Ultimate Motoring, Off Road & Accessory Guide
WELCOME to the first edition of the Motoring Guide for 2019. What drives the team behind this publication is a passion for all things motoring – whether it’s exclusive test drive reviews of the latest cars, profiles of local businesses who are focussed on getting you back on the road or the latest in development that affects you – we have it all. The Toowoomba Second Range Crossing is one development that everyone can’t stop talking about – and for good reason – it is one of the largest road infrastructure projects in Australia’s history. With the four-year project approaching its mid-2019 completion date there has been growing talk in the transport industry surrounding the cost of the toll that will be charged for the 41km heavy vehicle route. Undoubtedly the project will save time and have an enormous impact on the Garden City’s traffic flow issues, but whether transport companies are convinced will come down to balancing the almighty dollar and time. Hear what business leaders in the transport industry have to say about the city-transforming development. In this issue we also explore how Wilkie Body Works has been the go-to for smash repairs in Toowoomba for the past 84 years. This is a business that has been operating in and supporting our city for decades. The intergenerational family-run business is a testament to Wilkies’ ability to adapt to the times while continuing to build on a foundation of quality service ever since current owner Steve Wilkie’s grandfather Ben established the business in 1935. We here at Motoring Guide place a lot of important on providing our readers with quality reviews of the latest cars on the market. Readers will learn in this edition why the Holden Arcadia is the car of the future that highlights how far the industry has come with autonomous driving. With 2018 already feeling like a distant memory – there’s plenty of excitement ahead in the motoring and transport industries and Motoring Guide will be there to capture it all in 2019.

TAKE THE HASSLE OUT OF SELLING YOUR VEHICLE THE PROBLEM
Selling your car, caravan, boat, or any other vehicle can be a daunting and time-consuming task. Selling privately can sometimes get you a bigger pay off but at what cost? There is a lot of time and effort involved when dealing with potential buyers. Sometimes you may not be able to respond to messages and enquiries quickly enough; the paperwork can seem unmanageable; and there are also the tyre-kickers and time wasters who can cause you grief. Trading-in your vehicle can often cause you to lose money in a change-over deal
Critch Automotive Group can take away the hassle of selling your vehicle privately and still get you a better price with their consignment service. Owner Don Critch says that they can make your sales process easy for you. “We sit down with you when you are selling to find what your car is worth retail and we then try to achieve as close to that price as possible. “We take care of everything for you, from taking photos, marketing your car, negotiating with buyers and transferring the registration, to ensure you get the best price with the least hassle – we guarantee it” Don said.
On the other side of the sale, Critch Automotive Group also offer potential buyers all the benefits of a new car dealership. “We can arrange warranties for peace of mind driving and can offer finance to purchase. These are valuable local services that you cannot do as a private seller,” Mr Critch said. Don and his partner Kirsty Mitchell both have extensive marketing experience and since they started Critch Automotive Group in March 2018 they have sold vehicle across the country. Their expertise in online marketing is something they credit with their success. BUILT ON EIGHT DECADES FAMILY KNOWLEDGE AND DEDICATION If you’ve been in business for 84 years, you know you must be getting something right. When Steve Wilkie bought his smash repairs business from dad Col Wilkie in 2008, he was continuing a long family tradition started by his grandfather Ben in 1935. Col Wilkie Body Works in Toowoomba is a true family operation with Steve’s sister Kerri Crisp and his wife Hannah also working there among the 17-strong team that prides itself on quality, fast, guaranteed work. And it was that attention to detail with a real customerfocused approach that Mrs Crisp said would continue to keep the business going strong for years to come. “We do anything from small vehicles, 4WDs to light commercial,” she said. “It should be a given that a panel shop can fix your car but we
like to look after the person too. We try to make it as easy as we possibly can and offer a lifetime guarantee on all of our work so people can have peace of mind.” “We’ve been here for a long time and we wouldn’t have been if we weren’t doing the right thing.” She said.
much more to the business than ironing out dings caused by car accidents and rogue roos, with a full suite of services added to the line-up. One such service was upgrades such as the new Dominator ute tray lining that Mr Wilke said was growing in popularity for ute owners keen to see their pride and joy last the distance.
The company supported customers through the insurance claims process, helping them to lodge and organise repair times. They work with all insurers on the market, just remember that it is your policy and your choice of repairer. Customers come from far and wide for their service with many happy to send in cars from right across western Queensland and company estimator Bert Webster did regular quoting trips throughout southwest Queensland.
He said ute trays were often affected by rust and wear and tear, so the perfect solution was Dominator which resisted chipping, rust, UV exposure and solvent and chemical leaks as well as hiding minor surface imperfections. It could be colour coded to match your vehicle or whatever colour you chose. He said the team at Col Wilke Body Works believed strongly in providing people with a great customer experience in a one-stop shop.
Owner Steve Wilkie said he was Committed to staff training and had all the latest technology available. These days there was so

Being involved in a car accident is stressful enough without having to stress about choosing a reputable smash repair company. Image: Istock
TRUST IN A PROFESSIONAL AS anyone who has ever been involved in a car accident can attest to, keeping a calm and clear mind after the incident is easier said than done. However, when it comes to selecting the right company to assess your vehicle and undertake the necessary smash repairs, there are a few elements one must be aware of to avoid additional costs and future headaches. When it comes to the first step in the repairs process, a thorough vehicle assessment is paramount to the final result. In most cases after an accident, the car will be disassembled to ensure any and all damage is identified. Whilst cosmetic damage is often our first port of call as an owner, disassembly of the vehicle is the best way to ensure safety and security. This method also allows for a more accurate quote for cost and timing of the repair and helps avoid any surprises once
Don’t forget to consider consumer guarantee when deciding on your smash repairer. Image: Istock
it’s time to pay for the services. Another element to consider before deciding on your smash repairer is a consumer guarantee. Reputable companies often offer a guarantee period which helps to ensure you receive a level of workmanship that is committed to restoring the condition and value of your vehicle.
Smash repairers will often follow advice from the car manufacturer themselves to ensure a detailed and incident-specific process is undertaken. There is no ‘one size fits all’ method when it comes to repairing a vehicle, so be wary of this when deciding upon the right company to undertake the work required.
Don’t be afraid to question the company on the parts they use and whether they are genuine or not. Reiterating the importance of keeping and clear mind throughout the repairs phase, it is important to have your wits about you and not be lured in by the ‘cheap fix’. Non-genuine parts and poor workmanship are a deadly combination and often these parts do not meet the specifications set by the car manufacturer and as a result, a variety of problems can arise. What you save in the initial stages could all be quickly undone if the non-genuine parts used wear quickly, break more easily or in the worst possible case, do not function as required. Lastly, query the method used to decide upon a repairs process. What you are looking for here is a tailormade approach to your specific vehicle based on the extent of the damage and its make and model.
Don’t be afraid to question the company on the parts they use, and whether they are genuine or not.

TRUCKIES REACT TO NEW TSRC Many see the potential but are concerned about tolls BY BOB RILEY WITH not much fanfare, the western section of the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing was opened to the public in early December. The partial opening of the TSRC between Cranley and Charlton will provide new connections between Toowoomba’s central business district, via Mort St, and the Warrego Highway at Charlton, the Wellcamp Airport via the Toowoomba-Cecil Plains Rd, and onto the Gore Highway at Athol. Work to upgrade Griffiths St from Mort St to Harlaxton in the east will provide a permanent link between the TSRC and the New England Highway. The upgraded section of Griffiths St will become a designated multi-combination route with “as-of’-right” access for B-doubles to operate between the New England Highway and the TSRC. The eastern section of the TSRC, which connects with the Warrego Highway at Helidon Spa, is expected to be opened towards the middle of 2019. But what impact will the recent opening of the western section of the TSRC have on local and throughToowoomba truck traffic? And what impact is anticipated once the full length of the TSRC is opened to traffic in 2019? Big Rigs spoke to a number of transport operators in and around Toowoomba to gauge their impressions. Well-known Brisbane – Mount Isa – Darwin trucking identity Ricky Blinco is based at Oakey, just off the Warrego Highway about 30 kilometres west of Toowoomba. “At the moment it will have no impact on our operations,” Mr Blinco said. “I have taken a run along the new section to check it out, but until the rest of it is opened and the toll charges are known, it’s difficult to really say.” Mr Blinco’s sentiment was echoed by Darren Nolan, a director of Nolan’s Transport, which is based at Gatton about 40 kilometres east of Toowoomba. “If it saves time and it was financially viable to do it, we would need to consider it. But we don’t know that yet,” Mr Nolan said. “We are in the business of trying to minimise cost impacts, so from a customer point of view we’d have to carefully weigh up what the situation is. But as yet we haven’t made any decisions about using it.” Bruce Rub Refrigerated Transport is based at Drayton on the southern edge of Toowoomba and runs a busy fleet of refrigerated vans on single trailer operations. With his fleet based on the south side of Toowoomba, Bruce Rub said his trucks load from south of the city with freight for the Brisbane Markets then return with deliveries into Toowoomba’s CBD. With no direct access from the TSRC to the south side of the city, he too was concerned with the toll charges on the finished
WAITING GAME: Many operators Big Rigs spoke to are sitting back to see what toll rates are on the new crossing. PHOTO: ABOVE PHOTOGRAPHY PTY LTD TSRC and with what may or may not be imposed on transport operations that will still use the existing Toowoomba Range road and James St. Out to the southwest of Toowoomba, Kent Baillie is a director of Pittsworth-based Mount Isa Carriers. Mr Baillie operates a fleet of some 22 trucks, many of which are specced for double and triples road train operations across western and northwestern Queensland. Mr Baillie has been involved, through the consultative process, with the TSRC project for much of the past two years and had attended many consultative meetings in that time. He acknowledged that the TSRC clearly has considerable potential, but his concerns as to whether it would be viable for his company to use it centred around three main issues: the toll charges; the travel times and actual vehicle costs in running the new road; and what restrictions, if any, might be placed on trucks continuing to use the existing road network. For others, several of whom didn’t wish to be identified but included both small and large fleet operations, the TSRC bypass also projected enormous potential for them, especially for truck traffic that was simply passing through the city on its way to destinations in the southwest, west, northwest and north, in particular. But the unknown toll charges, their likely operating costs in terms of both time and money in running the new road in an industry that exists on very tight financial margins anyway, and the uncertainty as to what limits may or may not be placed on transport continuing to use the existing east west truck route across Toowoomba, remained as unresolved issues.
throughout the project. He’s been on a number of site tours as the project has progressed and regards it as a marvellous piece of infrastructure, particularly as it represents a significant investment in regional infrastructure that has considerable potential to connect up to an inland freight route. Such a route would see a lot more freight come out of Brisbane to Roma and head north and would offer an alternate to the always busy and often weather-impacted Bruce Highway. Mr Mahon commented that the TSRC wasn’t just a new road for road transport to use, he saw that significant benefits would come out of it for all of Toowoomba, but the cost of using it shouldn’t just be directed at truck operators. “We are very concerned as to the quantum of that toll,” he said. “It should be fair and just. They should be using a model that incentivises people to use it, not dis-incentivises them by making it so harsh that people will be working out ways just to get around. And that would just be ridiculous.” “We, (the transport industry), accept that it’s going to have a toll, but you don’t solve hard issues with bad policy. “There are precedents. If you look at the Brisbane urban freight corridor which, while it has bans on it, there are also exceptions on it for local depots, local operators and for local deliveries, and to the best of my knowledge, there is no undue issue with that,” Mr Mahon said. “The TSRC is a concession of 42 kilometres,” he said, “but we have a benchmark, as the trip from Gailes through to the Port of Brisbane (via the Logan and Gateway Motorways, which are both toll roads) is about 50 kilometres and it’s about $15 a one-way trip (for an articulated truck).”
Queensland Transport Association CEO Gary Mahon said their organisation had been heavily engaged with the Government

Housing your vehicle in a shed is ideal, with the enclosed area offering safety and protection from the outside elements. Image: Istock
SECURING YOUR PRIDE AND JOY It could be said that the bigger the shed, the greater the car obsession. Men the world-over have pleaded their case for years as to why they’ve needed a bigger, better whiz-bang shed and while it’s safe to say some arguments hold less credibility than others, the reasoning on safe and secure vehicle storage is airtight. Housing your vehicle in a shed is ideal, with the enclosed area offering safety and protection from the outside elements. When selecting a shed specifically for the use of vehicle storage, there are a few unique factors to consider that may not otherwise come into consideration. Accessibility for the vehicles is paramount. While you may not need the space for larger cars at the shed’s construction phase, it is important to consider whether this may be necessary in the future. If you plan on also storing tools and the like in the shed, consider the ease in which you can move around the space if a car, or a number of cars, are also parked in there is important. When it comes to constructing a shed for vehicle storage, foundations are also extremely important. Take large trees and roots into consideration as you do not want anything compromising the foundations and potentially harming your vehicle.
Consider environmental factors when choosing where to put your shed. Avoid areas where water pools, trees and tree roots. Image: Istock. Lastly, other environmental factors play a large part in selecting the perfect plot for your shed. Try to avoid areas where water pools in your backyard, which can cause problems such as mould, rust or even rising damp as this could have a drastic effect on your stored vehicle. Once you have decided on the perfect type and positioning of your shed, keep in mind a few additional storage tips to help keep your vehicle as safe and well-cared for as possible as recommended by the RACQ.
Storing your vehicle • It should be cleaned inside and out and left to thoroughly dry before being stored. • Tyres should be inflated to approximately 30 kpa above their normal pressure. • Connect a smart battery charger that has a trickle charge or maintenance mode to keep the battery charged. • Chock the wheels and leave the handbrake off. • Car covers should be used to prevent dust build up that could damage paint and bright work.

TECH SAVVY MECHANICS IT’S no great surprise that mechanical services for your vehicles is an important component of any gas, mining or industrial business. It can save you a lot of money in the long run, and if you want to upgrade or downsize your fleet it can help immensely with re-sale values. But the more modern your vehicle, the more its systems will be computer controlled, making auto electrical servicing at least as important as mechanical servicing. After all, it’s well and good if the engine is oiled and running smoothly, but still won’t go due to a failure in the computer system. Of course, many auto electrical problems will simply present themselves with a little light on your vehicle’s dashboard, making it easy enough to treat many issues as they crop up. But there are also plenty of other problems that may even initially present as mechanical issues, when in reality, what needs looking at is the computer or its related components such as sensors. Auto electrical servicing can also help you achieve things like better fuel economy, and when you’re running a large fleet that can save a lot on your bottom line. To show you the importance of quality auto electrical servicing, here’s a run-down of the electrical systems vital to your vehicle’s smooth running: Engine tuning: A well-tuned engine not only runs smoother and has more power when you need it, but also saves on both fuel and maintenance costs, not to mention emissions.
Carbon: Ignore carbon build-up on fuel injectors and other engine components and you could find yourself with a decrease in power, rough idling and higher emissions. Alternator: It might look like you have battery issues, but in reality if your vehicle isn’t efficiently converting mechanical power into electrical power, your batteries will either charge inefficiently or not at all. Starter motor: Your starter motor is at the foundation of every driving experience as it turns your engine over when you turn the key. Ignore it as it begins to fail and you or your workers could find themselves in the middle of nowhere on a mining site with nothing more than a click when the key is turned. Fuel: Your fuel injection system optimises the amount of fuel going into the engine, which combines with air to create the perfect combustion. If your fuel injectors aren’t working properly or need cleaning, it can directly affect performance. The same goes for fuel pumps. Transmission: You might think your automatic transmission is fine if your vehicle accelerates and changes gears adequately, but it’s often surprising the difference regular transmission servicing makes. Poor servicing can also lead to gears and plates wearing out faster, which can be very expensive to replace or repair.

PARTS OF THE PUZZLE Should your fleet go with OEM parts or generic parts? WHEN it comes to buying auto parts for your fleet of cars, utes or machinery, there is a lot more to consider than meets the eye. If all your servicing and repairs are done off-site at a registered dealership, chances are any replacement parts will be original equipment manufacturer (OEM), which means they will be quite close to the original part supplied with the vehicle and made by the same manufacturer. They do, however, tend to be pricey. If you’re using an independent mechanic or choose to employ someone on-site to service and repair your fleet, there may be a few other options available to you, so it pays to do your research. The other two categories of parts are brand name and generic and it’s important to know
the difference, as it can often be a case of “you get what you pay for”. Brand name parts are generally more expensive than generic parts and even sometimes more expensive than OEM parts. You’re generally paying for a higher standard of manufacture with a lot of research and development behind it, not to mention warranties or guarantees. If you choose to go with generic you can save some money, but unless you sit down and do your research and check reviews, you may be in for further replacements a lot sooner than if you chose OEM or brand name parts.
