The festive season has arrived and the Style team is ringing it in joyously. What a wonderful time of year — a time to celebrate the people you love and what you’re truly grateful for. We have been really fortunate in this edition to meet some people who are incredibly grateful to be a part of the beautiful Toowoomba landscape. We meet the Namazi family (p8 and 9), who are Afghan refugees from Iran. Their heartwarming story is a wonderful addition to our end-of-year publication, alongside the tale and creative works of artist Jean Dwyer (p10 and 11), who creates stunning artworks from alcohol and paint. Christmas is about togetherness, and we are really lucky on the Darling Downs that our community so firmly believes this. Among our pages are some wonderful events that you can get involved in over the festive season. Toowoomba’s Neighbourhood Christmas (p17) will be hosted on Christmas Day for those who might be having a hard time, particularly disadvantaged families, those suffering homelessness and anybody feeling lonely on the day without family. Check out the Crave Christmas Spectacular (p18) in Highfields on December 16 for a great community event for all ages. As usual, Style delivers its usual great reads, including a local couple who took their wedding to New York City — check out their spectacular pictures on p52. We immerse ourselves in some Chinese culture (p56), and our lovely Lunar gives us a helping hand with what to get our loved ones according to their star sign (p66). Stay safe and be well during the holidays, Stylers! The Style team

AN AFGHAN FAMILY OF EIGHT, THE NAMAZI’S CAME TO TOOWOOMBA AS REFUGEES IN 2013 FROM IRAN AND HAVE EMBRACED EVERY MINUTE OF THEIR TIME HERE SINCE

Australian children were born in heaven… now, we have come to heaven,” Samira grins, smoothing out her beautiful pink dress that her older sister Ziba made. A family of eight — five daughters, two boys, and their mother, the Namazi family came to Australia in 2013 as Afghan refugees from Iran knowing one word — hello. After just six months of being in Toowoomba, the children could all speak English. Sisters Sakineh and Samira have just finished studying their first year of biomedical science degrees at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ). Their younger brothers, Esmaeel and Amir are attending high school. Two of the five daughters, Ziba and Fatemeh, are studying English at TAFE, and another sister, Sharifeh, is studying a business and commerce degree at USQ as well. “It was eight years ago that we lost our father, we were just small girls and boys, so we are so happy that we are in Australia,” says Sakineh, her blue dress also a creation of her older sister, Ziba. “If we were in Iran, we couldn’t study biomedical science or business, because most of the Afghan people are not allowed to study those courses.” “We are very grateful for being in Australia,” Samira chimes in, smiling. In Iran, the Namazi family lived in downtown Tehran — the country’s

capital city. They were very poor, and all of them lived in one bedroom. For the family to leave Iran, they were required to write a letter about their life and circumstances to the United Nations. After several interviews at their home from government officials and having their physical and mental health checked over six months, the Namazi family was accepted as refugees, and could finally come to Australia. “We are so thankful to the Australian Government and Australian people because they accepted us,” Samira says. “In the future, we want to finish our studies and become someone important and help people. “We want to pay back Australia because they have given us so many things… we want to thank them.” For the Namazi family, it’s the small things (as well as the big things) that they appreciate. “We love the birds,” Samira smiles, nodding at me. “They will catch the birds in the street

in Iran but here, all the birds are free — it’s so amazing. “Also, Australia is so green — the yards are green, the trees — everywhere, there is more green than Tehran.” For the Namazi family, coming to Australia has allowed them to do so many things for the very first time, such as using a phone, the internet, a laptop — even seeing the ocean. “The first time I saw the Pacific Ocean, I was screaming for an hour, I was so happy - I cried happy tears,” Sakineh laughs. “When we were in Iran, this kind of life was just a dream for us… but now, in Australia, it’s real life.” Sakineh has big plans after she completes her biomedical science degree. “I would love to join the army or the airforce, and become a doctor there,” she grins, her eyes wide. “I would love to help all the people around the world — it’s my dream.” Sakineh and Samira have volunteered at Darling Heights State School and are looking for jobs. When Fatemeh has completed her English studies at TAFE, she would like to study nursing. Similarly, Ziba would like to go on to study both nursing and beauty. The Namazi family has been supported in its move to Toowoomba through Positive Empathy and Community Engagement — or, in other words, PEACE. Director of PEACE Genevieve Allpass emphasises that the

organisation is about changing the dialogue from hate speech to understanding. “PEACE is not religiously or politically aligned, and has no agenda other than peace and understanding,” Genevieve explains. “PEACE formulates ideas to assist refugees, people seeking asylum, homeless, and at-risk locals.” Genevieve says that most of what is provided by PEACE is friendship, security and help to those who need it. “People arriving here without family or social fabrics, people who already live here but who have lost their family and social fabric need, want, ask for someone to be their ‘tribe’, their ‘group’, their ‘friend’ and PEACE provides that (and more) with positivity, empathy and engaging with the established

community sectors,” she adds. PEACE also provides items for community charities, and offers assistance and home visits helping with anything from school work to cooking. They also assist the homeless and less fortunate, providing ongoing services to local charities and service providers. The unfunded and volunteer-based organisation is primarily working with women and children at-risk, and relies purely on donations. “Anyone can be involved in PEACE just by coming along to our various groups and events and logging on to our website or Facebook — volunteering is the most important way to help others,” Genevieve says. “One thing that I want to make crystal clear is that we can help new comers to our country AND help our

homeless and less fortunate in our community. “You don’t need to choose. “There are community sectors who, together, help everyone. “No one human being is less, or more, worthy of help than anyone else — we are all intrinsically the same. “For example, as parents, we all worry about our children, how they are going with school, their friendship groups, are they safe, regardless of where we come from or what we look like. “Think of what we need, as humans, safety, food, water, love, security — we all need that. Change the negative or hate speech to understanding — it’s as easy as instead of saying a disabled person, change it to a person with a disability — see how that changes things?”

A CHANCE DISCOVERY IN THE UNITED STATES LED ARTIST JEAN DWYER TO EXPLORE THE COLOURFUL WORLD OF ALCOHOL INK ART EVER SINCE

A

nyone who enjoys a tipple will soon be able to tell you their favourite drop, but for local artist Jean Dwyer, alcohol has another use that so many of us would never have considered – as art medium. Originally from the UK, Dwyer was “whisked off by her Aussie bloke” to live in Dirranbandi (western Queensland) before moving to Toowoomba four years later – a city she’s delighted to call home. “I count my blessings every day to live in such a beautiful place,” Dwyer said. “I had a successful career here and our two children attended school here and we now have six grandchildren. There are blessings galore.” Dwyer’s art journey started when she moved to Toowoomba and she had the opportunity to take painting and drawing classes. “I tried pastels, charcoals, acrylics,” she recalled. “My art had to fit in around career and family, but it always found a way as I was incomplete without it. “I have always undertaken courses and classes when something sparks my interest.” With a love of all things creative, Dwyer’s artistic world was turned upside down when she stumbled across alcohol ink art while travelling in the United States three years ago. The technique involves pure colour being suspended in alcohol. Then the alcohol evaporates as you paint with it

10 | December 2017

‘‘

After lots of practice and happy mistakes, I have now developed my own style leaving behind an intense colour. “I was truly in awe and just wanted to get my hands on them,” Dwyer said. “I call them the party girl of the art world because they are so much fun. They are bright, amazing and unpredictable. “After years of painting with other media, here was something really different and very challenging. “I wanted to change my art style and this was just what I needed.” Dwyer recalled the excitement of finally being able to try the techniques at home. “When I finally got to buy some in Australia, they were almost unheard of then (and still almost now),” she said. “Their rich colours and fluidity were amazing and the prospect of what I could achieve with them inspired me to learn all I could. “I rarely use a brush, but I do push, flow and blow the ink where I need it to go. “They dry very quickly, so I use

different techniques to achieve different results.” Dwyer said that while learning her new style, she encountered plenty of “disasters along the way”, but these beautiful whoops (as she describes them) could still have the ability to turn into something truly amazing. “The thing is with inks you can never get exactly the same thing twice, so each painting is absolutely unique,” she said. “I love that. After lots of practice and happy mistakes, I have now developed my own style.” Dwyer said the inks lent themselves very easily to landscapes and blooms, but she often paints more intricate works in

detail such as butterflies, zebras, fairy wrens, and the like. “I much prefer the free-flowing works of landscapes and blooms, as the inks show their true beauty,” she said. “I show them in a local art gallery and I often hear comments like ‘wow, that’s amazing’ and ‘how do you do that with ink’? “I do not think photographs do them justice as they have the most beautiful sheen and do look vibrant and lively.” With such a love for her new medium, Dwyer’s mission is “to spread the word, because they are just too wondrous not to share”. She conducts programs for beginners

www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

as well as more advanced classes and bookings can be made via her website Jeandwyerart.com.au. “I offer a one-day beginners’ class and a one-day landscape and flowers class,” she said. “As well as that, I’m doing a weekend workshop at Murrays Art and Framing in Ruthven Street in March, 2018.” Dwyer showcases her work in a variety of outlets including The Met Gallery (Village Green), Highfields (behind the Chocolate Cottage) and she also has a display for sale at The Rustic Treehouse (Ridge Shopping Centre, Hume Street). “I also have Emu and Poppy Crystal Epoxy Blocks for sale at both the Art

Gallery Shop, Ruthven St and Toowoomba Visitor Information Centre, James St,” she said. “Or everything is available from my website.” When she’s not creating magnificent works from her home studio, Dwyer is content to spend quality time with her family and friends – all of whom delight in seeing her do something she truly loves. “I have a beautiful friend who has been my painting buddy all of this time and we share notes and thoughts and she is my sounding board, as well as my very supportive family,” she said. “It’s a great balance to my life.”

WHEN CHRISTMAS MEANS TOGETHERNESS BY LAUREN HOPE, COLUMNIST

Psssstttt... If you promise not to tell anyone, I’ll let you in on a little secret...

C

6720631ab

hristmas is coming. What? You already knew? Well, fancy that. Maybe it’s because our senses have already been assaulted with Christmas decorations, puddings and the token Santa Claus since early September. Please don’t think I am the Christmas Grinch — I’m far from it. I can’t hold back my excitement to put up the tree, fairy lights and, of course, the iconic blow up Santa. However, I feel some retailers launch their Christmas campaigns relatively early and it diminishes the true meaning of Christmas. There is one campaign this year, however, that is focusing on the real meaning of Christmas ‘togetherness’. The ad is a gorgeous visual feast that offers something for parents and children alike. And maybe that’s why it appeals to me so such – I absolutely love the childlike wonder and simplicity. To me it really ticks all of the boxes and the key message is prominent without being in your face. As well, this year there is a partnership between the Salvation Army and Myer to help support families who need it most.

It’s simple, but everyone can get involved — for every share on social media of Myer’s post, the Salvation Army will receive $1. Already there has been 6200 shares and 112,000 views within 24 hours.

Keep an eye out for it, because I suspect it will be shared over and over and over again in the weeks to come (and for a good cause). I know I’ll be watching it with a smile every time it pops up for sure.

THE CHRONICLE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS COMPETITION A CHRISTMAS LIGHTS MAP WILL BE IN THE CHRONICLE ON DECEMBER 16

W

ith the holiday season just around the corner, people are starting to adorn their homes with beautiful Christmas lights. If you’re particularly fond of this, why not get involved in The Chronicle Christmas Lights Competition? Sponsored by Toowoomba Betta Home Living, there is a people’s choice competition where the public is encouraged to go out and vote for their favourite light display. These displays go in the draw to win a prize.

16 | December 2017

On December 16, there will be a double-page spread in The Chronicle with a map and a list of the winners. The Chronicle Toowoomba Christmas Lights 2017 Competition co-ordinator, Stacey Hixon, loves this time of year. “As the co-ordinator of the Christmas Lights Competition I am lucky to be able to go around and judge all the amazing Christmas light displays,” Stacey says. “Judging starts on December 1 and runs through to December 8, so if you

want to get involved but didn’t enter a display yourself, you can vote in the Readers’ Choice competition. “All you need to do is simply complete the Readers’ Choice Voting Coupon found in The Chronicle from December 1 to 10, complete the details of your choice for best display and get it into The Chronicle office by 4pm on Tuesday, December 12. “Your vote puts you in the draw for a chance to win a $250 gift voucher. “The Christmas lights map will appear in The Chronicle on Saturday, December 16, and in the Christmas Carols Guide, so don’t forget to grab a copy to find out who has the best decorated lights in town.” Entrants are required to have their lights on between December 1 and 24, from 6.30 to 9.30pm. Last year, Geoff and Debbie Morris of Highfields won Best Decorated Home, John Gamble won the Spirit of Christmas, and Lucinda Paynter won the Best Neighbourhood award. You can book to go on a lights tour through eventbrite.com.au. Contact competition co-ordinator Stacey Hixon for more information on 4690 9434 or stacey.hixon@the chronicle.com.au.

CHRISTMAS LUNCH FOR ALL Making sure as many as possible enjoy the seasonal spirit

T

LOCAL BUSINESSES ARE ENCOURAGED TO GET INVOLVED, BY SPONSORING A TABLE FOR $500

he ultimate Christmas lunch is being held for people who might not be able to enjoy the festive season at all. The Toowoomba Hospital Foundation, together with METRO Church Toowoomba, will host the second Toowoomba’s Neighbourhood Christmas on Christmas Day, which will include a two-course lunch, a visit from Santa and gifts for the kids. METRO Church pastor Matt Gregg says the event supports so many families in the region and celebrates what Christmas is all about — family. “Christmas is meant to be a time of fun and family and laughter and all of those things but sometimes it can be quite difficult for people to enjoy it because they are going through extreme hardship,” he says. Mr Gregg says without the lunch, some people might not be having a Christmas at all. Last year, it welcomed about 160

guests and this year can host up to 200. Toowoomba Hospital Foundation CEO Alison Kennedy says guests attending the lunch could be people from disadvantaged families, those suffering homelessness and anybody feeling lonely on the day without family. “We are super excited because there are some really special people in Toowoomba who really love this event and they come along on Christmas to celebrate the beautiful day,” she says. This year the lunch will be catered by local cafe ParisiAnn Patisserie, which has already cooked up more than 200 Christmas cakes that will only get tastier with time. Those interested or interested in volunteering should contact the foundation on 0419 789 922. Those wanting to attend the lunch as a guest can be referred to the foundation by their local community service provider.

CRAVE CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR

T

o be held at Mary MacKillop Catholic College in Highfields on Saturday, December 16 from 4pm to 9pm, the Crave Christmas Spectacular is seeking to celebrate the local community and bring together families of all ages to kick off the festive season in style. This event came to be when the committee members of Crave Food Festival and the Highfields Village Markets heard that the annual Highfields Block Party would not be running this year. Inevitably, the

committees joined forces to create the very first Crave Christmas Spectacular. The event also extends invitations to local not-for-profit organisations to participate and raise awareness and funds for their groups. Organiser of Crave Food Festival Emma Ehrlich and organiser of Highfields Village Markets Amy Manz will be helping coordinate Crave Christmas Spectacular this year. “There will be food vendors and food speciality stalls, an open air cinema, kids activities including jumping

castles, jumbo slide, giant board games, face painting, boutique market stalls for last-minute gifts, live music, bar facilities, fireworks and, of course, Santa arriving in style via helicopter!” Amy adds. “In addition, there will be a variety of displays and activities from local not-for-profit organisations.” Many of the event’s activities are free or for a small charge to cover costs. “We invite not only Highfields locals but surrounding communities to be involved,” Emma says. “We have a fabulous local community and any chance to celebrate is fantastic. “It’s a way that everyone can meet up in a family-friendly environment, share a meal and catch up before the craziness of the festive season gets into full swing.”

style | artist profile Then I transferred the design to a sheet of glass — you have to do the design as a mirror image when transferring to the glass, so that you can see the final tiled design through the glass correctly. Steve and Brenda did the manual labour — laying the mosaics took hundreds of hours. You don’t see things like complicated mosaics in Toowoomba every day, so we wanted to do something different. I love it when Toowoomba does artwork like this. It’s another little piece in the jigsaw to making it a more artistic place.

Q & A with

Grant Lehmann and Steve Andrews

GRANT LEHMANN — SCULPTOR AND ARTIST

I’ve known Steve and Brenda (owners of Central Jewellers) for quite a few years — since our motorcycling days. We decided on a floral design for the entry-way floor mosaic because Toowoomba is well-known for the Carnival of Flowers. I looked at images, and botanical drawings for reference. The

SCOOP

final design is halfway between an art and botanical piece. It wasn’t an issue to have to draw a design as planning sculptures starts with sketching. We started with small sketches, then enlarged the design. We project the design towards a large piece of paper on a wall and trace it to enlarge the design.

STEVE ANDREWS — OWNER OF CENTRAL JEWELLERS

Grant and I have been mates for years. He’s done sculpting for movies, animatronics, and more, so he drew up the artwork. It’s a big mosaic — about two metres across — and had to fit through our shop door for us to lay it in the doorway. So we made it in five pieces, but you wouldn’t know to look at it now.

ADORN YOUR EARS BY MORAG GREALY, FASHION COLUMNIST

W

hen I was a child, Christmas day was spent in either underwear, a swimsuit or, if I was really dressing up, I’d be in pyjamas. It was only when I grew up that I realised a lot of people were putting effort into their ideal ‘Christmas day outfit’ or making a point of finding the perfect shoe that can take you seamlessly to a family function and to a friend’s barbecue. If the latter sounds like your vibe, then can I suggest this season — first things first — go get yourself a fabulous earring! Yeah, yeah, I know, earrings are nothing new but there’s a certain group of ear candy that are really having a moment right now.

They’re mainly minimal metal styles, nothing too statement-y or loud. Geometric shapes, hoops and fine lines are the way to go. My favourite labels out of Australia are Ellery, Natasha Schweitzer and Holly Ryan. Or for international brands there’s Knobbly Studio, Alighieri Jewellery, Sophie Buhai and Celine. Check them out on Instagram and you’ll see what I mean. The best bit? With their likeness to shiny Christmas tree ornaments, you could throw a subtle nod to festive dressing while still adding an element of sophistication to your silly season ensemble.

It’s like the ugly Christmas jumper, but classy. Earrings aren’t your thing or have non-pierced lobes? No problem! Earrings make a great gift this time of year. And if they are for you? They’re a pretty perfect self-gift. ’Ears to a happy Christmas!

FASHION UPCYCLING M

aking things makes us feel good. Sewing and stitching aren’t usually day-to-day tasks anymore, nor is the humble skill of mending. We think we don’t have time to mend, yet often it takes a whole lot more time to shop for replacements. Wearing second-hand or upcycled clothing is sustainable and there is nothing more organic than choosing to reuse what already exists rather than buying new.

SKIRT-TO-DRESS CONVERSIONS

CHARCOAL LINEN SKIRT

Find some similar or contrasting strips of fabric (potentially from old garments, doesn’t need to be new fabric) – attach these to the front and back of the dress with decorative hand-stitching, buttons or even safety pins. Consider crossing straps over, tying bows or knotting them for interest.

BEIGE SKIRT TO SWING TOP

If you are really adventurous, you can tilt the skirt on its side to become a swing top by opening up part of the side

seam (begin midway down one side and open just enough to go over the head) to become the neckline. The old waistline becomes one sleeve, while the old hemline can be fastened (with a safety pin or hand-stitches) to create the other sleeve. Best worn over tights and T-shirt.

WHITE SKIRT TO DRESS

If you are ready for a little more sewing, you can turn a full skirt with a narrow waistband into a cool strappy shift, by cutting out D shapes below the waistband and using bias binding to finish these cut edges.

What you need to know More detailed process of upcycling these garments can be found at sewitagain.com and search specifically for Sew 36, Sew 42 and Sew 279 respectively. Make-up by Tennielle Copson at Free Fall Make-up Artistry.

You know those gorgeous long skirts that were once fashionable? We can turn them into cool summer dresses with just the slightest of tweaks. The body circumference under your arms will most likely be equal to or less than the circumference of your waist – you may already know this from wearing elastic-waist skirts as strapless dresses. Avoid the Christmas blow out The lead up to the Christmas/New Year period is often full of frantic deadlines, extra social commitments and, of course, all of those delicious once-a-year festive treats. If you’ve worked hard all year to keep your New Year’s resolution of getting in shape physically and mentally, these five tips will help ensure you make it through the festive season without the dreaded ‘Christmas blow out’.

2. Take time out Mental and emotional health is just as important as physical health at this time of year. You’re tired from 12 months of being on the go, and as your social life is likely kicking into overdrive it’s more imperative than ever to create balance so you don’t burn out. Take time out every day to do something you love, be it exercise, meditation, journaling or mandala colouring in. Whatever it is, make it an activity that reduces stress, boosts energy and sets you in good stead for the year ahead.

3. Be prepared Incidental snacking, like grabbing a packet of chips from the vending machine or eating all the party pies because you’re starving, is one of the most common festive season pitfalls. How does it come about? Lack of preparation. Put some time aside each week to pack your lunch and snacks in advance, so when that pang of hunger hits you’re prepared with healthy choices. Keep them in your handbag or at your desk so they’re readily available whenever you need them. Another tip? Up your water intake to counteract any increased alcohol and salt you might be indulging in. 4. Make ‘moving’ dates If you’re trying to squeeze in catch-ups with friends before the year wraps up, opt for healthy dates like walking or running over dinner or a drink. You’ll still get a chance to talk, but rather than being sedentary (and probably

100

having a few drinks and a greasy meal) you’ll be out in the fresh air and exercising instead. 5. Embrace probiotics New research suggests diversity in your gut health creates increased resilience, meaning looking after the natural gut flora that exists in us all has the ability to make you healthier. One of the easiest way to preserve your natural bacteria is to take pre and probiotic supplements, which work to balance the good and bad bacteria, increasing nutrient absorption, boosting immunity and even alleviating stress. Priceline Pharmacies Grand Central, Northpoint and Westridge would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our valued customers a safe and happy Christmas season. We look forward to helping you with all your health and beauty needs in 2018. 6543696aj

1. Create a food diary If you’re trying to keep on top of your health goals, it might be time to start a food diary to help keep track of what you’re eating. Clever apps like Calorific, My Diet Coach and Yazio are all options that help track food, calories and goals, ensuring festive blow-outs aren’t on the cards.

IS THERE MORE TO BAD HAIR DAYS? We all have bad hair days, right?

T

hose days when nothing you try with your tresses seems to work and a paper bag starts looking like an attractive option? But if you are suddenly having more bad days than usual, doctors suggest taking a closer look at your hair as it can offer insight on what’s going on inside your body and can help prevent bigger health problems. Falling hair: We usually lose 80 to 100 strands of hair a day but if it looks if you are losing more than usual, this can indicate a period of higher stress. Reversible hair thinning can be brought on by pregnancy, illness and depression and may not be noticeable until three months after the event. If a big stressor is behind your hair loss, don’t panic and instead concentrate on your overall wellness. Seek help for depression, get at least eight hours of sleep a night and do stress-busting activities. Poor diet: Healthy hair is shiny so if

yours is starting to look a bit dull, perhaps it is time to take a look at your diet. Eating too much processed food over a long period of time will make your hair brittle and dry. Stick with a diet heavy on whole foods with plenty of fruit and vegetables. Not enough fats: We are talking here about the right kinds of fats –monounsaturated and omega 3 fatty acids. People trying to lose weight often eliminate fats from their diet but in doing so you hamper the body’s ability to absorb fat-soluble nutrients like vitamin D, which is important for a healthy head of hair. Include foods like avocados, olive oil, oily fish and dark chocolate in your diet. Not getting enough water: If you are not getting at least 2.5 litres of water a day, chances are you don’t have enough for the body to do everything it needs to efficiently. This can easily lead to dry and dull hair.

It’s no wonder that many people find it difficult to fall asleep at night, suffer from poor sleep, or wake up feeling tired and flat. This issue is even more relevant when we travel. YOUR SNORING SOLVED IS your snoring keeping your partner — or even the rest of the household — awake during the night?

O

r worse, is it so bad that you’ve been relegated to another bedroom? Snoring affects many Australians, with the Sleep Health Foundation reporting frequent, loud snoring is experienced by 24 per cent of men and 17 per cent of women. Sometimes snoring can be a symptom of a bigger issue, such as obstructive sleep apnoea, but it is just as often due to ordinary factors that make the tongue relax and fall back into the airway during sleep. When the tongue is in the way of normal breathing, the body tries to maintain normal air volume — which

makes the throat vibrate and cause the snoring sound. However, there is a solution. Local business Snorex specialises in customising Mandibular Advancement Splints (MAS) — a mouthguard of sorts — that have proven over 80 per cent effective in eliminating snoring. The team hand-make each MAS to fit

each individual’s unique contours of teeth and jawline for maximum comfort. So what are you waiting for? Eliminate your snoring and sleep apnoea by visiting Snorex at The Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic, 146 MacKenzie St, East Toowoomba, or visit their website www.snorex.com.au ,or simply call them on 3392 1642.

AVOID THE CHRISTMAS KILOS BY ACCREDITED DIETICIAN KARA MCCOLLOM

A

t Christmas we’re all tempted to indulge a little too much. It’s a challenging time to embrace healthy foods as we often fear dampening the occasion without all the extras. However with planning and a few tweaks to your Christmas menu, you can stay in good health while enjoying the festivities.

NIBBLES

Start with platters of fruit, vegetables, unsalted nuts and rice paper rolls. Serve with home-made dips/salsa and oven-baked pita chips. Avoid deep-fried quiches, kabana, cheese and Jatz.

MAIN MEALS

Fill your plate with colourful salads dressed with extra virgin olive oil, fresh lemon juice and herbs. Avoid potato or pasta salads and creamy dressings. Prawns, oysters and fish are great low-calorie protein options, as well as lean turkey, ham and skinless chicken. A grainy bread roll or wrap can be a great accompaniment. Make sure there is plenty of mineral water infused with fresh fruit, mint and lots of ice to quench your thirst.

DESSERT

Skip the plum pudding and take advantage of seasonal summer fruits served as fruit skewers or in a fruit salad. The traditional trifle can be spruced by using lots of fresh berries and low-fat custard and diet jelly. When it comes to the beloved pavlova, fill individual shells with fresh fruit topped with Greek yoghurt instead of cream. Remember to enjoy the company of family and friends with a side of food, rather than making food your focus. Merry Christmas.

FOODIE GEMS IN OUR DELICIOUSLY RICH REGION BY NIVARD NELSON, FOOD COLUMNIST

C

ulinary tourism, or food tourism, is the exploration of food as the purpose of tourism. It is now considered a vital component of the tourism experience. Dining out is common among tourists and food is believed to rank alongside climate, accommodation, and scenery in importance to tourists. Let’s take a look at our diverse region from the Darling Downs to Stanthorpe, the Scenic Rim, Kingaroy and the Lockyer Valley. Stanthorpe is mainly known for wine, but also has amazing fruit and vegetables. Sutton’s makes an amazing apple pie

that is worth the drive. While visiting, also check out the Granite Belt Brewery. Producing great beer is one of many local success stories. The Scenic Rim is an area with hidden treasures. Just outside Aratula is a local farm growing freshwater yabbies. Their sweet flesh would rival prawns for taste and many restaurants are using these ingredients. The Lockyer Valley is growing in popularity due to the ambassadorship of chefs like Alistair McLeod. Alistair is passionate about using local producers in his cooking. Supporting local events, like our own

It’s A Bloke Thing, allows Alistair to give these producers a platform to promote their produce to a wide range of people. Kingaroy and the Bunya Mountains are known for peanuts and cheese. What people may not know is that there are also wineries and even a distillery. Kingaroy is also home to Queensland’s largest pig abattoir – Swickers Kingaroy Bacon Factory. This is just a brief introduction into this diverse and interesting region we live in. Let’s get out and enjoy what is on offer and support our local producers.

Don’t melt this summer

BY TENNIELLE COPSON, BEAUTY SPECIALIST

THESE PRO TIPS WILL KEEP YOU LOOKING COOL THIS SUMMER

W

ith the arrival of summer and the thermometer set to rise it can be a battle to keep your make-up looking fresh. But never fear — I have you covered with some tips to help keep you looking great, even when the weather is working against you.

Give your eyes definition with a long-lasting mascara that lengthens and accentuates your lashes all without the fear of smudging. No more raccoon eyes.

USE BLUSH OR LIP STAINS

This lightweight layer acts as a base to help foundation apply smoother and hold make-up in place for longer.

These stains are great for longevity in hot weather. They are applied with fingers or a separate make-up sponge. They offer sheer coverage that can be built up, making them super versatile.

LESS IS MORE

BRONZER

PRIMER

During summer avoid heavy foundation as they tend to crease and look cakey. Instead, opt for a tinted moisturisers and concealer where needed.

EXPERIMENT WITH COLOUR

Summer is a great time to explore the bolder colours of your make-up palettes. Vibrant colours can help brighten a face and create a youthful glow. Hesitant to stray from your neutral palette? Try adding a brighter blush to the apples of your cheeks.

SETTING YOUR EYESHADOW

Avoid using eye creams in warmer weather as they tend to break down in the heat. Instead, apply eye primer to the lid and set with a powder eyeshadow. The same goes for eyeliners. Begin by apply your pencil or gel liner, then using a small angled brush press dark eyeshadow over the liner to set it for longer wear.

www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

INVEST IN A WATERPROOF MASCARA

Add warmth, dimension and glow to your skin by applying bronzer to the areas of the face where the sun would natural fall: forehead, cheekbones, chin, nose. We recommend powder bronzers with varying shades as they are easier to apply and you can match your skin tone as your darkener over the summer.

STOP THE SHINE

Blotting paper is a girl’s best friend when it comes to removing unwanted shine. Simply pat your face with blotting paper. This will absorb the excess oil from your skin then follow up with a translucent setting powder.

TRANSLUCENT SETTING POWDER

Setting powder helps to minimise shine and lock in foundation and concealer leaving you with smoother looking skin. Use a fluffy powder brush to apply translucent powder over the face to set your make-up.

MEALS NOW MADE TO ORDER S

anta has delivered an early Christmas present to patients at St Vincent’s Private Hospital with the introduction of full room service for all meals as of Monday, December 11. The hospital has transformed the meal-time experience for patients, who will no longer receive their meals at a set time each day, nor need to select their meals a day in advance. Instead, they will be able to order fresh, cooked-to-order meals, which will be delivered in under 45 minutes from placing their order, at any time between 6.30am and 6.30pm. If preferred, a family member or carer will be able to place an order on behalf of the patient, and meals can also be ordered in advance for delivery at a specific time. Patients with special dietary requirements and food allergies will continue to be managed via the hospital’s clinical information systems and only food items that meet the patient’s individual requirements will be offered. Complex dietary requests will be referred to the hospital’s clinical dietitian. Room service assistants will take

ST VINCENT’S PRIVATE HOSPITAL OFFERS FULL ROOM SERVICE FROM MONDAY, DECEMBER 11 patient orders and be able to assist patients with special needs to choose from the range of options available on the menu, so good nutrition remains paramount. Room service menus will be located on the tray table in all patient rooms. St Vincent’s Private Hospital chief executive officer Kathryn McKeefry said the introduction of the new service was only possible because the hospital had recently completed a new state-of-theart kitchen as part of the $30 million Clive Berghofer operating theatre suite project. “The new kitchen was set up specifically to accommodate room service, and our food service staff have been working quietly behind the scenes to ensure a smooth implementation,” Ms McKeefry says.

Hospital support services manager Leanne Kiepe said her kitchen was the second St Vincent’s Health Australia facility to introduce this exciting model of food service, which offers a comprehensive menu that meets the dietary requirements of adults and children alike. The $30 million Clive Berghofer theatre suite project is nearing completion and plans are being implemented to commission the new theatres and recovery areas. Ms McKeefry said an extensive body of work was also in progress to implement a new cardiology service at St Vincent’s in partnership with HeartCare partners and additional refurbishment works are underway to create a new 22-bed rehabilitation unit.

too much food – meat, fruit and other perishables – in anticipation of a grand Christmas lunch or dinner. But do we really need it? There are only so many ham sandwiches you can eat into January and only so many pavs you can get through, so keep that front of mind when heading down the supermarket aisle.

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT

ON THE CARDS

KEEPING OUR PLANET GREEN MIGHT BE THE GREATEST GIFT OF ALL

C

hristmas is a time for giving, good cheer, overeating and, of course, presents. But do you ever stop to think about what our generosity is doing to the planet? Here are a few simple ways you can make Christmas a special time for your loved ones and the fragile place we call home.

WHAT A WASTE

Wrapping paper continues to be one of our greatest sources of Christmas rubbish, with upwards of 7000 tonnes being thrown away each year. This has a huge impact on our forests and landfill

(where foils cannot break down). If you’re looking for an alternative that is stylish and will make a visual impact, why not put your present in a gift box that can be used again and again? There’s no problem with re-gifting if you’re helping the environment at the same time.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Research shows that Australian households (and businesses) are throwing away almost four million tonnes of food every year. Christmas is a particularly bad time for waste as we all make the traditional mistake of buying

Twenty years ago, it would have been heresy to suggest but do we really need Christmas cards strung across a doorway to remind us of all the wonderful people in our lives? Are they necessary? In this world of technology and connectivity, it’s so much easier to contact a loved one (even on the other side of the world) and speak face to face for free. Or send your well wishes via an email or e-card. These days there are a host of options available to let family and friends know you’re thinking of them during the festive season. By making a few changes to your habits this Christmas, you will not only help protect our planet but hopefully prove an inspiration to others.

LET THERE BE (FESTIVE) LIGHT ENSURE YOUR DECORATIONS BECOME A NEIGHBOURHOOD SENSATION

SAFETY FIRST

Summer storms can bring all sorts of wild weather – from damaging hail to downpours to violent winds – so, make sure your display is properly secured with appropriate weights or zip ties. And, given all that water around, ask yourself: Are my outdoor lights waterproof? What about the electrical connections? Don’t leave it to chance. Discuss your needs with your local hardware staff member and stick to the reputable brands.

LITTLE BY LITTLE

If you’re a Christmas lights newbie, then don’t try to outdo the Joneses who have been doing this for the past 20 years. Start small and build from there. Colourful spotlights, strategically positioned at the bottom of a feature tree can look sensational. Then, complement that visual with a few strands of fairy lights wrapped around the branches and you’ll instantly turn your yard into a Christmas wonderland.

WHERE’S RUDOLF?

Santa doesn’t work alone and neither should you. Stringing lights across windows, guttering and tall tree branches can be a dangerous undertaking – as you’re combining serious heights with a task that requires your full attention and often two hands to attach hooks and ties. Be sure to have someone as a spotter, both for your ladder and to watch for any

potential problems that may arise. Remember, it’s no fun spending Christmas in the emergency ward.

LESS IS MORE

If you only have a limited supply of lights, get creative as to how you intend to use them. When looking for maximum impact, double up or even triple up the amount of lights you use on bushes by concentrating them at the front in layers. Let the back of the plant sit in darkness and let the front shine majestically for all the neighbourhood to see.

ENOUGH’S ENOUGH

Always resist the urge to put lights up in November. Early December is almost as bad, but we’ll forgive you because, hey, it’s Christmas. But once the New Year rolls around, those lights need to come down. Sure, they still look great, but having them still shining bright mid-February is a big Christmas no-no.

christmas and new year - promotion | style HAM DELIVERY MORE THAN JUST A SERVICE FOR THIS FAMILY

THE HAM RUN, A FAMILY AFFAIR t first glance, one may not see anything particularly special about this picture – a grandfather enjoying some quality time with his beloved grandson. But this story has a little twist. Mark Mingay, long-time Toowoomba resident and former Griffith, NSW, pig farmer, is preparing to do some serious driving all over Southeast Queensland this December, and a huge part of the reason lies with his little two-year-old mate, Hugh. Hugh Jensen is one of 467 people in the world who has been diagnosed with a microdeletion of the sixth chromosome. An extremely rare gene disorder which, in their search for answers, sent his desperate parents to the brink of sanity. Gratefully, thanks to the amazing work of the Children’s Medical Research Institute, the Jensens were able to finally get some answers.

These answers unlocked an entire world of possibility for Hugh, and many of the unknowns in his future became manageable and exciting instead of scary for him and his family. Luke and Michelle Jensen, the young new Toowoomba business owners of Westridge and The Ridge Meats, feel indebted to the institute and are determined to give back. “Without this research, we would have continued walking around in the dark, blaming ourselves and not being able to get help for our little boy,” Michelle says. “We would like to help to make sure that other parents do not have to endure the same hellish ordeal that Luke and I went through, and we believe that funding more research and awareness will help towards achieving this.” Westridge Meats has been twice awarded the highly acclaimed title of

Australia’s Best Ham. This Christmas, they plan to sell and deliver their award-winning hams all over Southeast Queensland. “Five dollars from every ham sold this Christmas goes to Jeans for Genes, which is the main charity initiative that funds the Children’s Medical Research Institute,” Michelle says. Michelle’s father Mark Mingay is pleased to be doing the delivering, and looks forward to hitting the road with his festive cargo. “Christmas is such a special time for families to come together,” Mark says. “So many of the best memories are made around the dinner table, and I’m pleased to be able to deliver the most important part of the meal, the ham.” To help raise money for the Jeans for Genes initiative, you can order your ham via the website thehamrun.com.au, or order in-store at Westridge and The Ridge Meats.

his hero doesn’t wear a cape. But the new star of Volkswagen’s range has ample super attributes. Replacing the former Passat CC, the Arteon 206TSI R-Line arrives wearing dramatic Gran Turismo lines. Did you just scoff? The devil is in the beautiful detail. VW is aiming high with this stunning saloon. Not all good looks are courtesy of a swoopy-roofed silhouette, frame-less glass doors and wide 19-inch wheels, it’s bursting with outstanding technology that has the Arteon knocking on the

door of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3 Series and even company brethren, the Audi A4. Only available in one specification (there are two options: a sound and style package for $2500 and the $2500 sunroof), it’s a lengthy list of standard gear. Luxuries like a power tailgate, soft Nappa leather trim, 9.2-inch infotainment system you can control with hand gestures (no, we’re not joking), automatic parking and push button start mean there is little left on the shelf.

The latest safety tech is also there, including radar cruise control. Colour options include white, along with metallic hues silver, grey, yellow, red, blue or pearl black. Yet it’s not all show. The 206kW engine packs a fair wallop. Plant your foot and you’ll reach 100km/h in rapid time and with a selection of drive modes from sports to comfort to suit driver moods. The Arteon is for those who want the best, yet aren’t afraid to snub the prestige badge.

Local Knowledge & National Strength

Gardening to change your landscape

W

ith your new home finished, your dreams have just about all come true. You have a home not only the envy of your friends, but best of all, with all the fittings, furnishings and colours exactly as you always wanted. It’s perfectly comfortable — literally made just for you. Now it’s time to turn your attention to the block itself and how your brand new home nestles into its new landscape. The next set of questions that arise — how should I go about it, what should I plant — are a little more openended, as your garden can change with the seasons or even with your mood. Talking to a local landscaper or horticulturist would be a good place to start, and be guided by their expertise as you have done with the rest of your home. Let their guidance help you lay out your garden so it doesn’t affect any natural drainage or underground pipes, avoiding plants with large invasive root systems that may affect your foundations, your driveway, fences, or your neighbours. They will be able to advise you on the ideal plants for your climate zone and the adult size, height and root systems of different species. They can also suggest whether a particular plant can be used as a screen for western sun, and which deciduous tree would allow more northern winter sun into your home and is therefore best for summer shading. This local knowledge of the different varieties of plants will not only make it easier to beautify your yard but will, when strategically placed, also help with the energy efficiency of your home. Armed with this knowledge, mark out your gardens, defining areas of garden from areas of lawn. This will help with later maintenance. This is the time to consider if you need to import soil to raise garden beds or if top dressing soil is required. Check the condition of your soil and see what you can do to improve it to give your garden a flying start.

This is the perfect time to lay the pipes for your trickle or drip irrigation systems. These types of irrigation systems will help with water conservation, guarantees each plant receives a drink, and dramatically cuts back your own ongoing maintenance workload. With plants selected, place your plants in position and check coverage and proximity to structures. It is wise not to plant any trees or shrubs right against your home. Upon completion of planting, a layer of mulch — like hay, pine bark, etc — should be applied over the garden to help retain moisture and reduce weed growth. Then just sit back and enjoy watching your whole garden bloom.

INTERIOR DESIGN TREAT FOR TOOWOOMBA I

t was an exciting day for Toowoomba when Nathaniel Revels of Revolution Art and Design came to Harvey Norman Furniture. Nathaniel is the creative director for the company whose products have been featured in household-name shows such as The Block, House Rules and Reno Rumble. When you know, before meeting Nathaniel, that he has more than 10 years’ experience in the retail, homewares and design industry, you expect to be meeting an older man whose role is more about keeping employees in check. Instead, Nathaniel comes across as young and full of energy or perhaps that’s the enthusiasm for his career seeping from him. “How about we take a photo of the hummingbird – it’s stunning,”

Nathanial enthused. Nathaniel is at Harvey Norman to showcase the latest in designs from Revolution Art and Design. As well as the breathtaking hummingbird, there is a furry ox so realistic you feel as though touching it would be soft. The exclusive brand releases new designs quarterly, in-line with current trends. Animals and nature feature strongly, with other stylish pieces including stunning people exhibited with clean lines. There are four in-house designers at Revolution Art and Design, creating bespoke pieces with illustration, graphic design, acrylic painting, watercolour painting and photography. Find a fabulous print for you or a

particular room in your house, and match the rest of your decor.

Scott is the most caring and loving man I have ever met and treats me like a queen every day, I couldn’t imagine my life without him and I am so thankful I can call him my husband,” says Jessica Mutch, nee Wood. The administration assistant and electrical supervisor met at work, and six years later, on November 1, last year they ted the knot at The Ladies Pavilion, Central Park, New York City. “Jess is a driven, devoted and compassionate person and has made me the happiest man alive. My dream is to make sure her dreams come true,” Scott adds. “I knew as soon as she accepted my children like they were her own that she was the one.”

Scott proposed to Jess at his surprise 50th birthday celebration at their home in Toowoomba in December 2015 in front of family and friends. “I was the one that got the biggest surprise that night,” Jess says. With a sophisticated black and white theme throughout their small wedding, the couple had a very unique touch to their nuptials. “We had photos taken all over New York City including Central Park, the New York Public Library, Top of the Rock and Grand Central Station,” Jess says. The reception for the couple was held at Buddakan NYC. “The highlight of the day was when three Melbourne women who we had

met three days prior in Niagara Falls came to our wedding,” Jess says. “It was very special. “We are still good friends with them.” The couple spent six-and-a-half weeks travelling thoughout America for their honeymoon. If Jess and Scott had to offer any advice for couples getting married, it would be this. “Don’t forget the reason behind getting married,” the couple says. “It’s not about the big party, it’s about the commitment and marrying the one you love.”

ARE YOU READY TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL? The new school year is just around the corner and that can be a stressful time

B

y putting a few simple measures in place you can make “back to school” a time for celebration, not confrontation. Know your environment If your child is attending school for the first time, switching schools or transitioning to high school – the change in surroundings can sometimes be overwhelming. A great way to alleviate some of this stress is to meet your child’s teacher/s before the start of the year. Even if it’s just a phone call or an email, it introduces you to somebody who is going to have a strong influence on your child’s life (sometimes for a number of years). Be organised Preparation is key to avoiding school

year mishaps. Have you bought or at least ordered your child’s text books, school supplies and clothing for the coming year. Do they have a backpack or school case that comfortably fits their size and needs? Have you decided how your child will be attending school (and have you explained why they may need to take the bus instead of being dropped at the front gate)? Communication will save a lot of angst closer to the big day. Talk to your child Discussing school routines and what is expected of your child (by you and the school) can give them a vital framework

to work with. By assigning simple, and achievable, goals – you give your child the confidence to plan how their year will progress and how they can “be in charge” of that journey. Explain the fun of meeting new people and making new friends and all the exciting academic, artistic and sporting options they are yet to discover. It suddenly won’t seem so scary. A little bit of preparation on your behalf will create a more ordered, structured and less-stressful start to the school year. And, to anyone who’s a parent, doesn’t that sound like a good thing?

AT THE THEATRE

HUGE SEASON AHEAD FOR USQ ARTWORX

A GREAT SUMMER READ DEFECTORS

BY JOSEPH KANON

Surely this author was a hidden gem for many years — with a long and solid career in the publishing industry, Joseph Kanon has only come into his own as an author in the past several years. But he has come into his own with a flourish! Defectors is the tale of two brothers — publisher Simon Weeks and CIA defector Frank Weeks, who ran for safety behind the Iron Curtain in 1949 after being revealed as a Communist spy. Now, 12 years later, the brothers are reunited in Moscow. Superbly written, Kanon weaves a tale of distrust and intrigue, with the reader feeling as though they’ve taken the trip to post-Cold War Moscow alongside Simon. An unforgettable and thrilling read.

DRIFTWOOD BY CACUS CIRCUS AND 2018 ARTSWORX LAUNCH

A stunning spectacular of amazing feats in balance, strength, agility and more, Cacus Circus brought a gasp-worthy performance to the USQ Artsworx theatre in late November. Crowds were ushered in to the amphitheatre, to an intimate feel created by soft lighting and small round tables set up near the stage with red velvet tablecloths and cheese platters. The audience was introduced to the upcoming 2018 season by Artsworx Manager Mark, who spoke with humour and enthusiasm about the events that underpin USQ’s desire to cultivate ideas, perspective, curiosity and community. A special mention goes to the McGregor School, celebrating 50 years in 2018, and for which there will be an exhibition to celebrate during the year. The seamless performance itself left the audience both gasping in suspense and laughing at the playful antics of the five performers. A highlight for many of the audience was when one of the performers stood on his head on a trapeze, without holding on with hands or feet. A truly spectacular night, the rest of the Artsworx season shall be worth seeing. The reviewer’s ticket was supplied by USQ Artsworx.

ON THE BIG SCREEN DADDY’S HOME 2

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg are a naturally funny fit. Now that he’s successfully co-parenting with his ex-wife’s new partner (Ferrell), Walhberg’s former bad boy, Dusty, has become a little more domesticated — much to the scorn of his own father Kurt (Mel Gibson), a retired astronaut whose take on tough love is almost brutal. When the families decide to jointly host Christmas for the sake of the children, Kurt sees that as the perfect opportunity to stir things up a little bit. While the jokes are wildly uneven, and the storyline is about as formulaic as one would expect from a Christmas comedy, something about this loud and boisterous exploration of modern masculinity strikes a chord.

It is home to a vast and varied geographical expansion, as well as a rich and profound culture. This culture is very diverse and unique, at the same time, multicultural bringing together visitors from around the world to experience their different lifestyle. China’s national heritage is tangible and intangible, holding some of the world’s greatest wonders and historic sites, as well as ethnic festivals, songs and lifestyle. Chinese cuisine has a countless array of fantastic and delicious dishes. However, some of these dishes can be deceiving in their taste. These foods have no limit in their

creativity, surprising people with flavours of sweet, salty, bland, sour or spicy. A great amount of thought has been tailored to each meal with these unique flavours catering to the specific requirements and likes of visitors and locals alike. Walking around the ancient streets of China is a blast from the past. The atmosphere is filled with all kinds of smells and flavours of different street foods. Everywhere you turn, behind every colourful street, you are faced with different local stores and markets selling their products. There will be countless opportunities to try unique street food and experience the true local lifestyle. These different food cultures had a significant impact on how they were

produced during the Chinese middle ages (which saw a steady change in regimes). China went from four warring kingdoms to being the most culturally technological and sophisticated of the developed nations. Because of the Ancient Battles raged against China, we are now able to better appreciate the historical significance of places like The Forbidden City, The Great Wall of China, Terracotta Warriors and the Longji Rice Fields just some of the marvelous destinations that China has to offer. With all the amazing people, fabulous locations, magnificent views and history, this is the perfect getaway for anyone who loves to experience new things or travel on a truly cultural adventure.

NEED A FESTIVE SEASON HEALTH CHECK? BY MANAGING DIRECTOR AND SENIOR FINANCIAL PLANNER OF CREATE FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS, LEANNE MCDONALD

P

ersonal finances are typically top of mind for people during the festive season. Christmas is often linked to a rise in household debt and “spend less, save more” is usually among the top three resolutions made (and broken) yearly. Business owners are often guilty of wearing too many hats and trying to “do it all”. Sadly, the consequences of getting your financial obligations wrong can be

devastating. I have seen various mistakes throughout the year that have put clients and their businesses in crisis. Business owners generally don’t reflect on their business’s performance or financial health until the end of the financial year - to their detriment. Saving a financial health check until May or June leaves little time to implement any required changes. Analysing all aspects of your business

OWN YOUR TOMORROW

over the holiday period may reveal that a product or service is losing you money. Think like your customers: The best way to review your business is take yourself out of the business and think like your customer. What do they want? What are they asking for? What are their problems that you are solving? Then, compare this to what you are actually offering. Christmas is a great time to review this as things slow down and you can work on, rather than in, your business. Running a financially healthy business takes time and planning. Becoming profitable rarely happens due to luck, accident or magic. Avoid the Christmas cash flow crunch: You may be taking a break over the holidays, but unfortunately bills will keep rolling in. You should already be planning January and February work now. Having clients lined up, specials advertised and work flow planned two months in advance ensures your cash flow is regular. You can then schedule jobs, time and rosters, manage your diary more effectively and reduce Christmas stress. Lastly, having a trusted financial adviser can have immeasurable benefits for your business.

No matter what your current situation, Create Financial Solutions can work with you and your family to plan a great future and prepare for any uncertainties life may throw at you. style | promotion FIVE WAYS TO NEGOTIATE WITH YOUR EX-PARTNER ABOUT CHRISTMAS PARENTING ARRANGEMENTS

Katherine Marshall SENIOR SOLICITOR AT BEST WILSON BUCKLEY FAMILY LAW

T

he lead up to Christmas is often difficult for both parents and children from separated families. At times, negotiating with your ex-partner about who will have the children over the Christmas period can seem like a minefield. When both parents are not willing to compromise in relation to these arrangements and you are at a stalemate, sometimes lawyers can be of assistance. However, just a warning, most law firms close over the Christmas and New Year break and are uncontactable during this period. If you are at an impasse with your ex-partner, the following strategies may be of assistance in arriving at a compromise that suits you, the other parent and, most of all, the children! Keep calm Whilst something that the other party may say could infuriate you or appear unreasonable in your eyes, remain calm! Becoming angry often leads to the end

WORKING TOGETHER OVER THE HOLIDAYS of a negotiation. Offer an incentive Sometimes the key to getting the other person over the line on a deal is to offer them an incentive or sweetener to take your proposal. People are more likely to accept an outcome if there is something in it for them. Compromise Negotiating successfully can often require you to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions to resolve the dispute. Just remember that in a negotiation, the outcome might not be either parent’s ideal option. As lawyers we don’t ask our clients to necessarily be happy with the compromised deal, we just ask you to be able to live with it if it means a resolution for you and the children. Let the other person speak Negotiations often fail where one party does not feel heard or listened to. So if the other parent appears itching to say something and fully explain their

reasons for their position, let them. Without feeling heard, most parents will not agree to a compromised solution. Know your argument Sometimes it is useful to do a pros and cons list as to why your proposal is better for the children than the other parent’s. After you have let the other parent state their case, state yours — but do so with solid arguments underpinning your proposal. At the end of the day, you (to some degree) need to convince the other parent of the merits of your proposal. By adopting some of the above negotiation strategies you may have some success in navigating the Christmas period on your own. If all else fails and you are an existing client of Best Wilson Buckley, we do have an emergency mobile number that you are able to contact for some advice ask your family lawyer or one of our team to find out more.

Cooked for 16 hours straight with no MSG whatsoever, this divine meal is the most vivid representation of Vietnam. The thinly-sliced, tender beef melted in your mouth, and the pho was flavoursome and punchy, heavy with the smell of spices, complimented by refreshing bean sprouts. PISCES

IT’S IN THE STARS SAGITTARIUS

Nov 23 – Dec 21 Sagittarians will be eagerly hopping from one foot to the other on Christmas morning. Whether they are watching you open your gift to see your reaction or waiting for their gifts to be given out, Sagittarians love nothing more than family. Freedom is important, as this sign loves nothing better than hitting the open road with the family in tow to go off on adventures.

CAPRICORN

Dec 22 – Jan 20 Capricorns love gifts that are practical, easy to use but must look expensive. They are fantastic at gadgetry and love nothing more than building and designing their own personal space. Power tools and DIY books will go down a treat.

AQUARIUS

Jan 21 – Feb 19 Aquarians love nothing more than a great laugh — it keeps them amused for hours. Perhaps a book on the world’s worst jokes will be just the ticket? They are adventurous, often choosing dangerous pastimes such as hang gliding, skydiving or white-water rafting.

Feb 20 – Mar 20 Pisceans are the dreamers of the Zodiac, so that is why you will often find them laying back looking at the clouds. They are creative and artistic, getting their inspiration from nature. Fantasy colouring books will bring out a beautiful side, or perhaps a blow-up pool toy where they can wittle away the hours drifting along humming merrily to themselves.

ARIES

Mar 21 – Apr 20 Big, bright and colourful — you can tell an Aries person as they stand out from the rest of the flock, making everyone else pale in comparison. They love surprises, so keep them guessing until the last minute, or send them off on a wild treasure hunt. They will love you even more for it, just make sure the final clue is worth their while.

TAURUS

Apr 21 – May 21 Your life revolves around making sure you are nourished, whether it be by food or conversation — both are great for Taurus. When it comes to the ideal gift for the Taurus in your life, look no further than expensive wine, gourmet hampers or enriching their mind with books.

GEMINI

May 22 – June 22 Gemini’s love to problem solve, so making sure you can keep them entertained is the biggest challenge. They don’t lie around doing nothing, they love to go bushwalking, hiking or spend time solving the mysteries of life.

CANCER

June 23 – July 23 Cancerians love to relax a little too much — sometimes it can be a challenge to get them out of their shells at all. You must

use all of you cunning ways to gain their interest, so think of it as your own personal challenge. They can often be found snuggled under the covers, reading to their heart’s content.

LEO

July 24 – Aug 23 Leo people love to keep up-to-date with the latest music trends and can be happily found singing and dancing like there is no tomorrow. Puzzle books or photography books are a great gift idea for Leo’s.

VIRGO

Aug 24 – Sept 24 When it comes to gift ideas for the Virgo person in your life, they love to be organised right down to last detail. No last-minute gifts will be appreciated it is the thought that counts. Travel for Virgo makes life interesting so perhaps luggage or if feeling indulgent then a gift certificate.

LIBRA

Sept 24 – Oct 23 Librans love more, bring me more — doesn’t matter if it is red wine or money, a Libra person will be eagerly rubbing their hands with glee if there are many little presents under the tree come Christmas morning. They do not have to be expensive, if you have taken the time to wrap each gift with care, they will be giggling with happiness.

SCORPIO

Oct 24 – Nov 22 Buying gifts for a Scorpio is easy — simply hand over the cash and they will happily go on a shopping spree. Perhaps new accessories such as a wallet are a great idea — at least that way you have somewhere to stash their cash and give them a surprise.
