FIRST of all — happy new year. We had so many wonderful adventures in 2017, and there’s so much to look forward to in 2018. This month is exciting for not just our local area, but for the country as a whole — we get to celebrate Australia Day. January 26 brings together all Australians to enjoy this beautiful, sunburnt land that we love so much. We hope all of our Stylers are getting their loved ones together and celebrate our wonderful, multicultural nation later this month. In this edition, we catch up with homegrown Olympic long-distance runner Patrick Tiernan (p8 and 9), who shares his love for his country and sport. Style is also graced by the artwork of Courtney-Beth Knowles (p10 and 11), who shares the touching story behind a particular original piece, Dear Daniel. We’re excited to introduce a new fashion columnist, Felicity Wright of Wright Style (p21). This lovely lass is sure to be a fun, classy addition to the Style repertoire. Be sure to head to p35, where nutrition columnist Nivard Nelson does our local wine region justice. Check out our beautiful wedding spread (p52 and 53) for a glamorous local couple, and set up your social calendar for the new year from the What’s On calendar (p60 and 61). We hope you enjoy the January edition of Style — as always, we love hearing your feedback, so don’t hesitate to contact us on social media. Our best,

Toowoomba boy

races ahead BY JESSICA KRAMER

TOOWOOMBA IS KNOWN FOR MANY A POPULAR OR WELL-KNOWN PERSONALITY BUT, AT ONLY 23, THIS ATHLETE IS GETTING AHEAD OF THE REST

T

he Garden City has many a resident who is proud of the several “claims to fame” Toowoomba boasts. Well-known film and television personalities Sonia Kruger, Geoffrey Rush and Judy Morris hail from our city, as well as singer Gina Jeffreys and other notable people. However, overarching all other well-known people are the number of sports personalities and athletes to whom we lay claim. One of these is 23-year-old runner Patrick Tiernan. Tiernan won bronze at the NCAAs in the 5000m last year, and made the Olympic qualifier – earning him a spot in the Rio Olympics. “It was unbelievable,” Tiernan says of competing at the 2016 Olympics. “That was my first Australian team, so to be able to pull on the green and gold for the first time on the world’s biggest stage was a memory I will cherish forever.” This year found the athlete competing at the IAAF World Championships in London, while Athletics Australia described his international 2017 season as “stunning”. Tiernan made third-best in Australian history at 3000m and fourth at 5000m, while a 30-second improvement at the 10,000m made him number three all-time. Not to mention the thrill of working with Nike. “My agent Nic Bideau was able to line up a contract for me with Nike Australia

back in January,” Tiernan says. “It’s been an awesome year running under Nike. “They take care of all their athletes and really put on a show when it comes to the big meets throughout the year. “It’s a pretty cool feeling to be able to call myself a professional athlete now, and I have Nic and Nike to thank for that.” Tiernan started distance running when he was young. “My grade four teacher Tom Bradbury had me come to one of his

squad’s training sessions back in 2003 after seeing me running around before school one day. “That sparked a nine-year athlete/coach relationship, and we still keep in close contact today.” Tiernan has always enjoyed running – partly for the competitive aspect – but made the jump from just another sport to a passion in 2012. “Up until that point, I played cricket throughout the summers, and ran in the winter,” he says. “I moved to Brisbane for university in 2012, and that’s when I started

taking my running much more seriously.” Now Tiernan lives in Pennsylvania in the US. “I was offered an athletic scholarship to Villanova University in 2013, so I took up that offer and saw out my four-year degree over there,” he says. “My running was improving a lot as well, so I asked my college coach, Marcus O’Sullivan, if he would be happy to continue coaching me professionally.” However, Toowoomba will always hold a special place in Tiernan’s heart since moving from Longreach when he was only three or four – and he loved every second

of growing up in the Garden City. “I’d say a lot of my best memories would come out of high school,” Tiernan says. “I had a really close group of mates during that time and most weekends we would get together and find something to do. “A fond memory of mine is going out to Crows Nest Falls one weekend with that group.” Tiernan describes his home town as one of the most close-knit communities in the world. “I haven’t been to a place quite like it in my travels to date,” he says.

“I always look forward to running when I come home, because there’s a 99 per cent chance that I’ll bump into someone I know on my route, which is really quite a rare trait that the city has.” Tiernan’s next goal is the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. “Obviously I have other goals along the way, with the upcoming Commonwealth Games being the main focus, but at the end of the day, the Olympics is the big stage for us. “You want to be able to compete with the best when the time comes.”

Dear Daniel BY CLARE STANDFAST

MEET LOCAL ARTIST COURTNEY-BETH KNOWLES, WHO CREATED A UNIQUE ARTWORK IN MEMORY OF HER BROTHER, WHO PASSED AWAY FROM SIDS

A

t just 23 years old, local artist Courtney-Beth Knowles is known for the variety in her creations — namely, her painting and drawing, as well as sculptural pieces and ceramics. Her works, though, are known to feature narratives, playing out stories, dabbling in elements of theatrics. However, one of her projects in particular, known as Dear Daniel, tells a very special story. “In this project, my aim was to explore my relationship with my brother Daniel, who died when he was three months old,” Courtney-Beth says. Daniel died as a result of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or more commonly known as SIDS. “He would be 24 in a few months — a year older than me,” she remembers. “Family is important to me — I have three brothers and a sister, living, (and) I love them unconditionally. “While Daniel died before I was born, I have a connection to him. “My mother and father never shied away from talking about him, or hanging pictures of him on the wall. “Daniel was a part of our life, even if he wasn’t with us.”

10 | January 2018

Her art project, Dear Daniel, is a unique nod to her brother, with countless paper cranes coming out of a suitcase, many of which are suspended from the roof. “Cranes symbolise different things in different cultures, from alertness, protection, love, longevity, wisdom, peace, health to freedom,” Courtney-Beth notes. “In Japan, there is a tradition of folding a thousand paper cranes for newborn babies as a wish for a thousand years of happiness and prosperity. “In Chinese legends, cranes carry the souls of the dead to the heavens above. “The crane taking souls to heaven echoes the occidental (Western) tale of a stork delivering babies. “While these are symbols from two distinct cultures, the imagery of both in relation to Daniel appealed to me. “The cranes in the suitcase are both a gift to Daniel and, in the case of the flying cranes, to symbolise his life that was cut short, with his soul being carried to heaven. “The suitcase is a parcel but also a metaphor for travel and life as an extension of that.” For Courtney-Beth, the death of her

brother was never ignored, and her parents talked freely about him. While a topic very close to her heart, she has enjoyed the feedback she has received from her highly emotive and unique piece of work. “It’s been great hearing the different responses I have had from people about my work,” Courtney-Beth adds. “Those who have said that they are surprised that I have chosen such a taboo subject to those who have been moved to share with me about their siblings or children who have died. “Our lives are never truly extinguished when we live on in the memories of those that knew and loved us.” Courtney-Beth finds that art is an experience and that, like her Dear Daniel project, art is drawn on from one’s experiences — it influences, and is influenced by what we see and hear. “The process is important to me — coming up with ideas and experimenting,” Courtney-Beth says. “And, the happy accidents that often happen along the way. “It’s also something I use to relax.” Courtney-Beth has been a local since she was four-years-old, and has earned www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

herself a Certificate IV in Visual Arts and a Diploma in Visual Arts from Toowoomba TAFE and a Bachelor of Creative Art (Visual Art) from the University of Southern Queensland. She first showed her work at the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery, where she painted a portrait and submitted it to the Toowoomba Art Society and The Chronicle Junior Art Expo. From this, she was awarded Best Picture and the Art Society Bursary. Including elements of Toowoomba in her work, Courtney-Beth has painted a www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

series of portraits based on sketches of people she observed in the Grand Central food court. Alongside this, she has developed a continuation of the Dear Daniel project as well. “Looking more at mourning children as a whole rather than focusing just on Daniel, I folded several hundred modular paper flowers into the shape of burial mound,” Courtney-Beth reflects. This young creative is looking forward to the future. Her 2018 plans include enrolling in a

Bachelor of Creative Arts (Honours), with a multi-disciplinary degree in Visual Arts and Theatre. “I simply couldn’t imagine my life not creating,” Courtney-Beth declares. “I come from a creative family, although we all use different mediums. “My parents have always encouraged our dreams and have always told us that we could accomplish anything we set our minds to.” To keep viewing this spectacular artist’s work, visit her Facebook page, Courtney-Beth Knowles. TOOWOOMBA ON AUSTRALIA DAY BY LISA MACHIN, COLUMNIST

O

ne of my strongest memories of going to school in Toowoomba was standing on stage, little chest puffed out alongside all the other kids as we drew huge dramatic breaths and belted out (a tad off key I might add) T-double-o-double -yoooo-doubleo-M-B-Ayyyyyy, it’s the name of a beautiful city, that we all live in today.” The very name itself is wild, and always provides a chuckle when our

visiting Irish relatives take aim at the pronunciation. There’s much debate about the origin of the word Toowoomba, some believe it’s a corruption of the indigenous word ‘tchwampa’ — the swamp. Others argue it stems from ‘choowoom’ meaning native melon and others still say it comes from ‘woomba woomba’ meaning ‘reeds in the swamp’. Whatever the origin, there’s

something very Australian and very special about this city of ours perched on the Great Dividing Range, which dishes up scorching summers and strange fog-encased winters. My dad used to declare with glee on a winter’s day, “Look at that kids — fog so thick you couldn’t hear a dog bark.” So what place does our Garden City play in the modern Aussie narrative? It’s come a long way since my teenage days when the top forms of entertainment included sliding down the Webb Park hill on a cardboard box. Theatre, lounge bars, street art, lane-way cafes, more culture than a pot of yoghurt and a general ‘changing of the guard’ feel — these things to me reflect the modern Aussie narrative. Today’s Australian is a connected and informed one, and it’s been lovely to see out city evolve accordingly, without losing that old-school charm that grounds us. So to celebrate on January 26 this year I might order a turmeric latte on almond milk (hipster darling!), attach a GoPro to my head (like the modern technology-crazed Aussie) and slide down Webb Park hill on a cardboard box yelling “viva Toowoomba” in celebration.

Q & A with

How did you discover your love for pottery? It wasn’t until I became a visual arts student at USQ that I had really encountered the making of ceramics. I have always felt drawn to art and creating, and the way that ceramics is so hands-on and process-based with so much potential really drew me to it. What is it that you particularly enjoy about it? There are so many elements within ceramics, as with any other discipline, and learning each of these styles of ceramics is so inspiring and exciting to me. Wheelthrowing is slowly becoming my favoured process as I continue to learn and practice and improve on my skills. The discipline that is required for wheelthrowing, the control I have over the clay yet being so therapeutic; it has really taken over my making practice. What was the inspiration for your work Unveiling of Breath (pictured)? I love creating functional work,

ceramics artist, Tiffany Struthers

creating things which people can use and will become a part of their lives, their households. Unveiling of Breath is a series of work with a subtle shape and curve in the forms whose focus is the bold colour of the glaze with a simple pattern unveiling the clay underneath. My inspiration for this series was the patterns and colours of India and south east Asia in a simplified design, coming from my time in Nepal two years ago. The bright and distinct colour in the buildings and fabrics that I saw were expressed in the ceramic pieces and a simplified drawing of my favourite Mehndi design. What was the process for creating this work? I made the work through a process called slip casting, which involves making a plaster mould of the forms and using a liquid clay to create the pieces. I then used a wax resist method to create the pattern in the glaze, drawing them on by hand. Do you dabble in other creative media as well? I have done work in painting and printmaking before honing in on ceramics and would like to continue working on my skills as I create a studio at home.

WHO’S NEW IN TOWN Style meets Dr Nicola Hulme-Peake of Pure Dental Toowoomba WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

I graduated from Dundee University in 1991 and I spent four years working within the hospital and general dental practice NHS system in the UK. I moved to Toowoomba in 1995 under the Commonwealth Dental Scheme. My husband and I opened Peake Dental Practice in 1999, followed by Dental

Elegance in 2006. Following a personal and business separation early this year, a new path had to be found. With the fantastic support of my friends and patients I have opened my own dental practice, Pure Dental Toowoomba.

Your relationship with your patients is paramount. If you can have empathy for your patients whilst providing professional, high quality dentistry in a supportive, caring environment, you will build the trust of your clientele and your business will naturally grow.

WHAT DO YOU PRIDE YOURSELF ON?

My passion for my industry and my love of dentistry and my patients. I love improving the quality of my patients’ oral health and seeing how that improves their general wellbeing. he role of vision in learning is often overlooked by parents and teachers. Vision is more than just looking at the board; we are asking children to put their two eyes on a word and then quickly move to the next word and the next. We are not born with this ability to coordinate our eyes — it is a skill that needs to be learnt, just as we have to learn to crawl and walk. This skill is called tracking, and although it is not the only skill we need for reading, it is a really important one! If a child struggles with tracking, they will tire more quickly and lose concentration on tasks in the classroom, especially near tasks like reading. This in turn slows their reading development and therefore their progress in learning. At Somerville Merrin Neilson, we look at how well your child can see the letter chart and measure their tracking, to comprehensively check their vision. Have your child’s vision examined and give them the best start for the new school year. Visit the clinic at 428 Hume St, Centenary Heights, or call 4635 7340.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS THIS AUSTRALIA DAY BY FELICITY WRIGHT, PERSONAL STYLIST AND STYLE FASHION COLUMNIST

T

he holiday season has come to a close. We have all done our fair share of gift giving, carol singing, ridiculously tasty food devouring and unattainable resolution making. Now it’s time to sit back, relax, and enjoy a chilled out Australia Day. But for us women, no matter the holiday, the age old question still arises – “what am I going to wear?” You really can’t go past the simple, easy breezy summer dress.

It can provide colour, pattern, instant style and be thrown on at the last minute. Unfortunately, we all have areas of our body we aren’t overly happy about — arms, knees, bust too big, bust too small, tummy, and the list goes on. So here are a few tips to help you find the perfect casual dress, keeping a few of ‘problem’ areas in mind:

ARMS

Off-the-shoulder is huge this season. Look for styles where the fabric is one

piece that floats around the bust and arms as opposed to the fitted sleeves.

KNEES

It’s all about the midi length. The midi typically hits at a flattering point of the calf and still allows you to show off your cute summer shoes.

SMALL BUST

Ruffles, lace, panelling — anything that creates volume and interest around the bust area always works well.

LARGE BUST

Keep it clean and simple, with nothing too voluminous around the bust. Scoop or v-necklines, vertical patterns all help to draw the eye down and give the appearance of a smaller bust.

STOMACH

It is almost human nature for anyone who doesn’t want to draw attention to a body part to swamp it with fabric. This is not always the answer. In this case you need to look for clean lines around the torso, anything with darts, a fine drawstring to help give the illusion of a well defined waist. Big and baggy will only make things appear more unflattering. Sit back on Australia Day celebrating our beautiful country, knowing you look a million dollars.

style | fashion LOOKING COOL WHEN THE HEAT IS ON IS SIMPLE IF YOU FOLLOW OUR SUMMER FASHION GUIDE

EASY, BREEZY STYLE BY CASSIE ANDERSON

D

ressing for summer seems a lot easier than fussing with layers of winter clothes, but finding the line between staying cool and dressing appropriately isn’t always easy when it’s over 30 degrees outside. It’s all about thinking strategically and using some sneaky shortcuts to ensure maximum breeziness. Natural fibres are a lot more breathable than anything synthetic, so look for lightweight styles in cotton, linen and bamboo. Being natural means they will be a lot less stretchy, so go for something bigger in size.

That extra room will allow the air to circulate a lot better, keeping your body temperature down. High temperatures, combined with high humidity, can make life uncomfortable so it’s important to keep your shoes open and as flat as possible. Make sure they are broken in before you start wearing them – there’s nothing worse than swollen and sore feet. Look for clothes that offer protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays. The more skin that is covered, the better. Long, wide leg pants or a maxi dress

will offer better protection than short styles. Cotton dresses or tops with long billowing sleeves are a sun smart option. Clothes that are lighter in colour are more suited to hot weather — dark colours naturally absorb more light than they reflect, so more heat is retained. Hats are a classic and stylish option to protect your head and face from the sun. And though a hat might seem like it will keep in the heat, protecting your scalp, face and neck from the sun will keep you cooler. Look for hats that are woven and have ventilation points, allowing air to escape. Men, the rise in temperature is no excuse to spend all summer in board shorts, singlets and thongs. Use the heat as an opportunity to incorporate some colour, new fabrics and styles into your wardrobe. Try a well-cut linen or light cotton shirt for nights out. Switch the jeans for cotton chinos in light colours and roll up the bottoms for extra air circulation. Stay cool.

GETTING A STEP AHEAD Shoe trends for 2018 are set to be better than ever with bold colours and funky embellishments

I

f the spring/summer 2018 fashion shows said anything, it was that shoes will be a statement this year. Say goodbye to dressed-up crocs (thank goodness), and say hello to embellished kitten heels, colour, and a splash of glitter. Remember those gloriously strappy heels and sandals that had a short life in 2014/5? 2018 will be the year where they make a massive come-back, adding straps all the way to the knees for some styles. Pompoms and beading are also coming in strong, both as an embellishment for these funky sandals and for other footwear. Slides also have no sign of disappearing in 2018, but instead are dressed up with bold colours and funky elements.

Think pompoms, clear plastic spheres, acrylic flowers. A huge 2017 trend was sock boots — skin-tight ankle or full-length boots; the shoe equivalent of skinny jeans. While these shoes have abated a tiny bit, they have been reinvented for 2018 with shorted heel and more sparkle — think sequins or glitter. Another trend that has hit the runway for summer is replacing an ordinary heel element with a block piece of coloured acrylic, or clean acrylic embedded with dried flowers and the like. An over-arching fashion trend for 2018 will be colour — think bold

turquoise, red, purple, and pastel lavender, yellow, blue. While this will mostly stick to other items of clothing, there is the opportunity to lash out in footwear with a pair of bold blue boots or slides.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU BY ANGE CLEARY

T

here is something about the turn of the calendar year that makes us crave some change especially when it comes to our appearance. Is it time for a change?

QUALITY PIECES FOR THE YEAR

The best way to start building your new wardrobe is to cull what you haven’t worn or even looked at in the past few months. Clothing shouldn’t be held on to if you are not selecting it out of your wardrobe. It either means A) It doesn’t fit right B) You don’t feel great in it or C) It is a special occasion or sentimental item.

4 KEEP A TIDY WARDROBE WORK SPACE

Make sure you are stocked with items such as t-shirts, camisoles, basic pants, jeans and dresses that flatter you. As long as they are a luxe fabric with a tailored finish, these items stand the test of time and allow you to add trends each season with your accessories.

Find inspiration in other peoples’ style, especially if you find it a little difficult to team things together. Pick someone’s style you admire and what it is you like about them and then build your own wardrobe around that look. It doesn’t have to be a celebrity or profile personality. It can be someone you know who you look at from afar.

1 CULL WHAT YOU HAVEN’T WORN IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS

2 SHOP YOUR STAPLES

ENJOY A FRESH FASHION START IN THE NEW YEAR

3 INVEST IN AT LEAST 2

Now you have taken stock of what you already have, it’s time to buy two stunning “OMG I love it!” items. This would usually be a gorgeous designer handbag a beautiful jacket or a fierce pair of shoes.

Most wardrobes are bit like a bomb hit them, with items all over the shop and everything crammed in. What happens then is you tend to wear only certain things because you can’t see them clearly or you get lazy and just grab what you know works best.

Sleep Tight Tips You Need to Know If you’re one of the third of all people getting less than six hours of sleep a night, it’s safe to say you’re looking for answers to help aid your insomnia. But if the usual tips of limiting caffeine, switching off your electronics and cementing a bedtime routine haven’t worked so far, these science-backed tricks might be for you.

It’s a known fact that the sun is a big factor in how early you rise, but the moon plays a role in the quality of your sleep overnight. A 2013 study found that lunar phases interfered with sleep — with participants taking longer to fall asleep, and sleeping on average 20 minutes less during a full moon. Try taking melatonin or going to bed slightly earlier when a full moon is in place to counteract its negative sleep effects.

Embrace the Second Sleep European nations who close for ‘siesta’ are onto something, with researchers arguing that taking a second sleep during the day is good for you. Not only will it revamp your energy levels, but napping throughout the day can also undo some of the stress associated

with our busy modern lives. The key is napping for less than 30 minutes and aiming for early afternoon so it doesn’t interfere with your evening sleep.

As hard as it is to jump out of bed after a rough night’s sleep, research suggests that sticking to a sleep schedule of around 8 hours at night is better in the long run than sleeping in. Why? It trains your body to develop healthy circadian rhythms, allowing for better sleep long-term. So, next time you’re desperate to stay under the covers, try to rise and shine instead.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS IN TOOWOOMBA LIFESHAPE CLINIC IS CELEBRATING 10 YEARS SINCE ITS FIRST CLIENT IN TOOWOOMBA.

While many things have changed since the LifeShape Clinic first opened here in January 2008, their commitment to improving the health of Toowoomba residents hasn’t. LifeShape Clinic chief executive officer and founder Neil Holt said they saw the need to extend their services because the clinic had a number of clients making the weekly commute to Brisbane for their weight loss programs. “By establishing in Toowoomba, we were able to make our high quality health services more accessible to the region,” Neil says. From their humble beginnings in Southeast Queensland, LifeShape Clinic has since expanded to Sydney and Melbourne, helping more than 10,000 Australians lose more than 100,000 kilograms across the eastern seaboard. “Everyone wants good health, so I feel

very proud to have grown our business to Sydney and Melbourne,” Neil says. “However we are more committed than ever to reducing the health risks associated with obesity close to home in Toowoomba and Brisbane.” That’s just as well, given 63 per cent of Toowoomba residents are overweight, 5% above the national average. Quality research is showing that being overweight produces similar health risks as a lifetime smoker — reducing lifespan by up to 8-10 years. “Maintaining a healthy weight means maintaining good health in all areas,” Neil says. “LifeShape Clinic is dedicated to improved health for Toowoomba and surrounding residents,” Neil says. “We look forward to helping everyone seeking a healthy weight and the quality of life that follows.” If committing to a healthier lifestyle is at the top of your to-do list for 2018, book a no-obligation, initial assessment with the clinic on 1800 567 348.

Make healthy your new habit. Whatever your reason, there’s no better time to start living a healthy lifestyle. Our team will arm you with the tools to make the positive changes you need to achieve and maintain a healthy weight - for life. A healthier, happier you starts with just one call to 1800 567 348.

FINDING THE RIGHT GYM FOR YOU BY SUNI GOLIGHTLY

F

inding the right gym can be make-or-break in your health and fitness goals.

LOCATION

Find a gym close to work or home. If it’s not, you won’t go. Even better if you can leave some gym gear and a towel there in your own locker.

FITNESS ASSESSMENT

Make sure there are no hidden costs, and look for inclusions such as initiation sessions, trial periods and cooling off periods.

Many gyms offer a fitness assessment to test body fat, cardiovascular strength, upper and lower body strength, flexibility and core strength. These assessments give your gym an understanding of your fitness levels, strengths and weaknesses, and allow them to recommend classes and goals.

Visit a couple of times to check out the kind of company you will be keeping. If you are uncomfortable working out in a male dominated environment, go for a female-only gym. Ask about the social opportunities and events.

You want a good selection of easy to use equipment addressing cardio, strength and flexibility. Cardio equipment should offer information such as kilojoules burned, heart rate and distance covered.

COST

MEMBERSHIP

EQUIPMENT

WEIGHTS

Most experts say weight training is essential to any fitness regime. A good gym will offer a variety of both machines and handweights, so you have a choice how you work out.

GROUP CLASSES

Ideally you want a gym that offers a good variety of classes, from stretch to spin. Barre body classes, that combine ballet, Pilates and yoga, are very hot at the moment, as are spin classes that include lights or amazing music. But other faves such as yoga, stretch, strength-based classes, cardio tone and Zumba, are great additions.

HOLISTIC BEAUTY APPROACH

H

EALTH and wellbeing is important to everyone, but what is considered the ultimate happiness to one person is not necessarily right for someone else. Every aspect of life affects our wellbeing and health, from environmental factors to biological predisposition and other lifestyle factors. General acceptance of what is

considered to be normal has changed over the years due to information and technology advances and better social standards as well as easy access to health and wellbeing services. While the medical sector is the major influence in good health, and regular health checks from your doctor are important, many factors that promote and sustain long-term health and wellbeing lie outside the doctors office.

Managing stress is the major obstacle we all tackle. Maintaining work/life balance, mental health, physical fitness, a good social standing and spirituality are all factors that contribute to a happy and fulfilled life. Balance is helpful in working towards success. Learn to nurture yourself and your relationships. Give yourself permission to relax and rejuvenate. Book in time out with your partner or a loved one to have a massage or mani/pedi. Spend time developing yourself by learning a new skill or joining a hobby group. There are so many alternative therapies available to help prevent or alleviate the symptoms of illness. These include Reiki, crystal healing, reflexology, Bowen therapy and acupuncture to name just a few. A restful sleep, well-balanced diet and regular exercise will all enhance your journey. The options for professional services is endless, from dietician through to beauty therapist.

Home to over 50 wineries, Stanthorpe represents over 60% of Queensland wine production.

BY NIVARD NELSON, FOOD COLUMNIST

H

ow many times have we heard “Queensland does not produce good wine”? Well, let me dispel that statement. At the recent Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology awards, Mike Hayes of Symphony Hill Wines was named Wine Maker of the Year. This recognition of Mike Hayes can only be good for the region as a whole. Home to over 50 wineries, Stanthorpe represents over 60% of Queensland wine

production. Growing varieties that vary from the ubiquitous shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay, through to the lesser known, more unusual varieties including viognier, mourvedre and tempranillo. The best way to experience these unusual varieties is to undertake the Strange Birds Wine Trail, found on the Granite Belt Wine Country website. Either by doing a self-drive tour or

organising a tour through one of the many tour operators, this is a fantastic way to visit some amazing cellar doors and try some new wines. Recently named in the top 100 restaurants in Queensland, Macgregor Terrace Food Project in Stanthorpe is a jewel in the town’s crown. Ben Lanyon and his wife Lou are passionate about the region and work closely with small local producers to highlight the fantastic produce from the region. With an ever-changing menu that showcases seasonality at its best, this family-run restaurant is worthy of its recognition. If looking to holiday in a diverse wine and food region for your next holiday, why not look a little closer to home and support our local producers and discover just how great our region is.

MAKE-UP EXPIRY DATES BY BEAUTY SPECIALIST TENNIELLE COPSON

I

t’s hard to say goodbye to your favourite lipstick, but it’s important to abide by make-up expiration dates. Why is that, you ask. Cosmetics can trap bacteria over time and therefore need to be replaced regularly to avoid introducing harmful or irritating bacteria to the skin or eyes. Most products will have an expiry date or a best-before date printed on the package but the following guidelines should be followed from the first day you use them.

LIQUID/CREAM FOUNDATIONS AND CONCEALERS

Two years To keep your foundation or concealers hygienic avoid using your fingers. Instead, use a clean spatula or squeeze a small amount onto the back of your hand or palette before applying. If the formula separates, the colour changes, or has a bad odour, it’s time to throw it out.

FOUNDATION/ TRANSLUCENT POWDERS

Two years Keep make-up brushes clean to keep

36 | January 2018

your pressed powder products bacteria-free. Signs that the product should not be used include a smell or if the colour looks “off ”.

MASCARA

Four to six months Do not use a pump action. This introduces air into the product, causing it to dry out. Instead, twist your mascara wand for maximum product coating. If you notice your mascara getting clumpy or starting to smell, throw it out immediately.

LIPSTICK

GEL LINER

Two months Gel liner traps bacteria more easily and should only be used for a few months.

EYESHADOW POWDERS

One year Store lipstick in a cool, dry place. Throw out if you notice the texture change, if it feels dry or smells waxy.

Two years While powder shadows can last as long as face powders (about two years), they should be replaced more often since they’re used around your eyes.

LIP AND EYE PENCILS

12 to 18 months

EYESHADOW CREAMS

One year Sharpen pencils between uses to keep hygienic.

POWDER BLUSH Two years

CREAM BLUSH

12 to 18 months

EYE CREAM

Six months Always use clean hands when applying them, to help keep the tubes and pots germ-free.

SUNSCREEN Two years

FACE CREAM

One to two years, depending on ingredients. Natural and plant based ingredients spoil more quickly. Check labels carefully.

FRAGRANCE

Eight to 10 years To maximise shelf life, keep perfume out of direct sunlight

NAIL POLISH

One to two years Avoid heat and direct sunlight as this will cause discolouration and the formula to separate.

NEW YEAR, NEW ERA FOR ST VINCENT’S

T

he new year heralds the beginning of an exciting new era for St Vincent’s Private Hospital with the first surgical procedure to be performed in the Clive Berghofer Operating Theatre Suites in mid-January. The $30 million theatre complex — which added six new state-of-the-art operating theatres including a cuttingedge hybrid theatre, a new kitchen and a new main reception area for the hospital — has been completed two months ahead of schedule and the end result has exceeded all expectations. Hospital chief executive officer Kathryn McKeefry said the theatre complex build had been a great success from the first day of construction, and delivered much more than new facilities for the hospital. “Hutchinson Builders managed the build so well they were able to hand back the space to us before Christmas, which enabled us to undertake the monumental task of commissioning the

theatres and orientating our staff and the surgeons in December in preparation for the first case in January,” Kathryn says. Kathryn says the individual theatres function well but are also really beautiful spaces. “Theatres are not usually aesthetically pleasing places — but our new ones are spacious and contemporary and equipped with the latest equipment, which will not only enhance the experience for our staff and surgeons but also for our patients. “From a clinical perspective, the inclusion of a hybrid theatre has enabled us to introduce a new cardiac diagnostic service in partnership with Heart Care Partners. “This new service will be delivered with the support of local cardiologists Dr Bob Ayres and Hearts 1st and will develop into full interventional services later in the year.” But the benefits of the build do not end with the introduction of new clinical

services and an aesthetically pleasing environment. The new kitchen, completed as part of the theatre build, has enabled the hospital to introduce room service for all patient meals — an innovation that has proved very popular. With the theatre build now complete, Kathryn says the main hospital entrance will revert to Entrance One and carparking arrangements at the front of the hospital will return to normal as well. “2017 was a big year for St Vincent’s, and we thank our patients and the community for bearing with us during the disruption of the theatre build,” she says. “I’d like to say that work on-site is now over — but there will be ongoing refurbishments in 2018, which will unfortunately involve some degree of noise — so stay tuned as there is more development to come at St Vincent’s.” The Clive Berghofer Theatre Suites will be officially opened on Thursday, February 22.

NEW DISPLAY HOMES AT PALM LAKE

T

oowoomba Pinnacle is Palm Lake Group’s grandest community yet — a five-star extension to the successful existing resort that gives those newest residents a new benchmark for luxury designer living. Unveiled at a circus extravaganza last month, alongside the resort’s $10 million Country Club were five new display homes. Palm Lake Resort general manager of sales Sue Baldwin says the architecturally designed homes emulate the high quality for which Palm Lake Resort has become known. “The homes are honestly breathtaking,” Sue says. “They are all underpinned by the same quality that recently won Palm Lake Resort a swag of Master Builders Association Awards for best home, best country club and best community for our Ballina resort.” Toowoomba Pinnacle’s latest

architectural and energy-efficient home designs offer exquisite open-plan living with raked ceilings to maximise natural light, space and comfort. High quality Caesarstone benchtops and Smeg appliances add to the grandeur. To showcase the kind of architecturally elegant lifestyle that Palm Lake Resort residents can expect here in one of Queensland’s largest regional cities, five stunning contemporary display homes were recently opened for inspection. They will pique homeowners’ interest and stir the imagination with all the luxury finishes and designer styling ideas on show. See for yourself what Toowoomba

Regional Council Mayor Paul Antonio described as “very impressive” and “perhaps one of Queensland’s most spectacular” country clubs. It’s time for you. The Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba Pinnacle on-site sales office is open seven days a week. You can organise a personalised tour of Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba Pinnacle by calling 1800 280 129. While sales consultants encourage appointments, they also welcome visitors to simply pop in and say hello — it’s that kind of neighbourhood.

ombining the ability of a sports car with an SUV, the Audi SQ5 has been one of our favourite cars to ever grace the garage. The new turbocharged six-pot petrol engine launched this year is marginally slower than the previous variant — but we’re only talking a couple of tenths. Among the big gains are more feel through the steering wheel along with the trusted punch under throttle. Sprinting from 0-100km/h in less than six seconds it’s still enough to derive a smile on the driver’s face with each prod

of the right pedal. There’s also a lovely burble at start-up and in dynamic mode which points to its dexterity. This new model is good, outstandingly impressive, in fact. Although we would also love to see the biturbo diesel variant come here with its copious torque on tap and outstanding economy figures. Audi Australia’s product planner Peter Strudwicke said they would certainly take an oil-burner version if it became available, but at this stage petrol was the only option.

Nevertheless the SQ5 maintains its outstanding ability and weighs in 130kg lighter than its predecessor. It grips, accelerates and corners like a passenger car. Combine that with lavish finishes like nappa leather trim with diamond patterns on the seats, glass with acoustic glazing for less cabin noise, matt brush aluminium cabin inlays, 21-inch alloys, flat-bottom steering wheel, adaptive dampers and bigger brakes along with sports suspension — it’s much more than superficial skirts and flash rubber.

Renewable Energy and Energy Storage

R

enewable energy and energy storage are added bonuses that can set the final touches to make your home Greensmart well into the future. If you have been following our articles in Style Magazine over the last 10 months you will have realized the basics of the home build need to be done correctly in the first place (the bones of the house) because no amount of photovoltaic modules and storage batteries will make up for inefficient and poor design in the first place. If you have selected a correctly-orientated allotment, positioned your home appropriately and followed the comprehensive design process we have suggested in these pages, your home will have a wide exposure to the north and this northern facing roof will be ideal for the placement of photovoltaic modules to generate the maximum renewable energy for storage and your daily use. The home that we have hypothetically constructed following the lessons we have learnt over the last 10 months could easily be the most energy efficient home in your suburb. The power you now need to run your home will be significantly reduced — up to 60% less than the standard mass-produced project homes that will have been build around you. Photovoltaic modules and energy storage are evolving at a great rate, therefore it is important you investigate the most up-to-date alternatives best suited to your circumstances and speak to an expert — as we have suggested from day one with all aspects of the home build. Here’s a couple of things to determine before you proceed. Check that extra photovoltaic modules can be connected in later without the replacement of the entire system. Also, if you are looking at energy storage, check that extra units can also be simply and easily added. Bear in mind,

your future energy requirements may increase with the growing acceptance and evolution of improved electric cars — as just one example of future demands on your home’s ability to save and generate power. Another possible source of renewable energy is the wind. Wind generators or turbines use the wind to turn a rotor that drives a generator. These are more suited to non-urban areas as the turbine needs to be mounted on a tower and emits some noise in operation. A typical tower required for a wind turbine needs to be 15 to 20 metres high so again this may be difficult to achieve in an urban environment. The advantage you will have with a truly energy efficient design is that it will always be energy efficient. It will never change or deteriorate with time.

style | interior PREPARE YOUR HOUSE FOR SUMMER

BRINGING SUMMER HOME

T

he days and nights are now spectacularly warm, and you can adjust your home decor to suit. Try adding pops of colour to refresh a room by adding bright graphics, flowers or homewares. Now is an excellent opportunity to mix textures and perhaps add more natural fibres to your home, such as a straw mat to give your home a more bohemian, relaxed look. Take down heavy drapes and replace them with light, flowy curtains. This is a romantic look while still

maintaining the privacy you need. White is a wonderful colour for summer — its clean, pure look fits in with the warm weather. Think about adding white homewares, white furniture or perhaps painting some white feature walls. One of the most exciting additions to summer home living is the excuse of adding a hammock or daybed. It can often be far too cold to have an outdoor daybed on the Darling Downs in winter, so summer is the perfect time to soak up some sun outside.

Position a hammock in a cosy nook and pile with pillows for the ultimate relaxation station. Scatter succulents and plants throughout your home — many people like having hanging plants, or plants weaved through lattices outdoors. Beach-style and nautical additions such as rope, shells and collapsible chairs add a great summer feel to any home. Whatever you decide to do, the most important part of implementing summer into your home decor is to brighten and freshen the area.

HEART OF JAPAN BY LETITIA ROBARTS

I

n November, I took my third trip overseas to the same beautiful country, which I seem to love more every time I travel there — Japan. It is a short eight-hour plane ride and is only one hour behind Australian time, so you need not worry about long uncomfortable plane rides or horrendous jet lag. My husband and I travelled with my mum, Daphne and my dad, Gordon. This was Dad’s first overseas trip at 74 years young, and I am happy to report now we’re back on home soil that they both loved it. The season was autumn and the beautiful red leaves and crisp cool air made Japan even more beautiful to experience this time around.

Park

We landed in Tokyo and spent one short week exploring Harajuku’s Owl Cafe and Meji Shrine, magical Tokyo Disneyland and electronic Akihabara to name a few. We then used our Japanese rail pass to hop on a Shinkansen or bullet train, to venture to Osaka where we would spend another wonderful week. Here we went to Universal Studios Japan and spent most of our time in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, lunching at the Three Broomsticks where I fan-girled hard. We also explored Osaka Castle and met up with my wonderful friend of 10 years, Kanako and attended her amazing wedding party. We met Kana’s awesome friends and

cooked takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki at her new house together. We then went to Japan’s southern island, Kyushu, and met up with more wonderful friends, Yuko and Teruko. We travelled to Fukuoka and explored Dazaifu temple. We visited Moji Port, where you can stand on Japan’s South Island and look over to see the middle island of Honshu. We saw many other wonderful places in our three weeks, which went by in a flash. I find myself already longing to go back to the wonderful Japanese culture and the delicious food, not to mention all the wonderful people we know and love, and all the new wonderful people to meet.

road home BY JASMINE THEODOSIS

Dating for 18 months, Kosta asked my father Gary for my hand in marriage. After a 12-month engagement, it was time for the big day. For me, hair and make-up began at 7am at Central Apartments in Toowoomba, surrounded by my five beautiful bridesmaids, my flower-girl, and my mother. Our vision for the perfect wedding

was simple, timeless and elegant. The ideal venue that encompassed all of these things was Gip’s Restaurant in Toowoomba, set among beautiful gardens and housed in one of Toowoomba’s most historic buildings. Once all guests were seated, the strings played the perfect classic processional, Canon in D Major by Johann Pachelbel, and I walked down the aisle in a breathtaking lace designer wedding gown from Martina Liana. I felt so special as I walked down the

shoot at various locations in Toowoomba, including the GPO and the Cube Hotel, where we shared our very first karaoke date. Meanwhile back at Gip’s, guests were seated inside the restaurant for the commencement of the reception. When we returned, the party was in full swing. The restaurant was styled with stunning white flowers from Deane’s Rose Growers, and the bridal table was adorned with a large table arrangement

A man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it.” — George A. Moore. This is a quote from my groom Kosta Theodosis’ speech, which holds true to us as newlyweds. We left our hometown Toowoomba to pursue our dreams and aspirations, only to return home years later to find one another, and ultimately, the happiness we had been searching for. Growing up in the same neighbourhood, chances are our paths had already crossed, but we had individual paths to follow first. I chose a career in journalism, which led to working for WIN Television, NW Magazine in Sydney and various fashion publications in London. Meanwhile, Kosta was beating the sound of his own drum. He became the drummer and member of the platinum selling, ARIA nominated rock band Amy Meredith, as well as performing and recording with notable artists including Robbie Williams, Leo Sayer, The Kite String Tangle, Thirsty Merc and many more. After living in Los Angeles for several years, it was only when Kosta returned to Toowoomba to renew his visa that we met in January 2015.

provided by The Little Flower Stall, who also created all bouquets. The tables also featured tea-lights and a sugar-coated almonds bonbonniere for each guest as a wedding favour, to tie in with the groom’s Greek heritage. The speeches were extremely heartfelt and emotional, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. I was especially amazed by my husband’s speech. Even though Kosta had played to a crowd of thousands, he had never made a speech before. He did such an incredible job and spoke from the heart. The cake was a stunning four-tiered white chocolate semi-naked cake topped with flowers and baked by the local Theo’s Southtown Bakery. As guests watched on, we transitioned into the first dance to the classic soul tune When a Man Loves a Woman by Percy Sledge. The night continued with the throwing of the bridal bouquet and the white lace garter, and plenty of dancing, including the traditional Greek Zorba. Our wedding day was truly spectacular. It was even better than we had imagined, and we wouldn’t change one thing about the day.

IN HEARTS WAKE HITS THE SPOTTED COW

WORKING CLASS MAN BY JIMMY BARNES FROM a reader’s perspective Working-Class Man could not have come quickly enough. It’s predecessor, Working Class Boy brought readers face-to-face with a young Jimmy Barnes before he joined one of the most successful rock bands Australia produced. However the road was not easy. Now we move to Cold Chisel days, which were brutal on his body but he sweated and drove his band harder than anyone else could. He ventured out on a solo career when Chisel folded, having great success never being out of the top five with every single or album he released. However, it is his family that ground him. He met his wife Jane and from that moment he was and still is to this day firmly in love. It is only through her guidance and love that he manages to still roar like the true rock legend that he is.

I

n Hearts Wake will tour across our Great Southern Land early next year. Spanning 28 dates across three months and taking in the entire continent, In Hearts Wake will hit every corner of Australia when they set off on their epic journey in January. Joining In Hearts Wake around the nation will be Young Lions. In June, the boys from Byron dropped their colossal third album Ark, which debuted at No. 3 on the Aria Album Chart. The album tackled the issue of water pollution head on with the We Are Waterborne: An In Hearts Wake Initiative with Tangaroa Blue and Sea Shepherd. Young Lions will jump in the van to support In Hearts Wake on this huge run. This Brisbane crew just released their new album, Mr Spaceman (their first new music since 2015), which debuted at No. 3 on the AIR charts and has impressed the likes of Rolling Stone Magazine, who dubbed it “a concept record that explodes their sound into heady, arena-ready territory”. Since forming in 2013, the band has earned a very loyal legion of fans across the country, not only from their own headlining shows across the country but also as supporting acts.

WONDER Being dubbed the “heartwarming film of the year”, Wonder tells the tale of young August “Auggie” Pullman, who was born with Treacher Collins syndrome – a rare genetic facial deformity. The film follows Auggie’s journey trying to fit in at school and make friends. A truly heartwarming and encouraging story. Wonder is well worth the watch.

JEFF GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

MORTGAGE CHOICE

C

live Berghofer was once quoted as saying the key to success was to work hard and be honest. Jeff Hannaford, owner of the chartered accountant business under the same name, finds these words ring very true in his professional practice. “I have over 40 years as a chartered accountant,” Mr Hannaford said. “Over the years I’ve gained experience in most fields and hence am able to help people in most fields.” Mr Hannaford enjoys being able to give back to the community through his business. “I was lucky enough to get a university education, and you should put that back into the community,” he said. “I started my business to help people and be part of the community. “I like that the community can judge you and say you have certain standards so you have to grow.” Mr Hannaford plans to continue to give good service as government departments become less personal and harder to get in contact with in coming years.

‘‘

So I urge people to go out and make money, and let me worry about the tax side of things. JEFF HANNAFORD

“Part of the job as well is to get as much of the tax paid to Canberra back into the area so our community benefits,” Mr Hannaford said. “There have been changes since I started, in that you can now make more money before paying tax than in previous years,” he said. RATE RISES INEVITABLE

For more than a year, we have seen the Reserve Bank of Australia leave the official cash rate on hold at 1.5 per cent,” Mortgage Choice chief executive officer John Flavell said. “And while it made sense for the board to leave the cash rate untouched until now given the level of economic uncertainty, things are starting to improve across the globe. “Indeed, over the last few months, we have seen significant improvements in both the domestic and global markets. “Domestically, business conditions have shown signs of improvement, the unemployment rate has fallen to a low of 5.4 per cent, and property price growth has started to stagnate across some markets in line with expectations. “With that in mind, it is only fair to assume that the next rate movement by the Reserve Bank of Australia could be up. “When exactly rates will rise is very much undetermined. “When asked what they thought would happen to interest rates throughout 2018, 52.5 per cent of Australians said interest rates would rise, albeit quite slowly. Meanwhile, a further 27.8 per cent said they expected the RBA to leave the cash rate on hold for another 12 months at least. “Of course, as and when rates do rise, it is important for borrowers to remember that mortgage rates are still low by long-term standards. “Furthermore, Australia’s lenders remain hungry for business, which is good news for anyone still yet to achieve their home-ownership goals.”

YOUR FINANCIAL NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS BY DIRECTOR AND SENIOR FINANCIAL PLANNER OF CREATE FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS, LEANNE MCDONALD

W

ith the New Year upon us, millions of people around the world make their resolutions, and hope and plan to stick with them throughout the year. Here are some ways to make sure that you at least keep your financial ones. 1. Set SMART goals. When we set a vague goal like “save more money” or a seemingly insurmountable one like “pay off all debt,” we’ve already set ourselves down

the path to failure. Instead, you want your goal to be SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-sensitive. 2. Determine how you’ll invest for each goal. For goals to be funded within the next two years, you’ll want to keep your money somewhere safe like a bank account or stable investment fund that doesn’t fluctuate in value. For longer term goals, it probably

makes sense to take some investment risk. 3. Calculate how much you need to save per month. For debt, you can use debt calculator to see how quickly you can be debt free. 4. Look for tax-advantaged ways to save. Some examples are your superannuation savings with pre-tax money for retirement, education funds, and borrowing to invest. 5. Minimise your costs. Look to improve your spending habits to achieve your goals. 6. Automate your payments. By automating your savings, you make sure that they take priority versus saving whatever you have left at the end of the month. 7. Adjust as needed. Once or twice throughout the year, you’ll want to revisit your goals, re-run your calculations based on your actual investment returns, your loan balance, see if tax laws or interest rates have changed. No matter what your financial resolutions are, there are ways to become motivated again and get back on track. A good financial adviser and financial plan can help you achieve that.

THE RULING ON SCHOOLING Navigating joint decision-making after separation BY BEST WILSON BUCKLEY FAMILY LAW

Some of the other factors the court will consider in making a decision about where a child shall attend school include, but are not limited to: ■ Logistical challenges — what is the travel time to school? Are the proposed schools serviced well by public transport? ■ Financial challenges — what are the relevant costs of education and how are they proposed to be paid? ■ Any views or wishes expressed by the children (if appropriate); ■ Any prior agreement in relation to the selection of schooling; ■ The likely effect of any change to existing arrangements, for example, any anxiety the child may experience as a result of changing peer groups; ■ Any relevant cultural, religious or other traditions of the parents. It would be appropriate for a schooling-related application to the court to include evidence with respect to

location, convenience, fees, the school’s academic performance and curriculum, sporting and arts facilities, and any previous discussions and/or agreements between you and your former partner about this issue. It is most important that you are able to demonstrate that your child has a place at your proposed school. There is no use successfully obtaining an order for your child to attend a school, only for their enrolment to not be accepted. The court cannot compel a school to accept an enrolment. As much as this can be a difficult decision for parents, it can also be a difficult and somewhat unpleasant decision for the court. We know of more than one judge who is prepared to settle these disputes by selecting whichever state school is located midway between the parents’ residences — an outcome with which neither parent may be happy.

Midwifery Continuity of Care... for pregnancy, birth and post birth period

6735743aa

W

e regularly see disputes arise where parents have agreed to enrol their children in a particular school while together, with one or both parents changing their mind after separation. This can be for a number of reasons such as changes in financial circumstances or distance from school(s) after relocation. So how do we settle the impasse? If you and your former partner cannot agree upon which school your child or children should attend, an application may be made to the court to make this decision for you. The court will consider the competing proposals of the parties having regard to the children’s best interests. Preference will not merely be given to the proposal of the resident parent, however the court will of course be presented with the reality of current care and living arrangements which will need to be considered.

AUSTRALIA – BEAUTIFUL ONE DAY AND PERFECT THE NEXT LAUREN HOPE, COLUMNIST

January 26 is a very important date for Australia.

I

t is a day for reflection as we acknowledge our history, celebrate our beautiful country and recognise what it means to be an Aussie. So, what is it that we love about our country? Why is Australia Day one of the most celebrated public holidays of the year? Well, our natural landscape doesn’t leave much to be desired with some of the world’s best beaches, expansive parklands, rainforests, dessert ranges, Uluru and don’t forget we also lay claim to Crocodile Dundee and Vegemite! However, celebrating Australia means much more than feeling grateful about our scenery. We are fortunate to live in a democratic country with a sense of fair

go and never-say-die attitude, freedoms of choice and of course, our people. We celebrate Australia Day in many forms (the beauty of our freedom of choice) with recent statistics indicating that three in four Australians value its true meaning. There are numerous public events, community events, flag raising ceremonies, backyard cricket games and of course the iconic blow-up pool, barbecue and festive drink. And we can’t forget about those terrible lamb ads which take over our TV’s. But, it doesn’t really matter how you celebrate the occasion as each of us have our own traditions and cultures. So, whether you “are throwing a snag

on the barbie”, watching the local yabby races or simply just having a well-earned rest, please remember how lucky we are to be Australian. It truly is beautiful one day and perfect the next.

BACON AND EGG OR CHORIZO AND EGG BREKKIE PIZZA

SCENE

Pizza is always a family favourite for a relaxed summer evening, or any time of the year. Toowoomba is lucky to have the only Pizza Hut dine-in restaurant on the Darling Downs in Ruthven St and offers an ideal family-friendly option that is delicious and won’t blow the budget either.

News of all-day breakfasts have gone viral in Australia more than once, and Pizza Hut now has two brekkie pizzas to enjoy day or night. Perfectly cooked, flavoursome bacon, softly cooked scrambled egg, stretchy gooey mozzarella cheese, parsley, and lashings of barbecue sauce made this permanent menu pizza popular with Style Magazine’s foodies.

BUFFET

This pizza is relatively recent to the Pizza Hut menu, and it certainly packs a punch. Tender chicken pieces, salty feta, diced tomato, green capsicum, onion, and oregano make this pizza extremely moreish. Between the soft chicken, slightly firm feta, and crunchy capsicum, there are a variety of textures to wrap your mouth around as well.

CHICKEN AND FETA PREMIUM PIZZA

While there are enough seats for 150 people and plenty of food to go around, Pizza Hut Toowoomba South does recommend booking your place in advance for Friday and Saturday evenings. As well as a great range of pizzas to sample, there is also pasta and sauces, garlic bread, salads, fruit, and desserts. The self-serve, soft-serve ice cream machine is always a favourite, regardless of age.
