SOUTH BRONX WATERFRONT TRANSFORMATION

URBAN DESIGN

Location: South Bronx, New York City, USA

Software Used: ArcGIS, Rhino, Grasshopper, Adobe Creative suite and Twin Motion

Designed by a team of three as part of a studio project. This project transforms the South Bronx waterfront into a network of selfsustaining islands, aiming to revitalize the area and enhance its resilience through sustainable urban development. It integrates renewable energy, advanced waste management, and urban agriculture to support New York City’s environmental and economic goals. Our strategy included robust community engagement and infrastructure investment to address historical neglect. We applied bioremediation techniques and sustainable construction practices to restore the ecological health of the waterfront.

As a part of the Urban Design Climate Workshop for Rio (27 March – 7 April) the project envisions the port of São Cristóvão as a nexus of sustainable urban agriculture and efficient transit systems, The project aims to elevate local employment in sustainable sectors, enhance mobility, and improve environmental conditions. As a team of two we focused on sustainable infrastructure and community-centric economic models it leverages existing agricultural setups for sustainable production. The design features artificial wetlands and advanced filtration to enhance biodiversity and control pollution by developing comprehensive micro-mobility networks to boost connectivity and reduce fossil fuel dependence.

My thesis project involves the urban redesign of Russell Market, a historic market established in 1927. This project aims to transform the market into a vibrant commercial and social hub while addressing current infrastructural and environmental challenges. The design reimagines Russell Market as a sustainable, functional space that respects its rich history while catering to contemporary urban needs. Objectives include enhancing accessibility, improving environmental conditions, and maintaining the market's role as a cultural and economic landmark. The building faced challenges such as poor lighting, ventilation, and waste management. The redesign of Russell Market is focused on revitalizing the area, boosting local commerce and improving the quality of life for vendors and visitors. The project aims to create a seamless interaction between pedestrians, vendors, and the surrounding urban fabric, reducing congestion and enhancing the market's usability. This thesis project not only addressed the practical needs of Russell Market but also highlighted its historical importance, creating a dynamic space where community, culture, and commerce intersect seamlessly. Engaging deeply in this project significantly sparked my interest in urban design, steering my professional aspirations towards specializing in urban redevelopment and planning.

SAVITHA KESHAV RESIDENCE

The residence is a family home designed to provide comfort, functionality, and aesthetic appeal for a family of four.The core design concept focuses on creating a harmonious balance between open, interactive spaces and private, tranquil areas that accommodate the lifestyle of a modern family. Objectives include maximizing natural light, incorporating sustainable materials, and ensuring fluid connectivity between indoor and outdoor environments. I led the project from conceptual design through to construction oversight, collaborating closely with structural engineers and contractors to ensure a cohesive execution of the vision.The construction utilized locally-sourced, sustainable materials such as natural stone for countertops, Baliapatam bricks for the walls, mangalore clay tiles for roofing and handcrafted clay tiles for flooring. The residence has significantly improved the family’s quality of life by providing them with a tailored living environment that supports their daily needs and environmental values.

GANESHA TEMPLE COLUMNATED CORRIDOR

URBAN DESIGN

The project was initiated to design a columnated passage around an existing temple, addressing the challenge of heated stone flooring which restricted devotees' access during hot weather. The solution involved the construction of a shaded walkway using mild steel columns, spanning 200 meters around the temple to ensure continuous and comfortable visitor access.As the project lead, I oversaw all phases of the design and construction process. My responsibilities included the architectural design, structural integration, and material selection. I specifically worked on selecting the column material, opting for high-grade mild steel due to its durability and ease of installation, which significantly reduced the execution time and cost by more than 50%. The columns were designed with intricate details that mirror the temple’s traditional stonework. The steel structure was a strategic choice, allowing for quick assembly and minimal ground impact. The corridor significantly improved the temple's usability during peak temperatures, enhancing devotee comfort and facilitating uninterrupted spiritual practices.

The project involves the interior design of a hotel office space in Bengaluru, designed to echo the rich cultural heritage of the region. Drawing inspiration from traditional Indian aesthetics, the design concept focuses on integrating ethnic motifs and artisanal crafts to create a culturally resonant space. Objectives included optimizing spatial efficiency, ensuring functional workflow, and providing a warm, welcoming atmosphere for hotel staff and visitors.The project required innovative space planning techniques to ensure functionality. Solutions included traditional fabrics, local marbles, handcrafted woodwork and built-in storage employed to optimize the limited space without compromising on style or functionality. As the lead designer, I was responsible for the conceptual development, spatial planning, and selection of materials. My role encompassed every aspect of the design process, from initial sketches to the final staging of the space.The design has not only improved the functionality of the space but also enhanced the overall aesthetic of the hotel, contributing to a cohesive guest experience.

This Hospital project being the first of its kind in Bengaluru involved designing a specialized medical facility dedicated to advanced maxillofacial procedures. As an intern, I contributed by drafting precise working drawings, collaborating closely with senior designers, structural engineers, and contractors. My responsibilities included ensuring that all construction documents were accurate and detailed, facilitating timely approvals and adherence to project timelines. My role included modifying designs in response to feedback from senior designers and engineering consultants, ensuring that the facility met both medical and architectural standards.
