New radio hosts a

‘HIT’

Nik and Beth are radio announcers that are thrilled to call Toowoomba their home and are ready to share their lives, struggles and stories with Toowoomba’s locals through the radio.

ou have probably heard their voices, but you might not know their faces; the team that hit the airwaves at 6.00am each and every weekday on 100.7FM. Yes, we are talking about Nikolas (Nik) Stuart and Bethany (Beth) Larson, the duo that took over Toowoomba’s breakfast radio on Hit South Queensland after Toowoomba’s legendary Hamish Carter’s incredible 20-year stint at the station. Nik and Beth have worked incredibly hard to make it to where they are today and couldn’t be more excited that their dream careers are taking shape in our Toowoomba. They are Queenslanders at heart, but their industry has moved them around the country as the voice of many locations. Originally from Brisbane, Nik started out producing shows for Triple M and B105, before wanting to talk more on the radio. He then moved to Townsville to host a rugby league show. HAMISH CARTER “I was able to do a breakfast show for Bundaberg from Townsville while they were building the studios, and then eventually moved down to live in Bundaberg for Triple M Breakfast,” he says. It was during this time Nik got the call about a vacancy in Toowoomba for breakfast presenter on HIT FM South Queensland. “Coming from a smaller town like Bundaberg, it has been weird for me to move to a city where people are so engaged in radio,” Nik says. “People do genuinely care about it and that’s a responsibility we are ready to take on.” Beth has had her fair share of travels too but now she is exactly where she wants to be. Beth started out in community radio on the Gold Coast, her hometown, before snagging her first full time job doing breakfast radio at 19 in South Australia. After two years she moved on to Townsville to do a weekday music show before heading back south to Canberra where she transitioned herself back to breakfast radio on weekdays and weekends. “They told me there was an opportunity here in Toowoomba,

feature and I chased it down, and I chased it down hard,” Beth says. Now 26-year-old, Beth was excited to return to Toowoomba, with a plethora of fond memories of the town. “As a little girl growing up in south-east Queensland, some of my favourite memories are from holidays in Toowoomba. “There’s a spiritual connection for me,” Beth says, knowing it would feel right as soon as she arrived in Toowoomba. Beth snagged herself the dream job late last year, and it didn’t take long before they partnered her up with Nik. “I demoed with a few people, and with Nik it was the most natural; it felt like we’ve known each other forever,” Beth says about first working with Nik. It might sound glamorous to be a radio host going live to air each morning, but the job takes a lot of dedication and some serious time management skills. Beth normally wakes up at 3:25, while Nik sneaks in a few extra minutes and stirs at 3:30, ready to be in the office for a 4am start. “Some days I’m really excited to be on air, and I’ll be waiting and thinking ‘is it time to get up yet?’” Beth says. “But other days it can be really hard, and you have to be able to hide it.” “If you are tired all the time, you can get emotional and feel like you’re going to cry over the smallest thing,” she says. In an industry where you need to be the vibrant sound that sings through the radio waking up the 4350 and surrounds it can be tough when emotional burden piles on. “You do have to mentally prepare yourself,” Nik says as he told Style Magazine about a rough week the pair had after interviewing subject matter that covered suicide and depression. “You’re constantly all over the place, but that’s something we want our show to be – it’s a show that can tackle big issues, and also have a laugh. “We don’t want to shy away from anything,” he says. Nik and Beth went to air for the first time in Toowoomba in late March, “It feels like a city, but it’s got more of an authentic country feel compared to somewhere like the Gold Coast and Brisbane,” Beth says. “It’s got more heart,” Nik continues. “Coming from Bundy, my fiance Jazz and I are honestly really stoked to come here and have a huge range of cafes to be able to go to. “It’s this big melting pot of country and city, and it’s a really great mix of both,” he says. With 20 years combined industry experience, Nik and Beth understand audiences want to hear a familiar voice every day and they both agree it is an honour to follow in the footsteps of the much-loved Hamish Carter. “I think Nik and Beth probably had the hardest start to a new radio job ever with the COVID restrictions not giving them a chance to get out and see all the wonderful places that they broadcast to,” Hamish Carter tells Style Magazine. “Now that things are starting to ease it’s only a matter of time before you’ll run into them at Grand Central, the PCYC markets or maybe even Fitzy’s. “I think they are a perfect fit for Breakfast radio in Toowoomba, I listen every morning on my way to work and love the vibe of the show, I can’t count how many times I’ve been listening and said to myself ‘I wish I had thought of that’,” he said, confirming that they have his blessing.

eople travel from all over Australia to visit the High Country outside Toowoomba and yet it seems that we locals are just discovering it. I met with Sue and Jonathan Barford, hosts of Hazelmont Cottage at Ravensbourne, to gather some local intel on the situation. “It’s true that most of our guests come from Brisbane,” said Sue. “They come here to get away from the city and soak in the country. They just want to chill by the fire or out on the deck with a wine, listening to the birds and at night they love the stars – which are amazing out here. “They go for walks and enjoy the region’s local produce. We have put together a range of packages including local wines, cheeses, olives and beautiful breads. “We recommend visitors do a tour of the region with High Country Tours because they get to know the hamlets, the history, produce, art galleries and our superb restaurants.”

TOP TEN THINGS TO DO IN THE HIGH COUNTRY 1. WALKS So many great walks! Let’s start with Ravensbourne National Park where there are several circuits and don’t forget sundowners at Gus Bueutel Lookout. Then there’s The Great Short Walk (around 3km) along part of the old Munro Tramway Historical Route at Palmtree. Oh and everyone loves the trails to the waterfall through Crows Nest National Park.

2. FOOD You are seriously spoiled for choice because each hamlet offers a celebration of the local gifts from this famous rich red soil. You’ll soon see why people travel from Brisbane to enjoy our country pubs, cute cafes and exciting eateries. Take an esky and stock up on local produce from Bunnyconnellan Olive Grove & Vineyard, Pechey Distillery (check website for opening), Crows Nest Cordials, Hollands Wines, Rosalie House Cellar Door, Palmtree Farm Persimmons (seasonal), Hampton Blue (also seasonal), Halo Farm produce available at Emeraude.

4. LOCAL LAKES Check Toowoomba Regional Council website for information before you head to Lake Cooby, Lake Perseverance and Lake Cressbrook. Of the three Cressbrook has more recreational activities on offer including bush walking, sailing, camping, picnicking, kayaking and canoeing.

5. GARDENS Davidson Arboretum Cawdor Road near Peacehaven Botanical Gardens and Brindabella Rose Garden (seasonal); Pechey State Forest is a 100 year old pine plantation with picnic area.

6. CYCLE The new easy path from the New England Highway and Cawdor Road intersection at Highfields to Toowoomba Christian College. The more adventurous should check out “Fitch’s Feats” gravel trails from Hampton to Crows Nest via Pechey State Forest and from Geham to Pechey (you may need a mountain bike for some of these).

7. HORSE RIDING Cowboy Up at Emu Creek (20mins out of Crows Nest)

MILLINERY Think seasonal: so for winter stick to luscious autumn/winter materials â€“ feathers, leather, felt, and wool are ideal options. A note of thanks from St Andrew’s

uring both 2018 and 2019 Kaye Foley from Kaye Foley Modelling Academy and Kenn Zerner from St Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital held the Stepping Out Winter Glamour Runway fashion event. Kaye felt a need to give back to St Andrew’s after several of her

friends had received treatment through the St Andrew’s John Stedman Oncology Unit. Kaye and Kenn put together a small team of dedicated volunteers who assisted tirelessly over the eight-month period prior to each of the events. Local businesses and local contractors working at St Andrew’s on capital projects were approached for their support of the event. These businesses gave generously both merchandise and funds to ensure the event was a success. Over the two years the events raised more than $50,000 which went a long way to assisting the many patients and, particularly, oncology patients who are treated at St Andrew’s each year right through their cancer journey. The proceeds purchased three wellness trolleys with all their accessories, a green wall outside the patients rooms in the medical ward, a series of spectacular acrylic prints produced by RawInk – a local provider – a new privacy wall to give our families of ICU patients a private waiting area, and a glass privacy screen around the main desk in Oncology. St Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital would like to thank all of those who made this incredible event possible as well as those in the community and surrounds who attended.

Melanoma twist leads to heart diagnosis Pittsworth man John Jenkins is in the unusual position of feeling lucky he needed to have a melanoma removed last year.

ohn recalls he was coming out of an anaesthetic at a nearby day surgery when he experienced a rapid heart rate and then had hypotension with chest pain. He was admitted quickly through St Vincent’s Private Hospital’s Emergency Chest Pain Service and came under the care of local Cardiologist Dr Ryan Schrale. John had a series of urgent diagnostic tests onsite at the hospital’s cath lab which discovered John had two severely blocked coronary arteries. Dr Schrale performed surgery to insert stents, tiny wire mesh tubes that are placed into a narrowed or blocked coronary artery. John, who turned 74 in May, laughs at the description that he’s a “bionic man” but wonders what might have happened without St Vincent’s when the chest pain and other symptoms started. “I think having the melanoma removed was a blessing in disguise,” John said. “I was very lucky to have Dr Ryan – we call him that rather than Dr Schrale. “He’s a lovely man. He explains everything and he has a good bedside manner.” John said in further good news, a recent check-up with his favourite “doctor with heart” revealed he’s “fighting fit”. “He doesn’t want to see me for another 12 months.” If you’re experiencing chest pain, call triple-0 immediately and request a transfer to St Vincent’s Private Hospital’s Emergency Chest Pain Service. Speak easy at home Lockdown brought the home bar into its own and ever since we have been entertaining friends and family in lieu of hitting the town.

o, what’s involved in setting up a home bar? Let’s start with the basics that you will need to have your personal speak easy prepped and ready to shake and stir. Equipment: cocktail shaker, nip pourer, strainer, ice, muddlers and stirrers, openers for beer bottles. Supplies: your favourite drinks of course! Glasses: now here’s where things can get a little complicated… WINE GLASS According to premium wine glass maker, Riedel, stemware consists of three parts: the bowl, stem and base. The height and width of the base are part of the glass design. Grape varietal specific stemware features finely-tuned glass bowls consisting of three variables – shape, size and rim diameter to translate the “message” of the wine to the human sense. The wide base is in place for stability, and the stem allows for the temperature to not be altered by the heat from your hand. But, Riedel’s stemless red wine glasses are designed to be warmed up by your hand to release the aroma and flavour; we told you it would get complicated. Lastly the bowl which hosts the wine is designed for proper swirl – picking the shape of the bowl also depends on the grape variety. Swirling your wine releases aromas and with a bit of science enhances the flavour, so the wider the glass the better the swirl. A pinot noir glass should have the widest bowl, needing lots of oxygen; it also needs a slightly turned out rim for aroma direction and really intensify the and understand the taste. Whereas the Bordeaux glass is best for full bodied, heavy wines like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlots. Being one of tallest glasses, this help direct the wine to the back of the mouth.

LOWBALL/TUMBLER/ON THE ROCKS GLASS Short glass which old about 6 to 8 ounces of liquid. Its thick sturdy base helps when muddling ingredients like lemon and lime at the bottom. The highball is debatably a step down from a sling glass, which itself is a simplified hurricane glass. The hurricane glass has a similar shape, although with more of a curvy silhouette. Originally invented in New Orleans to push through leftover rum supplies in a sweet cocktail actually called a Hurricane, it has since developed into a beautiful vase for fun and fancy cocktails like the Gin Sling, Vodka Soda, Bloody Mary.

food MARTINI GLASS Stemmed to keep the beverage cold, martini glasses have a wide opening for sipping only and allowing maximum aroma. Modern versions of the glass include the rounder Coupe glass making the martini shape a bit unfashionable; but a Martini is not a Martini unless it’s in a martini glass. The size of the martini glass is important too and shouldn’t be much bigger than 7 ounces, any larger and it’ll warm up too quickly, it’s even suggested you keep martini glasses in a freezer, so they are really chilled when it comes to happy hour. Gin and Vodka Martinis, the Margarita, Manhattan and Cosmopolitan are regulars of the martini glass. Coupes can also be used for Martinis and Margaritas, but it’s never the same.

CHAMPAGNE GLASSES: FLUTES, COUPES/SAUCERS OR TULIPS From the 1600s champagne was always served in round coupe glasses but in the 1950s fashion changed and people realised that elongated flutes retained carbonation by having less exposed surface area. Tulip glasses are a kind of mix of the two.

BRANDY SNIFTER OR BALLOON This glass is very much ‘bigger is better’ looks wise, as the larger it seems the more luxurious it appears. Great for aged spirits like the cognac and cocktails and obviously Brandys. The Snifter has a history of being known to serve liquors that are ever so slightly warmed; the lack of stem does this automatically by making the drinker hold the bowl thereby warming the brandy and releasing aromas.

PILSENER GLASS Although each and every beer claim to have a perfect glass to drink from, a safe option is the pilsener. Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean you have to drink from a stubby – shout yourself some stylish pilsener glasses and enjoy the enhanced flavour. The shape of the glass helps keep a strong head on the beer which holds the scents at the top of the glass under your nose. Generally, a pilsener glass holds just under a pint, but when you’re at home there’s no need to wait for a refill.

Easy-peasy honey, mint and rosemary marinated lamb shanks BY GRAY’S MODERN MEATS

ou simply can’t go wrong with these succulent lamb shanks. The meat is full of flavour and the bone marrow adds to the richness of the sauce. Shanks are a tough cut and they need time to cook. You cannot overcook them – all that happens is the meat falls off the bone when you serve it. If the meat isn’t tender, it’s not done yet, add more liquid and keep cooking. Tip: make sure you have a cooking vessel that will fit your shanks You can buy plain shanks at Gray’s Modern Meats but if you don’t have time for fancy sauces, pick up some of Gray’s delicious honey, mint and rosemary marinated lamb shanks. With all the hard work done all you just have to do is put them (and any excess marinade) in a slow cooker or in the oven (at 140-150 degrees) for approximately three hours. The lamb will create its own juices but if you like them saucy feel free to add a little water, wine or stock. Once cooked, place shanks on a bed of mashed potato, drizzle with juices and serve with greens: beans, peas, asparagus, brussels sprouts or snow peas.

Strawberry shortcake Winter in Queensland is a great time for citrus fruits, apples, rhubarb and also strawberries.

here are so many ways to enjoy fresh strawberries including straight from the punnet or with a sneaky dash of Cointreau and icing sugar. Strawberry shortcake is a classic family favourite and this recipe makes them individually to taste.

INGREDIENTS 185g butter, chopped, at room temperature 155g (3/4 cup) caster sugar 1 egg 1 tsp vanilla bean paste 225g (1 1/2 cups) plain flour, sifted 75g (1/2 cup) self-raising flour, sifted 1 tbs custard powder 1-2 tbs milk 3 x 200ml carton Bulla Vanilla Flavoured Thick Cream, lightly whipped 500g punnet fresh strawberries from Betros Brothers hulled,

thinly sliced Optional extra: strawberries blitzed with sugar to taste, as a drizzle (feel free to add Cointreau or other flavours)

METHOD Step 1: Preheat oven to 160Â°C/140Â°C fan forced. Line three baking trays with non-stick baking paper. Draw eighteen 7.5cm-diameter circles on paper, allowing room for spreading. Step 2: Use electric beaters to beat the butter and sugar in a bowl until pale and creamy. Beat in the egg and vanilla. Transfer mixture to a large bowl. Fold in the flours, custard powder and milk, alternately, until just smooth. Step 3: Divide the mixture evenly among the circles. Use a pallet knife to spread to the edges. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until pale golden. Set aside on the trays to cool. Step 4: Place a shortcake on each serving plate. Top with desired amount of cream, strawberries and repeat layers as you wish. Optional: drizzle sauce over stack. Serves six. or St Ursula’s College students Flora Higham and Emily McErlean, going to school is so much more than simply learning the standard Queensland curriculum. Last year, the school introduced ‘Ignite’: a special program aimed at assisting students to develop ‘passion projects’ around any area of interest, and also by providing access to industry experts for advice. With Hayley Grabham and Steve Brodrick mentoring five lessons each fortnight, participants have projects around topics such animation, history, 3D printing, music tutorials and more. This year, Grade 9 student Emily is continuing her coding journey from 2019. “Last year I decided I wanted to learn the basics of coding, which I had never done before – and it was something really different. “I learnt python coding and at the end I coded a game to show that I had learnt it,” Emily says. “This year I wanted to take the skills I had learnt last year and put it into something more physical, so a robot or something, and so I decided to learn how to build robots and then code them.” For first-timer Flora (Grade 8), discovering a passion for writing was recent as well. “I actually only found out I enjoyed writing in Year 7 when I had

Flora is also incorporating a clever narrative device where the reader doesn’t know the gender of the main character for most of the book – meaning anyone can identify with them. “I’ve never really been a down-to-earth person, so I guess it’s all the ideas that are inside my head coming out onto the page,” Flora says of her inspiration for the book. It’s clear that both girls are passionate about their chosen area, also expressing an interest to continue learning and/or undertake a future career in their fields. University or TAFE?

niversity and TAFE are both tertiary education facilities, but which one should you chose to learn with and why? In days gone by, university was the place to go if you wanted a profession: think doctor, lawyer, engineer, accountant, etc, and TAFE or college was the home of trades; so builders, plumbers, mechanics, hairdressers. Although this is still true to some degree, there are a lot more opportunities for students wanting to study, with TAFE offering diplomas and advanced diplomas and more study paths available through university. There are several career paths that don’t have a definitive tertiary education facility – careers such as nursing, IT and business can be gained at either institution. TAFE offers more practical experience, classroom-based, active and involved. University is less personalised, and often self-managed, so students are expected to complete more independent study. The few things you need to consider before starting tertiary study are finances, study lengths and prerequisites or assumed knowledge. Studying at a uni can cost from $20,000 to more than $100,000, which can really determine whether university is the way to go. TAFE, on the other hand, can cost between $100 and $10,000.

Although this might seem like the affordable option TAFEs don’t often offer scholarships and reduced fees, which universities tend to have available. Fortunately, in Australia, students have the option of HECS-HELP (Higher Education Contribution Scheme) which is a government loan which is to be repaid once the student earns more than around $45,000 or more in a financial year. The length a course might take at TAFE and university is also vastly different. TAFE can sit anywhere from a few days or weeks to three years. University courses are often three-plus years, some taking up to six to complete. Lastly, it can be tedious to be accepted into a university course, as they often require a specific high-school result or prior learning. Sometimes TAFE is a good starting point for future acceptance into a university, but it ultimately depends on the study path you want to take. The benefit of tertiary education is endless – be it better career opportunities, employment rate or a chance to broaden your skills and knowledge, tertiary education should always be considered.

her why styling is so important. “It’s all about creating a ‘wow’ and, with first impressions, you only have one opportunity to do this,” Helen says. “It assists with the sale in the first 30 days, which we know the majority of the market sees a new property in and an extremely high percentage of my properties sell in that time frame. It also takes the guesswork for buyers out of the placement/size of furniture.” To achieve the perfect look, Helen works closely with stylists Lucy Osborn and Tonita Coppard from Outside the Square Projects. Together, they work out where to place furniture so that it is visually pleasing, makes the best use of the space; and photographs well. Most importantly, they create a space that buyers can see themselves living in – they create a lifestyle. “Styled properties always look better maintained and have a calm quality to them when done professionally,” Lucy explains. “The styling generally happens the day prior to the photos being taken or the same afternoon.” Tonita added that professional stylists have access to several furniture suppliers; as well as a small supply of their own pieces and accessories. “Using furniture and accessories that are ‘on trend’ shows buyers how they can buy a property that is dated but style it so it looks modern and current (and update it when they can afford to do so),” she says.

difficult conversation to have with owners. “The only problem is that not all agents are brave enough to recommend styling for fear of offending the vendor and losing the listing,” Lucy says. “Also, once an agent has discussed commission and advertising costs it can be very difficult to ask a vendor to part with more money. “Styling can start at $2500 if there is a hiring component but is often a lot more. “Agents who have their properties styled can inform clients of the benefits and the real value that a $2500, (min) investment can bring to their final price. “However, the simple answer to why you should have your property styled is that it will stand out from its competitors and get a better sale price in a shorter time.” Agent Helen agrees. “The majority of the time it (styling) guarantees a great price in a good time frame,” she said. “Furniture takes the buyers’ eyes off all the little imperfections in rooms that are furnished and helps create the emotional experience as buyers see themselves moving in.” So, with the majority of us on a tight budget, what rooms should we concentrate on to create the ‘wow’ factor? “A good way of keeping the budget in check is to style the living, dining, kitchen, outdoor area and the master bedroom,” Tonita suggests. “Generally, bedrooms are straight forward. It’s only if they are small that it is wise to show buyers that you can fit in a bed and a bedside table. “Statistics show that the majority of people cannot visualise where to place furniture, so if a buyer is left wondering they could easily move on to another property.

If a property is empty, then styling is an easy option according to Tonita. “But, if you are still living at the property this is not an option, so it is worth investing to have the stylist guiding the vendor on what to take out and store away and what linen to use to present the bedrooms so that they fit in with the styled rooms,” she said. “Real estate agents use photographers to best photograph properties, so why not use a stylist to give advice and assistance to best present a property to the market,” Helen concluded.

Wonderful winter greens BY DEB AITCHESON FROM THE CHILLI PATCH

ith their robust flavours, beautiful textures and high nutrient content, these greens are a versatile addition to the winter kitchen. The best way to enjoy them is to grow your own and then just snip fresh leaves as you need them.

SO WHAT EXACTLY ARE WINTER GREENS? Sure we can buy most greens (such as lettuce) all year round but a few greens are at their peak during winter: Rocket – wild, dragons tongue and salad; Tatsoi; Endive; Chard; Mustard Greens; Chicory; Komatsuma; English spinach; Sorrel; Kale as well as other cruciferous vegetables.

GROW THEM: In pots or in beds along with vegies, flowers and other herbs. Just make sure they get around six hours of sunshine a day.

NUTRITION: Bursting with Vitamin A, C and K as well as antioxidants, fibre and loads of minerals including Calcium, Magnesium and Manganese.

FLAVOURS: The robust flavours of winter greens are what make them so special. Try lemony Sorrels, Peppery rockets, spicy Chicory, Endive, Tatsoi and Mustard. If you prefer a milder flavour, snip the leaves when they are young. The flavours can become much stronger as you store the cut leaves – so eat them fresh.

SERVING: Preparation is different for each family of greens and it’s worth checking before you start cooking. However, for most, you can tuck them into sandwiches; chop and add to omelettes, risottos, pastas, soups and stews; toss in a fresh side salad; sautée in a stir fry; simply steam them and of course you can roast Kale for healthy chips. Kale chips: wash, break into pieces and remove fibrous stems; arrange on a baking tray, spray with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Roast in a slow oven (around 100C) until desired crunchiness. Morning walks – Ravensbourne Shearer Road at Ravensbourne is one of our all-time favourite country roads. It’s so worth the effort to go there for your next morning constitutional.

f you like the idea of a country road that winds past farm houses, grazing cattle and expansive views of green hills that tumble into the wild blue yonder – well this is the one. To get to Shearer Road drive to Hampton (about 30 mins from

the Toowoomba CBD or 20 minutes from Highfields) and then turn onto the Esk Hampton Road and continue for another ten minutes (11km) to the start of Shearer Road at Ravensbourne. It really is worth the drive! The first 700m of Shearer Road is a steady uphill climb known to the locals as “heart attack hill” – you might also call it “thigh master” because it will certainly get those quads pumping! It’s up to you if you walk this bit or drive to the intersection of National Park Road which flattens right out. “The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Music …” Turn right and get ready for some breathtaking scenery. It’s so beautiful you will want to stop, take photos, do some stretches, meditate and maybe even sing. It really is a bit Swiss! The walk to Grehan Road is 2.6km and will take around an hour depending on how fit you are up that first hill. However, if you turn left into National Park Road you’ll venture into a cool dark forest that eventually meets up with some of the Ravensbourne National Park trails (you might need to pack a lunch for this one – at least some scroggin). Whether you choose a short walk or a long one, you will most certainly deserve a lovely coffee and cake afterwards perhaps at The Woods at Ravensbourne, or Emeraude at Hampton, Colours san Cris at Cabaralah or The Chocolate Cottage at Highfields.

arental separation can turn a child’s life upside down. Generally, separated parents have good intentions to shield their children from conflict. Sometimes however, children can feel as though they are the rope in a tug of war battle. Conflict between parents can be as obvious as physical altercations, yelling or name-calling. More subtle conflict can be overhearing nasty comments about the other parent, seeing Mum roll her eyes when Dad calls or Dad suggesting his household is better than Mum’s household. As a coping mechanism, some children lie about what happens in the other household to prevent conflict or to not upset a parent. For example, if Dad has a new partner, a child may describe the new partner to Mum as mean and nasty, when in fact she is not, just so Mum won’t be upset. Some children feel they have to say negative things about the other parent to receive affection. Over time, these children can become so desperate for acceptance they will say and do anything to appease people in their life – to the extent they begin to engage in dangerous activities.

Where parents cannot communicate at all, children can feel it is their responsibility to organise time arrangements. This may be appropriate for children who are older teenagers; young children should just be left to be children and not be burdened. Healthy disagreements where conflict is resolved without violence or name-calling can teach children how to appropriately resolve conflict. Exposure to frequent high conflict between parents can have an enormous negative impact upon a child’s mental health and can impact relationships they have with other people when they grow older. Unresolved high conflict can teach children that the only way to resolve conflict is to name call and shove the other person. It is crucial after a separation to let children be children, and not involve them in parental conflict. Specialist advice can be obtained for families who cannot resolve high conflict, including therapy and legal assistance, to create a brighter future.

Whale facts Whale is the term given to any large cetacean. Smaller cetaceans include dolphins and porpoises. he whale watching season runs from May to November each year as Humpback Whales make their way up and down Australia’s east coast. The best time to see the whales heading north is between May and July. They travel all the way from their feeding ground in the

Antarctica to have their babies in the warm waters off the Great Barrier Reef and then from August to November the pods head back down south with their calves. According to Associate Professor Michael Noad of the University of Queensland’s School of Veterinary Science, the Humpback Whale species has recovered since commercial whaling ceased in 1962. “Our observations indicate the east Australian humpback whales are doing well, averaging a 10.9 per cent increase per annum,” he said. So with a greater population of breeding whales, whale watching tours are thriving especially on the Gold Coast where there are several local companies taking boats out each day. The tours usually go for two or three hours and most guarantee whale sightings. In addition to whales you might also see dolphins, sharks, turtles and sea birds.

hile we were all locked down at home, the Granite Belt’s vignerons weren’t wasting time. Drought ravaged vineyards have been lovingly recovered, cellar doors have had a lick of paint and the precious few grapes salvaged from vintage 2020 have been turned into some truly remarkable wine. The first few weeks after our visitors returned were hectic as everyone got used to operating under COVID Safe Industry plans. We’re looking healthy BY ROS BURTON PRINCIPAL – THE REAL ESTATE PEOPLE LAST weekend I was lucky enough to escape to the Sunshine Coast (finally) for a much-needed break. While there, I was able to catch up with some friends who own a beautiful house backing onto a canal and inevitably our conversation turned to the local real estate market. From all reports it’s booming and as we drove home and saw the many new developments popping up around the area, I’d have to agree. Without a doubt, the massive University Hospital precinct around Birtinya/Kawana has been a huge catalyst in the explosion of the area. Critical infrastructure brings jobs, the staff filling these jobs need accommodation and communities instantly grow as a result. As the population increases, so do services and industry, shopping centres are needed, parklands and leisure facilities follow as well. It’s great urban progression and everyone benefits. You’re probably thinking: “Yeah, but that’s the coast, it’s different here in Toowoomba”. Is it?

Don’t forget, we have our very own Birtinya in waiting. Darling Downs Health is producing a business case for a new Toowoomba Hospital to be built and that’s extremely exciting news for us all, – especially for the suburbs of Rockville, Wilsonton Heights and Cranley. Pending government approval, the hospital will stand on the old Baillie Henderson site and this will bring huge gentrification to the area. As I said, jobs bring people to fill the roles – professional people. So, whether they’re buying or renting in the area, they’ll want a certain level of accommodation. This means quality homes will be in high demand and extensive renovations will begin transforming neighbourhoods. Knock downs and new builds may become common. I’m certainly looking forward to the turning of that first sod for the new hospital. Not only will it be the green light for more world-class health care in Toowoomba, it will also signal a new era of metamorphous for the north western corner of our great city.

Are your tyres in tip top shape? The school holidays are upon us, and with the easing of restrictions cars are returning to the roads.

ridgestone, Carrington Road Toowoomba, are urging motorists to keep their families safe on the road these holidays by checking the condition of their tyres. When you consider your car is only connected to the road by the equivalent of one handprint of tread from each tyre, it really puts into perspective how important tyres are to your family’s safety. Tyres should be checked regularly, especially when you have such precious cargo - your family. Worn tyres give less control over your vehicle and increase the time it takes to stop when braking, so it’s crucial that tyres are well maintained and in good condition. Make sure there’s enough tread on your tyres, you can assess this by checking the tread depth indicators. You might not notice these indicators when your tyres are new, but as these wear down these tread indicators or bars will be more visible. These depth indicator bars are flat and run perpendicular to the tread and if you’re able to see more than one or two you should organise getting some fresh tyres. Each groove must be at least 1.8mm, but if you find yourself driving regularly on wet surfaces, in this predicted season, it’s best that the depth be twice as much. Even look for signs of irregular tread wear as this might indicate mechanical problems elsewhere. Ensure the tyre pressure is set to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended specifications, which can be found on your vehicle’s tyre placard. The tyre pressure can be easily checked and topped up at most petrol stations. If your tyre pressure (PSI) has dropped by more than 25 per cent, there is a higher chance of a tyre-related accident occurring. Making sure each of your tyres are fitted with valve caps will make sure the air is where it should be. Make sure to check the spare tyre - is it inflated and in good condition. Be sure to check your jack is functioning and in place. Lastly, regularly check for small cuts in the tyre sidewalls and any other foreign objects, such as nails and tacks, in the tread. Live music to appreciate BY KATHERINE SAMPSON

hat do Rosalie House, Fitzy’s on Church, The Toowoomba City Golf Club and some Weddings have in common? The wonderful musician, James Ryle, as their entertainment of course. The 21-year-old artist is really down to earth and cares about his audience rather than views on Spotify and can play for five hours at a time just for the enjoyment of the listeners. The young musician loves the art and has been passionate about music for as long as he can remember. “In grade three I started playing the viola, and did that for about eight years,” James told Style, admitting he probably can’t play the viola anymore. “After that I started getting into guitar and singing and kept doing that ever since,” he says. He began a bachelor’s degree in music for a few years before putting that on hold to ‘enhance the craft.’ A short while turned into a year and has continued on since which has allowed James really make a name for himself, and do what he really loves which is as simple as strumming a guitar and singing. It takes years of dedicating and of course a bit of talent to be noticed and find work as a musician,

but through dedication and hard work James has made a name for himself in the region. Although you’ll mostly hear James jamming out a cover of Bruce Springsteen to Dean Lewis, you might catch him sneaking in an original of his own. Whilst he doesn’t upload his original pieces to the internet in any way, James’ gets his songs out live and through his gigs, which is particularly special when the crowd claps. Performing predominantly live for venues and events, the challenge of no response can be sometimes heartbreaking and demotivating for a musician. “You can have a gig and get nothing back from the audience whatsoever and it makes you think you’ve done horribly,” he says, noting that for long session of up to five hours, lack of response will make the job seem a bit insignificant. “And then you can then get told afterwards (from the venue) we got heaps of compliments and that it was lovely,” James says. “You just you just learn to appreciate it, but it takes like one person to clap after a song and then everyone will join in, and then it becomes a culture.” With the restriction slowly easing, and a light at the end of the tunnel for live music to resume, it shouldn’t be too long before you catch a glimpse of James playing one of your favourites around town.

Joanna Davies chats to Style

Highlights of your artistic life? A few years ago, Simon (my husband) and I travelled to stay with cousins in Rome. We worked our way around Italy for six weeks eating, drinking, and painting. I sold all the pieces while there, so the holiday ended up being free! Tell us a little about yourself I grew up in Brookfield, Queensland and at the moment am living in Fig Tree Pocket in a beautiful house on the river which we are renting whilst we are building again at Brookfield. Can’t wait to get back there. Describe your style? My style is loose, free, and full of energy. Figurative with a touch of impressionist. I like to use a lot of oil paint and my work is textural and lively.

What inspires you? I’m inspired by things around me. Nature, children, light and colour. When did you start painting? I’ve been drawing forever. My dad was a painter, so it always seemed like a valid thing to do. I’ve been painting professionally for close to 10 years now. How has it evolved and what has inﬂuenced this? I’m constantly evolving, and I am influenced every time I walk outside. I am just about to take a tour with Simon around Queensland, visiting all my school friends on their properties. I am looking forward to painting some large-scale landscapes of this beautiful country.

Why do you enjoy painting? Painting makes me feel alive. I am so lucky that I get to do it for a living and can be lost for days in my studio. I never feel lonely painting, but I can become a bit of a hermit. What do you like about Toowoomba? The open skies, fresh air and beautiful old homes. What is your dream goal or project? I love painting really large pieces. My dream is to paint huge impressionist Australian landscapes full of life and the colours of Australia for someone to hang in their home and immerse themselves in. I am always trying to get people to go bigger as there is no such thing as a painting that is too big.
