What training option is right for you?

If you are considering gaining additional qualifications, there are two main training pathways – vocational education and training and universities and other institutions.

E

ducation and Training is a large and fast-growing industry, according to the 2019 Australian Jobs report.

A significant share is female (72%) and part-time work is common (39% of jobs); almost two thirds of workers in this industry are professionals (62%).

This workforce is highly educated and university education is often required.

Just nine per cent of workers are aged 15 to 24 years, due largely to the time taken to gain the required qualifications.

Education and Training employment is projected to increase strongly over the five years to May 2023, influenced by growth in the school-aged population, continued strength in international education and the growing demand for adult and community education.

In addition, the relatively large share of workers who are aged 55 years or older (22%) indicates that retirements will create opportunities in the industry over the next decade.

The top employing occupations include primary school teachers, secondary school teachers, education aides, and child carers.

The Vocational Education and Training (VET) system develops workplacespecific skills and knowledge by delivering nationally recognised training.

VET includes publicly owned TAFE institutes, private providers (including enterprise and industry providers), community organisations and schools.

What if I don’t complete further education?

There are still job opportunities if you decide that post-school education is not right for you. The option of further study will also be available later if you change your mind or your circumstances alter.

Tertiary study is not just for young people, with thousands of people studying in their 30s or older.

Although most new jobs created in recent years (and those expected in the future) are in skilled occupations, there

will continue to be large numbers of jobs in lower skilled occupations (that is, jobs which do not usually require postschool qualifications). In addition, lower skilled occupations generally have higher turnover rates than those which require post-school qualifications, and many job openings are available each year across all industries.

Significant proportions of Labourers (61%), machinery operators and drivers (57%) and sales workers (56%) do not hold post-school qualifications. This includes occupations like general sales assistants, waiters, checkout operators and office cashiers, and truck drivers.

There are opportunities in all industries for people who do not have post-school qualifications. For example, more than

half of the jobs in accommodation and food services and retail trade are held by workers who do not have such qualifications.

What is needed to gain employment without post-school qualifications?

There is often strong competition for jobs which do not require post-school qualifications. Previous experience is commonly required by employers and this can be a key barrier for new job seekers.

There are, though, a number of strategies which can enhance a job seeker’s prospects.

Victoria University offers unique study model, pathways and placements Victoria University’s Australia-first block model for teaching and learning continues to shine by improving student grades and reducing drop-out rates.

A

ll VU students now complete one subject at a time over a three or four-week period in small classes before moving to the next, unlike students at other universities who juggle several subjects at once.

The model has won numerous awards for its role in promoting student success.

Data shows that first-year Bachelor degree students passed only 74% of their units in 2017 before the block model was introduced, and only 20% of them received a high distinction grade average.

But in 2019, two years after block model was introduced, first year Bachelor degree students passed 87% of their units, and 28% of them received a high distinction grade average.

Besides being the only Australian university to offer block model study, VU has long been known as a dual-sector university.

This means it offers both TAFE training through VU Polytechnic, as well as university degrees, with many pathways between the two.

“I was born and raised in South Africa,” shares Kruno.

“My sister lives over here in Australia. I came to visit her a couple of years ago. I really liked it - fell in love with the place.

“I wanted to pursue one of my passions, which is cars and automotive, so I decided to find out how I could do that over here.

“I chose to study automotive here at Baxter. During my search for a place to study, Baxter was easily my first choice.”

Kruno says he struck gold in his search for employment, even before he has finished his studies.

“Personally, it didn’t prove difficult to find a job in the same field as my studies,” says Kruno. “In fact, I found a job within two weeks of starting my search.”

Kruno says his studies at Baxter Institute have him well and truly in the driver’s seat as far as his career path is concerned: “I’d like to open up my own automotive workshop within the next five years.”

Establishing a good Foundation Foundation Learning Centre is a not-for-profit organisation that champions community development through education, which is based in Narre Warren, south-east of Melbourne.

pecialising in adult education, Foundation Learning Centre (FLC), offers accredited qualifications in the following adult VET areas: • ACM20117 Certificate II in Animal Studies • BSB30115 Certificate III in Business SIT20216 Certificate II in Hospitality SHB30416 Certificate III in Hairdressing • SHB20216 Certificate II in Salon Assistant Vogue Academy is an on-site training salon, where students can undertake Certificate III in Hairdressing or Certificate II in Salon Assistant.

The working salon allows students to practice their skills with real-life clients, under the expert guidance of the highlyexperienced educators.

The Vogue Academy salon is open to the public three days per week and offers discounted haircuts, colours and styling services.

In addition to adult education, FLC is also one of the largest providers in the area of education alternatives for youth who find themselves disengaged from mainstream secondary school.

FLC’S youth education area offers all of the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) across the Foundation, Intermediate and Senior levels (year 10, 11 and 12 alternative).

FLC also offer a Certificate I in General Education for Adults for students at a Year 9 level.

Students undertaking a VCAL certificate also select a VET certificate to do as part of their course, which means that at the end of each year they could have successfully completed one VET qualification in addition to their VCAL level.

of VCAL, they can end up with up to three VET qualifications as well, which means that many are ready to enter the workforce or undertake further education.

Many of FLC’s students have faced challenges in mainstream school that have meant they have become disengaged from education, so the learning environment has been designed to be supportive and flexible to help the students re-engage.

The classes are smaller, and along with the educators, some classes have educational support staff.

On-site student wellbeing support is available five days a week and focuses on supporting the students with their mental, physical and emotional health and wellbeing.

For some students, FLC has been life changing. It has given them the opportunity to finish their education in an environment that they feel comfortable in, with levels of support that meet their needs and a program that focuses on what is really important.

In addition to youth education programs, FLC also run one of the largest Young Parents Education Programs (YPEP) in the area.

This program gives pregnant and parenting teenagers the opportunity to complete their education, while having the freedom to bring their babies to school with them.

The students work around a large communal table under the guidance of their educators, attending class three days per week, and undertaking a VET course of their choosing on the fourth day if they wish.

Half of the classroom is set up as a nursery and play space for the babies, with an on-site childcare support worker to help the students with their babies.

The curriculum for this program includes topics and activities that are relevant to young parents in addition to the usual curriculum.

This program is incredibly successful, and offers these students the opportunity to complete their education.

Foundation Learning Centre strives to make education accessible to all, and offers a range of courses to meet the needs of their community. A range of literacy courses are available for those wanting to learn to read, write and communicate in English. Short accredited courses, general interest and skill building courses and community groups are also available at FLC. FLC’s Early Learning Centre offers an early education program for children aged 21 months to 5 years.

I currently work at Kyneton High School, focusing on providing learning and equity support to students, with a wellbeing lens.

Why VET? I was at a point where I wanted to leave my corporate life and change careers.

I had just come back from maternity leave and was juggling two young children; with that came new responsibilities and a shift in financial and lifestyle priorities.

The Certificate IV in Mental Health Free TAFE course came at the right time and allowed me to follow my passion for helping people by supporting people living with mental illness through a recovery journey.

What did you enjoy most about the training?

connections during my time at VU Polytechnic and managed to get a mentor by being proactive at one of the organised speaking events.

I also had the opportunity to work in the wellness space at a local high school for my placement, allowing me to gain experience whilst staying connected to where I live.

My course was very accommodating to all students regardless of their background and I enjoyed both the structure of the Certificate IV in Mental Health and the e-learning opportunity that allows for extra study time at home.

Building a bright future in construction Construction is a large employing industry and a significant number of new jobs have been added in recent years, according to the 2019 Australian Jobs report.

T

his growth, however, has slowed recently and employment has fallen slightly in the past year.

Technicians and trades workers account for 51% of workers and most jobs are fulltime (85%).

Training is generally through the vocational education and training sector.

More than half of those employed hold a certificate III or higher vocational qualification, often gained through the completion of an apprenticeship.

There were 86,700 apprentices and trainees employed in this industry in 2018.

One third of workers in this industry do not hold post-school qualifications and around 16% are labourers, suggesting there are also some good entry level opportunities.

Construction is projected to have above average employment growth over the five years to May 2023.

Strong growth is expected across all sectors of this industry.

The top five employing occupations across the sector are carpenters and joiners, electricians, construction managers, plumbers and building and plumbing labourers.

The Victorian Department of Education says a builder’s labourer, also known as a construction worker, performs routine tasks in erecting and repairing structures and facilities on building and construction sites and in factories producing prefabricated building components.

What’s your current career?

In 2019 I finished a Certificate III in Dental Assisting through Free TAFE at Chisholm Institute.

The dental practice where I did my placement were really impressed with the skills I’d learned at TAFE, and they hired me once I completed my course.

Why VET? Helping people is always been important to me, so becoming a dental assistant seemed like a natural fit.

As a single mum, having the money to go back to school was never really an option.

The course being made available through Free TAFE was a massive factor for me in going back to school.

What did you enjoy most about the training?

The practical days were a highlight for me – it really gave me a chance to hone my skills before working on the job.

We had an excellent teacher who was incredibly thorough and made learning fun.

She worked part-time at a clinic while

teaching and it was great having a teacher with that direct, hands-on experience.

I didn’t enjoy high school very much (especially the theoretic side of things) so it was refreshing to go back into a learning environment all those years later and find enjoyment in learning again.

Why would you recommend VET training to others?

My TAFE experience prepared me for work and gave me the confidence to step into the job on day one.

I was a single stay-at-home mum and to think about where I am now as a result of Free TAFE training is quite surreal.

I’d encourage anyone who’s thinking about TAFE training to give it a go.

Facts and myths Myth: VET is only for people who can’t get into university.

Fact: You can’t compare VET and university. Each is an important but distinct part of the education and training system.

Many industries that are critical to our economy rely on VET to provide their training, such as construction and care services.

Many workers will go to both over the course of their careers.

Around 15 per cent of university students who finish their courses and go on to do more training in VET, demonstrating that each has something unique to offer.

Myth: VET is blokey and male dominated.

Fact: There is a huge diversity of VET courses available to study, and both men and women study at TAFEs and

training organisations.

Last year, women made up more than half (56 per cent) of all Free TAFE commencements.

While there was notable growth in women participating in courses associated with historically maledominated industries, such as the Diploma of Building and Construction and the Certificate IV in Cyber Security, the Diploma of Nursing and the Certificate IV in Education Support remain some of the most popular Free TAFE courses.

Myth: VET qualifications are not valued by employers.

Fact: According to data from the National Centre for Vocational Education Research, half of all employers use the TAFE and training system. Victoria’s VET system currently provides training for seven

of the top 10 occupations projected to have greatest growth in new jobs over the next four years.

A key part of Victoria’s VET system is extensive engagement with industry overseen by the Victorian Skills Commissioner.

In addition, 10 statewide Industry Advisory Groups ensure there is a connection between industry and TAFEs and Regional Skills Taskforces give us input from local communities across Victoria.

TAFE was also able to quickly develop training for some of the new government priority projects, such as the Holmesglen Tunnelling Centre providing workers for the Metro Tunnel Project and Victoria University Werribee, in partnership with the John Holland Consortium, able to deliver workers for the West Gate Tunnel Projects.

Stimulus provides opportunities for the next generation of tradies In spite of the recent economic challenges, a range of opportunities exist for young people who are considering a career in the building and construction industry.

overnment stimulus targeted at boosting residential construction projects as part of its economic recovery plan will mean that businesses who benefit will be in a better position to hire new apprentices and bring the next generation of tradespeople into the workforce.

Andrew Shea, CEO of Builders Academy Australia (BAA), an award-winning Registered Training Organisation (RTO), said that this meant now was a great time for young people to get involved in building and construction.

“The residential building and construction industry generates more activity across Australia than nearly every other industry,” Mr Shea said. “It’s due to its essential nature that State and Federal Governments often significantly subsidise training in these areas.”

How long have you been a police officer?

I have been a Police Officer for four years and before that I was a Protective Services Officer for four years.

I started at the Victoria Police Academy as a Protective Services Officer recruit and graduated in 2012. I had the opportunity to transition through the Constable Qualifying Program in 2016 and graduated as a Probationary Constable the same year.

What made you want to become a police officer?

I have always been a frontline person, the role of policing can both be demanding and rewarding. I have the qualities and skills to thrive in such an environment. I work well under pressure, love working as part of a team and helping people in difficult situations.

My family migrated from the Philippines when I was a teenager and our life in Australia has provided opportunities that would not have been available to us in the Philippines. Both of my brothers are in jobs that support the community – my brother runs a family law firm and the other one is a police officer. It is our way of giving back to the country that has given us so much.

What did you do before joining Victoria Police? (i.e. did you have a previous career) I was working at Department of Justice as a Justice Officer Team Leader for two years, however my background is in government and hospitality.

What is your ultimate career goal?

Attain a leadership role and expand my knowledge and training. There are so many options within Victoria Police and it’s important to find the right fit that suits my strengths and attributes.

What do you find most fulfilling about your job? Why? There are several people that I’ve interacted with who were at a very low point in their lives and because I’ve listened without judgement and showed genuine concern, I’ve been able to provide a better outcome and get them the help they need. I find it very fulfilling to be able to help people in some way because it makes me appreciate what I have.

What do you find most challenging?

There are several things that come to mind: shift work, paperwork, work/life balance, physical health and fitness. I find the most challenging is, the toll of mental health that can take over when you have been exposed to an incident that affects

you. As a police officer we are exposed to potentially traumatic incidents several times during our career.

How do you cope with that?

We have a network of services that provide counselling and support for police officers and their families. We also have colleagues that provide peer support. We talk openly to some of our peers that have been through a similar experience. Selfawareness is key, once I have identified that I need help, I ask for it.

Would you recommend joining Victoria Police to others? Why? Yes! Come and join the Police Family!

Camaraderie among police officers is unlike any other; we understand the challenges and demands of the job and tend to be incredibly supportive of each other.

What would you say are some important attributes for a police officer to have?

I worked in hospitality, as a bartender in St Kilda. I worked there with a view toward becoming a general manager and possibly owning my own bar.

What is your ultimate career goal?

To become the Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police. It’s highly ambitious I know, but I see Victoria Police as a life-long career for me. I would like to work in a variety of roles, then utilise this range of experience to guide the organisation into the future. I met the most recent Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton once, at a function to celebrate the relations between Victoria Police and the local community. He seemed very downto-earth and approachable. I would like to

be like him one day.

What do you find most fulfilling about your job? Why? I enjoy the diversity that comes with the job. I enjoy working with a range of people across the State of Victoria, from both inside and outside of the police force, to ensure that we follow up matters efficiently and prevent offences.

Having worked in the Family Violence Unit, I have found family violence work to be the most fulfilling, as I can work with families to help them achieve a safe home environment. We develop ongoing relationships with victims and repeat offenders to ensure family safety and wellbeing is managed and optimised.

What do you find most challenging?

As a police officer, you are exposed to various dangerous incidents and graphic content, with victims requiring our assistance during some of the most vulnerable times of their life. This can be particularly challenging as a first responder, as decision-making is critical. it is our duty to remain diligent and professional in our role, as we ensure safety first, and then carry out investigations.

How do you cope with that?

Work/life balance is essential, to maintain a healthy body and mind, fit to engage in the varied duties as a police officer.

I like to play sport, including surfing and football. I give a lot of my time to friends and family, as I know they are an invaluable source of ongoing support for me in my role.

I feel constantly supported by my colleagues within the force. Following each critical incident, there is a wellbeing program in place, where senior members support us and provide mentoring.

Would you recommend joining Victoria Police to others? Why? I would highly recommend joining Victoria Police. It provides a life-long career in which you will be challenged and rewarded both physically and intellectually.

Depending on your interests, there are many different departments and fields in which you can work. For example, I have recently joined the Victoria Police Prosecutions Unit, where I have been able to undertake a university law degree.

This has been particularly useful in my new role as a police prosecutor in court.

What would you say are some important attributes for a police officer to have?

A career in the police force is particularly suited to those who are motivated, hardworking, and enjoy working in teams.

linical Coding is a specialised field within the health sector where coders record an inpatient stay or out-patient visit using codes using the International Classification of Diagnoses (The ICD version used in a specific country or region) for diagnosis, procedures, injuries and their cause.

These codes are used as the basis for hospital funding, for public health trend monitoring and by decision makers in any healthcare system at local, national and international levels.

A clinical coder (sometimes known as a clinical coding officer, medical coder or nosologist) is a health information professional whose main duties are to analyse clinical statements and assign standard codes using a classification system.

In Australia the code system is currently ICD-10-AM 11th edition and the Australian Classification of Healthcare Interventions (ACHI).

Coders work in hospitals, healthcare services, insurance agencies and government agencies.

Coders allocate codes, and in some cases, coders are also used to support the analysis of clinical data extracted from information systems using such code systems.

WDEA Works supports Anthony to achieve his career goals Completing your final year of schooling is both an exciting and occasionally stressful time in your life. Imagine undertaking this challenge with a learning disability and the worry of how you will be able to transition into your desired career – this was the reality facing Anthony Papillo …. until he discovered WDEA Works.

F

ollowing a presentation at a local school, Anthony contacted WDEA Works requesting to participate in the Disability Employment Service (DES) program.

Anthony wanted assistance with finding a traineeship in Childcare.

Anthony’s learning disability had affected his self-confidence and ability to advocate for himself; he didn’t feel confident to undertake the theory components of a traineeship. Jessica Peters from WDEA Works Mildura worked with Anthony; getting to know him and providing him with the tools needed to make his dream career a reality.

“Together we developed a goal plan, mapping out what supports Anthony would need to be successful in finding a traineeship. A key part of Anthony’s journey was to find a supportive employer, willing to help him build up his confidence, and provide a supportive work environment that allowed him to be successful in his theory components” Said Jessica who then worked with Anthony to provide support and help him achieve these goals.

Within three weeks, Anthony successfully gained a fulltime traineeship as a Child Care Worker. To ensure Anthony had the best chance of success, Jessica worked with Anthony’s employer and Anthony to implement the necessary support systems. This included ensuring there was additional support from his training provider to assist with the theory assessments.

WDEA Works also assisted Anthony with purchasing and organising his work uniforms, WWCC, Police Check and First Aid certificate.

Anthony is proud to report, “in just over twelve months since walking into the WDEA Works office. I have completed a traineeship with a local Child Care Centre and completed my Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.

I am so thankful for the opportunities my traineeship and WDEA Works has given me. I have enjoyed it so much that I want to continue on and complete my Diploma.”

Since beginning his career “Anthony continues to gain knowledge and understanding in the early childhood setting. We look forward to seeing Anthony continue to develop and grow into a strong male educator,” said Anthony’s supervisor.

Student Journey JOSH LEE

Photography Studies College (PSC) Certificate IV in Photography and Photo Imaging Student, Josh Lee, always had learning photography at the back of his mind.

He started shooting with a basic point and shoot camera, but his love for the craft grew when he began experimenting with his first Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera. When he was in Year 10, his passion for photography grew and he began to think of it as a viable career.

Josh attended Billanook College in Mooroolbark,

Victoria. Half-way through Year 12, he attended a Career Expo where he found the PSC exhibition stand. Josh was attracted to PSC’s full-time Cert IV course for several key reasons. Firstly, it offered a practical, hands-on course with real-world outcomes and teachers who are working in the industry. Secondly, he really liked the close-knit community feeling and support provided by the College. Lastly, the course is delivered over sixmonths, which is half the time of equivalent qualifications provided at other institutions.

Recently she went to Kenya to photograph for the charity Beadworks.

Rochelle is also the social media manager on a volunteer basis for HomeGirls, a not-for profit organisation that supports refugees and asylum seekers in Australia.

ROCHELLE HANSEN

PSC Bachelor of Photography Graduate Rochelle Hansen is a full-time photographer and videographer. The production company she works for has big name clients, including Melbourne Fashion Week, Tennis Australia, Woolworths and Honda. Rochelle also volunteers for non-profit organisations, where

Yiana Pandelis

Two-year full-time pre-professional program

Yiana Pandelis, 23, graduated from Acting Performance Studio by completing the two-year, full-time course.

Soon after graduating she got cast as a lead in and filmed the feature film Unsound, where she plays Finn, a DJ who is a deaf trans man.

Unsound focuses on the relationship between a disillusioned and transient guitarist Noah and Finn, who is a proud, Auslan-only speaker who works and runs a local centre and nightclub for his deaf community.

Together, the pair traverse new ground, sharing their languages – Noah’s music

and Finn’s signs – with one another.

Yiana herself is hearing impaired and she had a wonderful journey at the full-time course.

In the film, all deaf characters are played by deaf actors.

Yiana worked with trans consultants to prepare for the role of Finn, a young hearing-impaired trans man in the early stages of transition.

Yiana’s story is important to tell as it speaks about inclusivity and success for actors living with disabilities as well as stories by, for and about the LGBTQI community.

Acting Performance Studio, based in Moorabbin (in Melbourne’s south-east) with three other branches in the north, east and west of Melbourne, is a drama and performing arts school offering acting classes for adults and young people of all ages and levels of experience.
