan, financial projections, and operational goals along with site and cost analysis to determine if the replacement hospital should remain on the existing site or move to a new site in the service area.

After determining a new site would best serve the health system’s goals, Array began our process-led Lean design approach to program and plan the new facility. Cross functional work sessions were held with each team to map the current state flows of every department. Armed with a detailed assessment, we worked with the teams to develop the ideal future state and work flows for the new facility.

The 460,000 SF facility sits on a 100-acre site and includes 210 private patient rooms, smart room technology, and a chassis built to grow. The facility features a split flow emergency

department that includes an integrated pediatrics sub-unit including observation and inpatient beds. The surgical and procedural areas have been combined into a universal interventional platform to promote flexibility and efficiency.

All patient care units are designed with staff effectiveness and safety in mind. Family and patient comfort is incorporated through large windows, distributed pockets of waiting and respite, a single point of checkin an registration for all visits and visitors, outdoor dining and garden areas, as well as a technology hub in the lobby to assist patients and families with personal health technology devices and integration.

By embarking on a highly-collaborative structure from the outset, the integrated team identified methodologies that have resulted in a significant square footage reduction from the original benchmarked program, as well as defining a schedule that resulted in an operational facility within 33 months from the start of design.

NEMOURS CHILDREN’S HEALTH

Outpatient & Surgery Center

Deptford, NJ

When a national children’s hospital decided to move into a new market, they needed to move quickly. As with all ambulatory projects in today’s competitive environment, being first to market with the right product at the right cost is critical. But it’s tough to move quickly when you are building a project unlike any other in your system.

Array Architects and Nemours Children’s Health used a process-led design approach to rapidly define and design a new, fully integrated multispecialty outpatient center that features flexible provider clinics, physical therapy, diagnostic imaging, wellness and ambulatory surgery. Our approach, using Lean as a foundation, allowed Nemours to work through complex questions about integration, resource

deployment and business/revenue implications while studying physical configurations and cost structures to support them. All of this was achieved without sacrificing commitment to capital budget objectives as well as schedule.

Process-led design employs a rigorous and engaging approach to quickly define goals and obstacles. Process-before-design encourages the integrated team to focus on experience, quality, outcomes and workflow before specific spatial configurations begin to limit innovation. Process mapping, visual programming, virtual and physical mock ups as well as rapid prototyping were used in parallel during the early design phases to ensure the optimal solution.

EMBLEM HEALTH

Medical Office Building

Brooklyn, NY

A modern, cutting-edge development at a prominent intersection in Brooklyn provides a comprehensive care experience for the community. With major highway access, subway stations and high-traffic bus routes, the building truly serves to expand this System’s services to a large population. The neighborhood care center occupies a portion of the first floor with its own entrance while connecting internally to specialty services.

The folded articulation of the glass in the upper stories respond to solar heat gain by self-shading with tinted reflective glass sloping upward and clearer glass below allowing sweeping views of the skyline. The rippling effect transfers below to a perforated metal cloud shrouding the parking deck while allowing light and air to flow through. At night, the whole building-the tallest in the area-

glows as a beacon. Parking and patient dropoff are raised to the second floor, allowing the sloped canopy to pull pedestrians in at the first floor level. Vehicular traffic can flow through the building, dropping passengers off at the 2nd floor Lobby and continuing out to street level. The facade was fabricated as a modular system allowing for a simplified install from the interior of the building, reducing street closure logistics.

The ground floor holds specialty services including urgent care, imaging, phlebotomy and a non-compounding pharmacy. Elevators pass through the parking levels to the sleek and modern patient waiting area located along the angled glass facade. Offices are located off of the main concourse arranged in a simple manner to allow for the greatest flexibility in the ever-changing clinical specialties.

NEW YORK CITY HEALTH + HOSPITALS Henry J. Carter Specialty Hospital

New York, NY

NYC Heath + Hospitals (H+H) engaged Array to develop the former North General Hospital site and facility for the new Henry J. Carter Campus. With a mandate to close H+H’s South Roosevelt Island facility, the North (Harlem) campus afforded the opportunity to convert a shuttered acute care hospital into a long-term acute care hospital and construct a new skilled nursing facility on the adjacent site.

The two patient towers and associated ground floor services located in a shared lobby/ link were completed in November 2013. Incorporating culture-change principles, the new nursing facility features common social and living spaces and accessible outdoor space on all floors for residents. The first floors of both buildings provide shared social, activity, religious and therapeutic spaces; a

multi-purpose community room is available to local groups for special events. A single point-of-access with a new connecting concourse and adjacent light-filled landscaped courtyard linking the two structures promotes security and fosters resident and staff sense of community.

This IPD-like project was delivered for the City of New York with a significantly accelerated schedule and 18 early-release construction packages. Performance incentives/ disincentives that include shared cost and schedule metrics for both the construction management firm (Gilbane) and design team helped drive the success of this project. As a means to foster collaboration, the design and construction team was collocated for the duration of this project.

BAPTIST HEALTH SOUTH FLORIDA

Miami Cancer Institute

Miami, FL

Array was engaged to provide operational improvement, programming and design services for the fitout of a Cancer Research Building on the new campus of the Miami Cancer Institute (MCI) for Baptist Health South Florida. The Institute, affiliated with Memorial Sloan Kettering, provides improved patient access to treatment and advanced protocols. The new program consists of clinical trials, a genomics lab, a USP 800 pharmacy, outpatient bone marrow transplantation, integrated palliative care and many sub-specialty clinics.

As the delivery of oncology services drives a tighter connection between research and

clinical care, this building represents the unifying program of spaces in that equation. Each workflow and each space was studied, tested, and crafted to represent the balance between integrated research and exemplary patient care. Truly affording “bench-tobedside” care through genomics testing and clinical trials, MCI also explored new avenues in other holistic realms of healthcare as it sought to redefine the characteristics and environment for palliative care. The new building stands as a hallmark for holistic, integrated cancer care.

CHILDREN’S NATIONAL HOSPITAL

Shepherd Park Outpatient Care Center

Washington, DC

In 2017, Children’s National Hospital (CNH) engaged Array Architects and Elkus Manfredi to lead the planning and redevelopment of the health and science portion of the 12-acre former Walter Reed Army Medical Center campus for pediatric health services. The design team worked closely with the client, the Washington DC Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC 4B), the DCRA, and the DC Historic Preservation Board to develop a plan that represents the interests of all who will benefit from this campus redevelopment.

In the first phase of the redevelopment, Building 52, a former tuberculosis hospital, was transformed into a clinical care facility. A fully-renovated interior, energy efficiency upgrades, and all-new MEP infrastructure helped bring the building up to a modern

standard of care. Programming and design strategies that included reclamation of sleeping porches as conditioned interior spaces, planning for on-stage/off-stage zones, rigorous material selection, and a keen understanding of the client’s workflow resulted in a facility that enables clinical efficiencies and multi-disciplinary community-focused care. An element of “play” is integrated throughout to establish an inviting, light-filled, and comfortable care facility.

This newly-adapted building is now a whimsical, vibrant, and historically-significant pediatric outpatient center housing 24 exam rooms and staff support spaces at the forefront of Children’s National’s developing new pediatric research and innovation hub.

JEFFERSON HEALTH

Navy Yard

Philadelphia, PA

Multispecialty Outpatient Center

When Jefferson Health and Aegis Project Management engaged Array to design their first-ever multi-specialty clinic, our team had the privilege of working with Jefferson Health leadership to create a landmark facility at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Transforming a building that was once corporate home to the NBA’s 76ers and the Tastykake Baking corporate offices, we were challenged to create a flexible and changeable space in a growing location. Employing mock-ups, user engagement exercises and a lean planning process, we gained consensus among multiple specialties, users and staff to design a facility which drives collaboration, delivers convenience and enables coordinated care.

The comprehensive, 56,000 SF renovation included adding a communicating stair; mechanical and plumbing upgrades; additional

fireproofing; and, elevator upgrades to set the stage for transformation to a multi-specialty health center. A variety of specialties located in the facility span the spectrum of care, including core, complementary, destination, supporting and consultative services in one location.

A light, bright and comfortable interior with curvilinear features helps soften the edges of the building. An approachable and welcoming atmosphere was prioritized in the design to appeal to multiple user groups, including millennials working nearby, South Philadelphia natives who are accustomed to more traditional healthcare experiences as well as mobility-challenged patients. Jefferson Health’s new facility satisfies their goal of creating a consumer-oriented health home and regional health care destination.

CLEVELAND CLINIC INDIAN RIVER HOSPITAL

Cancer Center

Vero Beach, FL

With an integrated multi-specialty Health & Wellness Center being designed by Array for the campus, Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital selected the same design team to bring a new Cancer Center to the community. An existing Radiation Oncology pavilion dictated the location of the new Center at a congested nexus of the campus. The new Scully-Welsh Cancer Center, affiliated with Duke University, brings state-of-the-art, compassionate care to the Indian River community.

The Cancer Center features multi-modality clinics, integrated treatment planning, infusion, radiation therapy, survivorship, e-source and education programs, and

access to clinical trials and research. In a bucolic setting within the Indian River campus, a healing garden links the Cancer Center and Health & Wellness Center, creating new, dedicated open space on campus. The new Cancer Center establishes the Medical Center’s brand for the expanded cancer program through the design of both the patient experience and the building.

Together, the Cancer Center and the Health & Wellness Center form a new outpatient campus, in-sync with the renowned Cleveland Clinic’s image and reputation for world-class comprehensive cancer care, close to home.

NEWYORK-PRESBYTERIAN

Milstein Patient Tower

New York, NY

New York Presbyterian Columbia University Medical Center commissioned Array to modernize and upgrade their 10-story Milstein inpatient tower. While contending with a tight urban campus spread over three NYC blocks, the client sought to support clinical efficiency and improve wayfinding to ensure a patient experience and environment in sync with their world-class reputation.

During the CON process, Array recommended the grouping of program elements and phasing scenarios that resulted in budget savings. One of the primary goals of the Modernization Planning Study was to improve wayfinding and arrival sequence within floors five through nine of the Milstein Tower. Array developed a simplified wayfinding system

featuring revitalized elevator lobbies on each inpatient floor featuring dramatic and vibrant art to help visitors and staff navigate each distinct patient unit.

This $119 million, 164,000 SF renovation positively impacted clinical care, nursing efficiencies, staff collaboration and patient amenities. Improvements included a decentralized nursing model, upgrades to patient rooms and fully renovated patient toilet rooms. Revitalized elevator lobbies at each inpatient floor set the tone and expectation of a superior experience for each arriving visitor. Dramatic and vibrant art complemented strong wayfinding elements, helping visitors and staff navigate each distinct patient unit.

CAPITAL HEALTH

Hopewell Greenfield Hospital

Pennington, NJ

Array, in association with HKS, Inc., designed a new state-of-the-art replacement hospital for Capital Health. Collaborating with Anchor Health Properties (developer & owner’s representative), the design team was tasked with creating a facility that elicits a “Wow, I can’t believe this is a hospital!” response.

To achieve this goal, the 925,000 SF, 223-bed hospital features healing gardens, views to nature, soothing water features, and a focus on patient and family amenities throughout the facility. An uplifting fivestory atrium links the central diagnostic and treatment chassis with a patient tower on one side and a medical office building on the other, serving both inpatient and outpatient

populations. As patient safety, familyfocused care and operational efficiency were the primary design drivers, the design team effectively segregated inpatient and outpatient flows to support an exceptional care experience.

As a result of thoughtful design considerations and programming, the hospital has attracted new patients and inpatient volume increased 14% over initial projections. HKS, Inc. served as the Architect of Record (exterior image credit) for the project, while Array provided programming, department specific planning, corporate architecture and interior design services to this project.

NYU LANGONE HEALTH

Perlmutter Cancer Center

Brooklyn, NY

To provide outpatient cancer services closer to home for the Brooklyn population, NYU Langone chose to renovate a vacated garage/warehouse structure across the street from their Brooklyn hospital. The existing 27,000 SF building was well suited for conversion to cancer treatment as it had partial double height space and adequate structure to support the services, specifically radiation oncology. The building exterior was completely re-clad with a contemporary façade and soaring glass windows in the waiting areas to reflect the NYU brand and investment in the community.

A new entrance vestibule provides access to a two-story reception/waiting area serving to link the first floor radiation oncology services and the second floor infusion center. The radiation oncology program consists of a practice site with four exam rooms, treatment planning with 1 CT-simulator, two linear accelerators for radiation treatment, patient

gowning/waiting as well as a stretcher holding position for those arriving by ambulette. Additional first floor functions, accessed by a discrete staff/service entrance, include building support, staff support, as well as staff/physician offices and amenities.

The infusion center includes a welcoming reception and visitor waiting space, which provides a view to the first floor waiting space. There are 24 infusion bays supported by two team stations providing ideal patient visibility. Natural light from perimeter windows and skylights enhances the quality of the environment for patients and staff. Dedicated staff offices and amenities are provided on this floor for the Infusion Center team. Other second floor functions include a lab with patient blood-draw, a two-position fast-track infusion room, and one exam room. There is also a USP 797/800 conforming infusion center pharmacy for compliant sterile and hazardous drug compounding.

COLUMBIADOCTORS

Multispecialty Practice & Imaging Expansion

Tarrytown, NY

Columbia University Medical Center engaged Array Architects to expand their ColumbiaDoctors medical practice in Tarrytown, New York. The expanded facility includes a new vestibule with a canopy to provide convenient access from the parking area. The floor plan facilitates collaboration among physicians and is laid out with patients’ needs in mind. Colorcoordinated signage and accent walls help patients navigate the facility.

The project was carried out in two phases: phase 1 included the renovation of the first floor in the West Building to offer comprehensive medical care, including radiology, cardiology, ortho, rehab, neurology, surgery, lab, and staff support. The medical practice is outfitted with a suite

of diagnostic imaging services—CT and MRI, IR, fluoroscopy, and ultrasound, plus 22 exam rooms and rooms equipped for procedures such as cardiac stress tests.

A CT scanner originally installed as part of this renovation was replaced in 2021. NewYorkPresbyterian Columbia University Medical Center returned to Array in 2020 to analyze technical architectural and MEP aspects to ensure the new equipment would be compatible with existing room layout and infrastructure. Input from and coordination with GE (CT Vendor) was important, and we organized and facilitated this component in conjunction with overall project planning, design, and management.

KAISER PERMANENTE

Regional Clinical Lab & Office Space

MidAtlantic, US

Array was engaged by this national healthcare leader to address significant growth in the Mid-Atlantic region and align lab operations with Kaiser’s national strategy. The regional expansion/lab alignment project involves the development of a long-term replacement facility on the same site as the aging facility - maintaining operations on site throughout construction. The new facility was planned and designed to support long-term membership and growth within the region.

The Array team worked closely with client stakeholders to develop a state-of-the-art laboratory utilizing robotics and advanced functional planning techniques, which have been developed as part of Kaiser’s corporatewide improvement strategy nationwide. The proposed solution includes expansion

capabilities for laboratory functions while also accommodating related administrative functions. In addition, conference and training spaces were included in the design to address future needs of the region.

The building design and materials palette were selected to reflect a duality of functions. The materials are both “high tech” (metal and glass) as an expression of the advanced technologies being utilized in the space as well as “high touch” (wood and stone) to provide a human-scaled and familiar environment to the staff occupying the facility. The public will experience the facility as a part of the urbanizing fabric of Rockville, Maryland. The project is designed to achieve LEED Gold certification.
