Oh the seasonal chill of Toowoomba! It’s a unique city we live in, one our Melbourne friends understand but our tropical friends down the highway in Brisbane fail to always grasp. An actual winter in Queensland... gasp! My favourite part of winter in this city is early morning walks through Queens Park with tendrils of fog coiling around my ankles — eerie and beautiful. Our June edition is perfect to snuggle up on the couch with as you enjoy this month’s Urban Winter Rose fashion shoot featuring local ladies (p10-11). In this edition we celebrate the women’s rugby sevens teams that have sprung up on the Downs since our Aussie women won gold at the Rio Olympics (p16). We also chat with Gyton Grantley who stars in the Don’t Tell movie, set in Toowoomba (p14), and meet some locals driving Toowoomba’s collaborative fashion scene (p21,24,25). Happy reading and stay warm!

Po t l u c k a n y o n e ? Add some delicious mystery to your next dinner party One of the best things the Toowoomba climate offers is the element of cosiness. But while stoking up the fireplace, curling up with a good book is certainly comfort Havana, it’s not exactly the best for your social scene. So this winter, instead of braving the cold just to keep a healthy level of interaction in your life, why not start a pot luck group with your friends? While pot luck originated in The Great Depression years of the 1930s, it has since become a popular way for friends to catch up.

Pot luck simply involves everyone bringing along a dish. This can be themed or un-themed, but there is one rule to pot luck. One does not tell one what they are bringing to pot luck! Yes, this does sometimes mean you will have four meat dishes and a dessert, or a baked custard paired with a curry for mains, however that is all part of the fun! And the best thing is you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your own home. So this winter, create a group, turn off the television and get a little creative with your friends.

Don’t sweat it – winter’s a great time to keep fit and motivated BY HIT FM BREAKFAST HOST GABI ELGOOD

Grab a beanie and get moving to beat those depressing mid-year blues and flus I am a total winter baby! Not only was I born in June, but I thrive in the cold weather: I sleep better, I am more focused and surprisingly, I find it easier to get to the gym. I’m naturally a sweaty person — I stress sweat, my forehead drips if it’s above 28 degrees and my top lip beads if I eat anything spicy, so when I get my heart rate up and exert myself on a hot summer’s day I’m dehydrated before the workout is over. In winter, sure it takes longer to warm

your muscles and yes, it hurts to use your hands when they’re frozen, but I can push myself so much harder and work out for a lot longer without the fear of drowning in my own salty wetness. Working out in winter also has some added benefits: it’s estimated that a third of women will put on 5kg over winter and with the temptation of a daily warm hot choccy, without the gym I would definitely be that one in three. Gyming it up boosts your immune

system so you can literally run away from those fluey bugs and exercise can improve your mood when the black dreary winter sky is trying its hardest to bring you down. So layer up, grab your beanie and get moving. You know what they say: summer bodies are made in winter!

Child abuse exposed G

BY DARREN HALLESY

Everyone’s favourite bad guy Gyton Grantley plays a paedophile in new Australian movie Don’t Tell

YTON Grantley shot to fame in the first series of Underbelly, playing the role of one of Australia’s most infamous men, Carl Williams. As an actor, he loves to be challenged, and that was certainly the case when he took the role of another vile character, that of paedophile Kevin Guy in the new Australian film Don’t Tell which opened on Thursday, May 18. Filmed in Toowoomba and Ipswich, it tells the story of Lyndal (Sara West) who spoke up about the abuse she suffered as a boarder at a Toowoomba school.

As someone who grew up in Brisbane, Gyton has friends from the area, so the movie was close to home for the former Anglican Church Grammar School student. “I’m a Brissy Boy and went to ‘churchie’ as a student,” Gyton says. “Lots of my friends were Toowoomba boarders,” he says. “My age group was a little after the events of the movie, but I do know lots of people from that time, and it was close to home for me. “It was important to tell this story.” However, Gyton says it wasn’t the main motivation, as there’s many reasons. “I’m also an ambassador for an organisation called The Polished Man, which raises awareness and revenue to stop abuse against children,” he says. “It fits in perfectly to play this part and help stop the abuse out there.” Gyton has been heavily involved in a few children’s charities over the years, and wanted to be a part of this project in the hope that it encourages other victims to come forward and speak up against

sexual abuse. “It’s still happening today but what is changing is that people are having the courage to speak out…that’s why it was hidden for so long, nobody would speak up,” he says.

“Just like Lyndal spoke out and took on the church, we hope this film will encourage others to talk to friends and family, and speak out.” Playing the role of a paedophile may not be to every actor’s liking, but Gyton says it was an honour to be involved with such a cast. “On any given day there’s a whole variety of scenes to be shot, and I knew most of the cast already,” he says. “I didn’t get to work with Jack Thompson but I did meet him at a recent film convention, that was such an honour,” he said. Don’t Tell is in selected cinemas now.

F

rom a young age, she has been a die-hard Wallabies fan. However, when asked if she previously saw female rugby as a possibility in the Dalby region she said absolutely not — it just wasn’t available. After the triumph of the Australian women’s rugby sevens team in the Rio Olympics, Sarah Pearce of Cecil Plains realised this was an opportunity in the region and formed the Dalby Wheatchix — an offshoot of the men’s Dalby Wheatmen rugby union team. The Wheatchix are not alone: Goondiwindi Emus, Toowoomba Bears, Condamine Codettes and the Warwick Water Rats have also been inspired by the medal-winning team and this year joined the UQ Gatton and USQ Saints teams in a Downs competition. At the Wheatchix’ first training session only six women attended. However, as word began to spread the numbers gradually increased.

www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

Sarah poached four girls from the AFL Darling Downs competition and several more from touch football — herself included, as she grew up playing touch while boarding at Fairholme College. As the pre-season continued so did the training, requiring a twice-a-week commitment in Dalby.

‘‘

There has been a lot of effort to get ready and it will take a substantial amount of time to be as fit as I was before it happened. SARAH PEARCE

Four months on from the first training session, the Wheatchix decided it was time for their entrance into the competition. Unfortunately some problems struck, as captain and founder Sarah broke her

leg in the first match, restricting her from on-field involvement. Looking back on the injury, Sarah described it as truly disappointing. Sarah says the Wheatchix team had a lot of developing to do from the outset, but is incredibly proud of her team’s progress. "Our second major carnival has really shown that to have happened," she says. Playing against more experienced teams, the Wheatchix received a baptism of fire into the sport with their encounter against Condamine as their first pre-season victory. The Wheatchix finally tasted victory against the Condamine Codettes in round one of friendly fixtures, played at Condamine on March 25, where the Wheatchix also picked up several sponsorships offers. “Everyone wants to get on board, the involvement in this club isn’t limited to players,” Sarah says. Sarah is looking forward to returning to her peak level of fitness as well as helping the young up-and-comers in the club. “It’s nice they’re getting the opportunity and this is the perfect starting point for these girls.” Due to the growing success of the senior competition, the Dalby Rugby Union Club held a come and try day and successfully fielded a junior women’s team. Coach Rick Stone is an instrumental part of the team, teaching them everything they need to know about plays, the game and teamwork. In Sarah’s and the club’s perspectives the day showed the interest was there, even from women who’d never played. The come and try day also was successful in filling a complete under 15s team and scouting another player for the senior women’s team. Watching these women forming their plays, cheering each other on and at half time making sure their children in the spectators camp are drinking plenty of water, it’s easy to see the great culture that has sprung up around the Wheatchix. “To wear the Wheatchix jersey has to be something to be proud of, we are pioneering a path that hopefully many girls will walk down,” Sarah says. Botulinum toxin is a cosmetic treatment used to reduce wrinkles by temporarily paralysing muscles. Here in Australia, botulinum toxin is sold commercially under three names: Botox (Allergan), Dysport (Galderma) and Xeomin (Merz). Botox and Xeomin units are generally interchangeable, however, Dysport uses a different unit measure and so more dysport units are needed per treatment. The injections work, after a few days, by preventing signals from the nerve cells reaching muscles. This leaves the muscles without instructions to contract, effectively weakening them. They treat frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet, mouth lines, square jawlines and tight neck bands. Botulinum toxin is currently used to treat over 20 different medical conditions including severe neck muscle spasms, chronic migraines, post stroke and leaky bladder.

Recently two of our clients sought our advice as to whether they can request a potential employee to do an unpaid trial with them. This is quite a common practice used to help determine if the person does actually have the skills to perform the role they are trying to fill. To determine whether you can do this and not be acting illegally depends on a couple of factors. You need to establish if an employment relationship exists or if it’s vocational work experience. Some points to consider are: ■ How long is the arrangement for? ■ How significant is the arrangement to the business? ■ Is the work normally performed by paid employees? ■ Does the business or organisation need this work to be done? Many awards have clauses that cover on work trials and stipulate a minimum rate of pay.

Paying your deposit

To change the health of your skin, you usually have to change something in your skin treatment. If you’ve tried many different skincare lines and still aren’t satisfied, then there’s a good chance your skin hasn’t been properly analysed and a customised treatment developed for you. It’s important not to feel frustrated, remember the skin is an organ and sometimes simply needs new ingredients as it changes. A new skin formulation can be done for you on each consultation, as one solution does not fit all. The Plush moisture test is a vital part of seeing how your skin is in that moment, and customising your skin care accordingly. Remember, a little tender loving care can go a long way over the winter months.

Did you know that if you do not pay your deposit on time when buying a residential property, you are in default of the contract? ■ An REIQ contract for buying a residential property provides a section for a buyer to pay a deposit ■ If you do not pay the full amount of the deposit and/or pay it on the due date recorded in the contract, you are in default of that contract; ■ This means the seller can terminate the contract at any time ■ Even if you pay the deposit at a later date during the the contract, the seller can still terminate ■ You may lose the contract and the seller is entitled to sue you for damages to recover the non-payment of the deposit by you on the due date Before signing a contract, be aware of how much deposit you are required to pay, the due date and whether you can meet those obligations.

Q & A with

Kaitlyn Neuendorf

How long have you lived in Toowoomba, and how have you seen the city change? I have been back for five years (after living away for eight) and the change in those short five years has been nothing short of phenomenal. I love that we have embraced more culture and style while keeping the small town, homely vibe. What made you start Local Locale, and what’s the response been like? I wanted to inspire those that live here to appreciate and explore what we have and to encourage visitors to add Toowoomba to their ‘must visit’ list. The response has been so great and I am really thankful for that! I feel like I have built myself a little online tribe of friends that offer support and encouragement throughout my journey. Why do you love living and working in Toowoomba? Toowoomba is a great place to make something of yourself. The talent we have here is so incredible and surrounding yourself and being able to

work with those people everyday is a privilege. You can easily escape the rat race here and I feel that is so important when having your own business as a mother and need to take time out. What are you planning to do with the new space you are opening? One part is my own studio space where I will base my fashion styling work from, as well as continuing to produce social media content for local businesses. Attached to the studio is a larger collaborative area called ‘The Space’ that myself and fellow business owner Brooke Jones have come together to create. It will be used to house our newest fashion venture in selling sale stock and second hand designer clothing. The Space will have a fresh and inviting vibe to it and will also be used to host creative workshops and intimate gatherings for like-minded people — think flower crown workshops, private yoga lessons and the like. What is the location and opening date? We are located upstairs at 436 Ruthven Street in the centre of town. Opening day is Saturday, June 3.

Name... Eleanor Burgoyne but most people recognise me as Ellie Bee. Even some of my official certifications have my alias on them. How long have you lived in Toowoomba? I have lived in Toowoomba for 18 years this year, but I am originally from the UK. How long have you worked as a makeup artist? I did my first make up training course six years ago. What is the first fashion shoot you did? I was fortunate to partner with Smoke & Mirrors Boutique on my first fashion shoot. I remember feeling very nervous but equally excited at the opportunity. I was very new to the industry at that stage but working with the team on the day had me feeling very much in my element. The photos turned out amazingly! I definitely learnt a lot. My next fashion shoot was for Style magazine and it’s very interesting looking back on how much my make-up style has developed.

Give a Girl the Right Shoes andshe can Conquer the World

What do you love about living and working in Toowoomba? I feel like I have really seen Toowoomba grow. I love the community feel and that everyone is willing to help each other out. I have been fortunate enough to be surrounded by so many talented and creative people. I live just outside of Toowoomba in Goombungee and I never thought I would love the country life but it’s so peaceful and beautiful. What is happening in the creative scene of Toowoomba? There are so many cool art exhibitions that really think outside the box and push creative boundaries. I did some training a couple of years ago about the creative process and its really opened my eyes to the journey a creative goes on to get to a final piece, be it art, music, dance or something else. Describe your own personal dress style and makeup. Lots of black! I have a real range though — somedays I’ll be rocking an Adidas hoodie and others ripped jeans and boots or a high-waisted skirt and t-shirt. Make-up wise I love a warm smoky eye and I am a sucker for lipstick.

How long have you been working as a professional photographer? Over 10 years. You have a natural ability for fashion photography. What makes a good model? Definitely confidence, someone with knowledge of fashion and a great personality that can get along with people. What do you aim for in your shoots? To tell a story with the photos. Also its a team effort so for the creatives to all show their talents and to have fun. What’s your signature style for shooting? I love shooting high fashion editorial style with an edgy look. How did you learn your craft? Who is your inspiration? I learnt photography a long time ago but I’m always learning on every shoot. Other photographers that inspire me at the moment would be Billy Kidd, Georges Antoni and Steven Klein. Why is Toowoomba a great place to be a creative? Can you describe the

local scene here? Toowoomba has amazing creative people to collaborate with, whether they are makeup artists, hairstylists, fashion styling, models and artists, everyone brings their own flavour to a shoot. What four things do you always have in your bag when doing a shoot? Camera, lights, batteries and a bottle of water. What advice can you give to budding photographers trying to get published? Get a great team and shoot what you love and are passionate about — it will show in your work if you love what you are doing. Then lots of practice to develop your style! Some of your images are very powerful. How do you achieve this and how do you avoid the ‘pretty’ and ‘submissive’ poses that often accompany female fashion? My focus is on storytelling so I like the models to show emotion. I like to show the model as a person with personality rather than just a mannequin.

Caring for your jewellery Follow these care tips from Central Jewellers Toowoomba Jewellery is precious and often sentimental too, so it pays to look after it properly. Here’s how to keep yours looking its best. Diamonds ■ Because diamonds can easily scratch other jewellery, keep them in a fabric lined case. ■ Prevent damage by taking diamond jewellery off when doing rough work like gardening. ■ Diamonds should be cleaned regularly as natural skin oils can apply a film that reduces their brilliance.

Gemstones ■ Wipe precious stone jewellery with a clean, soft damp cloth after wearing. ■ With some gemstones such as opal, avoid salt water and chemicals like chlorine bleach, detergents, hairspray and perfume. Gold ■ Store gold jewellery carefully to prevent scratching. ■ Remove your gold jewellery when bathing, showering or washing up. ■ Clean your gold jewellery as perfume, fluoride in water or the

acidity in your skin can cause discolouration. Silver ■ In time silver will tarnish. Clean with a mild soap and water solution, then pat dry with a soft cloth. ■ Avoid wearing silver in chlorinated water and store in a dry place. ■ Ask Central Jewellers about rhodium plating which can be a reliable and low-cost solution to keep your silver jewellery looking shiny longer.

Anti-ageing Skincare Decoded Choosing the right anti-ageing skincare product is tricky. Brush up on the key active ingredients and technologies frequently found in anti-ageing skincare products. Armed with this knowledge, you’ll be ready to find a product that suit your skin’s every need. Hydration Hero Hyaluronic acid is a champion antiageing skincare ingredient that’s renowned for its ability to retain water. When applied topically, this equates to hydrated skin and a reduction in the appearance of lines and wrinkles. As we age, our bodies ability to retain water declines, which is where hyaluronic acid-infused skincare products step in. Patented formulations of stabilised hyaluronic acid such as NASHA technology improve hydration levels of the skin for days longer than naturally produced hyaluronic acid. The unique crystal-shaped NASHA gel particles are similar to naturally produced hyaluronic acid, however they have a slightly modified structure which allows for longer lasting skin hydration. Ultimately better hydration means more radiant looking skin and a reduction in the visibility of lines. Understanding Absorption In order for active ingredients in skincare products to be effective, they need to be easily absorbed. One such way a product can improve its delivery to the skin is through particle size.

For instance, KemSphere particles are ten times smaller than the particles found in most skincare creams. Smaller particles are able to form a microfilm on the skin’s surface, which then allows for a controlled release of beneficial skincare ingredients. The result is increased penetration of active ingredients. Barrier Patrol Effective anti-ageing products prolong the skin’s hydration levels by improving the skin’s barrier. Most standard skincare products are only able to form a temporary film over the top layer of skin. This means the skin is unable to breathe and once the product is washed off the skin is left dehydrated. On the other hand a skincare product with more advanced barrier control technology is less likely to dehydrate the complexion. One such technology is the Skin Lipid Matrix (SLM), which works by creating a base that mimics the skin in order to promote healthy water loss. Antioxidant Warriors Free radical damage is one of the major contributors to visible signs of skin ageing such as discolouration, sagging and wrinkles.Antioxidants are the only way to neutralise the effect of these free radicals. That’s why antioxidant laden ingredients are often included in anti-ageing products. Some of the commonly included antioxidant heavyweights are Vitamin E (also known as tocopheryl acetate) and co-enzyme Q10.

Ceramide Wall Ceramides occur naturally in the layers of the skin to lock in moisture and provide protection from outside irritants. However as we age, ceramide production declines effecting skin’s moisture levels and thus its suppleness. In order to bolster it, ceramides such as Ceramide 3 are often added to anti-ageing skincare products. Skin Renewal Specialist Skin loses its collagen as we age, which can result in sagging and wrinkles. That’s why peptides such as Eyeseryl are a common addition to anti-ageing skincare products because of their ability to encourage the body to repair itself by building tissue and producing collagen. The result; firmer and smoother skin. Peptides are particularly beneficial in anti-ageing eye creams because this is an area of the face that’s prone to losing its natural definition. Retinol Revival Retinol – which is a vitamin A derivative – is a popular inclusion in anti-ageing skincare products due to its ability to treat the visible signs of premature aging, such as fine lines and decline in skin tone quality. The presence of retinol in an anti-ageing product promotes the natural skin cell turnover process, which exposes new, firmer skin. What more could you want!

Wearing dark lipstick gives you a certian winter depth, a little allure, and adds a richness to your look. Warning: mistakes will be noticed. Dark lipstick is a statement look, so you need to get this attention-grabber right. Line Begin by lining your lips to ensure the lipstick can’t bleed onto your skin (bleeds are far more noticeable in darker shades). Fill Next, it’s not a bad idea to fill in your whole lips with a liner pencil. This is like insurance for your lipstick, and a great idea if you are wearing it all day, or for a long night. This ensures even through eating or drinking if a little lipstick wears off you are not left with bare patches on your lips. Apply to taut lips This ensures even coverage. Blot on tissue and then reapply. Tidy Using your liner again, clean up any edges that have smudged. Pop ‘Popping’ is a clever and easy technique to remove excess lipstick and make sure it won’t end up on your teeth. Simply place your finger into your mouth, make an O shape with your lips touching your finger, and pull it out with a pop. The ring of lipstick around your finger is what would normally have ended up on your teeth. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

Slick metallics These shiny, glossy hues are making a come-back Metallics have a long history with the beauty industry, but have been reappearing of late. Using a bronze, silver or gold shade of eye shadow adds a casual edginess to your look. While a classic winged look will always work well with this trend, there has also been a shift towards more dramatic or free-style looks using metallics. This trend is especially popular when themed with an urban chic fashion sense. Think faux furs, leather, skull-hugging braid and slick high ponytails. Metallic eye detail helps give your look a point of difference and can be used to give an elegant edge for evening events when paired with a more classical or subdued fashion styling.

Fancy a cuppa? Tea is one of Australia’s favourite beverages

W

BY KARA MCCOLLOM ACCREDITED DIETICIAN

ith winter coming on it’s easy to want a warm beverage such as a cup of tea to fill your stomach on a cold day. Some studies suggest numerous health benefits from tea including reduced risk of heart disease, slowing down some cancers and reducing the severity of liver disease. Tea is made from the plant camillia sinesis, a relative of the camillia plant found in various Australian gardens. The protective agents in tea are called catechins. The level of catechins depends on how much the tea leaf has been processed or oxidised. The major difference between types of tea is also dependent on their degree of processing or exposure to oxygen.

THERE ARE FOUR MAIN TYPES OF TEA:

■ White tea is made from young tea leaves and is the freshest type of tea and has the most catechins. ■ Green tea is also made quickly by steaming or heating the leave to protect against the breakdown of the catechins. ■ Oolong is semi-fermented meaning it is not processed as much as black tea but more than green tea. ■ Black tea: the leaves are exposed to heat, light and crushing. The caffeine content of tea varies widely depending on the kind of tea. Typically levels of caffeine in tea are less than half of coffee — a safe upper limit for consumption is no more than four cups per day.

In with a

bang!

Having a fringe can change your whole look… here’s how to ge the best ‘bangs’ for your buck.

W

hile fringes are one of our favourite (and quickest ways) to update your style for winter, choosing a style that suits your face shape is important. Square face ■ Similar width across forehead, cheekbones and jawline ■ Defined jawline Soften out the face by adding a long fringe that just grazes your eyes and feathers out into longer strands at each side. The middle of the fringe can be a little more feathered, giving glimpses of the forehead, and should be cut just below the brows. Try making it thicker on the sides. Round face ■ Face length and width similar ■ Soft angles ■ Wider, full cheeks A gently curved fringe, with a slow arch, helps complement a fuller face and accentuates feminine features. It may make the face appear fuller, so experiment to make sure it suits you. You want a thick, graphic cut for this look, as it will make your bone structure really pop. Heart-shaped face ■ Gradual narrowing to the point of the chin ■ Chin is fairly pointy ■ Forehead is generally prominent A sideswept fringe will help naturally draw the eye across the face, ending at your eyes to accentuate them. A feathered,

32 | June 2017

layered fringe is perfect for this look, with longer pieces reaching your outer eyes and shorter pieces around the height of your eyebrow arch. Oval face ■ Forehead slightly wider than chin ■ Face longer than its width ■ Face tapers down to chin The good news is almost any fringe can work with this shape face. However for maximum impact, try a pin straight, airy cut to accentuate the prettiest part of the face. Request a fringe that hits between the brows. Small forehead ■ A sloping, diagonal fringe makes a short forehead appear stronger and more pronounced. ■ Request a steep, side-swept cut which ends around the cheekbone in a subtle layering. ■ This fringe will require a deep side part. High forehead ■ A ‘swingy’ fringe is thick and holds more volume, helping to conceal the forehead. ■ A gradual angle can be incorporated to help open and widen the face a little. ■ You can part this fringe in the middle, or request a side-swept part. ■ Remember to start far back from the hairline to get the volume and weight needed to make this look work.

Hair As the seasons change so too does our mood for colour.

Something light and summery for summer is fun, but what are the current trends for the colder months? Here at Style we have been investigating…and it’s good news. They are beautiful! Snow queen grey /ash blonde Hair so light in colour that it’s almost ethereal. While this trend came in in a small way a few years ago, with more silvery tones, it is now back with more of a matte finish. Think chilled greys that give that snow queen vibe. Also known as the granny trend, this look can be worn with one overall colour, or darker roots. It’s the perfect colour for winter, as it matches beautifully with all the usual winter palette colours, as well as with the pastels, greys and neutrals that we all have in our wardrobe. Black to red ombre blend What is the major benefit of wearing this look over winter? Red is infamous for its upkeep, and the sunshine of the warmer months plays havoc on red tones. Ask your colourist to create the look by keeping hair black at the roots and gradually fading into a lovely warm tone of rich red. A good colourist join these seamlessly with a lovely ombre blend. This look will also make your eyes pop (especially those with blue or green) with cut that favour a fringe or face-framing style. Rose gold (pink tones brown) Oh lovely rose gold. This trend arrived in a flurry across everything from sunglasses to nails to clothing, and now it’s even made its way to hair. The darling of the colour scene at the moment, this trend gives your whole look an edgy yet subtle influence, and is super on-trend. A mixture of pink, copper and brown tones, rose gold adds some warmth to those winter blues. Brown to caramel balayage This look is beautifully rich and adds a little warmth to your look, without having the light summery tones of other blonde looks. Starting with a dark brown at the roots, gently fade out to rich, warm caramel tones and end with a lighter blonde-caramel for a sun-kissed finish. This style can also give you a look of maturity, without sacrificing style, which can be great for the office!

St Vincent’s looks to future Refurbishment underway for Toowoomba’s iconic maternity wing at St Vincent’s Hospital

R

achael Reuter and her partner Ryan Holznagel welcomed little Margaret Belle into the world on Mothers Day, Sunday May 14. Rachael says her experience at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Toowoomba was amazing, but having a family suite in the maternity ward would have made a fantastic experience even better. “My partner is very tall and struggled to be comfortable on the fold out lounges here in the rooms,” she says. “A larger bed would have made it even better and would make the dad be able to be more of a part of the process too. “It would also be great for families who have come in from out of town, we live only 30 minutes away but even that was difficult at times.” The current maternity wing of St Vincent’s Private Hospital Toowoomba is 20 years old — the Dorothea Divine Ward — and provides a premium quality service. However, to ensure the service continues to meet demand, plans are in place to refurbish the unit.

Also under-way is further expansion and modernisation of the hospital as a whole, with the recent commencement of construction of the Clive Berghofer Theatre Suite. This expansion project will add six new, state-of-the-art operating theatres, a new day-surgery unit and a 16-bed recovery area as well as a new kitchen. Since St Vincent’s is a private not-for-profit hospital with strong links to the community, it relies on community support to fund these expansions. As Toowoomba and the surrounding region enter an exciting era of growth, St Vincent’s looks to the future with confidence and commitment that generations will continue to receive care within its walls and, in turn, will give their support to ensure the best is available for the generations to come. St Vincent’s Private Hospital aims to raise $4 million to refurbish the Dorothea Divine Maternity Unit and will soon be launching a major fundraising appeal. Details will appear on the hospital website at www.svpht.org.au.

EFM Health Club’s Sue Watson shares some tips on how to remain active over the cooler months. Create a timetable As most of us would agree, winter brings on a change to our lifestyle. Create a seasonal timetable and change things up by taking your gym clothes to work so that early morning workout you don’t want to get out of bed for becomes your afternoon ritual — no excuses: straight from desk to sweat. Diarise your workouts by committing yourself to a minimum number of workouts per week — it’s okay to set the bar a little lower in winter but just make sure you stay focused and committed. Think about a training partner Having a training partner can help a lot if your goals and motivation are on the same level, but sometimes it can work the other way and pull you down.

Trends BY JESSICA KRAMER

Forget black and grey this winter, prepare for a pop of bright red, pink and purple

THE chilly weather has hit, and winter is officially upon us. But rather than bringing out your wardrobe of blacks, browns and greys, this season’s trends demand a pop of strong colour. Bright red, midnight blue, purple and army green are the main colours on the runway this season, but there are a plethora of other shades around as a bit of an 80s feel comes back in vogue. Bright pink is one colour particularly making a comeback. Long regarded as an untrendy material since its last spike in popularity, velvet is making a massive return. Another trend re-visiting this season is tailoring. Match these strong lines with heritage checks and tweeds or power dressing.

In regards to textures and fabrics, velvet is right at the top of the list.

Top tips to keep your winter months healthy Don’t let the chilly weather put a freeze on your lifestyle BYSHARON LABI BODY+SOUL

WINTER can be a trying time both mentally and physically. The days are darker, colder and shorter and our bodies become more susceptible to all kinds of winter nasties like colds and flu. While it sounds tempting just to stay inside and hide from it all, being proactive about your health and wellbeing will help ensure that you make it through the cooler months cold and flu-free, and in tip-top shape to enjoy the summer. Wash hands Sounds simple but it’s the number one way to stop the spread of germs. Experts recommend washing hands every few hours and in particular after using the toilet and before meals. Give them a wash after touching someone else’s phone or keyboard at work. Get vaccinated The seasonal flu jab provides 12 months of cover against the major strains of flu including the 2009 pandemic swine flu. If you’re considered at risk (for example over 65, pregnant, or have a chronic illness), the government picks up the tab.

Keep exercising It’s hard to get motivated when it’s cold and dark, but your body has to work overtime to get warm, so you can burn more kilojoules on that early morning walk or run. Find an exercise partner to keep you motivated, go to the gym or do laps at an indoor pool. Eat well Keep your immune system in shape by making sure you’re eating a healthy diet. For your body to be able to respond to infection, it needs to have enough protein, so enjoy lean meat, fish and poultry. Dose up on vitamins and minerals Iron, zinc and vitamin C are also key to a healthy immune system. But before popping supplements, boost your dietary intake of these substances. Look for dark, leafy greens and red and yellow vegetables, which are all high in antioxidants.

Stay hydrated Drink at least eight glasses of water each day. If cold water is unappealing when the mercury dips, try boiled water with a slice of lemon. The moisture will also help make mucous membranes, including those in your sinuses, more resistant to bacteria. Rest up Regular sleep is vital to staying healthy. Don’t let yourself get run down. Those who aren’t well rested are more likely to get sick. Clean up winter mould Mould can trigger nasal congestion, sneezing, coughing, wheezing, respiratory infections and worsen asthma and allergic conditions. So move your spring clean to autumn. Save your skin Cold air, wind and heating will dry out your skin, so keep your face and body well moisturised.

WEDDINGS The boy from down the road BY CLARE STANDFAST

The love story of Meghan Harris and Matthew Bryant proves that young love, high school sweethearts and — more than anything — love at first sight, really does exist. On February 17 the couple tied the knot at Preston Peak Winery in a stunning ceremony surrounded by their family and friends. “I went to Centenary Heights State High School for years eight to 11, and every day I would walk past this boy’s house,” Meghan says. “I was in love with him, I thought he was so attractive — he was the ‘boy on

the corner’ for four years. “We never spoke and I never knew his name but when I started at St Joseph’s College we officially met and I found out it was Matt.” Matt remembered her as the girl who walked past his house everyday, and while they’d never spoken, the pair started dating soon after that. “Meghan is a strong, passionate, caring woman that would do anything to help someone out,” Matt comments. “She is always thinking of others before herself.” The wedding had a simple décor, with white and green throughout the reception and bouquets of greenery as the table decorations. Candles were scattered on the tables and fairy lights were beautifully strung across the roof. The rings of the couple tell a special tale. Meghan’s wedding band is a white gold diamond ring Matt gave her when she was 17. “He gave it to me and said he promised

to love me forever,” Meghan says. “I have worn it every day since and then I got it resized and now use it as my wedding ring.” Matt’s wedding ring is his father’s gold ring. “His dad passed away three years ago from cancer and his mum gave it to him,” Meghan says. On her wedding day, Meghan wore a spectacular fitted lace dress from Ferrari Formalwear with a long train, with the lace in a delicate pattern of tiny flowers. The pair honeymooned in America straight after the wedding for three weeks, visiting Las Vegas, San Fransisco, New York and Los Angeles. In terms of the future, Matt and Meghan are excited. “Our plans include having children in a few years and, as Matt is a builder, he will also be selling our current home and then renovating a few houses,” Meghan says. Vital statistics Model: 2017 Subaru XV Price: From $27,990 Warranty: 3 years unlimited km Engine: 2.0-litre 4-cyl boxer petrol, 115kW/196Nm Transmission: CVT auto with 7-speed manual mode, AWD Consumption: TBC (current model 7.0l/100km)

S

ubaru’s second-generation XV small SUV will be priced from $27,990 before on-roads when it arrives in showrooms next month. The outgoing XV was priced from $26,740 with a manual gearbox, but the new model comes only with a CVT automatic gearbox (formerly a $2500 option), meaning a saving of $1250 over the old entry-level auto. The manual gearbox has been dropped from the XV range due to Australia’s overwhelming preference for self-shifters. The move follows Subaru also only offering its new Impreza model with a CVT auto. Popular in its segment as a genuine all-wheel-drive off-roader, the XV comes in four versions: the 2.0i for $27,990 (down $1250); mid-range 2.0i-L (up $100 to $30,340); 2.0i Premium

(down $600 to $32,140) and range topping 2.0i-S (down $300 to $35,240). Also helping on the financial front is a much-improved service interval plan for the new model. The 2017 XV now only needs serviced every year or 12,500km, whereas before it was every six months/10,000km. The new XV features X-Mode all-wheel-drive, excellent 220mm ground clearance, hill descent control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and impressive crash-preventing EyeSight Driver Assist on all but the entry level grade. All models use a 115kW/196Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder boxer engine, while the XV is built on the all-new Subaru Global Platform (introduced on the new Impreza), bringing improvements to body and chassis rigidity and stability.

The all-new Subaru XV is about to premiere. Delivering blockbuster entertainment and show-stopping value, the car that wrote the book on compact SUVs is back, bigger, brighter and better than ever before.

Key features standard across the range • Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive

• Smart key with push-start ignition

• Lineartronic™ CVT with manual mode

• Apple CarPlay™ & Android Auto™ connectivity

• Ground clearance – one of the best in its class

• Rear view reverse camera

• X-Mode

This year has seen a sharp shift in interior decorating trends already, and winter is only continuing this movement. Expect to see strong greens showing with enthusiasm as the cold weather hits, as well as natural textiles. While solid green on its own may create quite a cold feeling to your winter abode, incorporating the natural textiles can add some warmth. Rattan is very much in vogue, as well as cork and woven materials. Aside from this, green doesn’t necessarily have to be a cold colour. Teal is another on-trend shade of green and can be quite warm, especially when pared with warm metallics and natural colours.

WANT YOUR HOUSE TO BE PRISTINE?

www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

Large window openings maximises the northeast aspect’s of warming winter sun and cooling summer breezes.

Starting to build? Just point me in the right direction and all will be well.

A

t this stage you’re now the proud owners of a block of land that’s ticked as many of the boxes as you could get, and you’re armed with at least a rough idea of the kind of home you want to build. It may just be pencil sketches scrawled on your kid’s homework, or it may be architect’s blueprints, but the next exciting stage is about to begin.

Alignment comes first The first fundamentally important step in attaining a low-cost energy efficient dream home is placing it on your land so it’s facing the right way. This is so fundamentally important that it’s surprising how many get it wrong. The common mistake is to simply face it to the street. Where we live in the world determines this — the southern hemisphere. The weaker winter sun shines from the north, so that’s where you will want your living areas facing — to absorb as much as possible. Bedrooms ideally should face the east or south. Let your garage be the low-cost barrier from the intensely burning western Summer sun. If your house plans are still at the scrawl stage, this is a really good time to reevaluate where your living areas are in relation to this, and how your house will actually fit on your block. If your house plans cannot be altered, positioning your home on the allotment will be the critical trade-off.

Remember the main point — don’t waste money As the point is building a livable home that doesn’t cost much to build energy efficiency in from the start, and that costs less to heat and cool once it’s built, it must make full use of natural heating and cooling which comes at no cost. Therefore the cheapest heating you can get is the sun’s rays, and you want to be

Hot Summer Sun

able to store as much of that as possible. By the same token, the cheapest cooling is to stop that heat from becoming uncomfortable. The greatest energy expenses are in heating and cooling. That means building in heat retention qualities where they need to be, and stopping heat with quality insulation in all the right places.

It’s what you build in, that matters Size and placement of windows, choice and colour of building materials and how much thermal mass you build in, heights of ceilings, amount of roof overhangs, location of breezeways, patios and verandahs all have a direct bearing on passive heating and cooling. The next aspect is building in what you want — it’s your unique home. Do you need a large office? Extra bedrooms or bathrooms? Outdoor entertaining? Do this now at the planning stage — so you’re not later pulling down walls.

You’ve got a budget? Everyone does. Be comfortable with that. It’s not the size of your budget, it’s what we can do with it that is the focus. There may be trade-offs, but before sod is turned or a nail hammered, in you want to know it is your dream home.

— Geoff Gibson

Look for this column in next month’s Style... we’ll be talking about how to turn ‘energy efficiency’ from just a concept, into a very livable family home where everyone benefits.

Garden Keeping your garden clean and beautiful during winter can be a battle, as the cold weather ruins what you worked so hard for. However, maintaining your garden during this season is not as difficult as you think. Here are four simple steps that can help you in your battle and transform your winter garden. Winter flowers A good start to keeping your garden prosperous during winter is buying winter plants that can thrive during this period. Pansies are particularly nice as they are extremely versatile and flower far longer than any other winter plant.

They grow in sunny areas as well as partially shaded areas, making them easy to place. Feeding the birds You can create a lively feel in your garden by attracting birds to your home. This can be done easily by buying a bird shelter, feeding them or – better yet – both. Clean Keeping your garden area clean is an essential part to making any garden beautiful in any season.

So you need to sweep and clean your patio, decking and balcony regularly. Also, falling leaves and wet weather can easily create slippery surfaces and if left, may start to rot. Make sure that your plants are well maintained so that they always look fresh and alive. Colours Choose colours that reflect the cold weather like cool shades of white, black and blue. This helps your garden look fresh and beautiful.

Baby it’s cold outside Keep your fragile plants and young seedlings safe from deadly frost this winter BY JESSICA KRAMER

One of the biggest killers of plants in winter is the frost — especially if the plants are young or not particularly hardy. It’s important to keep your fragile foliage safe from the frost, but sometimes specific protection tools can be expensive. There are many protective jackets and blankets made from fleece and plastic available to purchase, but if you would rather do it yourself, here are a few ideas. ■ For potted plants that are still quite young, such as seedlings, cover the top of the pot with cling wrap overnight. Make sure you remove the cling wrap during the day. ■ For seedlings or small plants in the

www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

ground, recycle plastic soda bottles. Clean out the bottle and remove any labels, then cut off the bottom third of the bottle body. Place the upper section of the bottle over the plant during the night and early morning, then remove when danger of frost is over during the day. ■ Reuse those old bed sheets. Instead of throwing them away or tearing them into rags, place old sheets over your garden beds during the frost-danger time. Just be careful when removing the sheet the next day, in case any of the plants catch on the fabric. Otherwise, use stakes to keep the fabric

up off the plants. Finally, be wise in your planting. For any young seedlings or unestablished plants that are frost-damage prone, wait to cultivate them until the danger of frost is over. If you definitely can’t wait, cultivate your plants in a glass house or in a warm room indoors with plenty of fresh air.

Great winter read First, we make the beast beautiful: a new story about anxiety by Sarah Wilson

A Dog’s Purpose

Comedy-drama / Starring Britt Robertson, Dennis Quaid, Josh Gad / 100 minutes

We don’t deserve dogs, and the latest pup picture A Dog’s Purpose only serves to prove it. The film follows Bailey, a golden retriever who finds his way into the loving arms of eight-year-old Ethan. They share a close bond and happy life, but as nature takes its course, Bailey passes on – but that’s not the end. The story continues to follow Bailey as he is reincarnated into the bodies of many different dogs, belonging to many different owners, until he is reunited with Ethan again.

On the big screen

This book is challenging, but in a good way. Author Sarah Wilson (I Quit Sugar) writes in a friendly, chatty but bluntly to-the-point style. She touches on depression, OCD, PTSD, bulimia, insomnia, autoimmune diseases and most forms of ‘traditional’ anxiety. Because there are times when Wilson simply declares a statement she believes to be true first and then gradually wades into her reasoning behind this prognosis, the first quarter of this book does require a patient and open mind. Overall, at its core the book asks a question: what if we look at anxiety in a more positive light? Before you throw this magazine across the room, understand that Wilson is not trying to make us embrace or celebrate anxiety. She is simply challenging us to say ‘I have this thing, so I might as well make it work for me rather than always fighting against it, since I’m stuck with it anyway’. An interesting thought.

Artist Former TGS student ‘Brolga’ chats to Style

What are your biggest inspirations for your art? Travel inspires my work the most. I have an insatiable travel bug that’s taken me to some far-flung and really interesting places. I find new ideas easy to come by in fresh surroundings. Describe your style? My style has been described as pop surrealism. I love to mix daydream-like doodles with simple iconography and old graphic design styles. Saying that, my style continues to evolve as I find my strongest voice. How has it evolved? My art style evolves naturally from the new work that I do, such as painting murals on the street or brainstorming in my studio. To keep things fun and exciting, I’m always trying new things and pushing in a few directions . What influence has travelling/ living abroad had on this?

I’ve lived in some really interesting places like Tokyo, Seoul, Galway, and New York — I like to soak up my surroundings and that’s filtered back through my work. I recently visited the ancient Egyptian art exhibit at The Met in New York and am now considering ways to factor their concepts into my own work. Your art often depicts characters that your fans can get to know. Why do you like to incorporate these? Drawing characters has always been my thing since I was a kid. While living in New York, I began creating artwork in the public realm by wheat pasting life-sized versions of my characters around the city. It was cool to see drawings from my sketchbook get a life of their own, living and breathing with the city. Once the characters are out there, they wear with the city and become a part of the daily life.

TGS old boy Brolga, who is currently exhibiting in the new World Trade Centre, New York City, will be exhibiting at the

Grammar Art Show

March 24-25, 2018

Will you return to paint a piece in Toowoomba one day? I ’ll be back in Australia in 2018 and it would be amazing to be invited to Toowoomba to paint a wall. I grew up there and the city left a colourful mark on me. It would be nice to put a few marks back on it. What is the piece you are most proud of to date? I illustrated my first piece for the New York Times this year! I was really excited about that. It had been a dream of mine for years and I was totally flattered to get the commission. Describe the feeling of seeing your work hanging in The World Trade Centre. The World Trade Centre exhibition was an unbelievable experience to be involved with! It was a dream come true to show my work next to the heavyweights of the art world.

weekends and many friends to spend time with. This man is just one of many people I met over the weekend who are more than happy to have a friendly chat with tourists and tell their story. There are many events on at Olympic Park, I discover as I manage to secure an early check-in at the hotel, but the one I’m here for is held a leisurely 15-minute stroll down the road — the Dollhouse and Miniature Fair. Cyclists meander past in couples and families, while small children play in the fountains as their parents chat nearby in the warm sunshine. Were it not for the far-off thrum of traffic, it would be easy to forget I’m actually in Australia’s biggest city. I make an impromptu decision to spend Sunday at Darling Harbour. After all, it has been a good decade since I was there last, and now Aquarium Wharf has a Madame Tussauds wax museum as well as the

aquarium and zoo. Some research reveals I need to catch a bus and then a train before walking the last 20 minutes to Darling Harbour. Turning the corner brings me face-to-face with the wharfs of Darling Harbour — a hub of activity that strangely keeps a very laidback feel with bright blue water. While you could probably spend all day exploring here, I head straight to Madame Tussauds as there is limited time before I have to catch the train to the airport. Aside from seeing many of my favourite famous people as realistic wax figures, the best part of the visit is getting my very own wax handmade. Before I begin the journey home via the massive Paddington Market, I stop for lunch at Nick’s. As I sip on my beer, I ponder the weekend and come to the conclusion that it was well-worth the trip and should be repeated soon.

As someone who lived only an hour south of Sydney until eight years ago, I thought I had seen all the city had to offer. But only a weekend in this multicultural hub proved otherwise. “Sydney just keeps spreading — everyone comes here,” my Uber driver tells me on our way to Olympic Park for the Saturday. I spot a nice Lamborghini on the highway and idly make comment on how it’s one of my dream cars. “Never say never,” he says firmly, explaining how he moved to Australia from Uganda without knowing where he was going or what he was doing. He got chatting to a Sydney-sider on the plane over, who gave him advice for work, housing, finding friends, and permanent residency when the time came. It’s been 18 years since then, and now he has his own home in Sydney, a good full-time job with Uber on the

Super savings BY LEANNE MCDONALD CREATE FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS

Tasks to tackle before June 30 WINTER is here, the perfect time to rug up and plan a mid-year break to the snow or to warmer climates. But before you head off, June is also the month to take advantage of any last minute opportunities to reduce your tax bill before the end of the financial year. With new regulations set to become part of Australian superannuation law, some of the rules around super contributions and the tax breaks available will change from 1 July 2017 — the biggest superannuation shake-up in 10 years. There are some key decisions to be made

that can have a long-lasting effect on your retirement nest egg. These may include: Maximising concessional contributions prior to the reduction in these thresholds from 1 July 1 2017. This may be achieved through salary sacrifice measures or personal concessional super contributions. Maximising non-concessional contributions utilising the existing bring forward thresholds. Consider that there will be a reduction in the annual non-concessional super

contributions limit from $180,000 to $100,000, which will result in a reduction from $540,000 to $300,000 using the bring forward rule. Review existing transition to retirement pensions. Consider the impact of the loss of tax-free status from 1 July 2017. Where spouses have unequal member balances and one is approaching or exceeding $1.6 million, identify whether a recontributing strategy can be used to equalise your member balances.

Katherine Marshall, senior solicitor, has been named as a finalist in the Family Law category of the Lawyers Weekly 2017 30 Under 30 Awards. and dedication to clients and the practice of family law more broadly. After returning to family law in early 2016 following a number of years in other practice areas, Katherine has made her place as a highly regarded young practitioner in the Toowoomba community. Katherine was admitted to practise law in 2011 and holds a Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Criminology as well as her Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice. Parenting matters are a particular

interest for Katherine, especially seeking a positive resolution for children in a co-parenting situation. A local Toowoomba girl, Katherine attended St Saviour’s and Downlands, returning to town after completing her university studies in Brisbane. The Lawyers Weekly 30 Under 30 will be announced at an awards evening in Sydney on Friday, June 23 and our whole team will be cheering for Katherine from Toowoomba, Brisbane and Ipswich.

The perfect parent myth Supernanny star Jo Frost chats about what makes the ideal parent BY LIZ WALSH

If there’s one thing that makes a perfect parent, it’s imperfection: so says one of the most recognisable global parenting experts, Jo Frost. Frost (pictured) became a no-nonsense phenomenon with the worldwide television series Supernanny. She told News Corp Media from her London home that the “smoke and mirrors” of social media only added to the pressures to be the perfect parent.

‘‘

We all screw up, we make mistakes, we get a bit lazy.” JO FROST “The reality is ... messier,” she said. “The perfect parent doesn’t exist — no one is perfect.” “I understand and celebrate that (sort of) parent but, at the same time, I don’t think it’s okay to celebrate not doing anything all the time.” She said the most common mistake modern-day parents made was using quick fixes to curb behaviour. “We live in the kind of world where we

want immediate gratification, we want everything yesterday and that our techniques will work in five minutes,” Jo says. “But there are no shortcuts in parenting. “If you make a decision and it’s a quick fix, it turns around and bites you on the bum.”

NAPLAN is not the only indicator Students in years three, five, seven and nine across Australia complete the annual National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy tests. BY ROBYN COURTNEY

I’m still not convinced this assessment is a beneficial use of resources, time and money. NAPLAN, developed collaboratively by the Australian, state and territory governments and non-state school sectors, was never intended to solely measure student knowledge or the competencies and abilities of the school they attend. Yet authorities, schools, teachers and parents seem to place great emphasis on this, becoming excited if students score off the banded scale.

However if dots fall below the national average, evidently it is a bad reflection on students and schools alike. A one-off test does not factor in the many elements that make up an individual, nor does a table showing figures of how a school performed overall tell the real story. NAPLAN should be a tool to help schools identify strengths and weaknesses in their learning programs. The results don’t need to be listed in the public domain.

If you’re choosing a school based on NAPLAN results, I would delve a little deeper. Testing the skills of reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy that are supposedly essential for every child to progress through school and life, is an interesting concept. More time giving students learning experiences to progress through life would be more beneficial I expect. Instead many schools waste time teaching to these tests and having students complete practice exams.

Festival time! Held over May 20 and 21, the Hampton Festival and Art Exhibition was a huge success It’s a festival under the gumtrees that delights more visitors each year over May. The Hampton Festival, a medley of arts, cooking demonstrations, kids activities, local produce stalls and live music, once again has patrons enraptured. The weather turned on its charm also for the day, with blue skies and sunshine over a strong crowd of thousands through the gates. The festival is a favourite on the local calendar, and showcases local produce on offer. With wines on showcase from Stanthorpe and even further afield at St George, sheep cheese, apples, dragonfruit, locally brewed coffee and pulled pork and slaw burgers, Hampton Festival has something to offer everyone. There was also children’s entertainment and cooking workshops, as well as demonstrations from a lineup of interesting chefs including celebrity chef Paul West of River Cottage television series fame. Paul had the crowd enthralled with his multitasking of comedy and cooking.

Chocolate Mango entremet

CUISINE BY JESSICA KRAMER

Following the completion of post-graduate training at the Australian Patisserie Academy in Sydney, Tony of Antony’s Bakery and Patisserie is close to releasing a new range of delicious and breathtakingly beautiful treats.

The perfectly defined layers of this unexpected combination makes it a sight to behold. I’m told this dessert has taken Tony several days to make. The smooth layer of mango gel alone needs to set for a day before being assembled into the rest of the cake, which consists of hazelnut dacquoise and chocolate mousse. When I taste it, I am rendered unable to give feedback for a solid minute as it is a fabulous combination and so smooth in texture. The dacquoise adds just enough crunch to the entremet to finish.

These amazing treats will be available very soon

Open 6am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday, and 6am to 4.30pm Saturday and Sunday

Glazed brownie with chocolate mousse, and Mango caramel sable

Admittedly, brownie is my main guilty pleasure — so glaze one and put rounds of perfectly smooth chocolate mousse on top with a daisy chocolate transfer, and I’m in heaven. Next on the table were perfectly glazed red and orange hemispheres mounted on a sable base (a French shortbread-like biscuit). The slightly bouncy mound is a caramel crémeax shell with a mango filling.

Follow Antony’s Bakery and Patisserie on Facebook and Instagram

Hazelnut Chocolate entremet

This glossy dessert is embellished with edible silver dusted Malteasers and curls of chocolate. It seems a sin to cut into the perfect surface, but when the cake is opened it reveals perfect layers and a mouth-watering scent of sweet and nutty chocolate. The base layer is a hazelnut dacquoise, while the top layer is a caramel crémeux, all encased in the smoothest chocolate mousse I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. This rich dessert has an ideal balance of hazelnut and chocolate. The entremet is finished with a modern glaze and edible silver dust. Visit Antony’s Bakery and Patisserie at Shop 11, 52 High St, High Street Shopping Centre or call 4613 5531

www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

These delicious treats will be available along with Antony’s standard range of pies, pastries and sourdough breads.

Virgo Aug 24 – Sept 24 Get ready — this is the time to start planning your holiday. Start saving as you will want to spend up big, because having a great time is the focus this month. No one wants to go on holiday and worry about money.

Capricorn Dec 22 – Jan 20 Time to get your thinking cap on over June. What is you want to achieve regarding your life ambition? Whether you want to be a singer or corporate big wig, it is one of the best months for decision making on your future.
