Professional Cd. Guzmรกn, Jalisco. 2020 A holiday home in a hillside terrain was designed integrating sustainable design principles. Rammed earth walls were proposed for thermal mass.

The volume is oriented to protect from the prevailing winds which can cause considerable temperature drops that can affect comfort levels.

A greenhouse is projected on the south facade to enhance the capture of heat during the day on the rammed earth walls, to then have it released during cold night hours.

The entire structure, other than the rammed earth walls is built out of wood because of its insulation properties and local abailability.

The comunal areas are buried 2m deep in the existing platform to further protect from heat losses.

Views are preserved on the North and NorthWest facades providing extra insulation to keep the heat inside.

MeridaYucatĂĄn 2016 For the design of an extension of a holiday home in the hot and humid climate of MĂŠrida, references from vernacular houses of similar tropical climates were used.

All roofs are projected in four directions to provide shade and create verandas. Operable windows are located on the top and bottom parts of the walls to evacuate heat and receive cool air respectively.

A courtyard was created at the center of the plot in order to create shallow plans that generate effective natural cross ventilation taking advantage from the prevailing winds comming from the east.

The main central double height volume serves as an air stratification device which increases airflow, receiving cool air from the courtyard and exhausts it at the top. Solar panels and solar water heaters are proposed on the roof of the volume.

In the dissertation project, solar radiation is identified as the main factor driving comfort levels in narrow stepped canyons in neglected neighbourhoods of Magdalena Contreras municipality in the SouthWest of Mexico City. Globe temperatures inside them can surpass 30ยบC just after a short clear sky period. Also, water cycles generate problems of flooding and potable water shortages in the area. A system of shading devices and rainwater collectors is proposed to provide outdoor comfort and reduce the problems with water management. The designs were developed based on fieldwork carried out in Mexico City, and simulations using Autodesk Ecotect, and Rayman/Sky Helios to predict Outdoor comfort levels.

AnalysisofHousing Schemes in London.

The buildings soon to replace Robin Hood Gardens buildings in East London were analysed by our 4 students team. I was in charge of the drawing of the 3d models needed, solar and wind access analysis using Ecotect and the daylight access analysis using DIVA for Rhino. From this research project I obtained knowledge on UK regulations and the overheating problems that many of the newly built dwellings around London present during the summer.

Student Housing design in London.

An adequate environmental performance, reduced energy consumption and provision of sufficient daylight constitute the main premise for the design of student housing units at the Royal Docks in London. The images on the left show the design of the self contained units and the communal space, the daylighting analysis carried out using DIVA for Rhino and the masterplan rendering. Effective south orientation and window sizes were proposed as well as louvers for solar control. The project was developed by a 4 student team. I produced the images and simulations here shown.

“MANUFACTUREDLANDSCAPES/URBANITIES WORKSHOP. June 26 - July 5, 2013.

I was awarded a scholarship from Hewlett Packard Mexico to take the workshop, which helped me to better understand the work flow and study methodologies of the AA. Particularly of the Landscape Urbanism Masters Program, with the excellent tutoring of Alfredo Ramírez and Clara Oloriz.

The workshop was dedicated to the design of projects for the regeneration of “Barrancas del Moral” in Mexico City, one of the few natural rainwater collection systems left in the city, that suffers from a severe problem of irregular human settlements causing terrible pollution in the river Magdalena.

A risk identification strategy superposing landslide and water runoff obstruction by buildings data layers using QGIS software was used to propose a central core that contains drainage and water services as well as rainwater filters in the hilly terrain.

The location and orientation of the existing building, exposed during the day to extreme solar radiation made urgent the design of a project that, will reduce the direct solar incidence in the building and reduce overheating. All this with the use of UV protected glazing and extruded framing in all the windows, as well as two vertical gardens for thermal insulation on walls and a system of metallic panels to cover the facade and create an air gap to reduce heat.

This project made me realize the need to obtain knowledge on the scientific principles involved in the environmental performance of buildings to be able to design truly sustainable projects.

The proposal for a summer house, uses brick and concrete as main materials. The design contemplates a central inner garden that makes possible the natural illumination of all the rooms. The central volume contains a metallic spiral staircase as well as a library enveloping the interior.

The project for “San Bartolo� housing units, was developed around the concept of an indoor garden. My interest in sustainability encouraged me to explore the possibilities for food production inside dwellings.

For this purpose there is only one solid wall in the kitchen, all the other lateral walls are made out of glass with metallic framing, containing green walls that can be used for hydroponic production.

The concept design for these housing units was undertaken from a minimalistic approach. This gave vital importance to the shared public areas and the pool inside the complex. Also, it was considered the adoption of a rain water collection/filtration system in the flat roof of each unit.

GRAIN STORAGE FACILITIES PROFESSIONAL. GUZMAN CITY, JALISCO. 2010.

During my professional experience at the construction company we were subcontracted to build various grain storage facilities. I was in charge of plan drawing, renderings, material quantification and construction supervision.

Constructora Rofrisa DESIGN Designs developed during the period I worked at Constructora Rofrisa. The work included cafĂŠs, bars, restaurants, colour studies for private housing and a roundabout constructed in Zapotiltic City.

CASA STANZA. PASSIONE PER IL DESIGN COMPETITION. PROFESSIONAL. GUADALAJARA JALISCO. 2012.

The proposal covers the redesign of an exhibition space in the headquarters of the company to display their new line of bathroom furniture and accessories.

Dupont Corian was proposed for the threedimensional screen and the chandelier, illuminated with LED technology. The ceiling and the shower wall are covered with a wooden lattice.

ARPAFIL 2009. POSSIBLE CITIES PROFESSIONAL. TEAM PROPOSAL. GUADALAJARA, JALISCO. 2009 The competition was to the design an utopical city in the space today occupied by Guadalajara city.

Under the title Sustainable Urban Emancipation, the proposal suggests a “city of cities�. Based on circular modules which gather all the basic necessities of its inhabitants, eliminating cars and replacing them with a public transportation system designed in 3 stages; an elevated train system for transportation between modules, a electric bus system for local transportation, and exclusive cycling roads throughout the city.

MASTER PLAN FOR AN AGRO-TOURISTIC CORRIDOR. ACADEMIC. GUZMAN CITY. 2010.

The imperative need for spaces for culture, academic and business development in the municipality, motivated the development of the AgroTouristic Corridor. That includes designing various architectural entities such as: -Main Plaza / commercial plaza -Conventions centre -Outdoor auditorium -Art galleries -Business centre.

The Zapotlan el Grande Lagoon overlooking the Colima Volcano was selected as the location for the Corridor because of its beauty and tourism potential and at the same time for the creation of a protection belt around it to prevent further environmental deterioration.

The art galleries, within the projects of the AgroTuristic Corridor, act as transition modules between buildings. And contain at the lower level, restaurants with terraces, while the upper level has a combination of indoor-outdoor flexible exhibition spaces. The wooden lattices on the sides of the intersected volumes hold LED screens for multi-purpose projections.

As part of the Agro-Touristic Corridor, The Main & commercial plaza act as entrance and distributors for the project, composed by an upper ludic plaza and an underground commercial plaza which, at its centre, has a monumental fountain inspired by a water droplet. The underground commercial spaces receive sunlight through a series of skylights that also function as rain water collection systems.

Dissertation OUTDOOR AUDITORIUM. ACADEMIC, GUZMAN CITY, JALISCO.2010 Also within the architectonic programme of the Agro-Touristic Corridor in the Lagoon of Zapotlan el Grande, the outdoor-auditorium located on an isle in the centre of the project is formed by a series of screens that rotate around a main arch structure, in order to create an effect of semi-transparency, with the lagoon. It integrates concrete walking trails with grass slopes that allow diversification of the activities.

Basement plan

The Convention Centre is part of the proposed buildings of the “Corredor Agro-Turístico”. The building responds to the pressing need for spaces for the development of culture, art, academic and business activities in the region.

The main exhibition area can be divided to accomodate different kinds of events. It has a tensile structure roof that lets daylight in. Conference rooms, restaurants and services are located in the lower level. The location of the building privileges the views of the lagoon and the volcano.

Undergraduate project CYCLE PARK ACADEMIC. GUZMAN CITY, JALISCO. 2008.

Guzman City´s government asked for proposals for a cycling park along existing concrete water canals in the city. The project included the use of recycled materials, steel and wood. As well as containers for bicycle storage and rent.

LOFT TOWERS.. GUADALAJARA. ACADEMIC. 2009.

Inspired by the female figure covered in raindrops, the loft towers proposed for the city of Guadalajara were designed with amenities such as an automatic parking building for each tower, a cantilevered pool for each unit, and a parametric skin that presents a bold statement to the city capturing amazing 360ยบ views.
