DMR SCHOOL OF BALLET: WHERE LITTLE DANCERS GROW BIG DREAMS For more than 40 years, DMR School of Ballet has been a beloved part of life in DB. Founded in 1984 by Ms Dawnna M. Wayburne, and now owned and run by Ms Rhianna and Ms Erica since 2021, DMR is much more than a dance school, it’s a place where generations of local children have put on their dance shoes, made friends and discovered the joy of movement. Through regular term classes at the DB North studio, Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) exam preparation and highlights like the Annual Performance and the Disneyland Parade, DMR offers many chances for young dancers to learn, shine and celebrate their progress together. “I want dance class to feel like the kids’ happy place – fun, friendly and full of good energy,” says Ms Rhianna, co‑owner and ballet, modern and tap teacher. “At the same time, we gently build in focus and discipline because that’s how the children really grow. At DMR, it’s all about enjoying dance while learning to work hard and shine.”

ONLY CHESS

He’s eight, he loves maths and he’s already a Hong Kong chess champion. Meet Shayne Meng Xiangyi, a young player with big ambitions and a world of chess ahead of him. Elizabeth Kerr reports PHOTOS BY Andrew J.C. Spires & courtesy of Shayne Meng Xiangyi

T

here is nothing out of the ordinar y about eightyear-old Shayne Meng Xiangyi. It’s a normal weekday after school, and he’s showing off his typical kids’ bedroom in his Discover y Bay home. His desk and bookshelves are over flowing with trophies, medals and awards, and books are crammed into ever y nook. What is out of the ordinar y is that Shayne’s hardware is mostly chess prizes from nearly 100 tournaments he’s been in since he star ted playing when he was just five. Well, chess and a few for maths. They go together after all. Af ter the impromptu tour, which includes pointing out a framed photograph of his idol, Chinese grandmaster and 2023-24 World Chess Champion Ding Liren, he sits down at the dining table, not fidgety but maybe a little uncer tain. Shayne is currently the Hong Kong SAR U8 Junior Chess Champion, a title he picked up in Januar y. That win was his ticket to a summer spent flying all over for various prestige tournaments, star ting with the FIDE World Cadets Cup U8 to U12 in Georgia last June. “The Georgia in Europe. Not the Georgia state,” he says matter-of-fac tly. As Hong Kong’s sole representative, Shayne placed 18th among 118 U8 players from around the world, setting a new best-ever result for a Hong Kong player in the event. Shayne was born in DB, where his parent s relocated af ter years on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, looking for a bet ter pace of life. They’re elsewhere in the flat, giving Shayne a lit tle bit of space. His independence shows in how he warms up to a chat about just star ting Grade 4 at Discover y College, his strong subjec t s (Chinese and maths), and how he’s “horrible” at ar t. There’s some ribbing about his disastrous singing and terrible drawing, which makes him giggle like the lit tle boy he is. He talks about playing ping-pong when he hangs out with friends (“I’m okay at it, I guess”) but ask him about chess and he sparks to even more life. 16

AROUND DB / OCTOBER 2026

“I learnt Chinese chess first, and really liked it. I was in the hospital, and my mom brought in some board games,” he recalls (he had pneumonia). That led to what Shayne calls standard international chess, and the discover y of Ding online somewhere (“I think so, but I’m not sure.”). He was instantly engrossed by the game. Next came Caissa Hong Kong Chess Club because, as Shayne says of his parents, “Oh, they don’t know how to play.” There’s laughter of agreement from the next room. Mum and dad are big fans of staying out of Shayne’s spotlight, admit ting they suppor t his passion in whatever way they can, at his request, and they will as long as he enjoys it. His love of chess is more crucial than winning medals. To say Shayne is out of the ordinary is inaccurate; it may be more like extraordinary. He talks like any eightyear-old. He “umms” and pauses, and frequently gives politely clipped “yes” responses but ask him what it is about a millennium-old strategy game that appeals to him and it opens the floodgates. “It ’s all calculations, which is why I like math too. And I like making my brain feel tired,” he begins, before launching into an explanation of his preference for the s tandard game. “ There’s a big dif ference in the board and the pieces bet ween Chinese chess and international chess. It has an ex tra piece. Chinese chess doesn’t have a Queen at all, and the King has ver y limited squares. So does the bishop, and pawns move for ward, but when they cross half the board, they can move sideways, but only one square.” Barely taking a breath, he downplays the value of the Queen, and talks traps and s talemates. He prefers a slow game to f lashy rapid and blit z s t yles. Shayne is ver y serious about his chess, but he has an understated sense of humour that makes it easy for him to poke fun at himself. The spoils of his

SHAYNE’S CRAZY CHESS SUMMER

vic tories from the summer just passed are on the table too, and he details what the medals represent: 18th place at the FIDE World Cadets Cup in Georgia; 10th place at the Asian Youth Chess Championships in Shenzhen; first place at Hong Kong’s Asian Rapid Chess Championship; second place at the Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship in Hainan with a third finish in rapid and a 10th in blitz. “See,” he says, rolling his eyes. “I told you I'm not good at speed chess.” Shayne may be young, but his ambitions are already firm. His goal is to be a chess grandmaster and world champion. He’s taking some cues from Ding, who star ted his climb to chess dominance in U10 tournament s and who Shayne has met t wice, in Singapore and in Hong Kong; but there are a lot of steps bet ween where he is and where he want s to go. He’s beaten countless players older and more experienced than he, but he brushes that of f with a generous, “I beat an older man from Italy, at a tournament in Thailand, but older and experienced doesn’t mean any thing to your level of play.” Shayne is playing with some of China’s best, but knows he can be bet ter. “I’m definitely not the t ype of person who just likes at tacking on the board. I'm pret t y defensive, but I'm also pret t y aler t. I still have to understand these positions, so my coach is working on it. We're also working on playing a lit tle bit faster.” His coach is Netherlands native and international master Mat thew Tan, who ironically didn’t want to place five-year- old Shayne in a regular class, 18

AROUND DB / OCTOBER 2026

arguing he was too young and should be having fun with the kindergar ten-aged players. Scheduling made that trick y so he relented with “sink or swim” resignation, only to be amazed by Shayne’s talent, drive and passion – which he indulges ever y where, including on family vacations. He’s dragged his parent s into more than one Barcelona bar or Melbourne park to play anyone who’s around. Out side fac tors and oppor tunit y will play roles, but Mat thew has no doubt Shayne has the potential for grandmaster status. “He’s way ahead of where I was at his age, and back then I was regarded as a big talent. He has more talent than I had,” Mat thew adds by telephone. “We’re just going to keep working, and make sure that he enjoys the road that he’s on. If he can stay motivated to continue, I have high hopes for him.” For the time being Shayne is focusing on defending his title, sor t of. He’ll be moving up to U10 at the Hong Kong Juniors in Januar y, and this time he’ll be on the younger end of the field. It ’s easy to forget he’s eight when he talks chess, but then he get s a kid’s gleam in his eye when he shows of f a prized assor tment of chess boards from dif ferent par t s of the world. A South African edition with the Big Five for pieces, an Uzbek version construc ted out of traditional clothing. Plent y of kids have plans brewing for the future at eight, be it for pop stardom, or medicine, or the classic firefighter. What are Shayne’s? He barely pauses before replying. “I don’t have any. Only chess.” And checkmate.

WELCOME TO ONE TOSCANA Brand-new one- to four-bedroom units make their debut at One Toscana, DB’s latest landmark development, where thoughtful home staging meets prestige sea, mountain and park views. Martin Wray reports PHOTOGRAPHY BY Andrew J.C. Spires & courtesy of HKRI

unlight, ocean and an unobs tr uc ted view of Vic toria Har bour provide a hear t- quickening fir s t impres sion of the on-site unit at One Tosc ana 2, where my tour of DB’s newly launched Tosc ana projec t begins. A s my hear t set tles, other det ails come into focus: high ceilings, cinematic cur ved windows and all the luxur y an imaginative interior designer c an create with over 1,70 0 square feet. Only 14 of these four-bedroom, three-ensuite units exist. Occupying an entire floor and accessed by a private lift lobby, they offer a degree of privacy that is increasingly difficult to find. The living and dining room stretches more than 9.5 metres, opening onto a generous 3-in-1 balcony through large sliding glass doors. Beyond, the harbour view takes centre stage. The mas ter bedroom enjoys the same outlook, fr amed by those dis tinc tive cur ved windows. In the ensuite, a bathtub sit s agains t a pic ture window, while his-and - her s sinks add a pr ac tic al touch. The f lat also includes an enclosed kitchen with a double sink and built-in wine fridge. The large sea-view units are just one par t of the Toscana offering. Across the two phases, One Toscana delivers one- to four-bedroom homes ranging from 425 to 1,683 square feet. The variety makes the development relevant to a broad mix of residents, from single buyers and young families to those looking for an investment proper ty. From a f lat overlooking Par k Tosc ana, I am sur prised by the sheer sc ale of the development. The Tosc ana mas ter plan c alls for around 1,40 0 unit s built acros s 650,0 0 0 square feet of land, an area larger than Hong Kong St adium. Today, 490 unit s are being of fered acros s the t wo phases. 24

The more premium One Tosc ana 2 includes these outlooks, alongside dr amatic, unobs tr uc ted views of the Vic toria Har bour Gateway, fr amed by the iconic landmar ks of Centr al and Wes t Kowloon. Inside, the homes share a set of thoughtful features: extra-tall windows, glass-railed balconies, airconditioning, built-in induc tion hobs, combination steam ovens and refrigerators. Most units have unusually high ceilings, with some reaching more than 3.4 metres floor-to-floor. Stylish French kitchen appliances by De Dietrich are paired with sanitar y ware from VADO (UK ), and Duravit and Bette (Germany). The interiors of the staged homes of fer a dif ferent perspec tive on the development, showing how the spaces might work in ever yday life. In Flat D, 11/F, Tower 9, a three - bedroom home with one ensuite, the designer s have adopted the increasingly popular Japandi aes thetic, uniting the tr anquillit y of Japanese ‘wabi-sabi’ with minimalis t Nordic design. Timber fur niture and sof t, natur al tones give the living room and mas ter bedroom a war m, relaxed feel. Bedroom 2 continues the theme with a tea cor ner, ink-wash paintings and c alligr aphy, creating a c alming backdrop for quiet moment s. The third bedroom is designed as a parent- child ‘play and s tudy space’, with room for children to read, create and grow. Together with the greener y out side the window, it feels like a space that could evolve with a family. The t wo - bedroom Flat C, 11/F, Tower 9 t akes a dif ferent approach. Another scale model to check out shows DB Times Square, the proposed transpor t interchange complex across from Auberge Discover y Bay. The gover nment has approved it s cons truc tion and according to the developer, the projec t will provide par king for over 160 vehicles. The changes are not limited to infr as tr uc ture. On an aes thetic level, the Tosc ana development has already beautified the area leading into the tunnel toward DB Nor th Plaza. This includes bonsai-like f lowering trees and an upgr ade to the landsc aped gardens at the roundabout near Chianti bus s top. A new brick path leads up from there into Par k Tosc ana. With each new proper t y development phase, DB resident s get a new par k. This includes Caperidge’s Peninsula Garden and Siena’s Central Par k. And now, Par k Toscana, a 160,0 0 0 -square foot greenspace designed by Adrian L. Nor man. The par k features s treams and water features, walking trails, sit ting- out areas, outdoor exercise s tations, ar t ins tallations, grassy fields and children’s playgrounds. Living in a subtropical climate, it is easy to take a well-maintained landscape for granted. But in DB, ever y tree, flower and blade of grass was planned before being planted. DB has always had excellent gardener s who conscientiously maintain this foliage long af ter the sales push and who deser ve credit for the pos tcard-per fec t gardens they maintain. Our home is, af ter all, a manicured ur ban space, and has been since long before phases began being named af ter regions in Italy. The Italian influence at DB predates One Toscana by decades, but it is the fir s t phase to take a single region ( Toscana is the Italian name for Tuscany) and follow it all the way through to the mar ble, the arches and the planting.

THE PRICE OF FOUR-WHEELED FREEDOM Owning a car in Hong Kong is expensive, frustrating and entirely illogical – but it might just be the best decision you ever make. Andrew J.C. Spires reports PHOTOGRAPHY BY Andrew J.C. Spires

H

aving a car in Hong Kong is a bit like having a dog. They’re expensive, you don’t need one and they create ex tra work, but they make life exponentially bet ter. Here is a quick guide to finding the best car, the best place to park it, and the exuberant cost s and paper work needed to live the petrolhead dream.

cheap in Hong Kong and are definitely the best option. Take a look on Facebook Marketplace, 28car.com (the website looks like it ’s been made by a par tially sighted chimp, but it has a lot of vehicles) or carro.co/hk which provides warranties, a five- day money-back guarantee and peace of mind with cars that have undergone inspec tion.

Parking is the number one issue for car owners in Hong Kong, and especially DBers who aren’t allowed private vehicles any where near their homes. Discover y Bay resident s have t wo options – Sunny Bay and Tung Chung. Whilst Sunny Bay is the closest option with a HK$2,50 0 monthly fee and a regular bus ser vice, Tung Chung is also a viable option. There are a smat tering of parking spaces rented out by the owners of village houses on Tung Chung Road, with prices star ting from just HK$1,50 0 a month. Consider jumping on a Hello Bike to make get ting to the car quicker whilst adding in a lit tle exercise!

Whilst Facebook can of fer up some incredible deals, I recommend getting an independent mechanic to look over any car before you hand over the money. Don’t be put of f by high mileage – if the car has been regularly ser viced, any thing that can go wrong probably already has and will have been fixed.

Once you’ve found the per fec t parking spot, you then have to consider the car. Will you choose comfor t over speed, fuel economy over fun, t wo or seven seat s? Second-hand cars are incredibly 28

AROUND DB / OCTOBER 2026

If you’re buying a car over seven years old, you’ll need to fac tor in the yearly M.O.T. The inspec tion cost s HK$585 and you can get this done yourself at one of the 20 Transpor t Depar tment Designated Testing Centres dot ted all over Hong Kong. If you think your car won’t pass, you can request a garage to carr y out a pre-inspec tion, and also give the car a ser vice, which is always a good idea. The mechanic will also take your car for the M.O.T. inspec tion. Prices for this hover at around HK$2,50 0 to HK$3,0 0 0.

PARKING ON TUNG CHUNG ROAD STARTS AT HK$1,500 A MONTH

Nex t up, once you take possession of the car, you have 72 hours to put it in your name. Before you do this, you’ll need a Cer tificate of Insurance. There are lot s of brokerages in Hong Kong to help you with this, or you can go direc tly to the insurer. Make sure you bring a copy of the Cer tificate of Insurance with you to the Transpor t Depar tment. Download form TD25 and get the existing owner to fill in their bit, you fill out yours, then you can simply walk into the governmental of fice (the big one is on Queensway but there are others) and pay the HK$1,0 0 0. The Transpor t Depar tment says you both need to at tend, but that ’s not the case. They will give you the new vehicle registration cer tificate there and then. As well as the M.O.T., you also have to pay annual vehicle road tax. The price for this varies on engine capacit y. Any thing lower than a 1.5 litre engine pays HK$5,074, rising to HK$7,498 for an engine up to 2.5 litres. Over that and fees can climb up to a whopping HK$14,694 per year. Elec tric cars don’t escape the tax but are charged at a much lower rate, the highest of which is HK$5,114 for the biggest, beefiest bat ter y. So now you own the car and are fully up to date with all the paper work. You’ve paid the fees and you can star t to enjoy yourself. Not quite… Hong Kong leads the world in having the priciest petrol at the pump. Gas currently sit s at a staggering HK$31 to HK$33 per litre. A neat hack to lower these cost s centres on aggressive competition among fuel retailers such as Shell, Caltex, Sinopec and PetroChina. Download their loyalt y apps to receive substantial instant discount s at the pump. Just show the QR code screen when filling up. To give you an idea of how fuel cost s can add up, my Mini Cooper S, with a lit tle 44 -litre fuel tank, cost s HK$1,40 0 to fill up. I had to change my under wear the first time I saw the numbers climbing. If you plan to drive any great distances, you’ll need to pay toll fees for the tunnels. The easiest way to do this is to apply online for the HKeToll sticker, 30

AROUND DB / OCTOBER 2026

SUNNY BAY IS THE CLOSEST PARKING OPTION WITH A HK$2,500 MONTHLY FEE

which, once registered to your vehicle, can autopay any tolls linked to your credit card. This also carries a cost, albeit a small HK$50. Tolls in Hong Kong range from HK$20 to HK$60 depending on what time you use them. You’re probably asking yourself why anyone would want to pay all that money, just to dodge dangerous taxi drivers and sit in traf fic. If you’re any thing like me, driving is one of life’s great joys. Get yourself a fun lit tle car and you’ll put a smile on your face and a skip in your step. If you’ve lived in Hong Kong for a decent amount of time, it can star t to feel quite small but having a car can open up the cit y like a blossoming flower. We now take day trips to Kadoorie Farm, Tai Lam Chung Reser voir and beaches all over Hong Kong. There is no greater feeling than climbing back into your own car af ter a long day exploring, get ting the aircon cranked up and knowing you, not the bus captain, are the master of your route and ETA! We have a dog, and previously needed to take a taxi if we wanted to take him any where exciting. A trip to Kam Tin Countr y Club by a pet-friendly Uber runs to HK$60 0 for a return trip. Even without a pup in tow, taking public transpor t to beautiful spot s like Sai Kung easily takes an hour-and-a-half and involves changing transpor tation. With your own wheels, you can be there in 50 minutes and have fun in the process – get the tunes turned up, the roof down and enjoy the ride. Sometimes, life isn’t about being sensible. A sensible person wouldn’t spend upwards of HK$40K a year just to go for an evening drive with the kids and dog. Car ownership in Hong Kong, and especially DB, is a foolhardy pursuit akin to boat ownership. But then so is owning a dog. You struggle to go on holiday, you can’t leave them alone for ex tended periods, groomers are expensive, they need endless walks, high vet bills… the list is endless. But I adore my dog and I wouldn’t change him for the world. I also love my car, I just wish I could park it a bit closer to home.

Today, Adi is taking his next big step at Hong Kong University, where he is pursuing the prestigious and highly competitive International Business and Global Management (IBGM) programme, with sights set on a future in finance or entrepreneurship. DC’S SUPPORTIVE CULTURE Achieving IB per fec tion requires ex traordinar y personal drive, but Adi is quick to credit Discover y College for laying the groundwork for his success. “Our teachers weren’t just skilled – they genuinely gave ever y single s tudent their full care and attention,” he says. “That personal suppor t made all the difference for my friends and me.”

motivation and genuine suppor t. In the classroom, Ms Virrett, his Film Studies teacher, was a constant source of encouragement. Though Adi was initially hesitant to take Film Studies, Ms Virrett recognised his potential and encouraged him to pursue it. Adi recalls the numerous times she stayed by his side, of fering continuous help and suppor t throughout both MYP and DP. DC provided Adi with more than just academic rigour; it offered a platform to develop as a holistic leader. Throughout his DP year s, he ac tively took on key leadership roles – representing the school on various s p o r t s tea m s, s e r v i ng a s a S c h o o l A m b a s s a d o r, sit ting on the Student Council and t aking on the responsibilit y of House Capt ain. Recognising the imp or t ance of wellb eing, Adi als o co -found e d a peer-led mental health initiative and led several cocurricular activities.

WITH THE MODEL UNITED NATIONS TEAM

“T he balance, dis cipline and s of t s k ills (of collaboration, communication and leadership) that I developed through these roles are equipping me for my personal and professional life just as much as my academic results,” Adi notes. ADI’S FORMULA FOR SUCCESS Adi has some tips for students hoping to stay on top of the IB workload: Co nsis te nc y b eat s hard wor k: “T he mos t c r ucial ad vice to succee d in almos t any t hing is not jus t to wor k hard but to be regular. Academic s isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon. For my demanding subjects, Math A A HL, Physics HL and Econ HL, cramming my review in the last few weeks would never have been enough. Being consistent is what mat ters: regular practice, dedicating two to three evenings to review content, attempting past papers, etc. That had the most impact.” Stop waiting, do it: “Many folks wait for the ‘per fect’ time to do their wor k. There is n’t one. Don’t procrastinate, even if something is due a week later, instead of planning to do it all in a few hours, spread out your work – maybe 20 minutes a day. You’ll get it done faster and with a higher quality, while leaving time to hang out.” A s k f o r h e l p e a r l y : “E v e n i f r e a c h i n g o u t f e e l s uncomfor table, find a way to do it. Teachers want to see you succeed and are always eager to guide you.” Adi also has some tips for parents: he shares what his parents did to help him stay focused, balanced and motivated:

WITH FRIENDS, OPENING LETTERS OF APPRECIATION FROM TEACHERS

Give space and trust: “Trust your children to manage their wor kload without micromanaging. However, if you see them struggling to keep up, help them. Maybe arrange a decent timetable, where they can split their work, or get them a tutor.” Prioritise, balance and sacrifice together: “To protect my focus, my parent s made per sonal s acr ifices – turning down social invitations, dinners and weekend event s, so I never felt lef t out. At the same time, when I spent long hours studying, they encouraged me to take a break with them, going outdoors for an hour to play badminton, rugby, or take an evening walk. The exac t ac tion you t ake varies of cour se, but essentially, attempt to recognise what your kid needs – a break, physical activity, less distractions – and be encouraging but not ver y strict.” Adi sums up with a final message for student s currently taking the IB: His advice? “Have faith in yourself. No one regrets putting in hard work. Either you achieve something life-changing, or you learn something valuable that stays with you forever. Do the best you can with what you have, don’t worr y too much because life isn’t always going to follow your plan, and that's okay. Be resilient but also stressfree. Good luck!”

SOLE NESTING SITE Sham Wan, Lamma Island PROTECTED AREA: 0.5-hectare beach & surrounding waters

HK’S ENDANGERED GREEN TURTLES

RESTRICTED PERIOD: April 1–October 31 UNAUTHORISED ENTRY: HK$50,000 fine

DB sighting by Kevin Laurie in 2018

SIGHTINGS

NESTING TRENDS

Among the 5 sea turtle species recorded in HK, the green turtle is the most spotted & the only species that breeds locally

Hawksbill

Olive Ridley

Green Turtle

Leatherback

Loggerhead

Most sightings are of foraging juveniles in eastern & southern waters (warmer months) In a 2002–2024 study, green turtles made up ~77% of strandings (171 out of ~223 identified cases)

1970s

30–50 nests per season (4–13 nesting females)

1998–2003 ~10 wild nestings recorded

NESTING HABITS

POST 2004

Very rare (last major nesting 2012)

POST 2018

Only 1 wild nesting reported

Green turtles travel thousands of kilometres from their feeding grounds to mate in shallow waters off their natal beach

The same female can only lay eggs once every few years

MAJOR THREATS

Fishery bycatch & entanglement

Vessel strikes

Pollution & habitat Human disturbance disturbance at nesting sites

GOVERNMENT PROTECTION

AFCD CONSERVATION

HK$100,000 MAXIMUM FINE for hunting, wilful disturbance, possession, or sale

Egg protection & incubation

HK$10,000,000 MAXIMUM FINE for import, export or possession

Ongoing monitoring, rescue & satellite tracking

1,000 hatchlings hatched & released since 1998

After nesting, the female turtle returns to the sea, leaving its eggs on the beach

WHY IT MATTERS HK supports a remnant population – one of the last in southern China. Protection of Sham Wan & regional cooperation are critical for recovery

REPORT SIGHTINGS If you spot a green turtle in Lantau waters, call the AFCD hotline (1823)
