PETER WENN ASBA President

T

HE SIMMENTAL ANNUAL is a publication mailed out to all members around Australia and is widely used as a promotional tool for the Simmental members. It gives me great pleasure in presenting this annual summer edition to you all. Each issue we try to contain industry news, calendar of events, breed development improvements along with sales and royal show results, commercial stories and achievements of twhe Simmental breed.w This year our AGM was held in Launceston, Tasmania and we thank the Tasmania branch for hosting a successful itinerary including farm tours and places of interest. We welcome elected board member - Councillor Michael Frankcombe (Slopes Simmental Stud) and my sincere thanks to Aleasha Goss for her contribution towards the council. Also settling into her new role, Executive Officer- Felicity Reeves has been welcomed after Carmel Mills resigned due to health issues. Around the sale yards and members stud sales have detailed some record prices achieved. It certainly has been a great time to sell and for many producers reaping the rewards. “Around the Yards” has been introduced to our social media pages and indicates the fantastic prices being obtained. By infusing Simmentals into your herd performance details the demand for high carcase yields of saleable beef being reached. 2016 has seen an increase in carcase results within the industry, around Australia. With Simmentals presenting many great accomplishments at royal and feedlot competitions, it highlights the broadness of the breed and how over the years, we have improved genetic data and traits. The 2016 “Paddock to Palate” winners were sired by Simmental bulls showcasing the depth, quality and consistency being a high priority amongst the winners. I believe these competitions are the ability to move the Simmental beef industry into the future.

At the same time as the China delegation in August 2016, I attended the World Simmental-Fleckvieh Federation (WSFF) Congress in Poland along with over 200 other delegates from around the world. Polish Simmental Cattle Breeders Association President, Edgar Benes along with a great team warmly welcomed everyone and listed a wonderful itinerary. The WSFF and ESF Council meetings included business sessions, election of board members, technical plenary sessions and a closing gala dinner with presentations. I feel greatly honoured to have been elected as 2nd Vice President of the WSFF with 1st Vice President Mr Sebastian Auemig (Austria) and working under the newly elected President of the WSFF – Mr Fred Schuetze – (USA). Working together with Fred, Sebastian and the entire team we are focusing on the future establishment of the countries, breed publicity and promotions and technical project reports. The future of the Simmental breed in Australia is certainly advancing and creating the next level in performance data and breed traits by continuing breeding positive selection criteria. By improving these trend markers you assist the end producers with greater genetics and in the end greater profits. Incorporating members with networking, commitment, marketing, research is part of the recipe for the success of our breed – the next level in performance. As I mentioned in my last report, the continuing tasks of maintaining an operational, functional office and breed society can, at times be challenging and I appreciate the feedback, this past year from members. I would also like to thank our Executive Officer – Felicity Reeves, Administration Registrar – Claudia Scott and my fellow councilors for their input this past year, it is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, I wish all the members a successful 2017.

Enquiry and demand has been extremely strong from international society representatives and Australian rural export companies regarding approved Simmental genetics being exported with breeding valuation data. This year we had a delegation from China visit our ASBA office along with an Australian delegation trade mission tour to China. The trade mission sort further interest by farms and companies to continue exporting more quality heifers with data, along with certified approved bulls. A full detailed story has been included in this magazine and I thank the delegation team for attending.

Michael Frankcombe has accepted the position of director for Tasmania, and will replace outgoing committee member Aleasha Goss. Mr Frankcombe is no stranger to the role, having previously spent 13 years on the council. Mr Frankcombe said he enjoyed his time on the council before, and he decided it was time to have another go. “It certainly is rewarding and satisfying, to be able to shape the way things can go. As councillors, we are all trying to do things that will benefit the breed,” Mr Frankcombe said. Mr Frankcombe has been breeding Simmental cattle since 1985, and has his own stud under the name of Slopes Simmentals. He is the third generation of his family to run cattle near Sheffield in the north-west of Tasmania. He said cattle have changed throughout the years, and these days he breeds a number of Black Simmental and Simangus bulls, as well as a few traditional Simmentals, to meet the demands of the bull market.

executive

officer’s report W

ELCOME TO THE 2016 SUMMER EDITION of the Simmental Magazine and what a positive year for the beef industry it has been with amazing prices in the yards this year for commercial stock and our highest averages reached for our seedstock.

any favours in our promotion and breeding. Note: ASBA does have SimAngus, Simbrah, Simbeef and Simmental ear tags just for that purpose and yes, this is an unashamed plug, but remember we can’t promote what we don’t know about.

As the need for sires, whether terminal or for on-breeding rises as the female herd increases again, we need to keep in mind the traits buyers are looking for and make sure quality is in the quantity that’s being offered.

E-newsletters have been circulated via email every two months this year with updates from the federal meetings, what’s happening on the sale and show circuit, office updates etc. Essential for those who don’t have access to social media but still enjoy a sit down read.

Simmental Australia prides itself on the depth and correctness of its DNA database. The complexity of the herdbook registering program, governed by our stringent regulations, is such that members can be sure that we provide a very distinct and accurate service to breeders and potential buyers.

On to promotion. Here at the office, we are very happy to promote your sale on the web and on social media and it’s free. You can also have a private treaty sale on the website for a small fee. If you see a post about an upcoming sale and you’re social media savvy, share it.

Keeping the herdbook up-to-date has been Registrar - Claudia Scott’s primary task for around 8 1/2 years now and it was great to see her hard work and loyalty repaid to her, when she and husband Brad were invited to the AGM in Tasmania in May.

If you’ve had a sale and want us to post your results, tag us in yours. Anyone needing help or doesn’t have a social media platform, then please contact us directly so we can do it for you on ours.

There’s nothing like meeting the members face-to-face and seeing what it’s like on the breeder’s property and seeing the cattle up close.

So what can we expect in 2017? Perhaps a steadying of the market price for cattle as the numbers build from the downturn of previous years, but still good seasons look to be on the horizon.

As a new member of the team this year, I have been working on boosting the profile of ASBA on the social media platform. We’ve grown in leaps and bounds on Facebook and Twitter with the introduction of regular posts each week people can depend on.#ThrowbackThursday has been going a few months now where we put our photos from the Simmental history files on the website. I believe the history of the breed is very important to be kept just a click away and everyone can contribute, everyone can share and reach a wide audience.

The demand for export heifers and bulls is high and we need to capitalise on this or others will, so we need to collectively work on meeting those needs of our overseas buyers.

Around the Yards has been on the website and shared to Facebook and Twitter most of the year focussing on the prices of the commercial sales all over Australia. It’s important to see where the trends are, how far the breed travels and gives us an idea of how the overall cattle industry fares.

ASBA was invited by the Red Angus Society to have a joint National Show and Sale in June at Dubbo in 2017. We look forward to entries from all over Australia to make this a success. Again promote, promote, promote is the key - gone are the days when the agents did it all for you. Wise words I read on one of our e-newsletters, “remember, you can’t promote a secret”. Felicity Reeves

That being said, I need input from you as vendors to send me information and ensure your agents are naming the breed in their market reports as Simmental X. The euro cross, black baldies for example doesn’t do the breed

WSFF PRESIDENT Fred Schuetze, visits Australia to judge at Melbourne Show The Royal Melbourne Show Australia

A

USTRALIA has always been one of my favorite places to visit and the trip to judge the Royal Melbourne Show as well as touring around to visit different Stud Farm operations was very special to me. The hospitality of the show officials was excellent, along with that of the Australian Simmental Breeders Association and much gratitude needs to go to Peter and Vanessa Wenn for arranging the entire trip and making sure that I was well taken care of during my stay at the show, as well as touring around the country visiting Simmental breeders and seeing first hand the production of Simmental genetics in the pasture where it all begins.

Visiting Gina Ryan’s Glenview Del Simmental Stud

I had not judged the Royal since 2009, so I was interested to see the progress that the Simmental breeders had made in their genetics, as well as the cattle from the other breeds that were present at the expo. The Simmental breeders have done an excellent job in improving the genetics both phenotypically and genotypic and I must say that as I watched the interbreed show, all breeds present had done the same. I really enjoyed the interbreed judging because it allows a person to see all breeders at one time to compare each individually, as well as collectively against one another. As I toured around the country, I saw the same pattern of genetic improvement in the pastures that I evaluated in the classes at the Royal. As you observed the cattle in the country where you could see generation to generation the pattern of smaller framed, thicker made cattle was very evident and the trend seemed to be that these smaller framed, softer cattle is where the breeds want to be to meet the needs of the industry in today’s market place.

Garry Gillett, John Leek, Fred Schuetze and Greg Templeton on Greg’s property.

I believe that Simmental Australia, under the direction of Peter Wenn and the rest of the council are setting the stage for explosive growth of the breed in Australia once again, with the emphasis of smaller frames, thicker made cattle that are very fertile with tremendous carcass quality, along with the phenotypes of cattle that reach sexual maturity at an early age, breed calves and then breed back with all this built on sound feet and legs. Peter Wenn has just been elected as the second Vice-President of the World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation, where I serve as President and it is one of our major goals to bring beef Fleckvieh Simmentals into the main stream of the federation, that in the past has focused on milking Fleckvieh Simmental and with Peter’s help I am sure that we can get this accomplished. Again it was a great trip that was very rewarding to me to see how the association and the cattle are trying to meet the needs of the Australian beef industry.

Fred Schuetze sashing the Grand Champion Simmental Female, Woonallee Charo

Congratulations to all and a huge THANK YOU for making my trip as memorable as any that I have had and if you are ever in Texas be sure and stop by BHR so that I can show you some Texas hospitality. Fred Schuetze Director of Livestock Operations Buzzard Hollow Ranch

Trade Mission to China

19th August to 28th August 2016

The next level in performance

R

ECENTLY Simmental Australia conducted a Trade Mission to China led by Mr Garry Gillett, Vic, Simmental Australia, Vice President, Mrs Audrey Weightman, WA, Simmental Australia Director and delegates Mr David Weightman, WA, Mr Brad Patterson, WA and Mrs Sylvia Patterson, WA. Some of the places visited were The Institute of Animal Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences where Professor Junya Li, Leader of Chinese beef cattle breeding and Chairman of the Chinese Simmental Association gave an informative presentation of the Chinese breeding programs and Simmental herd makeup in China. The trade mission started in Beijing with the delegates having a few hours to tour the imposing Tiananmen Square bordered by the Great Hall of the People. In the afternoon they visited Fu Hua cattle farm and beef feedlot. This company was established in 1997. It has three slaughter plants imported from Germany, 2,000 employees and processes 80,000 cattle and 200,000 sheep annually. They also have a catering division with about 150 Hot Pot restaurants throughout China (50 in Beijing). This division just out of Beijing has a feedlot capacity of 3000 but is currently feeding about 1000 head. They are currently slaughtering 2 days per week processing 150 per day. Young bulls enter the feedlot at a starting weight of 300 Kg and are slaughtered at 2 year old weighing 600 Kg with a Daily weight gain of 1 Kg day. They are fed 3 times per day and watered twice daily. The ration consists of Maize stalk silage, wheat bran, cotton seed, mineral mix and Bi Carbonate. Still in Beijing, the delegates visited the Institute of Animal Science where Professor Li provided an overview of the work being undertaken at this educational institution where they met Wen Jie, Deputy Director General, Junya Li, Professor, Leader of Chinese beef cattle breeding, Lupei Lu, Associate Professor, member of Chinese beef cattle breeding, Xue Gao, Associate Professor, member of Chinese beef cattle breeding, Lingyang Xu, Associate Professor, member of Chinese beef cattle breeding, Yan Chen, Associate Professor, member of Chinese beef cattle breeding, Peng Guo, Associate Professor, member of Chinese beef cattle breeding, Zhu Dong & Xu Wenli (Lily & Dong Cattle Stud Pty, Ltd also in South Australia), and Xiaoliang from Austrex. The Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) is a national, integrative agricultural Scientific research organization

SIMMENTAL SUMMER 2016

The Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) Overview. with responsibility for carrying out both basic and applied research, as well as research into new technologies impacting agriculture. CAAS is dedicated to overcoming a broad range of challenges impacting agricultural development and support of the local rural economy. Importantly, CAAS promotes sustainable agriculture within and outside China, extending its reach through technology exchange and cooperative research agreements with agricultural research Institutions/universities domestically and internationally, and global non-governmental organisations. In the afternoon they visited Mr Wu’s privately owned dairy farm. This farm was established in the year of 2011 and has about 800 dairy cows. The owner of this farm has overcome difficulties of depression period of Chinese dairy industry and now the business has been rising gradually. The owner of this farm has been granted “Outstanding agricultural entrepreneur of Beijing”. His next plan is to establish another bigger dairy farm on Inner Mongolian grassland. The manager, Mr Chen, said because of the downturn in the dairy industry in China, the company was now looking to change its focus toward beef. He suggested the possibility of a joint venture with Simmental Australia to import heifers and even the possibility of SimAngus heifers as they were interested in marbled beef and because Japanese Wagyu is forbidden they had recently imported some Wagyu from Australia. It was explained to Mr Chen that Simmental Australia was not an exporter but an organisation to promote the breed for all its members. Mr Chen was invited to submit an expression of interest with his proposal and to be discussed at board level and

Day 5 Wednesday 24 August Beijing – Changchun the viability with Australian exporters. Wednesday saw an early morning flight to Chang Chun, Jilin Provence and then a drive to Yitong County to visit the biggest cattle breeding and trading market in North East China. The trading variety in this market is mainly Simmental with most being cross breed. In the hot summer the farmers do not bring their cattle to the market, but instead ask the agents and the businessmen buyers to visit their farms, up to 300 km away to choose the best cattle. The daily trading volume is around 200 to 300 head per day. It was interesting to see each house in the township, kept cattle in a small feedlot ranging from 10 to 50 head. These cattle are fed chopped cornstalk with some grain and spent maize after ethanol has been produced. All bulls are kept entire and bull meat is preferred, most of the bulls are tethered. Thursday saw the delegates drive to Tongliao, about 280km where they visited Man-Gen Agriculture Development Co, Ltd or Lily &Dong, who have purchased a 485 hectare property at Robe, South Australia where they run 250 stud Simmental breeders. Lily & Dong have made an investment for future farming opportunities. They planted trees, drilled bores, built up electrical facilities and the irrigation system, then established a stud farm of Simmental cattle in 2004. The property now consists of 200 hectares of crop, 50 hectares grazing and 180 hectares of Poplar trees. They usually raise 500 Simmental cows with their calves. They also have a feedlot which can supply 800 head of beef cattle per year to the local market.

These heifers will be tested and grown out and the best 30% will go into embryo production. The remainder will be sold to breeding farms. The same criteria was applied to the imported bulls. At the conclusion of the visit, it was clear from discussions with Professor Li that they would like to develop a closer relationship with Simmental Australia, in regards to exchange of Genomic and performance data. With the number of Simmental genetics from Australia combined with their progeny in China and their use of Canadian, New Zealand, Argentina, Uruguay and Costa Rica genetics could only help expand our database. They are also interested in the possibility of a future joint venture breeding centre. In discussion with Mr Sun, Director of the Tongliao Breeding Centre, it was apparent that they would need to continue to import bulls from Australia but this may reduce in time as they improve their own sire lines. He also indicated the need to increase the import of female Simmental and improve the quality of the females they select. He was aware that to achieve this they would need to pay a lot more for quality seed stock. It also seems that private or independent business enterprises may be looking to import heifers and possibly SimAngus as there is some interest in marbled beef. There has been a follow up visit from Chinese delegates to WA since our visit to China with the aim of importing more of our heifers and bulls. We look forward to the future.

by Garry Gillett

In 2001, Lily & Dong leased a 500 hectare wilderness area from the local government for a period of 50 years. In China, the government owns all the land and anyone who would like to do agricultural business has to lease the land from the government. That may be the key reason why most farmers in China do not invest in the land they lease, so poor efficiency and productivity prevails. Still in Tongliao and the delegates visited the Mongolian Kerchin Seed stock park breeding and semen centre where bulls are housed in modern buildings with individual pens opening to outer yards. This Breeding station is only 1 of 42 in Inner Mongolia. The station has just been completed and will have only 100 bulls for the time being producing 2,000,000 doses of semen annually. Here the delegation saw heifers imported from WA in June 2016.

The market continues to grow for Simmental cattle in China T HERE have been 11 plane loads of bulls with the biggest numbers of Simmentals over the last nine years. The market depends on commercial environment at the time. This year has seen a downturn in requirements for bulls with only three Simmentals needed. Usually more are required. The semen centres have also been subjected to some rationalisation so a little uncertainty in this years market. Initial research is suggesting things will be better in 2017.

the selection criteria which is similar to import criteria. Each bull is assessed on merit based on Australian EBV’s. All other bull’s semen will have to be sold on the open market. The favoured animal is traditional coloured, the more white the better. These sort of cattle blend in well with the local Simmentals and other breeds. When bulls arrive in China they are given a China Beef Index (CBI) which is heavily weighted for growth.

Heifers are always in demand for Cat 1 (purebred) and Commercial. There does not seem to be any slackening of numbers at this stage.

The CBI is measured and calculated by the Ministry of Agriculture. They are also measured for a phenotypic value as well, which is included in the CBI.

Government protocols and policy impacts heavily.

There are very few cuts of beef sold. Rib fillet is as good as brisket in most cooking recipes, so big growth animals are the order of the day.

Duty exemptions apply if cattle meet certain specifications for genetic value. The FTA will eventually see the duty lowered to zero but semen subsidies will still apply to those bulls meeting

HE Polish Simmental Cattle Breeders Association The Polish Simmental Cattle Breeders Association held the 21st Congress of the World Simmental-Fleckvieh Federation in Poland and certainly delivered a full pre and post tour of the country. Commencing with the beautiful historical city of Krakow, the Polish breeders welcomed everyone with the old Polish saying: “make yourself at home”.

Recently appointed 2nd Vice President of the WSFF in Arlamow Hotel, Poland In Poland the Simmental Cattle appeared at the end of the 18th Century, mainly in the southern vicinity of Krakow, Silesia and in the borderlands. In the beginning of the 19th Century the first achievements of the Polish Breeders in breeding Simmental cattle are recorded. The Podkarpacie region, which was the cradle of the Simmental breed, is one of the three regions dominant in breeding cows. It is a region rich in natural grassland, preferred for the purposes or organic production. Upon arrival in Krakow

Many years ago a group of people from Poland and Switzerland came up with a project under the name “The Alps for the C a r p a t h i a n s ”, however similar activities were also undertaken by cattle farmers over 150 years ago. “The greatest gift that the Alps gave to the Carpathians and later to other countries are the Simmental cattle”, Polish President Mr Edgar Benes says.

Owners Mieczystawa and Jan Tylka’s cows enjoying the sunshine in Tokarnia, Poland some delegates attended a pre-congress tour to the infamous Auschwitz-Birkenau German Nazi camp, then a city sightseeing tour including the old Jewish quarters. To many, this is something they will never forget. The following day, a tour was arranged with lunch to the Wieliczka Historic Salt mine. Salt was mined in Wieliczka from the middle ages until 1996. From here, the congress delegates headed to the Malopolska Biotechnics Centre (MBC). This bull station was established in Rzesnow in 1955, and now with the head office in Kranse, is a brand with a tradition spanning 50 years. MBC is the only insemination company in Poland, possessing long-term experience in the implementation of breeding programs for the Simmentals. The organisers presented the delegation with a bull parade which included a short presentation and statistics on each animal. After the Biotechnics site visit, an “Opening Ceremony” which included talks from the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development member, Govenor and Marshall of the Podkarpackie Region and members of the Polish Federation of Cattle and Breeders and Dairy Farmers. The WSFF and ESF council meetings took place the following day whilst accompanying persons attended two farm tours and a visit to the Museum of Folk architecture in Sanok. First stop

The delegation then attended the farm of Daniela and Andrezej Wais whose farm specialises in Simmental cattle breeding. The farm consists of 30 hectares of which 25 hectares are grassland the balance are crops. At present there are 60 head of cattle in the herd including 32 cows. The farm has been using the best bulls from the MBC centre and is able to accomplish high productivity in the herd. The afternoon ended in a forest railway ride in the Bieszczady region followed by dinner. The railway was built at the end of the 19th century and used by the inhabitants of this mountainous area as an important transport route. The next day the WSFF business sessions commenced with an opening, welcome greeting and full agenda of sessions including the World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation election of the board and the Presidency along with technical sessions including phenotypic and genetic trends in the Polish Simmental cattle population. This full day ending in a Gala dinner and closing ceremony in Arlamow.

SIMMENTAL SUMMER 2016

Our last day of the congress took the delegates to the 12th National Simmental Cattle Exhibition in Rudawka Rymanowska where Simmental cattle started to be promoted on a broad scale at the first show in 1993. This National Show holds around 58 head of Simmental cattle from the area, and each year breeders want to return to present their animals. The Polish Simmental Breeders Association along with its organisers should be proud of their achievements; they made everyone feel welcome. We thank them for the wonderful gifts and hospitality they showed and the ASBA appreciate this. Polish President Edgar Benes says, “We are happy that this huge Simmental family worldwide also includes our small association - The Polish Simmental Cattle Breeders Association. by Vanessa Wenn

dominates carcase comps A

RMIDALE producers Rob and Kelly Lamoureux have dominated two prestigious carcase competitions this year, with some Simmental cross steers that they bred themselves. Rob and Kelly won the champion and reserve champion pen of five steers at the Beef Spectacular Feedback Trial in January, and then they travelled interstate to take out the champion and grand champion steer titles in the Brisbane Exhibition’s Paddock to Palate competition. Rob said they had never entered a competition like these before, but they got the idea after some of their steers were successful for someone else in 2015.

competition. We expected to do well because we knew they were good steers, but they were younger which meant it took longer to get them to the size of the other entries. We didn’t expect to take out any major prizes. “Our steers were fed for 70 days, and at the end we were awarded the overall champion and reserve champion. The organisers believe winning both champion and reserve champion has never been done before, so it was quite an honour.

“Being commercial breeders we had never really thought too much about participating in competitions,” Rob said.

“We also got a first and a third in the carcase section, and reserve champion for an individual carcase. It was a terrific result,” Rob said.

“We sold some steers to someone and they were entered in the 2015 Beef Spectacular, and they placed second. We started to think that maybe we should have a go ourselves, so we entered the 2016 competition.”

Rob and Kelly operate a breeding herd of 220 Angus / Santa Gertrudis cross cows, which they join to Simmental bulls. Rob said the Simmental bulls are perfect for adding the final touches to their cows.

The Beef Spectacular Feedback Trial is run at the Jindalee Feedlot, owned and operated by Tey’s Australia. Rob said they entered two pens of five steers which were fed for just over 100 days.

“We find Simmentals add that bit of extra weight and muscle. It is a good cross that is working really well for us,” Robs said.

“Points were awarded for the feedlot part, for things like best weight gain and feed conversion. The carcases were then evaluated and the points are combined to give an overall winner,” Rob said.

“We’ve been selling a few of our crossbred bulls privately, and since we’ve won these carcase competitions we’ve been receiving a lot on interest.

“We were stoked to win champion and reserve champion. We also placed third with a steer in the carcase section.

“We’ve always had the intention to breed bulls, and we’ve been fortunate to have some good, repeat buyers. As we continue to improve our herd, we hope to sell more bulls as there seems to be the demand for quality crossbred bulls in our area.”

“We then entered similar steers in the Paddock to Palate

RESTOCKING

FTER several consecutive dry seasons in areas such as Central Queensland, many producers were forced to destock as a way to ensure the survivability of their business.

and now that it has the country is bouncing back a lot quicker.”

Now however, with a remarkable wet winter behind many, producers like Ben Simpson are taking the opportunity to restock with new genetics.

Mr Simpson purchased five Simmental sires to average $6800 at the Roma Simmental and Simbrah Sale this year. He said buying quality bulls was a way forward for his family’s business.

Mr Simpson is from Thistlebank Grazing Company, located 100km north of Aramac in Queensland. He was one of many commercial producers bidding fiercely at this year’s Simmental sales, driven by the need to rebuild herd numbers. He said his family was initially forced to reduce their breeding herd because of drought. “At the start of the year we were down to about 550 cows. Usually we would run 1000 or more. We were getting ready to sell some maiden heifers, and then we were very fortunate to receive some early rain,” Mr Simpson said. “We were lucky that we did get some rain at the start of the year, but the majority has come in winter. At the end of winter we had received 22 inches for the year, which is more than double what we’ve had in the past two years. “The country has responded quite well. We tried to be semiconservative and feed pretty hard and hoped that it would rain,

Ben Simpson, from Aramac in “We certainly want quality Central Queensland, is looking bulls that are quiet. Having forward to seeing the right temperament is what Simmental genetics can important to us - it makes add to his herd. mustering easier, the fertility improves and cattle put on more weight. Quality definitely pays in the long run,” Mr Simpson said. “This is the first time we’ve used Simmental’s, and we decided to try the breed because we’re looking for more weight in our cattle and a bit more bone. We target the feeder market, so we’re always looking to get more weight in an animal earlier.” by Andrea Schulz

SIMMENTALS

provide market versatility F

OR Victorian beef producer Andrew McKenzie Scott, using Simmental genetics in his operation allows him to sell his weaners into a variety of markets. Mr Scott runs 80 breeders in the Gippsland district across two properties. His cows are predominantly Black Simmental and Angus, which he then joins to either Black Simmental or Angus sires. He sells his weaners either to the saleyards, to local butchers or direct to slaughter. Mr McKenzie Scott said the market versatility of his Simmental cross calves allows him to maximise his returns. “I started using Simmentals in my herd about five years ago. I’ve always liked them for their strong carcase yield, good frame and particularly for their temperament,” Mr McKenzie Scott said. “The Simmental bull I’ve been using was purchased from Peter and Vanessa Wenn, from Pinaroo Hills Simmental Stud. He is exceptionally quiet, and temperament is something I look for as I don’t want anything that will stir up. The temperament goes

through to the calves, and having the right temperament makes handling easier and reduces stress. “If our animals are less stressed, then we should see an increase in the quality of our meat, and that’s the aim of the game.” Mr McKenzie Scott has leased his Pinaroo Hills bull to some friends, and they too have achieved terrific results. “One friend who used my Simmental bull has had a massive return this year. One steer in particular dressed 250kg at just nine months of age. He was sold off pasture, and didn’t receive any grain. This Simmental bull is putting weight into all his calves, and that’s certainly an advantage for us as producers,” Mr McKenzie Scott said. by Andrea Schulz

UICK growing, well structured cattle is what cattle producer Scott Carter, “Gerelgambeth”, Illabo, looks to produce.

After a break from stock production, the Carters decided to restart their cattle venture again and purchased a Simmental bull from Wormbete Simmentals, Illabo, stud three years ago. The Carters purchased the bull to join with their Angus cows to make first cross calves. Mr Carter said he’d seen the Simmental and Angus cross before, and wanted to produce them as it resulted in a quick growing, sturdy calf. Basically, the Carters try to sell their calves off as quickly as possible, usually through the local sale yards. The first cross calves are sold straight off their mums, usually at about 10 to 12 months of age, or, when they reach between 340 to 380kg. Mr Carter said they’d join their first group of cows in August to have calves on the ground by May. The calves are usually sold in February. Usually, if the season permits, Mr Carter said the cattle would just run on pasture although they’re finished on grain.

COWS COME FIRST for 18 year old breeder C

OWS come first in Audrey Rose Torrielli’s life. But not just any cows, Audrey is an avid follower of the Simmental breed. The 18 year old from Conondale on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast left school after Year 10 so she could raise enough money to purchase her first cow. She works on a dairy farm at Kenilworth so she can buy cattle for her Simmental stud, Hidden Valley, which was established in 2012, and today she has 20 registered cattle in her stud. When other teenagers her age were saving for their first car, Audrey was buying a cattle truck for her beloved Simmentals. She purchased a 9 tonne Isuzu dual cab to transport her cattle to shows around the near north coast of Queensland and the Gold Coast. A lot of people have supported Audrey Rose’s passion for Simmental cattle, but none more so than Trinity Vale Simmental stud principals, Barb Evans and Trevor Andersen.

Audrey Rose Torrielli of Conondale has become a great ambassador for Simmentals, hopping on the backs of her cattle at shows to display the wonderful temperament of the breed

Audrey’s parents, Kylie and Adam Torrielli, run a commercial Brahman herd on the family’s 80 hectare property at Conondale, however Audrey’s love of the Simmental breed began when family friends, Barb and Trevor, asked her to help them show cattle around the local show circuit. “I started showing cattle for Barb and Trevor when I was still at primary school, and I fell in love with one of their baby calves,” Audrey said. “They loaned me three head to show and I took them to the Maleny, Woodford, Esk, and Nambour shows, and had my first major success in 2014 when their heifer, Trinity Vale Her Majesty, won Grand Champion European Female at the Esk Show,” she said.

taken with them, so we decided to set up donation tins to raise money for Queensland farmers’ kids affected by drought,” Audrey said. Over the last two years at the Gold Coast show alone, Audrey and her family have raised $2000 to help country kids in drought affected areas of the state. “Other groups invite us to their fete or event and we use it as an opportunity to promote the Simmental breed, as well as raise funds for different charities,” Audrey said. Audrey has become a great ambassador for the breed, and this year at the Kenilworth Show in September, she put the local policeman on the back of one of Barb and Trevor’s bulls which made the local news. by Linda Mantova

“That heifer then went on to win Supreme Exhibit of the Show at the Gold Coast, Pine Rivers and Mt Gravatt shows that same year.” Audrey has since purchased Her Majesty from Barb and Trevor, who also gave Audrey another stud heifer as a 16th birthday gift. She now takes her stud cattle to various shows and events around south east Queensland to raise awareness of the temperament of the Simmental breed. “I usually lay down on the rump of the bulls, or lie in amongst my cattle, to display to people how quiet Simmentals are,” Audrey said. That has become her trade mark now at many shows, and she has used that to help raise funds for different charity groups. “When we were at the Gold Coast show a few years ago, people wanted to know how much to pat a cow, or have their photos

year for chelsea I

T’S BEEN a whirlwind year full of achievements for young Simmental breeder Chelsea Rayner, and her most recent accomplishment was competing in the 2016 national finals for the stud junior judges competition. Chelsea won the Tasmanian competition in 2015, and then had the opportunity to compete in the 2016 national finals which were held at Launceston. She placed fourth overall and said it was an honour to compete at that level in front of a home crowd. Prior to the national finals, Chelsea also attended the Shorthorn Youth Expo with her sister who has started a Shorthorn stud. At the expo she was named the recipient of the Elders Stud Stock Award, and as part of her prize will have the opportunity to undertake work experience with the Elders stud stock team. “At this stage I’ll be attending the 2017 Sydney Royal Easter Show with the Elders stud stock team, and hopefully I can go to the National Shorthorn Show and Sale held in Dubbo,” Chelsea said. “It should be a great experience; I’m really looking forward to it.” Chelsea was named the grand champion junior judge at the Shorthorn Youth Expo, and she also won the open parader award at the Melbourne Show this year. “I was invited to the 2016 Melbourne Show to lead cattle, and I was fortunate to be judged the winner of the open parader

competition,” Chelsea said. “There are two categories, for junior and open competitors, and the competition is judged by Simmental Australia throughout Chelsea Rayner and Damelee the judging of the Glow owned by Damian Hingston Simmental classes. and Haylee Bennett ”Chelsea has been showing cattle for the past seven years, and four years ago she registered her Kidman Downs Simmental Stud. Her plan is to continue to increase her breeder numbers and improve the quality within in her herd. “At the moment I have about 10 females, with a few progeny on the ground. Because my numbers are low, I AI all my females which gives me the option to really choose the genetics I want,” Chelsea said. “When I first started my stud, I purchased some females that were of medium quality but that’s given me a great challenge and it’s given me the opportunity to try and breed better cattle,” Chelsea said. by Andrea Schulz

JONATHAN’S

heartfelt lead at the Sydney Easter Royal A

PACKED ampitheatre at Sydney Royal watched in awe as two charitable men bid their way to $22,000 for a single steer but the crowd cheered after learning of the story behind the steer’s young leader. The steer was being auctioned for the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and the boy with the lead in his hands, Murrumburrah High School student Jonathan Nicholls, had undergone lifesaving open-heart surgery just five months ago. “It was a privilege to be leading the steer today. It was hard work preparing him but it was fun,” Jonathan said. Jonathan presented to Westmead Private Hospital in 2015 for a pulmonary valve replacement after it became apparent things weren’t as they should be. “I was feeling sleepy all the time because I didn’t have enough oxygen and I couldn’t run for as long as I should’ve been able to.” After a difficult 12-week recovery Jonathan is back at school and loving it. “The surgery made a huge difference – I can do everything I want to do now.” The Year 12 student hopes to join the cattle industry upon graduation. Jonathan and his Murrumburrah High classmates prepared the Wormbete Simmental steer which was purchased by Sydney man come Gundagai farmer Paul Ferry, “Abingdon Station”. Fellow classmate Keegan Manwaring was the 2015 recipient of the Victor Chang Science Award which recognised her academic excellence in her science subjects.

NICOLE

makes mark in showring S

INCE winning the national young paraders competition in 2015, Simmental breeder Nicole Muller has had the opportunity to travel all over South Australia, Victoria, and even Queensland to further her career with stud cattle. Nicole is from Mt Gambier in South Australia, and her family owns the Rellum Farms Simmental Stud. She said she started leading calves when she first learnt to walk, and has grown up wanting to do more with stud cattle. “As a kid I got to participate in things like the South Australian Heifer Expo, the Angus Roundup, and I’ve even been to Queensland a few times to do the Simmental junior camp,” Nicole said.

Nicole Muller won the 2015 national finals of the young paraders competition, and is one of the youngest people to represent South Australia.

“In 2014 I competed in the South Australian young paraders competition, where I won my class. I then had to go into the ring against the winners of the four other age groups, and I was judged as the champion parader.

“I then got to fly over to the Sydney Royal Easter Show in 2015, where I was lucky enough to win the national competition. It was a fantastic experience,” Nicole said. Since then, Nicole and her father and brother have been travelling around South Australia and Victoria breaking in and showing cattle for clients. “I’ve travelled to Queensland a few times to show cattle at the Ekka, and that’s been great to meet new people. Back at home I’ve also been teaching students from my local high school how to lead and work with cattle, which has been really good,” Nicole said.

“I was only just 18 at the time, which makes me one of the youngest people to win the South Australian competition. Normally it is one of the older competitors that head off to nationals.

“These days I’m fairly involved with the family stud. We get a say on what genetics we think we should use, and what animals we want to show. I definitely want to stay in this industry, as I really do enjoy it.” by Andrea Schulz

“I’ve shown cattle at Adelaide and Melbourne and that has been a great opportunity to learn new skills. Over the years I’ve worked for different people and that has helped me to increase my knowledge of this industry.

RUBY’S

love of cattle began at birth

R

UBY Canning’s love of cattle began when she was born and by age three she had a Simmental stud established in her name. The Victorian teenager grew up on her family’s 364 hectare property, “Maverick”, at Inverleigh, and Mavstar Simmental stud was established for her by her grandparents, Peter and Agnes Schembri, when she was just a toddler. Fast forward 14 years, and today Ruby is a force to be reckoned with in the stud cattle world. Ruby was named the 2016 Australasian Champion Junior Handler at the Launceston show in early October, and is thrilled with her new title. “It was my first time ever competing in a national competition and to win it as one of the youngest competitors is so exciting,” she said. “I was up against representatives from every state in Australia as well as New Zealand.” Ruby has been competing in junior paraders’ competitions since she was eight years old, and started junior judging at the same age. She won the Victorian Champion Junior Handler at last year’s Melbourne Royal Show, and this year she was given the honour of judging at the Bathurst Show. “I co-judged the school paraders’ competition with my mum, as well as the junior judging which had 80 competitors,” Ruby said. “I also judged a few breeds at the show, including the Murray Greys,” she said. Ruby also has a thriving photography business, which has seen her appointed the official photographer for both the Melbourne and Adelaide Shows for the last two years.

SIMMENTAL SUMMER 2016

“I started taking a few photos around the farm, and people told me I had a real eye for animal photography,” she said. She started her own business, Mavstar Photography, in 2012, and specialises in livestock, show ring and rural photography. “I now take stud cattle photos at shows for individual clients and breed societies including Simmentals, Murray Grey and Red Angus,” Ruby said. Ruby now co-owns Mavstar Simmentals with her 12 year old brother, Jacob, and they currently have 30 breeding females in their stud. “We mostly use homebred sires from the family property, and do import semen also,” she said. “In 2014, I bred, owned and halterbroke Senior Champion Simmental cow at both the Melbourne and Geelong Royal Shows.” She has also been accepted into Lincoln University in New Zealand to study for her Bachelor of Agricultural Science next year, and just this week, Ruby was announced as the recipient of the Simon Gubbins Scholarship for 2017, awarded to young passionate people involved in the beef cattle industry who are studying at Lincoln.

Establishing his stud, Grangeburn Simmentals in 2013, on his family’s 730 hectare property, Brodhi has his sights set on raising the profile of the European beef breed. Starting out with one stud cow given to him by his parents, Faye and Damian, Brodhi quickly sold her and started his stud based on South Australian bloodline, Woonallee, and Wormbete bloodlines from New South Wales. Growing up on his family’s cattle and sheep properties in western Victoria, where they ran predominantly British Breeds, Brodhi, however, was attracted to the traits of the Simmental breed. “I was attracted to their milking ability, good growth rates and muscling, all the while retaining their softness,” he said. Brodhi established his stud aiming to produce moderate, meaty, stylish polled Simmental cattle.

who took part in five days of industry presentations, training workshops, a careers expo and two meat judging contests, during July in Wagga Wagga. “It is a very prestigious event and it’s the first time I’ve entered,” he said.

Brodhi Carracher, Grangeburn Simmentals, after he purchased the “I also participated in $9000 top priced heifer, Woonallee the South Australian Regal K13, at the Woonallee stud sale Junior Heifer Expo this in February 2015. year, exhibiting a black Simmental from Stuart Moeck’s Valley Creek Simmentals.”

“I have about 75 stud females, and three stud bulls at the moment,” he said.

Brodhi recently purchased the entire Juraley Simmental herd, in Yarram, Victoria, comprising 60 registered females, and two bulls, in a private sale in August.

“Last year I started selling bulls, and next January I will be taking part in my first field day, as part of Hamilton Beef Week.

He has big plans for his new herd of quality Juraley genetics.

“I will have some of my young Simmental bulls on display as well as some 20 month old bulls, plus a few females, and all will be for sale.” Currently in his third year of studying Veterinary Science at the Adelaide University, Brodhi tasted success recently at the 2016 Australian Intercollegiate Meat Judging Association/MLA Intercollegiate Meat Judging Competition. In the Eating Quality Evaluation, Brodhi was named the runner-up in the individual placings, sponsored by Teys Brothers, and his Adelaide University team were named the Champion Eating Quality Evaluation Team at the event. Enjoying the practical side of his vet course, that undoubtedly helped Brodhi achieve such high marks in the Beef and Lamb judging at the competition.

“I’m planning to start an extensive AI program early to mid next year,” Brodhi said. “I also trade in about 40 Hereford/Simmental cross bred steers on my family’s farm,” he said. Brodhi said he really got his start in agriculture when his grandfather, Barry Dicker, gave him five Merino ewes when he was just nine years old. He now also operates Bruk Bruk East Friesian and Border Leicester stud, with his cousin, Rick Foster, at “Haven Park”, at Wando Vale, Victoria. “We currently run 250 stud ewes, and sell 100 rams each year,” he said. “Rick is also a strong user of Simmental genetics in his commercial Hereford cross herd.”

SALESIAN COLLEGE

invests in Simmentals I

T was only several years ago that the number of students studying agriculture at Salesian College in Victoria totalled five. These days it’s a different story though, with over 400 students willingly choosing to study a variety of agricultural subjects. Teacher Matt Fitzgerald believes there were a number of things that brought about the positive change, including an upgrade to the facilities, a cattle program, and more encouragement and support for students to choose agriculture. “Agriculture is now offered as an elective subject from year seven. In year nine, all students study a subject called ‘discover agriculture’, and then in year 10 students can choose agricultural science,” Mr Fitzgerald said. “In the senior grades, students can study senior vet agriculture which is a very practical subject. We have about 400 students studying agriculture, which makes it one in three.” Salesian College have 1000 acres directly next to the school where they grow hay, run cattle and teach agriculture. “Salesian College originally showed dairy cattle, and did very well at it over a long period of time. When student numbers and interest dropped, the show team folded but last year we were lucky enough to show some beef cattle,” Mr Fitzgerald said.

Salesian College students

“We got to know a few Simmental breeders, and they were more than willing to help us show cattle and impart their knowledge. The college made the decision to go back into cattle, but we wanted to choose a breed that would benefit our students and the industry. “We purchased two Simmental heifers, two recipient cows and two embryos. We’ve undertaken an AI program and our aim is to breed bulls that we could sell. We’ve made a commitment to the breed, and it’s great that Simmental Australia is aware of what we’re trying to do. We want to be part of the association and do the breed proud for many years to come,” Mr Fitzgerald said. “It’s wonderful that we have the opportunity to show children a real life situation. Students learn to take care of an animal, prepare and then show it. I believe that has a really positive effect on students.

Casey Ryan

Simmental Australia held their

46th Annual General Meeting

in Launceston Tasmania on 21st May 2016

M

EMBERS TRAVELLING FROM Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland to take in the tours of the Tasmanian members prior to the AGM. Friday saw the travellers inspect cattle at Nathan and Leah Skirving’s East Sassafras property then on to Scott Frankcombe’s cows and calves in the shadow of Mount Roland then on to see the herds of Michael Frankcombe from Sheffield with guest Haylee Bennett from Gawler. Tasmania had seen some dry times recently with their water supply in the Launceston region nearly dry then 6 inches of rain had fallen in the week prior to our arrival leaving a lovely green tinge to the countryside. The Federal Board met on the Saturday with the 46th AGM held at the Hotel Grand Chancellor on the Saturday night. The new executive is President: Peter Wenn (Vic), Treasurer: Stuart Moeck (NSW), Senior Vice President: Garry Gillett (Vic), Junior Vice President: Scott York (Qld). Board members in attendance were from WA – Audrey Weightman, SA – Tom Baker, NSW - John Hopkins, TAS – Aleasha Goss (outgoing) and Michael Frankcombe (incoming). Outgoing board member Aleasha Goss had spent two years on the board and welcomed Michael Frankcombe back to the board to take Aleasha’s place representing Tasmania. A special presentation was given to Darryl Barker for his service to the Simmentals in Tasmania. Charles Cowcher from WA introduced Darryl with a few yarns and Darryl continued.

Executive Officer, Felicity Reeves, Charles Cowcher WA, Darrel Barker TAS, Peter Wenn President.

In his President’s report, Peter Wenn commented what a fantastic time it is to be in the beef cattle business, in particular Simmentals. This past year has seen a continuing upward trend for prices of all grades of Simmental cattle in the sale yards and positive stud sale results, including record breaking sales. It shows that Simmentals are widely used and accepted across the country and an important part of the Australian Beef Industry.

Scott Frankcombe with his Roland Black Simmental herd

With extraordinary demand from lot feeders and commercial processors, the situation has seen greater requests for live exports through the Associations Export Market Development Program. Demand for performance figures is increasing, in particular from domestic and overseas markets. The Simmental Breedplan figures were updated recently by the 6.2 version of Breedplan analysis. This is a large step forward and will ensure that the Simmental breed has the most accurate group Breedplan data. Some members may have seen some variances to individual EBV’s, but the rankings for individual animals within the breed, have remained largely unchanged. The ASBA will be working alongside SBTS and ABRI to hold educational seminars/webinars specifically targeted at the Simmental breeders, in the future.

CHOOSING

the right heifer bull M

OST people have used EBVs in the past to help them select bulls for their heifers; however Southern Beef Technology Services (SBTS) now recommends producers should also consider selection indexes. Selection indexes rank animals on profit (dollars per cow mated), within a specific production to market scenario. They have been designed to balance genetic improvement across traits and to help producers avoid losing out on one trait for another. Desirable traits often correlate with others, so when pressure is placed on one trait it is at the risk of pushing another trait in the opposite direction. When selecting bulls using selection indexes, producers need to consider the selection index of most relevance to their operation and breeding objectives. Producers also need to consider fertility and birth weights. Animals with the same selection index value can have very different individual EBVs.

and calving ease when it comes to selecting heifer bulls, as most producers do.

Producers need to decide what other EBVs are of importance, and take into consideration factors such as polled or horned. Ensure that bulls are both structurally and functionally sound.

“I’ve been using EBVs to select bulls for a number of years now. Growth and final weights can sometimes be affected, but selection indexes have the potential to improve that.”

Generally when selecting a heifer bull, low birth weight, shorter gestation length and a positive calving ease are more favourable. Once a producer has evaluated their desirable EBVs, selection indexes should then be used to rank bulls on their economic value.

By combing EBVs and selection indexes, producers should be able to select bulls that not only reduce the risk of calving problems in heifer, but should also improve other economically important traits within the herd.

Simmental breeder Michael Frankcombe from Slopes Simmentals in Tasmania says he considers EBVs such as low calving weights

NATIONAL SHOW

and Sale on the calendar for 2017 I

N 2017 Simmental members have a fantastic new opportunity to market their elite stud animals when the Simmental and Red Angus Societies will combine to hold their respective National Sales on 19th to 21st June in 2017 at Dubbo Showground. Recently, a number of Red Angus members and vendors of the Red Angus National Show and Sale lobbied their Council requesting that changes be made and perhaps the most important change required was to boost the Sale with greater numbers and inject some energy and atmosphere to the day. Given that some commercial supporters of the sale use both Simmental and Red Angus in their breeding programs, having Simmental join the day was a positive and logical step. The Simmental and Red Angus Societies are very similar in size, resources, membership numbers and structure.

The benefits to both societies are numerous, not only in terms of direct benefits by way of sharing costs of the venue, cataloguing and promotion.

Willandra Simmental and Red Angus herd

But more importantly it sends a very positive message that perhaps for the first time, we have two breeds prepared to work together to progress the industry.

This will also be an excellent opportunity for members with smaller herds to market their stud animals. For further details contact ASBA on 02 6773 2714 or RA on 02 6773 3022.

SCANNING heifers allows genetic gain

HERE are several advantages when it comes to scanning heifers, and most notably is the ability to fast track genetic gain within a herd. Often bulls are scanned for fat measurements, eye muscle area, and intramuscular fat percentage, but in reality those bulls being scanned are the best of the best from the male portion of calves. Many will argue that heifers represent a herd better and offer unbiased data, as they are all available at the time of scanning where as the male portion has already been drafted to bulls and steers. Another reason to scan females is that under similar nutritional conditions, heifers carry more fat than bulls at the same age. Animals that are more conditioned at the time of scanning will exhibit greater variation in marbling and rib and rump fat depth than animals which are lean. This in turns provides a more accurate indication of data. Scanning heifers generally provides a greater variation in all of the scan traits, and this can be extremely useful when calculating carcase EBVs. From a stud perspective, scanning heifers is one way to access more precise data quickly and efficiently.

Tom Baker, from the Woonallee Simmental Stud based near Furner in South Australia, said scanning both heifers and males allows him to analysis genetics and data a lot earlier in his operation.

File photo of heifer scanning

“We import genetics regularly from overseas, and scanning our heifers and bulls is the best way to analyse the performance of those genetics. Scanning helps us to fast track the genetic gain within our herd,” Mr Baker said. “We’ve been scanning our heifers for about 15 years. It is becoming a more common practise, and as people realise the advantages, I think it will definitely take off even further.”

IMPROVING

fertility within a herd F

OR a beef producer, one way to assess the profitability of a business is the reproductive performance of a herd. Most of the time, the emphasis is placed on the female as it is her job to be joined as early as possible, give birth to a healthy calf and raise it until weaning. The majority of producers cull females who do not achieve this, and culling has always been the most common way of managing female fertility. However, as most people keep a number of replacement heifers each year, it is equally important to consider the bull that is being used to maintain fertility. Scott York, from the Billa Park Simmental Stud located at Dulacca in Queensland, understands the need for prioritising fertility in a breeder herd. “We operate as a bull-breeding enterprise for both seed stock and commercial producers, alongside a large commercial herd on the family-farm, so we know that fertility has a significant impact on the profitability of any beef breeding business, ”Mr York said. “The next bull you purchase is a key factor that will impact on the reproductive performance of your breeder herd, and can have an impact on your herd for the next 10-20 years. “To ensure progress is made in fertility, we believe in selecting bulls that have a balanced package of all traits. There is no use having calves on the ground if they are unmarketable.” EBVs can sometimes help producers select the right bull to improve fertility within a herd. Mr York said while they use EBVs as a tool when purchasing new animals, their reliance on the information they provide is limited. “We much prefer to look at raw data and compare contemporaries. We look up and follow the animal’s parents and see what they

50

SIMMENTAL SUMMER 2016

have done. When buying bulls we look at scrotal measurement and compare them to their group,” Mr York said. “As for AI sires with around 100 progeny, we will take real notice of the EBVs as there is enough progeny out there to get a real guide to what they are doing. We are always looking to improve our genetics and try and select animals that are above average for both their fertility traits, as well as their other traits. “As soon as you start focusing on one or two traits you will be forgoing other necessary traits. For example, there is no use getting a cow to calve every 350 days if you have to bucket rear the calf because she has no milk.” Mr York said other ways fertility can be managed include nutrition, structure and disease management. “We feel that these three factors are ninety percent of the challenge of getting the calf on the ground. Without having these things right, you can have the highest number of animals in your paddock but still no calves,” Mr York said. “Within our Simmental herd, it’s been extremely pleasing and rewarding to observe the breed’s desirable traits at play, most notably their superior maternal traits such as milk and mothering ability. “This is fortified by the high fertility the breed is also renowned for- females which reach puberty early and have great longevity, and bulls with large scrotal size, high libido and the ability to handle high mating loads. “Not only are we reaping the benefits of this fertility, but so too are the hundreds of commercial breeders in Northern Australia using Simmentals in their crossbreeding programs,” Mr York said. by Andrea Schulz

The Simmental Team in the 2016 Sydney Royal Easter Show Purebred Steer and Carcase Stan Hill Trophy Competition placed equal third with a total carcase point score of 253.0. A great achievement for the entries exhibited by Macarthur Anglican School (owners Mr A and Mrs M Anderson), Wellington High School and GL and LR Martin (owners GL and LR Martin).

A Simmental/Limousin cross calf won his class in the Carcase section of the 2016 Brisbane Royal. “Yuranga Boof” bred by Trevyn and Kelly Weier, Bal~Rowe, Mt Molar, Clifton Qld, was out of a purebred Simmental cow by a purebred black Limousin bull. He placed 4th out of 35 on the hoof and made $6.80 per kilo, then won his class on the carcase. He then went onto win Reserve Champion Middleweight Steer.

The Simmental team placed third in the 2016 Royal Melbourne Show, Borthwick Trophy Beef Carcase Competition, after placing EQUAL FIRST on the hoof, on 332.64 points. The team consisted of Finley High School, (SB), bred by Mr P Webb. Sire: TNT Tanker, Dam: WEBPH872; Team H - Mt Ararat Simmentals, (SI), Sire: Mt Ararat Hunter, Dam: Mt Ararat Arabella J111; and Webb Black Simmentals, (SB), Sire: TNT Tanker, Dam: WEB H920.

Rellum Farms Lubrication was one of the three steers in the Thomas Foods trophy at Royal Adelaide Show, Simmentals placed third in the group of three. This along with the third place at Royal Melbourne Show in the Borthwick Trophy shows the consistency and depth of the carcases traits of the Simmental breed. Rellum Farms Lubrication was the highest pointed Simmental steer at the Adelaide event with 84.84 points.
