Doing the Most Good Is Only Possible With Your Help For over 40 years, The Salvation Army of Livingston County has faithfully served the community out of a temporary building, hidden in a neighborhood of Howell, not easily accessible to those in need. The work The Salvation Army has done over the years is incredible, to say the least. The staff has sacrificed and always found a way to get the job done. However, the need is becoming too great and the facility is aged, extremely small, and in desperate need of repair.

The Salvation Army purchased a 30,000 sq ft vacant building on Grand River Ave. in Howell, MI several years ago due to the increasing need in the community.

Unfortunately, this building is unusable in its existing form and requires approximately $2 million of renovation to adequately serve as the new Church and Social Services home. We have already secured a $1 million matching grant, meaning we are already halfway there.

However, this campaign is not about a building. It’s about addressing the dire needs of our clients – body, mind, and soul – and doing so in the most dignified manner. People who come to us for support already feel forgotten, and when they arrive at our tiny, ill-equipped facility on Lake Street, it only perpetuates that feeling. Please help us provide a pathway to self-sufficiency through a pathway to human dignity.

Fall 2021-Spring 2022

QUIET PHASE focusing on existing donors and lead donors.

Communicate needs and clarify differences between The Salvation Army and its Thrift Stores. Present VISION and gain commitment from donors showing the impact their generosity will have on so many within the community.

PHASE 2:

Spring 2022 - Fall 2022

PUBLIC PHASE reaching out to the greater community. Continue to communicate and clarify MISSION, NEEDS and VISION. Finalize naming opportunities. Begin to plan for expanded programs and start to update construction plans and bids.

PHASE 3:

Fall 2022

BUILDING-RENOVATION PHASE celebrating the completion of Capital Campaign with official Ground Breaking at Grand River Ave building.

Initiate sale of Lake Street property and schedule construction and renovation of new building. Plan transition of staff and assets to new building and finalize plans of expanded programs and order of execution.

Imagine what it might be like to feel forgotten, invisible or that no one cares. It’s at this point, when it can feel like there is nowhere else to turn, that many of today’s clients first reach out to The Salvation Army for help.

A common response that we hear from those we serve -- including the homeless and those living at, or near, the poverty threshold -- is that they feel insignificant or forgotten by society.

You most likely haven’t experienced this level of hopelessness or desperation.

However, it is at this point that The Salvation Army Does the Most Good for those in need. Many charities, like The Salvation Army Corps Community Center located in Howell, operate out of very low-cost facilities that are dilapidated and run-down.

In turn, this sends a message to its clients that they are second-class citizens and that they are undeserving of more.

Dignity is best described as the rights of a person to be valued and respected. The Salvation Army provides services that not only address a client’s physical needs, but also reinforce that they are worthy and that they matter.

Background For over 150 years, The Salvation Army has been providing HOPE and SERVICE to those in need without discrimination. The Salvation Army exists to share the love of God and meet human needs by serving the WHOLE person, body, mind and spirit with integrity and respect. Our goal is to positively transform the lives of those we serve and guide them along a pathway to self-sufficiency.

The Livingston County Corps Community Center was established in 1989 and was meant to be a temporary home. Thirty years

ago The Salvation Army saw a need in Livingston County to establish an office to help those in this rural but growing community. Today, Livingston County is one of the more affluent counties in Michigan, yet more than a quarter of its residents struggle to pay for basic necessities. In fact, 7% of the population lives in complete poverty.

Located in an out-of-the-way residential area not zoned for this type of use, this tiny 70-year-old building houses employees and volunteers. More importantly, this facility serves as a food pantry, clothing storage, Church, youth and family center and meeting place for those most vulnerable.

VISION In 1865, William Booth had a passion to bring the Gospel to society’s outcasts. As his ministry developed in the East End of London, Booth experienced a growing awareness of the complex nature of poverty and its impact on the life circumstances and life choices of the poor. His intention was not to simply give temporary aid, but to help people permanently improve the circumstances of their lives. From its earliest days, this knowledge has shaped the way The Salvation Army has grown and developed; and it still motivates The Salvation Army in its mission today. An early slogan ‘Soup, Soap and Salvation’ illustrated that we need to feed the whole person, body, mind and soul.

Today, the Livingston County Corps Community Center places a heavy emphasis on this through our Pathway of Hope program. Our vision is to positively transform the lives of those we serve and guide them along a pathway to self-sufficiency.

Our vision is not about a building. It is about the valuable and important work we could do with that space. Our ability to serve has been limited over recent years due to space constraints. Winter coats, hats and gloves are stored in the aisles of the Church. Food preparation and storage are done in a make-shift kitchen the size of a large walk-in closet. There is no space for a family to come in and sit down to discuss their needs or to receive counseling with dignity and respect.

With additional and more professional space, our clients will feel valued. With self-esteem comes pride and motivation to build their lives back up. The Salvation Army will be there every step of the way giving them a pathway to hope. Additionally, The Livingston County Corps Community Center will be implementing plans to expand its social services to include programs and resources not currently or sufficiently offered in the county by other nonprofit organizations.

Pathway of Hope Ending Generational Poverty The Salvation Army’s Pathway of Hope program provides individualized services to families with children who desire to take action to break the cycle of crisis and vulnerability that repeats generation after generation. It seeks to address the root causes of poverty in addition to The Salvation Army’s history of compassionate serving. By helping families overcome challenges like unemployment, unstable housing and lack of education, we can lead families down a path toward increased stability and self-sufficiency

Jane’s STORY Jane and her children came to the Livingston County Salvation Army offices when there was no where else to turn. After initial evaluations, Jane was enrolled in the Pathway of Hope program. At that time, she was unemployed and the family had been homeless for nearly two years.

Within a year, through the hard work of Jane and her family and the guidance and support of The Salvation Army case manager, Jane was employed and living in her own apartment. The Pathway of Hope program has helped Jane and countless others end the cycle of generational poverty.

Heather & Wyatt’s Story Heather grew up in a dysfunctional family, one wrought with abuse and strife that resulted in her leaving her home at age 13. At such a young age, without the guidance that most of us receive, she entered into another abusive relationship and never learned many of the life skills needed for self-sufficiency.

At a critical point in her life, The Salvation Army of Livingston County was there for Heather and her son, Wyatt. Having successfully graduated from the Pathway of Hope program, Heather now has a good job at the school that her son attends and they have continued to meet their goals. They are truly an inspiration to many.

Expansion of Programs Leading to Self-Sufficiency PATHWAY OF HOPE

A formalized, innovative program helping families tackle economic challenges head-on to end the cycle of poverty.

Directly influencing clients in terms of housing, financial literacy, job searches, education and counseling.

CLOTHING DISTRIBUTION

With literally no storage for winter apparel, the ability to provide much needed coats, gloves, hats, and other new or gently used clothing items is severely limited.

SENIOR-ADULT COMPUTER LITERACY

Provide digital literacy to seniors and adults who either do not have access to computers or do not have the skills.

FOOD PANTRY

Today, the Livingston County Corps Community Center is preparing meals in a kitchen less equipped than a modern RV. A more expansive pantry with commercial size refrigerators would allow for not only more food, but healthier and fresh choices.

A B C STUDENT CARE

Finding affordable care is extremely difficult for struggling families/single parents. The cost often eats up the net pay the parent is earning from their job.

Offering low-cost before- and after-school care to those who qualify could be the break these families need.

COMMERCIAL KITCHEN

A commercial kitchen capable of supporting low-cost community events and local disaster relief services would be an asset to the community.

LIFE STUDIES

Offering in-person classes on home finances, child rearing, relationships, health and nutrition and job seeking skills could be critical to our client’s pathway to self-sufficiency.

HOMELESS ASSISTANCE

Despite providing hotel stays for the homeless, there are times when individuals are turned away due to funding and availability. Providing services for the homeless, such as showers, laundry and a hot meal are crucial.

Your Donation Doubled Mervyn Price, born in 1927, was a long-time resident of Detroit. He was a proud U.S. Navy veteran and was employed most of his life as a civil engineer in Detroit. Mervyn had a profound love of The Salvation Army, so much so that he gifted The Salvation Army a significant sum in his estate plan. Due to Mervyn’s generosity and loving heart, The Salvation Army of Livingston County is the grateful recipient of a $1 million match.
