The 2011 census listed Miles’ population at about 1800 people, however, the fluctuating nature of the CSG workforce means the area could have a population anywhere between that number and thousands more. A calendar favourite in the Miles district is the Back to the bush Festival, a Biennial September showcase of community activities and events that capture the town’s living history, celebrate its relaxed country lifestyle, and provide ample opportunities for community and visitor involvement.

We navigate you through the minefield. t’s important to do your homework before selecting window treatments for your home. You need to have a really good understanding of the options available to you. Home makers use window treatments for many different reasons. It may be to add softness to a space through long, sheer curtains; to block out light to help little ones sleep longer; or to fit in with the architecture of a home.

Most curtain consultants will tell you that your curtains should be skimming above the floor. I followed their advice and I regret it. I want my curtains to puddle and create a feeling of opulence. Curtains that skim the surface feel uptight and also highlight the unevenness of your floor, should your floor level be out, which is not uncommon. Buy curtains with at least an inch of puddle and don’t be convinced otherwise. 4. GO FOR A COST-EFFECTIVE OPTION Custom-made window treatments can break the bank, but there are so many good off-the-shelf options when it comes to curtains and blinds. There really is no reason to suffer through glaring morning light disrupting your sleep or that icky feeling of wondering if your neighbours can see in at night. Go and check out your ready-to-by curtains, blinds and accessories options at the big box retailers, or, if you’re handy on the sewing machine, whip some up yourself.

Tropical gardens typically resemble jungles with plenty of lush foliage filling every nook and cranny. According to Bunnings Greenlife buyer Kate Eggleton: “A tropical garden means bringing the key elements of the tropics right into your own backyard.” Bunnings landscape buyer, Katrina Gatt, agrees and says anyone can create a tropical garden theme if they know the right ingredients for success. 1. BRIGHT, BOLD FEATURE WALLS Colourful feature walls in your garden evoke a playful holiday-like vibe (hello Buenos Aires!) – and the good news is you don’t need to have loads of wall space in order to achieve this look. 2. BUILD A DECK “A deck is not only a great way to create a versatile entertaining area, but also a perfect way to add a relaxing feel to the space,” says Katrina.

Want to create a lush escape from the daily grind? Pathways are the answer, according to Katrina: “Winding gravel pathways and stepping stone pavers can provide any garden with a never-ending feel. “These types of pathways can be used in your outdoor area to create a focal point that leads to a water feature, or a secluded seating area.” 5. INCORPORATE BAMBOO Bamboo is often the hallmark of a great tropical space. Katrina says: “Place potted bamboo plants in your alfresco area, or use bamboo screening panels as a backdrop for all that vibrant, tropical greenery.” 6. USE FERNS FOR GROUND COVER Ferns are your best friend if you want to fill a space with lush greenery. “Not only a beautiful plant to add greenery and fullness to your garden, ferns work magic when it comes to ground cover,” Katrina says. “There are many hardy ferns available to outline your garden pathways and achieve a full, lush, tropical look.”

“Remember to choose good-quality timber, such as merbau, to complement the tropical feel and surroundings.”

“By choosing tropical-looking plants and flowers, perfecting the landscape and tending to your plants on a regular basis, you can give your garden the feel of the tropics regardless of where you live,” Kate says.

Here are her suggestions for plants that will work to make your tropical garden dream a reality: 1. ORCHIDS Beautiful when in bloom, orchids are easy to include in a tropical space. “Orchids are easy to care for and can be placed in your alfresco dining area, or out in the garden to add a pop of vibrancy and colour to your outdoor space. They prefer warm climates and can stay in bloom for up to six months,” Kate says.

2. PALM TREES What says tropical more than palm trees? “The classic palm tree makes a great indoor and outdoor plant, and can be planted straight into the ground, or in a large pot for more flexibility,” Kate advises. “The palm tree is very durable and once fully grown can provide beautiful lines of shade on sunny days. Depending on where you live, you can choose from a selection of either cold and hardy or heat-tolerant palm trees to best suit your climate.”

3. BIRD OF PARADISE (STRELITZIA) Is it a bird or is it a plant? Otherwise known as the Strelitzia, the Bird of Paradise plant is ideal for a beginner gardener.
