KIDZANIA, HONG KONG LAUNCHING MID-2024
ON THE HORIZON AT 11 SKIES Set to be Hong Kong’s largest retail, dining and entertainment destination, 11 SKIES at SKYCITY near Hong Kong International Airport is scheduled to roll out trial operations of entertainment experiences this year, starting with KidZania, Hong Kong in the summer. KidZania, Hong Kong, the first in Greater China, will be set in a three-storey, interactive city, where children, aged 14 and under, get to explore their future dream jobs through role play. As a simulation of the real word, there will be around 50 occupational role plays on offer, with children given the opportunity to experience being everything from pilots and medical staff to firefighters, jewellery designers and scientists. There are over 30 KidZanias worldwide, all of which work in collaboration with international and local brands. At KidZania, Hong Kong, children will be offered seven locally exclusive occupational experiences: there’s a Wealth Management Centre by HSBC, Sports Centre by FTLife Insurance, 5G Smart City Technology Hub by Hong Kong Telecom, Modern Chinese Fashion Studio by Sparkle, Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic by Wai Yuen Tong, Chinese Pastry Bakery by Kee Wah Bakery and a Digital Oral Scanning Centre by Modern Dental Group. KidZania, Hong Kong will be the first entertainment experience on offer at 11 SKIES. Going forward, Hong Kong’s largest indoor entertainment hub, covering over 570,000 square feet, will contain eight Hong Kong-first attractions. Themed attractions at 11 SKIES will include Timeless Flight Hong Kong, the territory’s first motion flying theatre; Arte Museum, Hong Kong’s first permanent, immersive digital art exhibition; Paddington Play Adventures, the new Paddington-themed family show and, of course, KidZania. While 11 SKIES’ state-of-the-art office buildings launched in July 2022, there are many more exciting projects in store for the future. VALENTINE’S DAY RACE

Starting and finishing at Treasure Island on Pui O Beach, you can choose to run either the 15-kilometre Tough Love or the 9-kilometre Easy Love, both open to teams of two. rk Eden’s CNY Forest Camps focus on nurturing children’s love of the outdoors and building their confidence and skills through play. The camps are designed for kids aged 5 to 11 years, and run from February 5 to 9 and February 12 to 16 on a beautiful hillside in Mui Wo. There are different nature-based themes each day; activities include shelter building, organic farming, nature crafts, scavenger hunts, storytelling and wild cooking.
Ark Eden has been running camps for kids during school holidays since 2008. Children are invited into a “forest playground,” where they choose their own activities, invent their own games and unleash their curiosity. he YHKCC International Fun Fair and Bazaar was jampacked on December 9. Themed Beyond the Stars, the aim was to transcend boundaries and create a legacy of unity and cultural appreciation. There were culturally-themed game booths where you could redeem gifts, and food stalls providing an international selection of cuisines: Indian, Thai, British, Chinese and local (egg waffles), plus popcorn and cotton candy. HERE BE DRAGONS MARKETING EXEC, MUM AND KID-LIT AUTHOR SUZANNE YOUNAN IS KICKING OFF THE YEAR RIGHT BY BRINGING HER GREEN DRAGON AND HIS ENVIRONMENTAL MESSAGE TO LANTAU. ELIZABETH KERR REPORTS
H
ongkongers go through over five million plastic bottles every single day. As outrageous as that sounds, it inspired former marketing executive turned children’s author Suzanne Younan to establish the volunteer organisation Green Dragons HK. “I thought that had to be a typo, or an error. I didn’t think that could even be possible,” Suzanne opens. She checked and double checked, and kept coming up with the same number, and she boggled each time. A native of Berkshire in the UK, Suzanne relocated to Hong Kong with her then-seven-year-old son and her husband a decade ago for work, though by then she’d given up her marketing career, at one point with Oracle, to be a full-time mum. As a newcomer getting the lay of the land, Hong Kong was quite a surprise. “I was amazed to find so many beautiful green trails and hikes,” she says. “I’m very active. It’s part of my DNA. I’m into tennis and badminton, I hike a lot, I swim a lot. It’s important to keep your serotonin levels up and it helps with the creative process. I love to be out in nature.”
GREEN DRAGONS HK Starting out in Hong Kong, Suzanne was lucky enough to find friendly neighbours willing to help her ease into a new life. Which is where her first brush with dragon boating came in. Despite a slight fear of the deep ocean, Suzanne accepted when some of those same neighbours invited her to join a team. “I needed a community and people around me. I was feeling isolated. I’d never heard of dragon boating but I went for a trial. I still wasn’t sure, but the team, it was all women, was very welcoming, so I stuck with it. I had a huge knot in my stomach for weeks.” The cold weather waves of winter training were daunting, but Suzanne got over it. It got her outdoors – and it opened her eyes to the depth and breadth of Hong Kong’s plastic problem. Then Typhoon Hato hit in 2017. Suzanne responded to a call-out for a beach clean-up in Stanley after the storm and was blown away by what she saw. “It was just horrific. I was

in tears, and realised what a huge issue this is. These days when I do book talks in schools, I tell kids it’s like Mother Nature used all her force and threw all this trash back at us. If everyone would go to a beach after a typhoon…” When it happened again a week later, Suzanne decided to leverage her dragon boat community act on reducing the amount of plastic that makes its way to the ocean. Who better to stump for safeguarding the water than the people on it all the time? So Suzanne reached out to Plastic Free Seas for advice on creating Green Dragons HK. The organisation’s volunteers now strive for a plasticfree dragon boat community by eliminating single-use plastics from training and festival events – and advocating for water stations with event organisers. COVID was a step back; many prevention measures recommitted us to single-use plastic, so Suzanne admits there’s an element of starting over at play now. “There’s a lot of apathy. I can be standing there talking to a team and looking at someone sipping from a single-use bottle.” But Green Dragons HK isn’t giving up, despite the challenges.
WILLY THE GREEN DRAGON Suzanne was sure there was more she could do, and back in 2019 she struck upon Willy the Green Dragon. Kids are LIFE ON L ANTAU | F E B RUARY / M A RC H 2 0 24 17

the key to a greener future so she decided she had to talk to them. “Children need strong messages. The Green Dragon stories are based on facts, true events and Hong Kong history. It’s another tool to get the plastic message out and give kids a voice.” Suzanne kept the self-published Green Dragon (www.dracoviridi.com) series on the down low for a long time. She was confident in her imagination and ability to craft a story kids would respond to because she started writing as a child herself, as a creative outlet, and made up stories for her son. Oliver Jeffers’ (Lost and Found) brand of simple but moving stories served as a guide, and Suzanne admits she got lucky during the publishing process. But she was still on a steep learning curve. “Luckily, Hongkongers are very generous with their time, and they’ll happily introduce you to people you might need to know. The first book, The Green Dragon, was very well received and it’s still the best seller.” The Green Dragon is an introduction to Willy, his friends and an overview of the impact plastics have on Hong Kong’s seas. Having published one book, Suzanne thought – “Great. Mission accomplished” – but the weekend picnic waste she saw when hiking in Aberdeen Country Park lit a new fire. “Everything is plastic: the tablecloths, the seat covers, the barbeque trays. Even though there are enormous bins, right there, everyone just leaves everything behind for someone else to deal with. By Sunday night the wild animals have got to it. It’s a mess.” Needless to say, The Green Dragon and the ‘Oh No’ Bird, The Green Dragon and the Rumbly Island, and The Green Dragon and the Angry Monkeys followed. The series, illustrated by Caroline Lewington and Janaka Srimal, reveals how Kowloon reservoir brought wild monkeys to the city, why buffalo in Mui Wo wander into shops, and how a ballet dancing wild boar can’t control his appetite due to the vast amount of garbage left in the country park.
THE NINE MIGHTY DRAGONS 2023 was a great first year for Willy the Green Dragon, with Suzanne reaching 2,382 students on book talks at local schools. And she’s not stopping there. Year of the Dragon, 2024 will welcome the first two volumes in her new 10-part series of children’s books also starring Willy and inspired by the nine dragons – gau-lung, or “Kowloon” for newbies. Appropriately titled The Nine Mighty Dragons, Willy will meet a new dragon in each – beginning on Lantau – and examine a specific environmental theme. The adventure-filled fantasy stories take place in various “lands” that will closely resemble real countries across the world. children, aiming to entertain and empower kids without overwhelming them. For now, with seven books complete, Suzanne is ready to get to the business of layout. She has a way to go, but she’s excited about this next, erm, chapter of her second career. The question must be asked however: is it worth the effort? Is there hope for us and our collective plastic obsession? “I have to think so, otherwise it’s just too depressing,” she finishes, looking slightly scandalised at the idea we’ll all be sinking in PET a generation from now. “I think the imbalance between people who care and who don’t – or who care sometimes – now favours the former. But you know, in Victorian times everyone felt overwhelmed by all the horse poop during horse-and-carriage days. Everyone was sure there was nothing they could do about it, but things change. I hope that’s where we are now.” She pauses. “I hope these books are obsolete one day.”

THE RED PACKETS Over CNY, children look forward to receiving lai see, those little red packets filled with a crisp dollar note. They need to know how to accept lai see politely – with both hands, head bowed and a simple doh jeh (thank you) – and they must never open the packet in front of the giver. The origin of lai see-giving, the legend of Ang Pow, is a fun one for kids to learn. It harks back to the Song Dynasty, when an evil dragon terrorised the people of a village called Chang-Chieu. No one was able to drive off the dragon or kill it. The villagers lived in fear until one day a young man named Ang Pow slayed the beast with his magic sabre. Out of gratitude and in the hope of warding off evil in the future, the elders of Chang-Chieu gave Ang Pow a red envelope filled with money. TOP TIP: Children should not give lai see – it would be considered insulting by the adult recipient – kids receive only. For young kids, HK$10 is acceptable. For older kids and young adults, it’s HK$20 to HK$50. Lai see is a blessing, a wish for good luck; it’s not about giving a large amount of money.
FLOWERS AND FOOD Kids love the social aspect of CNY; the way families and friends get together to celebrate at each other’s homes. The dressing up required for these occasions – in new (ideally red or gold) clothes – is the icing on the cake.

e’re getting ready to usher in Chinese New Year (CNY), the Year of the Dragon on February 10, and there’s a lot for kids to look forward to – three days off school, family gatherings, new clothes, lucky red packets… There’s also a lot of fun stuff for them to learn if they are to get the most out of the holiday. First off, at CNY, we wish each other good luck, happiness and wealth. Kids will need to be able to say Gong Hei Fat Choy (pronounced Gong-hee-faatchoy) in Cantonese, and Gong Xi Fa Cai (pronounced Gong-she-faa-tsai) in Mandarin. Both are wishes for a prosperous New Year.
At CNY, everything from the food we eat to the flowers we buy has a special meaning, and children are often intrigued by all the traditions. Teach them, for instance, that certain flowers have “super powers” and that this is why we gift them at CNY. Miniature kumquat trees, with their tiny orange fruits, bring the recipient money; peonies bring true love; bamboo stems good luck. And why do we buy live potted plants at this time of year rather than fresh-cut flowers? Because potted plants symbolise growth and fresh starts. Tell children that the family will have a lucky year if a flower blooms in their home on Chinese Lunar New Year’s Day, and they will watch excitedly, waiting to see if it happens. Children are also delighted to learn that the dishes we make or have made for us at CNY represent blessings for the year to come. We eat spring rolls because they look like bars of gold, and are therefore a wish for prosperity and wealth. And we eat dumplings, shaped like ancient gold and silver ingots, for the same reason. If you are making dumplings with your kids, place a coin in one of them – teach them that whoever picks that dumpling can expect good luck in the coming year. Teach kids that eating steamed fish is an absolute must at CNY since it symbolises surplus and wealth. It’s unlucky to flip the fish – we eat one side of it for dinner and the rest the next day in order to prolong the surplus and make sure the coming year is prosperous. Why don’t we eat the head and tail? This is a reminder to finish everything you start and to wish for positive results. A whole steamed chicken represents a harmonious and united family, and it’s another CNY dinner staple. Teach kids that eating the chicken wings will help them succeed (fly higher), and eating the bones will help them achieve their goals. You can also explain why we eat extra-long “longevity noodles” at CNY – the longer the noodles, the longer our life will be. We must not cut our noodles for obvious reasons, but we are free to slurp! TOP TIP: When celebrating at home, a good way to involve the kids is to have them set out the traditional candy trays – eight varieties of dried fruit (or sweets) – to ensure everyone’s CNY gets off to a sweet start. They can also fill up bowls of oranges (for good health and long life), tangerines (for fruitful, lasting relationships) and persimmons (for happiness and wealth).
THE ZODIAC ANIMALS CNY is based on the lunar rather than the Gregorian calendar, which is why Chinese Lunar New Year’s Day can fall any time between January 21 and February 20, but what’s more interesting to kids is that in the Chinese zodiac calendar, each year has an animal as its symbol. 2024 ushers in the Year of the Dragon, one of 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac, the others being the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Children love the ancient folk story that explains how these creatures made the final cut to be immortalised in the zodiac: The Jade Emperor called a Great Race, decreeing that the first 12 animals to swim across a fast-flowing river would each have a year named in their honour. Thirteen animals lined up on the riverbank; however, the cat was pushed into the water by the rat, and was excluded from the final line-up. Once children have grasped that each year is affiliated with one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac, they will want to find out which animal heads up their own birth year. (Google it.) Kids find it entertaining to learn that people are thought to display certain characteristics unique to their zodiac animal, for example Roosters are practical and honest, Dogs are loyal and hardworking, while 2024’s thunder of Dragons are wise, fearless and talented. Famous Dragon Year people include Rihanna, Michael Cera and Bruce Lee. RISHIKESH’S BIGGEST TEMPLE IS MIGHT Y Trayambakeshwar, built as a 13-storey home for Lord Shiva more than 800 years ago. ASHRAMS PEPPER THE TOWN as densely as Starbucks in Seattle, and picturesque Swarg Ashram (Heavenly Abode) is one of the oldest. Situated on the left bank of The Ganges, it’s the spiritual “ground zero” of Rishikesh, positively jammed with temples, meditation centres, Sanskrit schools and stores.
OUTWARD BOUND IS HUGELY POPULAR in Rishikesh. There’s trekking, white-water rafting, rock climbing, cliff jumping, rappelling and bungee jumping on tap; after all this is the glorious Gateway to the Himalayas.

THE WORLD CAPITAL OF YOGA: Rishikesh catapulted to Western fame when the Beatles dropped by to visit Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram (now closed). There are in fact three Rishikesh essentials: yoga practice, a “holy” dip in The Ganges and having your palm read.

STRAWBERRY CHEESECAKE Serves 8 200g digestive biscuits
½ lemon, zest only
100g unsalted butter
3tbsp lemon juice
3 sheets of leaf gelatine
500g strawberries
142ml single cream
142ml double cream
300g full-fat soft cheese
1 medium egg white
100g golden caster sugar Crush the biscuits with a rolling pin, tip into a bowl and stir in the butter. Transfer the mixture to a loose-bottomed 24cm round cake tin, at least 5cm deep, and press down to make an even layer. Leave to chill. Soak the gelatine leaves in cold water for 5 minutes. Pour the single cream into a pan and bring just to the boil, then take off the heat. Stir the gelatine leaves into the cream. Leave to cool. Next, beat the cheese in a bowl with the sugar, lemon zest and juice. Mix in the cream and gelatine mixture and 300g strawberries. In another bowl, whip the double cream so it falls in soft peaks, then fold it into the cheese mixture. Repeat with the egg white. Pour the cheese mixture into the cake tin, smooth it down and chill for 2-3 hours until set. To serve, remove the cheesecake from the tin and pile on the additional strawberries.

CHOCOLATE-DIPPED STRAWBERRIES Makes 9 100g dark chocolate, roughly chopped 9 large strawberries
Cut a strip of baking parchment and leave to one side. To melt the dark chocolate, fill a small pan with 2cm water and bring to a simmer. Put the chocolate in a heatproof bowl and rest it on top of the pan, ensuring the bowl isn’t touching the water. Stir the chocolate to gradually melt it. Or, melt the chocolate in 20 second blasts in the microwave, stirring after each blast until melted. Put the melted chocolate in a small deep bowl. Gently hold the strawberries by the leafy top and dip into the chocolate, just over halfway up. Tap off any excess chocolate and put on the parchment to set.
