AS the sun prepares to set on 2017, now is the perfect opportunity to reflect on the year that was. To say it was a big 12 months for western Queensland would be an understatement. Dalby continued to stamp its mark on the renewable energy sector, with the Coopers Gap wind farm adding great credence to the town’s plans to be dubbed the energy capital of Australia. With the green light given early in the year to the Luminous Energy Solar Farm located between Miles and Chinchilla, the tide began to turn in the region, with locals and investors realising the immense opportunity that comes with such a thriving industry. Thanks to these projects and more, there is no denying the strong investment prospects available to those wanting to capitalise on this incredibly viable market. Western Queensland is on the brink of a resurgence and for those looking to get their finger in the pie, relocating to the west has never been a better option. And while monopolising on the opportunity is often a good enough reason to relocate, for anyone considering a move to these areas, the benefits certainly do not stop there. There is something truly mesmerising about life on the land and as you will find, these regions encompass the very essence and spirit of rural living. Salt-of-the-Earth people and a relaxed lifestyle combine to make such destinations not only attainable but incredibly attractive. The powerful draw of rural life is hard to resist and with an abundance of opportunity on the horizon, now is the time to answer the call and offer your family an unparalleled lifestyle of space and freedom. Carmen Miller

ULTIMATE REAL ESTATE :: MILES

HUB OF TOWN: Dogwood Crossing is the cultural heart of the Miles community, inspiring and entertaining those who visit. The award-winning building has become a cultural icon for the region with its seven-metre tall stylised steel bottle trees forming a colonnade down the centre of the facility. PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED

MILES OFFERS RELAXED, CARE-FREE LIFESTYLE When it comes to a family-friendly town, look no further than beautiful Miles

The town had always been a thriving agricultural hub of sheep and cattle, but these days the market is dominated by several prominent stud cattle lines, and a strong cropping industry

GIVEN the fast pace of life in the 21st century — now, more than ever — families are looking to escape the rat-race of city living and relocate to a place where their children can run free and enjoy the simplicities of life. One such place which offers this patricular lifestyle and so much more is Miles. From the down-to-earth locals, through to the community-spirited nature of the region — there is just so much to love about the place. The area was explored by Ludwig Leichhardt who, in October, 1844, named atributary of the Condamine River, Dogwood Creek.

When the railway creek crossing was constructed and opened in 1878 by the Minister for Railways, William Miles, the settlement at the area was named after him. The town had always been a thriving agricultural hub of sheep and cattle, but these days the market is dominated by several prominent stud cattle lines, and a strong cropping industry. In recent years the town, which is 46km west of Chinchilla, has experienced an explosion of activity as a result of the coal seam gas industry with hundreds of new houses built along with several new motels and large worker accommodation

camps. The 2011 census listed Miles’ population at about 1800 people, however, the fluctuating nature of the CSG workforce means the area could have a population anywhere between that number and thousands more. A calendar favourite in the Miles district is the Beef, Bells and Bottle Tree Festival, a Biennial September showcase of community activities and events that capture the town’s living history, celebrate its relaxed country lifestyle, and provide ample opportunities for community and visitor involvement.

WIND POWER: Australia's largest wind farm is set to be built in the Darling Downs north of Dalby by AGL and GE. PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED

THE beauty of the Dalby township is the many industries that thrive within the community and the various opportunities available to locals. In recent years, Dalby has served as a major administrative centre for the oil and gas exploration industry

in south west Queensland, but there is so much more powering its economy. It also services a major power station at nearby Kogan Creek, and with the announcement of a new solar farm on Blaxland-South Rd, it is set to become an energy shire for Queensland. Though coal mining has dropped off significantly, it still produces ethanol from sorghum at its United Petroleum Bio Refinery – the first of its kind in Australia.

Historically it was a significant hub for agricultural products including pigs and sheep, and its cattle sale-yards have the second-largest throughput of cattle in Queensland, the town being well-positioned to service the whole state. Dalby is also the largest grain receiving depot in Queensland. Crop products are many, including cotton, sorghum, wheat, barley, sunflowers, chickpeas, mung beans and corn, and two cotton gins are located close to the town.

FUN FACTS

■ Chinchilla is 302 metres (not quite 1000 feet) above sea level. ■ The area produces a quarter of all melons grown in Australia. ■ The local Indigenous tribe is the Barangun people. ■ Explorer Ludwig Leichhardt named the area in 1844 after the local Aboriginal name for the native cypress pines, ‘jinchilla’. ■ The Barakula forest, just 23 km from the town, is the largest natural state forest in the southern hemisphere. ■ The Chinchilla wattle is a rare variety of acacia and can be found in the Barakula Forest. ■ Driving along Auburn Road to the forest, you will pass several historic landmarks, including Australia’s first oil bore and the dingo barrier fence, which features sonic deterrents.

■ Local legend has it that when an application was made by Matthew Goggs for Chinchilla Station, the Sydney Registrations Office changed the name from Jinchilla to Chinchilla. ■ The creek at Leichhardt’s campsite was named Charley’s Creek after the explorer’s top Aboriginal tracker, known as Charley Fisher. ■ The Chinchilla Amateur Picnic Race Club was formed on November 17 1959. The first race meeting was held on April 30 1960, racing for a trophy valued at 15 pounds. The club is now known as Chinchilla Race Club. Chinchilla races are held four times per year and have the biggest field of starters per race. ■ World famous film producer George Miller hails from Chinchilla, as do singer/songwriter and international star Pete Murray and football great Jack Gleeson.

ULTIMATE REAL ESTATE :: HOME

IN-SINK WITH STYLE Choosing a sink is something we sometimes fail to see the significance of until it’s too late. Consider for a moment when you’ve washed your hands in a sink that’s far too low or too shallow, and water is splashed everywhere.

APART from being statement-making decor, sinks also need to be congruous with the space available and your lifestyle. To help you cover all bases and find the perfect sink that fits within your bathroom, here’s a guide to help you choose the best sink for each space. What is the sink going to be used for? This might sound a little silly but not all sinks in your home need to be the same, so before you look into sink options you need to ask yourself: What will the sink be used for? For instance, a sink in a toilet-only space (think wall-mounted or pedestal sinks with no storage) compared to a sink in your main bathroom (think top- or under-mounted sinks and maybe even double sinks with lots of underneath storage) will be used differently. As will the sink in the guest bathroom (which won’t be used as often) compared to one in a bathroom for little kids or for someone older (where mobility around the sink becomes more important). Consider each space separately. Space matters when it comes to bathrooms —in particularly sinks. Not only should the space available in your bathroom be a deciding factor when it comes to choosing a sink, but so should the amount of space you need around the sink. Think about the counter top for your sink and how much space you require it to have, as well as the ideal distance between the sink and other things in the bathroom, such as mirrors, wall cabinets, etc. Size and shape matter If you’re looking for a sink for your main bathroom, you’ll want to opt for the biggest sink/counter top combo you can fit. Why? This sink space will most likely be a multi-purpose area used for washing hands, applying make-up, washing your face and cleaning teeth. There’s nothing worse than washing your face at a sink that’s not wide and deep enough, as you’ll no doubt cover the counter top with dirty water. Sinks come in an array of shapes — such as square, rectangle, round and oval — so you can go for a shape that helps you make the best use of space. For instance, some shapes will work in open spaces while others will maximise corner spaces. Bathroom sink type Use this guide to help you decide the best sink type for your needs. Top-mount sink: These are probably the most commonly used sinks with most of the sink sitting below the counter. Top-mount sinks are suitable for pretty

much any counter top material, including wood and laminate, as the cut-out is completely covered by the sink and therefore doesn’t risk being damaged by water. Under-mount sink Ideal for busy bathrooms (hello families), these sinks sit underneath the counter and create a seamless, clean look, as less of the actual sink is visible. As water and things can be wiped directly from the counter top into the sink, this is an easy-to-clean option. Vessel sink: These sinks are ideal for bigger bathrooms and they generally sit completely on top of the counter top. If you like a deep sink that can hold plenty of water or is easy to wash your make-up off without getting water all over the counter top, go for this type. Wall-mounted sink: Good for smaller spaces, these sinks are fixed directly to the wall without the need for a counter top. Without cabinets below, wall-mounted sinks save on space, too, so if it’s a toilet-only room or a small bathroom, these are a great option. Just remember, all plumbing will need to be positioned inside the wall for a clean look. Pedestal sink: These are perfect for smaller spaces where you cannot have plumbing inside the wall as the pedestal under the sink conceals the pipework. These look great in more traditional homes with a classic interior look. Semi-recessed sink: These sinks are good for small spaces where it’s important to have at least some storage. Semi-recessed sinks sit proudly at the front of the counter top and cabinets. It’s good to note, however, that storage will be quite shallow but at least you have some cupboard and counter top space. All-in-one sink and counter top: These are a good option if you want to buy something all-in-one and not think about the various elements such as bowl, counter top, mounting and so on. All-in-ones generally have a sink that sits on top, which is part of the counter top. —realestate.com.au

ULTIMATE REAL ESTATE :: GARDEN

SPICE UP YOUR GARDEN If you fancy yourself a bit of a chef, grow your own herbs at home - it saves a pretty penny!

If you have a recipe that calls for a combination of flavours it’s easy to clock $10 at the checkout on herbs alone, which isn’t the most financially sustainable way to cook. The good news is that growing herbs at home is both affordable and accessible - you just need to know what herbs are easy to grow, where to put them and how to take care of them. With that in mind, here’s our guide to seven of the easiest herbs to grow at home and some essential things you should know before you get started. Basil Basil is a leafy and fragrant herb that grows beautifully in full sunlight. Basil loves moist but well drained soil and requires lots of pruning when it’s in full season. When a branch of your basil has seven or eight leaves, it’s time to give it a prune to allow for new growth. Basil works well in Italian dishes and can be made into pesto pasta sauces or added to salads Coriander Summer is not ideal for coriander to grow but spring, winter and autumn should see your coriander plant in full bloom. Coriander plants like sunny spots in the garden, well drained soil, regular watering and fertilising. When embarking on a journey to learn how to grow herbs in pots, coriander is your go-to. While it also grows well in the ground, coriander makes for an excellent container mate for other plants and herbs. Coriander is a pungent herb that complements Indian and Asian dishes. Rosemary Rosemary is arguably the easiest herb to grow. If you plant it in a good spot, it will provide you with more rosemary than you’ll ever be able to use. Rosemary plants can grow quite tall and wide but can still live happily in large pots and containers. It can survive well in hot and dry climates so be careful not to over water or over fertilise it. Rosemary is a hearty herb that works well with winter foods like soups, stews and baked potatoes. Parsley If you want to discover how to grow herbs inside, or more importantly, what herbs are easy to grow inside, then look no further than parsley. Not unlike other herbs, parsley flourishes in sunny areas, but it’s a hardy, versatile herb making it one of the easiest herbs to grow in the kitchen. There are two basic varieties of parsley - flat leaf and curly. Both are excellent for cooking, particularly in Italian dishes, and both will grow well in most gardens or containers. Parsley likes to be planted in spring and needs a moderate to low amount of water and fertilisation.

HERB GARDEN: Bring your garden to life with herbs that will reward your tastebuds for your green-thumb efforts. Lavender While Lavender isn’t technically a herb, it’s still a wonderful plant to grow as a part of an edible garden. You can use it for baking, making your drawers smell sweet and for adding fragrance to bathroom products. Lavender loves full sun so make sure you can accommodate its needs before you plant it. Lavender likes a well drained pot, but give it lots of water at least once a week. If your lavender is growing well it will need pruning regularly to keep it under control - lavender thrives under the right conditions so make sure

you keep an eye on it Chives Chives like the cold weather so winter is when you’ll get the best out of your chive plants. If you plant chives under the right conditions they can overwhelm your garden so make sure you keep an eye on any neighbouring plants. Chives love full sun, cool weather and moist soil that’s fertile and well-drained. Chives are a delicious addition to winter soups and are also fantastic when stirred into dips and sauces Mint

Keen to start growing herbs and seeing your produce flourish fast? Fragrant and fast growing, mint is an easy-to-grow and very useful addition to an at-home herb garden. Mint likes a nice mixture of sun and shade and thrives well in gardens, pots and containers. Make sure you place mint plants about 40cm apart to allow for rapid growth and to discourage the roots from over crowding. — realestate.com.au
