Kumbia
Well known as the Peanut Capital of Australia, while also featuring a large shopping centre, cinema and observatory, Kingaroy is a main destination for visitors in the South Burnett. It is also well known for being home to former premier of Queensland Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen.
This town is home to many of the farms that yield the region’s fine quality produce. It is also known for hosting the popular Kumbia Races, which coincide with the Melbourne Cup. The Burrandowan Picnic Races and Bunya Mountains are also close by, both bringing thousands to the region.
Booie Range
Maidenwell
With high altitude scenic views, and being home to the well-known Crane Winery, the Booie Range is quickly becoming known as a great tourist destination.
Near the Bunya Mountains, with Coomba Falls on its doorstep, Maidenwell is surrounded by beautiful scenery. It is also home to the highly regarded Maidenwell Trading Post, and is now a destination for the Maidenwell Country Muster.

Home to the South Burnett
THE South Burnett Region is located within 90 minutes of the Sunshine Coast and about two hours from Brisbane. It covers the area from the Blackbutt Range through to the edge of Kilkivan in the Gympie Regional Council. The South Burnett is a peanut-growing and wine-producing region, with the beauty of the Bunya Mountains as its backdrop. Drop in to one of the towns in the region and experience the warm hospitality they all have to offer.

Blackbutt
Sitting along the D’Aguilar and Burnett highways, this easily-accessible town is perfect for tourists. There is a great range of restaurants and activities to explore, as well as their heritage-listed Butter Factory Building, Ringsfield House and Nanango Court House.
Chosen as Queensland’s friendliest town in 2008, Blackbutt’s community continues to wow tourists with its great service, as well as its annual Avocado Festival.
Yarraman
Benarkin
Located between the Darling Downs and the South Burnett, Yarraman is a special town with a range of activities for tourists, from a visit to the Yarraman Heritage Museum to strolling through the Yarraman State Forest.
On the edge of Blackbutt and the Benarkin State Forest, this quiet town is known for its wonderful natural scenery. It is also in line with the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.

Memerambi
Crawford
Located on the way to Wooroolin, Memerambi is an attractive little town well known for its unique “Stop Shop”. There are also many produce processing companies nearby.
This picturesque little town takes its name from the Crawford railway station named by Queensland Railways Department in 1904 after engineer Hugh Ralston Crawford, who supervised the construction of the Wondai-Kingaroy railway.
Tingoora
Wooroolin
Home to the famous Tingoora Pub, where Jimmy Barnes would previously frequent on regional tours, Tingoora is the perfect Australian destination for nostalgic tourists.
This town has been recently put on the international map thanks to Danger Close, a movie filmed in the Wooroolin area. It also has great cafes and the iconic Grand Hotel.
Wondai Another main town in the South Burnett, with many attractions for tourists. There’s the South Burnett Region Timber Industry Museum, Wondai Shire Regional Art Gallery and the Wondai Heritage Museum. It is also home to the two-day, annual Wondai Garden Festival. 06

This town proudly promotes Aboriginal culture within its community, offering many tourism facilities, including the Ration Shed Museum, a local art gallery, and the Cherbourg Men’s Shed.
This town is located on the northern end of Queensland’s newest wine region. Moffatdale is home to many of the South Burnett’s well-known wineries.
Proston & Hivesville
Murgon
Proston and Hivesville feature scenic hill-filled terrain, providing excellent views of the region, making it a highlight for tourists in the South Burnett. It’s also not far from Boondooma Homestead and popular tourist destination, Boondooma Dam.
Being the closest to Cherbourg, the region’s wellknown Aboriginal reserve, Murgon has much culture to share. Be sure to check out its visitor information centre, as well as its blast-from-the- past Queensland Dairy Industry Museum.
Durong
Goomeri
This small town is home to the Burrandowan Station Homestead, one of Queensland’s heritage-listed sites. There is also a school and public library in the town vicinity.
Goomeri is a small, friendly country town that is surrounded by beef cattle grazing and dairy farming country. Well-known for its annual Goomeri Pumpkin Festival, which attracts thousands of people to the town to participate.

Rich Agriculture & Ancestry
Region rich in crops, livestock THERE’S no better way to familiarise yourself with a region than to try its local produce, and when you’re in the South Burnett, you just have to try our peanuts. We are well recognised as the country’s prime peanut growing region with our rich, red volcanic soils making it one of the most ideal places in the world to grow peanuts. While peanuts are iconic to the region, there are a range of producers growing and raising quality livestock and crops.
Pork: The South Burnett region has a rich and sprawling history that’s tied intimately to the pork industry. Kewpie Pig Enterprises was established in 1969 and were leaders in the production and breeding of pigs along with building efficient piggeries. The region is also home to Swickers Kingaroy Bacon Factory, one of the major employers in the region. According to SunPork Fresh Foods executive general manager Rhys Collins, 95 per cent of pigs in Queensland are processed at this site.
Peanuts: Peanut began growing in the region in the early 1900s. In 1924 the region established the Peanut Marketing Board (now the Peanut Company of Australia) headquartered in Kingaroy. By 1930 production had climbed to 814 tonnes per year. Kingaroy peanuts can now be found all over the country and internationally.
Duboisia: The South Burnett’s red soil and climate also makes it the ideal location for native duboisia plants to thrive. Processing plants are used to extract medical-grade alkaloid from the plant to be used in various pharmaceutical products, such as scopolamine butybromide, which can be used to treat cramps, and scopolamine hydrobromide, which can be used to treat motion sickness and nausea.

Rich soils grow huge variety of produce Avocados: The region is well-known for its avocado crops, with the town of Blackbutt even dedicating a whole festival to the humble little fruit. Avocado trees thrive in Mediterranean and tropical climates and there are dozens of varieties of avocados. Hass is one of the most popular varieties and is often found in supermarkets around Australia. Beans and legumes: It’s not only peanuts that are grown at Kingaroy, but also white navy beans. Navy bean production began in Australia during World War II when it became necessary to find an
economical way of supplying a nutritious food to the many troops based in Queensland. The United States military maintained a large base in Kingaroy and had many bases and camps throughout southeast Queensland. The deep rich red soils of the Kingaroy area also enables the growing of traditional grains and legumes such as peanuts, sorghum, maize, navy beans, soybeans, wheat and barley.

Wondai Regional Art Gallery A HIDDEN treasure of the South Burnett, the Wondai Heritage Museum gives visitors a wonderful insight into the Wondai people, town and district, spanning over 120 years. It plays an important part in the region’s cultural life and development, and contributes significantly to the South Burnett’s tourism industry. The gallery is housed in the original Wondai Station Master’s House, which dates back to 1903 and is one of the first buildings to have been built in the country township.

Bask in the beauty of the Bunya Mountains THE Bunya Mountains National Rainforest is the perfect tourist destination if you’re wanting to escape to the countryside and get back to nature. Home to an abundance of wildlife, including wallabies and approximately 215 species of birds, it can be regarded as a natural sanctuary. These mountains are a key part of the South Burnett’s tourism landscape. Co-owned with the Darling Downs, the Bunya Mountains covers almost 12,000 hectares of land, all which you can view from Fishers Lookout. It’s also a great place to appreciate the Wakka Wakka land, as indigenous tribes used to gather in the rainforest for meetings from all around Queensland. If you are touring the Bunya Mountains, you have the opportunity to freely walk the rainforest tracks 14

and trails, hear the coo of the birds while birdwatching, and also enjoy some great cafes and accommodation options at the mountain’s peak. Exploring the great outdoors THE region is home to a number of areas where you can explore the natural beauty and wonder of the mountainous landscapes.
BOAT MOUNTAIN Head north of Murgon and you’ll come across the Boat Mountain Conservation Park. Named after a distinctive flat-topped ridge shaped like an upturned boat, the 589m Boat Mountain is a local landmark in the Murgon area. More than 130 plant species grow here and there are at least 46 species of birds including rufous whistlers, black-faced cuckoo-shrikes, double-barred finches, red-backed wrens and honeyeaters. You might also see black-striped wallabies, echidnas, pygmy-possums and sugar gliders.
MT WOOROOLIN LOOKOUT Venture just over 4km from the heart of Kingaroy and you will find Mt Wooroolin Lookout. The lookout was developed by Kingaroy Shire Council in 1988 as a Bicenntennial project. The mountain is a declared nature reserve and both the lookout and its immediate surroundings are maintained by Kingaroy Shire Council. Mt Wooroolin’s lookout is an elevated viewing platform that offers striking panoramic views across Kingaroy and the areas leading towards Kumbia and the Bunya Mountains in the east. The platform is accessible for all abilities.

BjelkePetersen Dam SINCE its completion in 1988, Bjelke-Petersen Dam, also known as BP Dam or Lake Barambah, has been a place of relaxation and recreation for many families in the South Burnett and beyond. It spans 2500ha and has a capacity of more than 1.4 million megalitres of water, which is used for irrigation and to supply water to the nearby towns of Murgon and Cherbourg.

Residents and tourists frequent the dam to enjoy a range of activities, including freshwater fishing, waterskiing, boating and camping. There are plenty of amenities available at the dam, including picnic areas, barbecues, a general store, a caravan and recreation park and a boat ramp with a large carpark. accompany it with a local drop from one of the many nearby wineries at Moffatdale. Many fishing competitions are held at BjelkePetersen Dam, including the BP Dam Inland Fishing Classic, due its bountiful supply of bass and yellowbelly. It’s also known for its red claw. As well as an abundance of fish, BP Dam is home to a range of wildlife and birdlife, including wallabies, koalas, pelicans and swans.

Explore the region LAKE Boondooma is a great place to visit in the South Burnett for those keen on wetting a line, taking the boat or jet ski for a spin, or finding a relaxing spot by the water’s edge for a picnic. The dam was built in 1983 to supply water to the Tarong Power Station, but has since been transformed into a popular recreation facility. Home to two boat ramps, the Boondooma Dam is the perfect destination for boating, fishing and water sports in general. Fishing competitions are often held at the dam, such as the Boondooma Dam Yellowbelly Family Fishing Competition, which has been hosted for more than 30 years. Lake Boondooma is also a popular holiday spot for caravaners, campers and visitors who make use of the onsite cabins and facilities at the recreation park, particularly during major events, celebrations and fishing competitions. South Burnett Rail Trails A FUN way to tour through the South Burnett region is by exploring our iconic rail trails. Rail trails are former railway tracks that are now multi-use paths for the public to access when they please. Through funding from the Queensland Government, a rail trail from Kingaroy to Kilkivan was developed in June 2017, allowing tourists and locals to enjoy the scenery while promoting a healthy lifestyle. In fact, you can often see people walking, biking and sometimes horse riding down these trails. The South Burnett also hosts part of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, that spans all the way to Australia’s Great Dividing Range. This includes local towns like Blackbutt, Linville and Benarkin. 20

To comfortably cater to visitors, there are toilet facilities located in Bernarkin and at MacNamara’s Camp. Some trail distances you might want to keep in mind are: Moore to Blackbutt is 33.5 kilometres, Moore to Linville Station is 7 kilometres, Linville Station to Bernarkin is 18 kilometres, Benarkin to Blackbutt is 4.5 kilometres and Blackbutt to Nukku Overhead Bridge is 3.9 kilometres.

State forests BENARKIN STATE FOREST As well as being home to a previous hoop pine plantation, it was also considered one of the best ironbark stands in Queensland. Among the scenery, you could spot ducks, kingfishers and waterbirds close to the creek line. There are also lizards, water dragons, freshwater turtles and the occasional platypus.
CUSHNIE STATE FOREST Spanning across 6800 hectares near Proston and Wondai, visitors can see a range of wildlife including birds and reptiles.
EAST NANANGO STATE FOREST Near the Yarraman State Forest, covering an area of 4200 hectares, the East Nanango State Forest is considered a good place for birdwatching, home to the eastern whipbird and the tawny frogmouth, biking and bushwalking.
MCEUEN STATE FOREST Covering 440 hectares next to Wondai, it’s a popular destination for mountain biking in the region after a series of trails were developed in the past few years.
SOUTH NANANGO STATE FOREST The South Nanango State Forest covers 690 hectares of land, separated from the East Nanango 22

State Forest and Yarraman State Forest, offering similar wildlife spotting opportunities.
WIGTON STATE FOREST In this forest, over an area of 5900 hectares, you can find the Boyne River, Geer Creek, Canoe Creek and Jondarby Creek. It was a popular resource in history for the old Wondai Sawmill, as it was known to produce impressively large logs.
WONDAI STATE FOREST This covers approximately 13,000 hectares alongside Wondai and Cherbourg, making it a great area to see a diverse range of birds and wildlife. It also accommodates tourists with its visitor friendly facilities, including a barbecue area.
WOROON STATE FORESTS Starting from the Woroon National Park, there are also two divided Woroon State Forests. Together, both forests cover about 4500 hectares of land close to Proston. These forests are known to be good for mountain biking.
YARRAMAN STATE FOREST Yarraman is also considered a destination of a previous hoop pine plantation. When visiting, you can find brush turkeys, bandicoots, a range of birds, and at night some owls and the near-threatened golden-tipped bat. KSBE01Z01FF - V1
History
History of the South Burnett THE South Burnett is a region with a rich history in agriculture, with peanut growing and dairy farming at its heart. To showcase this history, the region has a wealth of museums within its borders, allowing visitors and locals to take a step back in time. If you have the time, be sure to check out one, two or a few from the pages ahead.
Yarraman Heritage Museum COME and experience life in the early 1900s at the Yarraman Heritage Museum and Information Centre. Formerly a convent school run by the Sisters of Mercy, it’s now a museum that provides interest for the whole family. There are also historical buildings on site, including the Yarraman railway station, a 1930s farmer’s cottage and Rocky Hill School building. Brisbane Valley Heritage Trails THE organisation is responsible for many trails spanning the South Burnett and the Brisbane River Valley. The trails focus on heritage buildings, rail, timber, churches, cemeteries and memorials, stock and coach routes, racing and sporting trails. History
Boondooma Homestead FOUND near the banks of the Boyne River is Boondoma Homestead, part of Boondooma Station, which was first settled in 1846. Named after the traditional Aboriginal word for “hole dug in sand from which to obtain water”, that was used to describe the Boyne riverbed. Despite often looking like a dry bed of sand, it hides water just beneath the surface. The Lawson brothers established the sheep station in 1847, employing mostly Chinese and German settlers. As with most isolated sheep and cattle stations, the homestead offered the barest of necessities. It is one of the most well-preserved homesteads in the region, with trees and vines dating back to 1850. Buildings at the station included the homestead itself, a stone store from where supplies were 24

dispensed and a post office. As well as preserving and celebrating the region’s history, Boondooma Homestead also hosts a number of regular events such as the Spirit of the Bush Balladeers and Heritage Muster, Anzac Day and Australia Day celebrations along with Scots in the Bush. History
Ringsfield House RINGSFIELD House is a place where you can step back in time to enjoy the rich history and town culture of Nanango. The home was built in 1908 for Mr and Mrs James William Davies Graham and was designed by noted Queensland architect Robin Dods. You can go to Ringsfield for its cafe and restaurant, its esteemed museum, or make plans to use its popular ceremony and function venue. History
Kingaroy Heritage Museum THE Kingaroy Heritage Museum is the perfect spot for you to take a break and relax with your family, while still having fun and learning about the town’s history. The museum hosts fantastic historic displays of the Kingaroy region, supported by great volunteers that have a wealth of knowledge about the local area. Located in what was once the town’s power station, the Kingaroy Museum follows all the stages of peanut farming and production plus highlights some of the people that have called Kingaroy home, including Queensland’s longest serving premier. School groups can enjoy hands-on experiences 26
with activities such as the Peanut Detective Hunt and Museum Activity sheets. Tours can be arranged by prior request. It’s open seven days a week for your tourism convenience, showcasing the different stages of peanut farming through machinery displays and photos, the Kingaroy Heritage Museum also remembers early Kingaroy and the use of the Kingaroy Airport in times of war.

Wondai Heritage Museum worth visiting A HIDDEN treasure of the South Burnett, the Wondai Heritage Museum gives visitors a wonderful insight into the Wondai people, town and district, spanning over 120 years. The heritage museum is divided into several different themes including the Formal Museum, Hospital Complex, Machinery Shed, Slab Bard and Oddfellows Hall. Set in the heart of town, it’s an easy walk from the museum to cafes, shops, hotels, art gallery, timber museum and woodcrafters’ workshop.

BaconFest bigger than ever THE Kingaroy BaconFest has taken the state by storm and is expected to pack plenty of flavour again this year. The inaugural event in 2018 brought in 8000 people, all of whom recognised the importance of Australian pork produce. It is also the perfect way to appreciate the economic boost that Swickers brings to town as one of Australia’s largest pork processing plants. Bacon lovers also treasured the idea, as the pilot event brought $370,000 into the Kingaroy economy.

The huge success spanned a wide range of activities that had passionate locals and tourists involved for all three days. There were smoke-offs, meat competitions, Pin-Up Pageants, whip cracking, bacon eating competitions and a great range of food to enjoy. We also can’t forget the festival mascot, Bacon Man. After being seen as a great accomplishment, the event will return this year, and tourists are encouraged to book their accommodation as soon as possible. In saying that, we’ll see you back here for the third BaconFest, from August 21 to 23.

Goomeri Pumpkin Festival THE Goomeri Pumpkin Festival is an event that celebrates the local produce of the area, while letting farmers and tourists both have a bit of fun. The festival is also home to the Great Australian Pumpkin Roll, where originally 71 pumpkin rollers made their mark. After a successful inaugural event in 1997, the Goomeri Pumpkin Festival has been held every year, growing to become recognised internationally. Last year’s event had a record attendance of 18,000. As well as the Great Australian Pumpkin Roll, there are also other competitions revolving around

the iconic produce, including the largest pumpkin, best decorated pumpkin, the pumpkin pageant, pumpkin shot put, and much more. Avo go at this festival THE Blackbutt Avocado festival is always a highlight to the South Burnett Region. Formerly the Bloomin Beautiful Blackbutt Festival, the festival changed in 2016 to the Blackbutt Avocado Festival to highlight and celebrate their famous Avocados, but has still managed to keep the traditional charm and character that showcases Blackbutt as a whole.
Avocado Festival BLACKBUTT has Australia’s only Avocado Festival on the east coast. On Saturday, September 12, lovers of this bumpy fruit will flock to Blackbutt for all things avocado. This year will bring activities, including the now famous avocado roll, the avocado toss, the avocado parachute drop and avocado cooking demonstrations with Jason Ford. Wine Region
Our beautiful wine region THE South Burnett is famous for its wonderful wineries, thanks to the region’s warm, subtropical climate. The region’s variety of rich soils including clay red, brown and black clays are also optimum for growing. Vineyard farmers took advantage of these conditions, and industrial production began in 1993. The South Burnett is Queensland’s secondlargest wine region — home to two of Queensland’s biggest vineyards and more than half a dozen Queensland cellar doors — despite barely more than two decades of wine production. Wineries in the region offer a great range of verdelho, semillon, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and chardonnay. Regional wines such as shiraz, verdelho and semillon are often mixed with fruity flavours, including berry and citrus blends. The South Burnett Wine Trail is popular with 38

Nanango Visitor Information Centre THE Nanango Visitor Information Centre, also known as the South Burnett Energy Centre, houses a range of visually exciting interactive displays that highlight the past, the people and the energy technology that helped develop the region. The information centre is also home to the original engines that supplied the first electricity to Nanango in 1933, an important turning point in the town’s rich history.
