Welcome to our August edition of Style Magazine, where we take a peak inside the world of entrepreneurs and small business owners! We catch up with one such local entrepreneur, Steve Claydon, who at 25 already has a hand in five businesses as well as being a dad to two little girls (p14). Our former editor Lisa Machin shares what local face Samantha Healthwood is up to in 2017, and discovers how hard it is to have it all, all at once (p10). Coming up this month is the It’s A Bloke’s Thing luncheon, where our community raises funds to support men with prostate cancer (p12), as well as a day full of family fun learning about different cultures at the annual Toowoomba Languages and Cultures Festival. We also try out Potter’s Boutique Hotel’s restaurant menu, leaving us hungry for more and determined to return (p59). Happy reading, and enjoy the last month of cold before spring arrives!

The balance of

having it all BY LISA MACHIN

FORMER STYLE EDITOR LISA MACHIN CATCHES UP WITH TOOWOOMBA’S OWN CHANNEL NINE STAR SAMANTHA HEATHWOOD.

I am penning this article to debunk a fondly held view of those suffering tall-poppy syndrome. As a journalist myself, I am well aware of the misconception that it takes simply a pretty face to read the news. The glamorous face of Channel Nine’s recently announced regional news push for Queensland, journalist Samantha Heathwood, is a familiar face for Toowoomba residents thanks to her time as a WIN News reporter in the city. Her family moved to the Garden City when Samantha was one year old. Educated at Fairholme and the Glennie School, Samantha is now based in Brisbane but regularly returns for events and to spend time with friends. “Toowoomba is an amazing place – it’s so close-knit,” she says. “You often meet two or three generations of the same family. There’s a real family feel, life is easy and it takes 15 minutes to get anywhere.” And far from bemoaning the foggy mountaintop weather, Samantha views it as a unifying factor. “Because it’s colder it breeds a family feeling – people do more indoor activities at each other’s homes and spend time at friends’ houses.” When we met on a cold Toowoomba morning to share a cuppa, it was easy to see why she became a quickly rising star. Though Samantha undoubtedly has the X-factor a successful news anchor needs, for me it was her work ethic,

10 | August 2017

conduct and knowledge that hit home. She is set to return to our screens from August 14, recently snagging the prestigious anchor role for Queensland regional bulletins with Channel Nine. To be based in Brisbane, Samantha was recently named as one of three Channel Nine regional news presenters and will present six regional bulletins. This includes Nine’s Toowoomba and Darling Downs bulletin, a territory she knows well.

‘‘

I love catching up with friends for lunch at Gip’s and I always make everyone come to the Carnival of Flowers and the Food and Wine Festival. The Heathwood family has enjoyed a long association with Toowoomba. Samantha’s grandfather ran the iconic Heathwood Pharmacy on the corner of Ruthven and Margaret Sts years ago, and her sister more recently owned a shoe shop in Margaret St. And while her family has since relocated to Brisbane, Samantha holds

her hometown in a very dear place. A look over her CV shows she’s done the hard yards to get where she is today, and it should be noted she is juggling motherhood along the way. Her path to success began with humble steps in her home town of Toowoomba… working for free. For a whole year. “Working for free doesn’t mean you’re not getting anything out of it,” Samantha says. “Nobody is better than a job.” Her work ethic and determination were noticed, with Samantha snagging

her first job with WIN News Rockhampton. She’s since chalked up eight years of regional reporting, as well as a gig in Sydney, before moving back to Toowoomba to take a year off with her second child. Mother to two young boys, James, 6, and Henry, 3, Samantha has a message for other parents. “Since Sydney, I’ve been in a no-man’s land work-wise while I took time off to be with my boys,” Samantha says. “And I guess there was some fear of

www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

coming back into the game and feeling like I’d been away for too long. But I remember someone saying to me ‘the cream will always rise to the top’ – meaning if you have the skills and drive, then you have every chance to get that great job.” Samantha says parents returning to the workforce after taking years off to raise children shouldn’t be “frozen out” by their own mental barriers. “Everyone’s careers wax and wane, and I want to provide hope for other people who’ve taken time out, have put

everything into their kids for the last five or six years,” she says. “It’s scary coming back into the workforce, but it’s not as daunting as you might think.” Samantha says her mum spent three months in Sydney helping her with son James. Samantha would begin work at 2am to write and then present Nine’s early morning bulletin at 5am, before going on to write the news bulletin for The Today Show. And while her career is something she is passionate about, she stresses not to get lost in “trying to have everything”. “Don’t forgo family things or things with friends for the sake of your career,” Samantha advises. “They’re things you regret down the track – missing special occasions with your family.” When Samantha returned to Brisbane after her marriage break-up, she made the decision to work just two days per week, to ensure she was spending quality time with her young sons. “I started back from scratch and eventually got three days a week permanent part-time, and then this job (anchor for Nine’s Queensland regional news) came up two years later.” It’s a work-life balance that she admits, while difficult, is important. “You can have a great life and tick all the boxes – career, family, house – but you also need to tick happiness,” Samantha says.

style | it’s a bloke thing

It’s A Bloke Thing luncheon

Now in it’s seventh year, It’s A Bloke Thing foundation is getting ready for its annual luncheon on Tuesday, August 15, at Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport. The committee uses the event to raise money for prostate cancer research and education. “I was keen to get involved because, what became apparent after I was diagnosed, is men don’t discuss these health issues and if detected early, prostate cancer was well and truly curable,” Mr Wagner, one of the founding committee members, says. “The event we have at the airport to raise money for prostate cancer is probably the biggest fundraiser on the calendar in Toowoomba and across the country, and I am forever humbled by the generosity of people who attend this event.”

ManUp! Australia supports It’s A Bloke Thing When Jill Costello and her husband Brian founded ManUp! Australia in 2010, it was a huge success. “There was very little support out there,” Jill says of what they discovered when Brian was diagnosed with prostate cancer. To begin with, ManUp! was more about running a program of prostate care nurses.

12 | August 2017

“But we quickly discovered that knowledge was poor in men,” Jill says. Now the goal of ManUp! is to educate men about their prostate and health, so they can catch cancer early. ManUp! Australia and It’s A Bloke Thing work closely together. “We stand in awe of the luncheon,” Jill says.

Prostate care nurse supports IABT Prostate cancer care nurse Jo Hiscock is one of only five working in Queensland, making our region very lucky. “I’m told continuously by the men that they don’t know how the men did it before, without the support,” Mrs Hiscock says. “We have everything here in Toowoomba. There’s no reason to go out of Toowoomba for any of their treatments, bar one,” she says. The role Mrs Hiscock finds herself in is a fulfilling one, helping men and their carers. “I don’t think we should ever forget that these men have people in their lives as well, and often their carers are alone,” she says. Mrs Hiscock also provides support and education for other nursing staff, coordinates men’s care programs and helps negotiate the healthcare system in their journey.

Mayor Paul Antonio on the IABT luncheon For Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio, the IABT luncheon is a cause close to his heart after having a prostate cancer diagnosis in his late 40s. “I think the most remarkable aspect of the IABT campaign is the awareness it has raised about men’s health,” he says. ”It has provided a local platform for us as men to talk about a subject that was previously considered a private

matter – often to the detriment of our families. “As mayor, I am heartened by any group working for the good of our community. “It’s always a great day out to think about what a fantastic region we live in, how generous and willing people are to help each other and, importantly, to take stock about our health.”

Jumping in

the deep end BY JESSICA KRAMER

WHEN YOU HEAR SOMEONE SAY THEY ARE INVOLVED WITH FIVE BUSINESSES, IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE THEM AT NEAR-BANKRUPTCY ONLY A FEW YEARS BEFORE.

Let alone when this person is only 25, married and has two children. But this is exactly where local man Steve Claydon finds himself now. “I was pretty much done after the first six months of business,” Steve says. “Then I went all-in for January, February, March the following year... and learnt some hard lessons along the way. “But something worked, because

business started to speed up from there.” We meet in his office, which has been newly fitted-out with a mix of stylish retro and new furniture and decor. “The core business is Equip Consulting Australia, which is a consulting company around sales training, leadership consulting and social media marketing,” Steve explains. “Then I co-own Bunker Espresso with

Stephen Payton. “And I’ve just started another company called Equip Creative with Dan Vonhoff, where we help people create content for digital platforms like blogs, videos, vlogs. “And a book publishing company called Shoebox Publications.” Steve has also written four books over the past few years, including most recently The Opposite Effect.

When asked what inspired him to go into business, Steve has a humorous response. “Probably being naive,” he laughs. “I’ve always been a person who is ambitious but also has a high tolerance for risk — so if I find something I want to do, I commit to it a thousand per cent.” Being such a busy working man and a father to two little girls isn’t easy.

“It’s really hard,” Steve says. “I think the idea of balance is a bit of a myth. “I’ve never really found someone who does it well — because whenever you’re saying ‘yes’ to one thing, you’re saying ‘no’ to something else.” This meant having a really honest conversation with his wife, Anna, about how much their lives would change. “The next 10 years will probably be the hardest working years of my life,” Steve says. “I think if I didn’t have that conversation at the start, then it would have been a lot harder. “And Anna is amazing. She’s a great stay-at-home mum, she helps me, and if it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t be here.” The couple met when Anna was 14 and Steve 15, and have been together since. “Anna helps me to be grounded, and is teaching me to be present when my mind won’t shut up,” Steve says. “When people say ‘how do you know if you’re an entrepreneur, a businessperson, or an innovator, or a thinker?’, I think it’s when you get gifted the curse that your mind never shuts up.”

Cosmetic Treatments JULIE BRADFORD THE BRADFORD CLINIC

Platelet-rich Plasma is a treatment using concentrated platelets normally present in blood. As well as being important for blood clotting, these platelets are a source of growth factors that assist the body to repair itself naturally after damage and to stimulate new tissue regeneration. PRP treatments are used to rejuvenate skin including wrinkles and sun-damage. The plasma is easily separated from your own blood by centrifuge, and there is no risk of disease transmission or allergic reactions. A slight sting and minor bruising are the only side effects. Improved skin tone and texture can be expected within three weeks. The process can be further enhanced by adding a hydrating natural ‘filler’ to the injecting process. Because the enriched plasma encourages the body to heal faster, PRP is also used to treat musculoskeletal injuries including acute muscle tears and chronic tendon injuries such as tennis elbow, Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis and golfer’s elbow. There is ongoing medical research into the use of PRP in osteoarthritis, including knees and hips. PRP is also used to improve urinary incontinence in women, using the recently popularised technique called the ‘O-shot’. Come and see The Bradford Clinic at suite 2, Clifford Place, 25 Isabel St, to discuss your treatments. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

Your weekend best After a week of nine-to-five corporate wear or donning the same uniform, the weekend can be an exciting time to look forward to in terms of fashion. While it’s easy to assume we would have a cupboard full of weekend wear for coffee expeditions or heading to the shops, it can be hard to put together that “in-between” outfit, that’s better than your active wear but not as nice as party wear.

First of all, if you don’t have these staples — grab them: ◆ Black skinny or straight jeans ◆ Black ankle boots ◆ Versatile jacket, whether that’s in a camel colour, black, denim, grey or similar ◆ Skivvy Now that we have the main staples sorted (as well as your additional

favourites), here are some easy ways to dress up your weekend wear. ◆ Vests — whether it’s a gorgeous faux fur or a cute puffer vest, these are so easy to throw over a warm skivvy with jeans, and they will keep you toasty. ◆ Scarves — This is by far the easiest way to dress up an outfit. Throw on a scarf and it keeps your outfit fresh, colourful and — most importantly — unique, every single time. They’re also a cheap way to dress up an outfit rather than buying a new top or skirt every time. Continue adding to your scarf collection and be the envy of your friends. ◆ Hats — A gorgeous felt hat is a great way to make a statement on the weekend. They add a unique, fun and dainty touch to your look. Also, keep an eye out for beanies and berets when it gets really chilly. ◆ Dresses, tights and boots — Long-sleeved or warm dresses are absolutely wonderful to have in winter — and so easy. Once you find some that you like, you can have them in the cupboard, pair them with tights or stockings, some groovy staple boots, and you’re set.

Get suited for success BY MORAG GREALY FASHION COLUMNIST

Style Magazine welcomes new fashion columnist, Morag Grealy Shoulder pads, cinched waist belts and outrageously big hair are styles that may belong in the 80s, but the message they sent is still an important one today. We can thank our foremothers for bravely asserting their feminine power within the boys’ clubs of the corporate world because since this time, women have made leaps in this arena. In fact, Forbes states “a golden age for women entrepreneurs has begun”. However, given the turn-out and passion at this year’s women’s marches in New York and London and the gender

pay gap disparity still being just as prevalent as ever, is it up to the women of today’s workforce to take hold of the power dressing baton once more? Australian fashion icon, and a woman at the head of a successful 50-year-old business, Carla Zampatti was asked recently what key pieces every woman should have in her work wardrobe. Topping the list for Carla was the “pant suit”. Is donning the lady suit the key to helping us break that glass ceiling once

and for all? Maybe it’s not quite that simple, but it could be your chance to embrace an androgynous fashion trend and have a little fun at work. With top runway brands like Celine, Alexa Chung and Victoria Beckham pumping out stunning suits for their recent collections, maybe it’s time we got a little more comfortable with the look – and our power, at that.

While in more recent years this iconic headwear was donned by only the “artsy” people, the beret’s popularity has hit mainstream once again. Fashion icon Christian Dior’s most recent collection for Autumn/Winter ’17 and ’18 paraded models down the catwalk with some very stylish hats. Most fashionable right now are dark coloured berets, such as black and navy, but deep tones of more vibrant colours can look stunning if paired well with a classy outfit. Adding a touch of glitter, rather than the typical felt beret, is also an on-trend option to liven up your winter wardrobe.

Celebrity diamonds Elizabeth Taylor once famously said “big girls need big diamonds” and she wasn’t kidding. Elizabeth was married eight times – twice to Richard Burton who gave her the Taylor-Burton – a whopping 69.42 carat pear shaped diamond worth an estimated $8.8million USD. The original rough was found in 1966 in the Premier Mine in South Africa and was weighted at 240.80 carats. After Burton’s death in 1979, Liz Taylor sold the stone and reportedly received $2.8million which she donated in his memory to a hospital in Biafra. The Hope Diamond, also known as Le Bleu de France, is one of the world’s most legendary and recognisable gems. Deep blue in colour, it weighs in at a whopping 45.52 carats. Formed approximately 1.1 billion years ago, the Hope Diamond is notorious for its supposed curse. The diamond was purportedly stolen from the eye of a sculpted statue of the goddess Sita in India and has been

bringing misfortune to those who have owned or worn it since. Add to this a varied history – which includes being owned by King Louis XIV, stolen during the French Revolution, sold to raise money for charity and then finally donated to the Smithsonian Institution - the Hope Diamond is truly unique. The Cullinan Diamond, at 3,106.75 carats (about 635grams and over 10cm in length), is the largest rough gem-quality diamond ever discovered. The Cullinan was found by miner Thomas Evan Powell in 1905 in a South African mine owned by Sir Thomas Cullinan. The massive diamond was bought by the South African government and presented to the British King Edward VII on his birthday two years later. The Cullinan has since been cut into nine smaller stones, with the biggest of

them known as the Great Star of Africa. A second part of the Cullinan was fashioned into the cushion shaped diamond in the centre-front of the Imperial State Crown of Great Britain. For her third marriage to rapper Kanye West, Kim Kardashian accepted a more than 15 carat diamond ring. The ring is rumoured to be worth anywhere from $1.25 million USD to as much as $8 million USD.

THROW OFF THE WINTER BLUES T

h days may still be cold, but we are he on the countdown to spring and all the newness that comes with that welcome change of season. If you’re like a lot of other people, the change into spring can catch you completely by surprise. Here’s our top tips to ensure you’re spring ready: ■ Winter’s harsh temperatures can not only make it difficult to get out of bed of a morning, but also have a very drying effect on our skin. To get that fresh healthy glow for spring we recommend weekly use of a good exfoliating body scrub to remove dead cells from the skin surface. Coffee scrubs are right on trend at present. These scrubs contain coffee grounds as the exfoliant, as well as a combination of oils to leave your skin feeling smooth and silky soft. Priceline Pharmacy stock a wide range of these scrubs priced from $9.99. ■ We all recognise when we get thirsty in the hotter weather, but drinking eight glasses or more of water

each day is just as important during the cooler months to keep us looking healthy and hydrated. In fact, our skin is even thirstier during this time, so moisturising from head to toe each day is vital in helping us achieve spring ready skin. No matter what type of skin you have, we are sure to have a moisturiser to suit both your skin and your budget.

■ We all love our winter comfort foods, but sometimes, when the weather suddenly becomes unseasonally warm, we find that our spring wardrobe is a little snug. If this is something you are concerned about, Priceline Pharmacy stock a wide range of products to help you ensure your spring clothing will fit comfortably. From meal substitute shakes to supplements that improve metabolism, we have everything you need to get back into shape. In addition, Priceline Pharmacy Westridge’s Health Station also offers users links to healthy diet and exercise programs, including delicious recipes. ■ Spring is a season of new growth,

with plants lying dormant through winter bursting into life. Whilst pleasant to the eye, this new plant growth often brings a host of problems to the allergy sufferer. They say forewarned is forearmed, so with that in mind, now is the perfect time to come in and have a chat to one of our trained staff about how you can best prepare for your allergy war. Priceline Pharmacy stocks a wide selection of natural and medicinal products to combat every allergy symptom.

■ Last but by no means least, spring heralds the beginning of fresh new fashions and colours. This spring’s colour trends will be all about bronzed glowing skin with pops of bright colour on lips and eyes and bright pink or red blush. Combine these colourful pops with glitter and you have a look that will be as fresh as the first day of spring! So whether you’re heading out into the sunshine for a picnic or off to celebrate the spring racing carnival, Priceline Pharmacy has all the products to need to get the latest look.

They are light on the skin, which feels really nice.” Lisa loves the ease of her routine, which is a time-saver she values as she has 10-year-old twin boys. Lisa’s routine: AM: Ultra Hydrating Milk Cleanser; Ultra C10+ Firming Serum; Ultra Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF30. PM: Ultra Hydrating Milk Cleanser; Ultra A Skin Perfecting Serum; Ultra Moisturiser Cream. “I’ve really noticed the new softness and freshness of my skin – you have to look after your skin in Australia.”

Keep your lips soft and moisturised throughout the westerlies with this delicious lip scrub and remember to apply a good quality lip balm afterwards. ◆ Half cup sugar ◆ Half cup oil of your choice i.e. coconut or sweet almond oil ◆ Tablespoon raw honey ◆ Tablespoon of glycerine ◆ Teaspoon of bi-carb soda ◆ Quarter teaspoon Vitamin E or a capsule ◆ Essential oils of your choice — try orange oil and peppermint essence Mix together and store in small glass jars in the fridge. Top skin tips for winter Whether the whipping wind is depleting it of it’s natural oils or nasty pimples seem to be arriving, winter seems to be the dreaded season for skin. EXFOLIATE

So, what can you do to keep your skin soft, dewy and hydrated through the cold, Toowoomba months? Here are some top tips.

MOISTURISE AFTER WASHING

Applying moisture to damp skin seals in that fabulous hydration that we crave so much in winter. Find the perfect moisturiser for you and keep it close to your shower.

DRINK YOUR WATER

While hot chocolates seem much more appealing on a cool winter night, you need to keep up water — trust me, your skin will thank you for it later. Add a little lemon to shake it up.

While the point of exfoliating is getting rid of dead skin cells (doesn’t sound super nice), the whole process is actually so much fun! There’s some gorgeous exfoliants available in divine, beautifully moisturising scents. Treat yourself, your face (or your body!) to a delicious scrub of your choice and stay hydrated this winter. Hydrate from the inside out If you’re not a huge fan of drinking lots of water, try consuming food with high

water content such as watermelon, apples, oranges, kiwifruit, celery, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and carrots. These will bump up your water intake and have lots of other redeeming goodies in them as well.

CHANGE YOUR CLEANSER

Oftentimes we need to change our cleanser for different seasons. Look into something more hydrating for winter to suit your skin type.

The professional make-up balance How do you find balance in how you wear your make-up in the workplace or for your own business? Here at Style Magazine we have some flexibility, as comes with the nature of the job, but not everyone is so lucky. You may find yourself in a position at work where you feel experimentation with new make-up trends may not “fit in with the culture of your workplace or business. Here are some tips on how to liven up your make-up without overdoing it.

EYESHADOW

One of the beauties of eyeshadow is how versatile it is. You can go all out with bright colours for the evening and tone it down for the workplace, while still using some adventurous colours.

COLOURED MASCARA

On-trend right now is coloured mascara and eyeliner. While you may or may not be able to get away with bright eyeliner in your

business, mascara is more subtle yet still interesting.

LIPSTICK

Last summer saw a trend of brightly coloured lipsticks sweep the nation, with many colours against the norm. While going out of vogue for some, deep purples and orange tints are still worn and are a little more subtle than bright yellow, for example.

Stubble trouble Step aside, ladies! It’s time for the guys to take control of the mirror and bathroom bench space. The hipster beard has taken the world by storm, but the truth is they’re not for every guy. Here are some time-tested tips for a smoother shave.

STEP 1: PREPARATION

Preparation is key to preventing irritation, razor burns and cuts. Begin by rinsing your face with a pre-shave soap and warm water. This will help open your pores and soften whiskers, making it easier to shave. Pro tip: It’s best to shave after a hot shower. Steam from the shower opens the pores and softens facial hair.

STEP 2: APPLY SHAVING CREAM

Invest in a shaving cream that is rich and creamy rather than foamy. This will help create a barrier between your skin and the razor. Remember, if you have sensitive skin, use products labelled to suit. Apply an even layer of shaving cream over your facial hair using circular motions. Finish with an upward stroke to raise the hair – this will make it easier to shave. Allow the shaving cream to sit on the skin for a few moments to moisten and soften facial hair.

BY TENNIELLE COPSON BEAUTY SPECIALIST

STEP 3: USE A SHARP RAZOR

A dull blade can cause itchiness and razor burn. Blades should be replaced after five to 10 shaves (depending on the thickness of your beard). Gently glide the razor over your face in the direction of hair growth. Use short one to two inch strokes and run the razor under hot water after each stroke to remove any accumulated facial hair and cream. Pro tip: When shaving your top lip, stick your tongue between your gums and top lip to stretch the area and prevent nicks and cuts.

STEP 4: SHAVE THE NECK AREA LAST

Leave this sensitive area until last to allow the shaving cream time to soften the hair. To help the blade glide more smoothly, tilt your head back to pull your skin taut. Again, make sure to use short, gentle stokes.

STEP 5: RINSE AND PAT DRY

After shaving, rinse your face with cold water and pat dry with a clean towel.

STEP 6: APPLY AFTERSHAVE LOTION

Aftershave lotion will help soothe irritation and release moisture into your skin. Pro tip: If you have sensitive skin, try soothing coconut oil.

Bare it all As the chill hits in the winter months, we all tend to hibernate a bit and develop a ‘what’s the point’ attitude when it comes to leg hair removal, often choosing to conceal our limbs under jeans or leggings. With spring on the horizon, why not learn the facts about different hair removal methods to find out what best suits you?

SHAVING

Pros: Shaving is inexpensive, quick, painless and uncomplicated. You don’t need an appointment and the result is smooth, hairless skin. Cons: Razor burns, ingrown hairs and cuts. Only lasts one to three days.

DEPILATORIES

A depilatory is a cream that removes hair from the skin’s surface. They work by reacting with the protein structure of the hair, so the hair dissolves and can be washed or wiped away. Pros: Depilatories work quickly, are readily available and relatively inexpensive. Cons: Applying depilatories can be messy and many people dislike the odour. If you have sensitive skin, you might have an allergic reaction.

WAXING

Wax is spread on the area of skin where the unwanted hair is growing. The wax is then pulled off, taking the hair root and dead skin cells with it. Waxing is a longer lasting option. To improve your waxing experience, beauticians recommend exfoliating and moisturising regularly. Pros: Waxing leaves the area smooth and is long lasting. Hair regrowth often looks lighter and less noticeable than it is after other methods of hair removal, such as shaving. Lasts three to six weeks. Cons: Pain, plus redness, inflammation and bumps after waxing.

www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

BODY SUGARING

Body sugaring works by using a room temperature ball of sugar, honey, lemon and water, which is spread across the hair follicles. The beautician then flicks off the sugar in the direction of the hair growth and the hair slides out, rather than it being ripped against the growth as is the process with waxing. Pros: Each treatment refines the hair and will eventually result in a depletion of hair follicles. It is a natural alternative that does not contain any foreign chemicals. Cons: Less painful than waxing, but still painful. In some cases, can result in skin irritation or inflammation.

PULSED LIGHT/LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Laser hair removal uses a single wavelength of light (laser) to target, heat and damage hair follicles. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Variable Pulsed Light (VPL) work on the same principle of heating and damaging the hair follicle, but instead of using a single wavelength, a flash lamp emits hundreds of wavelengths in each burst of light. Laser treatment works best on people with dark hairs as the melanin in dark hair absorbs more of the laser energy. It can take up to six sessions and results can be permanent. The sensation has been likened to the feeling of an elastic band snapping against the skin. Pros: This type of hair removal is long lasting and large areas of skin can be treated at the same time. Cons: Needs multiple treatments and can be expensive.

KIDNEY STONES ARE A COMMON HEALTH ISSUE

Kidney stones: Here’s what you need to know BY DR DEVANG DESAI

What is the risk of developing kidney stones? Stone disease is very prevalent. It is estimated 10% of the population will develop stone disease in their lifetime. A person who develops a kidney stone has a 50% risk of developing another stone in the next 10 years. Are there different types of kidney stones? Yes, there are various types of stones — calcium oxalate, uric acid, triple phosphate, calcium phosphate and cystine stones. Can some stones be dissolved with medication?

Uric acid stones that are small can be dissolved with medication if they do not cause obstruction (pain, fever). What if I have recurrent stones? Recurrent stone formers should get their stone analysed to evaluate the type of stone. They must also get a 24-hour urine analysis to evaluate why they are forming recurrent stones. What diet do I need to follow to prevent recurrent stones? General advice is to drink plenty of water, reduce salt in the diet and reduce animal protein. It is important to have a normal intake

of calcium. A high intake of animal protein can increase stone formation. Avoid large quantities of meat, eggs and dairy products. Do not add salt to your food at the table. What are the available options to treat urinary stones? There are three treatment options — Stones can be treated provided patients do not have a concurrent infection. If there are signs of infection (fever, chills, etc) then drainage of the kidney as a temporary measure is necessary, followed by definitive treatment of the stone at a later date. ESWL (extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy) — the stone is broken using sound waves and the resultant stone fragments are passed along with urine. This procedure can be used in small radio-opaque (those seen on x-ray) stones. ESWL cannot be done in pregnancy, patients on blood-thinning medication (eg warfarin, xarelto, dabigatran, clopidogrel, brillanta), very overweight individuals. Ureteroscopy and lithotripsy – this involves passing a fine telescope via the urinary tract and fragmenting the stone using either a manual stone breaking device or a holmium laser. The fragments are either retrieved using a basket or are small enough to be passed in the urine. This procedure can be utilised for most stones. PCNL (percutaneous nephrolithotomy) – this involves puncturing the kidney via a small hole in the back and extracting the stone fragments after breaking the stone. This procedure is usually reserved for large stones or stones in calyceal diverticula (small pockets in the kidney). For more details visit www.toowoombaurology.com.au or call 4632 8481.

Looking after yourself as a business owner

calendar at least three times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes. There are some great boot camps or clubs around that offer sessions to cater for the busy person and can condense a workout for you that will give you the best 30-45mins of your day. ◆ Be sure to drink plenty of water daily – keeping yourself hydrated helps you to think clearly. ◆ Avoid too much caffeine, as this can cause insomnia. Large amounts have been known to cause headaches, anxiety and irregular heart beat and can affect your digestive system. ◆ Keep your gym gear in your car so that you can’t find excuses to go straight home because you forgot your gear.

◆ Eat regularly throughout the day. If you don’t have time to sit down for lunch, make sure you have plenty of healthy snacks such as fruit, veggie sticks, tins of tuna, rice or rice thins. If there is time in your day then be sure to add a nice meat and salad for lunch along with your snacks. Eating at least every two hours helps prevent those big hunger pangs between meals and overindulging at main meals. Skipping meals will not help you lose weight and you’re more likely to make up for it by eating more than necessary at your next meal. ◆ Make time to read. This can be very beneficial to help you improve your health and life on many levels including your business.

As an owner of a new fitness business I know all too well the benefits of keeping fit and healthy. It is important as a trainer to not only look the part but to feel it too, but this still applies to any business you may have. When working for yourself, you need to be sure you are in tip-top shape or you could find not only yourself suffering but your business too, as your business is a reflection of you. So here a few tips to help take care of YOU: ◆ Get a good night sleep! This can be difficult when you first start up a business so I recommend a good meditation or go-to-sleep app to help you get that six to eight hours of restful sleep. ◆ Eat a healthy breakfast. This replenishes the overnight loss of glucose and other essential nutrients to keep your energy levels up that you will need for the day running your business. ◆ Pencil in some exercise time in your

Beauty and fitness Pushing your body to its limits and exposing yourself to the elements can leave an active person time poor and grasping at straws on how to stay on top of their personal beauty concerns without breaking the bank. The first and most important tip is cleaning. You not only need to wash your skin after exercising but before as well. The next trick is to protect your skin with a good quality moisturiser containing sunscreen to help prevent sunburn, wind burn and moisture loss. Use specialised makeup that also contains an SPF like a mineral powder. Enjoy soothing therapies and massage to revive your senses, rejuvenate your body and soothe your soul.

How does she do it?

BY LAUREN HOPE MARKETING COMPANY DIRECTOR

Hello! My name is Lauren and I am a mother, business owner, wife, friend, sister, daughter and the list goes on. Each day I juggle daycare drop-off, client meetings, business deadlines, household chores and — somewhere in there — some time to myself. I am not alone: each day I am inspired by the people in life who are all living the same juggling act.

I must admit I regularly hear the question “how do you do it?” but I have a simple answer — it’s my job. I made the conscious choice to start my business after I realised working in a conventional 9-5pm position wasn’t going to suit my personal circumstances, plus I always had a yearning for more. My marketing business was born over a family dinner with one too many wines and an attitude of “what’s the worst that

could happen?” Being in business makes you accountable. It’s all about making a commitment to your clients, to your family, to the prosperity of your business and ultimately to yourself. Sure, it can be exhausting, but it is also very rewarding. It’s all about perfecting that balancing act. This is something many people have been doing since the dark ages because working, raising a family, keeping in contact with friends and forever multi-tasking isn’t a foreign concept in our current economy. We reside in a region that is flourishing at the moment. It’s an exciting time to be in business. You either choose to ride the wave or you don’t — everyone has their own journey. It’s the people with drive; the people with true passion who success comes looking for. And like them, I just prefer to knuckle down and get on with it. It’s a great way to approach business and a great way to approach life. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

THE PERFECT BROW Amy Jean, the international brow queen who styles the arches of celebrities including Dannii Minogue, Naomi Campbell and Delta Goodrem, shares her tips for achieving the perfect brow. A WELL-shaped brow can slim a rounder face, minimise the look of fine lines around the eyes, even take years off your appearance. Brow expert Amy Jean is considered one of the best brow artists in the world, with salons throughout Australia and international pop up salons in London, Paris, Milan, New York and LA. We asked her how to raise an eyebrow, beautifully. Should we follow eyebrow trends? If so what is in store for 2017/18? It’s nice to appreciate trends, but we prefer to shape a client’s brows based on considering face and eye shape as well as hair and skin tones. Generally, a thicker brow is a softer look and less ageing than a thin brow. Waxing or tweezing, or a combo of both? Wax to remove the fluff, and tweezing

38 | August 2017

for perfecting angles. What’s the most common mistake women make with their brows? Over-plucking or over applying the wrong colour product. What are the essential tools for beautiful brows? A good quality brush for applying brow powder and a tweezer that works. Is there a formula as to where the brow starts and finishes? Yes, grab a brush to use as a marker. For the start point, hold the brush from the bridge of the nose pointing straight up to the hairline. Where it crosses over with the browline, use a pencil to mark a dot here. For the tails, hold the brush from the base of the nose out towards the temple. Mark a dot that lines up with where the brow line should reach. A little bit of extra length will help widen the eyes and open them up.

Senior Associate and Town Planning Consultant BCERT Consulting

What gave you the idea for your business? My husband decided to leave working for councils and start his own business. Initially I was just assisting him, but having been a teacher for some years, I decided on a change of career. Graham suggested town planning as it was so closely aligned to building certification. What were the early years like? They were hard work as I was learning a lot more about building certification, had a young child at home with me, and was studying as well. There was no time to spare…ever. Looking back, what advice would you give to your past self? Running a business can be both rewarding and exhausting both at the same time. One big piece of advice I would give myself is to try and have more breaks from the business to recharge the batteries. We are the first business that people go to when they have an issue, even if the problem is the builder’s.

Debbie Noller Owner and Teacher Academy of Dance

What gave you the idea for your business? I have been a dance student since a young child and have never thought of teaching dance as a business — it is a passion that turned into a business, as it takes so many hours of my week. I have been self-employed since the age of seventeen, and don’t know what else I would enjoy doing. What were the early years like? I certainly had to work outside my dance school in order to live. I taught every student myself and had a personal relationship with them all. Now I have other teachers in the schools, as it is not humanly possible to teach every class and genre myself. I love having ‘old’ students come up to me saying ‘you taught me when I was six’ and they now have grown-up children. Looking back, what advice would you give to your past self? It was a different time in the late 70s and people appreciated your time and efforts much more. However, I understand that life is quicker and people expect everything at the push of a button. Kids tend to want it all

Tracy Randall Proprietor and Owner Anzac Avenue Wreckers

What gave you the idea for your business? My husband. What were the early years like? They were fun and a lot simpler Yellowpages and the local paper were the only advertising you needed. Mail came to only one mail box. Looking back, what advice would you give to your past self? Don’t stress over the little details. What have you learnt from the experience? There is a lot of red tape and hurdles to jump through, and not all are achievable. However, it’s the people along the way that make the journey enjoyable. How do you juggle work and home? With the support of the entire family. We all have our roles to play at work and home. What do you do for leisure? Youth group on a Friday night with my daughters at a local church.

What have you learnt from the experience? I have learnt so much about the building industry. I’m now regarded as an expert. Builders ring me with the most bizarre questions and I usually get it right. I’ve also learnt that our builders can be some of the most wonderful people that you could meet, and often they are really, really smart, despite them thinking that they are not. How do you juggle work and home? Not very well. My son constantly begs us to stop talking about work. Studying whilst working was even harder. The downside of running your own business is that you never stop working, even when you try. What do you do for leisure? I love reading and I play silly phone games. I don’t have very much ‘me’ time though. Where do you see yourself in ten years? I’d like to be retired and living on a desert island, or maybe Melbourne, with my darling husband and direct access for my son (and a bit of shopping as well). without passion or effort. What have you learnt from the experience? Children still just want somebody’s time and attention, but they have so many activities to choose from. To choose an activity or hobby and stick to it long enough to gain the rewards is not as common. No screen can give the high or physical challenge of music and dance. How do you juggle work and home? It’s easy now, but when I had four children at home on a farm, they were all good cooks and problem-solvers when mum spent time with other people’s children. What do you do for enjoyment away from the busy workplace? Home and family time is still the best. I vary between a quiet read to chasing cattle around on a four-wheeler bike. Where do you see yourself in ten years regarding your business? I hope that the student teachers I have been mentoring can eventually be a better version of me, but hopefully I can still be interested in dance teaching. Where do you see yourself in ten years? 10 years is to far away to predict! Our industry is currently going though rapid changes with planning for driverless cars, electric cars and the recent closing of vehicle manufacturing in Australia.

Love at first... laugh It was love at first shared laughter — except at the time they weren’t aware of it. Arranged by mutual friends, the newly-wed couple Brock and Peta McIntyre (nee Whatmore) met at Amigo’s for their blind date and became instant best friends. When asked about the proposal, the bride answered it was a night she would never forget. Brock had pre-arranged for fairy lights to be lit along the path to a big tree as soon as they stepped outside for their “walk” at Gip’s Restaurant, fooling Peta, who had assumed they were motion sensored lights. It was under that tree he proposed. She said yes. With a classic and elegant theme in navy, yellow and a splash of red, they

tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at Rangeville Community Church on Saturday, July 1, with their reception held at the Highfields Cultural Centre. “When we first started dating, Brock would try to draw a heart on me to say he loves me, but they always ended up looking more like apples,” Peta laughs. “So in response I’d say apple until he drew something closer to a heart.” A sentiment that carried into their wedding as a personalised and unique bonbonniere — an apple. The highlight of the reception was the groom’s speech, straight from the heart and not a dry eye in the room including the bride’s. Radiating love and smiles all around they thanked everyone who attended, near and far. Especially to Brett Buckley, from

Wippell’s, who provided a vehicle last-minute for the couple. “At the end of the day the only thing that truly matters is that you are marrying the person you love and have chosen to spend the rest of your life with,” Peta says. “Your wedding day is one day. “Your marriage is for the rest of your life.”

Getting outside the square BY JOSHUA DOWLING

Reputations precede...in the case of the all-new Land Rover Discovery that’s a very good thing. Toowoomba Jaguar Land Rover has officially welcomed the sleek 2017 Discovery. The square lines of old have been banished, replaced by a distinctive modern Land Rover appearance. Despite the former shape forming a long queue of followers, this all-new variant already possesses a growing fan base. Several of the all-new Discovery

models were pre-sold even before customers have been behind the wheel. “The reputation of Discovery is so strong and the other interesting thing with the all-new model is that a lot of these buyers are new entrants into our brand, prepared to buy on the back of the reputation,” Toowoomba Land Rover dealer principal David Russell said. “The Discovery shape has Range Rover influence — they have stepped up quite a few notches in luxury fit and feel. “It’s moving in a whole new direction

— you still have that phenomenal off-road ability but also that feel of luxury that is so much more upmarket.” The new model is set to take a big step up from the previous model in the same way the Discovery 3 did from the Discovery 2 in 2005. There are three diesel options, a 2.0-litre turbo four in two states of tune and a 3.0-litre V6, matched to an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. Each comes in four equipment grades - S, SE, HSE and HSE Luxury.

ALL-NEW DISCOVERY

ALL-TERRAIN PROGRESS CONTROL One of the many innovative features in the All-New Discovery is All-Terrain Progress Control. This manages the engine and brakes, so that the vehicle maintains a comfortable and steady off-road speed automatically. Freshening up your winter interior You don’t have to wait for spring to refresh your home There often comes a day about mid- to late- winter, where you look around your home and wish for a spring re-vamp. So why wait for spring to arrive before giving your home a new look? Retouching your living spaces doesn’t have to be expensive – you can even do it without repainting, which is good news for the renter. Here are some handy tips on giving your dull space a fresh new look: Update the colour scheme This can actually be done without massive expense, by just updating your objet de jars, cushions, rugs and throws. Many home wares stores now colour-code their decor, which makes your shopping even easier. Choose a colour and work with varying shades, or pick two or three complimenting colours. Particularly when impatient for spring, you may wish to use bright and vibrant colours

ENJOY PUTTING EXTRA COLOUR INTO YOUR HOME

to add extra cheer. Change lighting The light that filters into a room can make all the difference, especially when it’s cold and dreary outside. Add a mirror to the wall opposite a window to add extra light and an illusion of more space. Alternatively, trick your eyes by investing in some lighter colours curtains instead of thick, dark ones. Even when simply framing your window, pale colours can give the impression of extra brightness. Rearrange the room They say a change is as good as a holiday, so why not rearrange some of your furniture? You may stumble across a way to make the room work even better than it already does. Plus rearranging can give the impression that you have a new piece of furniture, when it’s actually just the same piece in a different location.

A window to improving energy efficiency in your home

A

s with many things that effect the energy efficiency of our homes, a lot of it has to do with common sense. How did our predecessors cope with these problems before air conditioners or even electricity? While a lot of this came down to design, much of it was due to the materials available and how they used them. For example, they saw cypress pine was termite-resistant so used it to build the frames of their homes. They also hewed sandstone into blocks for their walls, creating thermal mass which helped keep their homes warm in winter and cooler in summer. Over the last 10 years we have seen many developments in building materials. Some have had a very positive effect on improving the energy efficiency of our homes, some not. It has been the advancement of the innovative design and application of one of our home’s most common elements — windows — that has had the greatest impact on energy efficiency after insulation. It started with the invention of Smart Glass. This is not to be mistaken with tinted glass, which does have some applications in certain areas of the home, but not in every window as some would have you believe. Windows are notoriously the weakest link in wall insulation, but the likes of Viridian Smart Glass and

Bradnam’s Solar Comfort have been designed to deflect up to 39 per cent of winter heat loss back into your home and block solar heat from getting in, reducing internal heat gain in summer and thus reducing power usage year round. Double-glazed and thermal break windows have been available down south for a long time, so economically unviable for us here in Queensland, but will be available in Geoff Gibson Homes in the near future, with Bradnam’s Windows and Doors announcing a new manufacturing facility here in Toowoomba. The Bradnam’s system will improve your glazing even further by hermetically sealing heat-blocking argon gas in the gap and putting a reinforced polyamide extrusion in the window frame, creating the energy-saving thermal break. Using doubled-glazed windows alone can reduce your energy costs by as much as 23% while using thermal break windows can reduce those costs by as much as 27%. With improvements in materials on this magnitude, energy efficient homes are becoming more accessible to everyone.

Why we love Marigolds Marigolds are a spiritual flower throughout the world, and they also make beautiful bunches in pots and vases. But did you know marigolds provide effective pest control in your garden? They are also colourful, nutritious additions to your table.

MARIGOLDS AS COMPANION PLANTS

Marigolds should be planted as a companion plant to enhance the growth of basil, broccoli, cabbage, cucumbers, eggplant, gourds, kale, melons, potatoes, squash and tomatoes.

MARIGOLDS AS PEST CONTROL

Marigolds have traditionally been used as borders to protect flower beds and vegetable gardens.

Scented varieties of marigold will deter beetles, beet leaf hoppers, Mexican bean beetle and nematodes. Their roots also protect the soil for months. Choose old-fashioned varieties over newer hybrids.

EDIBLE MARIGOLDS

Marigold petals are edible and contain carotene, which can be converted to vitamin A. Don’t eat them by the bucket, but do sprinkle petals on salads and add to bread and cake mixes to give an extra golden touch and pungent fragrance. Some signet marigolds have a citrus flavour.

Keeping it green Winter can always be a difficult season to get through — the days are short and the weather can be bleak. It can be hard to keep a lot of plants alive, and a lot of the time, you don’t want to be outside watering plants and tending to a garden in the cold winter weather! But there is something you can do to overcome the dreariness — dress-up your home with some gorgeous interior greenery. A great choice is a fern, or a few ferns; they add a lovely soft texture to any area. Maintenance is straight forward — trim stray fronds, remove any brown bits — they are best placed in indirect light and need to be watered whenever the top of the soil is dry to touch. Succulents are great options — they are like mini sculptures with many different shapes and textures. They are easy to care for, they need direct light, well draining soil that can easily dry between watering. These are also great for children for these ease of care. You can find so many beautiful varieties, even at local farmers’ markets. Look into what suits your family and grab some for winter.

ON THE BIG SCREEN

THE BIG SICK

THE BIG SICK OPENS NATIONALLY ON AUGUST 3

Based on the real-life courtship between Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon, the film tells the story of the Pakistan-born aspiring comedian (Kumail as himself) and grad student Emily (Zoe Kazan). Kumail and Emily, his real-life wife, wrote the screenplay for The Big Sick, one reason it feels so authentic. What starts as a casual courtship – with Emily telling comedian/Uber driver Kumail they ‘can’t keep doing this’ before immediately pashing him – turns into a lovely relationship. But unbeknownst to Emily, Kumail still indulges his traditional Pakistani parents in regular dinners where prospective wives turn up to meet him in what his mum hopes will lead to his marriage to ‘a good Muslim girl’. How Kumail navigates the cultural differences between his Pakistani heritage and his life in Chicago could be a movie in itself, but this is just the jumping off point for The Big Sick’s real drama. The Big Sick is refreshing and original. Book it in for your next date night.

A GREAT WINTER READ WORKING CLASS BOY BY JIMMY BARNES

BY DEBBIE PHILLIPS

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to sit down one on one with a rock icon such as Jimmy Barnes? Stop guessing, because the answer is easy: just pick up Working Class Boy. He grew up tough. From the streets of Glasgow there emerged a culture of heavy drinking and tough street games, forging his hard exterior from an early age. James Dixon Swan and his family immigrated to Australia thinking they were leaving behind the hard, dirty grime of the streets that stank of savagery and alcohol-fuelled violence. In the suburb of Elizabeth in the early 1960s, it was a time when street cred, girls and violence fuelled the lives of young men across Australia. Open and honest about his brutal, violent past, Barnes proves himself a true storyteller. There are times you will laugh out loud at his honesty, then shake your head, wondering how he ever made it to adulthood to become one of the most prestigious names in our rock history. Working Class Boy has delivered one of the most powerful memoirs I have enjoyed, and while it doesn’t quite fill you in on the Chisel years, as Jimmy says, that story is still being written – and I, for one, cannot wait.

Style Artist Celestine Stokes chats to Style Tell us a little about yourself. I grew up in country Queensland and love nature, but moved to the city to work in the business world. After many years in the city, I grew tired of corporate life and wanted our two children to grow up in the country. My husband Mark and I decided on a tree change and moved to the Lockyer Valley. I have worked as an artist for the past six years from our beautiful, 100 year old cottage that we have been renovating. I also have a business called Tailoring Your Success where I am a personal stylist, business coach, voice coach and speech and drama teacher. I am currently studying part time to become a high school English and Business, Communications and Technology teacher, which I will finish mid next year.

Describe your style? My style is whimsical with mixed media. What inspires you? I am inspired by my children, nursery rhymes and fairy tales. When did you start painting? I started drawing at a very young age. I am dyslexic and had difficulty putting my thoughts into words. I had trouble with school in the younger grades and would just sit and draw and write poetry instead of participating. Though I caught up and went on to study at university, I still like to escape into my dream world whenever I can. How has it evolved and what has influenced this? I always loved Strawberry Shortcake and Holly Hobbie. I liked to paint and draw pictures of people with big heads and big eyes and stick things

onto my drawings and make them three dimensional. As an adult I found styles and names for what I did which made me realise that there are other people out there that understand my work. Why do you enjoy painting? I love escaping into the dream world of my paintings. It is a very happy place to be. What are some of the highlights/ favourite moments/greatest achievements of your artistic life? I love the Grammar Art Show it is one of my favourite nights of the year. I am very fortunate to have sold many paintings over the last six years. It gives me a legitimate excuse to drift into my dream world, sail away and call it work. I also love to see other people smile at my work and happily escape into a fantasy land for a brief minute.

Immersed in the sun BY MEGHAN BRYANT THE CHRONICLE

EXPLORE ALL THE SUN, CULTURE AND BEAUTY IN BALI ranging from Greek and Indonesian to Australian. But it isn’t just the food to get excited about, it’s the incredible venues with ocean views. Sitting beach side, relaxing on a day bed with a drink in hand is what Seminyak is all about. With so many restaurants and bars to choose from, there is no way you can cover them all. Perhaps the most well-known and my personal favourite place to spend the day (and night) is Potato Head Beach Club. The club walls are made up of mismatched 18th century window shutters collected from across the Indonesian archipelago, giving it an edge from the moment you enter. As soon as you step inside the beach

club, the site is enough to take your breath away. It opens onto a sandy beach, and the beachfront bar and 500-square meter lawn leads to an infinity pool with a swim-up bar — all housed inside an incredibly designed open amphitheatre. Once inside, my husband and I try and order a day bed, where we will have our own personal waiter, making us feel like royalty. Alas, there is a two-hour wait. Everyone wants to be treated like a king and queen. But no matter, we spend the next two hours in the beach bar, sitting in the sand and splashing around in the pool. When it is our turn to make use of the day bed, I immediately order the club’s specialty cocktail and some tapas and begin reading.

Bali is immersed in sun, culture and breathtaking beauty — making it the perfect tropical paradise. While Kuta is known for being the island’s most popular high-voltage tourist destination, holiday-makers can treat themselves to a relaxing few days in Seminyak. Visiting the island for the second time with my husband in June, it was very different to our first experience. Being there the first time in 2012, the third-world country seemed very overwhelming and we weren’t sure where to start — but this time we were prepared. Our goal was to spend the week eating, drinking cocktails and relaxing. We spent a majority of our time along Seminyak’s most influential dining strip with cuisines from around the world,

Who’s behind Create W

FOUNDER LEANNE SHARES HOW CREATE WAS BORN

hen Leanne McDonald founded Create Financial Solutions in 2009, she was already ahead of the pack when it came to managing money and investments. She had been involved in the Financial Services Industry since 1989, and as a financial planner since 1996. She had held several National Awards at Suncorp and CBA Bank. She bought her first shares at the age of 20 and her first house at 22. Even as a young high school kid, she manned and helped out with the family farm business in country Queensland. The local grown practice that started out with one staff member in 2009 has grown from strength to strength, to 16 staff employed across the business consisting of four experienced financial advisers, two mortgage brokers and 10 administration customer service staff. Create offers many different options and services for busy people to make the financial process simple. Leanne’s success, enthusiasm and drive has attracted people to Create via both referrals from delighted clients and

also via their community involvement in various charities and functions around Toowoomba. Being driven and positive about what you can achieve and share with others is central to Leanne’s working practice. Leanne gets great motivation from motivating others, and coming up with strategies for them to achieve success. “I am a passionate person and I enjoy discussing my successes, and how to manage and integrate a work/ life balance, it’s important to keep energy levels up to continue to motivate and inspire others,” she said. She has various professional designations in her field: Certified Financial Planner (CFP), ASX Listed Securities Certificate, Self-Managed Super Fund Specialist Adviser certification, and Queensland Collaborative Law. In 2012, Leanne was named the number one Female Adviser of the Year by Morningstar Magazine, and number 12 overall in Australia. Her proudest achievement is being a mother of three children.

The upside of divorce BY KARA BEST LEGAL PRACTICE DIRECTOR AND ACCREDITED FAMILY LAW SPECIALIST

T

here is no quicker way to bring about a passion-filled response than to indicate you’re a divorce lawyer at a dinner party or in a cab. The response is natural in the sense that divorce is such an intense and momentous experience for those that endure such upheaval. I also fully acknowledge that it takes a unique personality to aspire to work with people going through such a difficult period. “It must be so emotional?” and “how do you cope?” — compassionate questions, but misguided in the sense that the work we do requires a genuine level of objectivity and emotional detachment. Becoming emotionally intertwined with a client and their concerns, offers little benefit. Certainly, you can care and be deeply invested in the outcome, but that needs to be distinguished from acting out of

your own emotional response when advising a client. So why have I personally been drawn to this work? I genuinely crave the opportunity to have deep and meaningful relationships with my clients. I love that many of them remain my good friends, and I love that I am, at least partly, responsible for helping them move positively through a really awful period in their lives. I love knowing that I’ve empowered a client and helped them advocate against an outcome that would be unfair. I love knowing that I can actively promote outcomes that work for vulnerable kids. I love working with like-minded professionals. Family lawyers, are without doubt, the most interesting lawyers I know (apologies to the rest of the profession). You need an exceptional capacity to

communicate, emotional insight, personal discipline, pragmatism, the capacity to advocate persuasively — being a good family lawyer is exceptionally demanding and there is great satisfaction in working under that pressure but also seeing my colleagues achieve what they do.

As a parent, you can’t be with your child every minute. However, their teacher should have an understanding of their progress or perhaps even why they’re struggling. Check their schoolbooks: If you browse your child’s books, it might show the problem. When you identify the issue, you’ll be able to work through it.

ENSURE POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT

This situation might make your child sad and inept. Make sure they understand that they’re still capable of achieving things through praising their strengths.

Importance of reading We’ve all been taught from a young age how important it is to read. But with so many children growing up with technology, it is more important than ever to encourage children to read books and develop a love for reading. Here are several reasons why it is important to read with your children, especially from ages two and up. Basic speech skills Throughout toddlerhood and preschool, your child is learning critical language and enunciation skills. By listening to you read One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, for example, your child is reinforcing the basic

sounds that form language. Pretend reading — when a toddler pages through a book with squeals and jabbers of delight — is a very important pre-literacy activity. As a preschooler, your child may begin sounding out words on his/her own. The knowledge that reading is fun Early reading for toddlers helps them view books as an indulgence, not a chore. Kids who are exposed to reading are much more likely to choose books over video games, television and other forms of entertainment as they grow older. Books have the power to benefit

toddlers and preschoolers in a myriad of ways. As a parent, reading to your child is one of the most important things you can do to prepare them with a foundation for academic excellence. More logical thinking skills Another illustration of the importance of reading to children is their ability to grasp abstract concepts, apply logic in various scenarios, recognise cause and effect and utilise good judgment. As your toddler or preschooler begins to relate the scenarios in books to what’s happening in his own world, he/she will become more excited about the stories you share. The basics of how to read a book Children aren’t born with the knowledge that text is read from left to right or that the words on a page are separate from the images. Essential pre-reading skills like these are among the major benefits of early reading. Academic excellence One of the primary benefits of reading to toddlers and preschoolers is a higher aptitude for learning in general. Numerous studies have shown that students who are exposed to reading before preschool are more likely to do well in all facets of formal education. After all, if a student struggles to put together words and sentences, how can they be expected to grasp the maths, science and social concepts they’ll be presented with when they begin primary school? Better communication skills When you spend time reading to toddlers, they’ll be much more likely to express themselves and relate to others in a healthy way. By witnessing the interactions between the characters in the books you read, as well as the contact with you during story time, your child is gaining valuable communication skills.

CREAMY GARLIC PRAWNS

Plump sweet young prawns that have been marinated in garlic and paired with a creamy sauce — what more could you want? The prawns, cooked to perfection, were coated with a deliciously smooth chardonnay cream sauce. Together with the steamed jasmine rice, the dish had an almost risotto-like richness.

TWICE COOKED PORK BELLY

Not one to pass up the opportunity to try a good pork belly, this one certainly hit the spot. The pork had an almost smoky flavour, with a deliciously crispy and salty crackle that accentuated the dish perfectly. The al dente seasonal vegetables were accompanied by roast potato and herb smash.

STICKY DATE AND CHOCOLATE SLICE

A modern twist on the traditional chocolate slice, this dish more than satisfies any chocolate cravings. The rich and decadent chocolate was balanced perfectly with the almost caramel-like flavour of the dates. Paired with a serving of warm mixed berries and ice cream.

SCORPIO

IT’S IN THE STARS LEO

July 24th — Aug 23rd Well, August is the month where you choose your destiny Leo — whether it is keeping ahead of the pack or realising just how powerful you can be. You may emerge from your hibernation feeling a little shabby, however you will soon shake off the winter blues.

VIRGO

Aug 24th — Sept 24th If you have caught the dreaded travel bug be prepared to get that passport photo retouched. Take time out to drive for your goals and achieve them. Think pretty florals as you search and sail across the sea to a tropical island. There could be a golden tanned man ready with cocktail in hand.

LIBRA

Sept 24th — Oct 23rd This is the month not to tip the scales to one side — you need to think about what is important for your own peace of mind. Whether it is to be the first woman to walk on Mars or simply fly through the air with the greatest of ease, pop that champagne cork and make your dreams a reality.

66 | August 2017

Oct 24th — Nov 22nd Is there a secret that you are not revealing to the world just yet? It may have to do with an increase in income or family. Can I hear the patter of little feet running around or is it just your heart fluttering with excitement? If spending up big remember to save a little to spoil yourself.

SAGITTARIUS

Nov 23rd — Dec 21st Your star is shining so bright it is positively blinding! Everyone wants to be around you this month so if you are feeling a tad overcome, be thankful it is all good vibes and no bad karma. August is a month to kick back, take your shoes off and enjoy feeling the warm sand between your toes.

CAPRICORN

Dec 22nd — Jan 20th If you are looking for some excitement maybe try abseiling as goats are sure-footed, especially on rocky slopes. When you have reached the highest peaks, be careful — someone could be plotting your downfall. Remain calm, as all will be revealed. Despite the fireworks, it will all go in your favour.

AQUARIUS

Jan 21st — Feb 19th You have moved on from any previous bad experiences, and you will feel more settled in your new role back on familiar turf. Friends and family will gather together to welcome your triumphant return, so get your dancing shoes on and hit the dance floor — busting a move will do wonders.

PISCES

Feb 20th — Mar 20th Little fish swimming in the warmer waters, you will be able to handle any problems this month with a swish of your

fishy tail. You will be spending August blowing bubbles and taking in the sights of your fish tank, but no one will make you do anything that you don’t want to.

ARIES

Mar 21st — Apr 20th Oh, my goodness, when you decide to go big you do it with style! You may be moving in elite circles this month. When mingling, you will be the talk of the town — with your scintillating conversation, the room will be yours.

TAURUS

Apr 21st — May 21st Warning clumsy alert! Take care this month: you may feel the urge to challenge yourself physically, but it could prove to be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. There will be nothing serious, however, watch out for slippery floors and dashing moves. You won’t need time off unless it is with the hunky stranger who picks you up off the floor.

GEMINI

May 22nd — June 22nd If you must take time out, then perhaps plan a party with games and fun. We know you like to solve the puzzles. Just remember the harder the puzzle, the more satisfying the outcome. If balancing work and home, then put a project on the back burner so you don’t exhaust yourself.

CANCER

June 23rd — July 23rd Well, another birthday has gone — do you feel older and wiser? I think so; your days have been so busy it is now time to stop, take a deep breath and relax. August is the month of change for you, but in a great way, so if you would like to start a new fitness campaign, new job or simply move into better digs then August is the month.
