ANGUS
Angus Australia Focussed on R&D As a member based organisation, Angus Australia is continually looking at opportunities to add value to the businesses of its members, and to enhance and promote the value of Angus genetics within the Australian beef industry. Consistent with this approach, Angus Australia has greatly increased its involvement in recent years in research and development (R&D) initiatives.
Angus Australia’s most significant investment in R&D is the Angus Sire Benchmarking Program (ASBP). Now planning for its eighth cohort, the ASBP is a young sire program that involves joining approximately 40 sires a year to 2000 Angus females to produce 25 progeny per sire using fixed time artificial insemination. The ASBP aims to a) generate progeny test data on modern Angus bulls, particularly for hard to measure traits such as feed efficiency, abattoir carcase measurements, meat quality attributes and female reproduction; b) generate data for the validation and refinement of Angus BREEDPLAN; and c) build a comprehensive phenotype and genotype database on Australian Angus animals for genomic technology validation, research and development.
Angus Australia has identified a need for increased R&D investment to ensure members remain at the forefront of the latest genetic and breeding technologies..
The increased involvement in R&D represents a large transition from traditional breed society activities, and is consistent with Angus Australia’s vision of being a member-based, not-for-profit, innovation focused company servicing seedstock and commercial producers of Angus and Angusinfluenced cattle. Angus Australia’s Strategic Projects Manager, Mr Christian Duff, said “Angus Australia is now extremely pro-active in seeking R&D opportunities that will be to the benefit of members and the beef supply chain utilising Angus cattle and Angus beef products”.
Mr Duff explained “while the Angus Sire Benchmarking Program was the most visible of Angus Australia’s R&D activities, Angus Australia also had increasing involvement in a myriad of other applied and strategic R&D initiatives relating to breeding and genetic technologies”.
“With the end of the Beef Cooperative Research Centre (Beef CRC) in 2012, there have been some significant changes to R&D investment in beef technologies”. “Angus Australia has identified a need for increased R&D investment to ensure members remain at the forefront of the latest genetic and breeding technologies”.
“Several such R&D initiatives currently being undertaken includes the collection of bone-out retail beef yield data, measuring immune competence and resilience in Angus weaners, identifying Angus genetics for northern Australia production systems and measuring feed intake on pasture.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10 “A key component of Angus Australia’s investment in R&D is forming collaborative partnerships with private and government organisations, both within Australia and internationally”. “Over recent years, Angus Australia has established valued partnerships with organisations such as Meat & Livestock Australia, the University of New England, the University of Illinois, the University of Missouri, CSIRO, NSW Department of Primary Industries, Zoetis Animal Genetics, Rangers Valley Feedlot and Vetoquinol”. “This is additional to Angus Australia’s ongoing collaboration with the Animal Genetics & Breeding Unit (AGBU) and the Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI) with regards to the development and delivery of the Angus BREEDPLAN genetic evaluation. ASBP aims to generate progeny test data on the modern Angus Bulls, particularly for hard to measure traits.

WHY ANGUS 1. MARKET DEMAND Angus and Angus cross cattle receive price premiums due to consistent performance in a range of markets. Angus beef is widely used for the domestic retail and quality food service markets and is preferred by many export markets. Angus females are strongly sought after by re–stockers, producers entering the industry and live export orders for breeding cattle. Angus weaners (steers and heifers) are also in high demand by producers for pasture and feedlot finishing programs, targeting a wide range of markets from domestic steers to heavy grassfed export bullocks. 2. MARKET VERSATILITY Angus are well known for their tremendous market versatility. They have the ability to grow to heavy market weights quickly without becoming over fat. They also have the ability to finish at lighter weights, if desired. Angus have excellent carcase quality, high muscling and moderate maturity patterns providing maximum market versatility. PAGE 12
3. SUPERIOR FERTILITY AND MATERNAL ABILITY Angus females reach puberty early, go in calf quickly and continue to breed regularly to a late age. Angus have a reputation for maintaining high fertility even under difficult seasonal conditions. Angus cows are excellent mothers with good milking ability. They are easy calving, easy care cattle. 4. MEAT QUALITY Angus are known throughout the world for their ability to consistently produce the finest high quality beef. Straightbred and crossbred Angus steers are keenly sought after for pasture and feedlot finishing programs to target high quality beef markets. The superior meat quality of Angus cattle comes from their ability to lay down intra-muscular marbling (taste) fat during the finishing phase, together with excellent tenderness, texture, flavour, meat colour and fat colour. CONTINUED ON PAGE 13 www.chinchillanews.com.au/breedersway
6. BEST ALL ROUND BALANCE One of the most important attributes of Angus is the tremendous balance of highly fertile, productive females and high quality carcases suited to a wide range of markets. Angus are used in crossbreeding programs for their maternal ability, market value, carcase quality and for their growth and hardiness.
8. COMMITTED SERVICE BACKUP Angus Australia provides a wide range of educational, recording, and promotional services to members and their clients. These include the provision of up to date technical information, the promotion of Angus to feedlots, processors and retailers and the development of branded beef products such as Certified Australian Angus Beef (CAABÂŽ) and Angus Pure to increase the demand for commercial Angus cattle.
ANGUS
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 12 5. HARDINESS AND EFFICIENCY Angus are found in all areas of Australia from the high altitudes of the Monaro, with cold temperatures and variable seasons to the boggy conditions experienced during wet winters in Gippsland, Victoria. Angus and Angus cross cattle are also found in hot, dry conditions of central and Northern Australia. Angus cows are hardy enough to look after their calves and still go back in calf in dry, tough years.
7. LARGE DOCUMENTED GENE POOL Angus cattle are bred on every continent in the world. The large number of Angus animals provides an immense pool of available genetics that allows the breed to respond to new challenges and commercial demands. Australian Angus breeders have successfully utilised bloodlines from many countries. Performance recording identifies high performing animals in Australian production systems that are then used widely through artificial breeding providing commercial breeders with bulls to meet market demand. RELAUNCH OF ANGUS BRAND VERIFICATION
Liz Pearson, Commercial Supply Chain Manager With the transition phase of services provided by CAG Pty Ltd over to Angus Australia complete, I am excited to share Angus Australia’s new Angus Brand Verification Program. This program consists of 2 levels of verification, Verified Black Angus Beef and Verified Angus Beef. Both programs are utilised by many well-known Angus brands as a clear show of support for and protection of the Angus brand and Angus Australia. Why are there two programs? I’m glad you asked. Throughout the supply chain there are numerous brands that suit specific markets. With that being the case, what can these brands do to stand out from the crowd. By utilising the Angus Brand Verification that best describes their brand, differentiation is achieved and a genuine marketing advantage over their competitors. Let’s get into the nitty gritty of these two programs; Both programs have a minimum standard of specification, of which all must be met. CONTINUED ON PAGE 15

These sets of assessment guidelines have been developed collaboratively with the brands Angus Australia verifies to meet customer specification and demand. The Verified Black Angus Beef verification is our top level of verification and demonstrates to the market that they can purchase product carrying this stamp with confidence they are buying quality black Angus beef. Verified Angus Beef is our second-tier verification with the key difference of parentage with the dam able to be a minimum 50% Angus animal. Consumers still know they are buying Angus product, however this product may contain a maximum of 25% from another breed. The list of brands utilising Angus Brand Verification is continuing to grow, with increased interest from more brands from across the country coming on board. A key significance of Angus Brand Verification is the commitment by these verified brands and the companies who own them to the protection of the “Angus’ brand. This commitment shows a genuine interest to work with Angus Australia to the advantage of its members. With Angus Australia’s brand verification being completely independent of the brand owner, the confidence of the customers of these brands that it truly is Angus, is at an all-time high. Couple that with the consumers awareness that the verification is independently conducted by the body representing Australian Angus producers who raised the animals and the story doesn’t get much better. Angus Australia is working collaboratively with these brand owners to build recognition and awareness of the Verified Black Angus Beef CONTINUED ON PAGE 17

ANGUS FOCUS ON NORTHERN AUSTRALIA
An important strategic project for Angus Australia is devising a sustainable program with the overall aim to increase demand for Angus and Angus infused cattle in the beef supply chain in northern Australia covering breeders, backgrounder’s, grass finishers, feedlots, abattoirs and exporters. An early initiative to underpin the northern development program was the formation of the Northern Development Consultative Committee.
ANGUS

BENEFITS OF INFUSING ANGUS GENETICS INTO NORTHERN AUSTRALIAN BEEF HERDS Angus Australia has surveyed producers in northern Australia to increase the understanding of the benefits of infusing Angus genetics into their beef herds.
This research, involved interviews with over 60 commercial or seedstock producers either running or supplying bulls into northern Australia. Responses from producers interviewed in this research confirm that using Angus genetics in northern beef herds can have many benefits, and that Angus bulls can be run successfully in most areas of northern Australia if some simple management practices are adopted. The main benefits of incorporating Angus genetics into northern Australian beef herds included improved marketability of stock, hybrid vigour, enhanced female fertility and the introduction of polledness. Additional benefits were also obtained from the utilisation of complementary attributes with other breeds when Angus were included in structured cross breeding programs. The extent to which the benefits
from the infusion of Angus were achieved was impacted by the management of bulls prior to and after relocation to the north, as well as the female replacement policy used in these herds. MARKET FLEXIBILITY Northern producers have reported that the incorporation of Angus genetics has broadened the market options for their stock and provided greater access to processor premiums available for cattle meeting MSA specifications. The adoption of MSA grading by the major meat processors in Queensland and some specific markets requiring a minimum Bos taurus content was cited as a key driver for the increased use of Angus genetics. The growth in demand for Angus branded product has also CONTINUED ON PAGE 19

breeding with polled bulls to achieve a fully polled herd. Northern producers reported that breeding polled cattle was highly desirable as it eliminated stress and weight losses associated with dehorning, reduced the risk of work place injury and reduced bruising of cattle during yarding and transportation. BEEF CRC RESEARCH The Beef Co-operative Research Centre (Beef CRC) conducted a large crossbreeding trial in central Queensland where bulls from eight breeds were joined to Brahman cows. Calves were grown out on grass and in feedlots for different market endpoints. The results showed that Angus cross calves were lightest at birth and had similar growth performance and carcase weights to European crosses. They were easier to finish, with good muscling, more marbling, better tenderness and highest MSA meat quality scores.

Premiums of up to 20 cents/kg live weight or more have been cited for Angus or Angus cross steers over animals with no Angus content. ENHANCED FERTILITY Increases in calving rates were widely reported by northern producers following the incorporation of Angus genetics into their breeding herds. Reduced age at puberty allowed heifers to conceive earlier and calve down at a younger age when the seasonal conditions were favourable. In addition, shorter lactation anoestrus periods were reported in the crossbred cow herd, resulting in shorter calving intervals and heavier weaners at mustering. HYBRID VIGOUR Incorporating Angus genetics resulted in benefits through hybrid vigour among crossbred calves and replacement females, as well as combining positive attributes of both Bos taurus and Bos indicus genetics. It was reported that the expression of hybrid vigour decreased the age at which progeny are finished. This enhanced the chances of obtaining premiums associated with MSA grading by ensuring that bullocks were above 500 kilograms live weight with milk or 2 teeth. Crossbred females with Angus content were reported as being more fertile and having superior milk production compared to Bos indicus derived females. POLLEDNESS One of the benefits associated with the use of Angus bulls is that the majority of their progeny will be polled. While the polled gene is dominant, the African horn gene and scur genes common in Bos indicus breeds are inherited separately. Consequently, it may take several generations of

The Angus has established itself as one of the premier breeds of cattle in the beef industry. It is the most widespread and keenly sought-after temperate beef breed in the world. This popularity is due to the greater probability achieved by using Angus compared to other breeds. Below are seven reasons why beef producers are choosing Angus: 1. MARKET DEMAND Angus and Angus cross cattle receive price premiums due to consistent performance in a range of markets. Angus beef is widely used for the domestic retail and quality food service markets and is preferred by many export markets. Angus females are strongly sought after by stockers, producers entering the industry and live export orders for breeding cattle. Angus weaners (steers and heifers) are also in high demand by producers for pasture and feedlot finishing programs, targeting a wide range of markets from domestic steers to heavy grass-fed export bullocks. 3. SUPERIOR FERTILITY AND MATERNAL FERTILITY Angus females reach puberty early, go in calf quickly and continue to breed regularly to a late age. 5. HARDINESS AND EFFICIENCY Angus are found in all areas of Australia from the high altitudes of the

Monaro, with cold temperatures and variable seasons to the boggy conditions experienced during wet winters in Gippsland, Victoria. Angus and Angus cross cattle are also found in hot, dry conditions of central and Northern Australia. Angus cows are hardy enough to look after their calves and still go back in calf in dry, tough years. 6. BEST ALL-ROUND BALANCE One of the most important attributes of Angus is the tremendous balance of highly fertile, productive females and high quality carcases suited to a wide range of markets. Angus are used in crossbreeding programs for their maternal ability, market value, carcase quality and for their growth and hardiness. Those reasons can provide potential buyers and breeders with useful information on why they should breed Angus, all while outlining the variety of benefits that the Angus boasts.

FRENCH BREED FOREFRONT OF THE BEEF INDUSTRY
For an exceptional array of characteristics that places your cattle at the forefront of the beef industry, look no further than the Bazadaise breed. The Bazadaise breed are a pure French breed from Bazas in the Bordeaux region of southern France. Their use in the initial period of the their existence was in the early stages of farming life, as their strength, mobility and quiet temperament enabled them to be a valuable draught animal. Their characteristics make them ideal as both stud cattle as well as in a commercial herd.

The Bazadaise breed of cattle consists of an exceptional combination of high muscling and ability to marble off grass. Couple that with their ability to thrive in a variety of conditions throughout Australia, the Bazadaise breed is the perfect choice for Australian beef producers who want to increase their profitability and productivity. So much so they can be found in cooler, temperate climate of Tasmania to the hot, arid plains of the Northern Territory. Calves traditionally experience a high growth rate soon after birth, and once mature they are lauded for their exceptional length, well developed hind-quarter and large eye muscle area. Their breed ranges in colour from a charcoal or dark grey to a light grey with a short, fine coat. From a nutrition perspective, Bazadaise cattle can adapt to various forms of fodder, from the soft, lush pastures of southern Australia to the harsh Mitchell grass plains of the Northern Territory. The Bazadaise breed is said to increase producer’s productivity and profitability through their: • High growth rates and feed efficiency • High dressing percentages • Younger turn off age Their meat quality and quantity make them highly sought-after amongst butchers and the Bazadaise breed has established itself as a consumer favourite. Their meat characteristics consist of: • Very high yielding carcasses • good proportion of marbling www.chinchillanews.com.au/breedersway
The Bazadais is a fine boned, heavily muscled animal that produces exceptional yields as both a pure and cross breed. Added to that, they have achieved marbling scores of one and two coupled with the advantage of being able to finish of grass as well as grain. Through comprehensive gene testing, Genestar determined the following: • Bazadaise are equal and better for the marbling gene compared with other breeds (with the exception of the wellknown extreme marbling of the Wagyu breed which can’t compete of the weight for age basis). • The Bazadaise breed has a clearly superior balance of feed efficiency with tenderness across all breeds. These merits in turn give confidence to producers and potential buyers that the Bazadaise breed improve turn-off weights in shorter intervals more economically, as well as offering an improved meat quality of superior tenderness for the consumer. Greater detail on the Bazadaise’s defing characteristics: HEAD: Their coat is short and smooth and can have the dappled appearance. Bull –steel to lighter grey with a silver sword through the shoulders. Cow – generally lighter in colour, grey and often slightly shaded with a wheat colour. Calf – it is born with a wheat coloured coat and in the months that follow takes on the typical colour of the breed. EYES: They are well hooded, pigmented, surrounded by a dominant silver circle with very light grey lashe EARS: They are low set, thick with black or grey hair inside. NECK: The neck is coupled neatly to a sloping shoulder. In bulls of 2 years old the neck becomes thick with a prominent hump. SHOULDERS: Neat sloping shoulders. Bulls’ shoulders develop to be prominent and muscular. FLANKS: They are round and large and come out horizontally from the spinal column.
It should be an extension of the line of the back showing a broad pelvis and slightly inclined. HEIGHT: On average between 1m 40 cm and 1m 47cm. COAT: Their coat is short and smooth and can have the dappled appearance. Bull – steel to lighter grey with silver sword through the shoulders. BELGIAN BLUE
BELGIAN BLUE
Belgian Blue Show Cows
ABOUT THE BREED The Belgian Blue cattle breed is currently one of the most important beef breeds in the world today. Its popularity and acceptance is based initially on the production of an exceptionally lean, high bone out, high yielding carcase. Further acceptance of the Belgian Blue is for its outstanding results in cross breeding, culminating in high efficiency, excellent performance, superb carcase quality, enormous carcase yield and most importantly exceptionable temperament. These positives have resulted in tens of thousands of Belgian Blue cross calves being born in Australia each year with producers extremely satisfied. Belgian Blue Calf

BELGIAN BLUE No other breed has the degree of muscling or extreme high carcase yeild that the Belgian Blue has been selected for. ORIGIN Belgian Blues originated in the Ardenne Hills region of Belgium at the end of the nineteenth century when native dairy cattle were crossed with introduced Shorthorn beef cattle. The distinctive blue roan colouring – hence the name – is present in varying degrees in Belgian Blue cattle and is attributed to their Shorthorn ancestry. Initially bred as a dual-purpose breed, by the 1950’s a more heavily muscled animal was being selected for, resulting in today’s solid, beef breed. The Belgian Blue breed was introduced into Australia in 1988 and the Australian Belgian Blue Cattle Society Inc. was formed in the same year. Breeds Characteristics Colours can be blue roan, blue roan and white, black and white, or just white. In other words, colours range from pure white through to black, with any degree of blue roan in between. Average weight for mature bulls range from 1,000 to 1,200 kilograms, and for cows 650 – 900 kilograms. Average birth weights for calves are 40-55 kilograms (pure-bred) and 30-45 kilograms (cross-bred).
Belgian Blue Cows
The Belgian Blue is a naturally horned, large animal with a well rounded outline and a quite distinctive, heavily muscled frame. The shoulder, back, loin and rump are all prominently muscled. The head is light and the back is straight. The hips are hidden under a sloping rump, the tail set is prominent and the skin is fine. With strong yet light bones, Belgian Blues move freely. They usually exhibit early maturation. The breed is known for its very docile temperament in both pure-bred and cross-bred animals. They have a tough and hardy constitution and adapt readily to climatic extremes. Cows tend to have easy calving when cross-bred, and have performed well in fertility trails. Belgian Blue Bull Rump

BELMONT RED
BELMONT RED WHY USE BELMONT REDS?
Belmont Red has a unique advantage over British, European and Bos Indicus breeds. As a sire breed, the tropically adapted Belmont Red has a unique advantage over British, European and Bos Indicus breeds for use in crossbreeding. Belmont Reds possess all of the production and beef quality traits of the British and European Bos Taurus breeds, with the added benefits of superior adaptation traits including tick and parasite resistance, heat tolerance and drought resistance, combined with calving ease and small birth weight calves.
Belmont Red herd
Belmont Reds have adaptation traits equal to the Bos Indicus breeds, with the added advantage of very high fertility including early sexual maturity in both males and females with females able to reconceive at low weights and whilst lactating, in conjunction with the Belmont Reds superior carcass qualities and renowned docile temperament.

At its inception the objective for the Belmont Red breed was to blend an average of the genes from the Africander and from the British. Adaptive traits such as easy calving, parasite resistance, disease resistance, heat tolerance and hardiness, as well as meat quality traits and fertility were inherited from the Africander. Productive traits, such as fertility and growth, as well as carcase and meat quality were also inherited from the British. Genetically the Africander component distinguishes the Belmont from other Composite breeds based on the Brahman such as Santa Gertrudis, Droughtmaster, Brangus, Charbray and Braford. The range and combinations of established breeds included in the Belmont Red provided it with all the desirable traits of the British, European and other Tropical breeds. The herd book remains open and grading up to pure Belmont can simply be accomplished in three back crosses. The Belmont can therefore be established by simply grading up from any base cow herd through three generations of mating to registered Belmont bulls, the fourth crop being registerable as pure Belmonts. This allows the Belmont Breeders to tap into a broad genetic pool and retain desirable gene combinations from the parent breeds. With the correct selection programs, the productive desirable gene combinations can be accumulated and fixed. In Australia the Belmont Red is the only Composite breed that has been developed from crossing the Africander breed with British breeds. The Africander genetic component makes the Belmont uniquely different from the Brahman composites. Belmonts are a tropically adapted Bos Taurus. The Belmont Breed Society has based its standards on productive and adaptive traits that can be objectively measured and are known to be heritable. Selection is therefore based on accurate measurements of traits that are heritable and economically important in terms of beef production. Any Belmont animal must therefore be reared in a herd which has adopted a system of performance recording that has been approved by Council, such as Breedplan.
The Belmont is about a philosophy of breeding highly productive, easy care cattle....
Although the colour is predominantly red, selection for this, or other aesthetic traits are generally not considered important.
The Belmont is about a philosophy of breeding highly productive, easy care cattle, that are adapted to their environment. In this respect the Belmont differs significantly from ALL other breeds.

BELTED GALLOWAY
BELTED GALLOWAY LONGEVITY, HARDINESS AND ADAPTABILITY The breed started and was developed in the austere hill country in the Galloway area of south-west Scotland and is believed to have originated more than 300 years ago the result of crossing the Galloway with the Dutch Lakenvelder. The “Beltie” is naturally polled and has striking colourings of black, red or dun, with a white belt. For sheer eye appeal, no breed is more distinctive in the paddock and the term “beautiful Belties” is often used. They have a “double coat ” of hair, consisting of a long, shaggy overcoat and a soft, thick undercoat, providing excellent insulation in cold, bleak weather and reducing the amount of feed intake required to maintain body weight. Belted Galloways have several traits which will fit in with just about any crossbreeding program and the targeting of all domestic and export markets. Belted Galloway are known for a number of their rare and quality traits. Some of these traits are listed below: LONGEVITY Belted Galloways have a reputation for longevity – many are reputed to live until 17 to 20 years of age.
HARDINESS The Belted Galloway’s heavy, double hair coat means that heat loss is reduced, winter feed costs are significantly less and rain hardly penetrates in cold, wet weather. The Belted Galloway cow has about 4000 hairs to the square inch making the coat resistant to severe cold. “Belties” have, in fact, been used on stations with an annual rainfall as low as 150 mm and with their superior foraging ability, have thrived in these harsh, pastoral areas. ADAPTABILITY “Belties” are able to adapt to a variety of climatic conditions. They have good foraging abilities, ensuring that they thrive where other breeds fail. The coat is shed in hot weather, thus making the “Beltie” a highly adaptable and versatile breed for a variety of climatic conditions. HIGH FERTILITY The Belted Galloway is an extremely fertile breed; the cows are long lived, regular breeders and are noted for their ability to produce a healthy, well nourished calf at weaning, even in
Belted Galloway Herd

the harshest of conditions. Some Belted Galloways have had two separate calves in one year. One cow in Australia has even produced three lots of twins in a row.
The distinctive ‘belt’ marks the naturally polled, adaptable and hardy breed of the Belted Galloway. The Belted Galloway originated in South-West Scotland and adapts readily to the diverse Australian conditions. With colourings of black, dun and red, the distinctive white belt is a prominent feature of the Belted Galloway breed. The adaptability and fertility, coupled with a long life span makes the Belted Galloway an excellent choice for your farming operation. The Belted Galloway AGM will be held the last weekend in July in Melbourne. There will be the Annual General Meeting, a members forum as well as a farm tour. In 2018 Australia will be hosting the World Galloway Conference in Adelaide. Delegates from all over the world shall be in attendance and it will be run during Adelaide Show time.

BONSMARA
BONSMARA
THE INTRODUCTION OF BONSMARA'S INTO AUSTRALIA ARTICLE BY MORTON HUDSON The very first introduction to Bonsmara cattle in South Africa came in 1984 when I traveled as tour leader with a group of Belmont Red breeders and other invited cattlemen to see the breed which had been developed similarly; although previously, to our CSIRO developed Belmont Red and also inspect the comparisons with the Belmont Red/Bonsmara cattle bred with BR semen provided by co-operators in Australia (Belmont Research Station, Tremere and Mt Eugene) for use in the project. Other cattle breeds of interest to all our group were also included in the tour. The hospitality and camaraderie of the R.S.A cattlemen made
the trip a huge success, and impressed upon us the necessity to import some of the livestock to Australia in spite of the ban on imports due to the threat of Foot and Mouth disease which was endemic in R.S.A. This reality had to be accepted and the path for importations would prove to be long, slow and expensive. Firstly the protocol had to be established to allow importation from a Foot and Mouth disease endemic country. The opportunity to get started came in 1992, when CSIRO called for co-operators to financially assist the importation of Boran and

Bonsmara are a tropically adapted Bos taurus breed. Performance recording is the cornerstone of their development. They are the dominant breed in South Africa, where some 60,000 registered females are currently being performance recorded with the commercial and seedstock herds, adding to around 4 million head.

BRAFORD
BRAFORD WHERE IT ALL BEGAN Brafords are a real Australian success story First developed in 1946 when Brahman genetics were introduced into a Hereford herd in Central Queensland to combat the staggering losses caused by cattle tick and eye cancer. In 1962 a group of visionary cattlemen met in Rockhampton with the intention of forming an organisation to represent Braford cattle breeders. The Australian Braford Society was formed and has continued to prosper in Australia and worldwide. 2012 proudly marked the 50th Anniversary of the Australian Braford Society. It was a time to reflect and thank the pioneers of our breed for their determination and dedication and also a time to look forward, set goals and expand. Brafords are bred to withstand the harshest seasons while remaining fertile and functional. Backed by feed efficiency data and meat quality awards, the modern Braford has a great deal to be proud of and the ability to enhance any straight or crossbreeding program.

BRAFORD
BRAFORD BIO: The Australian Braford has been marketed all over the world with great results, which shows how successful the breed is. There are established breed societies in Paraquay, Uruguay, Brazil, The United States and South Africa. The diverse nature of the breed allows it to adapt from the hot tropics to inland desert regions to snowy terrain. When choosing a bull, select an animal best suited to your area. The Braford Bull is a great choice when looking for a sire to deliver an easy doing animal, while still delivering progeny with great carcass attributes. The Braford Bull is a free ranging animal that can cover good distances and has a high virility to ensure the herd is covered. When used in a crossbreeding program, either Bos Taurus or Bos Indicus breeders, Braford crosses deliver a good hybrid result. Braford steers and trade heifers are very adaptable animals, which is important in today’s climate for ever changing markets. The Braford Steers strongest attribute is its ability to be marketed throughout the growth curve of the animal. It’s easy doing nature means it can deliver carcass attributes and muscle yield in varying environments. The Braford Cow is great option as a core breeder to launch into CONTINUED ON PAGE 38

BRAHMAN REVOLUTION
Brahman bloodlines can be found in more than half of the national herd. OVER the last 100 years, Brahman cattle have been bred to suit Northern Australian conditions but their adaptability to any environment has been proven with the breed being found over all of Australia. It has been said that the growth and development of the Brahman cattle in Australia is the greatest livestock revolution in history. From an initial import in 1933 of just 18 head from the United States, Brahman bloodlines can today be found in more than half the national herd. In Queensland, Brahman Calf

The Australian Brahman Breeders Association has a strong membership
with 1000 active stud members recording between 20,000 – 25,000 animals a year. This strong Brahman community regularly contributes to the Australian community holding fund raising events, making donations from sales and members of this community participating in the Variety Challenge. In excess of $100,000 was given to rural Australia and its people in recent years. Brahman cattle play a major role in the supply chain of domestic and premium beef export markets such as Japan and European Union. They are also the breed of choice for live export to feedlots across South East Asia. Australian Brahman Breeders Association
Limited (ABBA) has a positive outlook on the future of rural Australia and is committed to its growth and sustainability, while maintaining a deep commitment to the welfare of our animals.

over 75 percent of the herd contains Brahman genetics, with 100,000 – plus Brahman bulls working north of the Tropic of Capricorn alone. This reliance on the breed across Northern Australia is what underpins demand for Brahman seed stock and has cemented the annual three-day Rockhampton Brahman Week Sale as the largest single beef breed sale in the world. Another major achievement in the sale ring for the breed in 2017 was the sale of a Brahman Bull at auction for the top price of any breed in Australia of $325, 000. That single vendor sale averaged $27,000 for 76 bulls.

KEY ATTRIBUTES
Key ingredients for successful beef production are: Adaptability to the environment Production potential EFFICIENCY The Brahman's improved efficiency of production over breeds is closely linked to its unique digestive system attributes: The ability to recycle nutrients through the blood stream and saliva promotes digestion
Reduced water intake means reduced urination resulting in less nitrogen loss and higher blood nitrogen levels Maintenance of higher intake levels of low quality feed Low maintenance requirement Slower rate of protein turnover enables muscle and body tissue development to continue on low feed intake Brahmans remain productive longer Reduced sulphur demand for hair growth means more available for amino acids associated with growth and production Lower rumen liquid volume and higher rumen bacterial fat results in

HIGH YIELDING CARCASE The Australian Brahman's impressive production performance on the hoof is backed up by an equally impressive performance as a carcase.
HEAT TOLERANCE Tolerance to heat is a major economic factor in tropical beef production. When the body temperature rises cattle become stressed, resulting in reduced feeding time and feed intake, increased water consumption, wasted energy panting, poor quality meat and even death.
Lower rumen content means higher dressing percentages Superior yield of saleable meat is a result of: Excellent muscle development Uniform even fat cover Less intramuscular fat which means less waste
PARASITE RESISTANT The Brahman's resistance to cattle tick is of major economic importance because of less chemical use and increased weight gain.

higher levels of energy rich compounds in the blood stream. FERTILITY An animal's reproductive performance is closely linked to its adaptability and nutritional levels.
While these results are exceptional, growth rates of over 1.8kg/day over 100 days are common.
The Australian Brahman's resistance to cattle tick is related to: immune response prevents ticks developing reduced tick burden on pasture and on animals sleek coat does not favour attachment of tick larvae chemicals in sweat gland act as repellent.
FEEDLOT PERFORMANCE AND FEED COVERSION EFFICIENCY Outstanding results have been achieved by Brahman cattle in feedlots. Four groups (total 1039 head) of North Queensland Brahman cattle finished through Aronui feedlot achieved weight gains of 3.13 to 2.38 kg/head/ day over 100 days and showed feed efficiency ratings up to 54% above the feedlot average. While these results are exceptional, growth rates of over 1.8kg/day over 100 days are common. Resistance to tropical internal parasites is also linked to their superior response and ability to tolerate stress.

BRANGUS Brangus herd
BRANGUS
BREEDING BRANGUS FOR THE FUTURE The future of the Brangus breed is in safe hands – and is going from strength to strength. Brangus cattle were first introduced to Australia from the USA in the 1950s. Many of the foundation Brangus stud cattle breeders were based in the heart of Queensland cattle country. The drought resilience of Brangus combined with superb calving and growth weights meant Brangus cattle were an excellent fit for the Australian beef industry.
one of the reasons Brangus cattle are growing in popularity across Australia,” Ms Fawcett said. While genetic variance to suit local conditions is one drawcard of the Brangus breed, the cattle also possess a number of fundamental qualities producers are looking for, especially across the eastern states of Australia.
The functionality of the breed is key for me – they are good mothers with plenty of milk and ease of calving....
Since then the Brangus breed has naturally progressed to adapt to the diverse Australian environment. The Australian Brangus Cattle Association (ABCA) allows domestic Brangus to contain up to 75% Brahman blood content, an increase from the standard 3/8 Brahman combined with 5/8 Angus. This gives local Brangus cattle a uniquely Australian stamp. This diversity in genetics has allowed breeders from far northern Queensland down to Tasmania to acquire Brangus cattle best suited to local climates without compromising on the fundamental qualities of the breed. Sue Fawcett of Lazy S Brangus Stud, Condamine agrees that this may be one reason people are noticing more Brangus purebred or cross cattle in the paddocks than in previous years. “The variance in the Brahman content of the Australian breed is PAGE 44
The fundamental qualities of the Brangus breed include, but are not limited to: • Climate suitability – Adept at foraging especially when necessitated in drought affected areas; reliability in hot and humid weather. • Females – Possess excellent maternal qualities including consistent fertility and reliable milk supplies. • Males – Bulls sire high weight-for-age weaners, docile temperament for ease of handling. • Genetics – Impressive weight gain and growth rates; strong resilience against ticks and bloating. • Beef – Carcases without an excess of fat; highly marketable, quality and consumer trusted beef product. This enviable combination of traits is the reason Ms Fawcett has invested in the Brangus breed. “The functionality of the breed is key for me – they are good mothers with plenty of milk and ease of calving,” Ms Fawcett said. www.chinchillanews.com.au/breedersway
BRANGUS Brangus Bull
“They’re also resilient in dry times, with the ability to adapt to Australia's harsh climate conditions,” she added. Ms Fawcett, has bred Brangus cattle for over 30 years. Her parents John and Wendy Fawcett registered stud number 150, Coreen Brangus Stud in 1971. As a family, they have seen the Brangus breed go from strength to strength. “Although marketing of the beef at the consumer end has made the Brangus grow in popularity, the cattle have to be able to stand up and perform in the paddock and they do. This is what makes them an

attractive and profitable breed for producers,” Ms Fawcett said. In the twelve months to November 2017 the ABCA recorded twentythree new registrations for Brangus operations throughout the country. With a mix of both stud and commercial Brangus operations recorded, the majority of the operations are based in Queensland but also included registrations from New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia.

HERE ARE many advantages in crossbreeding with Brangus sires, no matter what breed of female you have. Brangus bulls are renowned for producing light birth-weight calves, and the calving ease advantage of the breed means you can use Brangus bulls over heifers with confidence. F1 heifers, sired by Brangus bulls, carry high maternal value, fertility, milking ability and hybrid vigour, and are valuable heifer replacements to retain in your program. Brangus bulls sire carcasses of high quality that will finish extremely well at any age for your targeted market –be it grain crop or grass fed. Brangus steers are noted for their high quality carcase which has been proven by many successes achieved in carcase competitions and feed back trials all over Australia. John and Jo Searle from West Point Gulargambone, NSW, crossed a Brangus bull over their Hereford herd they had developed over twenty years. “By using Brangus bulls over our Hereford cows, we achieved a 15 per cent weight advantage at weaning,” Mr Searle said. “All the Brangus-sired “Super Baldies” have excellent eye pigmentation and superb temperament,” he said.

CHARBRAY
CHARBRAY CHARBRAYS ARE FRONT ROW AND CENTRE
Charbray Cows Grazing
AS a breed society we could suggest Charbray cattle entered the world as the answer to every cattleman’s prayer, but as every cattleman knows, no breed originated flawlessly. It has taken hard work, determination and above all, a clear vision, for Charbrays to reach their current position as leaders in consistency as well as performance. Dedicated Charbray seedstock producers and their commercial breeding counterparts have witnessed the breed go from strength to strength in the last decade and agree a complimentary breeding plan was the key turning point. Since its official launch at Beef Week 2009, the breeding plan has offered a direction for Charbray breeders to improve the quality and consistency of their product. Inconsistencies stemming from reliance on rotational terminal sire breeding using both parent breeds was recognised and denounced. A dedicated team worked to create a pathway forward for the breed, and the rest you could say, is history. Charbrays have undeniably been leading the field in the selling and show rings with buyers and judges alike recognising the breed’s new found market suitability. Bull buyers will happily tell you a walk down a saleyard lane now leaves them scratching their heads at which Charbray stood out as the best. The same goes for competition judges who often can be quoted describing the closeness between Charbray entries. With quality and consistency now front and centre, the possibilities for success with Charbrays are limitless and the timing couldn’t be more perfect. The Charbray National Sale is celebrating its 40th year in 2017 and is sure to offer recognised Charbray pedigrees that have emerged to drive the breed forward. In such a milestone year, Charbray breeders will come together to look back on 40 years of development and share in the pride that comes from meeting expectation and delivering on promises. PAGE 52
Those promises based on measurable results are the backbone to the highly sought after progeny making their way into producers’ paddocks today. Demand for outstanding Charbray pedigrees is expected to surge again at this year’s national sale with international enquiries already cropping up throughout the seedstock selling group. Commercial and stud Charbray operators alike will attest to putting solid runs on the board in recent years with confidence building for a knock-out 2017 selling season. Bulls at the 2016 Charbray National Sale averaged $6597/head with top sires now consistently commanding a healthy price tag- a huge achievement for the breed. High prices are undoubtedly linked to high quality and the Charbray breed’s comprehensive successes can only flow back to producers in their efforts to deliver a superior product. It is fair to say Charbrays are receiving a premium a premium across all markets, be it within the saleyards, direct feedlot trades or in the stud sector. Those that have stuck with the breed are now reveling in the success they saw from afar while those who didn’t find favourable results early on are beginning to return to Charbrays with a new sense of purpose. Now is the time to rejuvenate your Charbray herd and reap the rewards on offer. We’ve got the formula just right.
The possibilities for success with Charbrays are limitless and the timing couldn’t be more perfect. www.chinchillanews.com.au/breedersway

THE Charbray is the versatile beef breed combining the hardiness and tick resistance of the Brahman with the lean beef characteristics and docile temperament of the Charolais. LOW BIRTH WEIGHTS = NO CALVING PROBLEMS Charbray-sired calves are small at birth, however, they maximise hybrid vigour with rapid post-birth growth and have outstanding feed-converting ability and weaning weights. TOP PERFORMANCE = INCREASED RETURNS Whether fed on grain or grass, Charbrays perform with top feed conversion rates, excellent weight gain and an ideal carcase. Charbrays return premium prices whether sold as weaners,
stores or finished cattle, and are in great demand from feedlotters, processors and for the live cattle trade. FERTILITY The Charbray female has the ability to get in calf under stress conditions while still rearing a calf with high carcase quality. FLEXIBLE BREEDING PLAN The Charbray breeding is flexible and modern. The (Brahman) bos indicus content can be increased to cope with a harsher environment or similarly, reduced in softer environments. The Regulations of the Society allow breeders to introduce either the Brahman or Charolais breed at any stage of the breeding program to refresh the desired attributes of that respective breed.

Cut Above the Rest Charolais are a force to be reckoned with in the commercial market place. In 2008, over $8 million worth of Charolais bulls were sold at public auctions around the country, demonstrating the importance and relevance of this great breed of cattle. With demand outstripping supply, Charolais sired calves are continually commanding top prices in the saleyards. Many progressive commercial cattlemen using Charolais genetics are selling the progeny directly to feedlotters and processors, who understand the value of their growth and yield attributes. Consistent carcases time and again The Charolais ability to sire consistent carcasses is well known, and proven time and time again. Many in the processing and retailing sectors regard the quality and consistency of Charolais as the breed’s advantage, marking them as a preferred article, always in demand. With the Charolais carcases showing as much as a $200 advantage, it’s easy to see why. Meat quality consumers appreciate Beef production is about producing a meal and keeping customers coming back for more. With a quality eating experience assessed by such factors as ‘juiciness, tenderness and flavour’ it’s important that animals have the genetic propensity to provide meat quality. CHAROLAIS
CHAROLAIS HISTORY In Australia Charolais were the first European breed to enter Australia, by way of semen imports from the UK, and live animals from New Zealand, in 1969. In Australia, their numbers grew from the first calf, born in 1970, until there are now about 19,000 active registered breeding females in the Australian herdbook and 800 members Australia wide. Australian Charolais continued to develop with the introduction of Charolais semen from Canada, as well as the continuing use of French/ UK bulls. New Zealand also was ahead of Australia in numbers of purebred animals and many animals were imported to Australia. Early stock imported to Australia were carefully selected, which has since meant that the modern Australian Charolais is extremely well suited to our conditions. Within just ten years of the first crossbred calf being born in Australia, the breed was recognised by commercial and stud producers alike for its top performance. In 1980, Charolais proved they were indeed a force to be reckoned with when they won the prestigious Hordern Trophy for the first time. Several more wins in this competition and many more Interbreed wins around Australia, including an unrivaled 13 wins at Brisbane Royal,

have confirmed that Charolais are unbeatable for depth of quality. Their correctness, growth for age, masculinity in males, and femininity and milking ability in females can not be surpassed by any breed. Since dominating the show ring, Charolais continue to be recognised in the commercial market place. In 2005, over $10 Million worth of Charolais bulls were sold at public auctions around the Country, demonstrating the importance and relevance of this great breed of cattle. (This increase to almost $12 Million in 2006). Charolais sired calves are continually comanding top prices in the saleyards, while commercial cattlemen “in the know are using Charolais and selling the progeny directly to feedlotters and abattoirs, who are paying premiums for their growth and yield attributes.

The Charolais ability to sire consistent carcasses is also being proved again and again, indicated by the eagerness of processors to source Charolais sired calves. The quality of these carcasses has been proved on numerous occasions, with Charolais carcasses winning Grand Champion awards at prominent carcass competitions. Charolais continue to positively influence profitablity in all sectors of the beef supply chain. Charolais Cows

DROUGHTMASTER
DROUGHTMASTER PROVEN PERFORMERS
Efficient, effective and economical performance during production
Droughtmaster bull
Droughtmaster bulls
Droughtmaster bull and owner
The pioneer cattlemen who developed the Droughtmaster retained the most desirable performance traits from both Bos indicus and Bos taurus genetics. They developed a breed which could perform by consistently producing and reproducing despite parasites and adverse environments, while economically producing high yielding carcasses of quality beef. Performing well in harsh conditions is important, but performance in all links of the beef production chain is more important. The Droughtmaster is renowned for its performance in: Reproduction: Calving ease, high libido, fertility and adaptability all combine to give the Droughtmaster an outstanding reproductive performance.
Growth: Excellent milking ability, digestive efficiency, low nutritional requirements, feed conversion efficiency, walking ability and foraging ability combine to make the Droughtmaster an outstanding performer. Consistently outgrowing most other breeds when nutrition is restricted, they perform as well as most breeds in feedlots or on high quality pasture. Feed Efficiency: A low maintenance digestive system, unique to Bos Indicus derived breeds, contributes to the Droughtmaster’s reputation for highly efficient feed conversion, which provides a large economic advantage. Pasture: Optimum growth under a range of variable conditions is major benefit offered by the Droughtmaster. From

Providing major benefits without changing your breed completely In the temperate regions of Australia, traditionally the home of the British breeds, the low maintenance Droughtmaster breed is being used increasingly in crossbreeding programs to produce easy care productive cattle. They are also used in tropical areas to improve carcase qualities and performance. The progeny resulting from this crossbreeding, have a significant economic advantage through their inheritance of Droughtmaster traits. These include: Calving ease, adaptation, longevity, reduced eye problems, bloat resistance, mothering ability and milking ability. High growth sires can be used successfully over Droughtmaster females, due to generations of
Droughtmaster breeders constantly selecting for: • Low Birth Weight • Calf Shape • Pelvic Structure The Droughtmaster bull passes on these dominant traits to his progeny in a crossbreeding program. Consequently, the F1 Droughtmaster female is renowned as a very efficient dam, and most effective when used with high growth sires. This combination fits the axiom ‘cows for your country - bulls for your market’. With equal parts of Bos taurus and Bos indicus blood, the Droughtmaster provides the opportunity to crossbreed without causing a dramatic change to either the visual appearance (phenotype) or to the genotype of the progeny.

prime improved pasture in temperate regions, light native pasture in tropical right through to drought conditions which invariably plague many areas of Australia, the Droughtmaster is recognised as one of the leading performers. Asian Feedlots: Asian feedlots are an important and growing section of the global beef production chain. Access to high quality stock feed as well as climatic extremes are major challenges for them. An ability to handle the Asian heat and humidity, complemented by the efficient conversion of lower quality feed make the Droughtmaster a popular choice for the Asian feedlot buyers.

GELBVIEH Gelbvieh Cows Grazing
GELBVIEH
A UNIQUE BREED IN THE BEEF INDUSTRY
Gelbvieh Award Winner
GELBVIEH are a unique breed in the beef industry. Strong maternal traits with outstanding growth rates and excellent muscle development make the breed an obvious choice. A quiet temperament and early maturity promotes even fat cover at an early age. The result is an animal that reaches market weight younger, with optimum finish and tender, tasty meat. Gelbvieh cattle range in colour from a golden honey shade to deep rich red. Black Gelbvieh are increasingly popular. This makes Gelbvieh ideal for crossing over most breeds, producing an even, solid coat colour for a uniform appearance in the paddock and saleyards. Gelbvieh cattle are preferred in many crossbreeding programs around the world, used effectively over both British and Tropical breeds. They are the preferred breed in the USA for composite breeding.
GELBVIEH TRAITS
Gelbvieh Cow and Calf
Gelbvieh Bull
PAGE 64
Growth: Gelbvieh cows have a lower mature weight and are therefore more efficient than most other European breed females. They produce a lower birthweight calf which is born easily and quickly exhibits a strong growth pattern. When Gelbvieh bulls are used over British Breed females the resultant progeny is expected to be at least 10% heavier at weaning age than straight bred calves out of the same females. Similar results are expected when crossing with Bos Indicus females. The result is more money in the producers pocket for no extra cost. Maternal: Most European breeds are used as terminal sires with their progeny being sold for slaughter. Gelbvieh are strong in growth and maternal traits and can be used as terminal sires or their heifer progeny retained as ideal replacement females. Their puberty, fertility and milk production is also superior to other European cross females. This has been confirmed at extensive cross breeding trials such as Clay Centre, Nebraska, USA. Puberty: Gelbvieh have the earliest puberty of any beef breed, so under normal conditions Gelbvieh can be joined as early as 13 months to calve at 22 months - instead of at 24-30 months like most of the other larger breeds. This gives the first calf Gelbvieh heifer 15 months before she has to calve again as a 3 year old. www.chinchillanews.com.au/breedersway
GELBVIEH Quiet Temperament: Gelbvieh have a quiet and inquisitive nature and display a docile temperament. Gelbvieh pass this quality on to their offspring. A quiet nature is being demanded by producers and processors and is advantageous in workplace safety, bruising and meat quality areas. Gelbvieh’s excellent temperament makes them ideal for farmers who run a small number of cattle or in the small farm situation. Equally, large herds are advantaged when it comes to temperament, making Gelbvieh a preferred choice especially in large crossbreeding programs. Carcass Quality: Studies carried out at the Clay Centre, Nebraska USA, confirmed that Gelbvieh had the largest ribeye muscle area per 100kg of all breeds, hence they have high cutout yields. Gelbvieh are a lean breed with a fast growth rate with the ability to fatten at a younger age. Given their marketability as yearlings, they are a source of high cutout yields. Both purebred and crossbred Gelbvieh cattle have demonstrated their excellent market suitability by winning beef carcase championships around the country. This was confirmed at Beef 2009 in Rockhampton with a seven month old steer of Michele & Barry Fleming from Serpentine WA, which took out the National Beef Competition Champion Carcase Award. Fertility: Gelbvieh had the largest testicles of all breeds in the Clay Centre research. Testicular size is shown to be related to fertility of daughters. Early puberty is thought be linked to fertility. Milking Ability: Gelbvieh were originally bred for milk production as well as beef, as is still the case in some closed herds in Germany. They have sound, compact udders with smallish well placed teats. The
exceptional milking ability of Gelbvieh compliments the growth trait of the breed and results in a young sappy calf that reaches weaning age at a suitable marketing weight. When used in a crossbreeding program the addition of the influence of hybrid vigour adds further to the profitability. Weaning Weight: Gelbvieh produced the highest weaning weight per cow exposed to breeding at Clay Centre, which reflects their good performance in fertility, milk and growth. Weaning weights of the progeny can regularly be around 60% of the cows body weight. Yearling weights are more than adequate for joining replacement heifers to calve as two-year-olds and the early puberty and high fertility of the breed results in high conception rates. Heat Tolerance and Tick Resistance: The South African Gelbvieh Association has reported a distinct tolerance to both heat and ticks. Gelbvieh bulls stand in the sun quite contentedly while most British and European breeds seek the shade. Gelbvieh have a short coat and smooth skin which aids in heat tolerance and tick control. Anecdotal evidence from Queensland supports these comments. T The Balancer Breed: Gelbvieh cattle crossed with Angus (red & black) produce ‘balancer’. Balancers utilise the advantages of hybrid vigour to produce high growth and well muscled progeny with added fat cover and easy calving traits. Balancers can be either red or black and are equally suited to grass or feedlot finishing. Gelbvieh X are sought after by feedlot operators where they can be short fed for local trade or grown out to heavier weights.

HEREFORD Hereford Cow
HEREFORD Efficient, productive and profitable; the breed that is the key to any balanced beef production system. Hereford cattle, distinguished by a white face and a red/brown body, were first developed in Herefordshire in the United Kingdom and have since spread throughout the world with strong populations in south and north America, New Zealand, South Africa, Europe and Australia where it is the nation’s second most numerous breed in the temperate zone. Herefords consistently out perform their British breed counterparts across a range of traits, providing long-term viability and sustainability for modern day beef operations. EFFICIENCY The Hereford breed is the ideal choice for commercial cattle breeders looking to reduce their production costs and increase their financial income. As Australia’s most feed efficient British breed, Hereford cattle have the genetic potential to improve your herd’s feed intake and utilisation to reshape your profitability and sustainability.
PROFITABILITY Hereford cattle lead the profit race for $-per-head profit. Consistently Hereford and Hereford cross cattle sell for top dollar at saleyards throughout Australia. DOCILITY The temperament, or docility, of the Hereford breed will impact positively on your herd’s growth rates, fertility, carcase, meat quality, stress levels and manageability. Cattle with slow flight times, i.e. good temperament: • grow faster to final weights • have heavier carcases • have better feed conversion ratios. FERTILITY The Hereford breed’s high fertility rates enable producers to maintain and even increase herd numbers throughout any seasonal condition. Females are reliable breeders, producing and weaning a calf annually, not just in the good years. CONTINUED ON PAGE 68

EFFICIENCY – ECONOMIC BEEF PRODUCTION Feeding cattle is the single, largest variable expense in commercial beef production. Profitability depends on costs and revenue. Hereford cattle can decrease feed requirements and improve feed utilisation to reshape profitability and sustainability for farmers. WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR THE PRODUCER? Whiteface Cattle Consume Less Feed – Their daily feed intake is 1.2kg/day less than Angus cattle. Whiteface Cattle Maintain Growth & Gain – They consume 6% less feed for the same gain as Angus cattle. CROSSBREEDING Don’t just take our word for it; this is what Bos indicus cross breeders have to say about using Hereford genetics. “I use the Hereford in a criss-cross breeding program with Santa Gertrudis as the calves are sought after in the fattening market. The criss-cross produces a type of beast that can be turned off at any stage in life, whether that is bullocks, the EU market or local trade. The crossbred breeders milk a lot better than the purebred of either breed.’’ Ray was able to value add to his surplus females through the vealer and store markets. POLL HEREFORD VERSATILITY If you’re after a breed of cattle that provides a level of versatility that helps create enviable productivity and profitability, look no further than the Poll Hereford. The Poll Hereford originated from the United States of America, after breeders saw numerous benefits in producing a hornless breed, so much so the ‘hornless’ Herefords were selected and bred. The motivation was initiated by the desire to develop a

Hereford with exceptional beef-producing characteristics, with the added appealing trait of being naturally hornless, and so the Poll Hereford was born. After the breed was introduced to Australia in 1920, Poll Herefords spread rapidly in Queensland and quickly made its way down to the southern states. The first breed association was formed in 1922, and the Australian Poll Hereford Society was established in 1933. CONTINUED ON PAGE 74

MAINE-ANJOU
MAINE-ANJOU ENORMOUS BENEFITS FOR AUSTRALIAN CATTLE BREEDERS
Manie-Anjou Cow and Calf
Founded in 1839, the Maine-Anjou is a French breed of domestic cattle that has a strong combination of characteristics that make it a highly sought-after commodity in Australia’s cattle market. Its origins are from the cross breeding of the French Mancelle and the Durham in 1908, all in an attempt to improve beef production. In that same year the success of the breed was assured so the Breeders formed a Society and named the breed Maine-Anjou. The name was derived from the region where the breed was started, which was where the Mayenne and Loire rivers meet in the Anjou Valley in France. Since 1908, the Maine-Anjou breed had made its way to Canada, United States, New Zealand and finally to Australia in 1973. Because of its adaptability to Australia’s harsh weather conditions it can now be found in all States and Territories of our vast country.
Maine-Anjou has made a significant mark on the country’s beef industry achieving records....
Since its inception into Australia, Maine-Anjou has made a significant mark on the country’s beef industry achieving records in carcase evaluation tests, steer competitions, Ausmeat Beef Trials and the like. Consisting of an appealing skin colour, the contribution of maternal and growth traits, as well as a desirable level of docility, there is no doubting the enormous benefits the Maine-Anjou has to offer Australian cattle breeders. Added to that, their well-muscled frames coupled with a minimum layer of evenly distributed fat makes them a popular choice amongst butchers for their high yield as well as gourmets for their tenderness and flavour. The average weight of Maine-Anjou cattle is 1400kg for males and PAGE 76

800kg for females, with all those exported from France undergoing a genetic screening (karotyped), garnering a reputation as being one of the most genetically sound of tested breeds in the process. Having also been the one of the first cattle association’s to implement compulsory performance recording for milk and growth rates in cattle, the French Maine-Anjou Society’s practices has been nothing short of pioneering. These records are closely linked with an animal classification system, whereby animals are scored out of 100 points against the ideal standard. These standards are under the supervision of the French government and continue today. Because of a shortage of purebred Maine-Anjou cattle in Australia, the demand for both pure and part breed are forever growing.
Maine-Anjou Cows
THE BENEFITS OF A MAINE-ANJOU: 1. Does not alter base herd colour 2. Efficiently increase weight gain 3. Excellent milking ability 4. Increase the salvage price of surplus stock 5. Early maturing
6. Adaptable to climatic conditions 7. Produce a quality carcass, with an even and desirable fat cover, that suits the modern day consumer These results combine to make the Maine-Anjou a very enticing prospect for cattle breeders all over the nation.

MINIATURE HEREFORD
MINIATURE HEREFORD
Miniature Hereford Cows and Kids
PERFECT FIT FOR FAMILY Today, miniature Herefords are full blood Herefords and are registered through Herefords Australia. Miniature Herefords a perfect fit for peri-urban and family markets. Herefords are experiencing a mini boom among periurban landholders, young cattle enthusiasts and the baby boomer generation. 2017 marks the 20th anniversary since the first live shipment and frozen genetics of Miniature Herefords, with the smaller frame and quiet temperament proving popular with those who find the size of conventional cattle daunting. The minis trace their foundation to the US where R. Rust Largent Jr bucked the US fad of breeding cattle awith extreme frame scores, and made the decision in 1970 to continue with the stocky, easy doing small Herefords. His son Roy diversified into miniatures to cater for the rising popularity of small acreage farms . The first true miniature Hereford was born in 1981, LS Real MT 3, with most modern cattle able to trace their lineage back to this bull. World-wide interest quickly grew once the first private treaty sale of miniature Herefords was held in 1989. Today, miniature Herefords are full blood Herefords and are registered through Herefords Australia. They are about 30-50 per cent the size of traditional cattle, with conformation and breed characteristics being the same. The cattle are judged in a similar manner- good bone structure, depth, functionality, soundness and carcase quality- but must be frame score one or less at age three. The primary difference- adult miniature cows cannot be taller than 119cm at the hip and a bull not taller than 124cm. Stud breeders can belong to two national associations, the Australian Miniature Hereford Breeders Network or the Australian Miniature Hereford Cattle Association. Australian Miniature Hereford Breeders Network former president, PAGE 78
Julie Stott said registered cattle number around 300, with most herds ranging from a few head to 20-30. "I see the primary focus of the miniatures being the hobby farmers and those living on small acreages "It has been a bumpy ride with growth in the early years followed by a plateau, and national herd reduction during the drought," Ms Stott said. But, numbers are rebuilding with a growing interest from peri-urban and small lot farmers, especially the baby boomer generation retiring onto acreage. Poll genetics are favoured by the small lot farmers for ease of management "We like to think of the cattle as Herefords with all the qualities of the regular cattle, they are just a miniature version," Mrs Stott said. "Generally, mature cows are around 39 inches (97.5cm). "They are popular with schools as the smaller cattle are easy to break in and handle." Ms Stott, who was among the first to import frozen embryos from the

US in 1997, said stud heifers generally sell for $1500-$2000 and bulls for $2000-$2500. She said a lack of volume had restricted the miniature Herefords from supplying a boutique branded beef product. The majority of cattle are bought and sold on-line with steers either retained as "lawn mowers" or sold into the physical auction market. "I sell my teers at the Carcoar saleyards where they receive the same cents per kilogram as the regular Herefords but are obviously a lighter weight," Ms Stott said . "Other people use mobile butchers to process their steers on-farm. "Weaning weights of steers is around 150kg live." To cater for buyers with little or no background in livestock production, the network provides a comprehensive information pack on cattle and pasture management. Miniature Hereford owners Nathan and Mel Nixon are one out of the box as they have a background in broad acre mixed farming. In the early 2000s, Nathan's family shore up to 9000 Merinos, cropped thousands of hectares and run commercial Herefords in the southern Riverina. Drought changed their landscape and today Nathan and Mel live with their four children on a small acreage at Wagga Wagga, NSW. Both Nathan and Mel had grown up with commercial Hereford herds and wanted their children to experience the same. But, it was a steak dinner at a local pub which set them on the path of miniature cattle. "The steak was massive and I just couldn't eat it all- I got to thinking not only was it a waste of money but also the animal's life," Nathan said.
"I see the primary focus of the miniatures being the hobby farmers and those living on small acreages."

Murray Grey cattle are an Australian breed suited for our conditions
The Greyman breed was the result of combining the outstanding genetic characteristics of both the Murray Grey and Brahman breeds.
Developed in Queensland in the 1970s, specifically to suit the Queensland environment, the Greyman breed was the result of combining the outstanding genetic characteristics of both the Murray Grey and Brahman breeds. Greyman cattle carry between 25%and 75% of Murray Grey blood, with the remainder made up of Brahman. This allows breeders the option of being able to tailor-make genetic blends, selected for optimal performance specific to the region and environmental conditions. More simply, Greymans can be bred with a greater emphasis on Brahman content in the north or in tick country, or with a higher percentage of Murray Grey blood to suit softer, southern pastures. Cross-breeding with Murray Grey cattle has long
been on the horizons of many a cattle producer due to the advantages of heterosis or hybrid vigour, whereby the progeny of the cross-bred parents offer superiority in performance. Murray Greys are used Australia-wide in crossbreeding programs over European, Bos Indicus and other British breeds of cattle. Murray Grey cattle worldwide are increasingly chosen to be used in cross-breeding programs because they reduce calving problems, have improved temperament, widen the range of marketing options, are adaptable, increase yield and improve meat quality and milk ability.

GREYMAN BEEF CATTLE
Murray Grey Bulls
ORIGIN – FAST FACTS • The Murray Grey breed was developed in the upper Murray River region of Australia in the early part of this century. • The first grey cattle resulted from the mating of an Angus bull and a roan Shorthorn cow. It was found that two or three crosses of the greys produced a very high percentage of grey cattle, combining features of the Beef Shorthorn and Angus breeds. • Commercial cattlemen became interested in the breed’s rapid growth and high carcase yield, and several developed grey herds.

LIMOUSIN
BENEFITS OF LIMOUSIN
THERE ARE an abundance of benefits that come with Limousin cattle, so much so they are considered to have a multitude of economically relevant traits all in the one package. Their versatility of production means they are highly sought-after commodity in the industry. The Limousin is traditionally a rich gold colour, with lighter circles around the eye and muzzle as well as a lighter colour shade on the legs. They consist of a short neck, a small head and a broad forehead, and are of

intermediate size and maturity. With the ability to adapt to a variety of climates and the widest range of management systems, they can be found in Australia as far north as the top end of the Northern Territory, to as far south as the highlands of Central Tasmania. Due to their low birth weights, they generally experience minimal calving issues when Limousin bulls are used over cows of other breeds.

Limousin Breeder’s Society. The ALBS also have values they uphold when making decisions and conducting business practices. These values are: •Professionalism. • Respect. • Integrity. • Customer focus. • Communication and Innovation. • Continuous improvement. Key strategies for the prolonged prosperity of Limousin cattle encompass breed development, and increase in demand nationally as well as New Zealand, expanding international markets, membership and youth development. The Limousin breed continues to uphold its phenomenal reputation and the Australian Limousin Breeder’s Society hope to capitalise on that stature within in the industry to ensure its prolonged prosperity.
LIMOUSIN
Another selling point of the Limousin is their high dressing percentage, with Limousin cross-bred steers and heifers having dressing percentages of 58-63% in comparison to the average of 53-58%. They obtain a high yield with figures of up to 80% of saleable meat not uncommon. This yield is courtesy to Limousin cross carcases which have high bone to meat ratios and low fat. Limousin is very tender, healthy beef as it is a meat that is finely textured, low in saturated fat and cholesterol. Being excellent foragers that include walking long distances for food, as well as above average feed conversion rates, the Limousin is a very efficient breed of cattle. The Limousin solidifies its characteristics on other breeds of cattle when used in crossbreeding programs, in particular its superior carcase characteristics. The Australian Limousin Breeder’s Society has an ambitious five year plan, however it is one that is plausible due to the quality of the cattle coupled with the society’s proactive initiative. The ALBS’s five year vision: • Be recognised across the beef supply chain sector with a recognised branded beef product. •Be the European brand of choice to commercial breeders for crossbreeding. •Have a majority of the membership performance recording their herds. •Have increasing membership numbers. •To develop and promote the Limousin breed of cattle and by doing so, enhance the long term profitability of the members of the Australian

PURE BRED BEEF Compact beef cattle with a big future AUSTRALIAN Lowline Cattle are bred pure from Aberdeen Angus genetics originating from Scotland and Canada, developed in Australia to suit sustainable and lifestyle properties.
Only the Australian Lowline Cattle Association (ALCA) has registered cattle that are DNA-typed and parent-verified to prove the cattle are true Australian Lowlines. • Lowline cattle are versatile – ideal for commercial farming, schools, students, families and lifestyle farmers • Lowline Cattle have compact frames, approximately 60 percent of the size of larger breeds, with excellent feed efficiency • Improve viability – you can run more animals per hectare and thus make more profit per hectare • More effective and efficient use of smaller farms • Environmentally friendly – Lowline Cattle have a low impact on paddocks and fences • Lowlines are naturally polled, have great temperaments and are easy to manage • Low birth-weight calves for easy calving in heifers and cows of any breed • Early maturing – steers have the ability to finish on grass from 14-months old. Grow your own beef • Beef is an important source of protein, vitamins, minerals and amino acids, especially iron, B12, niacin and zinc • Growing your own beef is a cost-effective way to feed your family a healthy diet • Lowline Steers are ideal for smaller acreage farms and are easier to manage, lower maintenance than other breeds and are feed efficient • Lowline beef is well-marbled, tender and flavoursome with a beautiful texture • Lowlines have moderate-framed carcases – perfect for the freezer Certified Lowline Beef is an opportunity for ALCA members to establish a farm business to sell their beef. • Using a Lowline bull in your cross-breeding program • Dynamic hybrid vigour • Moderate herd frame-size for feed efficiency while maintaining muscle and enhancing beef quality • Predictability and quality – calves are uniform in size and grow quickly (genetic dependability) • Lowline cross steers and heifers will finish on grass and are quicker than other breeds in a grain-fed operation • Steers have minimal wastage and less bone – more kilos of beef per acre means more profit • Higher intramuscular fat results in flavour, tenderness and finetextured beef benefits of Australian Lowline Cattle PAGE 84

GRAND FUTURE AHEAD Lowline bulls are here to stay at Coonong Station, New South Wales COONONG Station, a large NSW Riverina sheep and beef farming operation of 27,000 hectares between Urana and Jerilderie, purchased their first Lowline bulls in 2007. They had calving troubles with their Hereford heifers and had tried using bulls from other breeds over the years but were still pulling calves or losing heifers calving. It was suggested by another beef producer that they try using Lowline bulls so they purchased three two-year-old bulls from Elandra Park and Wanamara studs. Coonong Station is vast so the bulls work in large paddocks and sometimes harsh conditions. It goes to show that structurally good bulls will have a long

working life and the Lowline bulls are proving their longevity. Sophie Holt, Coonong Station, maintains the use of Lowline bulls for a heifer’s first calf is a sensible option. By getting 100 per cent of live calves and having 100 per cent to wean is the best outcome for any producer. Sophie said she likes that all the calves are consistent of type no matter what bulls are used. They are quick growing, black baldy calves that are weaned at six months old, around 200kg, and sold as grass-finished yearlings , preferably over the hooks, fetching good prices. Last season, Sophie said they had joined the Lowline bulls with some of their older Hereford cows and all the cows were in calf.

RED ANGUS
RED ANGUS REAL ADVANTAGES
Red Angus cattle have all the attributes of Angus with the addition of the homozygous red coat colour. Red Angus cattle excel for temperament, maternal qualities and carcase characteristics. Red Angus and their crosses are keenly sought after commercial producers as a cornerstone for their production system. Red Angus has the ability to adapt to a vast range of the climatic conditions to be encountered across Australia. HOMOZYGOUS RED COLOUR Red Angus when crossed with other red breeds will produce red-coated calves. This has an advantage when selling through saleyards of evenness in the line of sale cattle. The red coat colour reflects the sunlight better than darker breeds and makes the Red Angus a better option for tropical based systems. Red Angus cattle have advantages over Angus in buffalo fly areas where the buffalo fly is attracted more to black hided cattle. The lighter Red colour also assists in handling heat conditions better than black hided cattle.
FERTILITY & MATERNAL Red Angus females reach puberty at a young age, are highly fertile and are renowned for their longevity in the herd. Red Angus females have excellent milk production and have a strong maternal instinct. Combined with easy calving attributes Red Angus females are keenly sought after. TEMPERAMENT Red Angus cattle are considered by breeders to be gentle natured and easy cattle to work. Worldwide reports support the docile nature of the Red Angus breed. Australian research conducted by CSIRO Livestock Industries (CLI) and the Co-operative Research Centre for Beef and Cattle Quality (Beef CRC) at Rockhampton have found a positive relationship between 'good' cattle temperament, improved productivity levels and overall meat quality whereas cattle with poorer temperaments have comparatively lower average daily weight gains and reduced carcase weights. "Poor temperament lowers cattle profitability through increased production costs - for example, mustering, maintaining cattle handling facilities and the increased risk of injury to the cattle and their handlers," CARCASE QUALITY High quality beef production is synonymous with the Angus breed worldwide. Whether from pasture or feedlot Red Angus beef is highly desired for meat quality. Red Angus like all Angus lay down intra muscular marbling, which assists in the eating quality of the meat. Red Angus has the ability to be targeted at a range of market specifications. From the light domestic production through to heavy export specifications Red Angus can be incorporated into your programme to suit your environmental constraints.

MASTERS OF THE ENVIRONMENT In northern areas that require added heat tolerance, Red Angus cattle work well on Bos Indicus and their derivative cattle breeds. The progeny resulting are heat tolerant, and highly regarded for their maternal abilities; their steer mates should express improved marbling genetics. High levels of heterosis may be seen when Red Angus are used on cattle of such divergent origins. Using Red Angus allows breeders to take advantage of the complimentary traits existing between Angus and Brahman cattle as well as the heterosis that
is expressed in a Bos taurus x Bos indicus cross. Leading Australian Pastoral Companies are using Red Angus in their developing composite herds. NAPCO are using Red Angus genetics in their Kynuna Composite to access growth and marbling.

Red Angus and ABC Composite breeder Andrew Hicks describes his Red Angus as a great breed. He summarises the breed as “a red breed suited for the Australian heat, which is low maintenance, polled with low birth weights, high weight gains, and has top carcase attributes.” Red Angus Bull

ROMAGNOLA
ROMAGNOLA MEETS MARKET
Unsurpassed for growth rate and muscularity by any other European breed TRIAL work at the Beef Quality Cooperative Research Centre in southern NSW has shown that a wide range of genotypes will produce carcasses of acceptable eating quality for the domestic market. The steers evaluated were the progeny of Hereford cows mated to a range of European, British and Wagyu sires. For this market, where age is a primary consideration, growth rate and carcass yield will be the most important traits that determine profitability for the producer. This was borne out in the C.R.C trials, where, with saleable beef valued at $10 per kg, the steers by European sires produced carcasses valued up to $140 above the other breed types. The trials are valuable because with new technologies for beef production continually being developed, it is sometimes difficult for cattlemen to keep everything in perspective and to get our priorities right. We need to be able to identify and focus on those factors that have a real impact on the efficiency of our production system. The selection of bulls for their propensity to marble and the development of DNA tests for the presence of genes that contribute
to tenderness, are both means by which the eating quality of beef may be improved. However before we adopt new technologies such as these, we must consider two things: Firstly the critical level of expression for each characteristic. That is, the level beyond which there is no financial reward for further improvement. Secondly, the negative correlation that can exist between traits, such as between some adaptive and production traits or between growth rate and marbling. The Romagnola breed holds a unique position in the industry in relation to both of these considerations: It inherits the adaptive traits and strong constitution of its Bos Indicus ancestors and, at the same time, is unsurpassed for growth rate and muscularity by any other European breed. In addition, Italian breeders and researchers have focused strongly on improving the eating quality of the end product to satisfy their discerning customers. At present most of our markets do not pay a premium for quality criteria such as tenderness and marbling. Under these circumstances high growth rate and high yield are the
THE CROSS ROMANGUS The progeny of a combination of a registered Romagnola bull or cow with an identified Angus animal can be identified as Romangus. BRAHMAGNOLA The Brahmagnola has been developed due to strong demand for an animal which exhibits the muscularity, fertility and constitution of the Romagnola with the adaptation of the Brahman. most important production traits. However, interest in the eating quality of beef is increasing and more markets are incorporating quality criteria in their specifications, such as in the MSA system. The Romagnola is one breed that can be used to meet these changing conditions without the need to trade off performance for quality. Mated to British bred cows, Romagnola bulls not only generate maximum growth and higher yielding carcasses but have already proven to do so without any adverse effect on marbling. "Australian beef producers are recognising the Romagnola for it’s ability to adapt and thrive in all environments, with superior fertility and maternal function and to produce beef with excellent eating quality characteristics." Romagnola cattle are found in all states of Australia, they are primarily used in cross breeding programs to produce superior animals for all modern beef markets.

SANTA GERTRUDIS Santa Gertrudis Bull
SANTA GERTRUDIS THE SANTA GERTRUDIS BULL
Necessity brought about the creation and development of this breed of beef cattle THE Santa Gertrudis bull is renowned as one of the industry’s most efficient beef producers. You will notice immediate improvements with the first calf crop. The calves will have no trouble at birth with smaller birth weights than most of the recently imported breeds and yet they are renowned for their rapid growth. The use of a Santa Gertrudis bull will introduce heat tolerance, tick resistance and most importantly, when crossed with British breeds, an immediate drop in the number of losses due to eye cancer and pink eye. In recent years breeders of Santa cattle in Australia’s more temperate climates have consistently recorded significant reduction in losses caused by bloat.
from bloat - a problem which causes untold losses every year in some of Australia’s southern states. Mature Santa Gertrudis bulls weigh in excess of 900 kg, with 1000 kg or more not uncommon. The average scrotal circumference is frequently in excess of 40cm. Weight gain is one of the most highly heritable performance traits in beef cattle - daily weight gains of Santa Gertrudis bulls is regularly monitored at more than 1.5kg per day. Santa bulls have outstanding foraging ability which means they can thrive even under the harshest conditions and they are noted as very active and athletic sires. An inherent trait of Bos Indicus is their unlaboured gait which enables them to easily cope with long distances to food or water, unlike some European and British breeds.

SANTA GERTRUDIS
THE SANTA GERTRUDIS COW Renowned for their natural nursing ability and excellent maternal instinct
THE Santa Gertrudis female has become a highly sought after commodity in the Australian beef industry with regular sales of females from central and northern Queensland to cattlemen in southern regions of New South Wales and Victoria. Few beef cattle breeds can boast regular sales of females into these areas and the reasons are clear. The Santa Gertrudis cow is one of the most efficient producers in the industry. The mature Santa cow can weigh up to 750kg, she has excellent milking ability with high butterfat content, few calving problems and in competitive tests has produced consistently larger calf crops than other breeds. One of the major attractions of Santa Gertrudis female is their longevity. Producers regularly record details of 14-15 yearold cows still producing a calf each year without fail. One breeder had a foundation second cross female which had produced its 18th calf at 21 years-of-age. Because of this outstanding ability, producers are not forced to continually use replacement heifers; this translates to better gross margins, and more money in your pocket. The large mature size of the Santa female also provides excellent salvage value. Their natural mothering instinct is

BEEFING UP AUSTRALIA There are plenty of reasons to choose the exceptional Santa Gertrudis IT WAS desirable in the eyes of those at the King Ranch, Texas, USA where the breed was developed, that other cattlemen should enjoy the benefits of increased production, even in harsh conditions that could be obtained by these cattle. Since arriving in Australia Santa Gertrudis have gone on to become one of the leading breeds of beef cattle excelling in the areas of cross-breeding, weight for age, food conversion efficiency and daily weight gain. There are plenty of reasons why you should choose to breed Santa Gertrudis cattle. Santa cattle adapt easily and quickly to a wide range of climatic conditions and can be seen flourishing across most of Australia. This breed is known for being exceptionally good foragers; due to their excellent walking ability they can travel long distances for food and water. With exceptional longevity, bulls have been known to work until 14-15 years of age and regularly females of 13-15 years or more have been recorded as producers of top calves.

SENEPOL Senepol Show Cow
SENEPOL
WHY SENEPOL?
Cross with Senepol… and don’t look back Heat Tolerance: A pure Bos Taurus breed with superior heat tolerance (USDA Subtropical Research Station, Brooksville, Florida) Dr Tim Olsen’s long term research findings established that Senepol cows maintained a cooler rectal temperature than Brahman cows whilst grazing during the heat of the day. These studies also found that the F1 Senepol maintained rectal temperatures the same as full blood Senepol thereby indicating the ability to pass on the factor in crossbreeding. Disease and Insect Resistance: Senepol have a greater immune response compared to other beef breeds. This fact has been largely attributed to the N’Dama influence. N’Dama cattle are highly resistant to the Tsetse fly, a carrier of the disease Bovine Trypanosomiasis (Sleeping sickness). This trait is of importance in Australia where Buffalo fly is prevalent. Slick coat gene: An identified gene (Sk-Dr Tim Olsen) confers a very short haired sleek coat when an animal carries a copy of the gene. To date Senepol is the only breed available in Australia that is known to be a carrier of the gene. The gene is associated with the heat tolerance of the Senepol breed. Smooth coated animals in tick infested country will carry less tick burden than hairy coated animals. The natural licking (grooming) process, as well as the animal’s inherent tick resistance, greatly reduces tick larvae from maturing. The Senepol and its slick haired crosses, from field counts conducted in Queensland, appears to have a very high level of genetic tick resistance. PAGE 94

Australia is a country of extreme seasonal variation. Shorthorn cattle are extremely Feed Efficient, allowing them to retain high fertility levels and high production records, even under tough seasonal conditions. For cross breeding herds, Shorthorns genetics balance out all the traits of economic importance, however, Shorthorns are also one of the most complimentary breeds in the world, having formed the basis of over 40 breeds worldwide. With an ideal temperament and increased longevity, Shorthorn females are in demand. For purebred herds they retain your

capital value for longer than other breeds, for crossbred herds they allow you to capture both maternal heterosis and genetic gain with one of the worlds most complimentary breeds. “BECAUSE THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT” Shorthorn breeders understand that they are one link in the Beef Supply Chain. More than understand it, they respect it.Quality or quantity, always the big question for any production system. So why target just one category? Shorthorn cattle have excellent marbling traits, and combine these with high yield percentages. They are also extremely efficient converters of feed. What does this mean for you? Shorthorn cattle deliver high compliance rates and extremely consistent performance across a variety of market specifications, whilst requiring less feed to achieve it. That means happier customers and more margin for you. This is why Shorthorns are in high demand today.Whether you are targeting early turnoff or premium markets and whether your system demands grain-fed or grass-fed performance, Shorthorn cattle deliver a better bottom line.

Shorthorns allow you to do that! Best of all, the Shorthorn production model is safe, without the higher risks that usually come with higher returns. As costs keep rising, the business model of today is always under pressure from the demands of tomorrow. When you add Shorthorns to your current production system, you have the ability to increase fertility and production, retain maternal heterosis and genetic gain, increase feed efficiency, increase compliance rates, maintain market versatility, improve temperament and longevity and create a cow herd you can be proud of whilst producing a product that is in demand.
Are you trading profits for popularity? Let’s face it, costs keep rising but prices don’t. You can’t pay tomorrow’s bills with today’s production. You need change, your system must return more, without increasing your risk. And it must generate sustainable, multi trait performance, and do it simply. That’s the kind of result you get when you add Shorthorns. Because Shorthorn cattle are bred to solve problems, not create them. Any they are in demand. Shorthorns can complement your existing program like no other because they improve all the traits that increase your profit, not just a few. We know your program works today, but when you are breeding cattle that must work tomorrow, count on Shorthorns to increase your bottom line.

“YOU CAN’T AFFORD NOT TO!” It is a tough job to stand out in today’s marketplace. We are constantly told to increase production, increase compliance, decrease risk and differentiate ourselves from other producers.
Adding Shorthorn won’t diminish the capital value or performance of your cow herd and you begin to enjoy the benefits of differentiating yourself in the market place. Ask anyone who is currently using Shorthorn genetics in their program why they do it and they will tell you. “They can’t afford not to!” Shorthorn Bulls

SIMMENTAL WHY USE SIMMENTAL Simmental a breed designed for profit.
Market reports Australia wide highlight the acceptability of Simmental genetics in the industry. Genetic improvement offers graziers the opportunity of increasing productivity and profitability of their herd. Cattle breeders have little control over enterprise inputs such as parasite control, drenches and selling commissions: how ever the quality of the genetics introduced into their herd is completely their option. The introduction of Simmental into a herd will improve fertility, growth, weight for age, heat and parasite tolerance, and ability to walk and forage, milk, marbling and tenderness qualities. ability of turning them off at a much younger age. We believe that the high butter fat content and milking ability of the Simmental is the secret to weight for age. From our experience and from speaking to other breeders, they are very tough and resilient when it comes to dealing with the day to day harsh Australian conditions. The Simmental steer or heifer are very much in demand with feed lotters & crop fatteners more often than not topping the markets week after week, this speaks volumes for the breed and tells you that they outperform many other breeds. You only have to look back to 2017 with the top Australian Simmental bull selling for $160,000 surely this speaks volumes for the breed.
HEALTHY, HARDY BREED Originating in the Simmen valley in Switzerland, the Simmental breed has been Europe’s dominant dual purpose beef/milk breed. It made its way into the Australian market 46 years ago, with its primary purpose being beef production. The breed has garnered so much interest in recent decades globally that it has established itself as the second largest breed in the world, with more than 41 million animals across every continent on the planet. They are a healthy, hardy breed allowing for a highly efficient production. The Simmental breed is one that gives breeders ingress to the benefits of hybrid vigour to boost their productivity and profitability. The Australian Simmental is a versatile breed that is suitable to be used either as a pure bred or in cross breeding programs. They are an adaptable breed that can flourish in a variety of conditions, whether it be in a northern tropical or temperate zone. Examples of the Simmental’s hybrid vigour advantages are as follows: • More saleable weight - 10-15% or 25-60kg. • Trimmer carcasses - less waste fat. • More muscle. • Higher yields of saleable beef. • More productive F1 females.
• Prior turnoff at desired market weight. Much of the Simmental’s rise to becoming one of the most coveted breeds in Australia is due to the exceptional work from stud breeders in the pursuance of performance selection systems and selection for commercially important conformation and structural traits. The Australian Simmental’s characteristics are: Rapid weight gain - First cross Simmental x British or Bos Indicus calves gain weight 20% faster, allowing them to reach market weight younger and earlier, thus reducing annual stocking pressure.

High carcase yield - The highly muscled, leaner Simmental and Simmental cross animal produces greater yields of saleable beef. High fertility - Simmental infused females reach puberty early, so much so they enjoy long reproductive lines. Simmental bulls are known for their sizeable scrotum, high libido and ability to handle a high mating load. When implementing the Simmental Breedplan, bulls can be chosen for fertility and ease of calving EBV’s. Calving ease - EBV data demonstrates a considerable improvement in calving ease, both direct and in daughters, combined with lower birth weights. Excellence maternal qualities
- Simmental females excel in milk and mothering ability, helping with their offspring’s weight. Quiet temperament - Simmental cattle boast an extremely docile temperament that makes them extremely manageable. That become a vital characteristic when it comes to finishing programs and reducing stress is slaughter cattle. Another crucial component of the Simmental breed is its work in crossbreeding programs. Crossbred animals the conist of 25% or more of the Simmental breed are considered “Simbeef”. CONTINUED ON PAGE 102

Productivity gains are a result of crossbreeding with Simmental cattle due to the afro-mentioned hybrid vigour as well as other additive traits. PERFORMANCE OF THE BREED As per the Simmental Australia website: Whilst there have been gains in growth and carcass delivered, birth weight have been maintained to ensure calving ease to clients. Their genetic solution ensures beef producers are getting maximum cents per kilo in all states of growth. Processors love Simmental carcasses due to their superior carcase traits. Modern demands of the beef industry are being met with extra IMF in the carcasses. Significant gain has been made across all markets. Commercial cattle producers can be assured that producers will deliver a superior product to all markets every time. A stud farm that is reaping the benefits of the Simmental breed of cattle is Blue Dog Simmentals, with them describing the Simmental as a breed “designed for profit”.

The cattle were very well suited to the conditions they had to live in....
SOUTH DEVON CATTLE
South Devons are a British breed renowned for their quiet temperament; ability to adapt to a wide range of climatic conditions; high fertility and longevity of breeding life (they can calve at 2 years old and have been recorded as continuing to calve every year till the age of 20). Their maternal ability (both in quantity of milk and quality of maternal care); feed efficiency (feed trials have proved their superiority in feed conversion); excellent weight gain (South Devon steers regularly win the Lardner Park grass fed trials in Gippsland) and quality of meat (2016 Brisbane Ekka – South Devon steers from Bolinda stud won the Highest Individual Carcase Index Score). Recent breeding trends in Australia have modified the size a little, to better suit Australian conditions. Also, the majority of South Devons in Australia would now be polled, and Australian polled genetics have been exported (including to South Africa to introduce polling to their herds). An Australian polled South Devon bull (pictured left) has recently been sold to a Red Waygu breeding operation to introduce polled genetics there.

PAGE 104
In April 2017, 44 South Devon breeders from the UK, New Zealand, and Australia travelled to South Africa for the World Conference and stud tour. We visited several South African South Devon stud and commercial herds in a wide range of climatic conditions; from the high veld with snow in winter, to plains similar to Western Queensland but with a temperature variation from -18 in winter to 45 degrees in summer. The cattle were very well suited to the conditions they had to live in, and the breed characteristics (temperament, adaptability, fertility, feed efficiency, www.chinchillanews.com.au/breedersway

weight gain etc.) were well displayed. We also visited the 140000 head Karan feedlot, a state of the art family owned business and a major local employer. As in Australia, South Devon genetics are used in South African commercial operations to add the traits of temperament, fertility, feed efficiency/weight gain and meat quality. They are an excellent cross with Tropical and European cattle as well as with other British breeds, as can be seen by the Droughtmaster heifer and calf (from South Australia) in the photo. In Port Elizabeth, the touring party were joined by the South African breeders and the World Conference was held, with three South African experts as the keynote speakers. All three speakers were extremely informative and quite inspirational. South Devon breeders in South Africa are small in number but big on ideas, and having celebrated 100 years of South Devon breeding there, I can confidently predict that the breed will be going strong for its 200th Anniversary. SPECKLE PARK
SPECKLE PARK HIGHLY REGARDED The cattle are renowned for being a tough breed and are bred in countries all around the world.
Speckle Park Show Winning Bull
SPECKLE Parks, the beef cattle breed created in Canada, are now an internationally sought after breed. They are a carcass orientated yet maternal pure bred (not a composite), breed of beef cattle. They are Polled and British Bred originating from Canada. Speckle Parks are moderate sized. Mature cows range in weight from 600kgs to 850kgs and mature bulls can get up to 1000kgs plus. Calves average 30 to 40kgs at birth and wean off at about 230kgs to 370kgs plus. Speckle Park cattle come in a variety of colour patterns. They are predominantly black with white top line and underline, with speckled hips and sometimes shoulders and with a black or black roan face. The second colour pattern is the leopard pattern. It is similar to the speckled pattern but there are definite black spots on the animal instead of just speckles. The white animals with some black hair on the body are considered ‘leopards’. The third colour pattern is the ‘white’ pattern.

The white animals have white hair on the body and face but have black points. i.e. eyes, ears, nose, and hooves. The fourth is solid black. There www.chinchillanews.com.au/breedersway
With their fine skin and hair in summer and a quick to ‘slick off’ hair coat, Speckle Parks adapt well to the Canadian summers as well as being able to ‘coat up’ when needed for their notoriously cold winters. They are tough, real tough, you can throw any harsh climatic situation at them and they survive, get back in calf, rear a good one, yet are so easy to feed and come back in condition quickly after hard times. Traits that will stand them in good stead in Australian’s harsh environment.

SPECKLE PARK
HIGH QUALITY CATTLE INTERNATIONALLY SOUGHT Speckle Park cattle are some of the best beef in the business IN Canada, and now increasingly in Australia and New Zealand, butchers and meat graders are very impressed with the consistently high quality of the Speckle Park carcass. It isn't uncommon to get an exceptionally good carcass from any breed, but what is impressive is when the carcass from a particular breed is consistently good. That is the case with the Speckle Park breed. Another impressive fact about the Speckle Park breed is their unique ability of being able to achieve a AAA carcass without excess outer fat cover. Most breeds are able to achieve AAA carcass but often at the expense of excess outer fat. Speckle Park can achieve a AAA carcass with minimal fat cover, thus grading YG1-AAA.
Their docile nature is the the key to more weight gain and less stress on both man and beast. Speckle Parks are docile animals and their gentle disposition makes them a pleasure to work with. They are however tribal and prefer to be in the company of other cattle. The breed comes in three colours and in black. Black animals must have the word [black] after its name. All black animals must have DNA verification before they can be registered. Rarely, there are some animals born with red markings. These cannot be registered. Animals with horns also cannot be registered.

TEXAS LONGHORN Texas Longhorn Close Up
TEXAS LONGHORN WHY TEXAS LONGHORNS
There are many benefits to breeding Texas Longhorn cattle. True Calving ease with low birth weights Texas Longhorns and calving ease go hand in hand. In recent studies, Longhorns had the highest unassisted birth rate of all studied breeds (99.7%) and the lowest birth weight. This translates into reduced calving stress on the first calf heifer, impressive calving percentages, vigorous calves and extra profits for cattle breeders through reduced labour and more live, saleable calves. The trait of easy and uncomplicated calving is of enormous benefit not only to the purebred Texas Longhorn breeder but also to people considering using Longhorns in a crossbreeding program.
Texas Longhorn Cow and Calf
Dairy industry heifers bred to a Texas Longhorn Bull deliver a small calf. With a no stress birth they are in better condition and this allows them to produce more milk.
Texas Longhorn Bull
PAGE 110
www.chinchillanews.com.au/breedersway
TEXAS LONGHORN HIGH FERTILITY AND EXCELLENT MOTHERING ABILITY Texas Longhorns are known for their high fertility and live birth percentages. Most animal scientists agree that high fertility rates are the single most important economic trait in the cattle industry. In the case of Longhorns, the process of natural selection over the past few hundred years assured that only the most fertile bulls and cows would contribute to the gene pool. Modern day Texas Longhorns retain this influence from their recent ancestors. LONGEVITY Longhorns typically live well into their late teens and often into their twenties. Longhorn cows have as much as twice the production capacity of other breeds. In commercial terms, this longer productive life means that breeders can retain fewer heifers to maintain their herd size. Allowing more calves to be marketed each year.
DISEASE & PARASITE RESISTANCE Texas Longhorn cattle have a natural resistance to diseases compared to other cattle, enabling you to use less chemicals and reduce the ongoing costs of running your cattle herd. LEAN BEEF Today’s health-conscious consumer doesn’t have to avoid tender juicy steaks. Not only is Longhorn Beef leaner than that of other breeds, it is also lower in saturated fats. The flavourful Longhorn Beef has less cholesterol and calories than chicken. Definitely good news for a healthy lifestyle. WAGYU Wagyu Cows
WAGYU
WHY BREED WAGYU Tender beef provides an unrivalled dining excellence
WAGYU breeding requires patience as it takes time to build up a viable herd and end markets, this then becomes your own economic moat. The Wagyu breed is gaining strength and popularity as it becomes more apparent to Australian beef producers that there is a real need and demand for high quality carcasses that derive from the marbling prominent in the Japanese genetics. The Wagyu breed’s ability to improve meat quality in cross-breeding programs has been important in improving the capacity of Australia’s exports to Japan to ‘grade’ higher. Australian Wagyu beef is now sold globally with 80-90 per cent of production exported. Some 10-20 per cent is sold domestically, playing a major role in improving the quality of beef for local consumption.

Wagyu strengths include: • Outstanding beef eating quality • High marbling, delivering beef tenderness, juiciness and flavour • Softer fat composition: higher ratio of unsaturated fats – providing a healthier beef product • Finer meat texture • Strong dressing percentage and high retail beef yield • Not excessive back fat • Calving ease • Fertility and virility • Quiet temperament • Versatile adaptation to environments • Early female maturity • Strong foragers • Transport well over long distances • Resilient in the feedlot, including resistance to • Bovine Respiratory Disease • Strong demand from high value markets including • Japan www.chinchillanews.com.au/breedersway
WAGYU Wagyu Cattle
TASTE THE EXPERIENCE Wagyu is unsurpassed for its marbling and ability to improve meat quality in cross-breeding
The Wagyu breed is gaining strength and popularity ...
WAGYU is a Japanese beef cattle breed derived from native Asian cattle. The name ‘Wagyu’ refers to all Japanese beef cattle, where ‘Wa’ means Japanese and ‘gyu’ means cow. Wagyu were originally draft animals used in Japanese agriculture, and were selected for their physical endurance. This selection favoured animals with more intra-muscular fat cells, or ‘marbling’, which provided a readily available source of energy. Wagyu is a naturally horned breed and the cattle are either black or red in colour. Wagyu is a unique breed that has amongst its key attributes, other than the exquisite marbled beef quality, a high calving ease, excellent temperament, resilient in the feedlot and a high carcass yield. Most important is the economic value derived from each animal, which is currently 100 per cent more than pastoral cattle, sold at either the farm gate or as a long fed carcass. The Wagyu breed is gaining strength and popularity as it becomes more apparent to Australian beef producers that there is a real need and demand for high quality carcasses that derive from the marbling prominent in the Japanese genetics. BREEDING CROSSBRED COMMERCIAL WAGYU Crossbreeding Wagyu with other breeds is alternative to fullblood Wagyu breeding. The aim of crossbreeding is to introduce the Wagyu characteristics to enhance the carcass traits and other desirable traits of the Wagyu breed. Although introducing Wagyu into a herd is traditionally done to increase marbling and eating quality of the carcase, several producers in Australia have introduced Wagyu to increase fertility in their herd also.

Has greater than 93% Wagyu genetic content. For example, the result of at least four generations of crossbreeding using a Wagyu fullblood sire and a crossbred Wagyu F3 dam.
NOTES: The above table show crosses are the result of using a Wagyu fullblood 100% bull. If crossbred bulls (less than 100%) are used the resultant offspring will not be the same classification as if a fullblood bull was used. The percentage of Wagyu by content determines the classification in this instance. A purebred is referred to as a crossbred animal with 93+% Wagyu by content. Further crosses are also referred to as purebreds. No amount of crosses can result in a fullblood Wagyu being produced. fullblood animals can only be produced a result of a fullblood Wagyu male (100%) over a fullblood Wagyu female (100%).

RESILIENCE IS KEY TO HYBRIDS Hybrid vigour is evident when two unrelated genotypes meet. The amount of hybrid vigour is proportional to the un-relatedness of the genetics. Hybrid vigour is pronounced with more indicus content. From a pure commercial perspective, increases of +10% in fertility and growth rate is a significant source of value creation, and this simple premise underpins our investment thesis of sourcing Bos IMAGE ABOVE: Bonsmara Bulll Taurus genetics, to appeal to the northern Bos Indicus commercially adequate. Belmont Reds and Senepol are much more docile than the Brahman-derived breeds and under extensive management are easy minded operator. There are three sources of Bos Taurus genetics; British (no tropical to handle. It is this very good temperament that we also believe leads adaptation); European (no tropical adaptation); and African or African to better meat tenderness. Emphasis on both breeds has been placed derived (Tropical adaption). The African or African derived genetics are on objective selection for these mentioned heritable and economically the focus of our investment thesis, with particular emphasis on Senepol important traits. Our next focus is to continue to expand the hybrid options with and Belmont Red. Tropically adapted Bos Taurus, such as Senepol and Belmont Red, deliver African and African derived Bos Taurus genetics. These typically have superior production advantages to Northern Australian cattle producers. a mix of Senepol, Bonsmara and Belmont and have been successfully Their better meat tenderness, provides additional distribution options implemented in Western Australia, Northern Territory, the Gulf and Northern Queensland. Being tropically adapted and 100% Bos Taurus, such as restaurant markets, in addition to the wet market. Equally important is the environment that we source our genetics from. they are able to increase fertility in Bos Indicus herds, meat quality, as We expect our animals to perform on grass, adaption to heat, ticks, flies well as MSA grading and also dramatically inject the poll gene into horn and lantana, with minimal chemical treatments. This adaption, aligned herds across many sub-tropical markets. with strong genomic markers, ensures the animal is adapted to the More calves, more hybrid vigour, more growth, more pregnancies less temperament, means more compliance and ultimately more profit. harsh conditions of our buyers markets in northern Australia. We have been incredibly impressed by both breeds and have observed We are both confident and excited by the recent investments made in strong weight gain and good fertility. They are heat-tolerant, and while composite genetics, and we look forward to seeing further commercial tick resistance is lower than that of the pure Bos indicus, it is still benefits to our major northern Australian producers.
