When it comes to choosing a destination to put down roots, there are a few factors one must consider. Educational facilities, affordability and a family-friendly feel, often top the list of requirements for those looking to make a move. Possessing all of these desirable attributes and more, Chinchilla offers residents a lifestyle that seems a world away from the fast-paced environment of city-living and offers the simple freedoms of a relaxed atmosphere. It is often thought that you must sacrifice space and tranquillity for a first-class education however, this is simply not the case. Chinchilla boasts a state high school, two state primary schools, a private primary school and a private Kindergarten to Year 12 college. Furthermore, TAFE Queensland operates a campus in the town, making upskilling and further education easily accessible for anyone interested. Another huge drawcard that seems to be enticing new residents and investors alike is the affordability of the region. The “great Australian dream” of owning your own home has become less and less attainable in recent years however, trading the larger cities for life in beautiful Chinchilla makes this dream a very real possibility. Sitting around the $200,000 - $300,000 mark for a sizeable, four-bedroom family home, you can enjoy life without the overwhelming mortgage stresses and financial restrictions that often come with home ownership.

south of the town centre, water-skiing and boating enthusiasts are well catered for thanks to an island to circle, unlike many other rural skiing areas that simply have a wide stretch of river. On warm weekends and holiday periods the weir becomes a playground for water sports, with a loading ramp, grassy banks and barbecue facilities. Camping at the weir is free, with a two-night-stay limit, making it the perfect place to relax on the weekend. Other areas in the town to enjoy the simple pleasures of water-side living are along the Charlie’s Creek catchment, which runs into the Condamine River. Once living in the town, locals love a good night out and Chinchilla’s scene has plenty to offer in that regard. Local pubs and clubs in the area offer a unique ambience, to appeal to a variety of residents. While in the past a pub meal was the standard fare for celebrations, today the culinary landscape has changed beyond recognition. Today residents have their pick of Thai, Indian or Chinese restaurants, along with a range of fast food restaurants to choose from. Chinchilla is truly brought to life biennially through the much-loved Melon Festival, which is a favourite of locals and welcomes visitors from right across Australia. Offering a lifestyle rich in history, with plenty to see and do and all the while offering the benefits of a relaxed, charming lifestyle, there has never been a better time to relocate to Australia’s beautiful ‘melon capital’ Chinchilla.

And without such worries, taking the time to actually live will be high on your agenda. Thankfully, beautiful family friendly places such as the Chinchilla Weir allow this to happen. Located 10km

MILES OFFERS RELAXED, CARE-FREE LIFESTYLE When it comes to a family-friendly town, look no further than beautiful Miles GIVEN the fast pace of life in the 21st century — now, more than ever — families are looking to escape the rat-race of city living and relocate to a place where their children can run free and enjoy the simplicities of life. One such place which offers this patricular lifestyle and so much more is Miles. From the down-to-earth locals, through to the community-spirited nature of the region — there is just so much to love about the place. The area was explored by Ludwig Leichhardt who, in October, 1844, named a tributary of the Condamine River, Dogwood Creek. When the railway creek crossing was constructed and opened in 1878 by the Minister for Railways, William Miles, the settlement at the area was named after him. The town had always been a thriving agricultural hub of sheep and cattle, but these days the market is dominated by several prominent stud cattle lines, and a strong cropping industry. In recent years the town, which is 46km west of Chinchilla, has experienced an explosion of activity as a result of the coal seam gas industry, with hundreds of new houses built, along with several new motels and large worker accommodation camps. The 2011 census listed Miles’ population at about 1800 people, however, the fluctuating nature of the CSG workforce means the area could have a population anywhere between that number and thousands more. A calendar favourite in the Miles district is the Back to the bush Festival, a Biennial September showcase of community activities and events that capture the town’s living history, celebrate its relaxed country lifestyle, and provide ample opportunities for community and visitor involvement.

HUB OF TOWN: Dogwood Crossing is the cultural heart of the Miles community, inspiring and entertaining those who visit. The awardwinning building has become a cultural icon for the region with its seven-metre tall stylised steel bottle trees forming a colonnade down the centre of the facility. PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED

LEAD A HAPPY LIFE IN THE MARANOA Home to the largest livestock selling facility in the Southern Hemisphere, Roma offers unsurpassed opportunities in the agricultural sector. It is estimated the Maranoa has 1-2 million head of cattle, representing approximately 13% of Queensland’s beef cattle herd. Investor interest in agriculture has continued to grow in recent years, and thanks to the drastic advancements in farming technology, the already exciting prospect of a life on the land is only further enhanced. Along with this, the commencement of the Roma North gas development in late 2018, which is part of the wider Western Surat Gas Project (WSGP), signals positive signs for the future of Roma. Projects such as these mean not only job creation and an economic boost for the region, but also improve the local investment opportunities from a property perspective.

Roma’s Easter in the Country is an annual town highlight with thousands of people flocking to the celebrations each year. IMAGE: Contributed There is no denying that in this day and age finding the right lifestyle balance and the elusive key to happiness is easier said than done. However, it would seem locals in the Maranoa region may hold the answers, with residents ranking amongst the happiest people in the nation in a 2016 Australian Unity and Deakin University study. As the administrative hub of the Maranoa region, the quaint town of Roma would have a lot to do with these great results and consequential contented locals. Life in Roma is focused around the outdoors and all it has to offer.

From the stunning Carnavon Gorge through to the crisp country air, the town offers an authentic “Aussie” upbringing which can often feel lost in modern times. The town’s immunity to the changes of the fast-paced world means children still enjoy afternoons spent playing in the streets and relaxing weekend barbeques with friends and family are regular occurrences. Roma’s foundations lay firmly in the agricultural sector and nothing is more indicative of this than the laid-back, country charm which emanates from the welcoming residents. And thanks to further developments in the livestock and mining industries in recent months, now is a great time to relocate or invest in this beautiful part of Queensland.

When it comes to schooling and amenities, Roma has it all – adding to the appeal of this unassuming Queensland town. Offering a complete range of retail and professional businesses which service the local and surrounding communities, Roma’s cafes, restaurants and specialty shops offer a touch of the cosmopolitan lifestyle without losing its much-loved country charm and hospitality. With a median property price of $220,000, the benefits of life in this part of Queensland are endless and help ensure the perfect balance between a lifestyle of freedom, which does not compromise opportunity or advancement. Matching its offering in the happiness stakes with the added incentive of economic prospects, Roma is a unique and desirable destination for anyone considering a tree-change.

AN OASIS IN THE BUSH For a life that is as picturesque as it is relaxed, look no further than the quaint town of St George in the Balonne Shire. Locals have long enjoyed the beauty of the region however, visitors are often taken aback by just how scenic the town is thanks to sprawling gardens and a gorgeous riverside walkway. Bauhinia trees in Victoria Street attract a great deal of attention, producing stunning purple, pink and white flowers in early spring and thanks to blooming jacarandas in November, St George’s stunning mature trees add quite the picture-perfect element to this already enticing part of Queensland and leave no question as to why it has been dubbed “an oasis in the bush”. The 2km riverside walkway along the Balonne River frontage can be entered via St Georges Terrace. Sunrises and sunsets are quite the spectacle, with the soft colours and river gums producing the perfect recipe for relaxation and leaving you feeling a world away from life’s stresses. And while the beauty of the town is worth noting, scenery is certainly not all St George has to offer new residents and investors. Community spirit and affordable housing are another two key elements which make a new life in this town an exciting prospect. The median price for a property in St George is $228,000, a far cry from the overwhelming costs of life in the city. Along with the affordability of the homes, residences in St George are brimming with character and charm and help to add another welcoming dimension to life in the country. The values and hospitable nature of the people in this part of Queensland are the nucleus of the community. Locals still take the time out of their day to stop for a chat and it really is a pace and style of living that ultimately gives you your life back. Raising a family in St George offers many benefits, with the schooling options on offer just one of them.

Glorious aerial view of St George at Sunset. IMAGE: Balonne Shire Council

With a state primary and high school in the region and one catholic primary school, education is well and truly catered for. Murweh Shire Council mayor Annie Liston.

A LITTLE further west and not too far from the Surat basin lies the Shire of Murweh. It is a major stopping point for visitors keen to experience life in the true outback, its rich culture, its history and art, not forgetting the natural beauty of our woodlands, rivers and native animals. Charleville is the main town of the Shire with Augathella, Morven and Cooladdi making up the shire’s smaller but equally welcoming communities. The main centre, Charleville, is a bustling market town of major historical significance. It is the land of the Bidjara people and was established as a township in 1865. It was named after the town of Charleville in County Cork Ireland. It is a pioneering town. Cobb & Co built their largest factory here, the railway line to Brisbane opened in 1888; It was a focal point for the early aviators; Qantas flew its first ever flight from Charleville; Rev. John Flynn established the Royal Flying Doctor Base here and the School of the Air (now School of Distance Education) continues to provide daily education for hundreds of children living on isolated properties and unable to reach mainstream schools. Today, more than 150 years on, the town has developed into a major service centre and visitor destination.

Schools, hospital, emergency services, medical and dental centres, shops and supermarkets bring people in from all over the region. The completion of Charleville’s new air terminal, major upgrade of the Cosmos Centre, the new Planetarium and Top Secret World War II Tours, the Royal Flying Doctor Base and the Bilby Experience, continue to draw visitors in from all over Australia. I really hope that you will find time to come and visit us in the not too distant future to experience the natural beauty and warmth of our shire communities. — Murweh Shire Council mayor Annie Liston

Dalby is a welcoming and relaxed region to raise a family. IMAGE: Tourism and Events Queensland

You can spend your weekends on the banks of Myall Creek with a picnic or good book. IMAGE: CONTRIBUTED

WHEN LIFESTYLE AND OPPORTUNITY COMBINE WITH the green light recently given to the $10 billion Surat Gas Project which is set to create up to 1000 new jobs, relocation to and investment in Dalby has never looked more enticing. This project is the biggest new resources project in Queensland in eight years, with approval being granted for 14 petroleum leases between Dalby and Wandoan. This recent announcement adds further economic stability to Dalby’s already strong market. It is predicted there will be a strong boost for businesses in the region and suppliers in the surrounding Western Downs should also benefit from the numerous business opportunities. Dalby has always been a wonderful, welcoming and relaxed place to raise a family and now with these economic prospects on the horizon, making the move to the Western Downs has never made more sense. Situated an easy 85 kilometres west of Toowoomba, Dalby’s accessibility to city services cannot be understated and offers locals the best of both worlds thanks to a carefree lifestyle without having to compromise on amenities. Located on fertile volcanic soil, Dalby has an extensive and diverse agricultural industry including cotton, sorghum, wheat and barley, adding an extra element to the possibilities of a life in Dalby and what it can offer you and your family. Agriculture has historically been a cornerstone of the community, boasting cattle sale-yards which have the second-largest throughput of cattle in Queensland.

Dalby is also the largest grain receiving depot in the state. Dalby’s population currently sits around 12,700, which positions it on the larger scale of rural towns however, one which most importantly still boasts a warm country atmosphere. It has been said that in Dalby you want for nothing, and thanks to first-class health services, schooling and plenty of outdoor family activities, this statement certainly rings true. THE Dalby Hospital is the town’s primary facility looking after residents’ well-being. Situated on Hospital Rd, the facility offers a range of services including surgical, pathology, palliative care, aged care and maternity care. As is the case with many other rural towns, housing affordability in Dalby makes the region extremely appealing, especially given the growth potential thanks to the Surat Gas Project. Whether looking to relocate your family or considering the region as an investment possibility, Dalby’s median house price currently sits at $238,000 as at March 2019. Given the town’s proximity to Toowoomba and Brisbane, firstclass local amenities and the current resources activity, the ability to secure a property at such an affordable price cannot be undersold. Quality education facilities, easy access to the stunning Bunya Mountains and a welcoming community spirit complete the idyllic atmosphere that is life in Dalby. The perfect place for anyone

looking for a rural life close to the big cities, Dalby combines relaxed country living, with the enticing element of exciting economic opportunity.

Dalby's median house price currently sits at $238,000 as of March 2019

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT WINDOW TREATMENT To get around this, consider a partial blockout that doesn’t require lining. Alternatively, consider a linen-look sheer curtain that sits behind the blockout (looking outwards) – this will hide the unsightly lining of the blockout sitting in front. 3. AVOID CURTAINS THAT SKIM ABOVE THE FLOOR

Carlene Duffy There are so many options when it comes to choosing the right window covering, from blinds and shutters to sheer curtains and blockout curtains. We navigate you through the minefield. t’s important to do your homework before selecting window treatments for your home. You need to have a really good understanding of the options available to you. Home makers use window treatments for many different reasons. It may be to add softness to a space through long, sheer curtains; to block out light to help little ones sleep longer; or to fit in with the architecture of a home.

Most curtain consultants will tell you that your curtains should be skimming above the floor. I followed their advice and I regret it. I want my curtains to puddle and create a feeling of opulence. Curtains that skim the surface feel uptight and also highlight the unevenness of your floor, should your floor level be out, which is not uncommon. Buy curtains with at least an inch of puddle and don’t be convinced otherwise. 4. GO FOR A COST-EFFECTIVE OPTION Custom-made window treatments can break the bank, but there are so many good off-the-shelf options when it comes to curtains and blinds. There really is no reason to suffer through glaring morning light disrupting your sleep or that icky feeling of wondering if your neighbours can see in at night. Go and check out your ready-to-by curtains, blinds and accessories options at the big box retailers, or, if you’re handy on the sewing machine, whip some up yourself.

1. THINK ABOUT LIGHTING AND PRIVACY Before deciding on any type of window treatment, ask yourself these three questions:

Be sure to consider what your window treatments will look like from the street view of your house. PICTURE: Dave Kulesza/Canny

· What do I need my window dressings to do? · Do I need full privacy or just partial privacy? · Do I need light blocked out completely or just diffused? Answering these questions will help you firstly to discern between a blockout blind vs. a privacy blind, a blockout curtain vs. a sheer curtain, or plantation shutters and so on. From there, you can look at practical factors, such as: · Do you have enough wall space to be able to pull back the curtain? · Which way does your door/ window open? 2. CONSIDER HOW WINDOW TREATMENTS WILL LOOK FROM THE EXTERIOR It’s easy to forget to consider your exterior when choosing window treatments. Blockout curtains and blind lining is not attractive, so if you have to keep your curtains or blinds shut for some of the day due to light and privacy, you’ll find the street view of the lining will cheapen the facade of your home.

TROPICAL GARDEN DESIGN IDEAS TO INSPIRE YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE The good news? “Water features are one of the simplest ways to create a tropical vibe at home.” 4. STONE PAVERS & WINDING PATHWAYS

Erinna Giblin Tropical garden design might sound like it’s hard to achieve, but once you know a few tricks, it’s much easier than you’d think. Tropical gardens typically resemble jungles with plenty of lush foliage filling every nook and cranny. According to Bunnings Greenlife buyer Kate Eggleton: “A tropical garden means bringing the key elements of the tropics right into your own backyard.” Bunnings landscape buyer, Katrina Gatt, agrees and says anyone can create a tropical garden theme if they know the right ingredients for success. 1. BRIGHT, BOLD FEATURE WALLS Colourful feature walls in your garden evoke a playful holiday-like vibe (hello Buenos Aires!) – and the good news is you don’t need to have loads of wall space in order to achieve this look. 2. BUILD A DECK “A deck is not only a great way to create a versatile entertaining area, but also a perfect way to add a relaxing feel to the space,” says Katrina.

Want to create a lush escape from the daily grind? Pathways are the answer, according to Katrina: “Winding gravel pathways and stepping stone pavers can provide any garden with a never-ending feel. “These types of pathways can be used in your outdoor area to create a focal point that leads to a water feature, or a secluded seating area.” 5. INCORPORATE BAMBOO Bamboo is often the hallmark of a great tropical space. Katrina says: “Place potted bamboo plants in your alfresco area, or use bamboo screening panels as a backdrop for all that vibrant, tropical greenery.” 6. USE FERNS FOR GROUND COVER Ferns are your best friend if you want to fill a space with lush greenery. “Not only a beautiful plant to add greenery and fullness to your garden, ferns work magic when it comes to ground cover,” Katrina says. “There are many hardy ferns available to outline your garden pathways and achieve a full, lush, tropical look.”

“Remember to choose good-quality timber, such as merbau, to complement the tropical feel and surroundings.”

“They provide the illusion of water trickling off tree canopies and through jungle streams.”

“By choosing tropical-looking plants and flowers, perfecting the landscape and tending to your plants on a regular basis, you can give your garden the feel of the tropics regardless of where you live,” Kate says.

PICTURE-PERFECT: Orchids shine in any space, but are really home in environments that have a tropical feel. PICTURE: Erinna Giblin

Here are her suggestions for plants that will work to make your tropical garden dream a reality: 1. ORCHIDS Beautiful when in bloom, orchids are easy to include in a tropical space. “Orchids are easy to care for and can be placed in your alfresco dining area, or out in the garden to add a pop of vibrancy and colour to your outdoor space. They prefer warm climates and can stay in bloom for up to six months,” Kate says.

Tropical gardens love a good water feature, like this one from Bunnings.

2. PALM TREES What says tropical more than palm trees? “The classic palm tree makes a great indoor and outdoor plant, and can be planted straight into the ground, or in a large pot for more flexibility,” Kate advises. “The palm tree is very durable and once fully grown can provide beautiful lines of shade on sunny days. Depending on where you live, you can choose from a selection of either cold and hardy or heat-tolerant palm trees to best suit your climate.”

A timber gazebo, combined with greenery, can bring the tropical theme to your backyard. PICTURE: Getty

3. BIRD OF PARADISE (STRELITZIA) Is it a bird or is it a plant? Otherwise known as the Strelitzia, the Bird of Paradise plant is ideal for a beginner gardener.

3. ADD WATER FEATURES “The addition of water features in your garden can make a huge difference to the space,” Katrina says.

“The native plant loves a good sun-soaked spot, and has stunning bright flowers that resemble striking tropical birds peeking through garden leaves,” says Kate.
