2018 has been a very exciting year at St John’s with the opening of a new Kindy as well as new classrooms and facilities. Business Manager Belinda Hayward, ‘It is important that we have the facilities and infrastructure to ensure the best educational platform for students to thrive.’

2017 saw the introduction of a widespread program in the Early Years around Reading and Phonological Awareness. As part of the program teachers have been involved in extensive training and coaching where experts in reading and language, work with teachers and students in their classrooms, here at St John’s in Roma. This program has delivered exceptional results with some students showing 16 months growth in 6 months.

School should be proud” – Parent At the moment interviews are underway for Prep and the Early Years for 2019 where there will be three Prep classes, an expert teacher and a full time teacher aide in each classroom. Investment in the Early Years ensures success for the future. Socrates stated ‘Education is the kindling of a flame not the filling of a vessel.’ The early years of education are so important this is where they develop a love of learning and a thirst for knowledge.

TAKE A TRIP BACK IN TIME

A great learning experience for Children of all Ages Myrtle May the Miniature Steam Train

The Miniature Steam Loco Myrtle May’s total length is 11.6m, she runs on 10¼” track and has 3 passenger carriages and a water and coal tender, she can carry more than 12 adults or 18 children at any time!

Myrtle May was built by Nelson Hoey in the name of his wife. Myrtle May’s parts were cast at the Toowoomba foundry. Based on the production drawings of the 1915 C16 Steam locomotive, Myrtle May is a smaller scale model of the C16s, originally designed in 1903 as an improved 4-8-0 loco built by various firms. 15 of the full-sized Locos were built by the Toowoomba Foundry for Queensland Rail.

The last of the C16’s was commissioned on 21 April 1915 and withdrawn from service on 28 May, 1964, after travelling 1,134,533 miles around Queensland.The last surviving full scale C16 is currently being restored at Downs Steam.The track was built by 8 participants from the New Hope Traineeship Program and completed in October 2016.

Tickets are $3 per child and $5 per adult, children under 5 years are required to have an adult accompany them.Tickets to the Pioneer Village are optional.The Village is also open everyday except Christmas Day from 10am to 4pm. Highfields Pioneer Village is run entirely by Volunteers dedicated to preserving the History of the Darling Downs for Future Generations.

Henry the Model T Ford Bus Highfields Pioneer Village are loving their newest attraction of a Model T Ford Bus who gives rides around the Village grounds.‘Henry’ as he is affectionately known at the Highfields Pioneer Village was manufactured in 1924 and originally used as a school bus for the Kilcoy State School from 1924 to 1940.

The bus was decommissioned and purchased by a Museum operating on the Pacific Coast where it was on display until the 1960’s when ‘Henry’ became part of the private collection of Bob Bone and was used at many historic events throughout rural Queensland as a rides vehicle. In 1996 Henry was placed on loan at the Longreach Qantas Museum for display purposes. In 2016 Volunteer Manager Ray

Ashford OAM purchased the vehicle and began its restoration with fellow volunteers.

“Henry was purchased as a ‘rainy day’ project, we didn’t get much rain and we took some time to source the parts, replace some of the woodwork, to get the upholstery done and to find the right people to do the signwriting”.

Ray says.

Henry the Model T Ford bus can carry 12 people at once and is available for rides for birthday parties, school groups, and weddings.

The bus has had a positive flow on effect for the Village as well giving visitors a sneak preview of what the Village has to offer and is a great attraction for inquisitive young minds.

The Southern Downs Steam Railway Association Inc (SDSR) is a volunteer, not-for-profit tourist heritage steam railway.

Relive the authentic Australian pioneering spirit.

If you’re visiting the Darling Downs, enjoy an amazing day discovering and reliving our unique Australian history, recreated as a rural working village with 60 heritage buildings spread over 20 picturesque acres. Includes 1909 Heritage Chapel (perfect rustic wedding venue); Southern Cross Museum; Transport Museum featuring rare and original early cars, trucks and bicycles; Toowoomba Fire Brigade Museum; Ambulance Museum; a Village Silversmith, wooden Toyshop and 1900s Slab Cottage. Formed in 1996, the SDSR has been operating on Queensland Rail main lines in the heart of the picturesque Southern Darling Downs and Granite Belt Regions of Southern Queensland since 2009.

The lines run on include: • Southern Line - South to Stanthorpe & Wallangarra, and North to Hendon, Clifton & Toowoomba.

• South Western Line - West to Inglewood, Goondiwindi and Toobeah.

With a focus on people “experiencing the magic of steam on the Southern Downs”, SDSR offers train journeys to

meet most tastes. From short family journeys to Hendon and Clifton, to the full day out retracing to Sydney Mail run to Wallangarra, SDSR’s journeys are all different, unique, and steeped with a touch of magic. Why don’t you join the magic today?

The SDSR has its home at the Warwick Railway Precinct (WRP).The WRP is normally open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 3pm and other times by appointment.
