The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority approved a $66 million contract for construction of new facilities and site preparation for the 35-acre SkyCenter development at Tampa International Airport (TPA). SkyCenter is a new development located adjacent to the newly constructed consolidated rental car center at TPA and includes an office tower, connecting atrium, pedestrian bridge, and remote commercial curb and trail as well as a future hotel and other commercial real estate development opportunities. The 270,000 square foot (sf) 9-story office tower is projected at 30,000 sf per floor and is set to contain a conference center, dining cafe, fitness center, and an outdoor event space on the first level as well as connection to the atrium/pedestrian bridge and APM Station. The Authority will occupy three (3) stories of the new building and is relocating their offices and TPA employees as well as the nerve centers for all airport operations to the newly constructed SkyCenter office tower. This allows the airport to demolish its current offices next to the main terminal and the ability to repurpose the space to allow for more passengers in support of its vision. SkyCenter development is the central component of the second phase of the airport’s Master Plan, a three-phased capital program and vision to increase the airport’s annual capacity from 23 million passengers in 2014 to 34 million passengers yearly upon program completion.

Low flow plumbing fixtures were used in restrooms to reduce the domestic water usage. Electrical systems employed lighting fixtures such as light emitting diode (LED) and lighting control systems to reduce the energy usage. The lighting control system used day lighting strategies that reduce the output of lighting fixtures if the outdoor lighting is sufficient to maintain the desired lighting levels inside the building.
