A new standard for automatic coffee machines, this Italian hand-crafted beauty is exclusive to Harvey Norman. With almost every element of your beverage configurable — from grind and milk volume to aroma and length — you’re ensured the idea coffee every time. As if this were not enough, you can even make a coffee via the Bluetooth link on your phone. Small appliances are a very popular Christmas gift, from the fabulous colours of kettles and toasters, to blenders, mixers and airfryers — like the Philips Smart XXL Airfryer. Page 6

Not only is this sleek and shiny machine gorgeous, but it creates a whole new level for what an airfryer can do — frying, baking, grilling, roasting, and reheating — with a massive 1.4kg capacity. Another popular genre for gifts is wellbeing and personal care. Air purifiers and diffusers remain a great option, with Dyson getting in on this trend with the new Dyson Pure Cool Me. The first Dyson personal purifier fan, its compact size is ideal for desks and bedside tables, while you can also control most functions via the stylish remote control. Electrical toothbrushes are also very popular right now, from models with air-flossing and app-capabilities available, to the latest kids’ model: the Philips Sonicare Electric Toothbrush for Kids. This toothbrush syncs with an app via Bluetooth, creating a fun experience where children brush the in-app character’s teeth by brushing their own. Not only does the cute character encourage kids to brush their teeth, but the app makes sure those pearly whites are being cleaned thoroughly and correctly. Massagers, foot spas, the Dyson Supersonic hairdryer, and all-in-one trimmers like the Philips OneBlade Pro, are also proving very popular for gifts. Sound systems and TVs are a great present for almost anyone, and Harvey Norman doesn’t fail to deliver in this department.

The majority of these devices now offer Google Home or Alexa built-in, such as the stylish Bose 700 soundbar and the LG ThinQ speaker. TVs are also constantly upgrading and modernising, with many models now offering Bluetooth connectivity, in-built ‘smart’ capability, and much better sound, as well as the revolusionary 8K. Visit Harvey Norman Electrical for all your Christmas needs at 910-932 Ruthven St, Toowoomba, to find the perfect gift for everyone.

Shop smarter this festive season Try these helpful money–saving tips to keep a handle on your spending

nyone who has ever over–spent on a Christmas gift will be familiar with ‘buyer’s remorse’. Here are some ways to prevent that this year:

Budget and planning

It may seem an obvious tip, but many people don’t really know how to budget effectively and, more importantly, many people don’t keep to their budgets once they reach the end of their available cash. Start by deciding on a total amount you’d be willing to spend on everything from gifts to drinks to wrapping paper and anything else Christmas–related. Then, make a list of the people you’d like to buy gifts for, as well as a list of groceries you’ll need for your Christmas feast and supplies for gift–wrapping. Finally, divide the available funds among these items and people; $50 on alcohol, $200 on mum’s gift, etc. How you divide your funds is up to you and will depend on what you feel needs to be prioritised above the other items on your lists.

chloe.com exclusive to Sankey Fraser

Be realistic with yourself here — it’s no use creating a low–cost budget if you’re going to over–spend the moment you hit the shops. Think about alternatives, like ditching the cocktails on your menu and settling for wine or beer instead (you’ll save a buck and a half this way).

Timing

Think about what you’ll need in advance and do as much of your shopping early–on; even as early as the Easter season, if necessary. Buying your gifts throughout the year will help you bargain hunt like a pro and will prevent you from rushing through the shops last minute.

Don’t buy yourself gifts

Resist the urge to treat yourself while out shopping for loved ones; wait until after the new year, when you’ll be better able to afford it. Who knows; someone might buy it for you anyway.

Watermelon slushies, anyone? Christmas in the southern hemisphere means having fruity drinks

ith watermelon being available in abundance over the summer months, it makes sense to incorporate this fruit’s juicy sweetness into your Christmas parties for a great non–alcoholic cocktail option:

What you’ll need:

■ 3kg watermelon ■ 125g fresh raspberries ■ 1 tablespoon caster sugar ■ 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste ■ 1 Litre soda water ■ Edible flowers (optional)

How you make it:

Step 1 Remove rind, chop in rough pieces, and blend until smooth, setting some pieces aside for garnish. Strain blended mixture into jug, discarding pulp. Reserve 500ml juice and place in the fridge to chill,

while freezing remainder of the juice into ice cubes. Step 2 Blend the raspberries, sugar and vanilla bean paste until smooth, then strain the mixture into a bowl and discard pulp. Step 3 Break the frozen watermelon juice cubes into smaller pieces and chop coarsely, then place the watermelon ice and chilled juice into the blender and blend until smooth. Step 4 Divide the raspberry puree among four large serving glasses and top with watermelon mixture and soda water. Decorate drinks with reserved watermelon pieces, or even edible flowers, if you like. — Recipe adjusted from taste.com.au

‘Tis the season to save big at Harvey Norman

arvey Norman’s furniture section will not be outdone, with an incredible range of Christmas specials on offer this year. “The time leading up to Christmas is the best time of year for shopping,” proprietor Mark Cassidy said. Due to Harvey Norman’s large buying power, they have great relationships with their suppliers and can pass on discounts to their customers around Christmas time. Harvey Norman is also one of the biggest suppliers of Australian–made furniture, which means most of it is customisable. Customers have the option of five to six stains, plus thousands of fabrics to choose from.

Mark recommends the Cobar range for couples looking to furnish their first place together. With it’s rustic wood finish and trending black fittings, it is a beautiful range and can be picked up for a reasonable price. Harvey Norman is constantly updating their stock to ensure they hold the furniture most loved by their local customers. “We’re always changing our range as different trends arise and some of the ranges we have here, have been popular for a while,” Mark said. The furniture section is about so much more than couches and dining sets, though. Harvey Norman has a large selection of barbecues

and smokers in all shapes and sizes, any of which will make the perfect Christmas gift for those meat lovers in your life. “We also do lift chairs, which make great gifts if you have elderly parents,” Mark said. You definitely don’t want to miss out on the massive savings to be had this time of year. “If you’ve been waiting to buy, this is the perfect time,” Mark said. As an added bonus to the fantastic product quality and give–away pricing offered by Harvey Norman, you can also take advantage of their delivery and assembly services, so you can relax and enjoy Christmas the right way. A magical white Christmas

Pre–schoolers

You don’t need to stick to the stereotypical dolls for girls and cars for boys routine, but this is the age at which children start telling you what they’d like for Christmas, so take their wishes into account.

Primary schoolers up to 10 years old

There are plenty of video games out there specifically tailored to young children, so don’t overlook this option. But, other options include cricket bats, skateboards or bicycles for the more actively inclined children.

Tweens

Something for the kids Newborns and toddlers under three years old

Educational toys are always a safe bet with this age group, as they soak up information like sponges and aren’t too picky when it comes to gifts. From rattles to puzzles and everything in between, the possibilities are endless here.

Teens

Children between 16 and 18 years old think of themselves as adults and want to be taken seriously. Perhaps spoil the teen in your life with a shopping spree or clothing voucher, or buy them a fun experience (like quad biking on some sand dunes) instead.

hether you will be buying a gift for your own children, or for your nephews and nieces, you will do well to know what’s in vogue this season. This will of course depend on the age of the child and the appropriateness of the gift, but here are some good gift ideas for children this year:

✁

From the age of 10 onwards, most children become a little more self–aware and might seem to change overnight, but will still respond to ‘the perfect gift’. This might include a musical instrument or a subscription to a music streaming service, or might be something as simple as a new pair of sunglasses.

Convert to a smart home at Harvey Norman Computers C

onnecting with your home has become more popular and more beneficial than ever before and Harvey Norman Computers is ready to provide you with everything you need. “With connected homes, everything is at your fingertips,” said proprietor Gus Romero. You can now actually talk to your devices, because they are voice–activated, or you can control them through an app on your smart phone. “Of the three largest voice assistant platforms — Google, Amazon and Apple — Google Home is by far the best option this Christmas,” Gus said. “Google Home is the most open–sourced and most comprehensive voice assistant, because it likes to work with everything,” said store manager Paul Howell, adding that Apple will work seamlessly and integrate with your other Apple products, whereas Google will play well with your smart technology. Using a voice assistant like Google Home, has many benefits. You can tell it to change the channel on the TV while your hands are full, you can tell it to turn the lights on or off, to change the temperature in one room or many, and even to open the curtains. For people with mobility issues, being able to activate aspects of your home with your voice only, can be life–changing. Page 22

Imagine telling your home to call an ambulance if you’ve collapsed and can’t get up. Imagine being able to answer the doorbell from halfway across the world. All these things and much more are possible with the smart home products available at Harvey Norman. For the security conscious, Trend Micro solves any problems you might foresee with privacy and online security. “The Trend Network Security box protects your wireless network by filtering and encrypting the network. “It’s probably the best product of its kind on the market at the moment,” said Paul. As with any smart device and security service, you have full control over everything the device has access to and who can access it. Apart from voice assistants, Harvey Norman Computers also stocks a great range of other items required to fully automate your home, like smart light bulbs, weather systems, and power points like the Connect Smart WiFi Plug. “You plug a power point in and it effectively controls whatever device you’re plugging into it,” said Paul. He explained that you’d use power points like the Connect to effectively control your other devices, like your TV. Once the TV is plugged into the Connect, you can tell

Google Home to turn on the TV and it will turn on the power to the TV. To further connect you and your home, Harvey Norman also stocks smart displays, like the JBL Link View. It is a hands–free display and speaker which runs on Google Assistant and allows you to do everything from making video calls to calling up your favourite recipes — it will even pause and wait for you to complete one step before moving on to the next! Gus is very excited for Christmas and can’t wait to show off Harvey Norman’s great interactive displays, especially in the smart home section. He said their stock–hold has tripled for Christmas, to ensure you find what you need, and they have nearly doubled their staff too. “It will be a smart home Christmas, there is no doubt about it,” he said and added that the Harvey Norman staff are ready and able to see to all your needs. “They’re the most knowledgeable in town, and they’re ready to explain technology in a simple way,” Gus said. If you need help setting up your new smart home, Harvey Norman has a Tech–2–Home service that can set everything up as you like it. If you’re not shopping, you can still drop in and have a look at all the new and exciting technology on offer, or bring the kids for a free photo with Santa.

he highly experienced and dedicated staff at Harvey Norman can look after all your bedding–related needs. “Our team is highly trained in fitting mattresses and pillows to individuals and finding happy mediums for couples. “With over 100 years’ collective experience amongst the team, we really are the experts in the industry,” said proprietor Russel Sherman. “We truly focus on offering our customers a good night’s sleep and not just selling products,” he added. According to Russel, Harvey Norman Bedding Toowoomba is the largest and most respected bedding retailer in the city. “Being locally owned and operated in Toowoomba for over 25 years, Harvey Norman has always supported the community and takes pride in customer focus,” he said. What better gift to give a loved one than a good night’s sleep?,” he said. While you’re at it, why not give yourself the gift of a bedroom make–over? Harvey Norman has the latest bedroom accessories, prints, bed frames, styles, and fabrics. Trending at the moment, are bright colours and contemporary florals, pastels, and bright tonal colours. You can really customise your perfect bedroom, with thousands of fabric choices, timber stains, configurations

The grandest of gift ideas Try these gift ideas to make your Pop and Nan’s Christmas a special one

aving your grandparents around for Christmas is a blessing in itself and should be celebrated. It can sometimes be really hard to buy something for a person who has seen and done it all. In the past, grandparents would be a little out of practice when it came to technology, making it hard to buy them gadgets of any kind — from a foot massager to a new computer. This is not necessarily the case anymore and age doesn’t have to be a barrier to tech–savvy gifts. With the world getting smaller and families spread across the globe, grandparents are eager for a way to connect with grandchildren who live far from them. A smart phone or a tablet is no longer so hard to understand and operate, and most grandparents nowadays have learned to use them. It might even be as simple as installing Skype (or a similar program) on their home computer and showing them how to use it.

Massage equipment is another gift you might want to consider to make their lives easier. Then, there are also the traditional gifts like a new photo album, bath soaps, or a new pair of slippers. Tried and tested, they are presents your grandparents will appreciate and treasure. Depending on their mobility, you can treat your grandparents to a day on the town. Take them shopping and pamper them, have lunch at their favourite café and ask them about their day. If mobility is an issue, you can cook for them and clean for them, offer to re–organise their cupboards for them if necessary, or just rent a couple of films, pop some popcorn, and have a sleep–over. For the younger and young–at–heart grandparents, you might consider something a bit more adventurous, like scuba diving, hot air ballooning, or even sky diving. Whatever you get your Pop and Nan this Christmas, will be an instant hit, guaranteed.

The mother of all gifts Treat your mum to something unforgettable this year

xpressing just how much your mother means to you is impossible, but that doesn’t mean you can’t try. Instead of buying your mum a bouquet of flowers or a new set of kitchen cloths, why not treat her to something she’ll enjoy instead?

Make the day about her

Organise a whole day of pampering activities and lunches with your mum; whether you are a man or woman, having some one–on–one time with your mother will mean the world to her, so go get that facial. Spend the day chatting about anything and everything, have lunch at her favourite café and take lots of photos. If your mum has difficulty with mobility, bring the pampering to her — there are plenty of beauty therapists who provide in–home services, as well as private catering companies around town. If all else fails, buy take–out from her favourite eatery, set the table yourself and offer your mum a manicure or

pedicure to show her how much she means to you. These moments will last forever; much longer than the lifespan of your average flower.

Make the gift together

Why not book a crafting class together and make something unique for Christmas? Learn how to do paper mâché and create a lovely photo collage on your mum’s old tea tray. Or, book a pottery class and learn to make a vase for the flowers you’ll get your mum on the way home. There are other, more ‘out–there’ gift ideas too, like making a diamond from your hair. Man–made diamonds (like earth–mined diamonds) are made from carbon and, in recent years, advances in the production process have made them identical to diamonds mined from the ground. All you’ll need for this unique gift idea, is about two grams of your hair and the money to pay for it.

Treat yourself this year W

hoever said you can’t buy your own gift, obviously never received a bad one before. Besides, who would know better what you really want this year, than you? It might not be quite such a dramatic scenario as bad gifts or being alone on Christmas day that leads you to

treating yourself a little. Whether you are in a relationship or single, young or old, male or female, there is a lot to be said for a little retail therapy. You can spend a couple of dollars on a facial or full body massage, or you can buy that new electric mower

you’ve been eyeing. At the end of the year, with months of hectic work days behind you and a busy Christmas and New Year’s period ahead of you, it’s easy to feel drained and in need of a pick–me–up. For that reason, your gift to yourself can be whatever you feel will put a smile on your face — anything from a physical gift, to a mental recharge. For some, buying a book or two would be the best gift they can give themselves. For others, just spending a day relaxing at a nice location can work wonders. Buying your own Christmas present is also a great way to force yourself to save for something you really want throughout the year — like a new car, or a fancy dress — instead of swiping the credit card or taking out a massive loan as soon as you first realise you want this thing. Postponing your own gift to Christmas time, will mean you don’t overspend and you appreciate it even more, thanks to the effort you put in and the time you waited. It’s also good for a bit of a laugh (why not exclaim something like “oh, guys, you shouldn’t have” when you open it and see your family roll their eyes at you). Make sure you get what you need this year (even if it means being a little self–absorbed) and enjoy every moment with your friends and family.

Kev Morris Builders would like to thank all of our clients, suppliers & contractors for your support throughout 2019! Have a Happy and Safe Christmas and we look forward to working with you in the New Year.

For your significant other C

elebrating Christmas with your partner is a great way to spend the holidays, but it can become a bit complicated when families get involved. Whether you and your partner alternate between spending Christmas first with their parents, then with yours, or whether you squash both families into one

weekend, is up to you. But, somewhere in all this chaos, you two need to make time for yourselves too. If the pressures of spending a ‘family Christmas’ together get too much, why not opt for a romantic getaway this year?

You might even want to start a new ‘roster’, spending every third Christmas away from the family. Time and attention is the best gift you can give your significant other, after all, and your families will be fine without you (promise). But, that doesn’t mean a gift–wrapped box of something special won’t be a welcome sight on Christmas day. You know your partner better than anyone else, but choosing a gift might still be a hard task (especially if your partner is not great at dropping hints). If you can’t guess what they want, there’s no harm in asking — that way, you’ll know they’ll love the gift. The tried and tested gifts like new earrings, a great new tie or pair of socks, perhaps even a new car, are all staples of couples gift–giving. If you’re thinking of buying something a little more intimate, it’s best to also buy something small for the Christmas tree (leaving the intimate gift for later, when you and your partner are alone). Other great gift ideas are golf days, fishing charters, pamper days at the spa, or nights spent under the stars. Why not take a cooking class together? That way, you can wine and dine your families at one big combined Christmas Day feast and show off your new couple’s skills in the process.

it the great outdoors this Christmas holiday period with a dirt bike, go–kart or quad from Odes Superstore. The family–run business has been servicing the region for the past eight and a half years from their Anzac Avenue store — and has quickly become the ‘go–to’ destination for all your riding needs. Tahnee and Tony Coombes and John Lloyd live and breathe all things mechanical, and their knowledge and expertise will help you make the right selection (for the best price) every time. “Riding is a great sport for kids,” Tahnee said. “It’s healthy and fun and it gets them off their electronic devices and outside,” she said. “It’s a chance to get out in the fresh air and experience the world around them. “Usually, mum and dad are involved in riding as well, so it’s an opportunity to share some enjoyable family time together.” And, if you are contemplating getting your children a trail bike or quad for Christmas, Tahnee says it’s vitally important to safeguard their wellbeing. “Safety is something we take very seriously, and we know parents do too — so, we stock a full range of

protective gear and accessories to ensure you’re protected at all times,” she said. Renowned for their attentive and knowledgeable service, the team at Odes Superstore consider their customers part of the family. “We have a great repeat customer base,” Tahnee said. “That’s why we always maintain a wide range of bikes and quads, as well as go–karts, because we want to provide a great selection for our customers at our best price points. “That way, they know they are getting quality gear at a very competitive price. “We have a strong racing community, as well as social riders, and we want to offer them unbeatable value every time they come into the store.” To help with larger purchases, Tahnee said Odes Superstore offers interest–free finance to approved applicants (T&Cs apply) — and, all they need to do, is fill out a simple, 10–minute application. “Our ‘bundle deals’ on MX gear have proven very popular the last couple of years, so we are delighted to have them available again, as they give customers significant discounts off the recommended retail price. “The store also has an extensive range of accessories

and spare parts, as well as buggies, lawn care and power products,” she said. And, once you’ve selected the perfect gift, the Odes Superstore team is more than happy to keep your presents warehoused on site until closer to Christmas. “With larger bikes and the like, we understand it can be hard to hide them from curious eyes at home, so it’s not a problem for us to keep them in store for you until you’re ready to collect them,” Tahnee said. If you’re looking for a truly unique Christmas present that is guaranteed to put a smile on any face, be sure to visit Tahnee, Tony or John at Odes Superstore at 178 Anzac Avenue, or give them a call on 4633 3304. Where people are most important Highfields Garden Centre value their customers and staff above all else

ighfields Garden Centre has been an integral part of the Highfields community since at least 1985, with Matthew and Lorelei Bartkowski as proud owners for the last seven and a half years. With eight dedicated staff, this small, family–owned local business has developed a reputation the larger organisations can only dream of. “We don’t have an unlimited corporate advertising budget with unlimited backing, or shareholders to placate,” Matthew said. “Our customers and our staff are the most important parts of our business. “We give personalised service and have extensive knowledge and experience to back us up,” he said. To Matthew, it’s the little things that make all the difference. “We carry products to customers’ cars and have a plant identification and problem–solving service,” he said. “We can give recommendations to customers looking for tradespeople to do all kinds of work, we order plants

for people from all over Australia, including Melbourne, Perth and Darwin, and we deliver seven days a week.” A typical day can see Matthew doing anything from serving customers, answering phones, loading stock, ordering, bookkeeping, and invoicing. And, if that isn’t enough, there’s still the deliveries, advertising, vehicle maintenance and the day–to–day decision–making necessary to keep a business running successfully. Matthew said he gets genuine satisfaction out of helping a customer with their needs. “Particularly when they’ve been let down elsewhere, or told that it can’t be done or isn’t available,” he said. With a wide selection of stock, Highfields Garden Centre has established itself as the ‘go–to’ destination. “We get told all the time that our plant nursery is the best in the region and that we have all different plants to what everyone else has,” Matthew said. “Many people tell us they’ll only shop here, nowhere else. We have people who come from all over the

Toowoomba area, including the opposite side of town, and most drive past our competitors to come here.” Matthew said their business is constantly evolving and improving. “Our main focus is on customer service and high–quality products at realistic prices,” he said. In seven and a half years, this business has been transformed into what it is today, and that process in ongoing. “Our small, locally owned family business is here to stay. Come and check what we have, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.”

Return’em Says Thank You! Advertorial

A huge year at E&E Waste Return’em, creating a place that makes it easy for families to return their containers… From its inception, the Return’em for Cash team have strived to be wholly customer fo-

cused. According to CEO Shane McGuire, the biggest challenge from day one has been keeping up with the sheer volume of containers being returned. Shane’s team designed and built their own counting trays, woolpack frames and bottle cages in anticipation of this, and soon after opening, they had to develop dynamic counting systems to ensure quick turnaround and eliminate errors. Initially hiring 12 new staff, they set about developing a family friendly environment where children could participate. It was a challenge to balance this with bulk return customers and truck and forklifts movements, but the creation of safe areas, visible

signage and a heap of parking, achieved success. Early December 2018 saw E&E Waste installing the first of nine state-of-the-art, high volume counting machines to ensure minimal wait times. Developed by the experts in South Australia to recognise any container instantly, regardless of its condition, these machines allow customers to feed glass, plastic bottles and cans all at the same time. Consequently, long lines are virtually unheard of and the staff are all about helping customers. Children seem to love feeding in containers and the waist-high built-in tip-and-sort trays, the clever part of this design, mean they can get involved. When the sign says

Prim and proper refreshment Here’s one British favourite everyone can get behind on a summer’s day

othing says ‘summer’ quite like a Pimm’s cocktail. Traditionally a drink enjoyed by millions across the pond, this refreshing alcoholic beverage has made itself firmly at home on Australian shores. Try this tasty Pimm’s cocktail recipe at your outdoor Christmas feast this year. For a non–alcoholic version, you can substitute the alcohol with berry–flavoured mineral water.

What you’ll need:

■ 120g fresh strawberries ■ 1/2 cup mint sprigs ■ 1 Lebanese cucumber ■ 1 Lemon ■ 125ml Pimm’s No.1 ■ 80ml strawberry–flavoured vodka or orange–flavoured liqueur ■ 1L chilled lemonade ■ 500ml chilled ginger ale

■ Crushed ice (to serve)

How to make it:

Step 1: Thinly slice the strawberries and peel the cucumber into ribbons. Separately, slice the lemon into wedges and reserve, along with some strawberries and cucumber, for garnish. Place the strawberries and cucumber in a serving jug, then top with crushed ice and mint. Step 2: Pour the Pimm’s and vodka or liqueur over the ice, cucumber and strawberries, adding lemonade and ginger ale to top it off. Step 3: Garnish with reserved fruits and serve immediately. — Recipe adjusted from taste.com.au

2019 Adopt a Family for Christmas Appeal

SUPPOR SHANE

T E D BY WEBCK

For most, Christmas is a time of joy, gifts and quality time with family, but there’s many families in our community who experience financial hardship or difficulty. The Adopt a Family for Christmas Appeal works with local charities and welfare agencies to identify families in need that you can ‘adopt’ by donating gifts, hampers or food. Head online for the list of families in need, select the family you’d like to adopt, then contact the charity listed to find out how you can make Christmas truly memorable for everyone in your community.

ith a distinctive grey frontage on the corner of Neil and Thomas streets, Garden City Tyres and Mechanical has celebrated more than two years of becoming an independent retailer. The make–over last year allowed for a re–branding of the business, while still offering expert advice and servicing in vehicle maintenance, tyres, and brakes. Owner Jai Ozog said his staff are just as committed to customer service as when he bought the business eight years ago. “We have 11 employees on staff who all enjoy four–wheel–driving, camping, and motor sports, so they can speak from experience when recommending a product,” Jai said. With people’s lives becoming more and more busy, Jai said it’s inevitable that regular car maintenance can be forgotten. “You don’t think about your car every single day; that’s why we encourage customers to come in to ensure their vehicle is ready for any Christmas travels,” Jai said. He added that the business has had to do a couple of major fixes recently. “It reinforces that, if you neglect your vehicle, it can come back to haunt you sooner or later.

“While we all enjoyed tinkering under the bonnet in our younger years, cars have advanced so much you need the expertise of mechanics who are across the sophisticated electronics of today’s vehicles,” he said. In addition to an expansive workshop, customers will love the well–stocked showroom. “We’ve just had a cracker of a month on wheels,” Jai said. “It’s an accessory that dresses up a vehicle straight away for customers who want to make a statement and I know they’ll be very impressed by our range.” Jai said, apart from the rims, Garden City Tyre and Mechanical also stocks a wide selection of 4WD, passenger, and light truck accessories. “Our dedication to service is at the heart of everything we do and, as an independent business, we can offer products perfectly suited to our customers. “It’s the personal attention that’s important to us, not the robotic feel you sometimes get when you’re treated as a number instead of a customer.” Jai said education is a big part of customer service. “We strive to help our customers appreciate that there’s more to a tyre than it simply being black and round,” he said.

The staff at Garden City Tyres and Mechanical will happily explain the many differences between quality tyres and cheaper brands (among other topics) in a way easily understood by their customers. “Working with a customer to better serve their needs is what it’s all about, and that’s why our staff have a lot of training and constantly keep up with the latest developments.” As a Toowoomba business, Jai said the focus is always about “keeping it local”. “We like to help charities around the region and give back to the community that supports us,” he said.

Step 1 Combine the sugar, maple syrup, honey and mustard in a bowl, stirring until the sugar dissolves.

Honeyed Christmas ham W

hat would a Christmas feast be without the ham? In households all across Australia, families will be cutting into this delicious Christmas favourite, all with their own spin on a classic recipe. For a great centrepiece and a tasty meal, try this great honey–glazed ham recipe:

What you’ll need

■ 100 g brown sugar ■ 80 ml maple syrup ■ 80 ml honey ■ 1 tbsp Dijon mustard ■ 8 kg whole leg ham (on the bone)

Step 2 Preheat the oven to 170 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, line a large baking dish with two layers of non–stick baking paper. Place an oven shelf in the lowest position and remove all other shelves. Using a sharp knife, cut around the shank of the ham (about 10 cm from the end) and run the knife under the rind around the edge of the ham. Gently lift the rind off in one piece, by running your fingers between the rind and the fat. Score the fat in a diamond pattern (about 5 mm deep) and stud the centres of the diamonds with cloves. Transfer to the prepared banking dish. Step 3 Brush one–third of the glaze over the ham and bake, brushing with the glaze every 25 minutes for one hour and 30 minutes. — Recipe courtesy of taste.com.au
