MORE and more visitors are discovering what the Mackay and Whitsunday regions have to offer, with increasing numbers of domestic and international tourists visiting the region.

While Mackay is often bypassed in favour of the white beaches and pristine reefs of the Whitsundays, the unique experiences the southern region has to offer are bringing in a record number of international tourists.

From the kangaroos and wallabies on the beach to the platypus in the high waters of the Pioneer River, there is so much to see and do in between.

While in the Whitsundays, there is the natural beauty of the Great Barrier Reef, on the doorstep of a thriving community where there is always something to do until late.

These are some of the attractions you get all year round, but the region also hosts some of the most interesting events and festivals in North Queensland and that’s what this Discover book is all about.

There is so much to see and do in this region, but we also know how to celebrate where we live and are always happy for visitors to come along and share in the excitement.

You might be here to get up close to the Great Barrier Reef, but how much better would the experience be

if you also caught up with a few of the locals at the Airlie Beach Music Festival, or the Mackay Beach Horse Races?

It takes an already great holiday experience, and makes it better.

People are already discovering the natural beauty of the Mackay region.

Last year, international tourist numbers increased in Mackay to 50,000, with 38,000 deciding on Mackay for a holiday.

Most of these visitors were from Europe and 9000 of these were from Germany.

It’s no coincidence that Mackay is so enticing for people looking for a unique experience off the beaten tourist path.

In Whitsunday, there were about 300,000 overnight domestic visitors to the Whitsunday and 241,000 overnight international visitors.

International visitors made up about one third of all tourists to the gateway to some of the most pristine reefs in the entire Great Barrier Reef.

With so many people coming and going through this region, is it any wonder that the events in this region are so diverse?

Mackay and the Whitsunday attract such a diverse range of people.

When: April 13, 4.30pm and April 14, 3pm Where: Harrup Park Country Club What: Since the first Eat Street Mackay at Harrup Park that attracted more that 10,000 people, the events have become more refined. There are dozens of food options, with tastes from around the world. Why not pop down to Harrup Park cricket oval and grab a delicacy from Turkey and India, or for something completely different, try the meats in a popular South African style.

When: April 22 Where: Denman Cellars Beer Cafe, Airlie Beach What: The infamous Brewers’ Lunch with Modus Operandi, which includes five beer tastings, four paired food bites and live music from Reggae Master Mr Weke.

TASTE OF AIRLIE PROGRESSIVE LUNCH

When: May 12 Where: Airlie Beach What: A carefully devised three-course menu food tour spread across three restaurants at Airlie Beach. The first stop is Hemingway’s at Abell Point Marina for entree, the main is at La Marina and dessert will be at Northerlies Beach Bar and Grill.

G&S ENGINEERING WINE AND FOOD DAY

When: July 21 Where: Queens Park, East Mackay What: The signature event of the festival will see Queens Park become an entertainment hub that attracts almost a quarter of the region’s population. Two stages entertain the

crowd with non-stop entertainment from 10.30am. Running alongside the main stage will be an amazing selection of local dance groups who will keep the entertainment going in between sets. There is also the best food and boutique wine vendors from across the region.

LUNCH & GNOCCHI MASTERCLASS

When: June 2, 10am–4pm Where: Church Cafe, Pinnacle What: Let Guiseppe take you on journey around Tuscany. Learn the fundamentals of making gnocchi with a Masterclass followed by an Italian lunch. To top off the Italian experience we will taste our way through the flavours at Gelatissimo, Mackay. Fresh, artisanal, delicious gelato.

FLAVOURS OF CUBA MASTERCLASS

When: April 28 Where: Goanna Brewing What: Visit Mackay’s own brewery – Goanna Brewing and learn the

process of producing premium beer, cider and ginger beer without preservative or pasteurisation. Finish the tour with a taste of the Cuban-inspired cider and ginger beer.

Next stop is with Trudie and the team at The Family Table – Mackay Gather, where Trudie will celebrate our local produce and ways of turning this into Cuban flavours.

When: September 9 Where: Eungella What: Discover Eungella with a day trip to the tourist hot spot west of Mackay. The first stop is Eungeall Community Hall to learn about the history of the township over morning tea before the tour heads to Cloudbreak Low Line Farm for a farm tour and Ploughman’s lunch.

THE MARKETS GREATER WHITSUNDAY FARMERS’ MARKET

When: Every Wednesday, 7–11am.

Where: Bluewater Quay.

Details: The Greater Whitsunday Farmers’ Market showcases local farmers and their produce. The market allows people to support farmers by buying seasonal local produce directly from them.

PAXTON’S NIGHT MARKETS

When: Every second Friday of the month, 5–8pm.

Dates: April 13, May 11, June 8, July 13, August 10, September 14, October 12, November 9, December 14.

Where: 10 River St. Details: Paxton’s Night Markets showcase local artists, designer and handmade goods. There is a vintage section that includes pre-loved wares. Delicious food is on sale at the Market Cafe and from stallholders.

MACKAY SHOWGROUND MARKETS

When: Every Saturday, 6.30am.

Where: Mackay Showgrounds, Milton St. Details: Mackay Showground Markets is Mackay’s longest-running farmers’ market. The markets sells local produce from markets in the region. Seafood, plants and natural products are available for purchase.

There is also a flea market.

FRIDAY RIVER STREET TWILIGHT MARKET

When: Held the second Friday of each month, 4–8pm.

Dates: March 9, April 13, May 11, June 8, July 13, August 10, September 14, October 12, November 9, December 14.

Where: Bluewater Quay.

Details: Hosted by the Greater Whitsunday Food Network, these community markets allow people to meet local producers, value-adders, creators and bakers. People are encouraged to walk through Paxton’s Night Market and the River Street Twilight Market before heading to the Mackay City Centre to explore local cafes, bars and restaurants.

EUNGELLA MONTHLY INDOOR MARKETS

When: Held on the first Sunday of each month, 9am–noon.

Dates: January 7, February 4, March 4, April 1, May 6, June 3, July 1, August 5, September 2, October 7, November 4, December 2.

Where: Eungella Memorial Hall, North St, Eungella.

Details: A variety of stalls sell home-grown, home-made, hand-sewn and hand-crafted items.

GARGETT MARKET

When: Second Saturday of every month, 9am–1pm.

Where: Pioneer Valley Sporting Association, Eungella Rd, Gargett.

Details: This is a very popular market located in the Pioneer Valley, with about 60 stallholders. The market has a barbecue and bar available.

MARIAN MARKETS

When: Held on the third Sunday of every month (except for June and December), 8am–noon.

Dates: March 18, April 15, May 20, June 3, July 15, August 19, September 16, October 21, November 18, December 9.

Where: Holy Rosary Church grounds, Anzac Ave. Details: Held in Marian, this is a great local market with a variety of stalls offering produce and much more.

Details: The Weekly Seaforth Market has from five to 15 stallholders that sell local produce, home-made goods and other items. The markets may only be small but once a month they become a mega markets.

CELEBRATING DIFFERENT CULTURES: MULTICULTURAL EVENTS ITALIAN STREET PARTY

When: April 14, Where: Wood and Victoria streets What: The Mackay and District Italian Association is hosting the second annual street party.

Performer Tom Burlinson and his seven-piece band will performing their Now We’re Swinging Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin-style show. There is also the favourites from last year, including Dominico Taborelli and his band, authentic Italian folk dances and much more.

There is also Sorbellos’s pasta eating competition and Italian cooking demonstrations. Italian food is the best food and they will have a range of stalls along with working with all restaurants and bars in the area.

WHITSUNDAY REEF FESTIVAL

When: August 2-5 Where: Main Street, Airlie Beach Join in the celebrations which honour the reef and life in the

glorious Whitsundays with the region’s much-loved festival. There will be fireworks on the Foreshore on Friday, August 3, as well as live music, carnival rides, food stalls and night markets. Airlie’s Main Street is closed on the Saturday to host Revvin’ the Reef vintage car show,

the Rotary Street Parade and the Whitsunday Magic Mile Run. The Beach Music stage will be pumping the region’s top live music and entertainment on the foreshore throughout the weekend.

A FISHING WONDERLAND: WHERE TO LAND THE BIG ONE 13TH WORLD SOOTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Where: Eungella Dam. HOSTED by Mackay Area Fish Stocking Association Inc. The 13th World Sooty Championship, sponsored by INDT, is a weekend of camping and fishing scheduled over the May Day weekend at Eungella Dam. The competition specifically targets the native sooty grunter. With more than $10,000 in prizes and giveaways, this tournament is run over three sessions on the Saturday and Sunday and is capped at 100 adult anglers.

As a non-profit community organisation, this popular tournament is MAFSA’s major annual fundraiser.

SOME 4000 competitors and officials and thousands of spectators will converge on Mackay in May for the 2018 North Queensland Games.

The biennial event is the largest regularly run, multi-sport event in regional Australia and will be held in Mackay from May 5–7.

With more than 30 sports, from tenpin bowling to tennis, shooting to soccer and baton-twirling to beach volleyball, Mayor Greg Williamson said the region would have the chance to shine in and out of the sporting arena.

“Not only can we show off our sporting infrastructure and local talent but also our beautiful region,” he said.

CELEBRATING 10 years in 2018, the BMA Mackay Marina Run is one of regional Queensland’s most celebrated major running events.

PIONEER VALLEY AGRICULTURE SHOW

THE best one-day show in Australia.

Last year it attracted more than 16,000 people and its rural setting makes it the perfect event to celebrate a traditional agricultural show. It has everything you would expect from a traditional show but it’s not as old. The show began in 1962 and has grown considerably in the years since. This year the crowdfavourite Comedy Pig Races return and, of course, the wood-chop competition is not to be missed.

Venue: Mackay Showgrounds, cnr Milton and Gordon Sts. THE Mackay Show is not like most shows you will find in regional Queensland. It has a unique flavour that you will only find in a city that strives and celebrates its uniqueness.

For example, two of the biggest

events coinciding with the show are the fashion and arts exhibitions.

Arts on Show is one of the biggest annual exhibitions and competitions you will find in regional Queensland.

Art on Show is celebrating its 12th year and this year it welcomes New England Regional Art Museum director Robert Heather as its judge.

Every year Arts on Show brings in a well-known judge, which has helped attract entries from across Australia.

Mackay has a massive sideshow prescient that always has something new to draw the crowds. In the pavilions there are the stalls where you can find home-made confectionery and gourmet foods you won’t find anywhere else.

In the main ring there is live entertainment running all day, every day, with show jumping, stud cattle parade and the traditional favourite wood-chop competition.

WHITSUNDAY SHOW

PROSPERINE’S largest annual event also ends the show season for the Whitsundays and Mackay regions. The Whitsunday Show is an important community event and even after

WHAT TO DO WITH A FEW DAYS IN ONE OF THE WORLD’S BEST ISLAND ESCAPES DAY 1

If you’re there on the weekend, visiting the Whitsunday Markets is a must, with stalls of fresh fruit and vegetables the region is renowned for. It is open every Saturday from 7am–1.30pm.

The Airlie Beach Lagoon is a great place to hang out and watch the world go by. The lagoon, surrounded by parkland, features a sandy beach and a large swimming pool and provides a safe stinger-free

environment.

If you are feeling hungry after lounging by the pool, there are plenty of bars and restaurants to eat at for breakfast, lunch and dinner along Main St, just metres from the lagoon.

For a change of scenery, hop in your car and travel to Cedar Creek Falls, which is only 30 minutes from Airlie Beach. Perfect after some rain, this swimming hole offers refreshing and clear water. It’s the perfect place to

get those postcard photographs of your trip.

Alternatively, if you don’t have a car, take a ferry to Hamilton Island. The views are breathtaking and you can walk over the island or hire a cart.

Hamilton Island is a beautiful place to stay and if you want to be based in one place it’s a much more convenient choice for excursions than anywhere else.

It’s closer to the reef, Whitehaven and other beaches and has that tropical island vibe. Sunsets on the island are a highlight and a favourite spot to see it is One Tree Hill.

The view is incredible and the bar at the top does a mean cocktail.

DAY 2

While in the region it is a must to venture out onto one of the more secluded islands in the Whitsundays.

There are many day trips and activities available, including fishing tourism beach tours and you can even get a bird’s-eye view from a helicopter.

The Whitsundays is one of the best yachting destinations in the world, so head down to the marina and see what’s available. Who knows, a local might be looking for a deckhand for a day and that’s an experience like no other.

CATCH A FISH IN THE WHITSUNDAYS

Not only are the 74 islands and coastline of the Whitsunday surrounded by beautiful azure seas, they are teeming with a huge variety of pelagic and reef fish.

Blue and black marlin, bass, bream, sailfish, six species of mackerel,

seven species of coral trout, wahoo, dolphin fish, 11 species of trevally, four species of emperor, queenfish, barramundi... the list goes on.

Nearly all of the Whitsunday islands are accessible by boat. Some are National Parks and have affordable beach campsites (some with toilets, tables and other facilities) which puts you right in the action for spectacular tropical sports fishing without returning to the mainland.

Shore-based fishing is available from the many marinas and rock walls located around the town, including a fishing pontoon at Shute Harbour.

PIONEER VALLEY HAS SO MUCH TO OFFER DAY 1

Depart Mackay and head down the Peak Downs Highway where you will see the turn-off to Eungella and the Pioneer Valley. The drive will lead you through a tunnel of cane fields and spectacular views.

Mackay Eungella Road will take you through a number of small towns, on your way through the valley, including Pleystowe, Marian and Mirani.

If you are feeling peckish, you better wait until you arrive in Pinnacle, which is just under an hour’s drive.

There you can find the Pinnacle Hotel and the Church Cafe. The Pinnacle Hotel is known for its pies and made headlines for having a crumbed steak the size of an infant.

Meanwhile, the Church Cafe has brought a small slice of Italy to the region. The menu features traditional Italian cuisine including pastas, lasagne and a range of desserts all made fresh.

From Pinnacle it’s only about a 17-minute drive to Finch Hatton Gorge, which is a must-see attraction in the area. It features a number of waterfalls, including the Wheel of Fire cascades, which has a large rock pool at its base, perfect for swimming.

While you’re down at the gorge you might as well book your accommodation for the night at the Platypus Bush Camp.

The site, built primarily by owner of 27 years Warren ‘Wazza’ Swadling, offers site camping and glamping in wooden cabins.

Wazza could probably tell you a story or two about the Honey Moon Cabin, which overlooks the clear river.

From Finch Hatton it’s about a 20-minute drive to Eungella, where on the way you will journey up the steep range.

For breakfast head to the Eungella Chalet which has been a landmark in the local area for decades. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and offers spectacular views.

Once you’ve taken in the view overlooking the entire Pioneer Valley, you can drive to Broken River – here you can keep an eye out for platypus, from one of the three viewing platforms.

According to the Broken River Visitor Information Centre the platypus is spotted at various times throughout the day, but most commonly at early morning or late afternoon.

According to Eungella.com.au, the township has 22km of bush walking tracks within sub-tropical rainforest including sections of the Mackay Highlands Great Walks – so make sure you bring your hiking shoes.

CYCLING IN MACKAY

The Pioneer Valley is one of the best cycling spots in the region. Not only do you get a workout with an undulating landscape, you can also take it easy and enjoy more of the scenery.

One of the best rides is along Habana Rd from Golf Links Rd. Some of the other great rides in the area are at: ■ Rowallan Park The mountain bike park is home to the Mackay and District Mountain Bike Club and has more than 10km of challenging trails through sub-tropical rainforest and open paddocks.

■ Bluewater Trail One of the best ways to see what Mackay has to offer and so easy that the whole family can enjoy it.
