COMMUNITY

EDITOR’S WELCOME

I

t’s definitely frosty — the fog is rolling in most mornings, the unforgiving wind is whipping its way into each day — yes, as usual, Highfields is giving us a winter to remember. Nevertheless, it is beautiful, and I adore seeing the leaves turn golden and red at this time of year. In this edition of Highfields’ Own I’m very excited to introduce you to the wonderful Jackwitz family — or, as they’re more commonly known, The Barefoot Farmers. They grace our cover this month at their beautiful farm in Groomsville, between Hampton and Crows Nest. Their story begins on page 12 — it’s something you won’t want to miss. I’m very excited to say that in this edition we’ve invited some friendly faces back to write regular columns for us! Many of you will remember our two most recent cover ladies — Meringandan blogging sensation Bindy Scott from the February/March edition of Highfields’ Own, and Highfields registered kinesiologist Amy Manz from our April/May edition. We’re so excited to have the contributions of these wonderful women in our magazine. See Amy’s column on page 21 and Bindy’s column on page 23. As always, don’t hesitate to say hello — we love hearing from you! I hope you enjoy this edition. My best,

OUR PEOPLE Meet Susan Jones, a Highfields local who is avidly involved in the community How long have you lived in Highfields? I have lived in the Highfields region for around nine years now and work in Highfields. What brought you to the Highfields region? My husband and I loved the idea of raising our children in a family oriented community. We live in a quiet street on half an acre which is perfect for our children to be able to kick a soccer ball and ride their bikes. The quality schools and extra-curricular opportunities for them is also a big plus. How have you seen the region change since you have been living and working here? There is so much growth in the region. The development of the new sporting complex is an amazing addition to Highfields as well as two fantastic high schools. There are so many families moving to the area to give their children a taste of the country lifestyle while still being close to everything they need. How do you participate in the community? I am one of the organisers of the Highfields Village Markets which are on the second Saturday of every month. I am also the media coordinator and one of the canteen convenors for the Highfields Football Club and I’m a teacher at Mary MacKillop Catholic College.

What do you love most about the Highfields region? The thing I love the most about Highfields is the community. I am involved in many facets and I love that I can be a part of such a wonderful place with great people. Where is your favourite Highfields region hotspot? I enjoy visiting the many amazing local cafés we have in the region. What would you like to see for the Highfields region in the future? I would like to see some more options for young people in the area. More parks for little ones and something to keep teenagers occupied would be great. Where do you like to take friends or family members when they come to the area? We love taking people to eat at the Highfields Tavern or the Meringandan Pub. We also love to explore the Cuckoo Clock Centre or Danish Flower Art. The Highfields Village Markets are amazing! Describe a favourite memory from your time in Highfields? My favourite time over the last few years has certainly been becoming more involved in the local community by starting (with my amazing friend Amy Manz) the Highfields Village Markets. It has been an honour to create a beautiful market to showcase and support locals.

STELLAR SERVICE

STELLAR SERVICE We chat with Erin Wills from Herbal Harmonies about what makes her business a hit in Highfields

W

hat do you think makes stellar service? Stellar Service is simply listening and taking the time with our customers to make their shopping task as easy and enjoyable as it can be. Both myself and my staff are at an age where we experienced good service in our younger days and fully appreciated it. We like to greet our customers and offer any help they may require but generally find most people like to browse our extensive range of product first. I believe a large part of stellar service is taking the time to do everything we can to help our customers and always strive to be better at what we do and not becoming complacent. How old is Herbal Harmonies? I purchased Herbal Harmonies in 2006. Originally my daughter Krystal and I ran the shop. Unfortunately Krystal developed a debilitating health issue and had to retire from the shop. She still takes a keen interest in Herbal Harmonies and now resides in Miles and retains many friendships made while at Herbal Harmonies. What do you pride yourself on? I pride myself on the way Herbal Harmonies has evolved over the years, keeping pace with what Highfields residents require, and just generally keeping up with progress and new and different products. I never want products in Herbal Harmonies that people can buy at Target or large outlets. I spend many hours researching special, collectible and useful gifts of high quality to offer our customers. In the past couple of years I have introduced the Jendi range of clothing. In winter we have warm scarves, hats, ponchos, wraps and gloves, and this line has been well received with clients returning each year — some travelling from Brisbane, Ipswich

and as far away as Chinchilla as well as our local residents. As a bonus both I and my staff have made many long lasting friendships with our clients over the years. What do you attribute your success to? Herbal Harmonies owes its longevity to the commitments of myself and my wonderful staff. My staff have been with me for some time now and customers like to see a familiar and friendly face when they return to visit us. Janelle has been with me for over seven years, Karen has been working here for over six years and Loraine two years, with hopefully many more years to come. My staff are knowledgeable of our products and I appreciate their input when we are ordering products. All the girls and myself reside here in Highfields and Kleinton and are active members of the community. What’s in the future for Herbal Harmonies? I would hope that Herbal Harmonies continues as a boutique gift shop. The name can sometimes be misleading especially allowing for the huge diversity of products we now stock. A few years ago I tried to change the name to The Village Green Gift Shoppe, but locals seemed to like the old name of Herbal Harmonies better, and so it remains today. We will answer to either, but generally referred to as Herbal Harmonies. I appreciate that local residents come to visit us time and time again. Herbal Harmonies is happy to be part of this community and always looking to improve our product and service. I hope people will always take time to simply pop in to say hello or to suggest a new product line to help continue to meet the locals requirements. I am always happy to listen, as are my wonderful staff members.

Walt, Shannan, Brett and Roman Jackwitz - The Barefoot Farmers.

PHOTOS: TIM SWINSON PHOTOGRAPHY

THE GRASSROOTS APPROACH The Jackwitz family of Groomsville are paving the way with self-sustainable farming and the world knows about it via social media BY CLARE STANDFAST

I

instantly noticed Shannan Jackwitz tucked neatly in the corner of a café, a glowing, natural smile meeting my face when we recognised one another. So this is the wife and mother behind The Barefoot Farmer, I thought. All I could do was grin and laugh in her presence. “So,” I said, “tell me about your family.” And that’s where we began. Wife to Brett and mother to four-year-old Walt and three-year-old Roman, Shannan coordinates The Barefoot Farmer, an international online hit on Instagram and Wordpress, where she posts about her family’s life on their self-sustainable Groomsville farm between Hampton and Crows Nest. “We’ve got cattle, pigs, about 40 chickens, a jersey cow called Joyce and her calf, vegetable gardens and herbs,” Shannan says. “Our sign at the gate says go slow, free-range children, because they’re always out and about ... they’re totally free-range!” Besides wrangling animals (and children) on the farm, Shannan works within The Wellbeing Cottage in Highfields, nestled in behind The Chocolate Cottage. The naturopathy and herbal medicine clinic offers, among other things, complimentary therapies, nutritional supplements and diet and lifestyle advice. 12

|

June/July 2017

“That’s my passion, that’s what I did before kids, and it’s great to be back in that environment,” Shannan says. “I have a room where I do naturopathic consultations.” Originally from Charleville, Shannan has lived in Dubai, Ireland, the Gold Coast, Toowoomba and the Whitsundays to name a few, and Brett is from outside of Kingaroy.

Our sign at the gate says go slow, free-range children, because they’re always out and about ... they’re totally free-range!

— SHANNAN JACKWITZ

,

While their backgrounds are an eclectic mixture of city and country, their lifestyle at Groomsville is no mistake. “Roman was critically ill for the first four months of his life, he had multiple surgeries, and basically our family had to move to Brisbane — we rented a place near the hospital,” Shannan says. “He had an amazing recovery ... we had some amazing doctors in Brisbane, and an amazing chiropractor here in Toowoomba that

FEATURE

travelled to Brisbane just to treat Roman.” Brett and Shannan knew that after this experience, they didn’t want to live in town anymore. “The thing is, when Brett and I were long distance that’s what we always dreamed about doing, we used to talk about it a lot, but when I came back to Australia and we got married and had the children we just got caught up in life and that dream didn’t happen and it just kind of got shelved,” Shannan says. “We always wanted to do it but we just couldn’t quite do it, and when Roman was really sick we weren’t expecting him to survive, and we’d talk about what we’d do if we all got out, so we had a lot of different dreams but the farm thing was what kept coming up.

When you think about that — all I can influence is right now — I think that gives you a freedom to live differently.

— SHANNAN JACKWITZ

,

“We wanted to do something a little more challenging and affect both the boys’ lives, so exposing them to fresh air; fruit and vegetables, chemical and hormone-free meats — it changed everything for us.” Shannan absolutely loves living in the Groomsville area. “It’s a really nice community out there — we have a few farms close by that we’re all friends with and we all have a similar outlook on life, just trying to be self-sufficient,” she says. “It’s a more peaceful life ... life is just more simple.” Self-sustainable farming has seen the Jackwitz family constantly learning, with plenty of hurdles and laughs. “It’s great!” Shannan laughs, a large smile lining her face. “The outlay is always there, but the boys learn about respecting the animals and where their food comes from. “It’s great to go to the shops and not have to buy milk, eggs, bread, meat — it’s amazing to not have to buy that stuff.” Shannan has found that living on — and from — the land has changed her and her family’s lives for the better in every way.

“Our family is really connected and happy — we feel a real affinity with the land, we know it’s a real privilege to have that,” Shannan says. “Our lives are simpler so that makes me worry about things less and we’re not caught up in consuming as much. “On the farm you feel a lot more whole.” Shannan began The Barefoot Farmer Instagram just over a year ago, purely for some creative expression about her life on the farm, and now she has international followers. “It’s connected us with people all over the world who are really likeminded,” Shannan smiles. “I’m amazed people find us interesting!” Shannan has found simplicity from her family’s farm. “Life can be simple if you allow it to be,” she says. “There’s a real beauty in living in a simple way — it’s that slow movement of being present and not getting caught up in everything else that life has to offer because that’s easy to do. “We’ve been lucky enough to have been shown what’s important to us, and that’s different for every person, but for us at this point in time it’s our family, our farm and the animals there.” Shannan encourages everyone to pursue a new move, whatever it may be. “Just do it — you don’t get another chance, so everyday that you’re not walking around with a lot of grief and trauma about life is an opportunity for you to give it a go and just do it,” Shannan says. “Worst case scenario if you fail, just start again — I don’t want to look back on life and say why didn’t I do that, travel there, live there — you just have to do it, and you cannot influence tomorrow, and you cannot change yesterday “When you think about that — all I can influence is right now — I think that gives you a freedom to live differently.” She’s right, I thought. We smiled.

NUTRITION

CHANGE YOUR VIEW ON HEALTHY LIVING ★ Moderation Movement: This site is centred around the philosophy of stop quitting the food you love, ditch the fad diets and learn how to let go of anxiety and guilt around eating and exercise.

BY ACCREDITED DIETITAN KARA MCCOLLOM

S

ocial media can be persuasive. What people see and hear online can heavily influence what they choose to eat, what exercise they do and even their self image. This influence is not always positive. Sometimes the things we see can lead to unrealistic ideals and restrictive behaviours in the desire to look a certain way. In contrast, positive social media can often inspire people to carry out sustainable behaviours and even change the way people view health. Finding the right inspiration is the most important thing. My suggestions for what to follow to inspire healthy self image and habits are:

★ What’s for Eats: Designed by dieitian Nina Mills, What’s for Eats is designed to escape the diet noise and find information and support to help people tune into intuitive eating and feel good eating. ★ Eat for Wellness: Provides ideas to nourish and restore the body and soul and gives a new perspective on creating a respectful relationship to take care of yourself. ★ Body Positive Australia: Focuses around the concept of treating everyone, in every body of all shapes, sizes, genders and abilities with love, care and the utmost respect, and treating yourself the same way! So this month make the effort to fill your feed with positive social media posts to create a better perspective on healthy habits. You’ll feel better for it!

★ Centre for Integrative Health: Directed by a team of psychologists, dietitians and exercise physiologists, this centre is dedicated to helping people overcome their struggles with eating, weight and body image to improve their physical and emotional health.

TRAVEL

THE TRAVEL QUESTIONS BY AINSLEY HARDIE AT ITALKTRAVEL HIGHFIELDS

I

think any business has heard the phrase, ‘so I was wondering,’ uttered as the door to their business is pushed open and at italktravel Highfields it is no different. Here is a list of frequently asked questions. Do we book flights from Wellcamp? We most certainly do — we can access airfares with Qantas Link, Rex and Air North to destinations across Australia and in some cases across the world. Can we layby our holiday? You sure can — we have two different methods of paying off your holiday in instalments to assist with budgeting. Do I need a visa? As Australians we are very lucky and do not need a visa for most countries, however there are a few places where we can assist with getting your visa organised. How do we get paid? Airlines, hotels, cruise and tour companies pay us a commission for helping them arrange your holiday. This commission is built into the prices that you get direct from them, and is not an additional charge to you. What happens if I need help when on holiday? Our clients have access to a 24/7 helpline that will get you in touch with one of our staff members should you need assistance. However, this still leaves that title question hanging — why

book with us? The best travel deals at the best prices: Don’t waste your time searching the internet, just talk to one of our local travel experts who already has access to the best deals. Your one-stop travel shop: italktravel Highfields will assist you with every aspect of your holiday from flights to accommodation, ground transport, activities, tours, insurance, documentation, visas and more. 24/7 customer service: No matter where you travel in the world, your italktravel Highfields travel concierge is available to offer you top service — we’re only a phone call or email away. Supporting your local community: italktravel Highfields is locally owned and operated, and we proudly support local sports clubs and community events. Reliable, safe and responsible: italktravel Highfields travel concierges take responsibility to ensure that your details are always safe and secure and that you’re always kept informed of travel alerts and schedule changes. italktravel Highfields is both ATAS accredited and your booking is safe and secure under our Book Safe program. Your local travel experts: An italktravel Highfields travel concierge is waiting to save you time, money and stress. OPINION

METAPHORS AND THE BODY BY AMY MANZ, REGISTERED KINESIOLOGIST

H

ello there! I’m Amy Manz — Highfields local, mum of three, wife and a registered kinesiologist. If you read our amazing local magazine regularly then you would have noticed me on the front cover of the last issue when we looked at the age of anxiety. I’m super excited to bring you this little column every couple of months where we can explore natural health and have fun. So I’ve decided to write about metaphors and the body — strange I know, but stick with me! When people visit me in clinic for a physical ailment and I start asking what’s going on emotionally they can think it’s strange. How can what’s happening physically have anything to do with our emotions? Yet as we delve deeper and we start to interpret what the body is telling us, it rings true.

The left side of our body is to do with female energy and what we internalise, whereas the right side is to do with male energy and what we externalise. Here’s a little list of some common ailments that can come up: ■ Upset tummy: Let’s look at it metaphorically – you could ask ‘what’s happening emotionally that I can’t stomach at the moment?’ — it could be an upset at work, school or home. ■ Stiff neck: Are you ‘sticking your neck out’ (literally and metaphorically), or are you being inflexible on an issue? ■ Heel pain can be associated with feeling like you are ‘on the back foot’ about something. ■ Shoulders can often congest and ache when we have the ‘weight of the world on our shoulders’ or feel like we are ‘shouldering a burden’. Remember to always check in with your naturopath or GP to be on the safe side and talk about what’s happening for you.

CHATS WITH A THREE-NAGER BY BINDY SCOTT, MODERNWIFELIFE31 BLOGGER

H

ello Highfields friends! I’m Bindy Scott, and this is my first column for Highfields’ Own. You may remember me from the February/March edition or you may read my blog, but if you don’t know me, hi! I’m a local mum, I live with my husband and our two children, my three-and-a-half year old daughter and five-and-a-half month old son in Meringandan. In my spare time I write ModernWifeLife31. Now, lets talk about three-year-olds. Aren’t they the funniest, most curious and honest little people! This age makes me so happy, but at the same time it makes me need to take a deep breath and count to ten multiple times a day. Everyone always talks about the ‘terrible twos’, but most people fail to mention the ‘three-nager’. While this age can be full-on with the sassiness, wanting things their own way and craving independence, I still think it’s so fascinating and wonderful. I especially love my daughters constant thirst for knowledge and witnessing her mind explore every topic imaginable.

We have such sweet, deep and often hilarious conversations, such as her thought process on what makes someone skinny... being the fact they have skin. Another day I caught her measuring the cat with a ruler, from which she promptly decided that our cat was six months old. One more hilarious conversation was where she was adamant she would grow up and marry her baby brother. She was a bit heartbroken to find out that they would both have to find other people to fall in love with and marry. I have had a number of friends with three-year-old girls have similar marriage conversations, so I think it must be the age! What’s the funniest thing your kids have said? Tell me on my social media listed below. Instagram: @modernwifelife31 Facebook: Modern Wife Life 31

HELPING WITH STUDY STRESS S

chool is not an easy task and presents many stressful situations for hard-working students and their parents. Study and exam stress can become a big problem for students, often resulting in a fear of failure that defeats them before they start. However there are plenty of ways parents and friends can support those facing study stress and make school life a bit easier. It’s important for children to know it’s not the end of the world if they don’t do well and to make sure parents are not putting unnecessary pressure on their children without realising. Parents can help with study stress by keeping calm and trying not to get angry when tensions are high. It also helps your child put exams in perspective. Remind them of previous successes and other times they’ve got through exams. Above all, remember exams are going to be a stressful time for students of any age.

Ten study tips 1. Pick a place and time Where are you going to study and when? 2. Study every day Allocate time to get your study done. 3. Plan your time Have a plan of what to do with that time. 4. Discover your learning style What works best for you? 5. Review and revise Before moving on, review what you’ve done. 6. Take breaks Get up and move, have a cuppa but don’t go near the PlayStation. 7. Ask for help If you need help, just ask a parent or a friend. 8. Stay motivated Don’t give up, stay positive. 9. App it up Is there an app that can help you study or stay motivated? 10. Look after yourself Eat regularly, get lots of sleep and stay focused.

NEW BEGINNINGS FOR MARY MACKILLOP

Mary MacKillop is continuing to grow and improve. PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED

T

he 2017 Mary MacKillop Open Day was a huge success. With many of the parents and new families visiting senior school, the resounding statement of the event seemed to be, “you have really grown over the last couple of years!”. Mary MacKillop has grown, with so much on offer and great opportunities for high school students as they journey through their secondary education. Student-led tours and student performances were the highlight of the day. The year seven, eight and nine students shone as they shared what they love about Mary MacKillop. Guests commented on the atmosphere and excellence of the learning spaces, the quality of student work on display, the friendly environment, the passion and care of the teachers and the positive community feel, which was outstanding in every way.

“The facilities are second-to-none, but what I noticed most was how fantastic the students and staff were,” a prospective parent stated. July 2017 will see the second stage expansion begin, completing the construction and expansion of specialised buildings. This will include rooms for industrial technology design, music and the arts, an undercover sports and assembly area, administration, textiles and food technology, a new science lab and a computer lab. Enrolments for 2018 for years seven, eight, nine and 10 are now open. Come and have a chat with the principal or contact Mary MacKillop on 4698 7777 or visit www.highfields.catholic.edu.au for more information.

EDUCATION

IMPORTANCE OF READING W

e’ve all been taught from a young age how important it is to read. But with so many children growing up with technology, it is more important than ever to encourage children to read books and develop a love for reading. Here are several reasons why it is important to read with your children, especially from ages two and up. Basic speech skills Throughout toddlerhood and preschool, your child is learning critical language and enunciation skills. By listening to you read One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, for example, your child is reinforcing the basic sounds that form language. Pretend reading — when a toddler pages through a book with squeals and jabbers of delight — is a very important pre-literacy activity. As a preschooler, your child will likely begin sounding out words on his own.

The basics of how to read a book Children aren’t born with the knowledge that text is read from left to right or that the words on a page are separate from the images. Essential pre-reading skills like these are among the major benefits of early reading.

The knowledge that reading is fun Early reading for toddlers helps them view books as an indulgence, not a chore. Kids who are exposed to reading are much more likely to choose books over video games, television and other forms of entertainment as they grow older. Books have the power to benefit toddlers and preschoolers in a myriad of ways. As a parent, reading to your child is one of the most important things you can do to prepare him with a foundation for academic excellence.

Academic excellence One of the primary benefits of reading to toddlers and preschoolers is a higher aptitude for learning in general. Numerous studies have shown that students who are exposed to reading before preschool are more likely to do well in all facets of formal education. After all, if a student struggles to put together words and sentences, how can they be expected to grasp the maths, science and social concepts they’ll be presented with when they begins primary school?

More logical thinking skills Another illustration of the importance of reading to children is their ability to grasp abstract concepts, apply logic in various scenarios, recognise cause and effect and utilise good judgment. As your toddler or preschooler begins to relate the scenarios in books to what’s happening in his own world, he’ll become more excited about the stories you share.

Better communication skills When you spend time reading to toddlers, they’ll be much more likely to express themselves and relate to others in a healthy way. By witnessing the interactions between the characters in the books you read, as well as the contact with you during story time, your child is gaining valuable communication skills.

The Highfields region is booming with development.

PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED

BOOMING POPULATION Highfields is leading the way for expansion in the region, rating the second fastest growth area in Queensland BY CLARE STANDFAST

F

amilies, professionals, retirees and demographics of every kind are making their way to Highfields — in a big way — so why is the area becoming such a hit? On March 30 the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed that Highfields is the second fastest growth area in Queensland, behind the Gold Coast and Tweed Heads regions. Development company Lauder managing director, director of The Avenues of Highfields and TSBE board member Mac Stirling believes there are a number of reasons Highfields is leading the way in population growth. “Highfields, unlike many other areas, has its own identity and people are proud to call Highfields home, but more than this they find that by living there they are surrounded by likeminded people,” Mac says. “The location of Highfields on the Toowoomba Range escarpment area with rich red soils lends itself to housing development and access to essential services such as shopping centres, schools and recreation opportunities. “Importantly, the 12-minute drive north from Toowoomba city to get home to Highfields, is a pleasant ‘switch-off’ for people who work in Toowoomba and who call Highfields home.” There are approved developments within the Highfields area across both the commercial and residential sectors including childcare centres, shopping centre expansions, Toowoomba 28

Regional Councils’ Highfields Sports Park redevelopment project and the expansion of Borneo Barracks at Cabarlah. While Highfields has seen a substantial 2.5 per cent increase of residents, representing a a total of 12,817 people coming to the area in the 2015 and 2016 years alone, families, professional couples and retirees are definitely ear-marking the area as a lifestyle alternative to suburban living.

Highfields is its own community and very self-sufficient — we are very excited about moving to the Avenues.

— MAXINE THORNTON, BUYER AT THE AVENUES OF HIGHFIELDS

,

Local couple Maxine and Tony Thornton have purchased part of the stage one development at The Avenues of Highfields, and are very happy with their decision. “Our original plan was to buy an investment property, and one day Tony said to me, ‘let’s look at a GJ’s display house’,” Maxine says. “We walked in and were greeted by a friendly lady who was

more than happy to help — we asked about land and there was land at Torrington which is close to Glenvale where we live currently or Highfields. “I was leaning towards Torrington but after looking at the land we decided on Highfields and after further discussion with Rosie [GJ staff] Highfields would be a better return on our money as this will be our last house as I have just turned 50 and Tony will be 50 later in the year.” Tony works for JJ Richards and Sons and has done for the past 16 years. Maxine has been the manager at Meals on Wheels in Toowoomba for 15 years. “Highfields is its own community and very self-sufficient — we are very excited about moving to the Avenues — it will be a great place to live,” Maxine says.

FEATURE

There is no doubt that Highfields has been and will continue to be the engine room for population growth in the Toowoomba region.

— MAC STIRLING, LAUDER MANAGING DIRECTOR

,

Similarly, Mac Stirling has seen the region develop over the years from when his family property development company, Lauder first purchased 38 acres of pasture land at Highfields in 1996. They later developed that to become Highfields Village Residential Estate and Highfields Village Shopping Centre. At that time, the population of Highfields was less than 6000 people. “The population is now close to 15,000 in Highfields and the surrounding area and is projected to be 20,000 by 2025,” Mac says. Once the residential and shopping centre projects were underway at the town centre, Lauder worked closely with the Crowns Nest Shire and education providers to encourage the development of education opportunities for the growing young population of Highfields. This saw existing schools expand and eventually the provision of a new high school with Highfields Secondary College located adjacent to the town centre. “In addition, opportunities for retirees have continued to develop with Brownsholme [retirement community] expanding and more recently new providers in the retired living sector entering the market. “New residential subdivisions such as The Avenues of Highfields are offering a range of lot sizes to not only meet public demand but to comply with the Toowoomba Regional Council Town Plan for an aspirational target of 12 to 14 dwelling units per hectare. Mac believes Highfields has a bright future in a variety of different areas. “There is no doubt that Highfields has been and will continue to be the engine room for population growth in the Toowoomba region,” Mac says. The Avenues of Highfields will welcome some 1650 residents upon completion of its 10 stages, representing over 180 full-time employee opportunities. The development also offers a $35 million economic injection. “In fact, it is our opinion that the Second Range Crossing will see the whole focus of Toowoomba move north towards Highfields,” Mac comments. With the Second Range Crossing being developed, Highfields will be very conveniently located for close access to Brisbane and the Wellcamp Airport.

CHILDREN’S COLLECTIVE

THE PERFECT PARENT MYTH BY LIZ WALSH

I

f there’s one thing that makes a perfect parent, it’s imperfection: so says one of the most recognisable global parenting experts, Jo Frost. Frost (pictured) became a no-nonsense phenomenon with the worldwide television series Supernanny. She told The Advertiser from her London home that the “smoke and mirrors” of social media only added to the pressures to be the perfect parent. “The reality is ... messier,” Jo says. “The perfect parent doesn’t exist; no one is perfect. “We all screw up, we make mistakes, we get a bit lazy. “I understand and celebrate that (sort of) parent but, at the same time, I don’t think it’s okay to celebrate not doing anything all the time.” She said the most common mistake modern-day parents made was using quick fixes to curb their child’s behaviour. “We live in the kind of world where we want immediate gratification, we want everything yesterday and that our techniques will work in five minutes. “But there are no shortcuts in parenting. “If you make a decision and it’s a quick fix, it turns around and bites you on the bum.”

Active learning keeps kids moving

C

hildren have a natural urge to climb, hang, swing, jump, run, roll and balance that needs to be nurtured in order to stimulate muscle growth and brain development. It’s therefore vital as parents to support this natural activity in a safe environment to ensure children develop to their full potential, and there’s no better way to do this than by joining gymnastics. Gymnastics is a challenging, multidisciplined and safe sport catering to children of all ages and abilities. It provides a complete foundation for all sport, preparing children in whole

body movement, control and co-ordination, as well as fine motor skills, conceptual, sensory and rhythmic development. Participating in a gymnastics program increases core strength, balance, spatial awareness, and the ability to land and injury prevention. It can also boost your child’s self-esteem, and in addition to the physical wellbeing benefits, studies show strong links between whole body movement, emotional stability and brain development, especially in the early years of life. Gymnastics teaches life skills such as setting goals and reaching them.

Programs at Allstar Gymnastics cater for gymnasts of all ages and abilities, and provide for an easy transition from one program to another. These programs are designed to foster the developing needs of the whole child while supporting their selfconfidence.

Allstar Gymnastics has been represented at regional, state, national and international levels, and with friendly, fully trained coaches on hand, it is a fun and positive way to include your child in an active lifestyle that benefits their continual developmental needs.

DREAMING OF A GREEN WINTER Natural colours warm up an otherwise cool trend of strong greens this winter BY JESSICA KRAMER

T

his year has seen a sharp shift in interior decorating trends already, and winter is only continuing this movement. Expect to see strong greens out with enthusiasm as the cold weather hits, as well as natural textiles. While solid green on its own may create quite a cold feeling to your winter abode, incorporating natural textiles can add some warmth. Rattan is very much in vogue, as well as cork and woven materials. Aside from this, green doesn’t necessarily have to be a cold colour. Teal is another on-trend shade of green and can be quite warm, especially when pared with warm metallics and natural colours.

INTERIOR

KEEPING IT GREEN W

inter can always be a difficult season to get through — the days are short and the weather can be bleak. It can be hard to keep a lot of plants alive, and a lot of the time, you don’t want to be outside watering plants and tending to a garden in the cold winter weather! But there is something you can do to overcome the dreariness — dress-up your home with some gorgeous interior greenery. A great choice is a fern, or a few ferns; they add a lovely soft texture to any area. Maintenance is straight forward — trim stray fronds, remove any brown bits — they are best placed in indirect light and need to be watered whenever the top of the soil is dry to touch. Succulents are great options — they are like mini sculptures with many different shapes and textures. They are easy to care for, they need direct light, well draining soil that can easily dry between watering. These are also great for children for these ease of care. You can find so many beautiful varieties, even at local farmers’ markets. Look into what suits your family and grab some for winter.

AT HOME IN HIGHFIELDS

Country living at its very best

Home loan features explained

Get the wrap-up on the 2017 federal budget

REAL ESTATE

TONY’S NOTES Hello and welcome again to the latest edition of Highfields’ Own. Recently there has been a lot of controversy surrounding the proposed changes to some of our roads around Highfields and in particular the proposed extension of Clarke Rd through to the New England Hwy. To me it seems that most of the new development and higher density housing is to be on the northern side of Rees Rd. It seems that the logical plan would be to widen and upgrade Rees Rd rather than continue Clarke Rd through to the highway. Surely this would also be much more economical as well. On the real estate side the local market is still the same as it has been for a while now with homes on a half to an acre still selling very well and the smaller blocks taking longer to sell. Overall there is still a shortage of properties on the market compared to historical levels and properties in central Highfields are still in strong demand. — Tony Franke, prinicipal of Ray White Toowoomba Range

HOME LOAN FEATURES EXPLAINED T

hese days when it comes to home loan options it can feel like you’re drowning in choices with different lenders, products and features. Choice Home Loans broker Scott Erickson shares his tips.

Define your goals

Understanding your financial goals is key to finding the most suitable mortgage product for you. For example, do you want to pay the loan off quickly while paying the least amount of interest? Would you prefer your repayments to be a predictable cost? Do you need the flexibility of a redraw facility (borrowing money you’ve paid into your loan)? It’s also important to look at the fees and charges: there may be an establishment fee and account service charges that could offset any savings in interest.

Decide between a fixed or variable rate

A fixed rate loan may look attractive. The rate is set for a certain period (usually two to five years), which makes repayments predictable. But the conditions may limit extra repayments. So if you pay a quarter or half per cent more interest for a variable rate loan, you may be able to pay more off the loan faster, reducing the interest you pay over time by making more frequent payments, or paying lump sums into the loan.

Consider offset plus credit card packages

Most lenders now offer packages consisting of a loan account, offset account and credit card with interest-free days. You use the credit card for your expenses, and at the end of the month pay the full credit card balance from the funds in the offset account. This means you make use of the interest-free days on your credit card account without paying interest.

You can now book your appointments online!

FEDERAL 2017 BY MORTGAGE CHOICE

budget:

T

As promised, negative gearing was largely kept off the agenda. But while there were no material changes to this investment policy, the treasurer made it clear that certain tax advantages given to these property investors would be restricted. Negatively geared landlords will no longer be able to claim tax deductions for travel expenses related to owning and renting an investment property. In addition, the rules around depreciation deductions for plant and equipment items have been tightened. As a result, investors will only be able to claim deductions on plant and equipment items (such as washing machines and ceiling fans) that they actually purchased. Meanwhile, investors looking to purchase affordable housing will be rewarded with various tax incentives.

he Federal Government has unveiled its 2017-18 national budget, with first time buyers and small business owners the big winners, and foreign workers, Australia’s major banks and middle to high income earners the biggest losers. Last year, the Federal Government’s national budget gave us the usual showbag of fringe-based changes that seemed to affect few people. This year however, the story was a little different. According to treasurer Scott Morrison, this year’s federal budget was honest. “This is an honest budget: it does not pretend to do things with money we do not have,” Mr Morrison said. “This is a budget and a plan that can be supported.” And while some members of the community will likely support the Government’s 2017-18 budget, others — namely higher income earners and foreign workers — may find it hard to do so. Below are some of the highlights from the 2017-18 federal

BUDGET WRAP-UP building more homes over the coming years. Specifically, the treasurer said $1 billion would be spent on the creation of a National Housing Infrastructure Facility which would hopefully address some of the choke-points that are impeding housing development in certain areas. Mr Morrison said the government is working to unlock unused defence land in Melbourne in order to erect more properties in the area. In addition, Mr Morrison said the government would seek to deliver tens of thousands of new homes in western Sydney as part of the Western Sydney city deal. The government also announced its plans to fund certain rail and air projects. Notably, the Federal Government said it would deliver $1.2 billion to Western Australia in order to fund the Metronet project and expand the Perth rail system. But while the new funding was considered a win for Western Australia, the state’s treasurer, Ben Wyatt, said Western Australia weren’t going to be celebrating any time soon.
