Welcome to the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers.

Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers was established in 1949 to stimulate the economy after the war. Some 71 years later, this iconic national event will again step up to the task of celebrating community spirit, welcoming visitors to the city and flying the flag for our Region.

There is so much to see and do across the Toowoomba region, especially in our feature floral-filled parks. I encourage everyone to take a road trip around the region, buy a #trEAT or two and help local businesses get back on their feet. Toowoomba Region is primed and ready to showcase its natural beauty.

Nothing can stop the power of the flower, and I encourage everyone to play in the petals this spring. In September there is simply no better place to be. I welcome you to our beautiful region – we hope you enjoy everything there is on offer.

The Chronicle Garden competition has been reimagined this year to align with government regulations and to ensure the safety of our gardeners, community and visitors; we welcome The Chronicle Garden for Good – Cultivating kindness in our community.

This year’s program has been adapted to continue the proud history of this much loved 71-year-old community tradition.

Ten winning gardens have been selected this year and although visitors won’t be able to physically tour the gardens, we will be able to take a COVID-19 safe virtual tour on the new Garden for Good website.

The added bonus of this year’s program is enabling our community to continue to do their bit for charities and community groups by donating online via the Garden for Good website.

The arrival of spring is welcome because there’s no doubt that after the difficult time we’ve endured in the past six months, we can all do with having our spirits lifted. That’s why I am thrilled that Carnival is continuing this year.

Nothing makes this community come alive more than the Carnival of Flowers. It’s a tradition that we should all be very proud of and it helps define our Toowoomba identity. It brings together people from all walks of life and many different organisations with the common goal of creating magic for everyone to enjoy.

This year, more than ever, I urge everyone to get involved in the Carnival events. It’s time to show our resilience and our community spirit in the face of adversity. It’s a time to show that there’s nothing we can’t overcome by harnessing the collective resolve of this community.

T he Concept

WHY THIS YEAR IS GARDEN FOR GOOD Welcome to The Chronicle Garden for Good, a celebration of Toowoomba’s dazzling gardens and generous community spirit! Together, we’re shining a light on talented gardeners, while raising funds for charity along the way.

t’s been a strange year. COVID-19 has thrown a spanner in the works for many businesses and events, to say the least – including The Chronicle Garden Competition and Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers.

Between kindness being needed now more than ever and government pandemic regulations dictating restricted visiting to gardens, The Chronicle event organisers put their thinking caps on and came up with Garden for Good.

A digital showcase of some of Toowoomba’s unique and vibrant gardens, the campaign aims to be a celebration of exceptional gardening and kindness – allowing the public to participate by donating funds to the featured gardener’s charity of choice (for more information on these charities, see page 64-65).

It may be different to what The Chronicle has run in the past, but in response to the current pandemic, we have a duty of care to visitors and gardeners and therefore have decided to keep things digital this year so the gardens can still be enjoyed.

Ultimately, Garden for Good is about bringing the community together and sharing kindness in these challenging times.

The 10 showcased gardens were chosen for their support of generosity, sustainability, and other forms of “good” – with the help of industry expert, horticultural and sustainability writer, speaker and educator, Claire Bickle.

You can discover more on how each individual gardener and how their garden spreads good in the community by reading their stories from page 11.

GARDENING IS Gardening for good doesn’t just include our top 10 gardeners supporting charities; it encompasses so much more, including health benefits. hen Garden for Good judge Claire Bickle stepped into the gardens this year, she had her eyes open for the ‘good’ in gardening – from sustainability to encouraging good

mental health.

“The Chronicle Garden Competition was created back in 1949, for the very reason that we know come through the Depression, the second World War; and it was to really lift the spirits of the community, create that comradery, boost the economy, just basically to feel good about everything that had happened in the world,”

Claire said.

“So the Garden for Good aspect for this year is that we’re in a similar situation.

“We’re not at war, but we’re at war with COVID-19 and people feel distressed by it; a lot of people have lost jobs. There’s lots of reasons why we need to, once again, rally together.

“So, I have chosen the 10 [top gardens] with the underlying ‘Garden for Good’ ethos.”

In several gardens, Claire praised how they fostered a feeling of community and wellbeing.

“Gowrie State School’s ethos is that gardens bring calm and joy, especially during COVID,” she said.

“Sheryl Lothian believes a garden is to share with family and friends and other gardeners; while the curb-

side appeal of Sandra Norris’s garden creates a real connection to the community.”

“I think gardening plays such a huge role in the community,” Claire added.

“When you look at having school gardens, when you have a look at literally community gardens, I think about people beautifying their front gardens, that creates that connection to your neighbourhood.

“I think really it comes back to how it benefits mental health. It is also proven statistically people feel safer in a green environment within cities, so there are lots of

The Queensland Government agrees there are many positive effects from gardening.

They recommend the pastime as a way to develop and maintain motor skills, endurance and strength, and general physical fitness.

Both adults and children alike can benefit from this,

as well as the benefits of fresh outdoor air, genuine sunshine and satisfaction from growing your own flowers or trees or food.

When it comes to the mental health perks gardening holds, several of the Garden for Good entrants are firm supporters.

“Mercy Green Care Garden strives to nurture the mental health of many refugees from war-torn and disadvantaged backgrounds now living in Toowoomba,” Claire said.

“It’s just a wonderful safe nurturing space that creates a sense of belonging.”

Claire herself believes in the importance of gardening and being in nature to our wellbeing.

“We inherently have a need to commune with nature,” she said.

“We might not realise that, but I can speak for the horticultural industry – and the gardening industry will have found – we had a massive surge of uptake of gardening as an activity while people were working from home, home schooling, still in lockdown, whatever the case may be across the country.

“And it does seem just seeing green has a calming effect. It lowers blood pressure. It reduces anxiety. Even the dirt. There is a particular beneficial bacteria.

“So it’s like a natural antidepressant to garden, you know?

“I think people have found that comforting while things are so uncertain and you’ve got no control on what’s going on around you, you can have a bit of control in your backyard or your balcony, your acreage, whatever the case may be.”

GARDENS For more than 70 years, The Chronicle has championed outstanding gardening through The Chronicle Garden Competition. The competition was launched in 1948. Times were tough and the paper decided that a community focus on the city’s gorgeous gardens would give everyone a lift.

Fast forward to 2020 and challenging times are back, which is why we think it’s time to plant some seeds of positivity. The annual event has been reimagined as a joyful celebration that recognises green-thumbed talent while raising funds for those doing it tough. Our gardeners have shared their creations with us for all these years – now it’s time to pay that kindness forward!

Oasis on the Downs

Clever design and thoughtful repurposing have made this bountiful country garden one of Toowoomba’s most successful. oth retired and in their late 60s, Noela and Paul were previously dairy farmers at Acland. After selling their farm, Paul then worked at the New Acland mine, before they moved to Haden, north of Toowoomba.

Like many successful gardeners, Paul and Noela had no grand design for their magnificent garden. They just made a start and things gradually came together.

“Paul has an eye for design and it all evolved over time as we worked our way around,” Noela explains.

The couple has often made use of their surroundings in innovative ways.

“We made great use of all the rocks on our property and had access to plenty of topsoil out of the paddocks, so garden beds could be built up, improving drainage,”

Noela says.

“We also used old cattle troughs and tree stumps pulled out of paddocks - we turned them upside down like big vases.

“I always stick to things I know can survive both the heat and the cold. But they always give me flowers around carnival time.”

The garden was constructed with different ‘rooms’ and the whole garden can’t be seen from any one spot.

Paul was instrumental in the construction, but Noela

does the bulk of maintenance these days.

“Paul’s very handy at building and structure, but he’s not a fan of weeding. He doesn’t see them,” Noela laughs. “I love pottering outside in the sunshine, so it’s no hassle at all.

“It’s so therapeutic - the joy of seeing a fruit or flower grow. I love it.”

First entering The Chronicle Garden Competition in 2011, they won the novice section and since then there have been plenty of category wins as well as four

Country Grand Champion prizes in a row.

This year has seen them shelve plans for a trip to Canada and spend more time in the garden, which has served them well the past few months.

“We’re quite isolated here, some 50km from Toowoomba. We can’t run to the shops every couple of days,” Noela explains. “We grow broccoli, cauliflower, cabbages, turnips and sugar snap peas. There’s always something available to eat.”

CHARMAINE & PETER WILLIAMSON

A meeting of minds

Art and science merge in this intriguing garden from a couple who share a passion for beauty, artistry and sustainability harmaine Williamson was born in what was then Rangoon, Burma, and is an artist who works with acrylics and sculpture. Peter has a PhD in microbiology and was recently elected as a fellow of the International Society for Plant Pathology. They have spent 25 years creating their unique Mount Lofty garden.

When Old Mr Moss, the creator of Toowoomba’s BMS Hardware and The Original Leadlight Company, built his beautiful art deco house Bethuel 100 years ago,

you can be sure he never envisaged future occupants installing solar-powered hydroponic systems, automated irrigation, and energy efficient water recycling for the garden.

But no doubt he would have approved of the garden Charmaine and Peter Williamson have created. At every turn, there is an example of science meeting art in perfect unison; creating a beautiful and artistic, yet pragmatic, and even quirky, garden.

“I’ve always been creative,” says Charmaine, “and in the garden I like to experiment with fragrance, colour and texture. Peter’s passion revolves around creating

energy and water efficiency.

“When I met Peter, it sped us on this path,” she adds.

For chief gardener Charmaine, Bethuel has become a full-time job and a labour of love.

“I’m constantly creating art in the garden, such as mosaics and potted plant displays,” she explains. “I’m also a plant collector and I have a hobby business Charm’s Dream Garden - where I pot up and sell the excess flowers that we grow.”

Ongoing maintenance of the garden is the easiest job, thanks to Peter’s ingenuity.

“The hanging baskets are automatically irrigated,” explains Charmaine. “Peter has also created a system to recycle grey water, and we recycle around 100 litres of water a day.

“Add a little worm juice and it’s like liquid gold,” she laughs.

The couple has long embraced the now-fashionable concept of sustainability. The tool shed and shade house

were built by Peter and Charmaine using recycled materials. A recent chicken coop has enabled an even more self-sustaining lifestyle.

Their garden is also shaped by their heritage. There are Western Australian natives out front to reflect Peter’s birthplace, and a host of tropical fruits and flowers from Burma, where Charmaine was born.

The overall result is an eclectic mix of ornamental, tropical and hardy plants, with a secret garden in the middle and fruit trees at the back.

In past years, up to 50,000 visitors from around the world have visited the Stephsons’ garden and the couple goes above and beyond to create a lively and inviting atmosphere.

“I play CDs so people can waddle around the garden to the beat of the music,” says Les. “Fae used to be a

jazz violinist in orchestras so we play some of that. My friend has given me some great Hawaiian music to play, too.”

Fae adds: “We love meeting new people and sharing our garden with them. I have many wonderful memories of the festival.”

T he beauty of street appeal From TV stars to expert gardeners, locals and international visitors, Bob and Val Ford’s colourful and pristine garden has a legion of loyal fans.

al and Bob Ford are both 77 and retired. Bob, a former accountant, and Val, previously a tennis coach, say maintaining their award-winning Toowoomba garden keeps them young and fit.

Some 31 years ago, Rod Hultgren persuaded Bob and Val Ford to enter what was then The Chronicle Garden Competition. Rod was a champion grower and an expert for the ABC, so he knew a thing or two about gardens.

In the 31 years since then, there has only been one year in which Bob and Val didn’t collect a prize.

There must have been some absolutely stunning gardens that year.

“We took out a second place in our first year,” recalls Bob. “We’ve won 14 front gardens in a row, 15 floral front gardens and twice been the Grand Champions.”

There are also 10 Annuals and Bulbs trophies at the home they built themselves in 1966. Although back then, the garden wasn’t really a focus.

“We were too busy with sport and children to really transform the garden for the first 20 years we were here,” explains Bob. Gradually, their beautiful garden took shape. Passersby would stop and admire it.

“We were on the way to [Toowoomba landmark] Picnic Point,” says Bob. “Tour buses would pull up outside. People would turn up and I’d let them walk through.”

Val describes their garden as free flowing, with lots of different little pockets. A Japanese area includes Japanese conifers, maples, and flowering peach.

The front garden is really the stunning centrepiece, though. In spring, it bursts into colourful life. Pansies, petunias, snapdragons, primulas and lawns described as ‘the best ever’ by Queensland gardening legend Ross McKinnon.

“Jenny Woodward from the ABC has been here three times,” says Val. “And stood in the middle of the front garden each time, to do the weather.”

The couple takes their inspiration from many sources, but to a certain extent, nature decides what the garden does next.

“The garden is always changing,” says Val. “It keeps things interesting.”

As for what’s next though …

“I’ve run out of ideas,” laughs Bob. “I’ve got every

plant going!”

“There are over 1000 seedlings in the garden,” he adds.

“Every time I go out I come back with a plant and then I think, ‘Where on earth am I going to put that?’.”

Is it an addiction, perhaps?

“Yes!” Val chips in, laughing. “He’s obsessed with it!”

“I am a bit of a perfectionist,” Bob admits. “I like to do a good job, or not do it at all.”

Bob has no need to worry on that front – clearly the two of them have done an amazing job over the years.

Norwood Roses, beauty in buds For the young green-thumb behind one of Toowoomba’s prettiest plots, gardening has been a revelation.

“Four years ago, I knew nothing,” Caitlyn says. “Now, I’m obsessed with learning the names of every annual plant that there is. I mean it’s just ridiculous,” she laughs.

It all started with an historic corner shop in central Toowoomba. It had fallen into disrepair when Caitlyn bought it in 2016.

“My friends all told me to demolish it, but I wanted to prove people wrong,” she recalls. “I thought it could be beautiful.”

Sam had just moved into the area and started helping

garden.

“Gardening has changed my life,” says Caitlyn.

It’s a bold statement, but she can back it up.

“He just never left,” she laughs. “I wouldn’t have finished without his help, I’m very grateful for everything he’s done.”

The house, named Norwood Roses, is now fully restored and painted a beautiful pink. Like the house, the garden had been in disrepair, but that at least provided a blank canvas.

“There was no garden or grass, just a large, selfpollinating Chinese elm,” recalls Caitlyn. “The entire

“I spend more time outside than in now,” Caitlyn says. “It’s like the house is just one small part of the garden. I love creating beautiful spaces, so it’s my creative outlet.”

During COVID, the garden has truly become a refuge.

“I really think that the garden gives a sense of hope for the future. It allows you to see past the hard times and provide solace,” Caitlyn says.

“Working as a nurse, I’ve been able to take fresh flowers into my colleagues during the crisis.”

Caitlyn and Sam nominated Beyond Blue as their Garden for Good charity.

“Mental health is more important than ever at the moment,” Caitlyn says. “My heart goes out to anyone who is isolated.”

Homemade habitat Brimming with native Australian plants and flowers, this country garden provides a welcome sanctuary for people and wildlife alike.

ormer national park rangers from Cairns, Richard and Anne-Maree Lindeman moved to Highfields, north of Toowoomba, in 2017 with the goal of building a magnificent garden.

With more than 35 years’ employment as park rangers between them, it’s fair to say Richard and Anne-Maree understand Australia’s natural environment better than most.

“Our careers as park rangers and our love for garden design has manifested in our affinity with native plants and wildlife,” Richard says.

The couple moved to Toowoomba from Cairns three years ago, having often made the pilgrimage south for the Carnival of Flowers, prompting a long-held ambition to be part of the action.

“I was always keen to enter a garden worthy of being considered [in Garden for Good],” Richard reveals. “It’s been on my bucket list!”

The couple moved into a property sporting a garden that had “a lot of lawn and some very old camellias.”

“Our first job was to knock everything down and start with a blank canvas,” says Richard.

Fast forward three years, and the garden is now an impressive sanctuary comprising a series of “outdoor rooms”.

There are waterfalls and rock pools, a formal water feature, many seating areas, a fire pit and more. But it is the native plants, including grasses, tree ferns and orchids, even an ‘amoeba’ garden of melaleuca ‘claret

tops’ that make this garden unique.

“Our garden focuses on natives, with an aim to attract Australian wildlife. We’re proud of what we’ve built up from scratch,” he adds. “I’ve recorded over 50 species of birds in our garden. I get enormous joy from that.”

When reflecting on the three-year process of building up the garden from scratch, Richard recalls some particularly memorable moments.

“Rocks feature extensively throughout our garden and there were a good 12 months I was hunting on Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace for free rocks. Initially, everyone was happy to help out. By the 20th or 30th trip to get rocks … the enthusiasm wasn’t really there,” Richard jokes.

Most recently, Richard and Anne-Maree’s eldest daughter was due to marry in the garden.

“Our eldest daughter was planning to get married

here in September. Due to new COVID restrictions, it’s been postponed for the time being, but it will definitely happen in the future,” the proud father says.

The Lindemans’ passion for conservation is reflected in the charity they have nominated for Garden for Good - the Australian Wildlife Conservancy.

“The protection of our native unique wildlife and plants and their habitats has suffered in recent times from drought, bushfires, land development and a changing climate,” Richard explains. “We all need to do our bit to help out, even if it is a small contribution by providing habitat through our home gardens.”

Getting out of the classroom For a group of Toowoomba primary school students, digital distractions are no match for the hands-on appeal of gardening. elinda Hewson, 39, has been a Year 5 teacher at Gowrie State School for five years. She started the Environment Club early in her time at the school and has seen it thrive along with the school’s

flourishing gardens.

“The garden has been used such a lot this year during a very stressful time,” says Melinda Hewson. “It’s been great for the teachers’ wellbeing and it has created a real school spirit. The kids love to be in it and it’s appreciated by everybody.”

It’s amazing that in a digital age, gardening should be such a focus for an Australian primary school, but Melinda says she literally has children knocking on her door asking if they can get digging.

“There’s a rock garden near the front, where kids have been asked to paint rocks and then place them in the display,” Melinda says, “and every day the kids congregate to see what’s been added.”

“We have many parents on the staff and you’d want support if you were going through tough times.”

Which is exactly what the gardens have done for this spirited school in 2020.

“It’s sometimes good to take a step back and see what really matters,” says Melinda. “The gardens really helped with everybody’s wellbeing during a stressful time and it continues to do so.”

THE MULBERRY PROJECT

A helping hand

The Mulberry Project is more than a luscious vegetable patch. It’s a place where members of Toowoomba’s growing migrant community can reconnect with the foods they miss, gain valuable skills and share stories of their distant homelands.

ouise Noble never imagined herself as a market gardener. But as she sat under a mulberry tree in her backyard in 2016, speaking with local Congolese man, Shadrach Msabah, in their shared language of French, the seeds of an idea were sown and The Mulberry Project was born.

Gardens mean many things to many people. They can be places of respite; outlets for creativity; spaces to

grow fresh fruit and veggies; or foundations for learning and connection. The Mulberry Project is all of these, and more.

A social enterprise market garden, it provides training and food for disadvantaged communities. Founder Louise Noble, who has a background in architecture and urban design, says the project has so far helped 20 members into full-time employment.

“What brings us together is the joy of gardening and the love of sharing,” Louise says.

“The gardens also occupy a special place in the hearts of Toowoomba’s growing migrant community, offering people an opportunity to grow produce they miss from home and connect over their shared love of gardening and cooking.”

From okra to zucchini, leeks and warrigal greens, the plants in the garden are diverse, delicious and have a multitude of uses which Louise loves learning about every day.

starting the garden is the different ways in which the communities use and prepare the vegetables,” Louise shares. “You can use okra and zucchini leaves for cooking, and eat the flowers of an open-leafed Chinese cabbage that’s popular in Central Africa.

“It’s incredible to see how people from different parts of the world cook with produce.”

Cooking also provides an opportunity for the migrants – many of whom have come from war-torn countries – to connect with home.

“Food is universal. It’s a beautiful way to bring people together,” Louise explains. “You can’t be at war with

someone when you share food. It’s an act of generosity.

That’s when you really come to the table, and that’s the ethos we try to maintain.

“The Mulberry Project is a place of trust and love,” she adds.

Louise’s nominated charity, the Ag-Tastic education programs of the Royal Agricultural Society of Queensland [Toowoomba Showgrounds], has been crucial to the success of her garden over the years.

“They do tours for schools and agricultural education programs for different people in the community,” says Louise. “We want to help them continue their important

mission.”

While recent COVID restrictions have made running The Mulberry Project challenging, Louise is optimistic about the future.

“COVID has highlighted what’s really important.

We need to work together no matter what; we survive when we cooperate; and producing food is an essential service,” she says.

“If The Mulberry Project can continue to channel this, we’re only going to flourish.”

A garden for all ages

With five children and nine grandchildren, Janice Canning is just the woman to create the ultimate family garden.

anice and Paul Canning are in their 60s.

He’s a teacher, while she is currently on long service leave from her job in early childhood education. They have lived in their house in the Toowoomba suburb of Rangeville for 36 years.

If you were a betting person, you’d have put money on Janice Canning doing well in the Family section of The Chronicle Garden Competition last year.

She won the section, in what was her debut year. But then, as an early childhood educator with five children and nine grandchildren, Janice knows a thing or two about entertaining kids. Indeed, the ethos of her garden is very much to entertain and delight families.

“There is a child’s zone at the back of the house with a cubby house that my husband built 32 years ago,” Janice says. “It’s still standing and the kids love it. There’s also a fairy garden, a garden with gnomes and a dinosaur area.”

While last year’s Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers brought busloads of visitors, it was the families who provided most joy to the Cannings. They would stay for up to an hour, gathering inspiration or just playing with the games on tables that Janice has made out of tiles.

Mosaics and ceramics are a feature of the garden and pride of place has recently been taken by a grandchild’s creation.

“My eldest grandson is 11 and he created three mosaic faces with masks recently, depicting 2020,” she says with pride.

The eclectic mix of influences has created areas perfect for entertaining adults as well as kids.

“There are some old retro things we’ve introduced,” Janice says. “My brother lives on the farm property I grew up on, and we have a few old seats and troughs, my dad’s old whip, and a collection of old retro teapots.

“We also have lovely sitting areas. There’s a big paved area with a table my son built. And there’s a big covered deck that is welcome in summer.”

This very welcoming home and garden always has plenty of produce to add to the entertaining, with lettuce, spinach, tomatoes and rocket, along with rosemary and mint.

Maintenance of the garden has never been a chore for Janice - particularly not during the past few months.

“I’m a bit of a fidgeter and I just love pottering. During the lockdown it’s been wonderful to have the garden,” Janice says gratefully. “I can go and get lost in my garden. I can’t imagine what it would be like without that.”

Whether Janice’s garden is full of children and laughter, or helping others in charitable ways, there’s no doubt it’s a family garden full of love, and one to be cherished now, more than ever.

A GOOD DOSE OF VITAMIN D Exposure to sunlight helps older adults achieve adequate amounts of Vitamin D. But don’t forget too much is dangerous and deadly so sunscreen is a must! These healthy dosages of Vitamin D help increase calcium levels, which ultimatly benefit your bones and immune system. Get out, get active and garden and you’ll start feeling the benefits pretty quickly.

SELF-ESTEEM BOOSTER Creating life, growing your own flowers, trees, fruit and vegetables are an incredible feat. Gardening can be the bridge that makes accomplishing new things possible, and you can look at yourself a little differently. Learning to nurture and raise plants will ultimately help nurture yourself.

STRESS RELIEVER Daisies, poppies and pansies are all bright and colourful, so it’s no surprise that gardening can help lessen the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

“Gardening gives you a chance to focus on something and put your mind to work with a goal and a task in mind,” Dr Hutchins says, “which is helpful especially now, just to see things growing and things thriving.”

KEEPING YOU HAPPY We all know serotonin is the happy chemical our bodies naturally create. When you get down and dirty in the garden you can find the healthy bacteria Mycobacterium vaccae, which lives in soil. By simply inhaling this bacteria it can increase levels of serotonin and reduce anxiety.

STRENGTHEN YOUR HANDS Picking, pulling, planting, cutting, clipping do more than just keep plants happy and healthy, they increase your hand strength. We already knew there weren’t too many specific exercise at the gym to keep your hands and fingers strong, but the answer is right in your front yard.

HEALTHY HEARTS When you’re knee deep in soil each weekend or more frequently, you can really burn some calories. All that digging, weeding and planting life are actually beneficial for your heart and help keep it strong!

“It’s hard work to garden, and it provides some cardiovascular benefit,” says Dr Hutchins.

BRINGING FAMILY TOGETHER Gardening can be done solo, which is great for relaxing, but it can also be a team effort and the perfect opportunity to bond with family and friends.

The fantastic benefits that you can get on your own, are just as important to those you love, so why not share these benefits? Not to mention that gardening has special benefits for children. Studies have found exposure to dirt in the early years can help autoimmune diseases and reducing allergies.

FREE FOOD Fresh fruit and vegetables can be expensive, and if you don’t eat it straight away you risk wasting the food altogether. So having a vegetable, herb or fruit garden you can keep the produce on the tree as long as you need, as well as confidence in knowing it hasn’t been treated with pesticides.

“It’s essentially as farm-totable as it gets,” Dr Hutchins says, “if you’re eating what you’re growing.”

AT UNIVERSITY GARDENS You don’t have to be a student at the University of Southern Queensland to learn more about local Indigenous culture, and the merit of outdoor tranquillity, thanks to two beautifully landscaped gardens on the grounds of the Toowoomba campus at Darling Heights.

Officially named Ju Raku En – translated to mean ‘to enjoy peace and longevity in a public place’ , the Japanese Garden is a favourite of locals and visitors alike and often used for wedding photos due to the picturesque bridges, foliage and ponds.

The nearby Gumbi Gumbi Gardens are a more recent addition to the property, covering more than two hectares and celebrating Aboriginal culture.

Opened in October 2013, this site was designed by landscape architects David and Mary Kearney, in partnership with the Gaibal and Jarowir people who are the traditional custodians of the land on which the university campus now stands.

The gardens feature more than 100 Indigenous plants that were traditionally used by the local Aboriginal communities – including the gumbi gumbi plant which was introduced to Toowoomba as a multi-purpose

medicine and remains a symbol of knowledge and healing today – as well as several teaching spaces.

At its heart, the Gumbi Gumbi Gardens represent the acknowledgement of local Indigenous heritage, culture, and continued contribution to the region.

During this year’s Carnival of Flowers, there will be Indigenous representation at the gardens during the first weekend of the event (September 19 and 20), from 9am to 4pm daily.

Alternatively, there is a free app available to download for self-guided tours, that will connect you to the stories of the Gumbi Gumbi Cultural Gardens while you explore.

The gardens are open every day, with admission free.

A short walk from the Gumbi Gumbi Gardens, the Japanese Garden can be found – one of Australia’s largest and most traditionally designed Japanese stroll gardens.

Situated in the northern sector of the campus, these gardens were opened in 1989 by the Brisbane ConsulGeneral of Japan, and are jointly owned by USQ and the Toowoomba Regional Council.

The picturesque gardens include a mountain stream and waterfall, a central lake, 230 species of Japanese

and Australian trees and plants, and a dry garden.

These gardens are the perfect picnic location, with seating and picnic amenities found throughout the park and toilets available in the adjoining Birch Court Park.

Officially named ‘Ju Raku En’, the gardens are also a popular wedding venue, with the waterfall, the Viewing Pavilion on one of the islands, and the lilac blossoms hanging from the Wisteria Pergola, proving to be popular sites for tying the knot.

Weddings can be booked through USQ Campus.

With multiple picturesque sites, the gardens are a hotspot for photographers of all styles.

The lake, which is the focal point of the garden, is home to various species of duck, turtle and fish, all of which can be observed from shore or from atop one of the traditional red Japanese bridges.

The Japanese Garden is open daily from 6am to dusk and admission is free.

Here are some of the public parks and gardens you can peruse during your visit.

BOYCE GARDENS The sensational Boyce Gardens Estate offers visitors six incredible hectares of sprawling parkland, forest and garden space in Range St, Mount Lofty.

Starting from humble beginnings as a private garden for Leslie and Margaret Boyce (owners of the Toowoomba Foundry), the Boyces gave the estate to the University of Queensland in trust in May 1969.
