or as long as the silver screen and televisions have existed, little girls (and boys) have been dreaming of making their big break and becoming famous.

For one 15–year–old Toowoomba girl, this dream became reality when she was cast in The Saddle Club (a TV show based on popular teen fiction novels) in the early 2000s.

I’m talking, of course, of our own Keira May Pepper.

After appearing on the show, she was hired by a casting and talent agency to work in their office, where she said she learned a lot about the film industry before leaving it behind for a while.

In the years that followed, Keira pursued other projects, had three children, and generally settled down, with a career in film and television seemingly fading into the background.

“It wasn’t until last year that I was pulled back into it (by accident, really),” she said, explaining that she was cast as an extra on Aquaman and was only meant to be there for a day, but ended up spending more than four months on set.

“I met so many people in the industry and re–sparked my love for acting and, since then, I’ve done a lot,” she said.

Unfortunately, most of the productions Keira has been working on are subject to non–disclosures, so she couldn’t talk about them.

One she could tell us something about, though, is the upcoming Netflix show, Vice Squad: Atlanta.

The Vice Squad franchise is a series of real–life dramatisations from the stories of the Robbery Intervention Detail and other specialised units in law enforcement across the United States of America.

“The series is one–of–a–kind, with powerful storylines based on real cases of human trafficking, which is the spotlight subject,” Keira said.

She will be playing the role of Carnise McDaniel, an Australian badass with an axe to grind.

“She is going to be a force to be reckoned with; a woman with a past, taking on some bad guys.”

Keira feels it’s great for Aussies to have a spot in such a big–budget American series and will be keeping her Australian accent for the role.

Because she was scouted for the show, she didn’t need to go through an auditioning process, as such.

“They found me, reached out to me, and now I am part of something huge.

“I can’t express how grateful and humbled I am to be part of something this big and powerful.”

Angeles soon, without ever having stepped foot off Australian soil.

As daunting as this prospect might be for many people, Keira is excited about the opportunity and views it as a great way to see the world.

“Some of the location studios we will be filming at, are Warner Brothers and Universal Studios and, honestly, I am most excited about that — it’s a dream come true!”

At this point, the move is not permanent and will last only for the duration of filming for Vice Squad, but Keira said she’s making the most of the opportunity.

“I have a manager and agent who are sourcing more roles for me.

“Right now, I have about three lead roles, but an actor goes where the role is, so who knows what the future holds?

Keira plans on taking her children with her to Los Angeles.

“Everything I do is for them.

“I want to give them the best possible life and I would love for them to experience this with me.

“This will open so many doors, not just for me, but for them too.”

Her burgeoning career has not been without it’s ups and downs, though.

While filming Aquaman, Keira became ill.

“I was sick all through filming, and later found out I had cervical cancer,” she shared.

Understandably, she almost gave up her pursuit of acting.

“But, during my treatment and recovery, I realised this is what I really want to do, so I got back up after being knocked down, and kept moving forward,” she said.

Keira makes a point of spending time with her family and friends and credits them as her staunchest supporters.

“I have a really good circle — my mum, my friends and my kids — a small circle, but amazing,” she said.

According to her, the Australian film industry is starting to boom.

“There are a few big productions

being brought to Australia,” she said.

When I asked Keira to pick someone she’d love to work with, she chose Ashton Kutcher — not for his boyishly good looks, but for his invaluable work with Thorn (an international anti–human–trafficking organisation founded by him and Demi Moore in 2009).

Keira said he is involved in the Vice Squad project as well, as it highlights human trafficking and works to bring awareness of the issue.

“The sad reality is that human trafficking and the other crimes we spotlight, aren’t just happening in America — it’s a world–wide problem,” she said.

On a lighter note, Keira said, if she could play the lead role in anything she wanted, she’d like to star in a DC superhero film.

“I want to do something my kids can watch,” she explained.

I asked Keira to offer some advice to aspiring actors.

“I think the main thing, other than acting itself, is networking and getting yourself noticed.

“The film industry is a tough one to crack, but it’s well worth the hard work,” she said.

STYLE MAGAZINE CAUGHT UP WITH SINGER–SONGERWRITERS LYN BOWTELL AND LUKE O’SHEA WHILE THEY WERE IN TOWN FOR THEIR LATEST TOUR

I

t’s a perfect autumn day when I meet Lyn Bowtell and Luke O’Shea out at Cabarlah.

A genuine smile lights up Lyn’s face as she shakes my hand warmly and introduces herself, saying Luke will be out of the car in a moment.

Vivaciousness seems to radiate from her, from the dimples that form as she grins to her sparkling eyes.

When Luke steps forward to greet me, I am struck by how warm and genuine he is as well.

The three of us fall into easy conversation as we find a place to sit.

The duo have known each other for almost 20 years and have toured together before, going as far as Cairns as well as Proserpine, Airlie Beach, Yeppoon and Townville in North Queensland.

“That was in 2014, I think,” Lyn says.

“And then everyone’s got their own agendas and tours, projects,

collaborations, but the planets just aligned for this one,” Luke explains.

It’s important for both Luke and Lyn that their performances together show a balance in the music. “[The show] is a combination of both our separate sets,” Luke says.

“Lyn’s got about four, five albums of her own; I’ve got about eight of my own, so what we’ve found challenging is actually combining our two sets and making sure you cover each other’s light and darkness — you get that balance,” he says.

“That’s the ebb and the flow of a crafted show. You mix light and dark, happy with sad, joyful, meaningful.

“It’s been a real challenge, actually, to find that safe common ground where we feel the show flows beautifully, but we’ve got it.”

Lyn agrees.

“We’ve got a few duets as well, which is lovely; I really enjoy doing that,” she says.

Both singer-songwriters have had a

passion for music since they were relatively young.

“For me, it was basically about where I could sing when I was 12,” Lyn reminisces.

“When you’re that young and you show an interest in music and playing guitar and singing and writing songs, country clubs were the way to go, so I used to go to the Toowoomba country music club and the Dalby country music club when I was a kid and that’s kind of where it all happened — and Mum and Dad’s record collection,” she says.

“But, it’s the friendships that keep me involved in it, really. The music’s amazing, but I think that country music has a very beautiful family.

“Like in country music you can call on your mates and do some tours together, which is pretty rare in the rock industry and stuff, and in blues as well.”

“I was just a mad traveller, so I used to do a lot of busking around the place and I just loved the storytellers, so I was naturally drawn to the country and folk artists... and where people love the lyric, which is within the country music genre.,” he explains.

“I spent a little bit of time within the rock industry as well, and leaving that ego-driven genre behind with all the bands that didn’t get on and pretty aggressive egos, to a very embracing and warm country music community which, as Lyn mentioned before, is like a beautiful dysfunctional family.”

Lyn laughs.

“I would definitely say dysfunctional; there is definitely dysfunction there,” she chuckles.

“But, we all love each other, like with me and Luke — we’re like brother and sister,” Lyn adds before the duo start swapping good-natured insults.

It’s clear the pair have fun while touring together, and they remember one particular interesting incident during their last tour.

“We’ve learnt not to tour North Queensland in April (cyclone season),” Luke laughs.

“Our first gig, only 11 people came because the rest of the town couldn’t get through,” Lyn recalls.

“It was cut off, and the way we got in there was a miracle,” Luke adds.

“Cars floating past us, all that stuff,” he says.

“It was pretty full-on,” Lyn adds.

“Big bales of hay — you know the big round bales — and we were like ‘oh, I’m sure it’s safe’,” she chuckles.

“I just remember watching the caravan go through; Luke and Michael [Bryers] are in one car and Damon and I are in the other, and he had this lovely big caravan.

“And we were going ‘are you going to go through that?’ and they were going ‘yeah, it’ll be fine!’, so their car goes through fine but as I’m watching the water went over the rim of the tyre and it kept going and I’m just like ‘oh my gosh’,” Lyn says.

“My fridge has never really forgiven me,” Luke adds. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

The music makes things like this worth it though.

“Music, I learnt the hard way, is my energy source,” Lyn explains.

“It’s very healing and is just an extension of who I am, so if I stop doing it, part of me is not living.

“I’ve written songs on airplanes, on sickbags because I had nothing else to write on — they just strike like that.”

Luke agrees.

“Inspiration can strike anywhere; there’s no rules with songwriting,” he says.

“Music is life; it’s a soundtrack to life.

“There’s no faster way of connecting with another human being on this planet.”

It’s not the first time either of them have been to Toowoomba — Lyn moved from here in 2000 but returns “home” frequently, and Luke has spent a lot of time in the Garden City over the years.

“It’s always great, but I’ve only almost frozen to death twice in my life; once was in Gympie and the other one was in Toowoomba — both in Queensland ‘cos you just go ‘oh it’s Queensland, she’ll be right, I’ll just put in a t-shirt’,” Luke says.

Luke is quite fond of the city, however, and is always happy to make a stop at the “gateway to Queensland” when travelling.

“Toowoomba is always like the focal point of Queensland when you’re touring, and there’s always been such a warm crowd in Toowoomba,” he says.

For Lyn, it’s about coming home.

“I like the trees, but my favourite part about Toowoomba is coming home to my mum’s place,” she says.

“I also just love the nature of people in Toowoomba — they’re all very down-to-earth and I feel at home here.”

pril Fools’ Day may be over — but, for many, A the memory of the latest round of practical jokes still remains.

It’s a day of whoopee cushions, silly phone calls and fake news articles (the BBC once tricked the citizens of the UK into believing Switzerland has trees that sprout spaghetti).

Leaving a voicemail for your favourite co–worker to show off your best Chewbacca impression, is a favourite in offices around the globe (as is wrapping their whole cubicle in cling–wrap).

Texting your dad, saying you’ve filled up your car’s oil tank with virgin olive oil and waiting for a reply, is the latest favourite among new drivers (one dad replied in style, asking if his daughter’s car now sounds Italian).

The best April Fools’ jokes are the ones that do no harm — apart from mild annoyance and, sometimes, mild embarrassment for the receiver.

That being said; who in the world thought it was a good idea to set aside a special day for pranking your friends and family?

Turns out, nobody knows how April Fools’ Day got started, or why.

One theory, is that the custom stems from Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales (published in 1392).

This argument is based on a fox tricking a vain cock in The Nun’s Priest’s Tale on March 32 (in effect, April 1).

However, the counter argument is that this was a typo and means nothing.

Another theory is that the first April Fools’ Day was on April 1, 1698, when many Brits were tricked into going to the Tower of London to ‘see the Lions washed’.

Neutrals are back with a vengance

Big puffed sleeves are replacing shoulder pads this season, and oversized bags are expected to be the ‘it’ accessory.

COSY UP

Warmth is hot this autumn/winter.

The traditional bucket hat is getting a remake with faux fur and extended brims, while skirts and dresses showcase ankle-length hemlines — from casual skirts to stunning formal gowns.

From high–end fashion labels to the cheapest fast fashion items, the clothing industry is causing a massive amount of waste.

According to ABC’s War on Waste, approximately 6000 kilograms of fashion and textile waste makes its way to Australian dumps every 10 minutes.

Fast fashion has a greater cost than the price tag.

Sure, you can grab a t–shirt for as low as $4, but that does not account for the humanitarian and environmental price paid to produce that item in the first place.

More often than not, fast fashion items don’t last longer than a couple of washes and get dumped without a second thought — it was dead cheap, after all.

Right alongside the fast fashion industry, live high–end labels like Burberry.

The London–based luxury fashion house admitted to burning £30 million of unsold stock in 2018 for the sake of protecting the brand’s exclusivity and value.

This understandably sparked outrage and placed a spotlight on the fashion industry as a whole, as Burberry isn’t the only multi–million dollar brand destroying stock at this level.

Everyone — from the trend setters to those who know nothing about trends — have a job to do.

Everyone has to think about the true cost of their clothes and ask themselves if they’re willing to pay it.

ANXIOUS OR DEPRESSED? Let’s talk about nutrition

W

hen exploring nutrition for good brain health our Standard Australian Diet guidelines fail to protect our mental health.

It falls short of promoting fibre–rich vegetables, Omega 3 fats, foods high in vitamin B1, B5, folate, magnesium and zinc.

Instead, there is a dominant focus on refined sugar and flours.

Currently, mental health issues are a global concern leading to the inability to work, loss of day–to–day function, poor relationships and social connections.

Diet–related mental health issues are also influencing many of our children too (1, 2)*.

Within the field of Nutritional Psychiatry there is more research shedding light on the importance of diet when treating individuals

suffering from anxiety and depression.

Diets higher in plant foods, vegetables, fruits, legumes, lean meats, olive oil, oily fish and adequate amounts of Omega 3s are proving to be an important part of treatment.

A study that was established called the SMILES intervention found that individuals in the dietary intervention had a reduction in their symptoms of depression, with 30 per cent achieving clinical remission compared to only eight per cent in the control group.

What did the control group do differently?

Every day they increased their

intake of whole grains, fresh fruit, good quality dairy and olive oil.

During the week they ate more pulses and fish, therefore they substantially reduced their pre-study diet of pizza, muffins, lollies (highly processed and refined foods).

Studies such as these, highlight how some simple changes to food consumption can influence mental health.

Lemon and peppermint oils are great for digestion.

■ Certain essential oils are great for cleaning.

Lemon oil has purifying properties and includes antioxidants, so cleaning kitchens and bathrooms is great.

Meanwhile, clove oil helps fight mould and fungi.

All this being said, often the level of benefits come down to the quality of essential oils used — the purer the oil, the better.

MASTERING SIMPLE BEAUTY PRODUCTS verything in 2019 has become E more complicated — even washing your face.

There seems to be a whole lot of rules and regulations that apply to this everyday ritual.

So, here's a guide to some of the different types of cleansing products on the market, and how to use them.

CLEANSING OILS

If you wear make-up or have a lot of sweat and oil on your face at the end of the day, then you need to double cleanse — first to remove surface grime, and second to get deep into the pores to thoroughly clean.

Cleansing oils are great for that first cleansing step, because they dissolve stubborn make-up well.

CLEANSING BALMS

Balms work similarly to oils.

They're thick, oily and usually come in a tub — so, they're great for removing make-up.

MICELLAR WATER

Micellar water is clear liquid that feels a tiny bit oily, and you soak a cotton pad in the stuff and swipe it all over your face.

GEL CLEANSER

Gel cleansers are a great way to gently cleanse the skin.

They properly get rid of dirt without stripping it of its natural oils.

CREAM CLEANSERS

Cream cleansers are great for really getting deep into the pores and removing all that grime.

If you have dry skin they might be a bit too hectic.

FOAMING CLEANSERS

Foaming cleansers aren't too drying and they don't strip the skin of its

natural oils, however, they won’t do a great job of removing make-up.

EXFOLIATING CLEANSERS

There are two ways to exfoliate your face — using a physical exfoliant or a chemical exfoliant.

It's purely personal preference on which kind you use, but you probably shouldn't exfoliate more than once or twice a week.

eading make–up artists use fine, loose pigment powders to make any look red carpet worthy with a few simple strokes.

Many women are intimated by these little jars of loose powder, but this cosmetic product is highly versatile.

You just have to know how to use it.

EYESHADOW

Tap some pigment into the jar lid or onto a flat surface.

Use a stiff, flat brush to pat the pigment onto the eyelid.

Use a fluffy dome brush to blend out the crease and feather out any harsh lines.

You can also use a light pigment to brighten the inner corners of your eyes or highlight under the brow bone — both will make your eyes appear larger.

EYELINER

To make a custom shade of eyeliner, tap a small amount of the pigment onto a flat surface.

Add a few drops of setting spray and mix.

Use an angled liner brush to apply to the lash line.

Start in the middle and drag the colour to the outer corners.

HIGHLIGHTER

Need an instant glow?

Tap some pigment onto a flat surface and use a fan brush to sweep the powder along the top of your cheekbones.

For fair skin tones, use a pearlescent.

For tan or olive skin, use golden colours to enhance your skin tone.

LIPSTICK

Place a small amount of clear lip gloss onto a flat surface and use a palette knife to mix in your chosen pigment until you have a smooth consistency.

Apply the gloss with a small lip brush.

Pigments can additionally be mixed with lipstick to tone down a bright colour or add a shimmer.

NAIL POLISH

You can also sprinkle pigment onto wet nails to add shimmer or mix them with clear nail polish to create a colour that’s all your own.

our new Toowoomba surgeons, each with different skillsets and from different backgrounds, all agree — they love their new life in Toowoomba and are impressed with the facilities at St Vincent’s Private Hospital — and, all are excited about their future in our community.

General and interventional cardiologist Dr Ryan Schrale hit the ground running when he arrived in town at the end of February.

Since then, he has performed several lifesaving procedures on patients at St Vincent’s and is impressed by the hospital’s state–of–the–art cardiac catheter laboratory facilities and the calibre of the nursing staff. Originally from Adelaide, Ryan and his wife Rebecca had lived in Townsville for the past nine years before deciding to relocate to Toowoomba.

commenced school earlier this year.

General surgeon, Dr Lee Ong brings skills not previously offered locally.

In addition to his general surgical training, Lee has completed an additional two years post fellowship training in oncoplastic breast surgery — an approach now widely recognised as the benchmark for best practice in breast cancer treatment.

Lee offers a full range of breast surgery procedures for benign and malignant conditions including immediate breast reconstruction; as well as cosmetic breast augmentation and gynaecomastia procedure.

He is able to speak, read and write in English, Mandarin (Hokkien and Cantonese dialects included) and Malay.

relocated to Toowoomba with his wife Bridie (a speech pathologist) and their two children to join friend and colleague Dr David Chettle in Evolve Women’s Health, the private practice Dr Chettle started last year.

Matthew plans to specialise in high–risk/complex pregnancies and laparoscopic surgery. He also has a special interest in endometriosis.

General surgeon, Dr Rouzbeh Jahangiri was already familiar with Toowoomba, having previously worked here several years ago during his general surgical training at the Base Hospital.

Rouzbeh and his wife Jane and their two young children have moved here from Tasmania where Rouzbeh worked at the Royal Hobart Hospital. Rouzbeh, who has a special interest in colorectal surgery, is excited to be back in town and setting up his own private practice.

THE POSITIVE POWER OF RITUALS

T

he year is certainly humming along!

Hopefully you’re kicking some goals, or at least conscious of working towards them.

To help me achieve my goals (and enjoy the process along the way), I love to set myself up with some little rituals.

To me, rituals are intentional habits with an emotional connection.

They are the little actions I can take to help me enjoy and manage getting tasks done.

They say the hardest part about starting a ritual is just that, starting.

A ritual for you can symbolise many things.

Balance, creativity, strength — anything that you feel you need to help you through.

And the actual ritual itself can be anything too.

Lighting a candle, meditating, having a cup of tea by yourself, dancing to loud music.

The intention sets the task and the action puts it into play.

Before going to sleep each night, set the intention for the day ahead.

This certainly helps to make the most of your time and you don’t go to sleep the next day thinking you haven’t accomplished anything.

Now, find those rituals that are going to help you get through those tasks and enjoy doing them.

For me, I love lighting incense whilst writing.

Playing music driving to and from school pick ups and dancing on a Friday night with my children in the kitchen.

For you, you might like to wake up and take five minutes to stretch, to practise deep breathing or just have a cup of tea in the sun before getting into your day.

We can all get caught in life’s traps.

Waking up and doing the same old routine, taking the same drive to work and doing the same daily habits.

But if we create rituals around these things, listening to inspiring music or podcasts, allocating time for a healthy lunch you’ve created, it allows us to look forward to (or at least enjoy) the small moments along the way. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

Delissa Kimmince

winning the Women’s T20 World Cup against England.

Born into a sporting family, Delissa started playing cricket when she was just eight years old, filling in for her eldest brother’s team when they were a player short.

She has since gone on to play in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) and a couple of world cups, which she said was an awesome experience.

“We get to travel to parts of the world we would never dream of going,” she said.

The sweetest moment of her career so far, was winning the Women’s T20 in the 2013/2014 season.

“It was just such a special moment; I was player of the final, so it felt good to contribute and win the game,” she said.

She recently returned from the

West Indies, where she and her Australian team mates beat England in the T20 World Cup. “I’ve never been more nervous in a game; the atmosphere was insane!”

Juggling full–time work with full–time training commitments (without extra pay) used to be a struggle for Delissa.

“I was always so burnt out and often forgot to enjoy the game (it became a chore), but now we’re looked after extremely well and can manage work and training hours.”

Having captained her side before, she believes a captain’s most important role is to lead by example and, by doing so, earning the respect of your team mates.

She said she doesn’t have a mentor, as such, but wouldn’t be where she is, if not for her father.

“My family have supported me so much and my dad was everything — from my dad, to my coach and my driver.”

IRISH CHEER KEVIN’S LIFESTYLE CHANGE WITH THE FITLAB

evin Creed has come a long way since starting the FitLab 25–week lifestyle challenge in November last year.

According to a second DEXA scan, he has lost 7.8 per cent body fat while maintaining his muscle mass and a healthier, balanced lifestyle.

Part of living a balanced lifestyle, is knowing you can enjoy things like a couple of beers on St Paddy’s Day without feeling guilty or anxious about your health.

“It’s about changing that ‘all or nothing’ mindset — I am a very ‘all or nothing’ kind of guy, but it’s important to find a happy medium.

“If you’re going to be piling on the calories, you have to do more in the gym,” Kevin said.

Being a true Irishman, there was no way Kevin was sitting out the

One of my favourite things about being a chef, is that there is no super predictable ‘typical’ day, but the general layout is as follows: Kickoff is at 6am, when I chuck on a Metallica album and get into baking.

By about 8am, the breakfast crowd flows in and 11.30am sees the lunch change–over and me maybe switching it up to some Rage Against the Machine.

Lunch service and dinner preparation

carries us through to 3pm, when the kitchen gets a couple of hours to itself for menu development and a big clean.

Dinner service is from 5.30pm; it is a sacred thing and my favourite part of every day.

We usually wrap up by 9pm, with cleaning, pack–down and planning for the next day, which means knock–off is around 10.30pm (a routine shared by my ever–loyal gang of kitchen pirates).

HOW ABOUT TOOWOOMBA’S FOOD SCENE?

I think it’s headed in the only good direction; up.

The past saw a focus on well–known fast foods, which I think is slowly shuffling toward higher–quality, family–owned eateries.

Now is an important time for diners to vote with their feet and support the little guys they want to see succeed.

If we do this as a community, the future is whatever we want it to be.

Ten years ago, I would have said: ‘easy, food has to be delicious’.

Knowing more now, my new answer would be that food must be delicious and sustainable to produce.

DO YOUR BIT FOR NATIVE WILDLIFE

here is something all of us can do T to help forestall extinctions of our native wildlife.

That was the message from terrestrial ecologist Greg Ford in a talk he gave at the Highfields Tavern on February 14, hosted by the Friends of Peacehaven Botanic Park.

We’ve heard the statistics: vast extinctions since Europeans settled this continent and existing species severely threatened by urban expansion and climate change.

Amid the doom and gloom, it’s easy to assume that trying to hold back the tide is pointless.

But, Greg urged people to think differently.

First, you need to understand the problems (which mostly relate to habitat and resources).

These showed bushland replaced or reduced by a sea of roofs; concrete and Colorbond where there used to be green paddocks.

Areas of remnant vegetation still exist, but most of the connectivity between them has been lost.

In combination with climate change — meaning higher temperatures and less rain but more intense downpours — this picture spells trouble for native wildlife.

So, what can you do?

Greg’s answer is that every little bit helps and you can start in your own back yard.

So, make your garden a safe place for wildlife, with shrubbery rather than a fence–to–fence lawn, deep leaf litter on the ground, and prickly plants for small creatures to hide in.

Create wet places as habitat for native animals and make sure bird baths are kept filled.

Provide breeding places, like nesting boxes for rosellas, sugar gliders or micro bats.

Grow tucker plants: grevilleas, eucalypts, acacias, callistemons and native grasses, to name a few.

In particular, think about connectivity.

Remember that many native animals can’t fly, so make sure your garden doesn’t block their transit

through the landscape; instead, design the garden to be a wildlife corridor.

And control your domestic pets — don’t let dogs chase wildlife and keep cats indoors at night.

Most importantly, spread the word.

Encourage your friends and neighbours to do their bit too — help change attitudes.

People must have a softer impact on the environment and it is in everyone’s power to play their part.

IMMUNISATION SAVES LIVES In 2017, 116.2 million children were immunised — the highest number ever reported

he World Health Organisation T (WHO) is again running its Immunisation Week campaign in an

attempt to educate people about the critical importance of immunisation.

This year’s campaign, which runs from April 24 to 30, will celebrate ‘Vaccine Heroes’ from around the world — parents, community members, health workers and innovators — who work to protect everyone through vaccination.

Immunisation prevents illness, disability and death from vaccine–preventable diseases like cervical cancer, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, whooping cough, polio, rotavirus diarrhoea, and many more.

Take polio as an example — a highly infectious viral disease that can cause irreversible paralysis.

This disease was targeted for global eradication, with 85 per cent of infants around the world receiving three doses of the polio vaccine in 2017.

As a result, polio has been stopped in all countries except three (the instability and conflict in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria have so far prevented the total eradication of the virus in these countries).

The famous 1998 study which claimed a possible link between a particular vaccine (the MMR vaccine) and autism, was found to be seriously flawed and fraudulent, leading to the paper being retracted.

There is no evidence of a link between MMR vaccine and autism or autistic disorders.

Vaccines are safe and the benefits of vaccination greatly outweigh the risks — serious injury or death is far more likely to be caused by a vaccine–preventable disease (like polio), than by the vaccine itself (even if you factor in the vaccine’s possible but unlikely side–effects).

By preventing the spread of disease (and possibly death), you will be saving not only your own life, but the lives of those around you too.

hear that generalisation a lot.

I hope it’s not true — because I’ve seen some bad ones in my time.

Really bad.

Whether it’s through laziness, inexperience or a slapdash approach to processes or accuracy, I’ve heard a number of horror stories across the industry.

I think customers deserve better.

I talk a lot about trust — I think that’s the cornerstone of any

relationship whether it’s a couple, a vendor and an agent or a landlord and their property manager.

I’ve had professional dealings with people where I’ve been misled or even down-right lied to — and I don’t like it.

They’ve lost me forever.

That’s why my team knows the value I put on being honest with our clients. I stress the importance of being honourable and accountable

and sometimes that means delivering bad news.

But, if you sugar–coat the problem or shy away from the realities of the issue, you’re only going to compound the trouble — and then YOU become the ‘bad guy’ instead of the solution.

I’ve been yelled at by clients and I’ve received beautiful bouquets of flowers in the same week.

I treat all of it as a learning opportunity.

If I’ve absolutely nailed it and the client couldn’t be happier — fantastic, let’s take what we did right and repeat it again and again and again until it becomes part of the office culture.

But, just as tellingly, if we drop the ball we have to learn from that as well…and then examine why it happened and how we’re going to prevent it from occurring again.

I make mistakes, my staff can make mistakes (we all do in life) — through lack of hours in the day or miscommunication, sometimes it happens.

A REMINDER TO CHECK YOUR SMOKE ALARM

SMOKIN’ INFO or most people, the presence of a F smoke alarm in their home goes mostly unnoticed.

They are small, unobtrusive devices stuck to the ceiling and (for the most part) they never draw attention to themselves.

Because of this, it can be easy to forget about their maintenance — an oversight that can have dire consequences for your family.

Smoke alarms are an invaluable early–warning system, but only if they work.

During the month of April, take

the time to test your alarms and make whatever repairs you need to.

Although battery–powered models should monitor their own levels and warn you if the battery is low, you cannot disregard the risk of mechanical or other failures and should satisfy yourself that all is in good working order.

Saving lives can be as simple as changing a battery.

It’s important to note that, as of January 2017, new legislation has governed the type, positioning and interconnectedness of smoke alarms.

Queenslanders will have 10 years to comply with the new legislation, but will have to maintain their existing systems in the meantime.

Currently, there are two main types of smoke alarms found throughout Queensland homes: ■ Ionisation alarms — These alarms react to particles emitted in a fire and are best at detecting fast–flaming fires that don’t emit a lot of visible smoke.

■ Photoelectric alarms — These alarms are triggered when smoke disrupts a light beam and are best at detecting smoky and smouldering fires (most house fires tend to smoke and smoulder long before bursting into flame).

Studies have shown photoelectric alarms typically respond to smoky fires within three to five minutes (while ionisation alarms can take up to 20 minutes or more).

It is for this reason, among others, that ionised alarms will need to be replaced by interconnected photoelectric alarms by 2027.

Flowering house plants, like the moth orchid, are beautiful.

If kept in a well–drained pot, water orchids once a week.

ALOE VERA

Easy to care for, this plant only needs to be watered once a week.

Thin, curling leaves are a sure sign your aloe isn’t getting enough water and has started using its own moisture.

ECHIVERIA

This species of succulent is particularly popular and can be found at most nurseries.

Almost like Goldilocks, it doesn’t like to be too dry or too wet, but just right.

forces during the First World War. Although the campaign failed in its military objectives, the actions of Australian and New Zealand forces during the campaign left a powerful legacy at home and abroad.

In his report, the British war correspondent Ellis Ashmead–Bartlett described the arrival of the ANZACs in 1915.

“They waited neither for orders nor for the boats to reach the beach but, springing out into the sea, they waded ashore and, forming some sort of rough line, rushed straight at the flashes of the enemy’s rifles,” he said.

Despite suffering tremendous losses — more than 8000 ANZACs died in the eight–month–long campaign — the soldiers were seen to have displayed great courage, endurance, initiative and discipline.

Australian war historian, Charles

Bean, later popularised the legend of the ANZAC spirit in his book ANZAC to Amiens, by saying these soldiers stood (and still stand) for reckless valour in a good cause, for enterprise, resourcefulness, fidelity, comradeship and endurance that will never know defeat.

In the years following the Gallipoli campaign, ANZAC Day developed into a broad commemoration of all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

It is a day to remember not only the brave soldiers at Gallipoli, but everyone who served, contributed and suffered in the name of peace and national security.

All across the nation on Thursday, April 25, Australians will gather for commemorative services at dawn and marches throughout the rest of the day to celebrate the ANZAC legend.

I am a contemporary floral artist. I paint from my studio in the bushland north of Sydney. My studio is a large, sun filled space that enjoys morning and afternoon light. My trestle tables overflow with a collection of fresh and dried flowers - essential for my mood and subject matter.

Describe your style?

Representational. I paint flowers on a grand scale to immerse viewers in the wonder of detail and complex structures.

What inspires you?

My garden, gardens everywhere and the people who tend them. The change of seasons and the potential to refresh the spirit. Flowers and nature are joyful and

educative. There’s always something new to see in nature. Before I start painting each day, I take a nature walk. I listen to the birdsong, notice the beetles and chat to my neighbours about their gardens.

When did you start painting?

My world exploded into colourful possibility after winning a box of 96 Derwent Pencils at 6 years of age.

How has your painting evolved?

My father was a technical drawer and a nature lover. He encouraged me from a young age to observe nature and press flowers in the pages of books. I was fascinated with the delicate structures revealed within their dry, papery petals.

For a time, I painted botanical studies.

Then I studied Fine Arts Oil Painting and explored various creative avenues,

before returning to florals on a freer, larger style.

Why do you enjoy painting?

Each painting is a challenge - to reveal something unique about that flower, like a portrait does for a person. I love unexpected moments when a colour combination turns out to be just right.

Some highlights of your artistic life?

Creating works for Floriade to help them celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2017 and having my painting featured in Home Beautiful magazine.

What is your dream goal or project?

Visit grand gardens of Italy, do painting classes and host an exhibition there.

What do you like about Toowoomba?

I hear the gardens are amazing!

his month, celebrate the finalists of the 8th annual Future Visions art competition, held by the USQ School of Arts & Communication (Visual Arts).

Year 11 and 12 students from all over the Darling Downs and Southeast Queensland regions have submitted their artwork for a chance to win one of many great prizes to further their budding art careers.

Showcasing the students’ diverse, emerging and dynamic approaches to creating art, the annual award and exhibition continues to attract a wide range of highly talented up–and–coming artists.

Open to any visual art student in Year 11 or 12, the award accepts submissions of any form of art, using any medium.

With submissions for the award now being closed, it’s time for the second stage of this competition to take off: the exhibition and prize–giving stage.

Starting at the end of April and continuing throughout the whole month of May, the finalists’ art will be exhibited at USQ’s Arts Gallery, with each finalist receiving a certificate of selection.

Among the works displayed, will also be the winner of the competition, who will be announced at the exhibition opening night on April 30, starting at 5pm.

The over–all winner will receive $800, followed by a second prize of $500 and a third prize of $200.

There will also be an opportunity to walk away with the Encouragement Award — a bursary to the McGregor Art Winter Retreat in July, valued at $695.

Take the time to support the emerging artists of the region; perhaps you know one or two of them and would like to encourage them, or perhaps you’ll come across an artist unknown to you, whose art will steal your heart.

ANIMALISTIC Meet Aileesha Detmers — ballpoint pen extraordinaire ileesha is a contemporary A animalier artist — in other words, her artwork is grounded in

her ability to draw animals in a realistic way.

“My practice is about being true to character and bringing my subjects to life through physical and psychological observation,” she explained.

She wants her artwork to have a relationship with its viewers, akin to that of a human–pet relationship.

“My love for animals is a core part of who I am as a person.

“I find our connection with animals fascinating and I am a firm believer

that we are equals.”

She predominantly uses ballpoint pen to create her life–like sketches.

“I’ve experimented with many mediums throughout my time at university and ballpoint pen was by far the most rewarding as it is a very unforgiving medium.”

Aileesha said she almost always follows the same routine when beginning a new artwork, starting with the nose and working her way outwards.

“I think (for me) it helps my perspective; by starting in the middle I can see the image grow and watch as each individual feature

comes to life, one step after another.”

She mostly enjoys working on artworks based on horses and dogs, due to their often misinterpreted emotional cues.

Some of her artwork was recently commissioned and installed at local dog–friendly bar, Barwunder.

If Aileesha could be commissioned by anyone in the world, she’d choose Dick van Dyke.

“I’d be interested to know what breed his dog would be; I think he would be such a loving owner.

“It would be an honour to have him be a fan of my work, because I’ve always been a fan of his.”

THE AUSTRALIAN CLIPPER CLUB IS COMING TO CROWS NEST

HISTORY ON WHEELS rows Nest Tourist Park will be C playing host to a rare and exciting event this April when the

Australian Flxible Clipper Club arrives for its annual Easter Rally.

It will be the first time the rally will be held in Queensland, with members expected to attend from all over the country.

In 1948, Sir Reginald Ansett of the Flxible Company of Loudonville, Ohio, USA, bought the first Flxible Clipper Bus to Australia.

Revolutionary for its time, with a low centre of gravity, the vehicles

have been icons ever since — 131 vehicles were built in Australia from December 1950 to June 1960 to become touring coaches for outback exploration from the 1950s through to the 1970s.

Although many of the buses have been lost or scrapped since then, a handful have been lovingly restored as extremely rare and unique vehicles and motorhomes.

These restorations don’t come cheap to the owners, but it’s worth it when you see the quality of these vehicles up close and the unique

stories they tell.

While some of the buses were used as outback safari vehicles, other uses included school runs, privately hired vehicles (some featured in movies and music videos) and, most famously, as tour bus for rock band AC/DC from 1950 to 1975.

More than 75 members are expected to turn up to the rally, along with over 20 individual Flxible Clipper Busses.

The public is invited to attend the event for a chance to see and touch history and talk to the owners who have invested their lives in restoring these majestic vehicles.

Motoring enthusiasts, nostalgic pensioners, young families and even rock and roll fans are encouraged to come and attend this rare opportunity.

Think about it, there’s a big difference between the maximum number of people you can fit in an elevator and what’s a more suitable number.

So, it’s often best to drop your tyre pressure to a little less.

If the Max PSI is 35, then try around the 32PSI mark.

It will make a world of difference — and actually help save the world — because the right air pressure for your vehicle will also help regulate and reduce fuel usage.

And that has to be a good thing.

hen the premium world entered the coupe–styled SUV realm, it was pure Kardashian style.

All bum, but no talent.

Yet, the genre has evolved and Audi has just released a new flagship SUV, the Q8.

It’s derived from the marque’s own family wagon — the seven–seater Q7 — and comes with a sleeker, sharper suit, a coupe roofline and a few dimensional adjustments to give it a sportier stance.

Audi’s Q wagons to date have been stodgy looking devices but the Q8 is a muscular, edgy thing, with

blistered guards, frameless side windows and a much trimmer set of glutes than rivals.

The more compact body doesn’t compromise interior space for five.

Seating is luxurious and in the back stalls there’s ample, adjustable legroom and decent headroom.

Boot volume is about 15 per cent less than Q7 in five–seater mode, but still expansive.

sweet and touching film, make sure you also bring some tissues with you if you’re going to watch Five Feet Apart.

Seventeen-year-old Stella (Hayley Lu Richardson) has been in and out of hospital her entire life due to Cystic Fibrosis, alongside her best friend Poe (Moises Arias).

She spends her days between strictly adhering to her regiment, creating an app for fellow CF patients, and making YouTube videos of her experiences.

When she meets Will (Cole Sprouse), who seems to have blatant disregard for his regiment and trial treatment, Stella’s self-described ‘control issues’ drive her to strike a deal with the boy — Will can draw her if he adheres to his regiment.

Not being able to trust Will to do everything off his

own back, Stella starts doing all their treatments and exercises alongside him — usually via video call as they cannot be less than six feet apart due to the risk of infection between fellow CF patients — and the pair begin falling for each other.

The young actors do extremely well with the story; there is no jarring over-acting or clumsily-given lines.

And while this film may not pique your interest based on synopsis alone, it has remarkable depth in reality and is highly recommended, even for the most love-cynical among us.

Five Feet Apart isn’t just a story about two teenagers falling in love.

It is a story about living life despite what it throws at you.

It is a story about growing up.

It is a story about sacrifice and coming to terms with loss.

It is a story about touching people while you can, laughing while you can, experiencing life while you can, loving while you can.

Overall, it is a beautiful story to get lost in for a couple of hours.

THE SILENT PATIENT BY ALEX MICHAELIDES

his psychological thriller immerses the reader in the story so much that it is easy to lose track of time, astonishingly despite a lack of high-adrenaline action.

Renowned painter Alicia seemed to have an ideal life with a husband who adored her as much as she did him.

Until she shot him in the face five times one night and never spoke another word.

That was six years ago, and forensic psychotherapist Theo has been intrigued by the case since then – particularly Alicia’s silence – and is convinced he can treat the woman successfully where all others have failed.

So when an opening comes up at the institution where

Alicia is being held, Theo applies for the job and starts Alicia’s treatment.

In an astonishing debut, Michaelides writes with such skill that the reader is as hooked in to discovering why Alicia is silent as much as Theo is.

The only part of the book that could be called ‘slow’ if you so desired, is Part 1 which is mostly dedicated to founding the story and setting.

Even then, however, it is short and to-the-point enough that the reader does not get bored, and from then on the plot continues at breakneck speed.

Unlike many thrillers, all of the possible answers seem realistically likely at one point or another in the story — even to the point that the reader could believe they have it all figured out within the first several chapters — yet the twist is incredible and completely unforeseen.

It is evident Michaelides thought out his plot and story structure well, and did his research thoroughly.

Despite Millennials being mocked

for their love of all things avo, the avocado has been popular in Western society for hundreds of years — and among South American tribes for much longer than that.

With its origins in southern Mexico, avocados were cultivated from the Rio Grande to central Peru long before the arrival of Europeans.

Evidence found in central Mexico suggests that almost 10,000 years ago, people were already eating wild avocados, with Meso–American tribes like the Inca, Olmec and Maya believed to have started domesticating avocado trees around 5000 years ago.

It wasn’t until the 16th century that Spanish explorers became the first Europeans to eat avocados.

From that point on, the world slowly fell in love with this adorable stone fruit.

Avocados first made it to Australia in 1840 (in seed form) and were planted in Sydney’s Royal Botanical Gardens.

Over the next 110 years or so, Australia continued to import the seeds and plants until a local industry began to take shape.

Today, the two main varieties of avocado grown in Australia, are Hass (in season from May to January) and Shepard (from February to May).

With avocado orchards spread across climatically diverse growing regions — from Queensland to Western Australia and Tasmania — Australian producers can now ensure a year–round supply of your favourite super food.

A COUNTRY ROMANCE

A fated meeting at a friend’s house, a magical proposal, and a perfect wedding day

hen Georgia Lupton and W Lachlan Smith met at a friend’s house party three years ago, they

immediately shared a connection.

After spending their first date at the Eat Street Markets, their mutual love of food and dogs soon made it clear that they’d fallen in love.

“We are always on the same page about everything and we never argue,” Georgia said, adding that they fit in well with each other’s friends and families too.

While in Bali for a wedding, Lachlan surprised Georgia with a special proposal.

“We spent the end of our trip in Ubud.

“Lachy had organised for our bed to have ‘will you marry me’ written in rose petals.

“Never in my life did I think I’d ever have a proposal so romantic,” Georgia said.

On September 28 last year, they finally tied the knot, with Georgia taking Lachlan’s last name.

They had the wedding at Georgia’s parents’ home, opting for a rustic feel with simple table decorations and a colour scheme of rose gold.

With help from family and friends, the couple spent roughly nine months preparing the property for their big day.

This included replacing old fences, levelling ground, seeding, irrigating, planting flowers, and more.

Many of their decorative items were hand–made and their flower arrangements were put together by a family member.

“Having the wedding at my family home was special to me, as I’d lived there for 22 years,” Georgia said.

After all that preparation, their wedding day was a relaxed event.

“We wanted everyone to sit back and enjoy catching up with friends and family — no arranged table seating and minimal formalities,” Georgia said, adding that everything went well on the day, despite a little bit of rain.

The newlyweds had a mini week–long honeymoon in Byron Bay to unwind after the wedding, but will be travelling to Europe this July for their big one.

Georgia said their immediate future holds a couple of renovations to their home, more travelling and, maybe, some more dogs.

IS WORK/LIFE BALANCE ACHIEVABLE?

hat is this mythical work/life balance? Is it the 38–hour week with weekends off? Is it the four–day, 10–hour–day week with three days off?

There is no perfect, ‘one–size–fits–all’ formula, as we all have different priorities and different objectives in life.

The hospitality world is a labour–intensive industry that offers good opportunities for career advancement, but we also have to accept that it is a demanding industry requiring full commitment and hard work.

There are times when hard decisions have to be made, whether to remain in the comfort zone and continue with the achieved quality of life or move to a totally new assignment (including overseas or interstate) where there are considerably more challenges, especially for those with family in terms of accommodation, schooling for children, communication, etc.

But, in the end, it is anticipated that the various transfers and new experiences will provide bigger and better jobs/positions and income.

In a hospitality career–driven culture, we have witnessed first–hand how the demand,

pressure, stress and fatigue accumulates when we (and our people) do not have the working and family life running in sync.

TPD SUPERANNUATION

You may have TPD (Total and Permanent Disablement) cover under your superannuation policy.

Here are six tips to help you get things moving in the right direction.

1. The starting point is to find out how many superannuation policies you have and which ones have TPD cover.

Some policies can have hundreds of thousands of dollars of cover, whereas some can be quite limited in the benefit available to you.

2. There is a good chance your super policy will contain insurance for you in the event that you are permanently unable to work due to an accident or illness.

3. The insurance policy contains an important definition of total and permanent disablement and they

vary from policy to policy. Generally, they say something like: ‘you are unlikely to be able to engage in gainful employment for which you are reasonably qualified by education, training or experience’.

4. Most arguments involve whether you are unable to return to work, having regard to ‘your past work experience’. This issue needs to be handled very carefully and requires the assistance of a solicitor experienced in handling insurance claims under TPD policies.

5. Medical evidence needs to be obtained and presented to the TPD insurer to demonstrate that you meet the definition of ‘totally and permanently disabled for work’.

This evidence is critical and usually your claim will rise or fall based on the quality of this evidence.

6. Having acted for (but mainly against) insurance companies in the past 29 years, experience tells me that your prospects of success will often hinge upon how well the insurer’s key questions have been answered.

This one is shaping up to be a very exciting event for all ages. Interest in pavilion entries are increasing with quite a few new sections being introduced. These include things like woodcraft and metalcraft, where items can be made out of all kinds of odds and ends, a costume competition, a tug of war, a scarecrow competition, a truck pull and a decorated bike. The very proactive entertainment committee has organised quite a few new entertainments for the younger generation.

Quite interesting will be the chainsaw races on Saturday. This year is to be a demonstration event but is working towards a nominations event for our 150th show in 2020. We have the Knowles Pavilion set up for the normal schedule entries, The Knox Pavilion which will house the school displays, the lego and several trade displays, the remainder of which will be set up on the newly secured Knowles Pavilion veranda.

Beside the Knox is a new pavilion which is to be officially named and opened on show Friday and it will house Fruit and Vegies, guinea pigs, birds and poultry. Our committee decided we should try and get some of those displays up and going again. In the area outside this building will be Miniature Goats and across the roadway from them will be the Sheep DogTrials. For the last few years and this year included they have been the largest in Southern Queensland and usually go into the third day, as a matter of interest the Australian Championships are being held here at the showgrounds in September this year. Directly behind the Knox Pavilion is the Stud Beef Cattle section. This is a very interesting section which goes for the two days. We have a large horse section which has to keep moving or it runs out of time. Entry numbers are usually quite good with stable facilities available.

In front of the Knox Pavilion is a new outdoor trade display area also. Up the front of the grounds are the usual trade displays and other pieces of entertainment. Fireworks will be happening both nights which are sponsored by Graham Winters Smash Repairs. Lawn mower races will be held Saturday night after the fireworks. We hope that whoever attends the show enjoys themselves and will return again next year.
