When times are tough, TASC is here to help IT CAN be hard to open up to someone after your trust has been betrayed, particularly by a loved one, but local community legal centre TASC is here to help. With offices in Toowoomba, Ipswich and Roma, TASC offers legal and social work services for free to seniors (60+ or 50+ for Indigenous people). Especially now, as the pandemic means more isolation and lockdowns, people can be more at-risk of abuse and being taken advantage of. TASC Social Justice Services manager Terri-Ann Dwyer explains their mission is to defend the rights of seniors and other people. “We help seniors who are experiencing domestic and family violence, being exploited, or experiencing abuse, including financial mistreatment,” Terri-Ann said. TASC sees people who are being treated badly; not just physical abuse but with problems like being unable to recover loans from family members, or not being able to see their grandchildren. Most often for seniors, these issues come up with people who are supposed to love and care for them, so it can be

Seniors Legal and Support Service

Abuse and being taken advantage of financially is not OK.

Breaking down barriers FOR more than 35 years Turner Freeman Lawyers has represented thousands of victims of asbestos disease in Queensland and other States and Territories. Our vision at Turner Freeman is to break down the barriers that often discourage people from seeking appropriate legal representation. We aim to provide everyday people with not only legal help, but also the support and care that they need. We maintain a strong network of relationships with support and rehabilitative organisations to ensure ongoing positive results for our

clients. Generally, a person who is diagnosed with a serious asbestos disease will be entitled to lump sum compensation. This can be through a workers’ compensation claim or through a court action against employers and/or the manufacturers of the asbestos products used, such as James Hardie and Wunderlich. Time limits can apply to the making of claims for compensation for asbestos disease. Often urgent steps need to be taken to protect the legal interests of a person suffering from asbestos disease and their families.

Our initial consultation is always provided on an obligation free basis, meaning if the person does not have a claim for compensation or does not wish to pursue one, we would not seek to charge them, so there is nothing to be lost by investigating any potential claim for those suffering from asbestos disease. Of course, we are more than happy to meet with people at their home for their initial obligation free consultation if they live out of town or simply are unable to come to us. For more information or to book your consultation, call 4616 8333.

HAPPY HANDS: Residents at Oxford Crest have kept busy during lockdown by making fiddle blankets and quilts. Picture: Contributed

Oxford Crest residents keep busy to help others DURING lockdown from coronavirus, a group of Oxford Crest residents have kept busy knitting blankets, fiddle mats, and children’s clothing. The colourful works of art are being donated to a variety of charities including Dementia Australia, Woolly Warriors, and Foster Care. The fiddle mats are for sufferers of dementia or Alzheimer’s. The mats have lots of little

objects to keep troubled minds occupied. Different textures, different colours and embellishments keep sufferers relaxed and reduce anxiety, while giving them something to do with their hands. Some of our residents have family suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia and any little thing we can do to help those suffering this terrible disease is worthwhile.

Also, our residents have been knitting squares from donated wool and then sewing these squares together to make some amazingly colourful and warm blankets for the homeless. The ladies have all said they enjoyed these projects, and it has helped to keep them busy during a challenging time. They find a lot of pleasure in doing something that will benefit someone else; knowing that they are helping others is very rewarding. It is great that they can now get back together each week to work on this project and talk about other ideas. All of this has happened because of the co-ordination of Barbara Lacey, the hard work and dedication of Joyce Gillam, Toni Angell, Dorothy Bartholomew, Charm Powell, Jacquie Lyme, Fay Platz, Kaylene O’Hearn and Brian Delforce who donated 225 skeins of wool to the cause. Oxford Crest is an independent living village in Toowoomba that provides affordable, quality rental accommodation for seniors. We encourage our residents to take part in a variety of activities including Tai Chi, exercises, bingo, karaoke, indoor bowls, movie afternoons and, of course, arts and craft. A new project being undertaken is knitting pouches for orphaned Australian animals.

Following a period of teaching at the Griffith University, Nathaniel found his way to Toowoomba, where he met Nadia, his now wife and practice manager - and Denture Visage was born. At Denture Visage, Nathaniel uses his years of training and experience to expertly craft the dentures that you need. Time and time again, Nathaniel sees patients who have put up with ill fitting, poorly functioning and unattractive dentures, who believe it’s ‘just life’ with dentures. When made with care, attention, expertise and a wholefit approach, dentures can and should be beautiful, natural looking, and well fitting. Nathaniel takes the time to listen to his patients, to understand their past experiences and their dreams for their dentures, and from that, will make dentures that are made for living: dentures that fit well, look beautiful and function the way they should. Sixty and single – what now? BY TRACEY JOHNSTONE THE journey to my 60th birthday has been momentous with lots of good times mixed in with a fair share of the ordinary. Turning 40 was a time to celebrate a busy life and loads of great friends. Turning 50 brought on the fear of menopause. Sixty is turning into a time of reflection; some decisions need to be reached and unreached goals accepted. The most confronting decision is what will my life be like going forward. Single and childless – who will take care of me when I am older? My friends will be old with me. My siblings are both older than me by between five and nine years. If I marry again, my partner is likely to be old, like me. So, what do I do? With no solid answers at hand I turned to a few of my friends who are in similar circumstances to see if I could learn from their approaches to ageing.

Ian He’s lived in Thailand for about four years. Back in his old home-town of Sydney he only has an uncle left alive. “I will probably stay in Thailand and live day by day,” he said. “As long as I keep my health, I will have a good time. “I am doing more fitness training than I have ever done in my life”. Ian is determined to age at home. “If I am still in Thailand, I will still rent and hopefully I can find some old lady to do the shopping and cooking for me. “I’m not anti-euthanasia,” he added. “I am happy to pull the plug when I think it is ridiculous.”

Zealand and their children don’t talk to Deborah. Recently she bought a lowset townhouse in a small enclave, which she equates to living in a retirement village, so she could age at home for as long as possible. Without children Deborah doesn’t know what to do with the money she has worked hard to save. Checking into a private high-care facility, if necessary, is a feasible option she believes. “I smoke and drink, so it

I might cut back the hours, but between work and the club, that’s my life.” My friend’s comments are food for thought, but while they haven’t given me clarity on my future, they have bought me closer to wanting to live a happy, healthy and engaged path towards 70 and onwards.

Social isolation as we age increases the risk of numerous mental and physical health challenges. One big reason people become socially isolated is because of hearing loss. Often, as hearing becomes challenging, people avoid social, business or transactional situations where hearing interactions are key and instead choose to withdraw and isolate

Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries among the elderly, leading to significant health, social, economic, and emotional consequences. Falls often lead to fatal outcomes within the first 12 months of a fall with injury in the senior population. Hearing loss is one of several factors causing falls. Even a mild degree of hearing

Studies have shown that good circulation plays a role in maintaining good hearing health. Conversely, inadequate blood flow and trauma to the blood vessels of the inner ear can contribute to hearing loss. DIABETES

It’s known that high blood sugar can damage blood vessels throughout the body, including your ears. If you’ve had diabetes for a long time and it isn’t well controlled, there could be damage to the vast network of small blood vessels in your ears. Another complication of diabetes is nerve damage. Celebrating the Infinite superheroes this Aged Care Employee Day WITH so much focus on aged care this year due to COVID-19 targeting the aged, some may forget what this all means for our aged care workers. It means even more mental and physical energy is required each day, as emotional needs in residents are greater. It also means more TLC is required to help replace the visitation many are used to from their loved ones. Aged Care Employee Day was an initiative implemented in 2018; a day designed to celebrate all workers in aged care, from cleaners to accountants to nurses, and everyone in between. As an organisation, Infinite Care makes a big deal of Aged Care Employee Day. They hold celebrations at each facility, and in the weeks prior they ask staff and residents to nominate any from the team who they feel exemplify what aged care is all about – the people who consistently go above and beyond in their

roles, and continue to deliver excellence in their service and the support they deliver to their colleagues and residents. This year the Infinite theme was to ‘Celebrate the Infinite Superheroes’ and staff were encouraged to dress to this theme in bright, happy colours and superhero accessories, and to bring a fun attitude to brighten each other’s days. Hundreds of nominations poured in for staff and the comments were heartwarming. Each facility held events – pizza parties, morning or afternoon teas – and all enjoyed cakes sent from Head Office. These events were happy and festive with awards and badges awarded to those nominated as ‘Infinite Superheroes’. Congratulations to those very worthy recipients. The times we are currently experiencing really test what we are made of as humans, and witnessing the way the Infinite teams have pulled together so quickly and effectively during

Keeping track of Government payment scheme changes Discover what you’re eligible for and when WITH the many changes that have taken place in the Australian Federal Government over the last few years, it can be hard to keep up with where you stand in regards to entitlements. If you’re nearing retirement, it’s worth doing your research into the requirements you need to meet to receive the age pension, as well as what benefits you may be entitled to. The first thing you should know, for example, is that the eligibility age for the age pension is in the process of being increased from 65 years of age to 67 years, and is dependent on an income and assets test. Each six months, the age pension will increase until it reaches 67 on July 1, 2023. There will then be a two

year ‘freeze’ before gradually increasing the qualifying age to 70 by 2035. You will need to apply for the pension, with your income and assets impacting how much you will receive. If you’re continuing to work you can apply for a partial pension. However, if you’re wanting to retire, you might want to talk to a professional who can help you plan ahead to help make the transition smooth and as stress-free as possible.. The Australian Government has financial information service officers contactable via their phone line on 132 300 who can provide you with all the information you need to plan your future as a retired citizen.

SUCCESS READY: Gather all your information and seek advice before setting off for retirement and the pension.

Other benefits you might be entitled to depending on your circumstances include the

A word from the CEO: Breakaway Toowoomba continues to deliver vital services BREAKAWAY Toowoomba has been a leading disability support and respite service provider to Toowoomba and the Darling Downs for over 30 years. Despite the unprecedented events of 2020, Breakaway’s services have carried on and will continue to do so. We believe care and support for those most vulnerable

in our community is so important at the best of times and absolutely essential at the worst. At Breakaway we are choosing to view these multitude of challenges as opportunities to self-evaluate and to determine how we can make improvements to our organisation and the service we provide. We choose to see the posi-

tives and value our time even more with our clients and with each other. We have been given an opportunity to put even greater thought and care into our interactions and for that we are grateful. Despite the challenges this year has presented, we have still experienced rapid growth in our provision of Supported Independent Living (SIL) services, taken on a large number of new and highly skilled support staff, relaunched our incredibly popular Creative Living and Life Skills Group and even branched into Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) with a second facility due to open very soon. All this is on top of the services we provide at our state-ofthe-art respite facility on Bridge St, Toowoomba, and our longstanding community support services. Here at Breakaway Toowoomba, change has taught us that adaptation and development is the key to remaining strong within our industry and to keep pushing forward. We are stronger for our challenges and we are more grateful for these opportunities that arise than we ever thought possible. We still do not know what tomorrow will bring but we know that we can face it together. Thank you.

Quality Respite & Support Services for People Living with a Disability The team at Breakaway Toowoomba use our extensive knowledge, experience and resources to provide quality respite and individualised support services to people living with a disability. We have been working closely with individuals, families and carers for over 30 years to provide care and respite services that support and empower people with a disability to achieve their goals.

Specialist in-home care HOME Instead Senior Care is a specialist, national provider of in-home care for older Australians. Its ‘CAREGivers’ help with a range of personal and lifestyle needs while providing welcome companionship. Donna Weis moved from Brisbane to establish the Toowoomba office five years ago, after identifying a need for quality inhome care services in the Darling Downs region. “We have now expanded our services beyond Toowoomba as we noticed a demand for short notice, 24-hour care in the surrounding regions as there was no provider in these areas to provide after hours care,” Donna said. “This year, we also received Commonwealth Home Support funding for domestic assistance for the Darling Downs, and we now care for over 350 seniors in the community and employ 12 office members to support our team of ‘CAREGivers’.”

FRIDAY AUGUST 14 2020 THECHRONICLE.COM.AU

Learning yoga: not all fun and games MY hamstring was burning, my breathing was laboured and I was fighting a desperate desire to expel wind. My late-life introduction to yoga was definitely not proving the relaxing experience I’d been promised. To make it worse, I was surrounded by universally lithe yogis (definitely all smarter than this average bear!) effortlessly contorting their bodies as I simultaneously suffered in a world of pain. As I grappled with the challenge of sending my legs in opposite directions, the irritatingly calming voice of the instructor urged us all to breathe deeply through each stretch. While those around me comfortably inhaled and exhaled with long and soothing breaths, I was huffing and puff-

ing like a steam train negotiating a mountainous pass. And who knew such strength was required to survive a yoga class unscathed? Certainly not me. My quivering quads silently screamed a united protest each time I attempted an extended squat, and it became increasingly difficult to resist the urge to just stay prone on my mat until the session came to a merciful end. I know it’s not supposed to be about comparing yourself to others, but a furtive glance around me confirmed that this newbie had a long way to go. My more experienced classmates were all moving seamlessly through imitations of cows, cobras, cats and any number of other animals, while each pose I attempted more closely resembled a clumsy baby elephant. I thought I’d made a breakthrough when the instructor requested we all take up the

“Child’s Pose”, but apparently sitting with arms crossed, scowling, with your bottom lip drooped was not what she had in mind. This yoga baptism of fire could have left me literally bent and broken, but I’m proud to report that practice does make perfect (well not perfect, but at least better) and my perseverance is starting to pay off. I now know the difference between a Downward Dog and a Dagwood Dog (although in honesty still derive more pleasure from the battered/saucedrenched one), and have mastered some of the basic poses. I’ve even done some research and intend to add my own personal touch to classes with the introduction, as required, of an occasional sneaky Wind Relieving Pose (seriously, it’s a thing … Google it!). But let’s keep that our little secret. Namaste!

Remaining vigilant: don’t let breast cancer catch you out SALLY* is living a great life in retirement, volunteering for several community organisations and travelling whenever the budget and time permits. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in the left breast at 40, but has had a clean bill of health since then. In late July Sally and her GP were discussing what medications were needed for a forthcoming holiday when Sally casually mentioned she had been experiencing for a few months a pain in her upper right side. The 69-year-old also mentioned that her annual mammogram was due to be done in the next month, but with the departure date for the holiday imminent, she planned to wait until she was back home in another two months before getting the test. The GP decided that a check of the pain area was still worth doing right then. That breast examination led to the GP referring Sally to the breast clinic for an immediate mammogram. The test results revealed something suspicious in the images. A needle biopsy was done

on the day and sent off for further examination. That result revealed an invasive ductal carcinoma and malignant tumour. Within a week the breast surgeon was booked. If Sally had decided to wait until she returned from her “trip of a lifetime” holiday, the fast growing cancer could have

spread further. She has now had a right breast mastectomy and is going through three months of chemotherapy and 12 months of Herceptin. The Galapagos trip is on hold for now, but Sally says she is ready to rebook it for a future year. * Name has been changed.

Independent living with a safety net COMMUNITY has never been more important than the past few months, and the hardest times have brought out the best in residents at Drayton Villas Retirement Village in Toowoomba. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the close-knit group of retirees has been particularly resilient, staying positive and dealing with the various challenges as they arise. This has fostered a sense of togetherness and security, and residents are truly benefiting from living independently with a safety net for added peace of mind. Drayton Villas is renowned for its community spirit, which is very much a homage to times past when neighbours genuinely looked out for one another. Since the onset of the pandemic, there have been some extraordinary acts of kindness

and generosity by residents and staff alike. The Drayton Villas community has come up with a raft of creative ways to stay connected while maintaining social distancing. There’s no shortage of fun to be had, from a morning ‘Daily Wave’ in which residents greet the Village Manager in her golf buggy, to 1980s-inspired exercise routines, Tutu Tuesdays and Wacky Wednesday dress-ups. It’s these small gestures and sense of optimism that make all the difference when times are tough, and it’s why so many older Australians are looking for the safety net of village life. What’s more, the team at Drayton Villas is committed to looking after the health and wellbeing of residents and staff. As soon as the pandemic hit Australian shores, the team

and increased infection control. The team has also adapted the way in which they work to ensure new residents can safely attend sales appointments,

inspect properties, and move in; those who wish to take extra precautions can view a virtual property tour online. While no-one knows how long the pandemic will last,

St Vincent’s sets sights on next 100 years of caring for the Darling Downs The largest private hospital in the region is preparing to celebrate its centenary in 2022 A POWERFUL combination of skilled professionals, contemporary facilities, and an ethos of compassionate care are the foundations of how St Vincent’s Private Hospital Toowoomba continues to provide healthcare excellence to the people of the Darling Downs and beyond. St Vincent’s chief executive officer Kathryn McKeefry said the hospital is planning for the future. “It is paramount we identify opportunities to continue to provide contemporary healthcare services in line with the community’s needs and expectations,” she said. “Over the past three years the hospital has embarked on an infrastructure development program, together with an expansion in specialist medical services which equips us to continue to be a trusted place

to receive expert healthcare. “We are looking forward to the opening of our new emergency department, which is on track to open early November. “It will be a welcome addition to the $30 million Clive Berghofer Operating Theatre Suite, opened in January 2018, adding six new state-of-the-art operating theatres including a cutting-edge hybrid theatre, a new kitchen and entrance to the hospital. “Earlier this year a new, contemporary birth suite was opened to provide more options to mothers and their partners during labour.” Kathryn said the hospital is focused on providing a comprehensive medical approach for the ageing population of Toowoomba and surrounding regions. “Dedicated professionals offer services in emergency

care, gerontology, neurology, stroke, wound management, orthopaedic services, rehab, palliative care, cardiology and general surgery,” she said. “Our corporate values of compassion, justice, integrity and excellence are at the heart of all that we do.” Kathryn said these values have underpinned the hospital since its inception. “Mary Aikenhead, foundress of the Sisters of Charity religious order, took a leap of faith and the mission that she embarked upon is alive and well at St Vincent’s Private Hospital, Toowoomba, today. “From the beginning to the end of life, and all stages in between, we are a trusted healthcare provider that continues to make an indispensable contribution to the communities of the Darling Downs and southwest districts of Queensland.”

Enjoy healthy, beautiful skin at any age

HEALTHY SKIN: Looking after your skin as you age is paramount.

AS YOU age, it becomes more important than ever to look after your skin. Moisture and elasticity that you once enjoyed can begin to fade as you get older. The extra care given should be motivated not just by vanity, but also by concern for your health. Aged skin is thinner and more fragile, increasing the risk of injuries such as tearing and bruising. When the skin thins, its protective subcutaneous layer, which acts as protection, is lost. This can lead to increased damage from low impact interactions, which would previously not have damaged the skin at all. A good way to avoid this is to safety-proof your home by removing sharp objects and softening problem corners with cushions, foam or fabric. You should also keep in mind that ageing skin takes longer to bounce back from damage and healing time can be up to four times slower than young skin. It is important to remain vigilant with healing wounds and not become complacent over the hygiene and care of a wound.

Picture:

Infection can take place even in the smallest wounds and this compounds the healing time. To give your skin the best chance of health and longevity there are some simple steps which should be adhered to. The first is, of course, prevention. Cover up, apply sunscreen and make sure your diet is filled with good nutrients. Skin, like the rest of our body, is a living organism and needs nourishment. Adequate fluids and moisture are also important; drink water regularly and apply moisturiser as your skin becomes more susceptible to dryness as you age. Avoid perfumed soaps or body lotions as these will only dry out your skin. If you notice any irritation which could mean pressure sores, ulcers or split skin, see your doctor. If you have experienced continued skin breakages or wounds and are worried about infection, consult a doctor or occupational therapist. Fabric skin guards can be worn, as well as other medical apparatus designed to reduce injury or curb infection after injury.

Rural housing and ageing at home: report reveals A REPORT from leading community housing provider Horizon Housing last year shines a light on lack of provision of appropriate housing in rural areas, deeming it largely unable to meet the needs of our ageing population. The My Home, My Place Report, funded by the Queensland Department of Communities, Disability Services and Seniors, is the first of its kind to examine the housing needs of older people living in key rural communities. Focusing on the Maranoa region of Queensland, the report uncovered broader issues for exploration in rural towns across the country that face similar harsh environmental conditions and associated housing design challenges. The report found that over 65 per cent of rural residents live in detached homes or on more than five acres, exposing them to unique liveability challenges when compared to their metropolitan counterparts. Horizon Housing chief executive officer Jason Cubit said despite more than 96 per cent of participants intending to age in place, the regions were not currently equipped to allow them to do so. “For ageing Australians living in rural areas, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain a home in an environment where searing temperatures, drought and other

extreme factors are expected,” Mr Cubit said. “More than 64 per cent of our participants wanted modifications to their existing home to allow them to remain there safely as they age, yet 73 per cent are not seeking advice on how to do so,” he said. “We also found that over

half did not know how to arrange an assessment to access modifications to remain in their home. “A surprising and unexpected finding from this report was that 13 per cent of the older people we engaged with were a couple caring for a child/grandchild or grandchildren.

“This has significant implications for their future housing needs as they age.” Mr Cubit said the survey findings were vital as they paved the way for future nationwide research to address this important area and inform the development of future accommodation solutions for older people liv-

ing in rural and remote areas across the country. “Housing is an integral part of a person’s wellbeing. The concept of home is fundamental to a person’s identity and for older people, there is a sense of pride that comes with living independently,” he said. “The My Home, My Place

report reinforces the fact that older people living in our rural towns face unique challenges, yet most of the available programs and services focus on those in urban areas. “It’s critical that government and service providers work to address the issue of the housing needs of older people in these regions.”
