love in arms A story that begins in England and continues in Highfields BY LISA MACHIN

The Women’s Royal Naval Service, affectionately known as Wrens, took great pride in their uniforms. The picture of vintage glamour; stocking with seams running up the back, tailored jackets and uniform skirts, they were set apart from the other military divisions in their femininity. 27-year-old Jan was a petty officer in the Wrens, working as personal assistant to the commanding officer of the Royal Marines Base in Kent, England. One day in 1977 Mark Evans walked through the door, and that was that. “I remember him coming in being terribly polite, saluting,” Jan says. “He must have made some impression. “Yes, I don’t remember anyone before him or anyone after him so you must have made some impression,” she says, turning to her husband. “I was just a thoroughly nice chap,” Mark retorts. At 27, Jan was six years his senior. “I remember thinking ‘he’s far too young’,” she says. “Whenever he’d see me around the base he’d salute me, and he didn’t have to.” Seeing them now, relaxing on the veranda of their Highfields home, it’s clear they have lost none of that original connection. The pair began dating in April of the year they met, were engaged that August and married the following August. It was a time of great excitement as they both continued their military careers. Cutting a fine figure in uniform, Jan was the most photographed female officer for two years running, gracing the pages of Murdoch’s Sun newspaper, as well as promotional

military material. The pair moved to Australia in 1994, settling in Toowoomba and sending both their son Phil and daughter Jo to school here. Jan will forever remember the day she told her husband the official news she was pregnant with Phil, their first child. Mark, a serving helicopter pilot, was flying out to the Falklands that morning and Jan rang him five minutes before take-off to tell him the news. “It was definitely on my mind,” Mark says. “Another reason to come home, another thing to worry about.” As they fix me a cup of earl grey tea in their lovely home I am struck by the ease these two have around each other. Mark’s larrikin sense of humour is weathered good humouredly by Jan, and there is an underlying mutual respect there which is harder to build than one may think. It’s a marriage spanning 38 years and counting… so what is

their secret? “Being tolerant of each other, and complementing one another,” says Jan. “You get to a point where you have a shared history. “The longer you are together the more you have invested in it; your children, your life together.” “Occasional separation is good too,” Mark says. “When you are both in a similar field, as we were, you have that shared mental model.” And what of that question more of us struggle with than we’d like to admit in our relationships? How do we handle those differences between ourselves and our partners? Jan loves to read, Mark is not fussed. The answer? To create a reading room (no television!) in the back of the

house. Jan believe it’s about managing, not eradicating the differences. “You don’t want to be clones of each other.” The role of marriage in today’s world is certainly more questionable than it once was. While the Evans don’t think it’s the be-all and end-all of a relationship, they believe it still has value to some. “It’s a statement, but it’s a personal choice,” Mark says. “If it’s important to you and it gives you a sense of security then go for it. “If not, it doesn’t matter.” A healthy relationship is something they’ve tried to pass on to their children. “You don’t sit down and lecture them, you just hope they learn something from the example,” says Jan. “That’s all you can do — try to set an example and let them have a very stable childhood, so hopefully they realise that family life is important.”

Mark and Jan Evans with children Phil and Jo, add some glitz for a Hollywood house-warming party at their Highfields home. Phil flew back from overseas to surprise his mum for Mother’s Day.

just one day BY LETITIA ROBARTS

Dear brides, When you’re getting married it’s so easy to get caught up in planning the perfect wedding and sometimes that can create unnecessary stress and not to mention acting like bridezilla! From comparing your wedding to a family member or a friends special day and being determined to make it better than theirs isn’t a good place to start planning from Dispose of the bridal magazines comparing yourself to other brides in the magazine — it’s not unhealthy and unrealistic, but it can make you feel like you’re not going to be good enough. All of this can lead you to thinking that your day isn’t going to be special unless you’re a certain size or you have that $10,000 dress and the matching centrepieces and the right champagne for toasting. Well here’s the voice of reason my dear: it’s all just fluff, okay? If you can afford that $10,000 dress, you buy it honey, if you can get the centrepieces to match, by all means do it and if you can find a delicious toasting champagne, I salute you! And if getting married inspires you to get back on the fitness wagon or crank it up a notch that too is fantastic, but remember your partner loves you for who you are, not only for how you look or what you choose to wear.

day of their lives. Dining in the Dark was developed by blind clergyman Jorge Spielman in the late 1990s. Blindfolded dinner guests reported a heightened and more intense experience of flavour and texture, even from quite commonplace foods like carrots, chicken and chocolate. Organisers promise Toowoomba’s event will serve up “a few close calls and plenty of laughs.” Guests will be treated to dinner prepared by executive chef Richard May-Steers from Etiquette 24/7 Catering and Events, Toowoomba. Pre-drinks are being held at The Office Bar from 5pm, and dinner is at the Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport from 6pm. Tickets are $150 each, and corporate tables of 10 are available.

A year ago the front cover of Style was graced by none other than Rachel Hohn, a beautiful Toowoomba girl and Lions Medical Research Personality Quest Entrant. A year on, 22-year-old Rachel has been named the Lions Medical Reasearch Quest Highest Fundraiser, with the area covering the majority of Queensland and northern New South Wales. Over ten months Rachel and her team, the Wilsonton Lions Club, raised a record amount of $73,210.19 that will go towards medical research at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. “My sister did this in 2012 and I’ve always had family involved in it so I’ve always wanted to be a part of it,” says Rachel. “My best friend is also terminally ill with cancer, so it’s something that is very close to me.” On top of this wonderful achievement, many people are now more aware of the needs of medical research due to the Gala Night that Rachel hosted with professor Ian Fraser at Downlands College throughout her fundraising process. Professor Fraser developed the Gardasil vaccine, and his research was sponsored by money raised from this quest. In terms of her future contributions in a charitable sense, Rachel’s generous and selfness nature is apparent. “All I wish to do is continue raising awareness and keep fundraising for the Lions Club,” Rachel says. Rachel is a registerd nurse working in the special care nursery at the Toowoomba Hospital.

Spring is here

promotion l style

There is no better feeling than to clean out all the dreary drab reminders of winter and replace them with the fresh, colourful palettes of spring. Speaking of spring cleaning how often do you give your cosmetic/skincare cupboard a clean out? These handy tips will help you know what to throw and what to keep.

MAKEUP PENCILS Update: Sharpening your eye and lip pencils regularly keeps the tip fresh, meaning you should be able to hang onto them for around two years. SHADOWS, LIPSTICKS AND GLOSS Update: Eyeshadows, lipsticks and glosses all generally last around two years. Tell-tale signs that it’s time to bin them are if the product changes consistency, scent or colour. SUNSCREEN Update: Sunscreen is the one beauty product that is required by law to have the use-by date printed on the bottle. This isn’t a guideline; sunscreen is ineffective if used after it has expired! Sunscreen can also spoil prior to its use-by date when overheated (say in a car glove box!) so discard if it’s discoloured or smells whiffy.

FOUNDATION Update: Foundations are resilient and last around 12-18 months. Just watch out for changes in colour or texture or if it no longer gives the coverage it once did. FRAGRANCE Update: Forget displaying pretty perfume bottles like trophies storing them in a cool, dark area away from sunlight preserves the scent. A perfume is past its best when the juice develops a yellowish tinge or when the scent changes. SKINCARE Update: Everyday essential skin care items like cleansers and moisturisers last about six months after they’ve been opened. Discard them if they change in colour or smell funky. FACIAL POWDER & MINERAL PRODUCTS Update: If the growing hole in the middle of your oldest pressed powder doesn’t convince you that it needs replacing, this should powders are suppose to be abandoned a year after opening.

6418312aa

MASCARA Update: Pumping a mascara wand in the tube oxidises it, making the product susceptible to bacteria contamination. Considering mascara gets applied to the sensitive eye area it should be replaced every three months. Eye infection = not pretty.

making bones a priority The team at Southside Fitness explains how to help prevent osteoporosis BY ZAIN GHAZNAVI

Typically when we think about our health we rarely think about our bones. Building healthy bones now can mean less fractures and possibly no osteoporosis in the later stages of your life. Many of us have heard of it, but what exactly is osteoporosis? It is a disease that causes bones to become less dense, and more susceptible to fractures and breaks. This can affect both men and women, but with a higher occurrence in women. However, there is good news! With a proper diet, exercise and lifestyle, osteoporosis can be easily preventable. Several university studies suggest the most effective way to increase your bone density is to do load bearing exercises two to three times a week. ‘Load bearing’ simply means any exercise where your bones are under stress from a force being applied on them. For example, a weighted squat will stress the bones in your legs and back. Similarly, a chest press exercise will stress the bones in your arms. So, what are you waiting for? Come on down to Southside Fitness and check out our wide range of free weights, weighted vests, and racks. Start working out those bones for a stronger, unbreakable you!

spring clean your pantry It’s the perfect time to do a spring clean around your house, so why not tackle your pantry and fridge while you’re at it? It makes healthy eating a lot easier when you have an organised space. Here are some tips on what to keep and what needs to go.

START WITH A CLEAN SWEEP You won’t be able to see how you can best utilise the space until everything is out, so remove everything and give the shelves and floor a good clean down.

DITCH ITEMS PAST THEIR USE BY DATE AND WELL PAST THEIR BEST BEFORE DATE

Foods which haven’t been used in the past month or that you have no need for in the near future need to be binned as well. Be honest with yourself! It’s only a waste of space.

CHECK ALL ITEMS ARE BEING STORED CORRECTLY

This is vital in preventing food spoilage and helps maintain the nutritional density of foods. Dry ingredient should be stored in airtight containers with labels to identify the ingredient and the expiry date.

THROW OUT NASTIES

Although the occasional extras won’t do damage, we don’t need to have a stock supply in our cupboards. Check the ingredient list to see what nasties have been added. Throw foods that have a long list of artificial colours, preservatives or flavours.

SWAP IT

For pantry items such as canned vegetables, choose no added salt or reduced salt varieties. Choose wholemeal flours, pastas, breads and brown rice. Choose high fibre cereals and snacks. Try to limit the purchase of bottled sauces and condiments, or have a go at making these yourself.

take back control It is an unfortunate fact that childbirth and even menopause can cause changes to the vagina, which may affect feminine wellness. Damage can diminish sensation during sexual activity, reduce satisfaction and change the relationship between partners. Whether the changes are physical, functional or relate to self image, the non-surgical treatment ThermiVa is now available at Allure Clinic, ThermiVa, for internal and external vaginal rejuvenation. Thermiva treatments use radiofrequency energy to gently heat tissues to rejuvenate collagen. Thermiva is different from other non-surgical treatments for this area because it isn’t a laser, doesn’t hurt and consequently can be used externally to gently rejuvenation. There is no discomfort or downtime. ThermiVa treatments are performed in a confidential setting with a female practitioner, and will fit into a busy woman’s schedule, with treatments taking less than an hour. Three treatments are recommended one month apart, however most patients have reported noticeable improvement in their symptoms within the first week of treatment. Women don’t want that out of control feeling about their own bodies, especially when it affects the most intimate part of their lives, and treatments can be commenced as early as 6 weeks after a vaginal delivery. Ask our team about Thermiva today, call on 1300 662 960.

It’s the little things that make a wedding really special — and incredible jewellery is one of them. Here’s how to sparkle on your big day. Weddings — they can make even the hardiest cynic tear up upon sight of the excited bride making her way down the aisle; not to mention the man waiting for her at the end. Then there’s the gathering of many loved ones in one room, united for a single cause: the celebration of two people in love, promising their lives to each other. With this comes fantastic food, a whole host of lovely new memories and — one of the best things of all — the chance to dress up in beautiful clothes. And where would stunning outfits be without jewellery? Whether it’s the bridal party, the mothers of the bride and groom, or the groom and groomsmen themselves, artfully chosen pieces can make or break a look. Which is why Central Jewellers have compiled your definitive guide to wedding jewellery that includes ideas, inspiration and handy tips to ensure the day’s finishing touches are just right.

Bridesmaids ° The style of the jewellery should complement any themes or looks going on in the bridal party and the wedding as a whole. ° Factor in the colour of the dresses: if they’re dark, lighten up the look with some colourful silver pieces. ° The cut of the dress is an important deciding factor, especially the neckline. If it’s high, opt for beautiful earrings instead of a necklace.

Bride & mothers of the bride & groom ° Opt for timeless classics like diamonds and pearls, which give a hint of heritage and heirloom. ° Buy your dress first, then your jewellery. Make sure your jewellery doesn’t overwhelm your outfit or the reverse. Less is more, though — it’s a balancing act, so the more ornate your dress, the simpler your jewellery should be. ° Pick quality pieces you can see yourself wearing again — it makes the investment that little bit more worthwhile plus you’ll forever have the memories attached.

Groom & groomsmen ° Cufflinks are imperative — there are millions to choose from and they’re a great way to add some personality to your ensemble. They also make an excellent thank you gift for groomsmen. ° Consider a plain silk pocket square for some dashing vintage appeal and visual interest. ° A necklace when simple and uncrowded by other jewellery, can add some refreshing bling to a well-cut wool suit — just make sure its tucked into his shirt

New artist Kinah McKinnon shares how she came to be an artist and now sells her work

EMERGING ARTIST: Kinah McKinnon has recently started selling her artwork after keeping it just a hobby for years.

PHOTOS: CONTRIBUTED

five minutes on the couch... Style magazine sits down and has a chat with local emerging artist Kinah McKinnon What made you get into art? I have always loved being creative and my Dad and siblings have always been quite talented with art, so it was something I picked up by watching them do it. I found that I really enjoyed it and it was something that I was good at. Is there a particular type of medium you prefer to work with? My favourite medium would be soft pastels, but I also enjoy using acrylic paints, spray paints and coloured inks. How long have you been selling your work for? I have only recently started to sell artworks. I had a few requests for it by word of mouth so I thought I would try to pursue it further. I still do art mainly for my own leisure and as gifts for family and friends. Do you have a favourite work among your own artworks? My favourite artworks to do are sketch portraits of famous people, as I love focussing on attention to detail.

My favourite sketch is of Marlon Brando. How have you experimented in your art? What were your most successful and most failed experiments? I have recently started to experiment with spray paints and really enjoy playing around with all the colours. I had one occasion where I accidentally had the can facing the wrong way and sprayed it on my face — I won't do that one again! What or who gives you inspiration to be artistic? It is just something I have always loved to do, and I find it very calming and relaxing. Are your family and friends supportive of you as an artist? My parents and family are very supportive and encouraging of me. My Dad loves to find me cool ideas to try out. Where can the general public purchase your work, and/or contact you to request one done? I have now made a Facebook page (facebook.com/ kinsartworks) and also have some pieces available for purchase at the Grand Central newsagency.

mellow yellow Announce the pleasant change in weather to the whole household

The trick to refreshing your home for spring is all things in moderation. Not only is replacing all your home decor expensive, but impractical as well. Instead incorporate accents of colour into an otherwise subdued room and give that pop of colour to mimic spring flowers doing the same in nature. Patterns are another great way to inject a dose of energy to a space without requiring an extravagant makeover. And of course, spring’s signature dish... fresh blooms! While they may cost a pretty penny, there is no real comparison to returning home to the scent and sight of fresh flowers. Cut stems diagonally and add ‘flower food’ for a longer last.

For a year or two, the now Mr and Mrs Jonathan and Renee Jackson wandered past each other on the same floor of the National Australia Bank, not knowing that in five-and-a-half years, they’d be standing at The Abbey Cobaki Lakes saying “I do”. After a particularly terrible Tuesday at the office, a drink at a bar brought the pair together, and the rest, as they say, is history. “Her parents broke the mould when they made Renee,” says Jonathan of his new wife. “She is larger than life, and sometimes she reminds me of a strange cross between a modern day Audrey Hepburn and a cartoon character with her great sense of style and happy go lucky personality, and her laugh is a ripper too — it can make other people start laughing when they hear it. “She also knows how to make everyone feel instantly at ease when she meets them — it’s an amazing thing to watch.” Jonathan certainly isn’t wrong about his medical student wife Renee — her beautiful smile tells a thousand words, her mannerisms and glances telling tales of a person who is purely and selflessly in love. “Captain romantic came up with the least romantic wedding proposal in Australia,” Renee laughs. “On our fourth anniversary, we were walking to the car on an average Saturday afternoon and as we walked past our wheelie bins, Jonathan asked if I’d like to make it official and tell our parents, and that was it — we picked up the engagement ring from the jeweller about two weeks later.” The gorgeous pair had a morning ceremony starting at 11.30am on the lawn overlooking The Abbey Cobaki Lakes in the Tweed Hinterland. All of the formalities were over by 2pm, and the afternoon was non-stop food and drinks, surrounded by friends and family in the relaxed atmosphere they were aiming for. The day was a vintage Kentucky derby-style wedding with crisp white table cloths, navy and white table runners, cut crystal vases and bright, happy flowers. The venue was scattered with picnic rugs and lots of vintage games such as chess, cards, coits, bocce and pickup sticks,

way she moves adding to the fun and relaxed feel of the day. Renee’s dress was made by Clare Greenhill of Rowen Couture in Toowoomba, who embodied her desire for a classy, conservative 1950’s tea-length dress perfectly. “Clare made it exactly how I wanted it, it was beautiful,” Renee said. Never to be forgotten, the couple’s rings certainly made an impression. Renee’s rings are an antique style; the engagement ring a copy

of a 1930s antique ring, and the wedding band was made to suit it, with fine millgrain detailing. Jonathan’s ring is a simple brushed titanium ring. The pair had their rings made by Andronis Fine Jewellery in Fortitude Valley. Renee and Jonathan kept it simple, having their brother and sister in their bridal party, and the breathtaking bride walked down the aisle to the song ‘something in the way she moves’, by James Taylor. While Jonathan and Renee were over the moon with their minimalist, relaxed wedding, they believe the highlight of their reception was Jonathan’s father’s speech. “At the age of 82, John Jackson kept everyone entertained with an incredibly witty speech,” Renee smiles. In terms of future plans, Renee is finishing her medicial degree. “We’ll hopefully fit some kids in around it during the next couple of years,” Jonathan grins.

reign on your

wedding day Go behind the scenes of the Style Front Cover Photoshoot

Nevertheless, at Style magazine we like to make the impossible possible and give our photographer Tim Swinson a challenge. We set out to capture the natural beauty that The Garden City boasts, and wanted our model to also embody the same natural beauty. Georgia Gierke, who has never modelled before, showed real talent. Perhaps something to consider on the side of her agronomy career! The Springs Garden World proved the perfect location and the stars aligned for a brief moment when the sun peeked its face out to let us capture the front cover image. Make sure to check out the behind the scenes photos on our Facebook page Style Magazines Toowoomba. Dress and Jewellery by

Ferrari Formalwear and Bridal This Madison James lace bridal gown features a contoured halter neckline edged with beads and Swarovski crystals. This is available in white silver and ivory silver as well as champagne, ivory and silver, and comes in sizes 2 to 32. The bracelet and earrings worn were supplied by Ferrari Formalwear and Bridal.

Make-up by

Mirror Mirror

Style were lucky enough to have Mirror Mirror Makeup Artistry apply their makeup for the cover. In keeping with the natural but defined theme, Georgia’s eyes popped with smokey shades that completed her own eye colour and natural strip lashes. Her base makeup was created to grow with a hint of soft contouring to ensure the definition was visible in photographs. The lip colour was custom mixed on the spot for Georgia to suit her complexion.

Flowers by

Toowoomba Flower Market Created by Dutch master florist Debby Birach-Mayer, the flowers used in the archway were Colombian roses, peppercorn berry, magnolia, hypacallama and poppies. The colours chosen for this piece are trending at the moment - peach, pinks, creams and whites. 6418323aa

As usual, something pops up when you really don’t need it to, and on cover shoot day rain was pouring when we wanting to capture a spring bride.

Hair Styling by

Minx Contemporary Hair Boutique

Archway and Location by

Hair for the shoot was styled by Minx Contemporary Hair Boutique. Minx created an upstyle that had soft volume through the front for a little bit of height. They kept with a broken-up organic texture and minimal hairspray to avoid a crunchy old-fashioned look. Around the face they left out a small amount of hair with a gentle bend rather than a curl. The aim was to give the upstyle a modern feel with a traditional elegance. The hair was styled using all L’Oreal Professional products.

The Springs Garden World has long been a popular location for weddings. Their beautiful outdoor space provides the ideal backdrop, such as this iconic water feature where our front cover image was captured. The archway is one of several items available at The Springs, and its rustic brown colouring worked beautifully with the apricot and peach tones of the floral arrangement.

the rural lawyer At Best Wilson Buckley, we know that as family lawyers we’re not on anyone’s bucket list to meet. We work in an incredibly personal area of life and the law, and it is people that make our line of work so incredibly rewarding and challenging at the same time. That’s why we celebrate the exceptional people that we have the good fortune to call our team. Andrew McCormack has practised exclusively in family law since 2005, recently promoted to senior associate at Best Wilson Buckley. He is an accredited family law specialist, and a collaboratively trained family lawyer with a interest in the impact of family law in rural areas. Why family law? The answer is pretty simple, I love a challenge [and] practising in family law means that you need to know more than just family law. On a daily basis I am trying to help people [and] I don’t always know the answers to their questions, and I readily admit that To help them I need to work with other professionals who are trained in these areas and can provide solutions, [and] at the end of it, I get a lot of satisfaction knowing I have helped someone as best as I can. How do you unwind? What do you do in your spare time? Yoga and gardening. Most Saturdays you’ll find me at Bunnings or Masters in my yoga gear with my daughters in tow. What is number one on your bucket list? I’d love the chance to study somewhere like Cambridge. It was founded in 1209 [and] my alma mater, UQ, has only been around since 1909. Who was your childhood hero growing up? "It’s a toss-up between Satler and Waldorf from the Muppet Show or The Count from Sesame Street." There is no Toowoomba wedding venue that captures the beauty of this tradition better than Queensland’s State Rose Garden in Newtown Park.

wedding cake time Forget the wedding cakes of old — hoards of people are leaving those behind in favour of alternate wedding treats such as dessert tables, individual sweets, wacky cakes, lolly stands and more. As people are coming more diverse in a number of different areas across their weddings such as fashion, venue, flowers and more, the options and designs of cakes are growing as well. It’s no longer just simply a fruit cake with white marzipan — many cake decorators will give you a variety of different options in terms of flavours or designs, and will work with you to create an artwork as well as a wonderful bite to eat. Websites such as Pinterest offer wonderful inspiration to create your perfect cake. It’s best to print off these ideas and take them to your chosen cake decorator so that you can create your masterpiece together.

the new pace setter BY IAIN CURRY

Ah, Jaguar. The very name conjures images of classic drop-top sports cars, luxury limousines and race cars piloted by dashing drivers. So what’s this? An SUV with a Jag badge? Yes, the famous British marque has hopped on the hottest bandwagon in town by offering an all-wheel drive high rider: the F-Pace. But really, it’s the car Jaguar had to make. Penned by the same designer responsible for some of the most spectacular Aston Martin and Jaguar sports cars of the last two decades, the F-Pace oozes presence, class and the impression of speed. Will any be used off-road? Of course not, but the new Jaguar SUV will be the latest must-have for stylish school run mums, joining the likes of SUVs offered by Porsche, BMW, Mercedes and Range Rover. The F-Pace looks expensive, doesn’t it? But a drive away price of price of $83,990 for the 20d Prestige diesel looks fine value indeed. You can pay over $120,000 for the range topper which hits 100kmh in just 5.5 seconds, but all F-Paces offer leather interiors, as you’d expect in a Jaguar. Such is the cachet of the Jaguar brand, the starting price and the unquestionable style, the F-Pace is set to be Jag’s best seller in Australia in no time at all.

I have always loved jaguars – I love their style and simple elegance – also my father and brother drive them, plus I already owned an XKS and have kept it for my long work trips into country NSW when I load it up with equipment and product. I think the F-type has a sexy profile. I enjoy the manual version of my car to drive to and from work, as well as to the oval where I run several times a week. It also has plenty of understated power on the open road. I would definitely recommend this car to others. ~ Dr Julie Bradford

ALL-NEW F-PACE

ABOVE ALL, IT’S A JAGUAR.

Welcome to Jaguar as you’ve never seen it before. Now you can enjoy the dramatic drive and beauty Jaguar is renowned for, with added practicality. Inspired by F-TYPE, its powerful, muscular looks give the All-New F-PACE a head-turning road presence. And it delivers the connected steering feel and sharp, responsive handling of a sports car too, thanks to its aluminium double wishbone front and Integral Link rear suspension.

As the title suggests, the storyline of the movies includes Bridget finding herself unexpectedly pregnant. Now in her forties, Bridget finds herself single again when she breaks up with Mark Darcy. Everything is going well until Bridget discovers she’s pregnant and is only 50 per cent sure if the father is Mark or Jack. As well as the three main characters, the cast will include Academy Award winner Emma Thompson. It is produced by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner as well as Debra Hayward. The film hits the cinemas on September 16, with an advanced screening for Chicks at the Flicks on Wednesday, September 7.

japan at its finest Japan is many things, and stunning is certainly one of them. There are some wonderful Japanese wedding traditions that are surprising to others, yet a pride of the nation. Called the yuino in Japanese, the engagement ceremony is predominantly an exchange of gifts. The most popular gifts include seaweed called ‘konbu’ that refers to ‘child-bearing woman’, white hemp that sends wishes of growing old together, and a folding fan for future wealth. Most weddings take place in Shinto temples, with water pavilions, stone dogs and tall red gates symbolising the division between the corporeal and spiritual worlds being in abundance.

50

There is also the sake-sharing ceremony, ‘San-San-Kudo’, that is traditional in both Buddhist and Shinto Japanese weddings. There are three stacked cups of sake, and both the bride and groom have to take three sips, as the name suggests. Japanese culture believes this represents love, wisdom and happiness, while others believe it represents earth, heaven and mankind. Women will almost always wear white, and grooms will usually opt for black, but often wear kimonos. It is common for brides to wear a white silk hood over their hair called a ‘wataboshi’, as it represents humility and modesty.

jewel of queensland BY CLARE STANDFAST

As I stepped off the plane at Cairns and noticed the backdrop of lush green hills, I was immediately reminded of Phuket, Thailand. How had I never been here, I wondered? I had this absolute gem right in my backyard. However, I wasn’t staying in Cairns — I was heading an hour north, to Port Douglas. Colloquially known as Port, I hit the town on Saturday night, and was pleasantly surprised by the mixture of people I met. This small town of just over 3000 people attracts people from across the world, all of whom have their own — and often very interesting — story. People complained how cold the night was at 23 degrees, and all I could do was laugh and think of Toowoomba. The next day brought something I was very much looking forward to — visiting the Great Barrier Reef. Believe me when I tell you, it is truly something you can’t miss. Being one of the seven natural wonders of the world, it is bigger than the Great Wall of China and is the only living thing on earth visible from space. As I went out on the reef with the team from Quicksilver Cruises, I had no idea what I was in for. I’ve snorkelled in some beautiful parts of the world, but to be completely honest — nothing compares to the Great Barrier Reef. Upon slipping into the crystal blue water, my eyes were hit by flashes of every colour under the rainbow. Incredible coral was abundant, with brilliantly coloured fish slipping in and out of it, coming presumptuously close.

A few green sea turtles came past at their leisure, and I was completely taken aback — I had never seen them in their natural environment, and it was spectacular. After doing some ocean-walking, I went out to a helipad to take a joy flight over the reef. Now, after going up in the chopper I realised that there may be plenty of beautiful pictures of the Great Barrier Reef, but absolutely nothing — and I mean nothing — will ever do it justice besides seeing it with your own eyes. The jade and sapphire shades of the water glinted in my eyes. I held my breath, hoping to capture the moment for longer. Coral reefs and ‘bommies’ were visible, and sparkling white sand glowed on the islands further off. I was very sad to see the reef gone for the day, but my trip was not over — I was headed to Mossman Gorge. Surrounded by beautiful, tall trees and farming land, the Mossman Gorge is truly spectacular. Following my friend along a dirt path scattered with rocks and logs, I hiked up and down, loving the beautiful green surrounds that encapsulated me. By the time we reached our destination, I was blown away. I could could see the sand at the bottom of the freshwater gorge, through the clear water running through. The beautiful big rocks, shaped over centuries of water, sat strong in the gorge. I clambered across them (or at least tried to), taking in the tranquility and revelling in the Daintree region. My advice? Book your flights to Cairns ladies and gents.

Creating your home sanctuary

Say “I do” with your most glamorous self

BY ASHLEY MCEWAN, THE SPRINGS GARDEN WORLD

BY SARAH SCHRODTER, PURE GLAMOUR MAKEUP ARTISTRY

Spring is well and truly here, and what better time to rejuvenate the place you spend your downtime. We have seen a big swing in the last six years of people doing away with formal lounge and dining areas and wanting to merge their indoor/outdoor areas. Especially with the Australian climate, it pays to set up your outdoor space as a sanctuary; a place to escape and unwind. It’s a matter of dressing that up, whether that be plants or wall art, to create a really great space. You want to consider your overall colour palate and plan the space before you begin. Just like building or renovating, seek good expert advice before you begin so you can coordinate the whole project. It’s important to choose something that suits your lifestyle. Busy people may need pebbled gardens rather than plants that need a lot of care for example. Water features are also extremely popular and can add that finishing element to a garden space, as well as offer the tranquil sound of bubbling water. It’s all about creating a place that gives you enjoyment and comfort, and making the most of the space you already have. Many homes have underutilised space that can really be brought to life, and talking to people who work in that area really helps with ideas and inspiration. Mood lighting for verandas as well as garden lights, candles or tea lights can also add that special something to your home. This is particularly great if you are a household that enjoys entertaining. Contact Ashley at The Springs Garden World on 4636 8484. 333 Spring St, Kearneys Spring

There are so many things to organise for your wedding and a list as long as your arm is quickly forming. It will be one of the most photographed days of your life, so here are some expert tips to make sure you look picture perfect. Find a good artist – Not only will they help you choose a look that suits, they’ll have the knowledge of products and application to make certain your makeup lasts for hours, photographs beautifully and looks stunning in person. Always check out the artist’s portfolio of recent brides prior to booking. Have a trial – Make sure you have a full makeup application done (including lashes if you desire) and wear it for the day. Take pictures in natural light and with flash to see how it photographs. Follow up with your makeup artist and let them know of any changes that need to be made. Avoid makeup trends – These images will be cherished for a lifetime so try to avoid statement looks. Stick with classic shapes and neutral colours that suit your skin tone. Aim to be the most glamorous version of yourself. Consider the theme of the day and how you usually like to wear your makeup. More dramatic bridal looks can be a great choice too, such as a red lip and winged liner for a vintage wedding. Skin prep is important – Start a good skin care regime at least three months prior to your wedding day. Know your skin type and use appropriate products. Perhaps consider a facial or even two. Also, wear sunscreen daily on your face, neck and chest to avoid pigmentation and suntan lines from developing. Touch up – Have one of your bridesmaids carry blotting papers, powder compact and lipstick in her bag so you can freshen up your makeup. finance | style I can’t stress this point enough. Please, don’t wait until the last minute to get answers to important questions, and please don’t be shy about the topics you discuss. Think about it this way — would you start a company with a friend if you were unsure about their personal finances or how they handled money? Of course not! So, don’t start a marriage with those kinds of doubts either. Make sure you understand each other’s spending habits, current credit card debt, student loans, future plans, how your accounts will — or won’t — be blended after the wedding, and the like.

the ‘I’ in ‘we’ BY MANAGING DIRECTOR AND SENIOR FINANCIAL PLANNER OF CREATE FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS, LEANNE MCDONALD

It is important to understand every aspect of joint finances that are established through marriage

Since so many women will be tying the knot over the next few months, it’s a great time for me to offer some practical, financial advice. So what should you know about finances before you get married? And what’s the most important thing you should find out about your fiancé’s finances before the big day? Generally my responses are very similar — if you’re getting married there are three rather straightforward points: brides and grooms-to-be need to communicate about finances, consider their financial options and continue to be financially independent. Communicate You and your fiancé need to talk openly about finances.

www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

Consider As in, ‘consider financial options’. These days, there are several options available to those who want to preserve their financial independence and keep assets as separate property. For example, years ago, ‘prenups’, (prenuptial agreements), were only associated with older, affluent or celebrity couples, but that’s simply not the case these days. By using a prenup, both the husband-to-be and the wife-to-be can decide certain financial issues in advance. Seek some legal advice about binding financial arrangements. Continue Continue to be financially independent, or at least somewhat. Part of the romance of getting married involves sharing your hopes, your dreams, and your life with the person you love. However, for your marriage to be successful and for you to maintain your own financial security and stability, you must preserve a measure of financial independence.

it’s about you Your wedding day is certainly a spectacular moment in time, and it’s very easy to get caught up in all of the preparations — there’s so much to organise, look forward to and think about. However, it’s easy to get wrapped up in the stress of this and push to the side the reason why you’re actually going through it all — to marry the love of your life. Remember, before you walk down the aisle, to look around the area you’re getting married and at the love of your life and simply take a deep breath — they’re what you’re here for.

Style Mag samples the perfect dining destination as the warmer weather eases into Toowoomba

hooked on you BY LISA MACHIN

Just in time to welcome in the warmer weather, Toowoomba’s recent entrant to the dining scene is dishing up the goods. A modern twist on an Aussie favourite of fish and chips, Bonito Fish ‘n’ Grill offers a fine dining experience where table service is valued and food quality and presentation are a source of pride. I am greeted by owners Jo and Alan Willson, who found the restaurant’s namesake while visiting Brazil. The town of Bonito, Potugese for beautiful, is landlocked, yet its rivers are filled with corals. It was here the Willsons found inspiration for Bonito Fish ‘n’ Grill; great steak and char grill, fresh seafood and salads. I am first served the Bonito Burger, no small feat for a person my size! The pièce de résistance is the homemade beef pattie, with its hickory smoked flavour leaving a pleasant zing on the palate. I also sample Bonito’s summer classic Seafood Basket, perfect for the coming months. Unlike the oily, wicker basket images a ‘seafood basket’ conjures, this plated meal is comprised of seafood bought whole

from Stoney’s and prepared by Bonito’s chef, right down to the handmade tempura batter. My favourite dish however is the Surf ‘n’ Turf 300g rib fillet topped with juicy prawns and half a Moreton Bay bug (fresh from Stoney’s no less!) cooked in garlic sauce and served with sides. The steak is a generous portion and cooked to order, its tenderness complementing the succulent seafood toppers, and oh is that bug divine! The presentation of the meal transports you to those coral adorned rivers of Bonito, with salad rosettes shaped like coral and the scallops beautifully shucked and prepared in their shells, fit for a mermaid banquet. Bonito offers the perfect mix of grill and seafood, boasting menu options from char-grilled steak or calamari through to baked barramundi, lamb and pork. There is a selction of wines and other drinks available and the Davey Jones Locker for two available for the true seafood lovers. It is the ideal place to sit and enjoy fresh, local food with good company.

it’s in the stars September is not the month to be petty — any work problems can be sorted diplomatically without losing your cool. It could be time for a holiday, so start planning the perfect getaway.

Capricorn

Oh pool boy, bring me another martini! And this time, make it a double. Life has more in store for you, so this could be the best time in your life if only you took time out to relax more.

Aries

Cancer

Life deals some horrendous blows at times but it is what makes us stronger in the end. You are just starting to feel comfortable, so think of the good times and that should have the planets whizzing around to keep up with you.

It’s time to make big changes in your life, and planning your year ahead can only bring positive vibes into your life. If taking up a new health regime, I recommend yoga or spending some time meditating to zen out.

Sagittarius

You will feel the strain of the large burden you are currently carrying, but have faith by the end of the month you will see the glass as being half full not half empty. A huge weight will be lifted from your shoulders.

Pisceans may feel out of their depth this month, with added pressures at home and work may have you ready to clean your fishbowl and move on. You might need to find a bigger bowl to escape from the world.

Grab the bull by the horns and go for it, good friends are not hard to come by, you just need to work harder at finding out who is messing with your mojo. Shake off any bad vibes, get outdoors and breathe deeply.

Gemini’s will feel the full workload this month, but don’t be tempted to burn the midnight oil, you need some time out to spend with family and friends. There could be someone special coming into your life.

Money is all around you now, so whether you are winning big or trying hard to stay afloat, just keep paddling. All financial matters will be dealt during this month — you could be in for a huge boost to your bank account.

Amazing good vibes are surrounding you at the moment with the eclipse around your sign in the next twelve months looking fantastic. Be aware of who you allow into your inner circle.

Libra

Make a wish then count to ten, especially at the beginning of the month. If you have personal goals that you want to achieve, now is the time to get organised and plan for the future.

You work hard for your money and your career is beginning to reap the rewards that you most definitely deserve. If you are after the top job start planning now, it is just within your grasp.
