VINTAGE BLENDS WITH MODERN Andersens has inspiring ideas for you

W

hen renovating a home or remodelling a room, one challenge you may face is how to make the old work with

the new. If there are vintage elements you wish to keep, combining them with more contemporary additions can bring your home’s design into the 21st century. A good tip for successfully marrying features from different eras is to reference the older style in your new inclusions. New additions should work in harmony with any permanent existing features that you’re keeping. In the Queenslander home featured, Lauren Pearse from Rylo Interiors recognised the age of the house and, out of respect for its history, worked to blend in the extensions with the original look of the building. To achieve this, Lauren carried over the traditional visual elements of the building on the exterior of the extension. The interiors, on the other hand, were designed to be more suited to modern living. Contemporary lifestyles in Australia ask for plenty of space for the family to congregate or entertain. For more inspiration about what to do with your interiors, visit your local Andersens showroom or go to the website, andersens.com.au.

FAIRYTALES DO HAPPEN Time on the dance floor turns into so much more

T

HE universe works in weird and wonderful ways, and sometimes the journey to finding love can be no different. For Dempsey Hurle and Ian Nicol, their journey started on the dance floor of the White Bull Tavern in Roma. How? They were up doing the chicken dance together. Fast forward seven years and the couple is happily married after a ceremony at Boondooma Dam on April 28 this year. Dempsey said the newlyweds’ special day was just like a fairytale. “I’m sure every bride says it, but it was perfect,” she said. “We wanted a casual, relaxed and fun environment and that’s exactly what we got. “Apart from adding the final touches to the set-up, people were off fishing and enjoying a weekend of camping pre-wedding.” The pair got engaged on the Easter long weekend last year, but it didn’t go quite how Ian was expecting. “We went on a day trip to North Stradbroke Island, where Ian tried a number of times to propose but I refused to walk any further up the beach to the places he wanted to go,” Dempsey said. “He ended up getting down on one knee the following day (Easter Monday) after cooking me breakfast. “Rod Stewart’s Rhythm of My Heart was playing at the time.” Flash forward a year and the pair topped that romantic moment with the wedding. “The reception was held up at the Bunkhouse, which overlooks

the lake and was all open air with plenty of lights, including a large backlit wooden heart that our groomsman Dan had made for us,” Dempsey said. “My great uncle provided an old wooden boat that we used as our bar with a 1950s motor attached. “There were plenty of laughs and drinks shared around the fire and a ton of dancing and singing throughout the night. “It was a day to remember and I’m glad we got to share it with so many amazing people.” Eighty close family members and friends were there when Dempsey walked down the aisle to the acoustic version of 500 Miles by Jefr Tale. To keep with the theme of weird and wonderful, the couple’s 10-month-old ridgeback puppy was a part of the bridal party. Amanda was pleased her dad said more than just “thanks for coming” in his speech, and best man Luke Sellars and maid of honour Morgan Cummings both delivered pearlers. The couple acknowledge their dream wedding wouldn’t have come to fruition without the help of people around them, and will be forever grateful. “The majority of our wedding was DIY,” Amanda said, “from graphically designing/hand-making the invitations, programs, confetti cups and signage to all the centrepieces, floral arrangements, tipi arbour, catering, doughnut wall and our wedding cake. The couple looks forward to a life of love and laughs together.

HOW TO BE CAMERA READY Take the steps to look your very best for photos on that special occasion

W

edding Bells are ringing because you have found that someone special, or perhaps you are preparing for your graduation. Your dress is sorted, all the planning prep is going along smoothly and it’s now time to get your skin camera-ready. Whether you are super organised or a last-minute girl and the event is only a couple of weeks away, the team at Ella Bache have some pro tips to get you looking your very best. SEE YOUR SKINCARE PROFESSIONAL: Your therapist will plan a facial regime, or if time is of the essence she will have a quick-fix solution. We have a range of facials to boost collagen and reduce fine lines and wrinkles, or a microdermabrasion facial to reduce pores and brighten your complexion, or maybe something as simple as a deep cleansing facial. BROWS: Start with a professional brow shape a couple of months out, then maintain with regular appointments in the lead-up. LASH EXTENSIONS: Lash extensions will enhance your

Ella Bache’s Natalie Leis.

natural lash line, giving you a fuller, more dramatic look with no fear of smudging. Try them a month prior to ensure you don’t have any adverse reactions. WAXING: It is ideal to do all hair removal one to two days before having your tan. This allows the skin to settle and gives a streak-free tan. TANNING: Fake it, don’t bake it – all the colour without the sun damage! Consider a trial so you can see the colour. Our airbrush tan is enriched with moisturising properties to promote longevity. MANICURES AND PEDICURES: Schedule an appointment the week of your event. Pro tip: Swap normal polish for shellac, which dries hard instantly and will last you throughout your honeymoon or Schoolies. MAKE-UP: We suggest Napoleon Perdis make-up with its true-to-pigment, skin-brightening technology, which stops flashback on photos. Cameras can obscure up to 50% of your make-up.

GET THE RIGHT LOOK etting into a good skincare regime well in advance of a wedding will help you look great on the day. Whether using quality skincare products, microdermabrasion, or good nutrition and hydration, skin is something that takes time to improve. The next step is to find the right foundation for your skin tone and type, as well as a good primer that will help set it. This will ensure you put your best face forward the whole day. Eyebrows are huge at the moment. It’s a thing people either love or hate. Gone are the days of slick, skinny eyebrows. The thicker the better. Pencilling in or filling in your eyebrows is very common. Have a beauty professional groom your eyebrows at least three days beforehand. This will enhance your features and frame your eyes. If you are using eyeliner, go for a waterproof and smudge-proof liquid version to avoid teary raccoon eyes. Depending on what’s going on upstairs with your eyes, lipstick can be bold (if eye make-up is softer), or a neutral shade (if you like a smoky eye treatment).

• Rural Family Support Program • Community Development Program

Do some research beforehand so you can show your make-up artist what look you are after. There’s plenty of inspiration on Pinterest or Instagram. Make sure you finish your make-up at least an hour before your photographer arrives, so you can get dressed in a stress-free state. HAIRSTYLE TIPS Wedding hairstyles generally have to hold it together for about 10 hours, so it is important to choose one that isn’t too complicated and works for your hair type. It makes sense to test-drive your hairstyle, not only to see if it suits you but also to test its holding power. Recent trends in hair design have leaned towards a more natural look rather than a formal construction. While curls and frizz should be somewhat tamed, natural waves running free, paired with something like a flower crown, are quite popular with modern brides. The simple up-do centred around a bun is also in fashion. A bun that looks like it was created effortlessly but is put together with precision is a popular, less formal choice.

PHOTO: CARLA YEO PHOTOGRAPHY

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER W

hether it’s choosing a photographer to capture some family memories – so you don’t have to squeeze yourself into a family selfie shot – or selecting a photographer to capture your wedding day, it can be a daunting task. CARLA YEO I firmly believe you will get the most out of your photography if you feel at ease with your photographer. It is extremely important for me to have a comfortable connection with my clients. This helps to ensure the images are relaxed, raw and honest. I love the ability to capture real-life moments and natural emotions of those I get to work with. Delivering images that reflect a client’s personally is what a lifestyle photographer does best. It’s a photographer’s job to give a level of direction to those they capture. When considering the right photographer for you, the key is finding a level of direction you are comfortable with. I like to guide my clients for the most natural shots, sometimes with limited instruction and often taking the candid approach. Other photographers may find a more assertive approach works for them, but everyone is different and this guidance will vary as photographers work with their clients and the elements to create the best possible shots. It’s a good idea to research a photographer’s work to get a

“feel” for their style. Although most photographers can work with a variety of requests, they usually have their own style stamped across their work. If you have seen images from a photographer’s recent work, you can expect that your photos captured by them will reflect a similar style. In photography, light is everything. The way a photographer renders light, be it natural or artificial, is imperative to the quality of images you will end up with. If you are concerned about the location for your shoot, the time of day, lighting limitations etc, chat to your photographer and they can work with you to ensure your images are captured utilising the best light available. I believe that in our region we are spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting a photographer. We have some real talent behind the lens, each with their own style. A good photographer is one who is passionate about their work and delivering images that their clients will love. Try talking to friends and family about their photography experiences, understanding who they have liked, and why. Do your research and find a certain something that resonates with you, a “feeling”, a connection or simply an admiration for the style of photos you are wanting for yourself. And then try to relax. Enjoy your photo shoot, your wedding day or your special event. Trust in your decision and let your photographer guide you to document your memories.

FORMAL FEVER Make the lead-up to your big night as enjoyable and stress-free as possible by starting early

our formal is a once-in-a-lifetime event, so to ensure that it is the night you’ve dreamt of, planning is vital. It may seem like an overwhelming task, but if you set time frames to have items crossed off your to-do list, your plans will run smoothly. Six to 12 months to go: Write down your to-do list and set yourself a budget. Start thinking about your outfit, looking in magazines and browsing in shops for a look or a colour you like. If you need a partner, start looking now to ensure they keep the night free for you. Choose someone you feel comfortable with and who you think will feel comfortable with you, your friends and, in some cases, parents. Three to six months to go: Make all your bookings, such as hair and make-up appointments, flowers, suit hire, photographer and your transport for the night. If you’d like to have dental work done to give you that brilliant smile, make an appointment with your dentist as early as possible. By now you should have chosen your outfit. Two months to go: Buy your accessories and shoes, and take photos of hairstyles from magazines or keep some pictures on your phone to show your hair stylist. Make sure you know exactly what you want. The final week: Have any final beauty treatments done and try your whole outfit on together to avoid any last-minute surprises. On the day: Make sure you allow plenty of time to get ready,

then relax and enjoy yourself in the lead-up. Hair and make-up The hairstyle and make-up you wear for your formal can very well make or break your final look, so you need to put a lot of thought into it. Two classic looks that never fail are the smoky eye and the bold lip, which although timeless can be tweaked to incorporate a more modern twist. The bold lip is a classic look that adds instant sophistication to an outfit, and while a vibrant red is the norm in this style, deep burgundy and plum colours have become the latest trend, thanks to celebrities such as Lorde. Bright orange tones have also become popular as a lip colour in the past year. Let your lips do the talking by pairing this look with natural foundation, and winged eyeliner and mascara for flirtatious eyes. If you choose to focus on accentuating your eyes, the same rule applies, with natural foundation and subtle lip gloss or lipstick providing the best look. While black and brown shades are the classic colours for a smoky eye, like anything, they need to suit your skin tone, as sometimes very dark eye make-up on someone with pale skin can be overwhelming. Deep metallic blues are also very much in vogue at the moment, and if you have blue or brown eyes this can really make them pop. Exaggerated winged eyes are also popular, but if you are doing your own make-up, be careful to master this prior to the day.

AM I IN A DE FACTO RELATIONSHIP? Max Sutton, graduate solicitor/paralegal at Best Wilson Buckley Family Law

T

here have never really been any hard and fast rules about whether people are in a de facto relationship. In a simple sense under Australian law, a de facto relationship is one between two adults who live together as a couple and are not married to one another or related. However, there have been findings that couples are in a de facto relationship even though they are not living under the same roof. There are a number of factors that can be used to determine whether you are in a de facto relationship. These include: 1. The length of your relationship; 2. Whether you and the other person resided together; 3. Whether a sexual relationship existed; 4. Financial interdependence, such as pooled funds or joint accounts; 5. The ownership, use and acquisition of property (including property owned individually); 6. Whether there are any biological children; 7. The care and support of children from this or prior relationships; 8. The performance of household duties;

9. The degree of mutual commitment and support; and 10. The public reputation of your relationship as seen by other people – for example, did you go to events as a couple or would someone who saw you in public think you are a couple? In making a determination about whether a relationship exists, a court does not have to find that all of the criteria mentioned above exist for it to make such a declaration. A court can use its discretion and give weight to the factors it thinks are appropriate. Even if these elements exist or existed, the relationship must have lasted a minimum duration of two years before any orders can be made, unless there have been substantial contributions by either party or there is a child of the relationship. De facto relationships also don’t distinguish between same sex and heterosexual relationships, and it doesn’t matter if a party is legally married to someone else or in another de facto relationship at the same time. An application to the court must be made within two years from the date on which the de facto relationship ended in order to protect your rights to a property settlement. Exceptions are sometimes made on this but they are just that, exceptions.

EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY A little creativity can help you keep costs down FOOD and alcohol, along with the venue, are the most expensive parts of a wedding. On average, Australians spend $18,000 on the three. Sometimes it can be difficult to keep costs low, especially if venues do not allow you to self-cater or bring your own drinks. Here are some tips and things to think about if you want to keep food and drink costs low. CATERING ON A BUDGET: If you’re after a formal sit-down meal, it doesn’t have to cost a small fortune. There are plenty of professional and affordable caterers available to put together your ideal wedding meal. Do your research to find the best deal and make sure your venue is happy to work with an outside caterer. DIY FOOD: If your venue allows, why not self-cater some of the food, if not all of the food, at your wedding? Appetisers can be very expensive to organise so why not hold a cooking session with family and friends to make some nibbles the day before the wedding?

Self-catering will allow you to make some fancy things at a cheaper cost. If you don’t have time to make some, buy things from supermarkets – either fresh or frozen. To save even more money, don’t have servers. Just ask a family member or friend to place the appetisers on tables for people to enjoy. DO YOU NEED ALCOHOL? Do you and your partner not drink much? If you don’t drink usually, then why have alcohol at your wedding? It would just be an extra cost that is not about you on a day that is all about you. If you do want to have a drinks package, consider having an open bar for only two hours instead of four. Or if your venue allows it, bring your own alcohol, as buying from a bottle shop will be drastically cheaper than purchasing from the venue, especially if you buy in bulk. FOOD TRUCKS: A new trend taking over weddings, food trucks offer a much cheaper catering option for couples. From taco trucks to wood-fired pizzas and other street food, basically any form of food comes in a food truck these days.

IT’S TIME FOR CAKE

Incorporate your theme, style and personal tastes in one

W

HO doesn’t love to tuck into a nice slice of wedding cake after a wedding dinner? While you can never go wrong with a traditional white vanilla, tiered wedding cake, other classic flavours such as chocolate have made a comeback in recent years, as has buttercream icing. Trends have shown people like to decorate cakes with cute, cartoon-like toppers (the figurines made to look like the bride and groom that sit atop the cake). For those who want a more elegant look, metallic wedding cakes are the latest trend. Made with a basic wedding cake base, the cake is decorated in edible glitter. For a more rustic, vintage look, a naked cake could be the way to go. It has been constructed so everybody can see what is inside.

For those wanting to do a wedding cake on a tighter budget, there are a number of options available. A cupcake tower could be a great way to provide guests with a sweet treat but at half the cost. Red velvet cupcakes or even basic chocolate or vanilla cupcakes always go down well. You could even provide each guest with an extra cupcake to take home as a wedding favour. For those who don’t like cake, a sweets bar could be a good option. Set up a table with different kinds of lollies, chocolates and ice creams that you love and you’ll have the perfect sweet buffet for guests to enjoy. A dessert bar can also be themed to your preference.

SPEND THE NIGHT SOMEWHERE SPECIAL Whether it’s the wedding suite where you spent your first night as a married couple, or the cabin where you spent your first holiday together, spend the night somewhere special. Under the Safer Communities program, I encourage community groups to apply for a share of $30 million to boost community safety and security. Grants of $1000 right up to $1 million are available. This funding goes to crime hotspots to prevent, deter and detect crime, and protect community organisations. CCTV cameras and security lighting provide an extra layer of protection in the community. As well as infrastructure funding, round three provides early intervention funding for community organisations. This will help Police-Citizens Youth Clubs, Blue Light organisations and Youth Off The Streets with their early intervention and youth activities around Australia. By joining the Be Connected Network, organisations across

Maranoa can help our seniors maintain their independence and keep connected with family and friends. Using the internet is not just something young people do. We want to make sure everyone can use computers and the internet to improve their lives. We encourage community organisations to apply for Building Digital Skills grants, which range from $2500 to $15,000, to deliver free digital skills training to people over 50 as part of the Be Connected program. Applications for the Safer Communities program close on September 25. For more information about the infrastructure stream or early intervention stream, please visit business.gov.au/ assistance/safer-communities-fund or phone 132 846. The application form for Building Digital Skills grants will be available until September 28. The finish date for all delivery rounds is June 30, 2019. For more information about Be Connected or to join the network, go to www.beconnected. esafety.gov.au or phone 1300 795 897. — David Littleproud, Member for Maranoa

LOCAL HELP IS AT HAND Group strives to meet community needs

W

HEN drought strikes, farmers do it the toughest at first but the flow-on effects to an entire community can be

severe. Robyn Fuhrmeister says Care Balonne – an information and referral centre aimed at developing strategies to help with community needs – is a first point of contact for anyone in the Balonne Shire struggling with finances, mental health, relationships or family problems. She says the Balonne region is lucky to have a vibrant tourism trade helping to keep the town afloat, but the hot weather will reduce tourist numbers and increase the struggles for farmers and the businesses that support them. Knowing farmers are often the last to put their hands up for help, Ms Fuhrmeister says people concerned about friends or neighbours can approach Care Balonne for advice. “At the end of the day there’s not one single thing to fix it, but all things together can make a difference,” she said. “The drought won’t go away, but at least we can let them know we care.” Visit www.carebalonne.com or phone 4625 5450.

YOU LIKE IT, NOW PUT A RING ON IT There are a few ways to go about choosing the perfect ring for him and her

T

he tradition of wearing the ring on your left ring finger is an old one (we’re talking ancient Rome) and the idea behind it was that the vein in the fourth finger on the left hand, supposedly, ran directly to one’s heart. If you plan on wearing your wedding band on the “vein of love” with your engagement ring, then you should consider something that is going to complement that ring. PERFECT PAIR Most jewellers will offer rings designed to fit together perfectly, edge to edge. Have a discussion with your jeweller about what options are available in matching your engagement ring. Many women like the harmony that matching metals, and diamonds of the same shape, can create. MIX AND MATCH While some couples strive for symmetry it’s perfectly okay to do your own thing, even mixing metals and styles. If one of your rings is a family heirloom but you have your eye on a different style for the other, or you simply like the look of yellow gold against white gold, that’s fine too. You can mix and match vintage styles as long as the design is along the same lines and doesn’t clash.

Engagement Parties

Take a page out of Queen Elizabeth II’s book – she wears her three-carat diamond engagement ring alongside her Welsh gold wedding band. CLAW VS CHANNEL With a diamond ring you have a few options in the setting. For ultimate brilliance, a claw setting will allow light into the diamond. If you’re worried your lifestyle might wear on your ring, a channel setting will offer a smoother look as well as protect the diamonds from abrasion. FOR HIM When it comes to choosing wedding bands, men have a greater selection than ever with unique detailing, brushed surfaces and accent diamonds customising a ring to suit the individual. The most popular type of men’s wedding ring is the plain metal band. And if both parties are happy with simplicity and want to match, many jewellers offer wedding bands suited for both men and women.

WHEN SHOULD YOU HAVE A SKIN CHECK? f there is one thing common to every Australian, it is the need to protect ourselves from the sun. Not only should we protect ourselves, we also require regular skin checks by a professional. Our health is too important to take risks with skin cancer. Research shows that 81 per cent of all diagnosed cancers are skin cancer, making it by far the most common cancer in Australia and the one most people will develop in their lifetime. When is a skin check advisable? It is important to have a check at least once a year or when you have a lesion you are concerned about. “Skin cancer is not a black and white science,” says Dr Albert Vermeulen from Cosmetic Elegance Clinic. “If you are worried about something on your skin, have it checked out because it is just not worth the risk.” Medical director Dr Eddie Roos added: “Skin cancers are not always easy to diagnose because cancers don’t read the text books.”

Dr Roos says other triggers for a skin check could be a sore that bleeds, heals and bleeds again, or any sore that does not heal in six to eight weeks. Debunking the myths Some of us are working with false information on skin cancer. For example, did you know that not all melanomas are black and raised? Some are pink. Melanoma can occur anywhere and in places such as nail beds, between your toes and on the soles of the feet. Another common misconception is that skin cancer is an older person’s disease. The most likely age for developing melanoma is between 15 and 45. Melanoma is one of Australia’s most prevalent cancers and also one of the deadliest cancers, but if it is treated early good outcomes can be achieved. Phone 4638 2700 or email info@cosmeticelegance.com.au to arrange your skin check. Go to www.cosmeticelegance.com.au for additional helpful information on skin cancer.
