INT. NATHANIEL’S BEDROOM - DAY
NATHANIEL CLADRIFF, lies motionless on his bed. The curtains are drawn in his room and the small bit of light bleeding through the dark fabric covering the windows is only enough to make out his profile. Sunken in, washed out, and scruffy. The television blares from the head of the bed. PROGRAM NARRORATOR Thirty years since the final chapter of the wizarding phenomenon E! Then come the tabloids, the clips of camera smashing antics. ...A boy thrust into the spotlight and then shunned by the Hollywood community. Type cast, to the world he was the wizard Parry Hotter; never again to be seen as NATHANIEL, a normal boy and capable actor. With no work coming his way he became a recluse and was last reported to have relocated back to England. (The voice on the TV fades into the background) NATHANIEL’s phone lies on the ground, a bright red light flashing at the top. Clearly he has been ignoring calls for days. Turning over as slowly as possible in bed, he leans over the side and picks up the phone. With a pained look he dails his voicemail. We hear aloud from the phone’s cradle two messages.
JEMMA Hi Natty, it’s Jemma. I, I haven’t heard from you in a while. I’m calling to see how you are. I worry, please call. I’m sponsoring a charity gala.. it might be a good way to get out of the house. Or maybe lunch if that’s too muchjust you and me? Call me, please? Beep. He erases the message. NATHANIEL’S MOTHER My baby boy. How are you Nathaniel, it’s me- mum. Me and your dad haven’t spoken to you since the top of the month. Are you doing well? We would love to see you. My love, I’m not doing well these days. I just haven’t responded to the medicine the way the doctors hoped.. I’m scared. Please call me soon. I love you, always. Beep. He erases the message. Then, looking for a moment at the phone he slowly dials a set of numbers. Ring, ringNATHANIEL’S MOTHER Nathaniel!? Is that you darling? NATHANIEL Yeah. Hi Mum. I got your message. NATHANIEL’S MOTHER It makes me so happy to hear your voice, INATHANIEL (Interupting) You’re getting worse then? I’ve been thinking about it and I want to help. NATHANIEL’S MOTHER You know I would never ask for money, but the bills are getting so large, I don’t know how much longer we’ll be able to keep up. NATHANIEL Money? You don’t need that. That’s what I’ve called to tell you. I think I’ve come up with a potion, (MORE) (CONTINUED)
NATHANIEL (cont’d) and combined with a spell I always used to cast I think we can take care of this. NATHANIEL’S MOTHER Nathaniel, please. I don’t want to be insensitive but you can’t be serious. NATHANIEL Why, why can’t I be serious!? You think money will help? My magic, that’s what will help you. If I’m so crazy then how am I about to do this! Immobulus! (Reaching to his side, he pulls out what we assume is a wand, he snaps it in the direction of a cat) If you were here you’d see I just rendered a creature totally immoble! (Looking back at the cat we see it is clearly asleep on a bookcase) NATHANIEL’S MOTHER (Weeping) Na-Nathaniel, please stop. I can’t hear this. I can’t watch you do this to yourself it hurts so much... NATHANIEL Obliviate(charm that he believes erases memories). (Nathaniel hangs up the phone)
