Step into the Past with a Photographic Journey Through a Culinary Icon of Jewish New York

Kibbitz & Nosh: When We All Met at Dubrow’s Cafeteria Thursday, December 12 | 7:30 PM Free and open to the Community

Explore the 1970s through the lens of a unique dining experience at Dubrow’s Cafeteria, a place that was more than just a spot to eat for a generation of Jewish New Yorkers. This exhibition showcases a selection of black and white photographs that capture the grandeur and vibrancy of Dubrow’s Cafeteria.

From intimate portraits to sweeping scenes, the images reveal the lively and sometimes sorrowful essence of urban life in this vanished world.

The exhibition features a recent award-winning book, honored by the Jewish Book Council, which delves deeper into the iconic venue. The project began when Ms. Halperin sought refuge from the winter chill in Dubrow’s Cafeteria. There, amidst its ultra-modern design—mirrored walls, sweeping ceilings, and vibrant murals—she found inspiration for a photographic series that would encapsulate the cafeteria’s unique atmosphere.

The series extends beyond Dubrow’s, including photographs of Horn & Hardart Automats in New York City and Philadelphia, the Garden Cafeteria on the Lower East Side, and cafeterias in Miami and Los Angeles. Complementing the photographs is a large collection of cultural memorabilia, featuring matchbooks, advertisements, newspaper articles, postcards, and more, that traces the rich history of cafeterias.

Meet the photographer, Marcia Bricker Halperin in celebrating this nostalgic journey through a cherished chapter of New York’s culinary and cultural history.
