IT’S TIME TO SPARKLE Social distancing isn’t all bad. In our efforts to “keep connected” we’ve had to be creative with online and virtual possibilities. Suddenly we are able to “attend” events, competitions and classes all from the comfort of home. In a way, it’s actually broadened our outlook.

Toowoomba folks have jumped on board this brave new online world and one organisation leading the charge is the ever resourceful Toowoomba Hospital Foundation.

The Foundation’s recent online champagne tasting fundraiser highlighted the fun of online events and proved that you can still be connected ... even when you’re apart.

THE FUNDRAISER Toowoomba Hospital Foundation is masterful at creating events that bring the community together whilst raising money for medical equipment and services at Toowoomba Base Hospital.

T

hirty champagne enthusiasts from around Toowoomba recently sat at home in front of their computers with a bottle of Royal Riviera, French Champagne, a bottle of Wearing Memories Prosecco and a delicious antipasto platter from Wellbean Co. So easy! No deciding what to wear, no transport to consider, no locking the house and leaving the dog behind.

All the participants had to do was log on to their computer and link up with Toowoomba Hospital Foundation’s Alison Kennedy who was joined by Kiron Barui and Kiron’s business partner Sara who all the way from her home in France.

Amidst the giggles and nibbles there was some serious conversation and a lot of useful champagne information to take away.

“We’d like to do another one,” said Kiron. “Maybe about pairing food with champagne.”

THE CREATIVE Kiron Barui is one of Toowoomba’s quiet achievers. She is eternally loyal to the city she calls home, a great advocate for “buy local” and a generous benefactor.

orn in Ghan and raised in Rockhampton, Kiron Barui studied teaching at uni in Brisbane before pursuing a career in special education. She furthered her knowledge with a Masters Degree but had a career break to raise her own children. It was during this break that she found another calling: one that she had never dreamt of.

“Ever since my wedding day I have loved champagne,” said Kiron.

“Perhaps because it brings back the happy memories of that day.

“After that, I would collect the caps from happy bottles popped and write the occasion and memory on the back and would wear the wire muselet on my finger to help me remember the taste of the champagne and the life of the memory

as it unfolds.

“But Wearing Memories actually came out of the floods in 2011 when my friend and I decided that life was too short to cellar all our champagne so we started to pop the bottles instead of keeping them for special occasions. It was in Toowoomba in 2011 that Wearing Memories was born.”

ara Ramirez and Kiron Barui are two champagne sisters who came together through their love of bubbles and the ocean – both Mediterranean and Pacific.

“We met at a wine show in Milan. I was there with my Wearing Memories jewellery and Sara, who lives in Monaco, was there with her brand of champagne.

“Sara and I clicked immediately and she asked me to join her in making our own champagne.”

There was no way that Kiron had expected that to happen! But before she knew it, Royal Riviera was born.

Kiron is completing Level 3 of the internationally recognised course offered by the Wine and Spirit Education Trust, but back then she it was her connoisseur’s palate that was recognised as a valuable asset in the partnership.

“I believe in artisan manufacturing, heirloom quality and pieces that will last so they can be passed down from mother to daughter,” she said.

“We developed the recipe to create a champagne that we know is the perfect mix,” she said. “It’s dry, with beautiful mouth feel and full of flavour to complement the food we love, especially cake.”

The Chronicle Garden Competition has been part of the Toowoomba community since 1949 but this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it will run under a “virtual” format that will showcase our city to the world.

OF COURSE YOU CAN DRAW! YOU JUST NEED TO LEARN HOW! Drawing and painting are skills that can be taught and the more you practise, the better you get. A great way to build your skills is to join a group and practise, practise, practise. In the days of COVID, the best way to do this is online.

ocal artist and art teacher, Anna Bartlett, says it’s her mission in life to share the joy of drawing and painting.

“I believe the best way to learn painting is to paint, that the only wasted paint is the paint left in the tube, and that art should be all about encouragement, not pressure,” she said.

With this joyous philosophy in mind, it’s easy to see why Anna’s “Shiny Happy” drawing and painting classes have been a huge hit in Toowoomba. Pre-COVID she was running live classes and retreats as well as offering over 20 online art classes alongside a growing membership of her “Paint Along of the Month Club”.

“Once COVID hit I took everything online and haven’t stopped!” she said.

“I began with free, weekly ‘Shiny Happy 08

Drink and Draw’ sessions, via Facebook Groups – basically to help cheer people up. Then I added more online sketching classes to my catalogue and hosted private and corporate events with people around the world via Zoom and Youtube.

“The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with one woman telling me that she lived in a hotspot in the US, and only really stopped crying to do my online classes. I had people joining me from Ireland, Spain, Canada, India and South Africa, as well as the US, UK, New Zealand and locally.

“It’s a fantastic way to learn a new skill that helps you notice things you’re grateful for, and also productively takes your mind off the stresses of daily life.

Ahead of the 2020 Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers, residents will be invited to apply to participate in Garden for Good via thechronicle.com.au.

Gardeners will be asked to submit photos of their garden and tell us what is unique and special about it. They will also be asked to name a charity they would like to support and why.

From these applications, ten gardens will be selected and featured in a COVID-19 safe virtual showcase.

The interactive website will feature the top ten gardener profiles through immersive video content, beautiful photography and engaging stories to entertain and captivate site visitors.

The program concept, which includes cultivating goodwill and kindness in the community, also allows the public to participate by donating funds to the featured gardeners’ charity of choice. This component of Garden for Good brings the community together to raise much needed funds for charitable organisations in our region in these uncertain times.

EVENTING ONLINE

Typically, entering any equestrian event involves years of training, loads of horse dollars, time off work, driving long distances, accommodation and all for a few minutes in the arena: now that’s commitment! But it’s also a passion, and one that not even COVID can stop.

ith COVID restrictions in place, equestrian events, like many others, have been cancelled indefinitely. In an effort to keep their competitive edge, riders are entering “online events” which they can do from the comfort of their own home (well, as long as they have an arena in the backyard).

Dr Barbara Ryan is a crisis communications consultant and lecturer in public relations at the University of Southern Queensland.

With a life-long passion for dressage, she currently at Medium level, which is the fourth level of nine, on the way to Grand Prix.

Barbara has been a regular competitor throughout south-east Queensland with her mare, ten year old thoroughbred/ warmblood, Polka Dot, also known as Lottie. Lottie is a warmblood/thoroughbred bred for eventing , with Australian champion dressage stallion Regardez Moi on her father's side and Salute bloodlines on her mother's (that’s handy dressage breeding in Australia). Lottie is beautiful, clever, talented and a dream to take to a competition.

When you have a horse of this calibre, you do not want to be sitting idle. Thank goodness for online competitions! With a full size arena on her property, north of Toowoomba, all Barbara has to do is saddle up and ask a family member to film her routine.

“I’ve entered three online events so far this year,” said Barb “And I’ve learned so much from each one – it’s brilliant. I’ve probably learned more than I would from a regular competition.”

The video is uploaded to a website and then the actual judging is live-streamed.

“In a normal competition we are given a score sheet with notes and then we wait several hours for the results,” said Barb.

“But with live streaming we can hear the judge’s commentary as they review video entries, which we can also see, so the comments are matching the movements".

“Hearing commentary from judges such as Roger Fitzhardinge (national judge and Grand Prix competitor) has made a huge V1 - TCHE01Z01ST

difference for me and I’ve also learned from hearing his commentary about other entrants.

“We are seeing eight or nine entries in Medium each time and they come from all over Australia - not just the riders I’d normally see from the south-east corner.

“The prelim and novice classes are probably the most popular online which is really fantastic because it’s such a great way for beginners to learn. It's terrific for those who can’t get to competitions becuase they are too far away, or can't afford to travel.”

“The prizes are fantastic too and include lessons with two times Olympian Lyndal Oatley and lots of equestrian gear.”

Barbara says that the only downside of online competitions is that the scores don’t count towards real “points” for annual state/national dressage finals. That process is a lot more structured and requires strict rules with standard arenas, multiple judges, and similar conditions for all competitors and so on.

Who knows when the regular competition will start up again but in the meantime, equestrians have no excuse not to train and perfect their skills.

Barbara came to serious dressage training quite late, and reckons her trainer, Jen Bucknell from Felton, has done well to break many of the 30 years of bad riding habits.

"We still have a lot of work to do, and these online competitions are great motivators."

Plus she and Lottie get to show off their new dressage outfits complete with diamantes.

Building confidence, being sustainable and reducing waste one garment at a time

argaret Adam Sewing School is one of those warm, welcoming spaces where you know people are thriving and you want to join them. There’s a sense of fun and purpose as students of all ages create bespoke garments.

It’s not about fashion.

It’s more about building confidence in our own expression of style and developing the skills to achieve it. And then there’s sustainability.

Margaret believes we can all do our bit to reduce waste and taking a sustainable view of our wardrobes is a good place to start.

“Work with what you already have before you go and buy more clothes,” she said. “You can alter, fix and fit garments over

and over. You can mend, shorten, lengthen, add or remove darts and fine tune shoulder seams for a flattering fit.

“You can also revamp, restyle and remodel by removing or adding decorative trims and embellishments.”

One of Margaret’s students, Andrea, is a great example. She recently bought a pair of cute overalls online only to find the fit wasn’t great. To return the garment would cost too much in postage. So Andrea went to Margaret to see what could be done.

Some clever unstitching and the addition of a few extra centimetres and voila!

“I’m a good ‘op shopper’,” Andrea said. “I like to experiment with my style and update garments to suit. Margaret is amazing, always willing to help and make the process fun. Her advice is based on decades of experience.

“The Sewing School is a lovely friendly space and I like that all generations get together, share ideas and chat.”

Andrea also gets ideas by following Refashionista and Material Girl on Instagram Margaret said her main purpose was to help people feel more confident and that’s what her “Wardrobe Therapy Sessions” are all

about.

“Many people need help in clearing out their wardrobes: removing garments they don’t wear and rediscovering outfits they’d forgotten about.

“I go shopping with men and women – to op shops as well as stores. I help them build a wardrobe they love,” she said.

“Sometimes we have to tweak the garments to suit, but that’s half the fun.”

“People think sewing is easy: you just buy a pattern and some fabric and it will turn out OK but there’s so much more to it. You have to take into account your body shape, the fabric and how it goes with the pattern.

“I teach people how fabrics work – and this is based on my own sewing experience!

“Sometimes you make a garment and then you have to go back and tinker with it until you get the perfect fit or look that you are after.

“Once you have tweaked the pattern to suit, you can keep making that garment over and over again in different fabrics for different seasons. And you will always love the garments because you know they are a perfect fit for you.”

You may love your light- or mediumwash jeans, but here’s a little secret: dark wash looks more up-market and expensive. This makes them ideal for dressing up or down, and you can even pair them with a classy top and heels for a smart casual event. The waist and cut is ultimately up to you, but Amanda says most women look incredible in a good pair of skinny jeans.

You can’t go past Kmart’s white tees for this one, Amanda says. They’re cheap, work with anything, and have ethical cotton practises. A white t-shirt can be dressed-up with black pants and a blazer, or go casual with jeans and sneakers.

BUTTON-UP SHIRT

This piece is a life-saver for functions and events, so make sure you pick the right style and fit. While you technically could buy an entry-level priced dress, it will probably be worth investing a little more so the dress’s hemlines and tailoring are more fine. The fit will ultimately be up to your individual style and body shape, however Amanda recommends one with a fitted waist or belt regardless, to add shape to your waistline.

WHITE T-SHIRT

A trench coat is Amanda’s go-to for the average woman’s wardrobe, but a smart wrap coat or classy peacoat also hit the spot. Ultimately, the type you chose will depend on your personal shape and style, but consider one with either a belt or cinched waist to accentuate those curves. Remember that you’re also not restricted to black and neutrals – if you’ll get wear out of it, go for that colour!

Particularly with our Toowoomba weather, boots are a must for your winter wardrobe. Ankle boots have the added benefit of not being too long and bulky for those days you just need to slip something on your feet, and they go with virtually any outfit. I love that the fashion industry is currently encouraging women to embrace their different body types while expressing individual personality and style. And it doesn’t always have to be girly.

Feminine streetwear is breaking boundaries this season and you’ll see some really masculine elements in the mix such as combat pants and boots. With the return of special events and social gatherings, it’s no surprise to see girls restocking their make-up bags again. We stopped by Hooper Centre Pharamcy to see what’s trending for August, and we were not disappointed with this stunning bold blue look.

o begin, we prepped and primed the skin with Inglot Pink Primer. This added luminosity to the model’s skin, it also ensured that we had a smooth and hydrated base for the makeup to sit on.

After priming it was time for the eyes. A carefully selected range of colours were used to create this look; Inglot EyeShadows 283, 289, 292 and 372. These colours allowed the models gorgeous brown eyes to POP! Eyeshadow was closely followed by Inglot AMC Eyeliners 67 and 87.

Inglot YSM Foundation Shade 65 was applied next. This gave the model’s skin a healthy glow that set the colour base for the skin.

Inglot Under eye concealer shade 92, was then applied to cover any little imperfections.

After glowing-up the face, we used Inglot HD Lip tint (26) to give the lips some colour.

Last but not least we finished with a swipe of Inglot Lash Enhancer Mascara and glued on some Ardell Remy Lashes (781) with Duo Quick Set Striplash Glue.

And that’s it!

BABIES, BOXING AND BUILDING DREAMS THE GOOD DOCTOR FROM TOOWOOMBA Dr Lanziz Homar is a Toowoomba based Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, and a man of many talents. Dr Homar recently appeared on Toowoomba’s WIN News to talk about his passion for Calmbirth, an Australian childbirth preparation programme designed to enhance the birthing experience.

Calmbirth education, is a 12-hour, face-toface antenatal program designed to help parents-to-be prepare for birth emotionally, mentally and physically. Dr Homar conducts the classes alongside Calmbirth midwife, Sally Crothers.

Sally has been a midwife and childbirth educator for over 25 years. Currently she works at St Vincent’s Hospital Maternity Unit and also at Dr Homar’s Obstetric practice. She believes that knowledge is

power. As the only obstetrician –midwife team delivering Calmbirth education in Australia, Sally believes that, hopefully they are paving the way for the future.

Calmbirth is designed to encourage natural delivery as much as possible, but also prepares you emotionally to handle unexpected medical intervention when necessary. It also teaches your partner how to support you emotionally through the birthing process, and how to be your ‘guardian of space’ during pregnancy, labour, and birth.

quick Google search, or a chat to his close friends, and you will quickly paint a picture of Dr Lanziz Homar that is almost too good to be true, but trust me, he is the real deal.

Not shy of media attention, the good doctor regularly features in newspapers for taking part in sporting and charity events. Five years ago, following the death of local boxer Brayd Smith, Dr Homar entered a boxing bout to raise awareness for the establishment of a neurosurgery department in Toowoomba, and if that is not enough, he regularly draws attention for his charitable work with the not-for-profit, Australian Doctors for Africa (ADFA).

ST VINCENT’S POWERS TO 100 YEARS OF SERVING ITS MISSION When a young woman from County Cork responded to the very real social disadvantage in nineteenth century Ireland, nobody would have believed that a hospital in regional Australia in the 21st century would be a part of that dream.

ary Aikenhead, foundress of the Sisters of Charity religious order, took a leap of faith and the mission that she embarked upon is alive and well at St Vincent’s Private Hospital, Toowoomba today.

The hospital’s Mission Executive Mark Copland says one of the hallmarks of the Sisters of Charity was a commitment to people who are poor or vulnerable.

“This year marks a century since the Sisters arrived in the Garden City and we already have plans underway to celebrate the centenary of the hospital in 2022,” Mark said.

“We are proud to be keeping the vision and spirit of Mary Aikenhead alive in regional Southern Queensland”.

Some of us are truly gifted when it comes to stretching and others ... are not. There are a select few girls in our community who devote a lot of time to helping others find their flexibility and now they’ve kindly offered a few simple moves for Style readers.

T

he girls come from the fitness group Pole Angels, and have experience in everything from acrobatics to trapeze, dance and pole fitness.

These stretches are designed for the beginner to advanced. Of course, you might not be able to fully pull off a stretch today; it takes practise!

Maybe in a month, a week or even a few days, you will find yourself with a bit more spring in your step and bend in the body.

Who knows, you might even do the splits!

FRONT SPLITS

The side lunge is a perfect for beginner stretch for achieving the middle splits and straddle forward folds (also known as a pancake stretch). To achieve this stretch, start in a standing position and lower to one side. You want to keep the foot you are balancing on flat on the floor. Alternate between a flexed and pointed foot with the extended leg to achieve a deeper stretch. The more comfortable you feel with this stretch, start opening out the bent leg.

This stretch is excellent for balance and core strength. You should feel it stretch through your hamstrings and hips.

The extended lunge is a position that helps put you in a deep stretch targeting the hip flexor, hamstring, quadriceps and lower back.

To complete this stretch, place your right foot forward with bent knee and move the left leg backwards, placing the knee on the ground.

Slowly push down on your left side until you feel the stretch in your left hip flexor and thigh. You should also feel this in your right thigh and gluteals (bottom).

After a few minutes change sides.

Start slowly and with practice you will improve balance and are on a steady path to achieving a front spilt.

The front splits are an advanced stretch that requires a significant level of flexibility. This stretch can take months to master and must be practised frequently to maintain the level of flexibility required. A good start is to focus on the beginner and intermediate stretches and slowly work your way to a complete front split.

To achieve the front splits, you will need to focus on opening the hips, lower back, hamstrings and quadriceps. Don’t just push yourself into this stretch as it can be detrimental to your muscles, slow and steady finds the splits.

r Ray Fairweather, CEO of St Andrew’s Toowoomba Hospital will retire on Friday 14 August 2020. Ray has been CEO of St Andrew’s for over 20 years and in healthcare for over 48 years. Ray has been the catalyst for significant growth in services and building expansion at St Andrew’s and he is the reason the hospital is what it is today.

Ray has been a true leader and an inspiration to staff, who he knows most by name. Despite the busy nature of his role he will always stop and take the time for a chat to enquire how staff are. We asked Ray a few questions on his pending retirement.

ince it opened eight years ago, owners Ramadan and Linda El Attar have developed a loyal following of regular customers and they have fine-tuned the menu and service to suit.

Ramadan creates all his own spice mixes and marinades from scratch. Most grilled meats are marinated for 24 hours prior to cooking. Everything is cooked fresh to order.

TYPE OF FOOD Authentic, traditional Middle Eastern home-style cooking which includes Turkish, Iranian, Lebanese, Egyptian.

MENU AND DIETARY REQUIREMENTS Nearly all dishes at El Attar are “made to order” so you can talk to the chef about dietary needs. However, the standard menu caters for a wide variety of diets including high protein/low carb; low fat; gluten free; lactose intolerant; vegetarian and vegan.

ATMOSPHERE El Attar is humming on the night we dine in – with appropriate COVID distancing and other regulations in place. We love the Middle Eastern music playing softly in the background and the authentic serving dishes.

ENTREE OR MEZZE We chose a selection of dips served with warm flat bread. Each dip was vastly different and absolutely delicious. Hummus is always a benchmark and this one sets the

bar high – perfect! We also enjoyed garlic dip made with fresh cloves; chilli dip with heat and hint of sweet chutney, yogurt dip with mint and sweet chilli.

We enjoyed the Malfouf – a crispy filo roll filled with haloumi, vegetables and rolled in za’atar spices and the Kibbeh which is a patty filled with seasoned mince in a crispy rice coating. Sambousek is a traditional street food a little like a samosa, empanada or pastie.

El Attar makes a perfect classic Felafel with the right textures and flavours we enjoyed ours with a fresh, crisp Fatoush salad which is sprinkled with crunchy fried bread.

MAIN COURSE Because we were tasting our way through the menu, chef Ramadan gave us a variety of dishes to sample including the signature Tawook – or skewered meat from the grill.

can see why this dish is so popular.

We also enjoyed the thinly sliced grilled meats which are used in the Shawarma wrap along with salad and sauce.

Ramadan’s Egyptian Moussaka is a spicy vegetarian dish with super rich tomato sauce served with rice and flat bread. Oh my!

SOMETHING SWEET After all those vegetables, lean meats and legumes, surely you can squeeze in a little baklava or Turkish delight? Ramadan and Linda make their own sweets from an old family recipe. You want authentic? You got it!

WE FINISHED WITH SOOTHING TEA Ramadan’s own blend of Egyptian Tea and fragrant Hibiscus Tea. A perfect finish to a very healthy and flavourful meal.

We love to support local. We decided early on in our business plan to hire our equipment to do-it-yourselfers and also to other wedding planners and stylists in the area. We have found this to be very successful and we are working with a few event planners who are hiring our products for client events.

PECAN COTTAGE ROLLS Recipe courtesy of Stahmann Farms Toowoomba

INGREDIENTS ► 3 eggs ► ½ cup of Riverside Australian pecans ► 1 small onion ► 1tblspn soy sauce ► 1 cup low fat cottage cheese ► ½ cup finely grated carrot ► ½ cup dry breadcrumbs ► 1 cup minute oats ► 3 sheets puff pastry ► 1tblspn milk METHOD Step 1. Place eggs, pecans, onion, soy sauce and cottage cheese into a food processor and process until fine.

Step 2. Transfer to a large bowl and mix in carrot, breadcrumbs and oats.

Step 3. Cut pastry sheets in half and brush lightly with milk.

Step 4. Divide mixture into six even portions and spoon down one edge of each half sheet. Roll to encose filling.

Step 5. Cut each log into six even lenghts; brush with milk and prick with a fork.

Step 6. Bake in a hot oven (200C) for 15 to 20 minutes or until crisp and golden.

BOEUF BOURGUIGNON Boeuf Bourguignon is a classic French dish. It was traditionally a “peasant” dish using tough cuts of meat but “the king of chefs” Auguste Escoffier made a haute cuisine version in the early 1900s. SEATONFIRE CHILLI CHOCOLATE

Sinfully Delicious Spicy Hot Chocolate INGREDIENTS ► 1 box of your choice Seatonfire Chilli Chocolate ► 4 cups milk (alternative – coconut or almond milk) ► 2 scoops vanilla ice cream ► Optional for adults - Baileys, Sambuca, Rum METHOD Step 1. Bring milk to simmer then remove from heat.

Step 2. Break up your choice of chilli chocolate and pop one piece in your mouth (please don’t chew it)

Step 3. Whisk together until melted and your tongue is tingling.

METHOD Step 1. Cook bacon in a large pot over medium-high heat until browned – reserve some pieces to garnish later.

Step 6. Add in corn starch and full-cream milk or cream by gradually adding small amounts at a time and whisking as you combine. Do so until the mixture has thickened slightly.

Tapenade Pizza

INGREDIENTS ► 435mL water ► 5 – 12.5g yeast ► 25mL Bunnyconnellen Molly family reserve extra virgin olive oil ► 500g good quality 00 bread flour TOPPINGS ► Bunnyconnellen Tournament Tapenade ► A good quality/homemade tomato base ► Mozzarella ► Fresh basil METHOD Step 1. Place water and the yeast in a bowl and dissolve with a spatula.

Step 2. Add the extra virgin olive oil to the water and yeast mixture.

Step 3. Place the flour in another bowl and then add the liquid mixture.

Step 4. Fold the mixture with a plastic spatula until combined and divide the dough pieces into four and quickly mould them into balls.

Step 5. Allow the dough to rest and rise for 30 mins at room temperature.

Step 6. Reshape the dough balls to release any gas, the dough should be velvety and smooth - gently stretch each dough ball onto an oiled tray.

Step 7. Brush the base with some more extra virgin olive oil and pre-cook the base at about 300C for 3 minutes.

Step 8. Remove the base from oven and add your toppings! Top the par-cooked pizza with tomato base, a decent spoonful of Tournament Tapenade and spread with the back of a spoon and add the cheese Step 9. Bake for an additional 3 – 6 minutes.

Step 10. Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil, Bunnyconnellen’s Belissima caramalised balsamic vinegar and top fresh basil prior to serving.

Hazelnut Truffles (Gluten free, dairy free, sugar free & guilt free!)

INGREDIENTS ► 2 cups of hazelnuts ► ¼ cup birch sweetener ► 1 cup almond meal ► 1/3 cup cacao powder ► ¼ cup cacao nibs ► 7 fresh dates ► 1/3 cup maple syrup METHOD Step 1. Add all dry ingredients into a blender and blend until the hazelnuts are fine and everything is thoroughly mixed together.

Step 2. Add the wet ingredients, dates and maple syrup, and blend until combined.

Step 3. Scoop out a tablespoon of the mixture and roll into balls, placing them on a sheet of baking paper on a tray.

Step 4. Once all the balls are rolled freeze them for 30 minutes.

We like to make our own chocolate from scratch and drizzle it on top of the balls then sprinkle some crushed hazelnuts on top.

Our chocolate recipe is a secret but you can melt down any chocolate you’d like to drizzle on them or none at all because they’re good either way.

The Hazelnut Truffles will last up to 7 days refrigerated.

Before restrictions, The Parkhouse Café could seat 180 at capacity. These days it’s about half that but they still turn over around 120 breakfasts on an average morning and more than 150 on a busy Sunday. Yup! Breakfast is that good and they understand the complexities of coffee.

MENU AND DIETARY REQUIREMENTS All day breakfasts are a huge hit at the Parkhouse Café! They also offer lunch, snacks, selection of beverages including coffees, teas, juices and wine.

Most dishes are made to order so the chef can adjust recipes to meet the tastes and dietary needs of each customer. The menus offer an excellent variety for vegetarian, vegan, paleo/keto/low-carb, gluten free, lactose free and low-fat diets.

PRICE Pricing at The Parkhouse Café is comparable to most Australian quality cafes with breakfast from $5.40 for raisin toast to $22.70 for cooked breakfast with the works.

Lunches range from $18.40 for a melt to $26.90 for Atlantic. Snacks including chips and aioli for $9.50, spring rolls for $9.50 and bruschetta for $14.90.

PAIRING WITH WINE

Bryant and Bonnie have created a wine list to suit all tastes with white wine varieties from Victoria, Margaret River, South Australia and New Zealand; sparkling from Victoria and South Australia and reds from all around Australia and New Zealand. They even have a bold Burgundy and cheeky French Rose.

ATMOSPHERE: With its large open fireplace, winter at the Parkhouse Café is ever so cosy, but come spring, you’ll enjoy the al fresco tables looking over Queens Park. And whilst the Parkhouse can be busy, staff are well-trained and work as a team to ensure standards are high.

We stopped by for a delicious and hearty lunch – chosen from the all-day breakfast menu as well as the lunch menu.

Each dish is made fresh with the skill of a master chef – you can’t fault the presentation, the flavour combination, the freshness, the portion, the garnish or the creativity.

MEDITERRANEAN BREAKFAST We love the twist on the “big breakfast” idea. The addition of chorizo, haloumi and spicy relish is bound to wake up your senses. We added eggs to this one.

BREKKY BURGER This brekky burger is an excellent choice for the slightly smaller appetite. With haloumi, bacon and egg, lashings of tomato jam and spinach on a toasted bun it is a tasty meal indeed.

PANCAKES As you’d expect, we’re talking seriously fluffy pancakes with amazing vanilla cheesecake spread, lots of gooey berries topped with ice-cream and crispy French merengues. Is it wicked? Yes! And we loved every minute!

LUNCH Vegetarian Pasta – tastes rich and creamy but is surprisingly light with lots of healthy vegetables for a big vitamin hit.

We loved the home-made pumpkin sauce with vegetables and rocket all topped with croutons and parmesan cheese.

ast month we talked about how to maximise the potential of the $25,000 HomeBuilder stimulus package — and what amazing benefits it could bring to your home — which for many will be their life’s most significant investment.

But there are many things you can do further to your home to add significantly to its overall energy efficiency, reduce its carbon footprint, and reduce it’s daily energy costs.

Let’s start with one of the major areas that contribute to unwanted heat loss or gain — your windows. Ordinary windows fitted with standard glass could almost completely negate any other energy savings incorporated into your home because they represent the path of least resistance for heat transfer in summer and heat loss in winter.

An investment here will pay for itself for the life of your home. Its not just the ‘smart glass’ on its own — and there are different levels of thermal insulation ability, from simple solar blocking efficiencies to double-glazing — but the entire smart glass window itself has superior sealing capabilities, preventing the costly leaking of air either way.

Increasing your home’s Thermal Mass is another major advance in keeping your home’s internal temperature more stable. The more ‘mass’ your house has throughout, the greater its ability (like a heat bank) to store, hold and evenly spread warmth throughout your home — so in winter it feels warmer and in summer, cooler.

A sure way to add instant heat bank mass is to make selected internal walls concrete block or brick, rather than from timber studs with plaster sheeting.

But adding PCM (Phase Change Materials) to your ceiling insulation also acts as a very efficient heat bank, and are particularly suitable for this climate. We introduced this in some detail in July’s STYLE last year. They’re cheaper and easier to include in your build than block walls, and can be added retrospectively.

When it comes to flowering plants, Queensland’s warm climate puts us ahead of southern states which means our spring flowering plants are often in bloom during August. We’re lucky when our winter flowers, such as camellia and magnolia, are still on the branch too.

AZALEA

LAVENDER

Azaleas are in flower from August through to September. They have shallow roots and need regular watering in our dry climate.

Make sure you spray for spider mites and keep up the fertiliser. Have you noticed some varieties have a pretty scent in the evening?

Lavender is essential in a cottage garden and useful for all kinds of remedies and recipes in the home. It prefers an arid environment and will not thrive in a tropical humid climate. French lavender does well in Toowoomba and is an ideal companion to rosemary, sage and thyme.

FREESIA So many colours! Bursting with fragrance, Feesias are gorgeous when they self sow en mass in the garden and through the lawn.

They are also great in pots. Plant corms in autumn in a sunny, well drained position.

HELEBORE Yes, we can grow Helebores in Toowoomba!

Also known as “winter roses”, they provide colour in shady spots under trees. Ranging from pure white to deep purple, Helebores are planted in late summer or autumn for winter blooms.

POLYANTHUS BERGENIA We love Bergenias for their old world charm and the fact that they are super hardy and thrive in the shady spots under trees and around rockeries.

DAFFODIL AND JONQUIL Friday 28 August is Cancer Council Queensland’s Daffodil Day – well chosen because daffodils are in full bloom during August. Fragrant jonquils appear in July and early August. Plant bulbs when the weather cools down in April/ May.

Part of the primula family, these brightly coloured flowers are so vibrant they almost don’t seem real. Plant seedlings in autumn in garden beds, as edging and in pots. They prefer morning sun and a little shade in summer. Do dead head flowers to stop the plant from going to seed.

WHAT TO DO IN THE GARDEN IN AUGUST

N

ow is the time to separate your clumping plants such as agapanthus, clivia, day lily and ornamental grass.

Most plants will appreciate applications of general liquid fertiliser every three weeks or so.

Make sure to water before and after. Apply a high potassium (fruit and flower fertiliser) to encourage flowering in spring.

It’s hair cut time for hedges especially Murraya, Lilly Pilly and Duranta.

You can also trim back summer flowering shrubs including Abutilon, Bauhinia, Allamanda, Mussaenda, Pentas, Brugmansia and Plumbago.

Remove the dead flowers from winter-flowering annuals and give them a good feed to encourage a final flush of flowers.

AGING IS NOT A DISEASE!

Just like humans, pets are living longer thanks to scientific research into aging. The key to keeping your pets in good nick for longer is simple: diet, exercise and regular vet check-ups for vaccinations, worming and to diagnose disease early on.

WHAT IS A SENIOR PET? Small dogs – over 10 years old Large dogs – over 8 years old Cats – over 12 years old Cats and some small dogs can live to be 15 years and more! Rebecca says as long as animals have quality of life, age is no barrier.

DENTAL DISEASE Dental health is a constant battle for small dogs and it starts from when they are puppies.

Rebecca says that around 80% of dogs they see at Toowoomba Veterinary Hospital have some dental disease.

“The problem is that dental disease doesn’t just affect teeth,” she said. “It can lead to health problems elsewhere in the body, such as the heart and kidney.”

“Start good dental hygiene from the getgo – when your pet is still a baby. And make sure they chew on dental chews like Greenies and Oravet. Bones from the butcher can help but we do find some animals chip their teeth on tough bones.

“Most importantly, don’t feed your pets people food – and no matter how big those pleading eyes get, never feed them sweets!”

DIET Pet food is scientifically formulated to provide a complete and balanced diet.

Rebecca advises a high-quality brand of pet food such as Hills or Royal Canin. Choose the right food for your pet’s needs ie puppy, working dog, senior, delicate tummy, dental disease, diabetes, and kidney disease.

ARTHRITIS Stiff joints can limit your pet’s daily routine so follow Rebecca’s advice to keep your pet safe and healthy: ► Keep pet within healthy weight range ► Ensure regular gentle exercise - walk on the grass instead of concrete. ► Ask your vet about joint supplements for animals, arthritis injections, anti-inflammatory, acupuncture and physiotherapy.

TYPICAL SIGNS OF AGING Eyes - Thankfully dogs rely on their sense of smell more than their eyes but when their vision starts to go, they can injure themselves by walking into doors or tripping down stairs. It is important to get your pets eyes checked by a veterinarian as there are some diseases that can cause vision loss, for example cataracts in dogs with diabetes. ► Don’t move the furniture too often as they rely on familiar surroundings. ► Leave lights on during the night. ► Keep pathways clear. ► Watch them and help them through doorways and especially up and down stairs

When a pet is deaf, we need to change our behaviour to help them. Deafness can be a normal part of aging but it is always a good idea to ask the vet to examine your pets ears if you are concerned. ► Sometimes they can hear a loud bell or a gong to get their attention ► Or you can wave at them, shine a torch ► They may not come to you anymore; you’ll have to go to them ► Be extra careful around traffic which they may not hear

DEMENTIA AND LOSS OF COGNITIVE FUNCTION Rebecca says doggy dementia can be hard to define so it’s important to rule out medical conditions that might be causing unusual behaviour such as pain or Cushing’s Disease.

Symptoms of dementia can include night terrors – when the pet wakes up in the dark, “lost” and panics; pacing or standing still in a corner; being overly anxious when alone; toileting in the house.

The main treatment for doggy dementia is lots of love, but there are some medications and diets that can help. Ask your Vet about options for your individual pet.

INCONTINENCE You don’t have to live with this! Ask your vet about a strategy which might include medication, stay-dry mats, special bedding and training.

Like many boarders, Year 11 student, Tayla Hargreaves, stepped inside the Fairholme Boarding house for the first time in more than 100 days.

This time she wasn’t alone; accompanying Tayla was her little sister Aisha who has adopted the tartan and moved into the boarding house too.

‘The good thing to come out of COVID was that Aisha has become a Fairholme girl too,’ said proud big sister, Tayla.

It follows a crazy four months, which saw their dad stuck at home in Papua New Guinea while Tayla and Aisha were stuck in Melbourne with their mum, grandma and brothers.

‘Once Mum realised she wasn’t going to get Aisha home any time soon, she enrolled her to begin homeschooling at Fairholme,’ said Tayla.

‘All of a sudden I was at Fairholme – in Year 5!” said Aisha. “Mum and Dad were thinking of enrolling me in Year 7. So, it’s all happened pretty fast.”

Aisha said meeting her classmates early, by joining Fairholme’s homeschooling program, helped her settle in. Having a room on the same floor as her big sister in the boarding house has been a comfort too.

The girls now have their fingers crossed their Dad will be able to fly to Australia in September.

NEW DEPUTY SHARES VISION FOR ST JOSEPH’S COLLEGE

he St Joseph’s College community has welcomed a new Deputy Principal, Mr Brendon Willocks.

Mr Willocks spent the last 12 years at St Mary’s College and is excited about this new opportunity. He is also looking forward to things getting back to normal in Term 3 with sports and cultural activities back on track for students after the easing of restrictions.

What attracted Mr Willocks to the College was the emphasis on the values of compassion, respect, endeavour and dignity which are core to the school community.

F

or me, going to university was a big deal.

I was the first in my family to embark on a tertiary education.

I studied a Bachelor of Arts, with majors in Literature, History and Sociology and it was the best decision I have ever made.

Current debate about the role of degrees like mine ignores the important role that the Arts, Humanities and Communications play in society. More worryingly, it plays into the myth that these disciplines don’t make students job-ready.

A well-rounded, capable employee relies on a suite of skills including critical thinking and advanced communication skills, higher-order problem solving and creativity, all of which are purposefully developed in Arts, Humanities and Communications degrees. Study in these degrees is a very good investment for prospective students.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics shows employability for graduates of Humanities and Communications degrees has been consistently high. In fact, recent reports from Australia and internationally highlight that Humanities graduates are employed at a rate of

just over 91 per cent.

This is above both science and maths – which have overall employment rates of 90 per cent. Graduates from the Humanities and Communications can also expect higher rates of pay, with average graduate starting salaries at just over $70,000; slightly more than science and maths graduates at $68,900.

Many people are inspired by and have a passion for history, anthropology, social justice, international relations, journalism, public relations, photography, advertising, creative writing, literature, communication studies, media studies, and communication.

These are subjects you can study in a Humanities and Communications degree and these are all areas that can make a huge difference to individuals, workplaces, and to society.

The most important consideration for anyone looking to pursue further education is to follow your passions and talents. I can personally vouch for the rewarding, meaningful careers on offer in Humanities and Communications

Mandy said that despite being a rather quiet and introverted boy, Eli was embraced by the Toowoomba Grammar School community from the time he commenced there in Year 5 and it helped him thrive. The support and mentorship provided by the TGS staff, particularly Chris McLeod and Peter Broadfoot, have helped Eli find an internal strength during challenging times.

“I know for sure that the TGS Sport and Activities program has complemented Eli’s ability and propelled him to achieve his goals and get to this point,” stated Mandy.

Eli is one of many Toowoomba Grammar School students who have been noticed by ‘scouts’ in their various fields and accepted into sport or music scholarship programs right around the world over the past two decades.

hat could be the reality for Toowoomba parents,Richard and Mandy Adams with their 18-year-old son Eli on the road to the big time in not just Australia, but the prestigious European Football Championship (UEFA).

Eli was offered a contract to play with SV Elversberg in Germany, after impressing scouts during a school group football tour to Germany in 2019. He was one of four Toowoomba Grammar School students on that tour who were offered scholarships with various German football clubs.

Eli eagerly accepted and moved overseas in January this year. It was the perfect pathway to his dream of playing in the European League. COVID-19 unfortunately meant Eli had to return home before the season was even underway. However, his attitude and ability has left a lasting impression and the Club has invited him to return when conditions allow.

In the meantime, his football dream is far from on hold. In a further testament to his potential, Eli is currently training with the Brisbane Roar Men’s A-League squad.

Mandy has credited Toowoomba Grammar School for putting Eli on the path to success.

“The overall culture and values of TGS has helped Eli considerably,” she said.

“He’s very selfmotivated and focused; he’s always been diligent in sports as well as studies and has been awarded various academic

P Have you ever looked into an African Lion’s eyes, just centimetres away, felt its breath and shared a moment; a peaceful gaze? If you haven’t, you should and you can at Darling Downs Zoo.

Y

ou can also hand feed zebras and giraffes, hold tiny marmosets and pat meerkats. It’s all part of the zoo’s “Personal Encounters” program which ensures you get to fulfil your dream of interacting with these amazing animals. It’s a humbling and joyous experience and one that owners of Darling Downs Zoo (DDZ), Steph and Steve Robinson, are happy to share.

“The animals enjoy meeting people and in fact they really missed our visitors during COVID,” said Steph. “Especially the giraffes, they were just not themselves.”

Steph and Steve started the zoo from scratch 15 years ago with just 50 acres and 100 animals across 20 species. Now they have 150 acres and 500 animals across 50 species.

“Steve adores our animals,” said Steph.

“He grew up with exotic animals having literally run away from home as a child and joined the circus. That’s where he learned to train big cats and he started rescuing and caring for any animals that were going to be destroyed – including a rather famous old female Jaguar that he saved.

“He started Robinson’s Family Circus and was collecting more and more animals all the time.

So owning a zoo was a natural progression.”

The meandering pathways at DDZ cover 1.8km but it doesn’t feel like a big zoo because it has a relaxed, friendly feel. It’s really a stroll in the country that just happens to include very close exotic animals.

HOW YOU CAN HELP? “We don’t need volunteers as such,” said Steph. “We need animal food, especially eucalypt for koalas – they are very fussy eaters. We also need acacia, tipuana and mulberry leaves for the giraffes.

“We have planted trees to feed the animals but there is no way we could grow enough for them.”

Steph says the local community was amazing during the COVID lockdown when there was no income for the Zoo but plenty of hungry mouths to feed.

“People made donations and local farmers phoned us and said we could

come and collect branches from their properties - which was fantastic.

“Our weekly feed is sourced from many different places and includes fresh items such as fish and insects as well as special nuts and seeds and of course meat for the big cats.”

DDZ is not just for visitors. It contributes to a number of breeding programs for endangered animals including the Bilby and an African desert antelope called an “Addax”.

“Our Bilbys aren’t on display,” said Steph. “We breed them for release into the wild, for the Charleville Bilby Centre and for other zoos.

“The Addax is almost extinct in the wild but our buck Adam is proving to be a great breeder and he is doing his bit to ensure the survival of the species.

“We are also part of an international program with approval to breed the Sri Lankan Leopard.”

REUSE WITH A COMMUNITY HEART Reuse and repurposing with a community heart – that’s what makes Reviva Toowoomba special.

The reuse shop, located at the Greater Toowoomba Waste Management Facility in Wellcamp, is more than just a shop; it is a community hub with a garden and community engagement at its core.

Reviva is part of Resource Recovery Australia (RRA), a social enterprise that partners with Toowoomba Regional Council to divert waste from landfill and create stable and meaningful jobs for people experiencing barriers to work.

RRA employs 94 people in sites across Australia.

This week the Reviva team unveiled an extension to their reuse garden, a community space at the shop’s entry. The garden is a sensory playground of colours and fun repurposing ideas.

“We want the garden to be a community space that encourages imagination, fun and reuse,” RRA Deputy General Manager Ally Glendenning explained.

“We already had a community herb garden and some fun character planters but this week we added dozens of reimagined items from the store. We want to encourage the whole community, people from all walks of life, to come and explore, to experience reuse in action. You never know what characters you might find.”

The team’s passion for reuse and repurposing is strong.

“I love giving an item a second life, reimagining what it could be and creating a whole new item with just my imagination and some elbow grease. We have repurposed a cable wheel into a table,

a car bonnet into a chair, and even a fire pole into an oversized fidget spinner. The repurposing possibilities are endless.”

Chris Behan, previously a Lifeline volunteer, loves the community aspect of his job at Reviva Toowomba.

“It’s good to hear people’s stories and do whatever you can to help them. People may be struggling, you don’t know what they are going through but you can help them out, even if it’s just something to put in their garden or something they can use around the house.”

Through Facebook we are reaching even more people now. We’ve had morning teas to invite the public in and we tell them all about Reviva and our social goals. We want to be a community-based organisation that people can rely on.”

Since opening in December 2018, Reviva Toowoomba has been responsible for diverting 633 tonnes or 40 truckloads of waste from landfill for reuse and repurposing. The operation employed 10 people and served more than 11,000 customers from the local community.

t is not uncommon when discussing legal matters with our clients to be told that they have never done any Estate planning and therefore they do not have a Will. Most are still “getting around to doing one”.

But without a Will the certainty of who will be your beneficiary may be taken out of your hands. A great example of the twists and turns in Estate Law is the situation where the Estate is divided between more than one spouse.

Here’s how it works : John is married to Jane but separated from her over two years ago, when he moved in with and started a defacto relationship with his new partner Jill. He has never done any Estate planning and does not have a Will. He has not divorced Jane although they have finalized property settlement in the Family Court.

After John’s death the legislation (Succession Act 1981 (Qld)) is applied to his Estate and both Jane and Jill are defined as ‘spouses’ for the purposes of the division of his Estate. Both of them will be entitled

to receive a distribution from his Estate.

The legislation asks the question : “Who is my spouse?”

The legislation answers the question : a “Husband” or “Wife”, a “Defacto Partner” or a “Civil Partner”. The legislation provides for distribution to those parties even if that was not what the deceased person would have intended at the time of their death.

Your Last Will and Testament is the best and only way, with some exceptions, of ensuring your Estate reaches the hands of your intended beneficiaries.

We encourage you to consider planning your Estate and making a Will to ensure that your wishes are fulfilled upon your death. As you know there are only two certainties in life, death and taxes, and they can come upon us unexpectedly without warning.

It is always best to be in control, prepared and have a plan.

I suggest you engage a lawyer experienced in Estate planning to assist you with preparing a Will that reflects your wishes and covers all bases for you and your loved ones.

can barely lift my arms to type today’s story. They are SO sore. But it isn’t because of an overzealous gym session or chopping wood for the fireplace I’ve been shuffling the layout of The Real Estate People office recently and that meant a lot of heavy lifting.

The internal move was necessary because we’ve brought some new staff on board and I wanted everyone to have an uncluttered and productive workspace. So, that meant desks, chairs, computers, photocopiers and way too many filing cabinets all had to be ‘Tetris-ed’ into their new corners to maximise the design. It was exhausting, but I wasn’t on my own.

My wonderful staff and their partners were there every step of the way. Every time I turned a corner, I would literally run into one of them – always with a box of something in hand, or they’d be sweeping a broom or crawling under a desk to reconnect a monitor. I couldn’t be prouder.

NEW ACQUISITION AT TOOWOOMBA REGIONAL ART GALLERY Judy Watson’s “Inspection Tour” is a recent acquisition to Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery’s Toowoomba City Collection.

Born in Mundubbera, Queensland, in 1959, Judy’s Aboriginal matrilineal family is from Waanyi Country in northwest Queensland.

Printed by Basil Hall Editions, the etching reproduces a map, Inspection Tour of Aboriginal Stations in North Queensland and Torres Strait by the Hon. Home Secretary 1931, courtesy of The University of Queensland Anthropology Museum.

Reconsidering Captain James Cook’s Pacific exploration this year, 250 years after his Australian landfall led to Aboriginal dispossession, Judy’s visualisation of truth also acknowledges great hurt and proud resilience.

Inspection Tour will be displayed in Breaking News: Captain Cook in 2020 at the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery.

Monica Henry

Describe your style?

I work with wool and create floral textile designs, full of movement and texture. I love using colour to evoke a sense of happiness and bring a smile when one walks into the room.

When did you commence art?

Brought up in a creative household I’ve taken my hand to most creative forms, painting, drawing, sculpting, to name a few. I commenced with wool in the last few years and developed my technique throughout this time, using different stitches to create depth and layers as well as experimenting with different wools.

How has it evolved?

Art is an ever-evolving journey and its healthy trying new things. I love new ideas and doing short courses. At the beginning of my wool journey I completed a floristry course, which really influenced my work. My mother is a huge knitter and her grandfather used to make rugs using the same wool technique, so it’s in my blood.

Why do you enjoy art?

With a houseful of boys it’s always busy and loud. Art gives me a sense of calm and almost a form of meditation. I love that it’s something that is just mine, an escape.

Highlights?

My greatest moment was joining Greenhouse Interiors. It was always a dream of mine.

Another huge moment, Celeste Barber chose my art as part of her backdrop for her US tour.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I live in Geelong with my husband and two young sons. I’m currently working on a new range for Greenhouse Interiors.

What inspires you?

There’s much inspiration all around us. I love travelling, there’s so much to see and it helps to shape you as a person and as a ‘creative’. Shape, colour, textures…

What do you like about Toowoomba?

Being ‘The Garden City’ with an abundance of inspiration, I can’t wait to visit one day. I hope to personally deliver my work to Grammar Art Show next year.

What is your dream goal?

I’d love to have my work recognised and styled in a large home design magazine.

CULTURAL DANCE FOUND IN OUR TOWN Toowoomba is a town of diversity and cultural exchange, without language, all you have remaining is movement, and we are very lucky to have so many cultural dance options.

We spoke to some of Toowoomba’s talented dancers to find out what makes their moves so special. We also asked about the history behind the dances.

From DrumDance Bellydance we spoke with Madonna Teitzel, a certified American Tribal Style Bellydance teacher here in Toowoomba. Madonna began learning the art of bellydancing in 1994. When she started she said it made her feel strong, feminine and improved her self esteem enormously.

She has been teaching and performing this unique dance now for more than 25-years and is happy to share the history and discpline of bellydancing.

HOW LARGE IS THE TOOWOOMBA BELLYDANCING COMMUNITY? We are a small group of dedicated dancers and musicians. We used to hold a Hafla (Middle Eastern for dance and music party) every quarter where we would come together to dance and play. These days it is an annual event where we dress in our finery and perform for each other, the Toowoomba public, our families and friends.

WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC DO YOU DANCE TO? Egyptian, Turkish, Moroccan rhythms and songs. We often dance to live percussion with the musicians playing darbouka, frame drum, tabal, ney flute, arghul, mizmar. The dancers play sagat which are small finger cymbals.

Mura Biri Gururu Aboriginal Dancers was founded in 2010 by 16-year-old Muruwarri/Mardigan man William Haupt. He created the dance in his backyard to music from a didgeridoo.

They started with just four dancers and the troupe has now grown to forty.

She tried a Bollywood Hip Hop class and not only enjoyed it, after some time, the teacher noticed and Drea soon found herself performing at weddings and sangeets (Indian music and dance night for the wedding). One opportunity led to another and in 2012 Dance Masala was born!

The origin of Bellydance is the The Middle East and specifically the folk dances of Egypt and Turkey. The style my troupe, DrumDance Bellydance, practise has taken elements of Egyptian folk dance and inspiration from a collective of dancers in the United States called FatChanceBellyDance under the guidance of the creator Carolena Nericcio. It is not authentic but rather a folkloric fusion.

Bollywood Dancing is an umberella term that covers dances set to Bollywood music. Bollywood or the Hindi Film industry is based in Mumbai, Maharastra.

However, there are many styles of folk dance and classical dance (from all around India) that have representation in Bollywood, as well as Western Influences such as hip hop, ballet, Latin and others.

HOW LARGE IS THE TOOWOOMBA BELLYDANCING COMMUNITY? We have a few students in Toowoomba that do our online classes each week and we absolutely love being able to reach our regional students! We used to have a physical branch in Toowoomba, back in the day, and regularly come to Woodford Folk Festival, so it is wonderful that through the power of online classes, we can maintain this connection.

WHAT IS A BOLLYWOOD MISCONCEPTION? People think Bollywood dancing is Jai Ho, or turning the lightbulb and that there is not much artistry or technique behind it. In actual fact, Jai Ho is from

Hollywood, not a Bollywood movie! And, as with anything, you’ll have excellent teachers and academies who have staff with a high level of technical training and understanding, and you’ll have others who are doing it as more of a hobby.

We present our music the ancient way by singing the language that was sung by our ancestors, accompanied by the didgeridoo and clapsticks. The dancers also chant whilst dancing. All of these sounds combined represent the sounds of the land and helps call upon the good spirits.

Mura Biri Gururu Aboriginal Dancers would like to acknowledge and pay respects to the Quandamooka and Nunukul People of Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) for giving permission and teaching us their stories, song and dance so we can then pass on knowledge to help keep their culture and stories alive.

WHAT COSTUME IS TRADITIONALLY WORN WHEN BOOLYWOOD DANCING? It depends on the style of Bollywood. If we are doing a Bollyhop number it would be streetwear and kicks, or trainers. If it is something semiclassical for a wedding, we would wear a Lehengha Choli (maxi skirt and crop top) with a dupatta. If it is something that is folk, e.g. Garba, we would wear the Gujrtati Channiya Choli (skirt and blouse), or for Bhangra we would wear Kurta Pajama or Patiala (long dresslike short and pants).

There are a few signature moves our dancers do which is not only done by our group but from different groups and tribes around Australia. Firstly, stomping of the feet is an important action done by the males which is done to lift dust up from the ground to awaken the spirits.The shuffle which is a delicate gentle foot sliding action done by the women, a dance move learnt from our ancestors by watching how the brolgas and emus danced. Also the wellknown dance move called the shake-a-leg, a move that represents and imitates the flapping wings of piyimpir the butterfly.
