A welcome from the Mayor

The Gympie region has become known for its diversity in all things - landscape, culture, and community. Our pocket of Australia has no shortage of places to see, food to try and things to do for all ages. Our unique position means we’re perfectly situated for visitors to take in the best of coast, country and hinterland all year round. Our footprint to the east encompasses the Cooloola Coast, Tin Can Bay, and Rainbow Beach areas - perfect spots to surf, camp, 4WD, snorkel and even swim with dolphins in their natural environment. Discover the World Heritage Listed Fraser Island, only a short barge ride away from our shore, or take in Rainbow Beach’s famous rainbow sands from the Carlo Sand Blow. To the south-west, the Mary Valley and hinterland area remain one of Gympie’s best kept secrets. Here you’ll find access to waterways with newly-installed canoe and kayak launch points, local cheese producers, bed and breakfasts and country pubs. Or take a ride with the family on the newly refurbished Mary Valley Rattler heritage steam train from Gympie’s historic railway station and café. In the Gympie Town Centre, visitors can take a walk through Gympie’s rich living history on the Gympie Town Centre Heritage Trail. The Heritage Trail celebrates Gympie’s architecture, much of which has been well preserved and maintained across the last century. For nature enthusiasts, the River to Rail Trail is an easy 1km walk from the Town Centre, and showcases the best of the Mary River from its banks. For those looking for a rural experience, try the Kilkivan to Kingaroy Rail Trail which traverses through the western region’s scenic farmland and bush landscapes. Council’s aim is to ensure the Gympie region remains an affordable holiday choice and we’re proud of what we can offer those staying in the area. Visitors can enjoy many tourism activities, such as the rail, heritage and river trails, for free. Only two hours’ drive north of Brisbane via the Bruce Highway, and an hour either side of the Fraser and Sunshine Coasts, Gympie is an accessible and affordable choice for a break away. We’re very lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world, and we hope you enjoy your stay.

TRAILS TRACKS AND TRAILS

THE Gympie region provides a unique and diverse environment, providing significant opportunities for outdoor recreation for both local residents and visitors. While the area already provides a great variety of recreation tracks and trails within public lands, the opportunity exists to enhance this to provide additional recreation, tourism and economic benefits. The Gympie region provides regionally significant trails including (part of) the Cooloola Great Walk and Bicentennial National Trail, as well as more localised networks such as the Victory Heights Trail Network. RIVER TO RAIL TRAIL Stage 1 of the River to Rail Trail can be accessed from the Sands (Kidgell St – northbound traffic only), River Tce (Gympie Weir), Albert Park and Rose St (adjacent to the netball courts). It is located within 1km from the Gympie Town Centre, and caters for all fitness levels. The 1.8km gravel link, which skirts along the banks of the Mary River between Kidd Bridge and the Sands recreational area, is ideal for walking, running and admiring the native habitat and wildlife exclusive to the area.

Stage 2 of the River to Rail Trail is due for completion mid 2019. It will extend through the Victoria Bridge Conservation Area and One Mile Sports Complex, past the ARC and up to the historic Rattler Rail Station on Tozer St. VICTORY HEIGHTS TRAIL A LOCAL trail network for passive recreation (walking, mountain biking, horse riding) has been developed by local not-for-profit community group Cooloola Trail Care Alliance. The facility is within 3km of Gympie’s town centre. The trails weave through 60ha of mature eucalypt forest providing unique and accessible nature-based recreation options for locals and visitors. Each Saturday morning the CTCA host a 5km parkrun on the trails. Registration is required for the first run but not for subsequent events. Find more information c at www.parkrun.com.au/victoryheightstrail. COOLOOLA GREAT WALK The Cooloola Recreation Area lies between the coastal towns of Tewantin, and Rainbow Beach. Up to 102km long, this extensive walking track system winds through rainforest, tall eucalypt forest, dry coastal woodland and heath plains.

KILKIVAN-KINGAROY RAIL TRAIL The Kingaroy to Kilkivan Rail Trail is a joint project between Gympie Regional Council and South Burnett Regional Council, funded by the State Government. The distance between Kilkivan and Kingaroy is 88km in total along the former railway corridor alignment and most suitable for mountain bikers, bushwalkers and horse riders looking for a more adventurous and true trail experience.

WILDLIFE RESCUE FOR SICK AND INJURED WILDLIFE

CALL the Gympie ANARRA (Australian Native Animal Rescue Rehabilitation Association) wildlife rescue hotline on 5484 9111. RSPCA’s 24-hour number 1300 animal (1300 264 645) also links callers to local services anywhere in Queensland. Injured wildlife can also be taken to a veterinary clinic where they will be assessed and allocated to licensed wildlife carers or sent to a wildlife hospital. Vet clinics and rescue groups do not charge to accept wildlife. If you find a dead or injured kangaroo, wallaby, possum or koala check for a pouch (if safe to do so) and do not remove furless joeys from the teat.

KOALAS

FOR koala rescue and conservation use the wildlife rescue phone numbers as above. (Any koala hit by a vehicle or bitten by a dog must receive urgent treatment. It is also important to report all dead koalas). The koala is classified as vulnerable in Queensland under the Nature Conservation Act 1992. Contact Koala

Action Gympie Region (KAGR) on Facebook regarding local koala conservation.

WILD DOG AND OTHER PEST ANIMAL SPECIES

ALL wild doges in Queensland are declared Class 2 pest animals under the Land Protection (Pest and Stock Route Management) Act 2002. Please report your feral animal issue to the Gympie Regional Council lands protection team on 1300 307 800. Various

RECYCLING CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE

AT this stage there are only two places in the Gympie region where you can recycle containers with a deposit. Reverse vending machines, donation sites and mobile and pop-up refund points are not available but this situation may change as the scheme gains momentum in the region. ELIGIBLE BEVERAGE CONTAINERS Most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard beverage containers between 150ml and three litres are eligible for a refund when returned to a container refund point. To be eligible the beverage container must: ■ Have contained a beverage product that is not excluded from the scheme. For example, cordials and plain milk are not included in the scheme so containers that have held these products are not eligible for a refund. ■ Display the refund mark. This is so the container refund point operator can see if the container is part of the scheme. Most containers will already have a refund mark for SA and NT and these containers are eligible under Containers for Change. Beverage manufacturers have until December 1 to display the new refund

deposit into the ID holder’s account. Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm.

mark on their containers. ■ Be an approved container. Some containers are made out of materials that cannot be recycled. These containers may not be approved as an eligible container as the scheme requires that when a refund is paid on a container that container must be recycled. Other refund payment options are available (cash, voucher, donation) and do not require a scheme account. Please check with your local container refund point operator for available payment options. RE.TURN-IT, GLANMIRE Re.Turn-it is an over-the-counter depot where payment is made via cash or EFT with a scheme ID. It is located at Shed 4, 4 Smith St, Glanmire. Opening hours are 8am-4pm Monday to Friday, 9am-2pm Saturday and 10am-2pm Sunday. POST OFFICE, KILKIVAN The Post Office at 27 Bligh St, Kilkivan, is a drop-off point where customers are encouraged to drop off their recyclables in re-usable bags, tagged with their scheme ID. MARY STREET EVENTS FOUR times a year Mary Street puts on a street festival and all the locals come out to play. These are designed to occur around Easter and just before Christmas, with a Winter Trees on Mary event happening in July. Last year an additional date was added to the calendar to coincide with the Gympie Music Muster and it is anticipated this will occur again this year. The events feature food vendors, musicians and entertainers, horse and cart rides, face painting and lots of activities for the whole family. The beautiful trees that line Mary St are decorated in the festivals theme and sparkle with thousands of fairy lights, adding to the atmosphere. Run by the Gympie Regional Council and in conjunction with The Mary St Traders and other community groups, the events attract upwards of 2000 people to each event. This year the events are scheduled

as follows*:

■ Easter on Mary - Wednesday April 17 ■ Winter Trees on Mary - Wednesday July 17 ■ Pre-Muster Party - Wednesday

August 21 ■ Mary Christmas 1 & 2 - Wednesday December 11 & 18 *(dates correct at time of printing)

THE MARY VALLEY RATTLER THE future is looking bright for one of Queensland’s most iconic and much-loved tourism attractions, with the steam and diesel engines of the Mary Valley Rattler again chugging their way through some of South East Queensland’s most picturesque countryside. The heritage railway experience reopened in early October 2018, after an almost seven-year hiatus to allow for significant upgrades to century-old trackwork and infrastructure. Morning and afternoon services on the Mary Valley Rattler run three days per week on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays for a return journey from the historic Gympie or Amamoor stations, with additional rail experiences running regularly. Reputed to be the largest timber railway building owned by Queensland Rail during the 20th century, the historic Gympie station is the headquarters of the Mary Valley Rattler and arguably one of the most stylish and elaborate in the context of timber railway architecture. Along with a gift shop and a historical display, the station is home to Platform No.1 Cafe offering dine in or takeaway options including wine and cheese platters to enjoy aboard one of the Rattler’s lovingly restored

heritage trains as it winds through 46km of breathtaking scenery. Dotted with quaint country villages and known for its high-quality produce, the Mary Valley is a patchwork of grazing properties, dairies, small produce farms, rainforests and endless rolling hills. Restroom facilities and refreshments are available at all stops. It’s a magical trip into living history and one visitors will want to take again and again. For more information, ticket purchases and departure times visit

While there is wheelchair access to the Gympie Station, there is currently no access to the train carriages at the time of printing. NATIONAL DISABILITY INSURANCE SCHEME WHAT IS THE NDIS?

THE National Disability Insurance Scheme is the new method of providing disability support, with the needs of the individual at the forefront. The scheme was rolled out in the Gympie region on January 1 and aims to give power back to the recipients, allowing them to “tailor-make” support with a program unique to each individual. The NDIS provides all Australians under the age of 65, who have a permanent and significant disability, with the reasonable and necessary supports they need to enjoy an ordinary life. The program now supports about 460,000 people across the nation. The NDIS replaces the previous disability support scheme and aims to help participants find solutions for their whole life, not just the present and immediate future.

HOW TO ACCESS THE SCHEME

applicants may be asked to submit further information. If this is the case, applicants will be sent a letter and a form to have completed by a healthcare professional. Applicants will be notified within 21 days if they have been approved or denied entry into the scheme and if there is a delay in the approval process, applicants

6926850aa

TO access the scheme, participants will need to lodge an access request either over the phone or through a paper form with an NDIA, or National Disability Insurance Agency. These agencies are employed to link the

dots between NDIS service providers and those seeking assistance. People looking to receive help will be asked a series of questions including: ■ Confirmation of identity ■ Questions in relation to providing consent to enter the scheme ■ Questions to determine eligibility Following the initial access process,

will be notified. An appeal can be lodged to review a failed request within three months of the decision being made.

WHAT SUPPORT IS COVERED?

EVERY case is evaluated on an individual basis and support is provided accordingly. In a general sense, the NDIS provides

personalised: ■ Information and referral ■ Support to access community services and activities ■ Individualised plans and supports ■ Early intervention ■ Funded supports that may be one-off or a funded support package. Examples include assistive technology, Auslan and housing.

Be featured in the GO TO book for the Gympie Residents!

Assistive technology, as defined by the World Health Organization, is “any device or system that allows individuals to perform tasks they would otherwise be unable to do or increases the ease and safety with which these tasks can be performed”. Some examples of assistive technology that an NDIS participant may be eligible to receive funding for include: ■ Mobility cane ■ Non-slip bathmat ■ Non-electronic magnifiers ■ Talking watch ■ Long-handled or adapted grip equipment ■ Shower stool/chair ■ Bath seat ■ Over-toilet frame ■ Video magnifier ■ Bed rails ■ Wheelchair ■ Hoist ■ Hearing aids If you think you may be eligible, phone the NDIS hotline on 1800 800 110 between 8am–11pm, Monday to Friday.

SCHOLASTIC OPPORTUNITIES EDUCATION is a big part of a person’s life and there are many fine institutions in and around Gympie. Gympie has a range of pre-school and child care facilities and a number of different care options are available. The region also boasts excellent primary and secondary schools in both the public and private sector. Students from both public and private schools have gone on to represent the region in scholastic and sporting endeavours. When choosing a school for your child it is important to remember the catchment system for public schools is in place, but there are exceptions to these rules. Queensland children are expected to attend the primary or secondary school which is closest to their home by the most direct path. Some of these catchment areas can overlap, so in those cases choices are available to students. Also, if the school you are interested in sending your child to has not reached its enrolment capacity, they may accept a certain number of out-of-area students on a first-come basis.

When it comes to tertiary education Gympie has a campus of the University of the Sunshine Coast, plus there are certificate courses available through TAFE.

There are also a number of specialist training organisations in the region, teaching all sorts of skills from advanced driving to first aid

WESTERN SUBURBS THE area comprising Widgee, Lower Wonga, Woolooga, Kilkivan and Goomeri has some of the most diverse wilderness in the region. There’s mountainous virgin bushland in the Brooyar State Forestry at Glastonbury, wide brown grazing pastures near Woolooga and Kilkivan, and an almost rainforest type environment around Widgee. The major centres of Kilkivan, Goomeri and Widgee are the quintessential Queensland outback towns where the main social activities revolve around the local pub and convenience stores. Goomeri has its annual agricultural show plus it plays host to the perennial favourite Pumpkin Festival each May. Kilkivan has thousands of riders migrate to the area during the Great Kilkivan Horse Ride. Widgee hosts annual events including the Bush Balladeers, Widgee Campdraft and Widgee Fun Day at its showgrounds, which have campsites available. There is good infrastructure surrounding the townships and the communities in those regional centres are close-knit and supportive. The area is a great drawcard for people who are after affordable acreage and want to own horses or livestock. Goomeri also adjoins the South Burnett region, one of Queensland’s fastest growing wine producing areas, affording opportunities in food tourism and winery tours.
